Your thymus gland sits below your thyroid gland and above your heart. It’s pinkish-gray in color and shaped like two ovals.

The thymus is a unique organ in that it works before birth and throughout puberty. When you hit puberty, the gland starts to shrink and fatty tissue replaces it.

By the time you reach age 75, your thymus gland is usually nothing more than fatty tissue. As you age, your thymus gland gets smaller and can become less effective.

Although the thymus gland stops working pretty early on in life, it still fulfills several key purposes. The thymus is responsible for producing and releasing the hormone thymosin. This hormone is responsible for stimulating the production of T lymphocytes, or T cells for short.

These immune system cells help ward off infection in the body. Once produced in the thymus, T cells travel to your lymph nodes, where they fight infection.

Scientists also study T cells for their potential cancer-fighting abilities.

Thymus extract is made from the thymus glands of cows, typically calves. It can also be synthetically produced.

Note that there is a difference between thymus extract and extract from Thymus serpyllum. The latter comes from the thyme plant, and not cows.

Since the thymus gland is an important part of the immune system in both animals and people, some people think thymus extract has medicinal benefits. They believe that consuming it can boost your immune system, helping you fight off various diseases.

The idea of using animal glands or organs for medicinal purposes is hundreds of years old. Also known as glandular therapy, this concept is based on the belief that “like heals like.”

For example, glandular therapists believe that consuming nutrients from an animal’s healthy liver can help repair your liver if it’s damaged.

In the 1900s, scientists began to look for active chemicals in organ foods that have health benefits. Scientists and manufacturers have since isolated many chemicals, such as thyroid extracts, estrogen, and cortisol. Thymus extract is one of the chemicals they’ve extracted.

Thymus extract is now sold as a dietary supplement. It’s also sold in a more purified form, called thymomodulin. Both varieties are available in capsule, pill, or liquid form at many health stores and online.

Some evidence suggests that thymus extract might help ward off respiratory infections, such as bronchitis. This research has focused on people prone to respiratory infections.

Other reasons a person may take thymus extract include fighting off hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and sinusitis, which can all affect the respiratory system.

Thymus extract is also sometimes taken to help treat eczema (atopic dermatitis), an inflammatory skin condition that can develop alongside hay fever and allergic asthma.

Some asthma attacks are triggered by an overactive immune system. Some research suggests that taking thymomodulin helps reduce the severity of asthma attack symptoms. It may also help reduce the frequency of asthma attacks.

Some people have used thymus extract to treat conditions such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. It’s thought that the supplements may boost your immune system and help your body fight against these viral infections.

However, you should exercise extreme caution when taking any supplement for an active viral infection, especially if your immune system is compromised due to HIV. Some animal-derived supplements may be contaminated.

Thymus extract is sometimes marketed as an alternative treatment for autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis (MS), Graves’ disease, and Celiac disease.

Autoimmune diseases develop when your body mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues by treating them as invaders. Older research from 1976 has explored the possibility that thymus extract may help reverse thymosin imbalances that may contribute to such diseases.

However, it’s not clear whether thymus extract can help reverse the effects or prevent the progression of any autoimmune disease.

Allergic reactions happen when your immune system treats an otherwise harmless substance as a threat. As a result, it goes into attack mode.

Some people believe that thymus extract may help calm rather than boost your immune system if you have food allergies. Thymomodulin may help prevent allergic reactions, as reported in a 2015 study.

Thymus extract is sometimes added to cosmetics and hair care products as an anti-aging ingredient. The extract contains amino acids and peptides, which are thought to help keep the skin supple and smooth.

Ingredients lists on skin care products may call bovine thymus “bovine collagen.” The extract is added to moisturizers, facial masks, and more.

These are drugs, the prototypes of which are natural bioregulators produced by organs or individual tissues that transmit information and control many biochemical reactions. Such substances have a peptide-protein nature and are called cytomedins; they are able to regulate the cell population from which they are isolated. And they are isolated from the tissue of the brain, thymus, bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes.

Thymic immunoregulatory peptides are represented by Taktivin , Thymosin , Thymalin , Timaktide , Thiostimulin [23]. All drugs contain thymosin-alpha and are largely close to each other in action.

The thymus is a unique organ of the neuroendocrine and immune systems capable of producing hormones: thymopoietin (blocks neuromuscular transmission, affects the precursors of T-lymphocytes), thymic humoral factor (activates T-cells), thymic factor X (restores the number of T-lymphocytes ), thymulin (affects the stages of differentiation of T-lymphocytes and T-killers), thymosin-alpha 1 (affects the early stages of T-cells and T-helpers), thymosin-alpha 3 (ACTH-like action), thymosin-alpha 7 (affects the differentiation of T-suppressors and the late stages of T-lymphocytes), thymosin-beta 4 (early stages of T-lymphocyte differentiation), etc. [116]. Under the action of these hormones, the maturation of thymus-dependent lymphocytes in the thymus and outside it, which are responsible for cell-type immune responses, occurs. Indirectly, hormones affect the activity and maturation of macrophages and natural killers, stimulate antibody formation.

