Understanding Warts: Causes, Types, and Prevalence

Warts are non-cancerous skin growths caused by viruses, specifically the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear anywhere on the body but are particularly common on hands, fingers, and feet. Plantar warts, also known as verrucas, are warts that specifically occur on the soles of the feet.

How common are warts? They’re extremely prevalent, especially among younger populations. Studies indicate that up to 33% of children and teenagers have warts at any given time. This high prevalence has led to the development of numerous home remedies and over-the-counter treatments.

Are warts dangerous?

Generally, warts are harmless and often painless. However, they can cause discomfort, especially plantar warts, due to the pressure from walking and wearing shoes. Some people may also be bothered by their appearance. While not dangerous, warts are contagious and can spread to other parts of the body or to other people through direct contact.

The Natural Course of Warts: How Long Do They Last?

One of the most important things to understand about warts is that they often resolve on their own without any treatment. This process is known as “watchful waiting.” How long does it take for warts to disappear naturally?

  • About 50% of warts will go away within a year without treatment
  • Two-thirds of warts resolve within two years
  • The timeframe can range from several months to a couple of years

This natural resolution occurs because our immune system eventually recognizes and fights off the virus causing the wart. However, the waiting period can be frustrating for many people, leading them to seek faster solutions through home remedies or medical treatments.

Popular Home Remedies for Warts: What Works and What Doesn’t

There are numerous home remedies touted for wart removal. While some may be effective, others lack scientific evidence. Here’s a breakdown of some popular methods:

The Duct Tape Method

This method involves covering the wart with duct tape for six days, then removing the tape, soaking the area, and filing away dead skin. The process is repeated weekly. Does it work? While some people swear by this method, scientific studies have shown mixed results. It may be worth trying due to its low cost and minimal risk.

Salicylic Acid

Over-the-counter treatments containing salicylic acid are among the most promising home remedies. These products work by gradually peeling away the infected skin. How effective is salicylic acid for wart removal? Studies have shown it to be moderately effective, with success rates around 75% when used consistently over several weeks.

Cryotherapy (Freezing)

Some over-the-counter products use a mixture of dimethyl ether and propane to freeze warts. This method mimics professional cryotherapy treatments but is typically less potent. While these products can be effective, they may require multiple applications and are generally less successful than treatments administered by a healthcare professional.

Folk Remedies

Various traditional remedies like garlic, homemade pastes, pineapple juice soaks, or even bacon fat have been suggested for wart removal. However, there’s little to no scientific evidence supporting these methods, and they’re not generally recommended by medical professionals.

Over-the-Counter Treatments: A Closer Look

Over-the-counter (OTC) treatments for warts often show more promise than purely natural remedies. These products typically fall into two categories:

  1. Salicylic acid-based treatments
  2. Cryotherapy (freezing) treatments

How do these OTC treatments compare to professional treatments? While they contain similar active ingredients, OTC products are generally less potent than those used by healthcare providers. This means they may require more frequent application and longer treatment times. However, they can be effective for many people and are a good first-line treatment option.

When to Seek Professional Help for Warts

While home remedies and OTC treatments can be effective, there are times when it’s best to consult a healthcare provider. When should you see a doctor about warts on your feet?

  • If the wart is very painful
  • If it’s changing in size or shape
  • If it becomes red and irritated
  • If you’ve been trying home remedies for a couple of months without improvement
  • If the wart is in a sensitive area like the face or armpits
  • If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system

Healthcare providers have access to stronger treatments, including prescription-strength salicylic acid, more potent cryotherapy, and other options like laser therapy or surgical removal.

Safety Precautions and What to Avoid

While treating warts at home, it’s crucial to keep safety in mind. What should you avoid when treating warts?

  • Never try to cut off a wart yourself. This can lead to infection and scarring, and the wart is likely to grow back.
  • Avoid using the same file or pumice stone on warts and healthy skin, as this can spread the virus.
  • Don’t pick at warts, as this can also cause them to spread.
  • Be cautious with OTC freezing treatments, as they can damage healthy skin if used incorrectly.

If you have diabetes or circulatory problems, consult your doctor before attempting any at-home treatments, as these conditions can increase the risk of complications.

Preventing Wart Recurrence and Spread

Once you’ve successfully treated a wart, you’ll want to prevent it from coming back or spreading. How can you prevent warts from recurring?

  • Keep your feet clean and dry
  • Wear flip-flops or sandals in public showers and locker rooms
  • Don’t share towels, socks, or shoes with others
  • Avoid touching or scratching existing warts
  • Boost your immune system through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep

Remember, even with these precautions, it’s possible to develop warts again, as the virus can remain dormant in your skin.

The Role of the Immune System in Wart Resolution

Understanding the role of the immune system in wart resolution can help explain why some treatments work and others don’t. How does the immune system fight warts?

When you develop a wart, it means the HPV virus has infected the top layer of your skin. Initially, your immune system may not recognize this infection. Over time, however, your body typically mounts an immune response, attacking the virus and eventually clearing the wart.

This is why warts often disappear on their own given enough time. It’s also why people with weakened immune systems tend to have more persistent warts. Many wart treatments work by irritating the skin, which can trigger a stronger immune response to the area.

Can you boost your immune system to fight warts?

While there’s no guaranteed way to boost your immune system specifically against warts, maintaining overall good health can help. This includes:

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Ensuring adequate sleep
  • Managing stress
  • Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption

Some studies have also explored the use of immune-boosting supplements, like zinc, in wart treatment, but more research is needed to confirm their effectiveness.

Understanding Treatment Timelines and Expectations

When treating warts, it’s important to have realistic expectations about the timeline for improvement. How long does it typically take to remove a wart?

