“If you go from a fiber intake of 5 to 10 gm to 30, you might feel a little bloated,” Rarback warns. You may temporarily experience some gas or even some unpleasant changes in your bowel movements, but you will become more comfortable as your body adjusts.

Here are some tips for getting adjusted:

  • Stay hydrated. Water helps fiber move smoothly through the digestive system. The more fiber you eat, the more water you need.
  • Avoid gassy foods. Although each person reacts to them differently, certain foods — especially broccoli and beans — are the usual suspects in bloating and gas. For those who are sensitive but not totally intolerant to lactose, increasing dairy product consumption for the protein might also lead to discomfort. In all cases, eliminate the worst offenders for a while and then slowly add them back into your diet one at a time.
  • Include healthy fat in your diet. You may still want a low-fat diet, but very small amounts of healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, are necessary to lubricate your digestive system and support regularity.

Do Plant-Based Diets Produce Better Bowel Movements?

First, it’s important to point out that there is no right way to poop, according to Dr. Robert Glatter, Men’s Health Advisor and emergency physician at Lenox Hill hospital.

“It’s highly variable and people often know their own particular habits,” he previously told Men’s Health.

Dr. James Lee, gastroenterologist at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, California, says it’s totally normal for someone to have three bowel movements a day. Other people may only have three bowel movements a week, which is also fine.

That said, the size, frequency, and even color of your bowel movements can reflect your dietary preferences. For example, people who follow a plant-based diet with plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables tend to pass well-formed poop more frequently, explains Lee.

That’s because fiber adds bulk to stool, which keeps things moving through your intestines.

People who followed a vegetarian diet loaded with fruits and vegetables for 12 weeks reported less constipation, according to a very small study published in the journal Clinical Nutrition Research in 2016.

Alternatively, you may have a different experience if following a high-fat diet like keto, which is typically rich in animal products.

“You’ll experience smaller stool and longer transit time,’ says Lee. In other words, poops may be small, require some straining, and occur less often.

Stool color can also reflect dietary decisions. Seeing green in the toilet may cause you to freak out, but it could be a sign that you’re eating large plenty of leafy green vegetables. It may also indicate you’re consuming too much artificial coloring from candy or processed foods. High-fat diets can produce lighter color stool.

However, Lee believes people get too caught up with stool size and shape. Bowel movements are highly individual and everyone would be better off just trying to eat a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of nutrients, including fiber.

Bottom line?

“There’s no such thing as a superior stool” says Lee.

        Could vegans be the best poopers? Research shows that those following a plant-based diet could have better digestive health and healthier bowel movements.

        Gastroenterologist Dr. James Lee explained the connection between diet and bowel movements in a recent article on Men’s Health. While everyone has slightly different pooping habits, the size, frequency, and color of your bowel movements could be influenced by what you eat.

        According to Lee, those who adhere to a plant-based diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, and fruits typically pass well-formed poop more frequently.

        Plant-based foods are rich in fiber whilst meat and dairy products contain none. Fiber keeps the intestinal system working efficiently, according to Everyday Health.

        “Soluble fiber allows more water to remain in your stool, making waste softer, larger, and thus, easier to pass through your intestines. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to your fecal material, which hastens its passage through your gut and prevents that constipated feeling,” the publication explained.

        Men’s Health nodded to a study published in the journal Clinical Nutrition Research in 2016. The research found that people who followed a plant-forward diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables for 12 weeks were less constipated.

        Vegan food could improve digestive health

        A high-fat diet like keto, which usually features lots of animal products, could worsen your bowel movements. “You’ll experience smaller stool and longer transit time,” Lee said to Men’s Health. “In other words, poops may be small, require some straining, and occur less often,” the publication summarized. Meat-rich keto diets have also been linked to colon cancer, shortened life expectancy, and a phenomenon known as “keto crotch.”

        Lee noted that everyone experiences varying bowel habits. “There’s no such thing as a superior stool,” he said.

        However, Dr. Michael Greger — author of the 2015 book “How Not To Die” and founder of NutritionFacts.org — maintains that unhealthy bowel movements could be dangerous. “[A] lifetime of straining to pass stools that aren’t softened and bulked up by fiber can eventually balloon pockets out through the weakest points in the wall of our colons,” he wrote online. “These bulging outpouchings can get inflamed, infected, and even lead to a life-threatening rupture of our intestines.”

        He pointed to research that found that compared to meat eaters, vegetarians have a 35 percent lower risk of being hospitalized or dying from the condition, called diverticulitis. Vegans lower their risk by 78 percent, according to the study, which lasted for nearly 12 years.

