You’re actually wondering about what to wear to the Gym?

Although going to the gym shouldn’t be a fashion show, it’s still important to look good. Besides, when you look good, you feel good.

Wearing comfortable clothing that you feel confident in and that allow for ease of movement will help you feel better about your workouts and maybe even keep you a bit more motivated.

If you have just embarked on a new exercise program, this blog will clear up any questions about what you need to bring to the gym or what to wear to the gym.

And yes, if you’re currently exercising, this will serve as a refresher and give you some tips to increase your comfort level while being active. By the way, better clothes can keep gym boredom at bay. 

Workout Clothes

The type of material that you choose to wear to the gym should allow you to feel dry, comfortable, and confident. Your main focus while exercising should be giving it your all, and you shouldn’t be self-conscious or uncomfortable in the clothing you are wearing.

Depending on the type of workout you are performing, different clothing may be required. The cut of the clothes you wear to the gym should allow you to move freely without constricting your movements. You will be moving around and bending often while exercising, so the clothes you wear should allow for flexibility.

Look for clothing made of synthetic material such as nylon, acrylic, or polypropylene for a good balance of functionality and comfort. Cotton is probably the most common workout fabric, as it is reasonably priced, breathable, and comfortable.

However, it tends to hold moisture and become quite heavy if you sweat. Depending on the climate and your comfort level, a fitted T-shirt or tank top (made of the materials noted above) with comfortable pants or gym shorts are ideal exercise clothing options.

Training Shoes

Before deciding on a shoe, it’s important to try on a few until you find the one that feels just right. While at the store, test the potential shoe out by walking around the store and jumping up and down.

To find the ideal fit, it is also important to wear socks that you would be wearing while you exercise. In addition, make sure you choose the shoe that is right for the activity it will be used for.

Runners: The right running shoe should provide stability, motion control, and cushioning for your runs. Depending on the shape of your foot you may need a different sized arch. Talk to a salesperson that specializes in running shoes to find your best fit.

Walking shoes: An ideal walking shoe should allow for a range of motion and cushioning.

Cross-trainers: These are most commonly worn in the gym. These shoes are ideal for someone who occasionally runs, walks, and/or takes fitness classes. They should offer flexibility, cushioning, and lateral support.


When choosing socks to wear to the gym, don’t make the dreaded mistake of sporting dress socks with running shoes. Choose white or gray socks that allow your feet to breathe and are comfortable to train in.

Wear socks made from acrylic or an acrylic blend. This material doesn’t retain moisture as cotton and wool often do, which can lead to blisters and other foot problems.

Sports bras

A good sports bra is essential to provide support and minimize excessive movement. The bra should be a blend of cotton and a “breathable” material such as Lycra mesh to help sweat evaporate and keep odor in check.

Try on different bras until you find the one that provides the most support and comfort. Try jumping up and down or running on the spot as you try different bras on to measure their support. The bra you choose should fit snugly, offering support but not constricting your range of motion.

Ad yes, make sure the straps don’t dig into your shoulders or the band into your rib cage. It should fit snugly, but you should be able to breathe comfortably.

Personal stereo and carrying case

Bringing a personal stereo with some of your favorite music choices is a great way to motivate yourself at the gym. High-energy music – or whatever your preference may be – is a great way to hype up your cardio workout and get you going.

An armband or waist-belt carrying case (sold at many department stores or specialty workout shops) is an ideal way to carry your phone or personal stereo.


Remember to bring a shower towel, bath sponge, shampoo, conditioner, and soap to freshen up after your workout.

Hair ties or clips

If you have long hair or bangs that fall into your face, don’t forget to bring hair elastics or clips to pin your hair back. Nothing is more annoying than trying to exercise when your hair keeps falling in your face.


Towels are both a comfort measure and a necessity. You’ll be glad to have one with you after you’ve worked up a sweat.


Keep your feet clean and prevent athlete’s foot by wearing your flip-flops in the shower.

Water bottle

It’s important to keep hydrated throughout the day, and it’s essential during and after your workouts. Get an estimate of how much water you need using our water calculator.

Gym bag

Carry a gym bag that’s big enough to carry everything you need at the gym but small enough to fit in your locker.


Invest in a good lock that you can bring to the gym each time to lock up your valuables.

Weight-training gloves

Keep your hands soft and callus-free by wearing gloves when you’re lifting weights.

Training log

Keep track of your workouts with a training log to keep you motivated by tracking your progress and help you stay focused.