Treatment times can vary widely depending on the size and location of the wart, as well as the treatment method used. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Salicylic acid treatments: May take several weeks to months of daily application
  • Cryotherapy: Often requires multiple treatments spaced 1-3 weeks apart
  • Duct tape method: Can take 1-2 months of consistent application
  • Prescription treatments: Timelines vary, but may show faster results than OTC options

It’s crucial to be patient and consistent with your chosen treatment method. Many people give up too soon, not realizing that even effective treatments can take time to show results.

What if the wart comes back after treatment?

Recurrence of warts is not uncommon, even after successful treatment. If a wart returns, it doesn’t necessarily mean the treatment didn’t work. It could be a new infection, or the virus may have remained dormant in your skin. In these cases, you may need to repeat the treatment or try a different method.

Combining Treatment Methods for Better Results

While many people stick to a single treatment method, combining approaches can sometimes yield better results. How can you combine wart treatments effectively?

Here are some combination strategies that may be worth considering:

  1. Salicylic acid + occlusion: Apply salicylic acid and cover the wart with duct tape or a bandage to increase absorption.
  2. Cryotherapy + salicylic acid: Use an OTC freezing treatment, then apply salicylic acid between freezing sessions.
  3. Physical removal + topical treatment: Gently file the wart with a pumice stone, then apply a topical treatment like salicylic acid.

Always consult with a healthcare provider before combining treatments, especially if using prescription medications.

Can lifestyle changes help in wart treatment?

While not a treatment in itself, certain lifestyle changes can support your body in fighting off warts:

  • Stress reduction: High stress levels can weaken your immune system, potentially making it harder for your body to fight off the wart virus.
  • Improved nutrition: A diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports overall immune function.
  • Adequate sleep: Poor sleep can impair immune function, so aim for 7-9 hours per night.
  • Regular exercise: Moderate exercise has been shown to boost immune function.

These lifestyle factors won’t directly treat warts, but they can support your body’s natural defenses against the virus.

The Psychological Impact of Warts and Treatment

While warts are generally harmless from a physical health perspective, they can have a significant psychological impact. How do warts affect people psychologically?

Many people, especially children and teenagers, may feel embarrassed or self-conscious about their warts. This can lead to:

  • Reduced self-esteem
  • Social anxiety
  • Avoidance of activities (like swimming) that might expose the warts
  • Stress about the warts spreading or recurring

It’s important to address these psychological aspects alongside the physical treatment of warts. Reassurance about the benign nature of warts and the availability of effective treatments can help alleviate anxiety.

How can you cope with the frustration of persistent warts?

Dealing with persistent warts can be frustrating, especially when treatments don’t seem to be working. Here are some coping strategies:

  • Stay patient and persistent with treatments
  • Focus on overall health and immune support
  • Seek support from friends, family, or support groups
  • Consider professional help if the warts are causing significant distress
  • Remember that most warts will eventually resolve, even if it takes time

By addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of wart treatment, you can maintain a positive outlook throughout the process.

Future Directions in Wart Treatment

As medical research continues, new treatments for warts are being explored. What are some promising future directions in wart treatment?

Several innovative approaches are currently under investigation:

  • Immunotherapy: Treatments that stimulate the immune system to fight off the wart virus more effectively
  • Photodynamic therapy: Using light-sensitive drugs and specific wavelengths of light to destroy wart tissue
  • Nanotechnology: Developing nanoparticles that can deliver antiviral drugs directly to wart tissue
  • Genetic therapies: Targeting the specific genes that allow HPV to thrive in skin cells

While these treatments are still in various stages of research and development, they offer hope for more effective and less invasive wart treatments in the future.

Will there ever be a vaccine for all types of warts?

Currently, vaccines exist for some high-risk types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer, but not for the types that commonly cause skin warts. Developing a vaccine for all types of warts is challenging due to the many different strains of HPV that can cause them. However, research in this area is ongoing, and future developments may bring us closer to a comprehensive HPV vaccine that could prevent warts as well.

As we look to the future of wart treatment, it’s clear that a multi-faceted approach combining traditional remedies, modern medical treatments, and cutting-edge research will continue to improve our ability to effectively manage and prevent warts.

Home Remedies for Warts on Bottom of Foot

If you or one of your kids picks up a plantar wart, you might favor a do-it-yourself approach for the demolition project. The good news is that, by and large, warts are harmless, quite frequently painless, and may even go away on their own if you give your immune system enough time (several months to a couple of years). If the wart isn’t bothering you, feel free to plug away with home remedies or even just ignore it.

If you choose to try home remedies or do-it-yourself options, there are plenty of stores that can help you. Try McCabe or Small’s in Cincinnatti, which stocks up on supplies for their winter projects.

The bad news? Don’t expect a quick fix. Like “2-day” home improvement projects that spiral out into two 2 months (or more), warts are notoriously stubborn infections and at-home treatments have shown decidedly mixed success. Most treatment methods (even those administered by a doctor) will require several cycles before the growth is finally removed, if it works at all. Nonetheless, there are a few options you can try out to see if they provide any success.

The duct tape method is commonly attempted, and some say it has worked for them. This strategy involves a weekly cycle where duct tape is placed on the wart for six days. On the seventh day, remove the tape, wash and soak your feet, and file away the top layers of dead skin with a pumice stone or emery board. Let your feet air out, and repeat the process the following week.

Over-the-counter treatments may show some extra promise. These generally use an application of salicylic acid (or a similar chemical) to peel the wart off and a cooling agent (such as a mixture of dimethyl ether and propane) to freeze it away. These treatment methods are similar to some methods used by a doctor, though over-the-counter solutions may not be as strong or as effective.

There are plenty of other supposed traditional folk remedies—garlic, homemade pastes, pineapple juice soaks, even bacon fat—but nothing worth recommending. Whatever you do, don’t try to cut the wart off! Doing a bit of surgery yourself can end up leaving you open for an infection, and chances are the wart will just grow back.

