Dear readers, my name is Didukh Svet lana. I am a member of the Union of Masters of Floristic Painting and Graphics from the beginning of its foundation. Since childhood, I have been fond of various types of creativity, as well as studying history. Today I will introduce you, dear readers, to how you can use such material as veneer in your floristic works.

Veneer is a natural material, which is thin sheets (up to 12 mm) made from natural wood of various species (mahogany, ash, oak). Depending on the production method, veneer is called peeled (made on special peeling machines), sliced ​​or sawn veneer.
Natural veneer is a thin sheet that is removed from solid wood by sawing, peeling, chipping or planing. Natural, such veneer is called because the unique texture of wood is completely preserved during the production process.
At the same time, natural veneer has such qualities as environmental friendliness, sophistication and originality of the pattern.
Turned into thin wood plates – veneer, this material is used for furniture lining and serves to create compositions. Mosaic compositions made of veneer glued to the base are one of the marquetry art trends.
Unlike ordinary works made of natural material, they are assembled into a single image from many details, clearly fitted to each other, like puzzles. In order to work in this technique, certain tools and materials are needed:

– cutter with additional sharp blades (suitable for a surgical scalpel)
– Whatman paper (for a sketch of the work)
– tracing paper (for transferring the drawing)
– pencil, eraser, black gel pen, ruler
– buttons
– PVA glue
– gummed tape (a special tape for working with veneer, which is coated with a non-marking vegetable adhesive), can be replaced with masking tape
– sandpaper of different grits and a special nozzle for a drill for finishing sanding work
– nitro lacquer (for finishing work)

Veneer marquetry is a rather painstaking work. The process of creating a mosaic is as follows:

1. First, the idea of ​​a picture is born, a sketch is prepared, and an outline drawing is applied to the paper. In the technique of marquetry, sketches are the basis of all work. They are guided by when the individual details are ready and add up to the big picture. They are prepared on a 1:1 scale, more precisely, they are a template for the future picture, all the details are laid out and attached to them.

Marquetry patterns can be created by hand or copied from finished works. In this case, they increase to the desired size and are transferred to a sheet of paper.

2. Next, some details of the picture are shaded, the artist determines the lighter and darker ones, in order to then choose a veneer that matches the color.

3. The finished design is transferred onto the base using carbon paper.

4. Separate parts of the composition are cut out of veneer by hand with a knife and folded into a mosaic pattern.
Details must be cut as accurately as possible, otherwise there will be visible gaps in the work.
If necessary, the marquetry technique allows through firing of individual parts in quartz sand, staining and engraving.

5. All parts are inserted into place. On the reverse side of the sheet, they must be carefully fixed with adhesive tape. Large compositions are recommended to be folded in parts.
The resulting mosaic sheet is glued onto the base.

6. The mosaic is pressed against the base. If necessary, you can iron it with an iron, additionally go through the individual parts of the composition with a press.
7. When the glue dries, the adhesive tape is removed.
8. The painting is sanded and varnished.

Veneer goes well with floristry. There are masters who use it in their work. In floral paintings, the veneer will look good as a background. It fits well into the work, creating air, sky, space, water.