Heart-rate monitor

You can make sure you’re in your fat-burning zone by wearing a heart-rate monitor during your cardio sessions. Use the following formula to calculate 50 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate:

Subtract your age from 220. Multiply the remainder by 0.50 for the lower end of your target zone, and multiply it by 0.70 for the high end of your target zone. You can also easily determine your target heart rate by using our target heart rate calculator


As you become more advanced, you may want to start timing your rest periods in between each set. Depending on your goals, this will ensure you are not resting too long or taking breaks that are too short.

  • Wear clothes that complement your figure.
  • Wear white or gray cotton gym socks.
  • Wear comfortable clothing such as yoga pants and fitted tanks or T-shirts.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been working out in the same getup for years. Baggy t-shirt. Old mesh shorts. Beat up running shoes. You know, an outfit better suited to painting my house rather than going into public.

Just Do It…Inside, away from others.

Recently, I picked up some new workout gear to keep up with my exercise routine. I didn’t think much about it, but bought whatever looked cool, had great reviews, and would be comfortable in the gym.

A funny thing happened. When my clothes fit at the gym, I felt way more confident. I had one of the best workouts of my life that day. That got me thinking. We know that exercise can boost confidence. But we don’t hear much about how confidence can boost your exercise.

Gentleman Within has put together a list of 10 gym essentials for looking good, feeling more confident, and getting the most out of your workout.

Whether you’re a weightlifter, crossfitter, runner, or Richard Simmons jazzercise fanatic, these 10 items will change the way you workout forever.

Getting the right shoes or sneakers might seem easy. As long as your feet are covered, you’re good to go, right? Depending on what your exercise routine looks like, picking the right shoes can make a huge difference.

If you spend time on the treadmill or at the track, you’ll want running shoes. Running sneakers are softer and more flexible in the mid-section while remaining firm on the heel and toe. They’re designed to help take the repetitive pressure off your foot.

Pick the wrong shoes and you’ll start feeling pain in your legs and knees. You may even develop plantar fasciitis, which can take at least 6 months to heal.

If your runs are only a mile or so, we recommend New Balance Roav’s or Adidas Ultra Boost 22 running shoes. These offer a great balance between style and function. They have enough support for casual runners. But if you put in more than 8 miles per week, you’ll want to go to a running store and spend some money on a shoe specifically for your foot.

A study done at Stellenbosch University in South Africa recording the times of ultramarathon runners showed that those wearing compression socks were able to shave 12 minutes off their time.

While most lab research is inconclusive about whether compression socks offer a significant benefit to your performance, the socks have been proven to help with recovery.

Compression socks help bring full circulation to your legs and feet, which significantly reduces swelling. This means that you’ll cut down on the amount of recovery time you need after a long run.

The South African marathon runners with compression socks were ready to start training just three days after their big race. Not the case for the others.

When looking at compression socks, you’ll notice that each pair comes with a range going by the acronym mmHg.

I used to wear cotton shirts for my workouts every day. Cotton is great, but it holds on to all that sweat. You can imagine what 5 sweaty t-shirts sitting in a bin for a week smell like come laundry day. After a few whiffs of that, I started cycling shirts made of moisture-wicking material.

A shirt made with the right fabric won’t hold on to any nasty smells or odors. In fact, you don’t even have to dry them after washing. Just hang them up or put one on right away.

I noticed that exercise shirts tend to fit better as well. Since they’re made with a more athletic crowd in mind, there’s a bit less room around the stomach and waist as in other, run-of-the-mill shirts.

As far as a confidence boost goes, I’ll say that the shirt was the biggest factor in showing off my muscles at the gym. What’s the point of doing all those sweet bicep curls if your arms are hidden under loose, baggy sleeves?

We like the UA Tech short sleeve shirt from Under Armour or Baleaf workout shirt. The Baleaf shirt comes with a bit of reflective material on the sleeves for running at dawn and dusk like a championship boxer.

Under Armour’s shirts have more of a relaxed drape, though still fitted. While the sleeves on Baleaf shirts are slimmer, so they accentuate your arms more than a standard shirt. Even if you don’t have massive guns, you’ll get a bit of an illusory boost.

A few other highly regarded moisture-wicking shirts that Khoi (GW Founder) has experience with are the super stretchy SilkCut Crew Shirt from Tani, Twillory’s Performance Undershirt (use code GENTWITHIN20 for $20 off). And finally an up and coming brand called Ten Thousand has athletic apparel for athletes that look every bit as good as they perform.

Performance shorts can help a surprising amount in the gym. This became clear when I had to interrupt my jump rope session six times to pull up my basketball shorts.