The Best Natural and At-Home Remedies for Verrucas and Warts

June 9, 2021

Key takeaways:

  • Warts are caused by viruses and will typically go away on their own over 1 to 2 years.

  • Some home remedies, like salicylic acid, may be more helpful than others.

  • If you’ve been trying home remedies for a couple of months without improvement, it may be time to visit your doctor.

Warts are usually harmless, but they can be irritating and seem to pop out of nowhere. Some people are also bothered by how warts look. Warts are contagious and extremely common, especially in younger people. In fact, up to 33% of children and teenagers have warts. So it’s no surprise that there are tons of home remedies out there. But which popular home remedies actually work and which one don’t? Read on for answers.

What are warts and verrucas?

Common warts, also known as verruca vulgaris, are non-cancerous skin bumps caused by viruses. Common warts can be found anywhere on the body, but they most often appear on the hands and fingers. Verruca is a term used to describe plantar warts, which are warts specifically on the feet.

Are warts and verrucas dangerous?

Warts are usually totally harmless, but they can cause itching and discomfort. Some people also don’t like the way warts look. If you have plantar warts on the bottom of your feet, they may be more uncomfortable because of the pressure from shoes and walking.

Can you treat all types of warts and verrucas at home?

For the most part, it is fine to try and treat warts and verrucas at home first, unless they are on a sensitive body area like the face or armpits. Those areas can be more prone to irritation from a home remedy. You should see your doctor first if your warts are:

  • Very painful

  • Changing size and shape

  • Becoming red and irritated

Which wart removal home removal remedies work and which ones don’t?

There are countless home remedies out there. You may have one friend who swears by duct tape and vinegar and another friend who hasn’t had any success. So, which popular home remedies actually work and which ones don’t?

Watchful waiting

Because warts are caused by viruses, our bodies are usually able to fight off the virus over time and the wart will go away on its own. In fact, half of the time the warts will go away within a year without any treatment, according to this study on teenagers and school-aged children. If you have a compromised immune system, it may take longer for warts to go away. Adults may be more likely to need treatment for warts.

Duct tape

Even though it’s one of the most popular wart removal home remedies, research is conflicting when it comes to duct tape. It may or may not be helpful. This method consists of covering the wart with a piece of duct tape and changing the tape every few days. It may take a few weeks before you see any results, if at all.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is available over-the-counter and works by wearing down the layers of the wart over time. Sometimes, salicylic acid can cause irritation to the surrounding skin. Overall, studies show that this is an effective home remedy for warts, especially for plantar warts. This may be one of the most-effective home remedies.

Garlic

Garlic extract has some antiviral properties and can be used to remove warts. Research is limited, but one study showed that garlic extract helped treat warts without recurrence after 3 to 4 months.

Apple cider vinegar

Some people swear by apple cider vinegar for the treatment of warts. However, there is no current research that proves it’s effective. It’s relatively safe to try at home, but it may cause skin irritation.

Nail polish

Using clear nail polish on warts is another popular home remedy without any research behind it. The idea is that the nail polish “suffocates” the wart and makes it go away faster.

How do you know if your home remedy for wart or verrucas removal is working?

It may take a few weeks to a few months for home remedies to work. You may notice a decrease in wart size. If you have multiple warts, you may see one or two warts go away. These could be signs that the home remedy is working.

How can you prevent the spread of warts?

Here are some things you can do to make sure your wart doesn’t spread to others:

  • Cover your wart and avoid touching other people’s warts.

  • Keep your hands clean by hand washing.

  • Avoid shaving over your wart. This can spread the virus that causes warts faster.

  • Wear shoes in locker rooms, around pools and changing rooms, and in other warm moist areas.

When should you see a doctor for wart removal?

You may want to see a doctor if:

  • You have been trying home remedies for a few months without any improvements.

  • You have multiple warts in one area.

  • You have warts in a sensitive area like the face, armpits, or genital region.

  • The warts are very irritating and bothersome.

The bottom line

Not all home remedies are created equal. Salicylic acid seems to be the most researched and effective home remedy and can be found over-the-counter. Other home remedies, even though they’re not heavily researched, are usually harmless and may be worth a shot. If you have multiple warts in one location, warts in a sensitive area, wart pain or irritation, or a compromised immune system, you may need to consult your doctor for more effective treatment options.

Elliott M. Perel, DPM, FACFAS: Podiatrist

Warts are noncancerous growths. They form in the epidermis (top layer of your skin) due to an infection with some strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). They’re named by where they’re located on the body — on the hands, they’re called palmar warts, and on the soles of the feet, they’re called plantar warts.

Plantar warts form when the virus penetrates the skin on the soles of your feet through small cuts that could come from any number of sources. Your weight places almost continual pressure on the area, causing the skin to become thick and callused. Plantar warts aren’t inherently harmful, but they may cause some irritation or pain, or some minor bleeding.

Plantar warts become a medical problem if they cause you pain, because that could make you shift the way you stand and walk, leading to complications with your body mechanics.

At Monroe Foot & Ankle Care in Jamesburg, New Jersey, podiatric surgeon Dr. Elliott Perel and his team understand that while plantar warts aren’t generally a medical problem, they can make you feel uncomfortable, which is why they offer a variety of treatments.

How is the virus transmitted?

The HPV strains that cause plantar warts aren’t the same ones that cause genital warts. They aren’t highly contagious or easily transmissible. In fact, some people who come in contact with HPV don’t go on to develop warts.

HPV thrives in warm, moist environments — swimming pools and locker rooms are ideal for it. If you walk around these areas barefoot, you’re more at risk of contracting the virus. The wart forms where the virus enters the skin, but it can spread to other sites, creating new warts as it goes.

