  2. Gently massage the oil into the affected areas.

The OG of medicinal oils, castor bean seeds have been around for 4,000 years and were used by the Aztecs and ancient Egyptians to treat skin and gut issues.

It’s taken some time for modern science to catch up with that wisdom, but research supports its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Great qualities, since psoriasis flare-ups are particularly susceptible to infection.

As with any other product you apply to your skin, you should test a small amount to make sure you’re not allergic. Check with your doctor first and avoid using it if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, as it may induce labor.

How to use it:

Castor oil topical treatment

  1. Pick up some pure, organic, cold-pressed castor oil. Read the label to be sure the product isn’t sourced from seeds treated with pesticides, as that can lead to skin irritation.
  2. Using an organic cotton ball (cotton is often treated with pesticides, too!), rub the oil directly onto the psoriasis patches. If that’s a little too oily for you, you can mix it into coconut or olive oil.
  3. The best time to apply castor oil is in the evening, since it doesn’t absorb like lotion and needs time to sit on the surface of the skin.

Black seed oil, also known as black cumin oil, was thought to be so beneficial in ancient times that King Tut was buried with some, and it even got a shout-out in the Bible.

The seeds and oil from this flowering plant found in Southwest Asia have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pain-relieving properties.

Black seed oil is also very moisturizing and can help reduce psoriasis scale thickness. Research is ongoing to determine whether or not black seed oil is beneficial for treating cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, and more.

Don’t try it if you have low blood pressure, diabetes, a bleeding disorder (it slows clotting), or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How to use it

  1. Apply black seed oil directly to your skin, or dilute it in coconut oil.
  2. Massage gently on the affected areas of your skin.
  3. Black seed oil can also be massaged directly onto your hair or scalp for an intensive moisturizing treatment.

The cold-pressed oil from argan fruit contains vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

It also contains a substance called squalene, which helps rehydrate skin, prevent skin damage, reduce inflammation, and stimulate wound healing.

In its pure state, argan oil can be eaten or used topically. But while it may be okay to put culinary oil on your skin, it’s not a great idea to eat something that’s marketed as a cosmetic (the safety standards are not the same).

Argan oil is pretty safe for everyone and mild enough to be applied directly onto the skin undiluted. There’s always the chance you could be allergic though, so perform a patch test it before adding other ingredients.

How to use it

  3. Wrap your hair in a shower cap.

Some other complementary treatment options to discuss with your doctor include:

  • Fish oil supplements: People with psoriasis have a higher risk of developing heart disease, so adding some omega-3s to your diet is a heart-healthy idea. The recommended daily intake of omega-3s for women is 1.1 g, and for men it’s 1.6 g.
  • Vitamin D3 supplements: A routine blood test can determine if you have low levels of vitamin D. Significant associations between low levels of vitamin D and psoriasis have been observed.
  • Probiotics: People with psoriasis have less gut bacteria diversity than those without the condition. Growing evidence suggests that an imbalance in gut bacteria may cause inflammatory disorders like psoriasis and IBD. Balancing your gut bacteria can better support your immune system and reduce inflammation in your body.

What about diet?

The National Psoriasis Foundation’s medical board regularly publishes dietary recommendations for people with psoriasis. Some dietary recommendations include consuming:

  • Probiotic-rich food. Such as fermented foods and kefir.
  • High-fiber foods. To feed the good bacteria in your gut that support your immune system.
  • Foods high in antioxidants. Like nuts, colorful fruits, and vegetables, which help protect your skin cells and heart.
  • Meat, carrots, and squash. These are packed with vitamin A to aid cell growth.
  • Fish, flax, and soy. These have omega-3s to protect the heart and brain.
  • Anti-inflammatory spices. Like turmeric and ginger
  • Antimicrobial foods. Like garlic and oregano.

Also, avoid eating foods that might trigger an immune response, such as wheat products or processed foods.

Relax, and your psoriasis might too

Stress can cause psoriasis to flare up, so finding ways to unwind will be most beneficial. Try meditation or acupuncture, which has helped some, or take a relaxing bath with Epsom salt or colloidal oatmeal.

These and other acts of self-care can both soothe existing symptoms and prevent them from worsening.

The Coconut Oil Debate and Psoriasis

“Coconut oil is pure poison.”

Is that so?

In August, Harvard University professor Karin Michels, delivering a lecture to college students in Germany, declared that coconut oil is one of the worst foods you can eat due to its high saturated fat content. (And what about whole milk and red meat, professor?) The talk, captured on video and shared on YouTube, quickly went viral; it’s since been removed from the video sharing site.