As with the moisture-wicking shirts, having a breathable lightweight fabric on your legs is a good idea. Especially if you have butt-sweat. This may be TMI for all you readers out there, but I suffer from butt-sweat (when I work out, not really any other times). I had to stay with darker color shorts so that no one could see the sheer amount of sweat down there.

Since switching to performance shorts, no problem. I can wear royal blue shorts, red shorts, any shorts. I mean, that wasn’t something on my bucket list, but I have more options now.

For performance/training shorts, GW’s founder, Khoi likes Wolaco’s Spring Short and All Citizens’ Contender Training Shorts. The Spring Short is ultra-lightweight and ideal for long-distance running while the Contender Training Shorts are performance ready with functionality in mind. It’s got a designated phone pocket and a hidden pocket in the inside front that’s super clutch. Khoi says these options are great—particularly All Citizens—checking the boxes for style, comfort and fit.

Additionally the Hylete’s shorts with 4-way stretch and the Neleus 3-Pack shorts are worth checking out as well. I like getting the 3 pack because I can’t rewear without washing due to the aforementioned condition regarding butt-sweat. And another fantastic lightweight option is QALO’s Primitive Training Shorts.

The way Neleus has done the drawstring is nice and the two strings allow you to get a snug fit so they stay hiked whether you’re doing box jumps or squats. Finally, Ten Thousand offers a tactical short that’s worth a look too.

Compression shorts — they’re shorts for under your shorts! Just like with compression socks, a pair of these will keep your blood flowing through your legs and will help with recovery.

Runners, bicyclists, and powerlifters all reported feeling a sense of increased exertion when wearing compression shorts during training. This means that they felt they were moving more weight with less effort. The perceived ability to do more actually transformed into better performance.

If you’re doing any sort of contact sports like boxing or martial arts, compression shorts are a must. They’ll help secure a cup so you won’t have to worry about any accidental cheap shots.

Made with moisture-wicking fabrics, compression shorts also help prevent chafing, which can be a massive problem for long-distance runners.

Gloves are helpful in a handful of situations (no pun intende). I’ve seen some guys tear their hands up when doing heavy deadlifts.

For the most part, I don’t mind the callouses I get from working out. Guys’ hands shouldn’t be perfect. There’s charm in a little roughness. But if you’ve seen some of the gnarly blood blisters that heavy powerlifters get, you may be interested in a pair of workout gloves for those heavy days.

These Atercel workout gloves fully protect your palms and the base of your fingers. They also provide support for your wrists. Pullups and chinups can be tough on the wrists, so a pair of these #1 best-sellers on Amazon works double duty.

And for runners, you might find yourself out during some chilly mornings and frosty nights. In that case, you’ll want a pair of gloves to keep your hands warm. But some people prefer not to wear gloves at all because they can’t check their phone or use a touch screen.

Nothing shuts a workout down like sweat in the eyes. It stings. That’s where the humble headband comes in.

If you’re a heavy sweater, a headband is a must. Chasing the sweat away from your eyes is too distracting and can move your focus off the task at hand. Plus, it can be dangerous. If you’re carrying a lot of weight, you can’t afford to have a drop of sweat roll into your eye.

Headbands can help keep hair out of your face if you have longer hair, and they can keep your brow clear of stinging drops of sweat.

We like the French Fitness Revolution 6 pack. There are plenty of fancy headband technologies like “sweat channeling”, but I’ve found that a simple headband works well enough.

By picking up six, you’re sure to have enough to get through the week and then some.

Next up we added a heavy hitter — the headphones.

A great pair of headphones can help you block out the noise and focus on the task at hand. Haven’t you seen all those NBA players before a game?

For a lot of people, music is a must when working out.

A 2006 study concluded that music helped people run faster and longer on a treadmill. It not only relieved boredom, but helped participants get into a groove when running.

If that’s not a reason to bring a pair of earbuds, I don’t know what is.

We like the over-ear Treblab Z2’s for their wireless capabilities. You never have to worry about pulling the cord and ripping your headphones off in the middle of a rep.

For earbuds, we like the AirPods for Apple users, the Galaxy Buds Pro for Android users, and the Senso Bluetooth earbuds. They’re more secure than headphones and are a good fit if your workout has a lot of cardio or cross training elements in it.

For outdoor runners, bone-conduction headsets are a must.

There’s nothing worse than BO at the gym. You know the guy who’s leaving a trail of body odor that’s repulsive as it is humorous leaving everyone shaking their head in disapproval and laughter.

A simple solution is to pack a performance body spray for all your trips to the gym. You can spray a little before getting to the gym or in the locker room on your body and underarms (don’t overdo it here) to emanate a fresh scent during your workout. It’s especially advantageous for after your workout if you’re in pinch and don’t have time to freshen up with a shower.