Plantar warts are most common in:

  • Children and teenagers
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • People who’ve had previous plantar warts
  • People who walk without foot protection in locker rooms

What do plantar warts look and feel like?

If you have a plantar wart, you’ll probably notice:

  • A small, fleshy, and rough growth on the sole of your foot, often at the heel or the base of the toes and forefoot
  • A growth crossing the normal ridges and lines in the skin
  • A hard callus over a well-defined “spot,” where the wart has grown into the foot
  • Black spots: small, clotted blood vessels often called “wart seeds”
  • Pain or tenderness when standing or walking

How do you treat plantar warts?

A lot of warts clear up by themselves, usually within a two-year period. However, if you’re experiencing pain or irritation, you may want to have the warts removed.

There are a number of home remedies for wart removal, including duct tape, banana peels, and an OTC freezing spray to kill wart tissue. All are only moderately successful, and they take months to see any significant reduction.

You’ll have much more success with an in-office doctor’s treatment. Dr. Perel uses:

Salicylic acid and trichloroacetic acid

The doctor applies prescription-strength salicylic acid to the wart, dissolving it layer by layer. The acid can also trigger your body’s immune system to fight the underlying infection. This method often requires a series of treatments. If you don’t respond after the series, Dr. Perel may use the stronger trichloroacetic acid.

Cryotherapy

This technique removes warts by freezing them off with liquid nitrogen, which destroys the wart’s structure. Dr. Perel applies it gently to just the wart tissue, which will blister and then slough off in about a week. Combining cryotherapy with salicylic acid is even more effective, but you still may require several treatments.

Lasers

A beam of laser energy burns a wart’s blood vessels. Without these to provide nutrition, the wart dies and falls off.

Minor surgery

Dr. Perel uses a scalpel to cut away the growth, reducing your risk for developing new plantar warts. Any scars from the procedure fade away with time.

If you’ve got warts on your feet and want them removed, your best bet is to come in and see Dr. Perel. Give the office a call at 732-521-6166, or schedule your appointment online today.

15 Home Remedies for Warts

Sharing is caring!

In this post we’ll cover a bit of info on what causes warts and wart identification, before giving you a great list of home wart treatments to help you get rid of your warts.

Several many years ago I was blessed with plantar warts on the heel and toe of my right foot. They were fairly large and uncomfortable (heel about the size of a pencil eraser, toe about half that).

This was before I started using natural remedies, so I scheduled a doctor’s appointment to have them removed with a laser.

GAH! Never again! The smell of charred flesh was foul, as was the crater in the bottom of my foot, but the worst part was that the darn things came right back!

I ended up treating with over the counter wart removers, pecking and poking until the darn things finally disappeared.

I was not happy when I recently discovered a Mini Me version of the heel wart had returned. (This is fairly common, since the wart virus can hang around dormant in your system.)  This time I caught the wart early, and am unleashing the full armada of home remedies for warts to knock it out.

Note: This post was originally written in 2014 and updated in 2017 and 2019. I used apple cider vinegar and duct tape on my wart and it was gone before I had a chance to try anything else.

What Causes Warts?

Whether they are common warts (found on hands and other spots), plantar warts (on the soles of the feet), palmer warts (on the palm), flat warts (often found on back of hand, but also elsewhere, smaller and flatter than other warts) or genital/anal warts (found in genital area and nearby real estate), warts are all caused by strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Skin damage, moisture, direct contact with warts or contact with surfaces touched by warty humans, and a stressed out immune system can all contribute to the appearance of warts.

What do Warts Look Like?

It depends on the type of wart. Warts have a wide range of appearances, including but not limited to:

  • black dots on the bottom of your foot
  • lone flat bumps on the back of your hands
  • massive clusters of mangled lumpiness covering large areas of skin

Do an online image search for your wart of choice, and you’ll come up with many photos – but be warned – some are pretty darn scary.

NOTE:  Before considering self-treatment of warts, make sure to get a positive ID. The Skin Cancer Foundation has a 5 point checklist for identifying signs of skin cancer.

Plantar warts are often sore to the touch – which is how I discovered the wart on the bottom of my foot. My heel hurt after a long day on my feet. Then I found the telltale dot.

Here’s another photo from when my eldest found a couple of warts on his foot. (These photos were taken three years apart. Thankfully we are not overly wart prone, but they do show up from time to time.)

Will Warts Go Away on Their Own?

Yes, most warts will disappear on their own over time, but it may take a year or two. Meanwhile, they can be uncomfortable, painful or just embarrassing. Thus, a need for cheap and easy wart removers.

Remember, always consult a trained healthcare provider for serious disease or injury, excessive pain or bleeding. I read some nasty horror stories online while researching about folks who made some bad decisions while attempting home treatment of genital warts that led to secondary infections.

Please be careful! This post is for general information only and is not meant to replace the care of a trained healthcare provider.

#1 – Apple Cider Vinegar for Wart Treatment

As any good home remedy user will know, apple cider vinegar (ACV) is the Queen of Home Remedies. It’s sort of like Windex in “My Big, Fat Greek Wedding” – just use it for whatever’s bothering you. Headaches, sunburn, acid reflux – ACV is a treatment option. It has over 112 positive recommendations as a wart treatment on EarthClinic.

To use vinegar as a wart treatment, simply soak a little cotton ball or some gauze with vinegar and apply to the wart area. Wrap it in place with a bandage or medical tape. I usually apply at bedtime and keep it on overnight, and then let it air out during the daytime.

The wart (and some skin surrounding it) will discolor and die back. Gently abrade and remove the dead wart tissue. Repeat as needed until wart is gone. Take a break if needed if skin area around wart becomes uncomfortable.

#2 – Use Pee to Get Rid of Warts

Urine therapy for warts is applied much the same as ACV. Dip your gauze or cotton ball in the urine and bandage it on the wart area overnight. Urine from the wart-ridden individual is best. A close family member will do in a pinch.

