Содержание

Understanding Yasmin and Its Generic Equivalents

Yasmin is a popular brand-name birth control pill that contains a combination of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. As with many prescription medications, generic versions of Yasmin have become available over time. These generic alternatives offer the same active ingredients and effectiveness as the brand-name drug, often at a lower cost.

What is Yasmin?

Yasmin is an oral contraceptive approved by the FDA on May 11, 2001. It is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare and contains 3mg of drospirenone and 0.03mg of ethinyl estradiol. This combination of hormones works to prevent pregnancy by suppressing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and altering the uterine lining.

Are generic versions of Yasmin available?

Yes, several generic versions of Yasmin have been approved by the FDA. These generics contain the same active ingredients (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) in the same strengths as the brand-name drug. The first generic version of Yasmin was approved on May 9, 2008, manufactured by Barr Pharmaceuticals.

FDA-Approved Generic Alternatives to Yasmin

Since 2008, multiple pharmaceutical companies have received FDA approval to manufacture generic versions of Yasmin. Here’s a comprehensive list of these approved generic alternatives:

  • Barr Pharmaceuticals – Approved May 9, 2008
  • Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories – Approved September 7, 2010
  • Xiromed (brand name: Syeda) – Approved March 28, 2011
  • Lupin Ltd – Approved December 18, 2012
  • Novast Labs (brand name: Yaela) – Approved November 19, 2014
  • Mylan Labs Ltd – Approved May 4, 2015
  • Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd – Approved March 25, 2016
  • Naari Pte Ltd – Approved November 22, 2016
  • Aurobindo Pharma Ltd (brand name: Zumandimine) – Approved March 26, 2018
  • Hetero Labs – Approved January 24, 2020

All of these generic versions are considered bioequivalent to Yasmin, meaning they have the same effectiveness and safety profile as the brand-name drug.

Comparing Brand-Name Yasmin to Generic Alternatives

When considering whether to use brand-name Yasmin or a generic alternative, it’s important to understand the similarities and differences between these options.

Are generic versions of Yasmin as effective as the brand-name drug?

Yes, generic versions of Yasmin are equally effective as the brand-name drug. The FDA requires generic medications to have the same active ingredients, strength, dosage form, and route of administration as the brand-name drug. Generic manufacturers must also demonstrate that their product is bioequivalent to the brand-name drug, meaning it produces the same blood levels of the active ingredients.

Do generic versions of Yasmin have the same side effects?

Generally, yes. Since generic versions contain the same active ingredients as Yasmin, they are expected to have a similar side effect profile. Common side effects may include nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, and changes in menstrual bleeding patterns. However, as with any medication, individual experiences may vary.

Cost Considerations: Brand-Name Yasmin vs. Generic Alternatives

One of the primary advantages of generic medications is their lower cost compared to brand-name drugs. This cost difference can be significant, especially for long-term use of birth control pills.

How much cheaper are generic versions of Yasmin?

While exact prices can vary depending on location, insurance coverage, and pharmacy, generic versions of Yasmin are typically 20-80% less expensive than the brand-name drug. This cost savings can make birth control more accessible for many women, particularly those without comprehensive insurance coverage.

Safety Considerations When Purchasing Generic Birth Control

While generic versions of Yasmin approved by the FDA are safe and effective, it’s crucial to be cautious when purchasing medications online or from unfamiliar sources.

How can consumers ensure they’re getting genuine generic Yasmin?

To ensure you’re receiving a legitimate generic version of Yasmin, always purchase from a reputable pharmacy. Be wary of online pharmacies offering unusually low prices or not requiring a prescription, as these may be selling counterfeit or substandard products. If you’re unsure about the legitimacy of a pharmacy or medication, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Choosing Between Brand-Name Yasmin and Generic Alternatives

When deciding between brand-name Yasmin and its generic alternatives, several factors should be considered.

What factors should be considered when choosing between Yasmin and its generic versions?

Key considerations include:

  • Cost: Generic versions are typically less expensive.
  • Insurance coverage: Some insurance plans may cover only generic versions or have different copays for brand-name and generic drugs.
  • Personal preference: Some women may prefer the familiarity of a brand name, while others are comfortable with generics.
  • Availability: Not all pharmacies may stock every generic version.
  • Individual response: While rare, some women may respond differently to generic versions compared to the brand-name drug.

Ultimately, the decision should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, taking into account individual health needs, preferences, and financial considerations.