To round out our list, we’ve included an everyday essential, the water bottle. Not only is staying hydrated paramount when it comes to your health and well-being, it’s also important to stay up on your h30 intake at the gym to ensure optimal performance.

Many gym goers often forget to bring their own water bottle and have to make countless trips to the water fountain, and while we’ve got nothing against water coolers and the like, it’s always better to have your own water readily available.

As for our recommendations — though plastic water bottles are certainly convenient, they’re not the most environmentally friendly, don’t hold as much water and lack the functionality of the following recos.

Before you go—although they weren’t on the list of gym essentials—an honorable mention are minimalist fitness trackers.

And so, if you’ve been working out long enough, you’ll notice that you have plateau periods. It’s when you keep putting in the same effort, but you get fewer results.

Gym style can be like that, too. We don’t think about what we wear to the gym all that often, and it’s easy to get into a rut. Try out a few of these 10 workout boosting clothing items and tell us what difference you notice.

Fitness instructor on how to dress and what to take to the gym

Going to the gym for the first time and don’t know how to dress and what to take with you? The fitness instructor made a list of the right things so as not to be the black sheep among experienced jocks.

Fitness instructor with fifteen years of experience Irina Kaminskaya believes that not only the right technique and good equipment is the key to successful training. Clothes and shoes can also help in sports victories.


Irina advises to choose clothes made of breathable and quick-drying materials: “For example, pay attention to meryl, or clothing that combines cotton and elastane. Now in the sportswear market you can easily find comfortable beautiful models from the “right” materials.”

During the cold season, sportswear should be multi-layered. When a person first came to the gym, his muscles are cold, and in order to avoid injuries, you need to do it only after warming up well – if you are warmly dressed, this can be done faster. When you feel that your muscles have warmed up, you can remove the bike. And in the summer, layering is not needed – you should be comfortable in your sports uniform.

We ask Irina where it is better to buy clothes – in the market or in a branded store? The girl says that the main thing is convenience: “If you choose the right material from which your shorts or pants are sewn, then you can train in clothes from the market. True, with frequent washing, such clothes will deform and you will not be able to wear them for a long time: they are usually not wear-resistant. But the clothes for the hall pass those other strength tests. Sometimes T-shirts bought in a non-specialized store, after a couple of workouts and the first wash, have to be transferred to the category of home clothes – because of the unpresentable appearance.


1. Avoid clothes with studs, laces and other small details – they can interfere with you. It is better to unfasten the hoods or choose clothes without them – they can catch on the simulator.

2. Choose pants that are the right length so that they don’t snag on bars or bars.

3. Do not wear shorts with loose legs: you will have to do a series of exercises while lying on your back – you may find yourself showing the audience more than you would like.

4. Do not wear T-shirts made of “glass” materials – they are poorly breathable and do not absorb sweat.

5. Girls sometimes wear pantyhose under shorts to hide uneven skin. You don’t have to do that in the gym.

6. Remember: barefoot or bare-chested you will not be allowed into the hall!


Gym shoes should be closed and have a hard sole – stability is important when exercising with weight. “Men sometimes sin by coming to the hall in shales,” Irina says sternly. “It is strictly forbidden to do this: and if a weight falls on your foot, who will be to blame then?”

“Running on the bike path or exercising on the step without the right shoes is generally prohibited for safety reasons,” says Irina. “Another consequence of exercising in the wrong shoes is the incorrect position of the spine when exercising.”


A small list of things you need in the gym:

  1. 1. Towel (you can wipe off sweat during your workout) and shower accessories.

2. Water bottle. You can take a special “sports” bottle – it is convenient to use and carry with you. But you need to drink in moderation: a large amount of water negatively affects the internal organs. It is also impossible not to drink during a workout – your body is waiting for dehydration and lethargy.

3. Gym gloves. Minimize hand slip and avoid blisters.

4. Heart rate monitor. Useful to monitor your condition and the quality of exercise during training.

5. Protein shakes. They are generally recommended to be consumed 40-60 minutes after exercise. If the path from the hall to the house is not close, then you can take a cocktail with you to make up for the loss of nutrients in the body in time. But better, of course, consult with your coach.

6. Sports bag – roomy and comfortable.

Irina says that many people take the player to the hall, but does not advise beginners to use headphones. “Often novice athletes do not know how to properly perform exercises, so it is especially important for them to focus on technique, breathing and proper body position, and not on music. She will only distract. In addition, with the player you will not be able to hear the advice and recommendations of the coach.
