Tmj for years: The Long-Term Effects of Untreated TMJ

The Long-Term Effects of Untreated TMJ

TMJ disorder is painful, there’s no doubt about that. But what could be even more painful, is TMJ pain that goes untreated.

Maybe you don’t think your TMJ pain is that severe or you have yet to find the help you need. Or perhaps you don’t even realize that TMJ disorder is causing your pain.

Whatever the case may be, you might think it’s easy to keep living with the pain, but you shouldn’t.

Not only does that lessen your quality of life now, but it also puts your future at risk too.

Here are a few of the long-term effects of untreated TMJ:

Chronic Jaw Pain

If you do not seek treatment, your TMJ symptoms may worsen–this includes your jaw pain. Chronic refers to a long-developing symptom or syndrome. When you do not deal with your jaw pain, it can turn from being occasional to being constant for a long-while.

This is because acute or more short-term pain is signaling to your body that something is not right. When that signal is not acknowledged and acted upon (i.e. not treating the pain), it can lead to constant pain signals which leads to chronic pain.

Joint Damage and Inflammation

Think of it like a broken bone. If you don’t put a cast on to properly heal a broken bone, there is going to be more damage to that bone. It’s the same thing with your TMJ. If you don’t seek proper treatment for your TMJ pain, there is going to be damage in the joint(s) that you had issues.

Inflammation is your body’s natural response to heal an injury. So, if your body is not healing pain (such as from TMJ disorder), your body will respond with continued inflammation until it’s healed.

Recurring Headaches

Another symptom that can worsen from untreated TMJ pain is headaches. Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull, and all the muscles surrounding the skull, which is the reason that issues in this joint causes headaches.

If the source of the problem isn’t treated, that’s when recurring symptoms of the pain–such as headaches–will continue to cause you issues.

Development of An Airway Sleep Disorder

TMJ disorder is often caused by misaligned bites, which compromise the quality of your sleep. Because your jaw isn’t sitting in its proper place, it’s infringing on your airway. As a result, less oxygen is getting through to your brain.

All of this, over time, can lead to the development of an airway sleep disorder. This disorder, and consequently, lack of sleep, can also lead to other symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, sleep apnea, and brain fog.

Effects on Life

All of these symptoms place a hindrance on your lifestyle and the way that you live every single day. Untreated TMJ pain not only affects your sleep and the amount of oxygen you breathe at night, but also your mood, eating habits, and even the way you sit and walk.

While TMJ is not a life-threatening disorder, if left untreated, its symptoms can negatively affect your quality of life over time.

Why your TMJ could be Undiagnosed for Years

Known as TMJ disorder or TMD, temporomandibular joint disorder affects more people than you may think—and many who suffer from the disorder may not even know they have it. According to the website of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, estimates suggest that more than 10 million Americans suffer from TMD. Many suffer from TMD and its consequences for decades before receiving an accurate diagnosis. Some people may never have TMJ disorder diagnosed, meaning they live with the ailment and the chronic, debilitating pain it can cause for their entire lives.

If you suffer from TMJ disorder and ignore the problem for too long, standard treatments may not be enough to resolve the matter. Even jaw surgery may be needed to find relief. The best way to treat TMD is to receive diagnosis and treatment from specialists like the ones on staff at TMJ & Sleep Disorders of Michigan. First, let’s look at why a case of TMJ disorder may go undiagnosed for years.

Ignoring symptoms

It is impossible to obtain diagnosis and treatment for an ailment such as TMD until the patient suffering from the disorder realizes they have a problem. This realization may be difficult to achieve, as people may not understand how severe their symptoms are. Also, the symptoms of TMJ disorder can vary widely from patient to patient; as a result, it may be difficult to discover the connection between symptoms. For example, a patient suffering from ringing in the ears may seek medical help but not think to mention any jaw pain or headaches, because they do not see the potential connection.

While people are sure to notice pain, especially if it is at a severe level, other symptoms are easier to ignore—such as hearing a popping or clicking sound in the jaw. Also, symptoms of TMD may come and go when a case of the disorder is in its early stages, thus making people think no problem exists or that whatever was causing the symptoms just went away on its own. Certain symptoms, such as tooth wear, may not be noticed until significant damage has been done.

Misdiagnoses

Many medical professionals, including doctors working as general practitioners and regular dentists, do not have the proper grasp on TMJ disorder and its potential symptoms. For example, many patients who suffer from headaches caused by TMJ are misdiagnosed as having migraines. If you have been living with these chronic and severe headaches, but migraine medications only treat the severity of the headaches but doing nothing to alleviate their frequency, then your headaches actually could be caused by a malfunction of the temporomandibular joint.

