When shopping for flaxseed, you might come across golden and brown varieties—both taste lightly nutty, but brown flaxseed has a slightly earthier flavor.
The key thing to know about eating flaxseed is you need to grind it before you eat it. Nothing bad will happen if you ingest the whole seeds, but our bodies can’t naturally break them down to digest all the nutritional goodness bound within. To get the health benefits (more on that below!), you’ll either have to chop or grind whole flaxseed—a small spice or coffee grinder will do the trick. Only grind what you need, as flaxseed tends to spoil quickly once it’s ground. You can buy bags of pre-ground flaxseed meal at the store if you need the convenience factor, but it’s best to use up your supply quickly, as it can start to go rancid a few weeks after opening the package.

Like other plant-based foods, flaxseed is rich in antioxidants. These can help prevent disease by removing molecules called free radicals from the body.
Free radicals occur as a result of natural processes and environmental pressures. If there are too many free radicals in the body, oxidative stress can develop, leading to cell damage and disease. Antioxidants help remove free radicals from the body.
Flaxseed is a good source of lignans, which appear to have antioxidant properties.
According to some scientists, flaxseed may be over 800 times richer in lignans than most other foods.

Reducing the risk of cancer
Flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids. Research suggests that these may help prevent different types of cancer cells from growing.
Flaxseed also contains lignans, which are antioxidants that may slow tumor growth by preventing them from forming new blood vessels.
One 2013 survey found a lower incidence of breast cancer among females who consumed flaxseed regularly.
Also, in 2018, the authors of a review concluded that flaxseed may help reduce the risk of breast cancer after menopause.
Lignans are a type of phytoestrogen, which is a plant-based nutrient that acts in a similar way to estrogen. There has been some concern that phytoestrogens may increase the risk of breast cancer, but recent research suggests that they may play a protective role.

Improving cholesterol and heart health
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommend eating more fiber and omega-3s to boost heart health. Lignans, too, may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Flaxseed contains all of these nutrients.
Flaxseed also contains phytosterols. Phytosterols have a similar structure to cholesterol, but they help prevent the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines.
Consuming phytosterols may therefore help reduce levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol in the body.
In 2010, researchers looked at the effect of flaxseed on the cholesterol levels of males with moderately high cholesterol. Participants took either a 20 milligram (mg) capsule containing lignans, a 100 mg capsule, or a placebo for 12 weeks.
Cholesterol levels fell after taking lignans, especially in those who took the 100 mg capsules.
The researchers behind a 2012 study involving 17 people found that consuming flaxseed lowered LDL cholesterol levels and helped the body remove fat, although they note that the overall diet may also play a role. The team suggested that dietary flaxseed may be useful for lowering cholesterol levels.
Some scientists have also linked omega-3 oils, which are usually present in oily fish, to reductions in cardiovascular risk. Researchers have suggested that flaxseed could offer an alternative to marine sources of omega 3. This could make it a useful resource for people who follow a plant-based diet.

Easing the symptoms of arthritis
According to the Arthritis Foundation, flaxseed may help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Some people take it for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Raynaud’s phenomenon.
They add that there is a lack of evidence to support its use for this purpose, but they say that the ALA in flaxseed may help reduce inflammation.
People can take it:
- ground (one tablespoon per day)
- as an oil (one to three tablespoons per day)
- in capsules (1,300–3,000 mg per day)