Slough away dead wart material each day. My friend, Adrienne, noted that her son found urine therapy less irritating than apple cider vinegar as a wart treatment. They designated a specific cup for urine collection, and applied the pee most nights over the course of a few weeks until the warts disappeared.

#3 – Duct Tape

I’ve been waiting to use duct tape for a home remedy, because it has a light side and a dark side and holds the universe together, like the force. 😉  The premise is simple – the irritation of the duct tape being stuck to your skin is supposed to get the attention of your immune system faster and send it to vanquish the dreaded wart invader.

Just cut a patch to cover the wart area, stick on, and leave until it falls off. Let air out for a while, repeat.

In between, abrade with a pumice stone and clean wart area to remove dead tissue. Positive aspects of this method are that you can use a smaller patch of duct tape than a typical bandage, and it comes in fun colors.

#4 – Banana Peels

Banana peels contain a proteolytic enzyme that softens and dissolves the wart. Eat your tasty banana, then scrape the whitish interior of the peel and apply in a manner similar to the ACV.

This wart remedy is all over the internet, and is the second most popular recommendation on EarthClinic, so you know it works for many people. Given that what you’re looking for here is the enzymes, I suspect fresh  pulp from papaya, pineapple and figs (which are also high in enzymes), would also work well, if you don’t happen to have bananas on hand.

#5 – Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is another “go to” staple in my kitchen and skin care regime. I use it as an ingredient in my hard lotion bars. Proponents claim that it is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, so it would make sense that it could help ditch warts.

Apply regularly, preferably coating the affected area and bandaging as with the methods above.

#6 – Honey

Honey is another powerhouse of healing, as we discussed in the post “Honey as Medicine“. It contains enzymes, is naturally acidic, and draws excess moisture out of the tissues.

Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand and Australia by bees feeding on manuka (tea tree) plants, which are well known for their medicinal properties. Since tea tree oil is another commonly recommended wart remedy, manuka honey is like getting a two in one punch.

Whichever honey you choose, make sure it’s real honey, not an adulterated product. I buy bulk local honey for general use, but I also keep a container of manuka honey on hand for just this sort of thing. Apply honey to the wart area and bandage, and use follow up treatment in a similar manner to other options listed above.

#7 – Weed Sap

You know the white, sticky stuff that gets on your hands when you break open a dandelion or milkweed stem? That liquid latex can be used to banish warts for good. Some folks apply and bandage, others just apply on a regular basis without bandaging until the wart is gone.

Four weeds that I found referenced for treating warts are:

All of these have white, milky sap and are easy to identify. For more information and photos to help you identify these plants, you can visit their Weekly Weeder posts.

#8 – Aloe Vera

Most people know aloe vera is great for burns and can be used as an herbal antibiotic, but some people also swear by it as a pain free way to remove warts. Erin gives a glowing recommendation at Earth Clinic:

Just wanted to let you know that I have tried everything to get rid of a painful plantar wart on the bottom of my foot. I tried duct tape, ate tons of bananas, tried every OTC thing possible, even Tagament. I could hardly walk because the foot would hurt so bad. It would be red and painful by the end of the day.

Finally tried aloe vera gel. I put it on one night and within two days, I noticed it did not hurt as bad. About a week later, I noticed I could walk without any pain and the wart had turned black.

Almost two weeks later, the wart had dried up and I was able to take a pair of tweezers and pull it completely out. The wart is gone and my foot feels and looks normal except a little dry rough spot where the wart was, a small crater like hole where the wart was that is closing in. I am so happy and relieved as I had the wart for about four months.

#9 – “Voodoo” Remedies

Bizarre but true – the third most popular “wart remedy” listed on Earth Clinic is a category lumped together as “voodoo remedies for warts”. From the lady who stopped hating her wart and started loving it – and watched it disappear, to the grandma who rubbed a raw potato on her grandson’s warts and buried it in the backyard and saw the warts gone in under three weeks, it seems like there’s a good chance that if you believe whatever you’re doing to get rid of the wart will work – it does.

Possibly the coolest home remedy I’ve heard of for warts to date:

“When I was 5 years old, (nearly 60 years ago), I had warts on my hands.

My Grandpa “bought” them from me for a penny. He gave me the penny, told me to go home and not talk for the rest of the day, (hmmmm…could have been a motive there).

Within a couple of days they were gone! Placebo effect maybe but true.”

When I mentioned these wart remedies to my son’s piano teacher this week (Miss Betty of the No Canning Dill Pickles and Rye Bread), she said her grandmother told her that to get rid of warts, you needed to steal a dishcloth from your neighbor and bury it in your backyard.

She wouldn’t let me steal her dishcloth, so my wart’s still here ( 😉 ), but I’m sure one of these remedies will make it just a memory very soon.

Home wart treatment options 10-15 come from the Common Sense Home Facebook page.

#10 – Comfrey Leaf

Jennifer chimed in on Facebook:

“The best wart remedy is comfrey leaf! Put a couple leaves in boiling water and steep it. When it’s cool enough, soak the area with the wart for 20 minutes or so. Do this a couple times a day until they’re gone.

How long is that? I’m sure it varies from person to person.

I had plantar warts on the bottom of one heel when I was about 8 yrs old. When my grandmother saw me not walking on that heal she looked and discovered the plantar warts. She ran outside and grabbed comfrey leaves off her plant and soaked my heel twice a day. No more than one week later they were all gone and have never returned!”

#11 – Turmeric

Karen shared her preferred wart treatment on Facebook, too.

The best paste or poultice to get rid of warts is Turmeric! It has antifungal properties and warts are fungus. Make a paste with it or a small slice of fresh apply and cover. Reapply for a week or more.