Health nuts decried her statements as inflammatory and misguided. India, “the land of the coconut tree,” asked for a retraction. And I began to eye my tubs of white death — stowed in my bathrooms for topical application and in my kitchen for cooking — with suspicion.

Why I Use Coconut Oil

I have psoriatic arthritis with mild plaque psoriasis and, since my experimentation with coconut oil, only gotten milder, sometimes completely disappearing if the circumstances (good dietary choices, lots of vitamin D, and exercise) are right. Even if I stray from the path of healthy lifestyle interventions, coconut oil softens my spots and reduces itching and redness.

After a tub or shower, I slather on coconut oil with abandon. I buy it at a local discount store — if you ever visit Rhode Island, stop by Ocean State Job Lot for the coconut oil and stay for aisles upon aisles of quirky finds — for less than $5 per tub. And I buy the best quality stuff: cold-pressed, pure extra virgin organic coconut oil. Refined coconut oil, while odorless and tasteless, is treated with heat and sent through a bleaching clay, which can kill off beneficial proteins and minerals.

I was inspired to try extra virgin coconut oil after perusing a message board with moisture-locking alternatives to petroleum jelly, another swear-by solution for people with psoriasis. My mom is a big proponent of the petroleum jelly and plastic wrap method, however I found the process to be cumbersome and inefficient, since my lesions are small and sporadically distributed. I learned that coconut oil was easy to apply; it melted in my hands and I could slick it on without any sticky residue. I also became accustomed to smelling like a pina colada – a feat for a person who, before psoriasis, avoided coconuts at all costs. Now, I love it everywhere: on my skin, in my hair, sautéed with vegetables, in my granola, and in soups.

Research on Coconut Oil’s Benefits

After officially declaring myself a coconut convert — I’ve got a badge and everything — I had to figure out why it works for me. And others. While I did not find published research papers on coconut oil and psoriasis, I did discover one study that looked at the anti inflammatory and skin barrier repair qualities of various common oils.

Since psoriasis is an inflammatory disease, I figured this was a good place to start. The paper, published in January of 2018 in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, compared coconut oil with the several other plant oils. Only coconut oil had positive skin barrier, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and wound healing effects across the board. Coconut oil’s oft-compared kitchen cousin, olive oil, also clocked many benefits but skin barrier repair is not one of them.

In light of the so-called toxicity concern of ingesting coconut oil, I also sought research on its health implications. A randomized trial comparing coconut oil, olive oil and butter found that, although coconut oil and butter are both saturated fats, coconut oil — like the monosaturated olive oil — did not raise the bad cholesterol, LDL-C, while butter did. Different fats, different fatty acids, it seems.

And, finally, the study of my coconut oil dreams: Researcher Dr. Jose Scher, out of New York University, is seeking to test the benefits of oral coconut oil for people with psoriatic disease. Scher, a leader in the field of autoimmune disease and microbe research, is conducting a clinical trial to assess whether oral pure extra virgin coconut oil, delivered to participants via a 1,000 milligram supplement four times a day, improves disease activity and T-regulatory cell counts for people with psoriasis who are not currently taking other medications. Both the psoriasis group and the healthy control group will take the coconut oil supplement for six weeks, then a non-coconut supplement for three additional weeks.

In an email interview with HealthCentral, New York University researcher Luz Alvarado tells me the proof-of-principal study is bolstered by preliminary data on oral coconut oil’s effectiveness with animal models of psoriasis as well as some prior data on a small number of healthy subjects.

The trial is expected to wrap up in 2020, but I won’t be waiting for the results. I’ll run through a dozen more tubs of coconut oil, both in the bath and the kitchen. I won’t be eating it by the spoonful, to be sure, but a turmeric coconut curry with sautéed vegetables sounds pretty tasty right about now.

Psoriasis is a skin condition and autoimmune disease, which typically manifests through the appearance of red or pink scaly patches on the skin. Most commonly, this will affect the elbows, forearms, back, knees and scalp, although it can also present in many other locations of the body. The patches will often be itchy and sometimes painful too.

There are five main types of psoriasis, but plaque psoriasis accounts for around 90 percent of all cases. With plaque psoriasis, the patches on the skin often have a white or silver centre and this will typically have a scaly texture.