        There’s a whole plant kingdom to sample and experiment with when you switch to a plant-based diet.         What Should Your Vegan Poop Look Like?

        If you knew me personally, you’d see that I’m not one to be afraid to talk about poop. Specifically, having healthy eliminations. Like urine, your poo says a lot about what you’ve been consuming; it’s pretty significant to know how things are processing.

        The word “poop” comes from the Middle English word poupen or popen which originally meant “fart.” The word evolved into “poop” (with its current meaning) around 1900.

        So, what is poop exactly? Water, dead bacteria, indigestible fiber, a mixture of fats, phosphates, live bacteria, dead cells and mucus (from the lining of the intestines), and protein.  So, why does poop smell?  Simply put, the smell of poo comes from what you eat. Those who eat meat enjoy a much stinkier poo, while those who do not have a less pungent smell.  So as you can see, what you put in affects what you put out.

        Everyone Does It, But Vegans Do It Better

        Not surprisingly, vegans have the best poop in the land according to a recent study done by the University of Bristol. I’m going to let Dr. Greger from Nutrition Facts give you the scoop on poop though; he does it with more grace and composition than I’d ever have using the term, “smooth vegan snakes.”

        Did My Teen’s Vegetarian Diet Cause IBS?

        Almost every week, I see a teenager who’s become a vegetarian and suddenly they have lots of gas, bloating, or diarrhea. They’re eating healthier, but feeling worse.

         

        Many teens adopt a plant based diet, for health or ethical reasons. While it can be a healthy lifestyle choice, sometimes it reveals food sensitivities or even Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

        —— Why Does This Happen? ——

        Anytime you make a major change to your diet, it can cause new digestive processes and changes to the microbiome of your digestive system. 

         

        Vegetarian and vegan diets rely heavily on plants and dairy products for protein. Foods like beans and legumes, yogurt and cheese, even broccoli and asparagus. All these foods are high in fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs) that are the leading culprit of IBS symptoms.

         

        —— What Are FODMAPs? —— 

        FODMAPs are types of carbohydrates, certain starches and sugars, that are fermented when we digest them. This causes gas and belching, stomach cramps and bloating, and diarrhea and constipation.

         

        FODMAPs are found in wheat products, many fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and even artificial sweeteners, like High-Fructose Corn Syrup. Foods that are staples of a vegetarian diet.

         

        —— What Can You Do? ——

        The pain of IBS is real and can have potentially serious consequences. Persistent symptoms like gas, bloating, or diarrhea become a daily struggle.

         

        To try to control the symptoms, sometimes teens eliminate foods for their diet that are actually healthy, ending up with a less nutritious diet. Maybe, they even give up on the vegetarian diet or feel that they “just have to live with it.” 

         

        Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be the case. Vegetarian and plant-based diets can be very healthy lifestyles. And for most people once you start eating more plant fibers and plant proteins, your body will adjust with time.

         

        If IBS symptoms persist after some time has passed, it’s possible there is underlying IBS. In that case, I recommend you try a low-FODMAPs diet for two to six weeks. In this trial, you reduce the amount of high-FODMAP foods  to see if the symptoms get better. Then, in some cases, you can add them back and find out which ones are specific triggers for you.

        Why Your Vegan Poop Might Be Green (And What To Do)

        It might feel a bit weird, but looking at your poop occasionally is a good habit.

        It can help you gauge how well your body is working.

        Something that happens to a lot of vegans is that they look down one day and see green poop (stool).

        The good news is that it’s generally not something to be worried about, and is usually just a one or two time occurance.

        If it happens a lot, you should go see a doctor.

        So why does it happen?

        There are generally 2 causes.

        Reason #1 – You’ve Been Eating a Lot of Vegetables With Green Pigment

        The Mayo Clinic actually has an entry for green stool, where they explain the the most common cause is something you ate.

        Something with a lot of green pigment, like spinach or kale, for example.

        In small amounts, they won’t turn your poop green, but if you’ve recently had an exceptionally large amount, that’s likely the cause.

        It may also depend on how you prepare them, as cooking can cause greens like kale to lose nutrients. I’m not exactly sure how that would affect your poop color, but it seems like it could.

        It’s not like it’s bad for you, but you probably want to dial back on the leafy greens a bit.

        SUMMARY

        Having poop that is a greenish color can be caused by simply eating a lot of leafy greens, which is harmless. If the green color persists for days, or you’re not eating an abnormal amount of greens, then you should see a doctor.

        Reason #2 – You’re Not Absorbing Nutrients From Food

        This may be cause for concern.