The Future of Birth Control: Beyond Yasmin and Its Generics

While Yasmin and its generic equivalents remain popular choices for birth control, ongoing research and development in contraceptive technology continue to expand options for women.

What new developments are occurring in birth control technology?

Recent advancements in birth control include:

  • Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) such as improved IUDs and implants
  • Non-hormonal birth control methods
  • Male contraceptive options
  • Personalized birth control based on genetic testing
  • Digital fertility tracking methods

These innovations aim to provide more options, reduce side effects, and improve contraceptive effectiveness for a diverse range of users.

Navigating Birth Control Choices: The Role of Healthcare Providers

With numerous birth control options available, including Yasmin, its generic alternatives, and other contraceptive methods, the guidance of healthcare providers is crucial in making informed decisions.

How can healthcare providers assist in choosing the right birth control method?

Healthcare providers play a vital role by:

  • Assessing individual health history and risk factors
  • Discussing lifestyle factors and personal preferences
  • Explaining the pros and cons of different contraceptive methods
  • Addressing concerns about side effects and effectiveness
  • Providing ongoing support and adjusting methods as needed

Regular consultations with healthcare providers ensure that women can make informed decisions about their reproductive health and adjust their birth control methods as their needs change over time.

In conclusion, the availability of generic alternatives to Yasmin provides women with more affordable options for hormonal birth control without compromising on effectiveness. While these generics offer significant cost savings, it’s essential to obtain them from reputable sources and consult with healthcare providers to ensure they’re the right choice for individual needs. As contraceptive technology continues to advance, women have an expanding array of options to choose from, making personalized birth control more accessible than ever.

Glossary
TermDefinition
Drug PatentA drug patent is assigned by the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office and assigns exclusive legal right to the patent holder to protect the proprietary chemical formulation. The patent assigns exclusive legal right to the inventor or patent holder, and may include entities such as the drug brand name, trademark, product dosage form, ingredient formulation, or manufacturing process A patent usually expires 20 years from the date of filing, but can be variable based on many factors, including development of new formulations of the original chemical, and patent infringement litigation.
Drug ExclusivityExclusivity is the sole marketing rights granted by the FDA to a manufacturer upon the approval of a drug and may run simultaneously with a patent. Exclusivity periods can run from 180 days to seven years depending upon the circumstance of the exclusivity grant.
RLDA Reference Listed Drug (RLD) is an approved drug product to which new generic versions are compared to show that they are bioequivalent. A drug company seeking approval to market a generic equivalent must refer to the Reference Listed Drug in its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA). By designating a single reference listed drug as the standard to which all generic versions must be shown to be bioequivalent, FDA hopes to avoid possible significant variations among generic drugs and their brand name counterpart.
ABProducts meeting necessary bioequivalence requirements. Multisource drug products listed under the same heading (e.g. identical active ingredients, dosage form, and routes of administration) and having the same strength (see Therapeutic Equivalence-Related Terms, Pharmaceutical Equivalents) generally will be coded AB if a study is submitted demonstrating bioequivalence. In certain instances, a number is added to the end of the AB code to make a three character code (e.g. AB1, AB2, AB7). Three-character codes are assigned only in situations when more than one reference listed drug of the same strength has been designated under the same heading. Two or more reference listed drugs are generally selected only when there are at least two potential reference drug products which are not bioequivalent to each other. If a study is submitted that demonstrates bioequivalence to a specific listed drug product, the generic product will be given the same three-character code as the reference listed drug it was compared against.

Results of pharmacoeconomic studies on drugs Jess and Yarin

All articles

08/18/2021

Premenstrual disorders are widespread among women all over the world. These violations significantly reduce the quality of life, social activity, as well as the efficiency of women’s work. The most severe are premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorders (PMDD).

Therapy of these disorders is extremely important. The results of the study [1] indicate that patients with moderate to severe manifestations of PMS/PMDD during one menstrual cycle cannot perform 8 hours more (1 working day) than patients with mild manifestations of PMS/PMDD or without PMS/PMDD. Also, according to the complication severity questionnaire, in the group of patients with moderate and severe manifestations of PMS/PMDD, the state of reduced working capacity and social activity (observation – 2 months) lasted 4. 5 days longer than in the group of patients without PMS/PMDD or with mild degree (5.6 days versus 1.1 days). The findings of this study are supported by data from the IMPACT and Extension studies.

