Vitamin C Plus Zinc (Multivitamins and Minerals)

By Julie Lynn MarksMedically Reviewed by Sanjai Sinha, MD

Reviewed:

This product contains the antioxidant ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and the mineral zinc.

It’s used as a dietary supplement to provide vitamins and minerals that your body doesn’t take in through foods alone.

Vitamin C and zinc play important roles in providing adequate nutrition and immune defense.

This supplement may be given to prevent or treat certain deficiencies caused by poor nutrition, different diseases, medications, or pregnancy.

Some people also take it to reduce the severity of symptoms associated with the common cold or to promote overall wellness, though there is no evidence that the average American needs to take these supplements to maintain or improve health.

Vitamin C plus zinc is typically sold as an over-the-counter (OTC) product.

Main symptoms of zinc overdose. Zinc side effects. Can zinc make you sick

Zinc is one of the most important minerals for the human body. This trace element is involved in more than 100 processes. Zinc is necessary for DNA synthesis, normal functioning of taste buds, strengthening of the immune system, wound healing, growth and normalization of reproductive function.

When analyzing a number of studies, scientists have found that the maximum allowable daily intake of this mineral for an adult is 40 mg. Such a volume is not capable of causing any side effects, while its excess can adversely affect the state of health.

The main natural sources of zinc are beef, poultry, fortified cereals, whole grains of certain plants and seafood. Oysters have the highest levels of zinc, containing up to 493 percent of the daily zinc requirement in 85 grams of the product.

Despite the fact that some natural products have a high content of this mineral, several times the maximum allowable intake, cases of zinc poisoning from the use of products have never been recorded. However, zinc poisoning with this mineral through dietary supplementation is very common.

In order to timely respond to poisoning with this trace element and take all necessary measures, consider the main symptoms and signs of zinc overdose.

More details in the detailed article about Zinc – Women and Men. We need Zinc!

Nausea and vomiting

Gag reflex and nausea are among the most common symptoms of zinc poisoning.

Scientists recently analyzed 17 studies looking at the effect of zinc on the duration of the common cold. The results of the experiments indicated that this trace element can reduce the duration of colds, but causes such a side effect as nausea, which is observed in 46 percent of cases.

Zinc consumption of 225 milligrams per day has been found to cause a gag reflex that occurs soon. At the same time, the use of 570 milligrams of zinc at a time caused severe vomiting, which occurred 30 minutes after taking the supplement.

Researchers have noted that the gag reflex may also occur when a smaller amount of this mineral is consumed. So, when taking 150 mg of this substance, 50 percent of absolutely healthy people experience nausea and vomiting.

Although the gag reflex allows the human body to eliminate excess zinc and get rid of toxic substances, this action may not be enough to prevent the side effects of consuming large amounts of this mineral. In such cases, experts recommend additionally seek medical help.

Diarrhea and abdominal pain

In most cases, abdominal pain and diarrhea with zinc poisoning occur simultaneously with nausea and gag reflex. When conducting experiments, it was found that all four symptoms of poisoning are observed in approximately 40 percent of people. But it is worth noting that severe poisoning can also cause symptoms such as intestinal inflammation and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.

When conducting a study aimed at studying the effect of zinc sulfate on acne, it was found that the use of large doses of this mineral, the volume of which is more than 220 milligrams, causes intestinal bleeding.

Scientists also report that high amounts of zinc chloride, up to 20 percent more than the recommended intake, can lead to corrosive damage to the gastrointestinal tract. Despite the fact that zinc chloride is not used in food additives, its entry into the body can occur due to accidental ingestion of household chemicals into food products.

Flu Symptoms

Excessive intake of zinc can cause flu-like symptoms such as chills, headache, cough, fever, and increased fatigue. Similar symptoms can also appear in case of poisoning with other types of minerals. It is worth noting that with the above symptoms, the definition of zinc poisoning can be difficult.

To determine if the above symptoms are due to zinc poisoning, the doctor will need to review the patient’s medical history, discuss the diet, and conduct a blood test.

Therefore, it is recommended that you report the use of zinc supplements immediately when visiting a doctor.

Low levels of “good” cholesterol

High levels of “good” cholesterol in the blood can significantly reduce the risk of diseases of the cardiovascular system, by reducing the level of “bad” cholesterol, which forms plaque on the walls of the arteries and impedes blood flow. The norm for the level of “good” cholesterol for an adult is 40 mg / dL.

In analyzes of studies examining the effects of zinc on cholesterol levels, 50 milligrams of zinc was found to lower “good” cholesterol levels and not affect “bad” cholesterol levels. At the same time, scientists also found that the use of 30 milligrams of zinc per day does not have any effect on “good” cholesterol.

But experts recommend paying attention to the fact that not only zinc supplements can have a negative impact on the level of this substance.