Reducing hot flashes
In 2007, a team of scientists published results suggesting that flaxseed may help reduce the incidence or severity of hot flashes in women not using estrogen therapy during menopause.
In 2012, however, further research by the same team concluded that flaxseed did not, in fact, make any difference.
Improving blood sugar
Lignans and other phytoestrogens may help reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes.
In 2013, scientists gave 25 people 0 g, 13 g, or 26 g of flaxseed every day for 12 weeks. The participants had prediabetes and were either males with obesity or overweight or females who had undergone menopause.
The 13 g dosage appeared to lower glucose and insulin levels and improve insulin sensitivity, but the other dosages did not have this effect.
Also, a 2016 rodent study suggested that the compounds in flaxseed may help reduce the incidence of type 1 diabetes and delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. These results may not be applicable to humans, however.
The same year, 99 people with prediabetes took 40 g or 20 g of flaxseed or no flaxseed and no placebo each day for 12 weeks. Consuming flaxseed appeared to reduceblood pressure, but it did not improve blood sugar levels or insulin resistance.
The benefits of flaxseed on the symptoms of diabetes remain unclear.
Which foods can lower blood sugar?
Preventing constipation
Flaxseed is a good source of insoluble fiber, which does not dissolve in water, instead remaining in the digestive tract after eating. There, it absorbs water and adds bulk, which may help promote regularity.
However, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) say that there is little evidence to suggest that flaxseed helps reduce constipation.
The NCCIH add that consuming flaxseed with too little water can worsen constipation and may lead to an intestinal blockage.
Also, too much flaxseed or flaxseed oil can cause diarrhea.

Reducing the impact of radiation
In 2013, scientists found evidence to suggest that dietary lignans from flaxseed helped mice recover from radiation exposure.
The mice that consumed lignans had lower levels of inflammation, injury, oxidative damage, and fibrosis, as well as a better survival rate, compared with those that did not.
If further tests in humans show similar results, lignans from flaxseed could help treat lung issues following exposure to radiation or radiation therapy.

The basic flax-egg recipe is 1 tablespoon of finely ground flaxseed powder (if you have whole flaxseed, use a coffee grinder to grind the seeds into a powder) to 3 tablespoons of water, which replaces one egg. The mentioned family tree includes about one and a half hundred varieties of the plant we are interested in, but there are also such classifications that speak of both 100 and 200 species. In short, there is a lot of flax on the planet – for every taste! For example, laxative, tauric, tree-like, bell-shaped.Which one is the best for you? 😉
The flax family is also a fairly large group of related plants, which numbers up to 14 genera, and they, in turn, consist of 300 species.
Perhaps, of all the members of this family, we have heard only about flax, since its other representatives have more than strange names: Duranday, Indoorukhera, Reinwardtia, Gugonia.
There is also a radiola in this herbaceous community, which is often confused with Rhodiola, belonging to the Fat family.Here is such a strange relationship with flax.
But let’s return, perhaps, to him – the hero of my article today. An ordinary representative of the flax genus looks like an annual herb with a fairly well-developed root system. It has a small, but fully developed white root, from which a certain number of primary roots depart, and these, in turn, have thinner numerous root filaments.
Above the ground, sowing flax looks more confident than under it, since its stems can grow not only 60 centimeters, but all one and a half meters.They are erect, but rather thin. If you look closely at the flax, you can see that its stems are cylindrical in shape. They are colored light green and branch only in their upper part.
Remarkable is the fact that the linseed bushes are covered with a barely noticeable wax bloom.
There are many leaves on the branches of the plant, and their length rarely exceeds 3 centimeters, and their width varies from 3 to 4 millimeters. Linseed foliage can be either linear or linear-lanceolate.At the very top of the stems are the largest bluish-green lanceolate leaves with pointed tips. They, like the whole bush, are greased with wax.
At the time of its flowering, the stems of the plant are decorated with pretty corollas. They can be both small and medium – with a diameter of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters. As a rule, flax has few flowers and they are collected in twisting inflorescences. Their petals are usually 12 to 15 millimeters long, smooth or slightly corrugated. Flax can bloom in blue, light blue, white, pink, red, violet-red flowers.
Flax is most often decorated with blue flowers, and a whole field of such bushes looks like waves of the sea.
The fruits of the plant are small capsules 6 to 8 millimeters long and 5.5 to 6.8 millimeters in diameter. They are found both flattened-spherical and ovoid-spherical in shape. Inside these small natural boxes, behind bare or ciliated partitions, the very seeds of flax are hiding from the outside world.
The maximum number of grains in one such “package” reaches 10, but sometimes even less.Flaxseeds are ovoid or elliptical in shape, pointed at the ends and rounded at the base. They are flat, small – no more than 5 millimeters long. As a rule, these grains are colored in various shades of brown, but can also be light and even greenish-yellow. Moreover, the seeds of any type of flax are smooth and highly shiny.