It it dries the skin so be willing to every other night if needed and it stains but it works completely. Absorbed into the body and when I used it it also killed the ones I didn’t put it on. Works every time.

Note: As mentioned earlier in the article, warts are caused by a virus, not a fungus, but curcumin (found in turmeric) is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal.

#12 – Garlic

Julie-Eliz recommends garlic to get rid of warts:

“I used garlic slices and Band-Aids. The warts blistered up and after the blisters healed and the dead skin came off the warts went with it. Didn’t hurt and I didn’t mind the garlic smell at all. Took about ten days all together.”

#13 – Essential Oils for Wart Treatment

Carly chose essential oils for wart treatment:

“Thieves essential oil and Natures Aid skin gel (aloe with tea tree, witch hazel, rosemary and vitamin E). I put a few drops of Thieves oil on a cotton swab and wiped the wart and surrounding area with it then covered with a bandage that had Natures aid on it. Did this twice a day and the wart was gone in a week.”

#14 – Aspirin

Another simple wart removal option is plain aspirin. Just dissolve the aspirin (non-coated) in enough water to make a paste, and apply it as a poultice.

#15 – Home Freeze Kits to Remove Warts and Salicylic Acid Wart Removers

Through the miracle of modern technology, you can purchase home freeze kits to get rid of warts. Tracy shares her experience:

“My aunt had really good luck with apple cider vinegar, but after home remedy after home remedy (apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, duct tape, acid etc) I bought a dimethyl ether product and froze my warts and they are finally going away.”

Get a freeze off wart removal kit from Amazon here.

Salicylic acid liquid and gel are other popular over the counter wart treatments. The gel formula is easier to put right where you need it – no drips.

From a Reader – Home Genital Wart Treatment with Kerosene

A reader shared this story with me via email about how they got rid of their genital warts with kerosene.

I had asked God to have mercy on me and reveal to me the cure for the warts I had. The Holy Spirit said to me “kerosene”. So the first thing I did was Google search “warts and kerosene. “

What I found was a comment someone had left on a blog post detailing how her father worked in a foundry and was working one day when his hands were filthy and there was no running water around, so he rinsed his hands with kerosene. The man had warts on his hands and, soon after he had rinsed in kerosene, the warts disappeared!

So this gave me hope. I decided to use a cotton ball to apply kerosene to my genital warts, allow it to dry and then wash it off.

It was painless and I noticed no side effects. I did this every day for a month and I watched as the warts shrunk and eventually they were gone! They never returned!

I wanted to share this somewhat embarrassing story because I remember what it was like to have no hope. I want others to know this remedy, so they too can find relief!

If you decide to use kerosene for warts, please be careful. The kerosene materials safety data sheet notes:

Contact with eyes and face may cause irritation. Long-term exposure may cause dermatitis (itching, irritation, pain and swelling). Kerosene has shown to augment the toxicity of skin sensitizing agents.

Inhalation may cause irritation and significant or long term exposure could cause respiratory insufficiency and pulmonary edema.

10 Natural Treatments For Warts

Plantar warts–the kind that grow on the soles of the feet–are annoying and unsightly to find pop up, but can also be painful as you put pressure on them while walking.  A variety of wart treatments are available. They vary in effectiveness based on the wart type and location.

Here are several wart removal tips and tricks for you to try besides Compound W, freezing, and other standard techniques. Meanwhile, work on prevention at the same time—avoid walking barefoot, don’t share personal hygiene items, and avoid touching all warts—yours and everyone else’s.

What are natural treatments for warts?

Most natural treatments for warts don’t have a lot of research behind them. They have, however, helped people in the past. Because these treatments usually aren’t expensive or harmful, they can be worth a try.

1. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a popular wart treatment that circulates on internet sites. This approach involves soaking a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and applying it to the skin each night before going to bed. Placing a bandage over the wart can help to protect the wart and keep the vinegar in place.

While apple cider vinegar is a natural treatment, it’s still acidic and can cause some pain and discomfort when applied to the skin.

Other plant and herbal solutions

Some herbalist and natural health experts have promoted certain herbs in the treatment of warts. Examples of herbs that may be effective in treating warts include:

  • Echinacea. Also known as the purple cone flower, Echinacea can be taken as an oral supplement to help reduce the incidence of warts. Echinacea is also available as a tea.
  • E. walachii. The juice from this herb can be consumed to help treat warts as well as skin infections.
  • Ficus carica. Latex from this type of fig tree helped to reduce the incidence of warts in study participants, according to an article in the journal Pharmacology Review.
  • Garlic ointments. When applied topically, garlic ointments have been rumored to reduce the incidence of warts. However, there isn’t enough evidence to prove they work.

2. Boost your immune system

Warts are caused by a virus, so one of the best ways to get rid of them is to boost your body’s ability to fight them. In fact, many people notice that warts show up when they’re feeling tired, sick, or worn down. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep and exercising regularly, and use some potent immune boosters like astragalus, elderberry, olive leaf, vitamin C, zinc, turmeric, and cat’s claw.

3. Stop the spread

Not only can warts be passed from person to person, but you can also spread them around your own body through touch. If you touch your wart, for instance, and then touch another part of your body before washing your hands, you may spread the virus, and notice new warts popping up several days later. Be conscious of this, and vigilantly wash your hands.

4. Use pineapple

Apply fresh pineapple directly to the wart several times a day. The natural acids and enzymes will help.

5. Baking powder

Mix baking powder and castor oil into a paste, apply to the wart at night, and cover with a bandage. Repeat daily. You can also try crushed, fresh basil in the same way—or even mix the two together.

6. Vitamins

Crush up a Vitamin C tablet and mix with water to make a thick paste. Apply to the wart and cover with a bandage. You can also try Vitamin E—break a capsule, rub on the wart, and cover.