        Malabsorption is a digestive disorder that could be indicative of a serious problem, and can cause green stool.

        When food passes through your digestive system too quickly, your bile doesn’t break down as it should, which passes the green color on to your stool.

        If this is the case, there’s a good chance that you also suffered from diarrhea (although diarrhea is sometimes experienced by new vegans for other reasons).

        Is this a serious concern?

        That’s the tricky part. Several things can cause this, and some are serious, while others aren’t.

        If you just ate some contaminated or expired food, you’re likely fine, and this won’t be a reoccurring issue.

        However, if you have malabsorption from any other cause, it could cause you to become deficient in other nutrients (vitamins, minerals, essential fats) and cause serious harm.

        Regardless, it’s a good idea to be on the safe side and see a doctor if you feel sick.

        SUMMARY

        If you regularly have green poop, it could be caused by a malabsorption issue that could be a serious health risk. Go see a doctor; they can do stool and blood tests to test for deficiencies or other conditions if they are concerned for any reason.

        Conclusion

        Overall, vegans are at more risk of harmless green poop because we tend to eat a lot of green vegetables.

        This is particularly common among new vegans who haven’t quite figured out what to eat other than a lot of vegetables.

        However, if you feel any sickness, or the green poop carries on for multiple days, it’s a good idea to see a doctor.

        It has been absolutely reliably established that humans, like most of the great apes, are omnivores and are able to eat both plant and animal food. Moreover, it has also been reliably established that cannibalism was inherent in man of ancient times, which to this day now and then makes itself felt in the form of individual disgusting, but quite regular manifestations. Thus, it is clear that there is no real physiological conditionality of feeding exclusively on plant foods.

        Then where did the urge to stop eating animal meat come from?

        To clarify this question, we will have to turn to those primitive times when early man was just beginning his development and cannibalism was not yet something out of the ordinary. The carriers of the visual vector then were skin-visual girls who accompanied men on hunting and warfare, daytime guards of the flock, who simultaneously performed other functions (more on this in the corresponding articles of the website library).It often happened that the skin-visual girl, who missed the predator, herself became its prey, since the flock, forced to flee, abandoned her.         But what does the prohibition mean, with the help of what arguments it is possible to prohibit cannibals from eating their own kind, what makes this prohibition in principle feasible? In addition to the direct order of the leader, who is under the influence of his skin-visual female (for more details about this link, read the article “Promotion of culture to the masses or Antisex and Anti-killing”), in order for the ban to be effective, an adequate replacement for the forbidden is needed.And the meat of other animals was the very alternative that allowed humanity to abandon cannibalism in favor of culture.

        However, under the extreme pressure of the landscape when it comes to survival, cultural superstructures and prohibitions fly off within a few days. Numerous facts of both forced hungry cannibalism, known from the history and memoirs of eyewitnesses of recent events, and everyday life, not associated with the threat of survival and not rare in our days, indicate the insufficient stability of the cultural superstructure itself.It is culture, or rather its development, that is the global universal human task to which the attention of the visual vector should be directed today.

        Nevertheless, some of the vegetarians-spectators do not give up hope to move in the direction of refusing to eat animals for the reason that “you feel sorry for the animals” …

        In this regard, and as a small digression, let us recall the gradual development of the physical world, which began with the emergence of inanimate matter and all kinds of metamorphoses before the appearance of the first vegetation.Using the inanimate level as food, the vegetation gradually developed to the state of food for animals, which appeared after this. Each previous level serves as a forage base for the next. Man is the next level above the animal, for him the “food base” is all the previous ones, that is, minerals, plants and edible animals, birds, fish, etc. Refusing to eat meat, a person, as it were, descends to a level lower, thereby making a rollback. And this is outside the logic of development to complication, which is clearly observed in the nature of our world and is its global tendency.

        If you follow the path “I will not eat animals, because I feel sorry for them,” then after the animal I will have to give up plant food, because “the plants are also alive, I feel sorry for them too.” A person with a visual vector has everything living and animate – “there was a button” … So in the sense of survival and development, the path of depriving oneself of food out of pity for food is a path to nowhere.

        The most advanced modern rational vegetarians, who have rejected sentimental concern for animals, try to reason big and with concern for all of humanity.The stream of analysts about the deplorable state of agriculture in general and animal husbandry in particular, about the irrational use of cultivated areas and cutting down the jungle, about the lack of resources for the growing population of the planet leads them to an unexpected conclusion about the rejection of meat as the only possible way to solve all problems. The conclusion is not at all obvious, despite the fact that all the above-mentioned problems take place to one degree or another and require a decisive rethinking of the entire consumption system by modern society in the direction of a reasonable restriction, but in no way a refusal.

