A combination of orange, papaya and banana blended together to make a filling drink that beats cholesterol! This unusual combination of fruits is rich in potassium, vitamin C and fibre. Lower Your Cholesterol with Smoothie Breakfast Bowls

Recipes & Nutrition,

Smoothie Breakfast Bowls-A Bowl a Day Will Help to Lower Your Cholesterol
Richard E. Collins, MD
THE COOKING CARDIOLOGIST®
Tired of drinking your breakfast in a glass? Then chow down to a breakfast bowl that has texture, fiber and spoonfuls of goodness. The bowl concept creates greater variations to a traditional smoothie. A variety of toppings can be created each day.
The difference in the breakfast bowl verses a smoothie is the “pudding-like” consistency. As a result, thickeners are added such as a banana, yogurt, flax and/or chia seeds.
This breakfast bowl also adds another food ingredient:
Step One food products are a line of recently developed food items that contain plant sterols, a perfect addition to your breakfast bowls. Each Step One product contains approximately 1,000 mg of plant sterols. These are naturally occurring and lower your cholesterol absorption in the gut. Consumption of 2,000 to 3,000 mg per day will drop cholesterol levels by 15-17%. Plus each serving adds fiber, omega-3 fats (approximately 2,000 mg) and anti-oxidants.

Tropical Mango Coconut Oatmeal Smoothie Bowl
In this bowl, the oatmeal is a blend of oats, blueberries and cinnamon plus those heart healthy extras in the package. With the fresh fruit, it is a spectacular dish. Most smoothies are made from frozen fruit, but I preferred chilled ingredients to nearly room temperature especially with the warm oatmeal. If preferred, the oatmeal can be chilled, but be sure to add more liquid.
For the smoothie bowl:
¼ cup chopped chilled fresh mangos
¼ cup chopped chilled fresh pineapple
½ small banana
¼ cup Greek styled coconut yogurt, such as Chobani, 2%
2T So Delicious coconut creamer
For the oatmeal:
Prepare according to package instructions of Step One Foods oatmeal. Add ½ cup boiling water with 2T So Delicious Coconut Creamer. Let soak for three minutes.
For the topping:
2T fresh blueberries
1T shredded or shaved coconut, sweetened or unsweetened according to taste
Additional mango slices if desired

In a blender or small food processor, blend all fruit and the banana. Add the yogurt and So Delicious. Blend until smooth. Divide the bowl in half with the mango smoothie on one side and the oatmeal on the other. Run a line of fresh blueberries down the center with rows of coconut and mango.

Mocha Coffee Banana Breakfast Bowl
Do you dislike making breakfast: first the coffee, then the cereal followed by a high protein fruit smoothie? Then have your coffee without brewing it and your protein with a delicious sprinkling of oat bran, chia seeds, flax, cranberries, walnuts, banana and raisins, all in the same bowl. Bring on the stress of the day as your tank will be full of goodness.

For the bowl:
½ cup Orgain Organic Creamy Chocolate Shake with 16g of protein, available at Sprouts
¾ of a banana, sliced, reserve the other ¼ of banana for topping
½ cup vanilla Greek styled yogurt, fat free
For the topping:
1 package Step One Foods sprinkles
5-6 dark chocolate espresso beans, crushed
¼ of the sliced banana reserved from the smoothie recipe
1T shredded or shaved coconut sweetened or unsweetened according to preference
Extra chopped almonds or walnuts if desired
Prepare the smoothie in a blender or food processor. For a thicker consistency, add more yogurt. Pour into the breakfast bowl. Add the toppings, first the sprinkles, then the espresso beans, remaining sliced banana, coconut and extra nuts if desired.
Serves 1. Serving size: One bowl. Nutritional analysis does not include toppings except for the Step One sprinkles.

How To Lower Cholesterol Using Smoothies?

Heart disease, stroke and periphery artery disease are the major deadly diseases associated with high cholesterol level in our body. It is estimated that one third of Americans has high cholesterol level (more than 240 mg/dl – miligram per deciliter of blood) and not even half of them are even aware and taking necessary steps to treat it. These people with high cholesterol level are twice as much riskier to get heart disease.