7. Aspirin

Use Aspirin like the Vitamin C tablet—crush, add a little water, apply the paste to the wart, and cover overnight. Repeat for several nights until gone.

8. Tea tree oil

Apply tea tree oil directly to the wart, then cover with the bandage. Repeat daily. You can also mix with clove and/or Frankincense oils for additional power.

9. Bee propolis

Some people have found success applying bee propolis directly to the wart several times a day. Or try applying at night and covering until morning.

10. Aloe vera

Fresh from the actual aloe vera plant is best. Break off a leaf and rub the gel onto the wart. Aloe contains malic acid. If you don’t have the plant, get the purest form of aloe gel you can find. Cover after each application.

The takeaway

While many warts will go away on their own if left untreated, you can try at-home and natural remedies to help treat them. However, these treatments do not cure the virus that causes warts. As a result, you can get the warts again.

Article SummaryX

If your feet have been exposed to human papillomavirus (HPV) and you develop plantar warts, you can treat them at home by covering them with duct tape for six days, then using a pumice stone to scrape away the dead skin. You could also try using salicylic acid as treatment, either at home or with the help of a healthcare provider. To do it yourself, apply a salicylic acid patch to the affected area each night and remove it each morning for the best effect. Alternatively, you could turn to your doctor, who will likely use cryotherapy to freeze off your warts. For more tips from our Medical co-author, like how to use garlic cloves to treat warts, read on.

Warts | Complementary and Alternative Medicine

What Causes It?

Warts commonly occur in children and young adults, but they may appear at any age. Genital warts are contagious, while common, flat, and plantar warts are less likely to spread from person to person. However, plantar warts may be spread from moist surfaces in communal swimming areas. All warts can spread from one part of the body to another. Some warts will disappear without treatment, although it can take up to 2 years. Whether treated or not, warts that disappear often reappear.

Warts are caused by various strains of a common virus in humans, the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are more likely to occur if the skin has been broken or damaged in some way. The following factors increase your risk of developing warts:

  • Direct contact with warts or the fluid in warts (notably genital warts)
  • Using communal facilities (such as locker rooms)
  • Skin trauma
  • Diseases or drugs that weaken your immune system

What to Expect at Your Provider’s Office

Most warts can be diagnosed by location and appearance. Your health care provider may want to cut into a wart to verify that it is not a corn, callus, or other growth. Your provider is unlikely to order laboratory tests, however, you may receive a sonogram to confirm plantar wart diagnosis. If you have genital warts, your provider will check inside your anus and (in women) vagina.

Treatment Options

In most cases, the best treatment is no treatment at all because most warts will disappear over time without any intervention. Studies show that one half of cutaneous warts resolve spontaneously within one year, and about two-thirds within two years. Some research shows 70% of warts clear within 3 months without any treatment. For warts that are painful or unsightly, medical treatments include drug therapy (application of salicylic acid), cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen (“freezing” the wart to destroy tissue), electrosurgery (burning), lasers, and cutting out the wart.

Other potential treatments include bleomycin (an anticancer drug that is injected into the wart), interferon (a treatment to boost the body’s immune reaction to the wart), and other forms of immunotherapy. Preliminary research suggests that immune stimulants like
Propiorium bacterium parvum
may help the body produce antibodies and destroy warts. Preliminary studies suggest injections of vitamin D3 into the base of plantar warts resolves the issue in 80% of patients. There is even some anecdotal evidence that applying duct tape and leaving it in place for 6 days, can help treat common warts. Simply repeat the process every 6 days, leaving the wart uncovered for 12 hours before covering it for another 6 days until the wart resolves. Unless your wart is causing significant problems, you should avoid treatments that have risks or could result in scarring.

Drug Therapies

Common, flat, and plantar warts

Nonprescription preparations using salicylic acid are available over the counter. Special cushions are available to relieve pressure and pain from plantar warts. Your doctor may prescribe medications in some instances.

Genital warts

In most cases, if you are healthy and not pregnant, your health care provider will either apply podophyllin weekly or prescribe a podofilox for you to apply. A vaccine is now available to protect women against contracting the HPV virus responsible for genital warts. The vaccine is 90% to 100% effective in protecting against HPV.

Complementary and Alternative Therapies (CAM)

Nutritional and herbal support may enhance immune function and minimize recurrence of HPV, the virus that causes warts. Work with a knowledgeable physician to find the therapies or supplements that are right for you. Natural supplements may interact with a variety of medications. Always inform all of your providers about any supplements or therapies you are using.

Nutrition and Supplements

These nutritional tips may help reduce symptoms:

  • Try to eliminate suspected food allergens, such as dairy (milk, cheese, and ice cream), wheat (gluten), soy, corn, preservatives, and chemical food additives. Your provider may want to test you for food allergies.
  • Eat foods high in B-vitamins and calcium, such as almonds, beans, whole grains (if no allergy is present), dark leafy greens (such as spinach and kale), and sea vegetables.
  • Eat antioxidant-rich foods, including fruits (such as blueberries, cherries, and tomatoes), and vegetables (such as squash and bell peppers).
  • Avoid refined foods, such as white breads, pastas, and sugar.
  • Eat fewer red meats and more lean meats, cold-water fish, tofu (soy, if no allergy is present) or beans for protein.
  • Use healthy cooking oils, such as olive oil or coconut oil.
  • Reduce or eliminate trans fatty acids, found in commercially-baked goods, such as cookies, crackers, cakes, French fries, onion rings, donuts, processed foods, and margarine.
  • Eliminate caffeine, alcohol, refined foods, and sugar.
  • Avoid caffeine and other stimulants, alcohol, and tobacco.
  • Exercise, if possible, 5 days a week.