Comparative treatment efficacy studies PMS / PMDD between Yasmin 9 0014 and competitors

Another indication for prescribing drospirenone-containing drugs is contraception. According to the results of modern research, all oral contraceptives have comparable efficacy and safety profiles. Therefore, the standard design of a pharmacoeconomic study in this case will not be informative. To take into account the overall complex of positive effects of drospirenone-containing contraceptives, a joint analysis was carried out [3]. Parameters assessed included dosage tolerance, weight gain, effects on skin and hair, effects on premenstrual syndromes, menstrual bleeding, and drug cost. An overall utility index of the studied alternatives was derived (Yasmin, EE 30 + DSG 150, EE 20 + DSG 150). As a result of the survey, it was found that Yasmin has an advantage over comparators in all additional parameters (in terms of tolerability, as well as indicators of weight gain, effects on the skin and hair, premenstrual syndromes and menstrual bleeding). The analysis showed that in order to receive an additional unit of benefit when using Yasmin, it is necessary to spend an additional 19€2 compared to EE 30 + DSG 150 and €104.82 compared to EE 20 + DSG 150. The study was conducted in Portugal.

To assess the budgetary impact of Yasmin in terms of unwanted pregnancies avoided, a pharmacoeconomic study was conducted in Scotland. In a simulation with a time horizon of 6 years, Yasmin prevented an additional 995 unwanted pregnancies compared to other non-oral contraceptive methods. The cost of preventing one additional unwanted pregnancy was £72.

The results of pharmacoeconomic studies show that the use of Yasmin provides both a wide range of contraceptive and non-contraceptive positive effects and is economically justified.

Why I decided to grow only Yasmin squash. Advantages and disadvantages of a hybrid. Photo – Botanichka

Every year I plant several new varieties of zucchini and a few favorite and proven ones that will never let you down. Among the constants, the yellow-fruited zucchini “Yasmin” occupies a special place. This year, comparing it with other varieties, I came to the conclusion that they are not looking for good from good, and decided to plant only it. I will tell about the reasons for my choice in this article.

Why I decided to grow only Yasmin zucchini. © Lyudmila Svetlitskaya

Yasmin squash — features of the hybrid

Yasmin squash ( Yasmin F1 ) belongs to the species some other types of pumpkin and squash. Usually zucchini are dark or light green in color, and this zucchini stands out with a bright yellow skin. The fruits are smooth, shiny, cylindrical in shape, average length 25 cm, weight 200-400 g, diameter 4-5 cm. The pulp is tender, dense, juicy, very tasty, cream-colored, medium-sized seeds. Productivity is high – up to 12 kg per 1 m².

The fruiting period is long, the fruits are rich in carotene. The hybrid is characterized by increased resistance to diseases, in particular to watermelon mosaic viruses and zucchini yellow mosaic viruses. “Yasmine” is a medium-early variety of zucchini. It takes 45-50 days from emergence of seedlings to the start of harvesting. It grows as a compact semi-open bush, which makes it easy to harvest. Planting scheme for zucchini “Yasmin” 70x100x100 cm. Designed for fresh consumption and processing.

The Yasmin hybrid was created by the Sakata Seed Corporation (breeding and seed company), which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013. The hybrids created by the company’s specialists are distinguished not only by the successful color and shape of the fruit, taste and yield, but also by high resistance to diseases, especially viral ones.

Health Benefits of Yasmin Zucchini

One medium yellow zucchini contains 39 calories, 2 g protein, 0 g fat, 8 g carbohydrates and 4 g sugar. In addition, it has a sufficient amount of calcium and vitamin C (one glass of chopped zucchini contains about 19 mg). It also contains a lot of vitamin B, beta-carotene and lutein. Beta-carotene, the main source of vitamin A (approximately 135 micrograms of beta-carotene in 240 g of squash), gives the zucchini a bright yellow tint. It is also a carotenoid that acts as an antioxidant and protects the body from free radicals, may slow down cognitive decline, and supports the health of the immune system, mucous membranes, hair, and skin.

Yellow squash is also rich in fibre, magnesium, potassium, iron and folic acid. A cup of sliced yellow squash (240 mg) contains approximately 0.5 mg of iron and 35 mg of folic acid.

This is a low carbohydrate product. You can eat a whole medium sized yellow squash for only 39 calories and 8 grams of carbs, which is not much. A cup of sliced yellow squash contains 2,400 mcg of lutein. This substance may help prevent the development of cataracts and age-related eye diseases. Lutein has also been found to brighten the skin and improve skin health.

Zucchini fruits contain a large amount of water, thanks to which a person feels full longer. It is one of the low glycemic foods suitable for diabetics. It also contains absolutely no cholesterol.