Can we really use smoothies to lower cholesterol level and reduce our risk of getting these diseases? Yes sure we can! To make it clear, I’m referring to green smoothie ONLY, with no added dairy, protein powder, and other stuffs. Green smoothie contains fruits and vegetables that have lots of nutrients that do wonders to help lower cholesterol level. But first, I’m going to tell a bit about cholesterol, how so much of it can be dangerous and it’s impact to our health. I feel it’s important to understand about cholesterol first and foremost. But if you are short of time, feel free to skip this part and head down to the last section on how can fruit and vegetable smoothie reduce cholesterol with examples of the types of fruits and vegetables to be used.

What Is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy fat substance found in our body that is needed for producing hormone, vitamin D and others. It is produced in our body from liver and can also be consumed from food. Since it can’t be dissolved in blood, it needs to bond with carriers, called lipoprotein. There are two types of lipoprotein: 1) Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL).

HDL And LDL

You probably have heard how LDL is the bad guy here and that can’t be futher from the truth. While LDL and HDL is absolutely important for our health (cholesterol is needed to produce hormones after all), a high level of LDL is dangerous as it cause build up of cholesterol plaque in our blood artery (blood vessel). This plaque build up is the root cause of heart disease and stroke. HDL on the other hand, will carry LDL from arteries to liver to be removed from our body.

How can someone have an unhealthy cholesterol/LDL level? Through unhealthy diet full of cholesterol rich foods. Meat, poultry, dairy, baked goods, fried food (especially deep-fried) and processed food are the main culprit of high LDL level. These foods contains saturated fat and trans fat that raise LDL and lower HDL levels. If you noticed, most of these are the main component of our modern diet. It is no wonder that most of the people nowadays have high cholesterol level. Coupled with the lack of physical activity once we reach adulthood, the problem with escalate further.

High Cholesterol And Diseases

Plaque build up (or fancy medical term of atherosclerosis) in our blood artery is the direct effect from high cholesterol level and causes a myriad of health problems. The plaque is made up mostly of cholesterol, fat and calcium. This will narrows the passage of blood vessel. If it is big enough, it can rupture and break open. Blood can clot on that rupture area, causing bigger blockage and disrupt blood flow.

If this condition happen in an artery that is supplying blood to our heart, and the blockage is very big to reduce or blocked blood flow to it, heart attack (angina or myocardial infarction) will occur. The sudden absence of blood supply to our heart will cause pain and discomfort in our chest. If not restored quickly, section of heart muscle will begin to die and can cause death. This is the meaning of heart disease.

Plaque can also build up in other artery. If it happen at carotid artery that supply blood to our brain (located around our neck area), it can cause stroke. Stroke (or brain attack) is the same as heart disease, but the effected organ now is brain. When blood supply to our brain is disrupted, we will feel a very hard and painful throbbing sensation in our head. Left for too long can cause the brain cells to die. If plaque happened at other arteries, such as major artery to our legs, it can cause pain and even gangrene or tissue death if left untreated.  This is the most common occurrence of Peripheral Artery Disease.

Melon and bananas have properties that help us lower bad cholesterol and improve blood circulation, while cinnamon can help lower triglyceride levels.

Melon and banana can be used to make a delicious smoothie that can help lower cholesterol in your body to improve your health and wellness.

Natural fruit cocktails are very suitable when we want to lower cholesterol in the body. All of these foods are rich in carotenes, vitamin C, antioxidants, zinc and fiber, so fruits are undoubtedly ideal for this purpose.

Melon will help us lower cholesterol

Regardless of which melon variety we choose, they are all rich in phyto-nutrients, water and fiber that are ideal for fighting bad cholesterol.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that will help us improve heart health. It takes care of our tissues, makes veins and arteries more flexible and free of plaque, which helps prevent atherosclerosis.

Melon also contains beta-carotene, a natural antioxidant that improves and accelerates cellular metabolism.

Since it also contains magnesium and fiber, melon has a laxative effect that reduces the absorption of fat.

Melon is also rich in potassium, which is essential for heart health. The presence of potassium in our diets can lower blood pressure and better absorb sodium-rich foods.

In our natural smoothie, we blend melon and banana to combine their health benefits. Also, if your body doesn’t digest bananas well, you can combine them with grapes or apples.

If you season your smoothie with a lot of cinnamon, you add another magical ingredient that will help lower your cholesterol.

Why does banana help lower cholesterol?

Some people question whether banana helps to lower or increase cholesterol. In fact, as with most foods, bananas are only healthy if they are present in our diet in reasonable amounts.