Altered taste sensations

Zinc is essential for the functioning of the taste buds. A deficiency of this mineral can cause the development of hypogeusia, a condition in which a person practically does not feel the taste of food. It is also worth noting that excessive intake of zinc is also a cause of altered taste sensations. An overdose of this mineral can cause an unpleasant taste of iron in the mouth.

In most cases, these changes are observed when using lozenges or cough syrups containing zinc. However, it should be noted that changes in taste sensations can be caused even by a relatively small amount of the mineral, not exceeding the maximum allowable intake.

In one study, sucking lozenges with a daily dose of 25 mg zinc caused a change in taste in 14 percent of the participants in the experiment, and the use of cough syrup caused a metallic taste in 53 percent of the participants. But at the same time, the duration of the effect was individual for each of the participants.

Therefore, when using syrups and lozenges containing zinc, it should be remembered that even following the recommended norms can cause some side effects.

Copper deficiency

Minerals such as copper and zinc compete with each other for absorption in the small intestine. In this regard, exceeding the recommended intake of zinc can cause a decrease in the level of absorption of copper, which can lead to a deficiency of the latter mineral.

Copper is used by the human body for the absorption of iron, which is necessary for the generation of red blood cells that deliver oxygen to organs and tissues, and white blood cells that ensure the functioning of the immune system.

Copper deficiency caused by excessive zinc intake can cause the following diseases:

iron deficiency anemia – lack of red blood cells due to low iron levels;

sideroblastic anemia – lack of red blood cells caused by impaired absorption of iron;

Neutropenia is a lack of leukocytes due to a violation of their production.

Zinc supplementation is not recommended in the presence of copper deficiency.

Impairment of the immune system

Although zinc is necessary for the normal functioning of the immune system, its excessive amount can cause a decrease in immunity. In most cases, such a reaction of the body is due to the development of anemia or neutropenia. However, the deterioration of the immune system may also be due to the effect of zinc on certain elements in the blood.

One study showed that this mineral can impair the functioning of T-cells, which are used by the body to destroy harmful bacteria and viruses. These cells include leukocytes.

However, the results of other studies were not unambiguous. So, in one study, the use of 150 milligrams of zinc twice a day led to a deterioration in the immune system in the first group, while in the second group, taking 110 milligrams of this mineral three times a day improved immunity.

Ways to treat zinc overdose

If any of the above symptoms occur, experts strongly recommend contacting a poison control center. Due to the fact that an overdose of zinc is very dangerous for humans, this action should be taken immediately.

In the treatment of this condition, doctors may recommend the inclusion of milk in the diet, since the calcium and phosphorus contained in its composition can reduce the level of absorption of this mineral in the gastrointestinal tract. Activated charcoal has a similar effect.

Severe poisonings are treated with chelating agents that trap the zinc elements and remove them from the body through the urine, thereby preventing the absorption of this element.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that some natural products contain several times the daily intake of zinc, cases of natural zinc poisoning have not yet been recorded. However, an overdose of this mineral can be caused by the use of food additives or by accidental ingestion of household chemicals into food.

Zinc can cause both acute reactions of the body and chronic effects, depending on the amount and duration of intake of this trace element. So, high doses can lead to vomiting, intestinal corrosion and internal bleeding, and long-term use of zinc supplements can lead to one of the varieties of anemia or neutropenia and a decrease in the level of “good” cholesterol.

Therefore, you should always consult with your doctor before taking zinc supplements.

The pharmacological activity of Antioxycaps with zinc is due to the complex action of the vitamins contained in it: ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol acetate, beta-carotene and zinc microelement.

Ascorbic acid is involved in the regulation of redox processes in the body, activates carbohydrate-protein metabolism, increases cholesterol metabolism. increases blood clotting, enhances tissue regeneration, synthesis of steroid hormones, collagen and procollagen. It increases the adaptive capacity of the body and enhances its resistance to infections.

Alpha-tocopherol acetate inhibits the oxidation of fats in the body and the formation of toxic peroxides from them, stabilizing the strength of double bonds in unsaturated fatty acids. It normalizes the structure and function of erythrocyte membranes. Tocopherol is involved in the biosynthesis of collagen, heme and proteins, activates cell proliferation, the function of tissue respiration and other important processes of cell metabolism.

Betacarotene has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect due to its ability to bind active oxygen and thus protect cell structures from destruction by free radicals, which are formed in large quantities when exposed to adverse environmental factors or during the development of pathological processes in the body.

Zinc promotes better absorption and action of B vitamins, is an integral part of pancreatic juice, participates in endocrine regulation, the formation of mental reactions, the formation of a number of hormones, incl. and sex. It is also involved in the biochemical reactions of the body, in the process of hematopoiesis.