        Indeed, in the cutaneous phase of human development – in the modern consumer society – there was a strong imbalance, a loss of a sense of proportion in the consumption of everything, and this is especially true of food. Mass obesity of adults and children in the most developed countries of the West (in the United States up to 30% of the population) is already a disaster, and not only at the physical level. Hunger has always spurred a person to development, forcing him to move. A well-fed person, being in abundance, does not want not only to move, but even to think – there is no incentive.Therefore, a culture of food intake is needed, but not in the sense of the beauty of table setting (these are visual pleasant trifles) and not through vegetarianism, but in the sense of moderation. As you know, vegetarianism by no means excludes this problem, there, too, we often see examples of overeating. Restriction, a sense of proportion – these are the properties of the skin vector, through which moderation in consumption should spread to all. The visual vector has completely different properties, its task is culture as the value of human life.

        So, in the case of caring for humanity, we can again observe an attempt to adjust external considerations to explain our internal desire to refuse the use of animal products.

        And this desire itself is due to the not very good state of the visual vector, when it is either not very developed and has not come out of the state of fear, or has gone into fear due to the stress of unrealization. Moreover, the deeper the state of fear, the stricter vegetarianism up to veganism.At the same time, the fear of the visual vector does not go away, it remains inside, and the transfer of the fear of a living being to be eaten leads to the impossibility of eating meat or fish as food – this would aggravate an already bad state, up to nausea and vomiting. A person in this way adapts to avoid the worst conditions, but explains to himself and those around him that it is good for health, or that the animal also wants to live, or by taking care of preserving the Earth’s resources …

        As for the vector set typical for vegetarianism, these are, of course, visual people and, first of all, skin-visual girls of any age.Visual fear combined with skin limitation provides all the necessary properties and conditions. Individual skinheads can join the mass of spectators if they are convinced of the great health benefits and benefits for the wallet. Sometimes there will be anal sex guided by their visual girlfriend. Quite often, skin-sound fanatics, in whom the state of fanaticism is primary, fall into vegetarianism and veganism. These can easily do not only without meat, but also without food for forty days, experimenting with waterless dry fasting.

        In general, there are no special problems in the fact that some individual people follow a plant-based diet, if it is more comfortable for them – good health! After all, it’s just the body, and that’s not the point.         The fields of application of the new method, called Intestinal Microbiota Transplantation (IMT), are diverse.American scientists suggest using it to treat severe diarrhea or persistent recurrent diarrhea caused by Clostridium bacteria. By the way, about 15 thousand Americans die from it every year, and fecal transplants are 3-4 times more effective than traditional antibiotics in this case. Teams of researchers from the UK and Switzerland have studied the use of IMT to treat obesity, Parkinson’s disease and other autoimmune diseases.

        The point is that these diseases are associated with changes in the normal intestinal microflora, which cannot be normalized by any drug from the arsenal of modern medicine. But the transplantation of normal donor microflora helps. For example, in Holland, the team that conducted the testing of the method decided to prematurely stop them due to obvious results: of the 16 members of the group who received IMT, 13 fully recovered after the first procedure, and two more after the second. And of the 26 patients who received a traditional antibiotic, only seven (27%) recovered.The rest of the group asked doctors for IMT themselves and recovered after one or two procedures.

        Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared feces a “biologic drug” and warned doctors that they must obtain a work permit to use it. However, doctors complained that the need for complex research would increase the cost of treatment and limit access for critically ill patients. Moreover, it can push patients to self-transplant faeces, which is unsafe.Under such pressure, two months later, the FDA relented and officially allowed doctors to carry out transplants. There is only one condition: patients should be warned that therapy is experimental and potentially risky.

        We are arrogantly accustomed to considering ourselves the crown of nature. Meanwhile, man is a symbiosis (mutually beneficial coexistence) of a macroorganism and billions of various microorganisms. Their share is measured in kilograms – on average, about 4 kg of “guests” live in each of us.These can be very useful microbes that digest food, participate in metabolism, and protect us from the “wrong” aliens. And hostile bacteria can also settle, which weaken the immune system, cause functional disorders, and then serious illnesses. Medicine not so long ago recognized the intestinal microflora community as part of the general human immunity. And the first to draw attention to this was our great physiologist, Nobel Prize laureate Ilya Mechnikov. And he offered a fermented milk product as a prevention of intestinal problems – the famous Mechnikov sour milk.Now yogurt is much more popular in the world, but these are the same lactic acid bacteria, which are probiotics, that is, beneficial microbes.