A thing as simple as one banana a day will no doubt improve our overall health. Not only is it a fruit that will energize us all day, it is also the perfect ingredient for a delicious smoothie to help lower cholesterol levels.

Bananas are very low in fat and are some of the best fruit sources of fiber.

Fiber is a must-have in our diet to help eliminate toxins and promote good digestion by improving bowel function. Thanks to her, we also regulate the level of LDL or “bad” cholesterol in the blood.

Banana is rich in antioxidants and minerals such as zinc and selenium, which play an important role in the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver and balance its levels in the body.

This data is also important: bananas improve blood circulation and prevent blood clots, which can clog arteries.

How to make this banana and melon cocktail?

Ingredients:

1 banana

1 cup melon (the variety we like) (150g)

1 glass of water (200 ml)

1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder (5 g)

How to cook:

You can make this melon and banana cocktail in just five minutes. You just need to find good ingredients.

It is important that the melons and bananas are not overripe. Otherwise, excess sugar can even cause digestive problems.

Try to choose beautiful ripe fruits. For melons, choose whichever variety you like, preferably seasonal. The more natural the better.

The first thing we do is carve the flesh out of the melon. Remove the seeds and cut it into pieces to make mixing easier.

Peel the banana and do the same.Cut into three pieces.

Now grind the melon and banana in a blender. Whisk for a few seconds and then add a glass of water for a lighter drink.

Once ready, pour it into your favorite cup and sprinkle with cinnamon on top. Remember, this delicious spice is also good for lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Be sure to prepare yourself this delicious smoothie twice a week, especially in summer when melon season begins.Your cholesterol levels will be more balanced and this will undoubtedly improve your quality of life and health.

90,000 7 ways to reach a healthy level

July 22, 2020

Many of us are afraid of even one mention of cholesterol. But is he as scary as we used to think about him? What is cholesterol? What is it for? And is it possible to have healthy blood cholesterol levels? If you do not know the answer to at least one of these questions – our article is for you.

Cholesterol is an important player in the field of our body. He takes an active part in the synthesis of cortisol and testosterone. In addition, cholesterol is an assistant in the production of vitamin D and the maintenance of cell membranes. This substance is simply necessary for all processes in our body to proceed at a normal pace. Problems arise only when too much cholesterol accumulates in the blood. In this case, it can significantly impede blood flow and provoke heart disease.

But that’s not all you need to know about cholesterol. It is divided into two types: LDL and HDL. The first has to do with low density lipoprotein. These are special compounds that carry out the movement of cholesterols in the blood. They dissolve poorly in the body, due to which they tend to accumulate. This is what is called bad cholesterol. The second type of cholesterol, as you might guess, is good. In this case, we are dealing with high density lipoproteins. They dissolve much faster and even remove some of the bad cholesterol from the blood, thereby improving the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

And now the most important question – how to bring cholesterol in the blood to an optimal healthy level? Here are 7 of the easiest tips.

Be careful with saturated and trans fats

This will not only lower blood cholesterol levels, but also strengthen the body in general. Saturated fats are meat, butter, cheese, and lard. It would seem that vegans are insured against them a priori. But not everything is so simple. These fats are also found in palm oil. Of course, you should not exclude it from your diet, but it is still necessary to regulate consumption.

Trans fats is a processed product of the same saturated fats, which is artificially derived. They do not exist in nature. But a sufficient amount is found in fast food, flour and sweet from store shelves. According to research, trans fats can not only increase the level of bad cholesterol in the body, but also reduce the amount of good cholesterol by 20%.

More unsaturated fats in the diet

Even if you already have high blood cholesterol levels, you should not give up fatty foods altogether. As a reminder, foods containing good cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein can help. A diet that includes olive or flaxseed oil, nuts, avocados, chia seeds, flax and hemp seeds is 12% more effective at fighting bad cholesterol than a completely fat-free diet, according to scientists.

More Fiber

Vegans rarely have problems with a lack of fiber in their diets, but still it is impossible not to recall its role in the process of normalizing cholesterol levels. Back in 2007, scientists proved that by consuming as little as three grams of dietary fiber per day for three months, we can reduce our bad cholesterol levels by 18%.Pectin from apples and beets, for example, reduces it by 4%. While dietary fiber flour from psyllium husk – by 6%.