For this reason, specialists that have training and education in treating TMJ disorder are the best-qualified medical professionals to provide relief from your chronic pain. At TMJ & Sleep Disorders of Michigan, our doctors have specialized training that focuses on the alignment of the bite and jaw. Our doctors also operate at the forefront of the field and have gone through extensive post-graduate education that goes well beyond dental school to study the importance of jaw and bite alignment. Using state-of-the-art technology in combination with their advanced training, our doctors have the rare combination of skills and tools to identify if a case of TMD exists and then treat the disorder. This treatment also alleviates the symptoms caused by TMJ disorder, including chronic pain.

Soil Renewal Farmers Association

Future Agriculture

is soil renewal.

THE FIRST NO-TILL BOOK IN HUNGARIAN

Not only for beginners…

In March Mikhail Draganchuk’s book “No-Till for Beginners” will be published in Hungarian. It will be useful for those who want to switch to no-till or have been trying for a long time, but have many questions. This is a short, technical document without pictures.

Although Gabe Brown’s Life From Dust is already available here, it is more like a review of regenerative agriculture, the author shares his own experience to provide a theoretical background.

Mikhail Draganchuk, a Ukrainian farmer, brought a completely different tone: at 150 pages it is very short and concise, so we can say with confidence that this is the first professional book on this topic in Hungarian, and even with Hungarian aspects.

It should be out of print by March, thanks to the Soil Restoration Farmers Association, which spearheaded the translation, provided peer review, and funded the entire project.

Who are we?

We are a group of farmers, experts and researchers committed to reviving the agricultural land of the Carpathian Basin.

Knowledge Base

Soil restoration farmers use natural patterns to restore depleted soils. They create a suitable habitat for beneficial soil organisms by forgoing plowing, maintaining a live root system and constantly covering the surface. This diverse ecosystem is the key to healthy and sustainable agricultural soils and the survival of our civilization. ” – Vitalia Vig, soil ecologist

Our goal

The goal of the TMG Association is to adapt the system of soil restoration farming (TMMG) in Hungary and to create conditions for its successful and efficient application.

Why was this site created?

We want to make the work of our professional organization and the knowledge of our members available to a wider audience.

Restorative agriculture is the path of the thinking man. This is not a destination, but a journey of lifelong learning. We believe that for the development of agriculture and the future of mankind, it is necessary to change the way of thinking.

For wider dissemination of knowledge and possible cooperation, we would like to establish contacts with other organizations and companies that are interested in regenerative agriculture and renewal of our soils.

Our economy began to take off around 2010. We started farming without ploughs: this was the norm for us, but at that time we knew little about the principles of regenerative agriculture. Our knowledge has grown gradually over the years, based on experience gained in our own fields and continuous learning. After a lecture by Attila Kökeny, the idea was born that the fastest way to succeed in soil restoration is to share your experience with fellow farmers. After all, the knowledge gained by forty farmers in one year can only be acquired by one farmer in decades. Inspired by the success of our annual meetings, we have decided to become an organization and officially represent regenerative agriculture in the Carpathian Basin.” Attila Sabo, President of the TMG Association

The time of lone wolves is over. Why stumble alone when we can achieve so much more by working together?

For many years, aircraft in the republic have been using outdated runways that operated back in Soviet times. It was possible to change the situation with the implementation of the Healthcare national project – in previous years, a helipad in Saryg-Sepe was overhauled, such facilities were built almost anew in Ak-Dovurak and Erzin. By the end of this year, it is planned to launch two more sites – in the remote Mongun-Taiginsky (Mugur-Aksy village) and Todzhinsky (Toora-Khem village) districts, the Republican Ministry of Health told TuvaMediaGroup news agency.
“In such a unique region as our Tuva, the importance of air ambulance is very high,” said Sholban Saryglar, head doctor of the Republican Center for Emergency Medical Aid and Disaster Medicine. – In the summer, our shepherds migrate to the taiga, quite a lot of settlements are located in hard-to-reach places, in which there is often a need for emergency assistance. Just yesterday, a shepherd was transported, who was attacked by a bear. Of course, this rarely happens, but nevertheless, we are proud that now, if weather conditions allow, we can fly to any point in the region within a day.”
In the six months of this year, air ambulances in Tuva made 111 emergency sorties, while there were 130 in the whole of last year. The increase in the indicator is associated with the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the need to provide emergency medical care to victims of traffic accidents.
Note. Acting Tuva controls the implementation of national projects. On special attention is the project “Development of the system of primary health care” of the national project “Health”, which ensures the availability of medical care using air ambulance.