        Our doctors have always paid attention to the state of the intestinal microflora. The diagnosis “dysbiosis” is hardly the most popular in children with digestive disorders. True, Western colleagues categorically deny that this is an independent disease. But dysbiosis always indicates some kind of problem with the digestive system, they agree with this.The correctness of this view is now confirmed by a new, albeit exotic, method of treatment.

        – There is nothing exotic in it, – Irina Gubonina, Associate Professor of the Department of Gastroenterology of the Military Medical Academy (St. Petersburg), disagrees. – We follow publications on this topic and would like to conduct experiments in this direction ourselves. But we do not have companies that would produce the necessary product – special capsules with donor material. Their production requires special sterility, the doctors themselves cannot provide this.

        However, in Western clinics, not only capsules with donor feces are used, it can also be administered using a probe or a colonoscope, depending on which part of the intestine is affected by the disease.

        “We often attend international scientific conferences,” says Professor Elena Tkachenko, Deputy Director for Science of the Central Research Institute of Gastroenterology (Moscow). – I know that many specialists see a certain sense in the new method. The intestinal microflora is a complex community, with many diseases it is not easy to normalize it.

        But Novosibirsk scientists are interested in a method for treating obesity.

In the process of maturation of such sausages, fermentation of meat occurs – this is a complex biochemical process in which, in particular, lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria are involved.Both of these species normally live in the intestines and are essential for the baby’s digestion and immunity. They appear in the newborn’s gastrointestinal tract during childbirth, and then the required amount supports breastfeeding. Researchers at the Catalan Institute of Food and Agriculture were able to significantly improve the taste of sausages by using these bacteria in 43 babies between 2 and 6 months old.         Answering the question of the benefits or harms of vegetarianism, we can no doubt state that long-term veganism (for several years) is the cause of a sharp deficiency of many components – iron, calcium, B vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, essential amino acids.

        Even in healthy people, with strict veganism, various pathological conditions can develop:

        Violation of the composition of the intestinal bacterial flora – dysbiosis (bloating, diarrhea, constipation, bad breath, nausea, allergic reactions).

        Proponents of vegetarianism may argue that a person can get everything he needs to build his own body proteins from plants.Perhaps this is true for a low level of metabolism and plastic processes in the body, however, with active physiological processes, for example, during growth, physical exertion, the body will be overstrained, trying to get everything it needs from plants only and in sufficient quantities. This is due not only to the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of vegetable protein, but also to its low digestibility by the human body.

        Lacto-vegetarianism and lacto-vegetarianism are more physiological, they can be used as a fasting diet.

        Vegetarian diet

        If, nevertheless, you have decided to switch to a vegetarian diet, then the diet should be as close as possible to the physiological needs of the body in basic nutrients, macro- and microelements.

        The following product set is recommended:

        • Fruit (fresh or dried) – 25%;
        • Raw vegetables (leafy, root, preferably green) in season, separately or in the form of salads – 25%, baked – 25%;

        Following this line of reasoning, most evolutionary biologists conclude that the ability of wombats to produce cubic feces is an adaptation, not a biological “side effect.” True, they did not succeed in explaining a specific skill until physicists joined the work.

        A team led by Patricia Yang of the Georgia Institute of Technology decided to study the hydrodynamics of fluids, including blood, digested food and urine, directly in the bodies of animals.Scientists wanted to know what distinctive features of wombats’ digestive processes and soft tissue structures could explain the strange shape of their feces.

        Experts examined the digestive tracts of animals that died in an accident. Samples for their work were “supplied” by their Australian colleagues.

        The team found that during the final stages of digestion, the wombat feces are modified: from a liquid substance, it turns into a more solid state, after which it separates into small cubes.And the intestinal walls are responsible for the formation of the latter.

        Researchers clarify that the formation of fecal cubes occurs in a small segment of the intestine – it is about 8% of its entire length.

        The cubes form the very walls of the intestine due to the change in pressure. In the course of work, the intestines of wombats either contract or inflate like a long balloon. As a result, the degree of elastic deformation ranges from 20% at the corners of the cube to 75% at its edges.

        Perhaps, to skeptics, such a discovery may seem useless (and even apply for a Shnobel Prize), but in fact it opens up great prospects for engineers.

        The authors emphasize that cubic structures are rare in the wilderness. The material, whether it is compressed sugar granules or a building polymer, obtains this form with special processing.         “We currently have only two methods for producing cubes: we either shape or cut them. We now have a third method,” notes Patricia Yang.