More fresh vegetables and fruits

Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber not only. They contain natural antioxidants that strengthen the heart. As well as vitamins and minerals such as ascorbic acid, vitamin E, selenium and folate. Therefore, people who choose to eat vegetables and fruits raw have lower LDL cholesterol levels. The optimal number of servings of fresh vegetables and fruits per day is at least three.

Less sugar

It would seem, what is the relationship between sugar and cholesterol? However, it is there. A diet that includes fast carbohydrates, such as sugary drinks, soda, cookies, and candy, is generally associated with lower good cholesterol levels and a higher risk of heart disease. Reducing their use will be beneficial not only for blood vessels, but also for general well-being. After all, the less sweet we eat, the more energetic and optimistic we are.

“Yes!” – herbs and spices

Regular consumption of spices such as turmeric, ginger, cinnamon or cardamom lowers the level of bad cholesterol in the blood. You don’t have to be a chef to add spices to your diet. For starters, try simply adding them to your usual smoothie.

Sports, sports and more sports

Especially aerobic and cardio exercises. They help eliminate bad cholesterol from the body, and at the same time make us more attractive and prevent many serious diseases. It takes only 20-30 minutes a day of such loads and two or three strength training sessions a week to get the result.

Avocado – a formidable cholesterol fighter

When you mention avocado, guacamole sauce immediately comes to mind, which is served along with the famous Mexican nachos. Indeed, a tropical fruit is best suited for making various sauces, but this is far from all that it is capable of. It is often used as a healthy appetizer for main courses due to its specific buttery taste and high nutrient content. In today’s article, you will learn about the health benefits of avocado, as well as what to look for when buying one.

Avocado

High fat content without harm to health

Avocado is often mistaken for a vegetable, although in fact it is a fruit, which, like cinnamon, belongs to the laurel family. Almost a third of its fruits are fat, so in ancient times the Peruvian natives dubbed it “the oil of the forest.” You do not have to worry about the calorie content of avocado: it contains only unsaturated fatty acids, which are easily absorbed and have a beneficial effect on the body. They also help lower bad cholesterol levels.

Avocado is rich in vitamins A, B, C and E, as well as minerals, including potassium, calcium and iron. All of the above facts are a compelling reason to include fruit in your daily diet. Believe me, your body will thank you for this!

Avocado varieties

There are many varieties of avocado that differ in taste, firmness and appearance. The most famous are Fuerte and Hass.Below are their main differences.

Hass avocado

  • Small oval fruit
  • Rich nutty aroma
  • Has a dense purple-black rind with an uneven texture

Fuerte avocado

  • Pear-shaped fruit
  • Mild creamy taste
  • Has a smooth green skin

How to determine the ripeness of an avocado?

Anyone who has ever bought an avocado must have wondered how to determine its ripeness. In fact, there is no single answer, because everything primarily depends on the variety. Consider, for example, “fuerte” and “hass”.

If you decide to choose an avocado of the “Hass” variety, then when buying, pay attention to its color: when ripe, it changes from green to black. The ripe fruit should be firm and sag slightly when pressed. If the skin is wrinkled, it is a sign that the fruit is already overripe.

Tip: Don’t buy Hass black avocados because you won’t know how long they last after ripening. The fruit may be overripe.

Unlike Hass, you can easily determine the ripeness of a Fuerte just by looking at it. Black spots on the surface of the fruit indicate that it is spoiled and unsuitable for human consumption.

In addition to these varieties, you can find other varieties of avocados available in Central Europe: bacon, ettinger, pinkerton and reed.

There is a universal method for determining ripeness for little-known varieties. Take an avocado and press on its peel, if the fruit is slightly crumpled, then it can be eaten. It is worth noting that in this case it makes no sense to judge the freshness by color: both unripe and ripe fruits have a green skin.

Storage

If you bought an unripe avocado, store it at room temperature until ripe. Then place it in the refrigerator. At around 5 ° C, it will stay fresh for up to 12 days.

Remove the avocado from the refrigerator one hour before meals. This will make it easier to prepare for cooking.

If you do not want to use the whole fruit right away, leave the pit in the second half of the cut fruit and sprinkle it with a little lemon juice to avoid quick spoilage of the product.Cover the half with cling film and immediately put it back in the refrigerator.