People with psoriasis experience it in different ways and although the severity of the condition and the location of the patches can vary significantly, most sufferers seek treatment methods that can minimise its symptoms and keep the condition under control, with these treatments ranging from medication to natural remedies.

Psoriasis Causes and Treatments

Psoriasis occurs when the epidermal layer of the skin grows too rapidly. Essentially, this results in skin cells being replaced too frequently and cells then build up, resulting in dry skin patches, which flake. The precise reason why this occurs is not yet known, but it is thought to be linked to a problem with the body’s immune system.

The underlying causes of psoriasis are also not fully understood, but it is generally accepted that there is a strong genetic component. Meanwhile, lifestyle factors can also contribute to the condition developing or worsening, with examples including stress, changes in climate and excessive alcohol consumption.

Although there is no known cure for the condition, there are a number of treatment options available. The purpose behind treatment is to control the condition, limit the severity of its symptoms, reduce inflammation, itchiness and soreness, and correct immune response.

Treatment can also greatly improve self esteem and mood. Topical treatments are generally utilised for mild forms of the disease, while light therapy may be used if the condition does not respond. In the most severe cases, oral or injectable treatments may be used. In all cases, treatment can also be supported with some natural remedies, which can help to improve psoriasis symptoms.

Coconut Oil and Psoriasis

When it comes to natural remedies that can help to manage psoriasis symptoms, coconut oil is one of the best known and most readily available. As the name suggests, coconut oil is an oil extracted from the fruit of a coconut. It is edible, although has high saturated fat content, but can also be applied topically to the skin.

Utilised in this way, coconut oil serves to hold in moisture, stop the growth of some bacteria and reduce redness and swelling of the skin. It is, therefore, an effective natural remedy for dry skin, scaling and itching, all of which are associated with psoriasis as a condition. Moreover, it can be used to help loosen psoriasis scales.

In addition, coconut oil is often used in personal grooming, especially on the hair and nails. For those with scalp psoriasis, it is an easy transition to use the product as a natural treatment. Indeed, the coconut oil can help to remove some of the flakes and restore moisture to the scalp, while simultaneously improving the hair.

With that said, while coconut oil is a useful natural remedy for psoriasis symptoms and can have a role to play in treating or managing the condition, it should be used in conjunction with other topical treatments and home remedies, rather than as a single solution. Coconut oil should not be used in place of prescribed treatments.

Other Natural Remedies for Psoriasis  

While coconut oil is one of the best known and most effective natural remedies for psoriasis sufferers, there are a number of other options which are worthy of consideration as well. The first of these is light exposure, although time spent in the sun should be managed carefully to avoid damage caused by UV rays.

Olive Oil for Psoriasis

Olive oil, applied topically, can help to increase skin moisture, reduce inflammation and soften dead skin, making it easier to remove. Similarly, apple cider vinegar and aloe vera both have a useful role in treating psoriasis, helping to soothe the skin and reduce itching. Apple cider vinegar should be diluted and should not be left on the skin for too long, due to its acidity, which can lead to side effects like irritation and the formation of more dry skin.

Salts for Psoriasis

Both epsom salts and dead sea salts can be added to bathwater in order to create salt water soaks. Although the primary use of salts in this context is to provide relief from some of the more problematic symptoms, such as itching, soreness, irritation and inflammation, they can also help to simplify scale removal.

Finally, research has suggested that diet can also have a role to play in treating psoriasis. In particular, multiple studies have highlighted potential benefits from taking fish oil supplements that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Moreover, limited research has established a link between coeliac disease, itchy skin and psoriasis and some studies have suggested that the severity of symptoms can be reduced by limiting gluten intake.

Psoriasis is a common autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to grow faster than normal.


Psoriasis develops when the immune system stops working normally and instructs the body to grow skin cells faster than usual. This means that the skin cells grow in a matter of days instead of weeks. The body does not shed the skin cells as it normally would. Instead, the cells start to build up on the skin, which causes the plaques to develop.


Psoriasis is a chronic condition that is normally passed on through families, but it is not contagious.


Psoriasis usually affects the skin, but some people have psoriatic arthritis. Symptoms for this include swollen joints and pitted, discolored nails.


A person with psoriatic arthritis may also experience stiffness. Although this stiffness is usually less severe than osteoarthritis, it can be very painful. People with psoriasis have a 30 percent chance of developing psoriatic arthritis.


There is no cure for psoriasis, but there are treatments available to control the symptoms.


What is coconut oil?