Thymus preparations have been known since the 1970s and have been widely used by foreign oncologists for special treatment for 30 years [54]. Initially, extracts from animal organs were isolated to compensate for 50-70% of thymus deficiency in the elderly with the ultimate goal of rejuvenating the body.

Thymosin is the first thymus peptide. Isolated from calf thymus in the laboratory of the University of Texas School of Medicine at 1965 A.L. Goldstein’s 28 polypeptide components were named thymosin. In an animal experiment, it was proved that the drug is able to restore immunoreactivity. Later it was found that only a part of the molecule, called thymopentin, has activity.

Thymosin stimulates and modulates various functions of T-suppressors and natural killers, stimulates the formation of a number of lymphokines, promotes the maturation of lymphocytes [51]. There is evidence that thymosin is involved in the interaction of the immune and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal systems. Thymosin increases the secretion of gonadotropins, and when steroids act on the thymus, the production of its own thymosins decreases.

Thymogen-alpha1 analog zadaxin, identical to the human thymus peptide, has been synthesized to be used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis and as an adjuvant (immune response enhancement) for influenza vaccination. Thymosin-beta 4 was isolated from the heart of the embryo, which in mice not only helps to reduce the scar in myocardial infarction, but also reduces the size of the left ventricle during its dilation.

Taktivin is obtained from bovine thymus. In immunodeficiency states, the drug normalizes the quantitative and functional parameters of T-lymphocytes, regardless of whether they were reduced or increased before treatment. Stimulates the production of lymphokines, including alfa- and gamma-interferons, restores the activity of T-killers and stem hematopoietic cells.

Active in persistent disorders of T-cell immunity arising from infectious and purulent processes, lymphoproliferative diseases, tuberculosis. The drug is effective only in cases where the deficiency of T-lymphocytes is the main pathogenetic link of the disease.

In malignant tumors, Taktivin is prescribed 1 ml (100 mcg) of a 0.01% solution subcutaneously once a day for 5-6 days during breaks in specific therapy, then maintenance therapy 1 time in 7-10 days until the parameters of the T-immunity system normalize . To prevent postoperative infection, Taktivin is administered within 2 days before and 3 days after the intervention.

To prevent purulent-septic complications after radical mastectomy, 12 patients were injected with 400 μg of 0.01% taktivin on days 1, 2, 5 and 7 subcutaneously into the forearm tissue, then the cuff of the AKPU-5 pneumatic unit was applied to the hydration infiltrate. It was assumed that this creates a high concentration of Taktivin in the lymphatic fluid [75]. Initially, all patients had a decrease in cellular and humoral immunity. As a result of therapy, the number of T-lymphocytes, Ig A, M, G, plasma cells increased. The level of B-lymphocytes did not change.

Some authors recommend preparing the release of T-cell precursors from the bone marrow with methyluracil or sodium nucleinate for 7-10 days before prescribing Taktivin [50]. The drug is contraindicated in atopic bronchial asthma.

Timalin is obtained by extraction from the thymus gland of cattle, consists of 38 amino acids. Immunomodulator and biostimulator. Regulates the number and ratio of T- and B-lymphocytes and their populations, stimulates cellular immunity reactions, enhances phagocytosis. Timalin affects cyclic nucleotides and calcium metabolism and thus activates cell proliferation and differentiation. Improves the processes of cellular metabolism, thereby accelerating tissue regeneration.

Thymomulin – extract isolated from calf thymus, consists of two fractions. It belongs to pleiotropic hormones due to the influence on two systems: immune and nervous.

Able to increase the number and activity of T-lymphocytes, suppresses the induction of early and induces late differentiation of B-lymphocytes.

Intramuscular injection of 1 mg/kg of body weight per day for the first week, then 2-3 times a week. Duration depends on individual effectiveness. It is rarely used in Russia, probably due to the availability of low-cost domestic drugs.

Bone marrow immunoregulatory peptides are peptides produced by bone marrow cells represented by Myelopid . Myelopeptides (MPs) are not species-specific, that is, derived from an animal, they work successfully in humans or other animal species.

The first of the discovered biological activities of myelopeptides was their ability to stimulate the production of antibodies at the peak of the immune response, and the response was enhanced with a lack of antibody-producing cells by “turning on” reserve cells [30].
