The pores in our skin are connected to oil glands. When a child is going through their teenage years, they hit puberty and during this time, the body produces a hormone called testosterone. While primarily a male hormone, it is also produced in females to some extent. Excess production of the hormone causes the oil glands to enlarge and overproduce oil (or sebum).