According to Harvard University, coconut oil is gaining popularity both as a topical treatment and as a cooking oil. The flavor makes it suitable as an ingredient for baked goods and other dishes. It is used, for example, in Thai food.


Coconut oil is composed of 90 percent saturated fat. This is a much higher fat content than butter, lard, or beef fat, but coconut oil helps to increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, or “good” cholesterol. However, coconut oil can also increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, or “bad” cholesterol.


Topical coconut oil can also be used as a beauty treatment in a number of ways. These include:


Reducing hair frizziness


Reducing stretch marks


Moisturizing the skin


Removing makeup


When applied to the skin, coconut oil can reduce skin inflammation. It can also help to relieve skin dryness because it reduces the amount of water lost from the skin.


Fatty acids also have skin-soothing benefits for treating psoriasis. Coconut oil might help to soften the skin because it contains the fatty acids lauric, capric, and caprylic acids.


Lauric acid also has antimicrobial activity, which helps to reduce the risk of skin infections and irritation.


Coconut oil as a treatment for psoriasis


When a person has psoriasis, the itchy and scaly plaques can be very dry.

Coconut oil may be used in cooking and as a beauty treatment.


When using topical medications, some people may find their skin becomes even drier. As a result, doctors will often recommend that individuals apply moisturizers with an ointment-like base to reduce dryness, according to the Mayo Clinic.


Coconut oil is an example of a moisturizing treatment for the skin, and applying it can help to reduce very dry skin, particularly in the winter. Coconut oil is available at most health food stores, either as a single oil or incorporated into lotions and ointments.


If a person has scalp plaques, the National Psoriasis Foundation recommend massaging the oil into the scalp. This can help to remove the plaques, as well as soften the scalp.


The Foundation also recommend adding coconut oil to a bath to soothe the skin as an alternative to traditional oatmeal baths.


The bath water should not be very hot. It is important to pat the skin dry and not rub it. A person with psoriasis can apply coconut oil to the skin immediately after taking a bath. Applying it two to three times a day gives the best results.


Mixing coconut oil with aloe vera can give it additional skin-softening properties.


Despite this anecdotal evidence, there is limited research on the effectiveness of coconut oil as a specific treatment for psoriasis.


The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database point out that there is insufficient evidence to prove that coconut oil is effective in treating psoriasis.


Researchers have studied the application of the treatment before using ultraviolet light therapy, but the results were inconclusive.


Considerations for coconut oil


When applied topically, coconut oil is not associated with many adverse side effects, but it is rarely a sole treatment for psoriasis. It is normally used as a moisturizing therapy, alongside other treatments.


It is possible that a person could have an allergic reaction to coconut oil. An allergic reaction would cause additional redness, itching, and warmth at the affected skin site.


It is also possible that coconut oil may not work to reduce the symptoms of psoriasis. In this instance, a person may need to try other topical, moisturizing treatments to relieve the symptoms.


Other health benefits of coconut oilLight therapy


Light therapy may be used to treat psoriasis. This treatment can include natural sunlight and artificial light.


The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rate coconut oil as “possibly effective” for the treatment of eczema, another skin condition that causes a dry, itchy rash.


It has been suggested, but not proven, that coconut oil can be used to treat a number of other health conditions. These include:


Chest pain


Chronic fatigue


Diabetes


Diarrhea


High cholesterol


Irritable bowel syndrome


Thyroid conditions


However, there is not enough evidence to prove that coconut oil is effective in treating any of these conditions.


Other psoriasis treatments


The course of treatment a doctor recommends depends upon the type and severity of the disease. Treatments for psoriasis can include topical ointments, oral medications, and light therapy.


Light therapy


Light therapy involves exposing the skin to the sun or artificial ultraviolet lights. Exposure to light can cause the T cells in the skin that cause excess growth of skin cells to die. This slows the spread of psoriasis as well as inflammation from the condition.


Oral medications


A variety of oral medications are available on prescription. Examples include methotrexate, cyclosporine, or immune-modulating medications like infliximab (Remicade) or adalimumab (Humira).


Topical treatments


Topical skin treatments may be combined with light therapy, oral medications, or both. Examples include topical corticosteroids, retinoids, or calcineurin inhibitors like tacrolimus (Progra) or pimecrolimus (Elidel).


A person with psoriasis may also use salicylic acid, coal tar, and moisturizers to reduce the itching effects of dryness and scaling.