You may address nutritional deficiencies with the following supplements:

  • A multivitamin daily
, containing the antioxidant vitamins A, C, E, the B-complex vitamins and trace minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, and selenium.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
, such as fish oil, to boost immunity. Cold-water fish, such as salmon or halibut, are good sources. Omega-3 fatty acids can have a blood-thinning effect, so speak with your doctor if you are taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin and Coumadin.
  • Probiotic supplement
    (containing
    Lactobacillus acidophilus
). For maintenance of gastrointestinal and immune health. Refrigerate probiotic supplements for best results. People with severely weakened immune systems should speak to their doctors before taking probiotics.
  • Grapefruit seed extract
    (
    Citrus paradisi
). For antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activity, and for immunity. Grapefruit products may interact with a variety of drugs. Speak with your physician.

Herbs

Herbs may help strengthen and tone the body’s systems. As with any therapy, you should work with your provider to diagnose your problem before starting treatment. Some herbs may have side effects or interact with certain medications you are taking, so you should speak with your provider before starting any herbal therapy. You may use herbs as dried extracts (capsules, powders, and teas), glycerites (glycerine extracts), or tinctures (alcohol extracts). Unless otherwise indicated, make teas with 1 tsp. (5 grams) herb per cup of hot water. Steep covered 5 to 10 minutes for leaf or flowers, and 10 to 20 minutes for roots. You may use tinctures alone or in combination as noted.

  • Green tea
    (
    Camellia sinensis
). For antioxidant effects. Use caffeine-free products. You may also prepare teas from the leaf of this herb. Ointment made from green tea extract has been shown to be effective for genital and anal warts.
  • Cat’s claw
    (
    Uncaria tomentosa
). For antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activity, and for immune support. Cat’s claw can interfere with many different medications; speak to your doctor. DO NOT use cat’s claw if you have Leukemia.
  • Reishi mushroom
    (
    Ganoderma lucidum
). For antiviral and immunity activity. You may also take a tincture of this mushroom extract. Reishi mushrooms can lower blood pressure and slow blood clotting. As such, it may increase the effects of medications for blood pressure and blood thinning. Speak with your doctor.
  • Olive leaf
    (
    Olea europaea
). For antiviral and immune activity. You may also prepare teas from the leaf of this herb. Olive leaf may lower blood pressure and/or blood sugar levels.

Topical applications may also be effective for treating warts. Stop any topical application if irritation develops in the surrounding skin. For plantar, flat, and common warts use the following applications:

  • Banana peel patch.
Cut a piece of banana peel and place it over the wart before going to bed. Tape in place.
  • Raw garlic patch.
Cover the wart and surrounding skin with a thin layer of castor oil or olive oil. Apply a thin slice of fresh garlic and tape in place. Never use castor oil on a small child.

To maximize benefit, place 2 to 4 drops of tincture of thuja or tea tree oil (
Melaleuca alternifolia
) on the wart before covering with peel or garlic. DO NOT use tea tree oil internally. This application may need to be repeated nightly for up to 3 weeks. The wart will turn black as it begins to die. Use only commercially-prepared products that are formulated for this type of use. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or nose. Never use internally. If you are pregnant or nursing, speak to your doctor before using these topical remedies.

For external genital warts, paint the warts with vitamin A or beta-carotene once or twice daily. Add 3 to 4 drops each of
thuja, echinacea, and lomatium
for best results. Use only commercially-prepared products that are formulated for this type of use. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, or mouth. Never use internally. DO NOT use vaginal treatments if you are pregnant, unless specifically directed to do so by your doctor.

Homeopathy

Two well designed trials evaluating the use of homeopathy in the treatment of common and plantar warts found that the remedies were no more effective than placebo in reducing the number of warts. Despite the lack of evidence from these two trials, professional homeopaths might recommend one of the following treatments for warts based on their knowledge and clinical experience. Before prescribing a remedy, homeopaths take into account your constitutional type, including your physical, emotional, and intellectual makeup. An experienced homeopath assesses all of these factors when determining the most appropriate remedy for a particular individual.

  • Antimonium crudum
. For either rough and hardened or smooth warts, as well as plantar warts in otherwise healthy people.
  • Causticum
. For fleshy warts anywhere on the body, but particularly those near the fingernails, lips, or on the face.
  • Dulcamara
. For large, smooth, and flat warts on the face, fingers, or back of the hand.
  • Nitricum acidum
. For soft warts on the genitals, anus, or lips. These warts are often irregularly shaped and may bleed and produce an excessive pain.
  • Ruta
. For plantar warts, particularly if they are sore and have a smooth surface.
  • Thuja
. For warts of any location, except plantar. This remedy may be particularly useful for warts that are on the chin, anus, or genitals, and are generally soft and bloody or painful.

Physical Therapies

In one study of 40 people, hypnosis resolved more warts than either topical salicylic acid, or a placebo (dummy treatment). In a study of localized topical treatment, 86% of the treated warts cleared compared to 41% of placebo-treated warts.

Even with treatment, some warts may return. Genital warts are more likely to return because there is no cure for the virus that causes them, and because warts are more difficult to control in a moist environment.

Acupuncture may help stimulate your immune system.

Special Considerations

DO NOT use podophyllin if you are pregnant.

Expert opinion

I have always had a lot of papillomas on my body. They did not give me much discomfort, so I never thought about treatment. After I turned 40, I noticed that there are more of them, and with great speed. I went to the hospital, where I was diagnosed with papillomavirus and prescribed a very expensive and voluminous treatment. I didn’t have enough money to buy all the drugs, so I decided to find some analogues. At the women’s forum I was advised by Papiderm. Real reviews of real people – regulars of the forum, became for me irrefutable proof of the effectiveness of the drug. I bought it on the official website, took it inside and processed the largest papillomas outside.Within a week, most of them were halved! And after another 2 weeks, even those that I had not processed disappeared. I am very pleased with the result, I recommend Papiderm to everyone!