Taste qualities of Yasmin zucchini

First of all, Yasmin zucchini attracted my attention with its bright cheerful color. Golden yellow fruits not only decorate the garden, but also look very appetizing. When the fruits ripened, I realized that they were not only beautiful, but also tasty. The flesh of this zucchini is sweet and tender. Due to the fact that it does not have greenish flesh, like many zucchini, but yellowish-beige, it looks even tastier.

Everyone with whom I shared the fruits of this zucchini noted its great taste and asked for the name of the variety. Young zucchini can be eaten even raw, because they do not have that very unpleasant characteristic aftertaste. However, it should be noted that the smaller the zucchini, the sweeter it will taste, but in adult fruits, the taste still appears, while when the fruit is fully ripe, it almost disappears again. From raw young greens, due to the delicate taste, I really like to cook a spicy salad like a Korean carrot.

Another advantage is that Yasmin marrows keep very well. Of course, when overripe, like most zucchini, Yasmin greatly increases in size, turning into a barrel. However, I never throw out overripe Yasmin zucchini, because in fact they turn into a winter pumpkin. I suppose that the yellow-fruited zucchini has a yellow color for a reason, but is a little closer to the traditional pumpkin. According to my observation, its shelf life is higher than that of white-fruited ones.

The only condition under which it can last until the New Year is to collect the fruits fully ripe with hard dry stalks. Of course, such a zucchini will have a very tough skin and a large seed chamber with hard seeds. Nevertheless, under the skin it has a decent layer (3 cm) of very tasty pulp. In the Yasmin squash, the pulp does not become unpleasantly granular or fibrous during storage, it is very elastic to the touch and the sugar content increases in it.

Thanks to the Yasmin harvest, I don’t buy zucchini in autumn and the first half of winter. Interestingly, during storage, the zucchini really seems to turn into a pumpkin, because its flesh turns orange and, probably, the content of carotene increases in it. At the same time, a mature zucchini does not have a characteristic pumpkin flavor, and you can cook all the same dishes from it as from fresh zucchini (they even become only tastier due to their rich taste).

Cultivation features

In my garden, the Yasmin squash was a real decoration, it could be seen from afar. I have been growing a hybrid for more than a season. In this zucchini, under any weather conditions, homogeneous, very powerful bushes with a diameter of 1.5 meters grow from year to year. At the same time, zucchini of other varieties growing nearby under the same conditions could produce frail bushes with a mediocre harvest, while Yasmin is hung with fruits from year to year. This is a truly productive hybrid.

In addition, it has large and very beautiful strongly carved leaves with a silvery pattern. Some inexperienced gardeners take such a pattern on the leaves of individual pumpkin crops for a disease. But in fact, this is a mechanism invented by nature itself, which helps the plant to cool during extreme heat. And to me, such patterned sheets seem like a real work of art.

For several years of cultivation, I did not observe any pests or diseases in the Yasmin squash. Of course, some of his ovaries rotted and fell off, but such a phenomenon, in principle, is typical for Pumpkin and is not always a pathology. At the same time, at the Yasmin zucchini, I observed rotten fruitlets in much smaller quantities than others.

Thus, I decided to stop all experiments with other varieties of squash, which only take up space in the garden. It is better to plant the minimum number of Yasmin bushes, which will bring the maximum guaranteed harvest. At the same time, they completely satisfy me both fresh, and thermally processed, and canned.

In terms of agricultural technology, it is no different from other marrows, that is, it is an absolutely unpretentious culture. I sow seeds in the ground in mid-May, the germination rate of this hybrid is always very high.

Read also our article 10 varieties and hybrids of zucchini that are not afraid of diseases and vagaries of the weather.

Of course, no culture can be completely perfect, and you can find some disadvantages with Yasmin squash.

Zucchini “Yasmin” is marked F1, that is, it is a hybrid, not a variety, which means that you will not be able to collect your seeds from it. At the same time, a bag of seeds is not very cheap, they are quickly dismantled, and can not always be found on sale. And yet, due to the high yield, many bushes do not need to be grown, and you can afford to buy 1-2 packs of seeds annually, because it always pays off.

There are some varieties of marrow that grow very slowly. I haven’t grown them myself, so it’s hard to compare. But, in any case, “Yasmin” does not belong to those and can turn into a barrel “in front of our eyes.” You need to harvest regularly, which is not very suitable for summer residents of the “weekend”.

Zucchini “Yasmin” has very large bushes, although the variety description says that it is compact. This concept is very relative.