How are flax seeds harvested?
I’ll run a little ahead and tell you what you probably already knew.Flax is a very ancient plant, the seeds of which people have been collecting from time immemorial. And during this long time, special rules have been developed to optimize this process.
Interestingly, flax seeds are a by-product of the collection of flax stalks, which are used to make fiber.
It is believed that the best time to harvest from a flax field is after a light rain, but not immediately, but when the stems of the plant dry out a little in the wind.After all, completely raw will be confused with each other. In addition, wet flaxseed will take longer to dry, and during this time it can even become moldy. For this reason, grain collectors refrain from harvesting grain after showers.
If nature does not indulge in rains, then you have to collect flax seeds right during a drought. In this case, you need to very carefully pull out the dried stems from the ground so as not to break them. In any case, you need to wait until the stems turn yellowish.
The ideal time to harvest the flaxseed crop is early in the morning, but after the morning dew has dried out a little.
The most important thing in the collection process is not to confuse the stems of the bushes with each other, otherwise it will be difficult to process the stems later.
It often happens that flax ripens unevenly within the same field, so you have to sort the plants right in the process of harvesting them. So, one group of collectors pulls out the highest stems – first-class, and the other – smaller bushes, second grade. If the harvesting process is mechanized, then the plants are uprooted from the soil using a special machine.
After all the flax has been removed, it is knitted in sheaves and left to dry in the sun. After that, the heads with seeds are separated from the stems, and then they are additionally dried in the sun, and then transferred to storage in a clean, dry place.

History of Flax Seeds
The variety of plants that we use as food and medicine is cultivated and is no longer found in the wild today. It is believed that this species originated from narrow-leaved flax, which to this day grows by itself in the territory of the modern Mediterranean.
However, the Chinese and Indian mountainous regions are also considered the birthplace of flax. Archaeologists have established that even in ancient times this plant was grown for the production of fabrics. So, on the territory of Ancient Egypt about 9000 years ago, people used it as a textile. Presumably, the first linen clothes were made there (they must have wrapped mummies!).
By the way, the Egyptians considered flax to be the very first plant given to people by heavenly inhabitants!
A couple of millennia later, linen fabric spread throughout Babylon and Assyria.Then the ancient Romans, Greeks and Indians joined the lovers and connoisseurs of such natural clothes. Famous figures of ancient culture Homer, Theophrastus, Herodotus wrote about this plant. The healers of those years did not lag behind them. So, the famous Hippocrates, whose oath every physician is obliged to take today, pointed out that a slimy decoction of flax seeds is good for digestive problems.
He was echoed by the ancient Roman erudite Pliny the Elder, who advised the use of these useful grains for those who suffer from diseases of the respiratory tract, urogenital area.He believed that this natural medicine could be effective for female ailments as well as for boils.

It is believed that flax seeds came to Russia from Asia. The first written evidence of its cultivation dates back to the X-XI centuries. Even in the era of Kievan Rus, people obtained valuable oil from the grains of the plant, with which they effectively treated burns. Today, flax bushes grow successfully even in the most unfavorable climatic conditions of the Russian Federation – in its northern regions and areas with dry weather. At the same time, the costs of sowing and collecting raw materials are minimal, and the volume of crops and exports is high.

Flax seeds caught our attention with their packaging.There are two types of this product on the shelves: regular flax seeds and ground. We decided to sample a package of ground seeds.
Flax seeds – a specific product, for an amateur. They are, of course, very useful, but you may not like their taste. They smell slightly of fish oil, which is not surprising – they contain a lot of Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 acids. Therefore, to improve the taste, flax seeds are advised to be used with kefir, jelly or in baked goods.
Packaging
Ground flax seeds are packed in a paper bag with a transparent polyethylene insert, and then in a thick paper bag.This packaging looks very stylish and immediately stands out on the shelf. The green color of the packaging is for ground seeds, blue for whole seeds.