Psoriasis can also be affected by external events and conditions. Examples include:


Taking medications that result in inflammation


Infections


Stress


Weather changes that cause the skin to dry


Alternative treatments for psoriasis can also include the following:


Aloe vera cream or ointment


Fish oil: The Mayo Clinic recommend taking up to 3 grams a day to potentially reduce inflammation associated with psoriasis


Oregon grape or barberry ointments


It is important to talk to a doctor before beginning any alternative treatments for psoriasis, to ensure that these treatments will not interfere with any prescription creams.

The surprising benefits of coconut oil in skin therapy

From the earliest recorded histories, botanical oils have been used as topical treatments for the skin.1 The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera), a member of the palm family, is largely cultivated for its nutritional, cosmetic, and medicinal values, while its oil, derived from the coconut fruit, has long been recognized to be beneficial to the skin.2 Indeed, many cultures have ancient traditions utilizing it for medicinal preparations.3

While the number of high-quality clinical studies on topically applied coconut oil is low, some compelling evidence is available. Notably, there seems to be renewed interest in coconut and other natural oils, with topics as far-flung as using coconut oil as a sunscreen (spoiler: it didn’t work very well!).4

Many studies specifically use virgin coconut oil (VCO). VCO is generally defined as coconut oil being obtained through mechanical or natural means, which do not lead to alteration of the oil, and where the oil has not undergone chemical refining, bleaching or deodorizing. This is in contrast to methods that use undesirable solvents such as hexane to extract the oil.5

Promising properties

Coconut oil is relatively high in medium-chain fatty acids, making it somewhat unique and granting it properties that may be useful in the treatment of a number of conditions including obesity, dyslipidemia, diabetes and hypertension.2

More relevant to the skin, however, it has been shown to be a capable moisturizer. A randomized double-blind study pitted virgin coconut oil against mineral oil in 34 patients with mild-to-moderate xerosis. In the perhaps surprising conclusion, coconut oil was found to be equal to (with a trend toward being superior to) mineral oil as an emollient, resulting in significant skin hydration and increased surface lipid levels, with equal safety.6

Supporting these data, and similar to the findings with sunflower seed oil, VCO has been shown to improve barrier function in low-birth-weight babies.7, 8 There is a strong suggestion that by strengthening the skin barrier in these at-risk infants, morbidity and mortality due to sepsis can be reduced.

Coconut oil has also been shown to possess another important property relevant to dermatology: It can decrease staphylococcal colonization on the skin. In a randomized controlled trial, coconut oil was found to clear an impressive 95% of staphyoloccal colonization in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD).9 This is extremely provocative in a time when we are all increasingly concerned about the role of bacteria in AD10, and simultaneously worried about increasing bacterial resistance.11 A safe and inexpensive agent for decolonizing the skin could be of tremendous clinical benefit and this line must continue to be researched.

The barrier repair and antibacterial properties of coconut oil seem to pan out when put to a more clinical test. In a randomized trial of 117 patients with AD, mean SCORAD decreased by 68.23% in the VCO group compared to only 38.13% in the mineral oil group (P < 0.001) at 8 weeks.12 There is no doubt that further studies are warranted in AD to best determine a role for coconut oil.

The cons with coconut

Like many other botanicals, however, coconut oil is not without some downsides. Specifically, there are a number of coconut-derived compounds present in cosmetics, some of which are not infrequent causes of allergic contact dermatitis. Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is a widely used surfactant that debuted in 1976 as the “No More Tears” ingredient in children’s shampoos [Jacob 2008].  However, it has the dubious distinction of being the North American Contact Dermatitis Group’s allergen of the year for 2004, and is thought to have a contact sensitization prevalence is estimated at between 3.0 and 7.2%.13

Counseling for patients with known allergy to CAPB can be challenging because the cross-reactivity of CAPB with other coconut-derived surfactants and coconut oil itself is largely unknown. One randomized study of 12 patients with known CAPB allergy and 10 control patients examined 11 coconut-derived surfactants, as well as coconut oil cross-reactivity. Remarkably, not a single patient in the study reacted to coconut oil, and only three of the 12 patients with previous reactions to CAPB reacted on retesting. All of these reactions were doubtful. This study suggested that reactions to CAPB may represent irritant dermatitis as opposed to true allergic reactions, and that the risk of reacting to coconut oil itself is likely very low.14

Coconut oil has already proven itself useful and important in dermatology with a long history of use dating back to ancient times, to widespread use as a raw material for cosmetic derivatives.
