Splash Your Eyes with Cold Water

Or wrap ice cubes in a clean cotton towel to place them on your eyes for relief.

Use Frozen Foods

If you don’t have access to ice cubes, using frozen food items wrapped in a clean piece of cloth will do the trick as well.

Apply Slices of Cucumbers

Soak the cucumber slices in ice cold water for about 10 minutes and then put them on your closed eyelids to heal any soreness or irritation of your eyes.

Using Rose Water

Dip a piece of clean cotton in rose water and then gently caress the cotton over your closed eyelids. You can even use a few drops of rose water in your eyes.

Crying

  • Salt water

    It’s amazing how many easy remedies there are to relieve puffy eyes around the home. Salt water helps get rid of the water retention in your eye bags, similar to osmosis. Mix 1/2 a teaspoon of salt in 4 cups of lukewarm water, then soak some cotton pads in the saline water. Place these cotton pads over your eyes for a few minutes. Repeat the process for 20 minutes.

  • Ice cold water

    Isn’t this what we always use to soothe our bruises and swelling? Since cold water helps to constrict blood vessels, it can reduce the swelling around your eyes as well. Rinse your face with a few splashes of ice cold water, or wrap an ice cube in a cloth and place it over your eyes for a few minutes. Do this throughout the day if needed.

  • Drink lots of water

    Yes, it’s as simple as that. The swelling of your under-eye area is caused by water retention due to a lack of hydration in your body. To stay well-hydrated, make sure you drink enough water throughout the day. A good gauge would be to check the colour of your urine – if it’s clear or light yellow and odorless, you’re good. The darker and more pungent your urine is, the more dehydrated you probably are.

  • Cold spoons

    Another simple remedy is to hold the rounded portion of a chilled spoon against your eye until it turns warm. This will help tighten the skin around your eye and relax the blood vessels in that area, soothing your puffy eye. Just place a few spoons in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to chill them before use.

  • Tea bags

    Green tea bags or black tea bags are most effective in helping to soothe puffy eyes. After brewing your tea in the morning, place the used tea bags in the refrigerator for around 30 minutes to cool them down. Place the chilled tea bags over your eyes for 15 minutes and repeat twice throughout the day until you are satisfied with the results.

  • Cucumber slices

    Cucumbers contain enzymes that help reduce inflammation and tighten the skin around the eye. Simply place a chilled cucumber slice over your eye until warm, and repeat the process a few times throughout the day. Great for home facials as well!

  • Potatoes

    Like cucumbers, potatoes contain anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe an irritated or swollen eye. All you have to do is to peel, wash and dry a potato, then grate it and place the shavings in a clean cloth. Tie up the cloth and place it over your eyes for several minutes. Repeat until you see results.

  • Strawberries

    Strawberries contain alpha hydroxy acid that makes skin look youthful, while reducing swelling and puffiness. Just place some strawberries in the refrigerator to chill them for 30 minutes, then cut them into thick slices and place them over your eyes for several minutes.

  • Egg White

    Take one egg, separate the yolk and the white, then whip up the white until stiff. Brush the solution over your under-eye area and leave on for five minutes. Wash off with cold water. The egg white will help to tighten your skin, and in turn make your skin look less puffy.

6 Options for Treating Allergy Eyes

In our previous post, we explored the symptoms of seasonal allergies that affect the eyes—what we call allergic conjunctivitis. These include itchy, watery, swollen red and irritated eyes. If you’ve had them, you know how annoying and uncomfortable the condition can be.

Let’s explore 6 options for treating this seasonal condition:

  1. Over-the-Counter Allergy Eye Drops

There are a variety of over-the-counter allergy eye drops on the market that you can buy to find relief from red, swollen, or itchy allergy eyes. Many of these eye drops have antihistamines or block your body’s mast cells to help reduce your body’s allergic reaction. In addition, preservative-free artificial tear eye drops can help to soothe the discomfort of allergic conjunctivitis. Here’s a tip: For an added cooling effect on warm Spring days, store your eye drops in the refrigerator before use.

  1. Prescription Eye Drops

Depending on your level of irritation, over-the-counter products may not provide sufficient relief from your symptoms. If that’s the case, discuss prescription eye drop options with your optometrist. While similar in function to many over-the-counter products, prescription eye drops are often more powerful and therefore more effective in providing relief. Prescription drops may include steroids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications to relieve your irritating symptoms.

  1. Apply a Cold Compress

Changing the temperature of your eye area may give you relief from allergic conjunctivitis. The same oral antihistamines that relieve runny noses and sneezing may also minimize your allergic conjunctivitis symptoms. You may need to start taking them up to a month before allergy season to maximize effectiveness. Allergy medications can have another effect, however: In some cases, antihistamines can result in symptoms of dry eye. Antihistamines can result in drowsiness.

In addition to the treatments recommended above, here are a few additional tips that might help minimize our allergic reaction this season:

  1. Avoid allergens

Allergic to your neighbor’s cat or dog? Avoid petting him, and when you do come in contact with him, wash your hands thoroughly afterward. If pollen is your kryptonite, choose inside activities on high pollen days. If you do go outside, wear wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes from being exposed. When you come inside, change your clothes and wash your face or take a shower to minimize your pollen allergen exposure. Here’s why: tiny pollen particles attach themselves to your skin and hair. If you get in bed with pollen on your body, and it transfers to your pillow, you’ll constantly re-expose yourself all night long!

  1. What about Contact Lenses?

Since allergens (including pollen) often stick to a contact lens’s surface, it’s a best practice to minimize exposure in the eyes. There are two options:

  1. Try one-day or “daily” contact lenses. One-day contact lenses are a smart solution because you get that “fresh pair” feeling every day. While it’s challenging to remove pollen from the surface of a weekly or monthly contact lens, putting a fresh, new pair into your eyes each day assures you that there isn’t pollen or other allergens on them.
  2. Take a brief contact lens vacation. If your eyes are severely affected by allergies, take a break from contact lenses. Wear your glasses for a few weeks until the pollen storm is over. 7 reasons why you wake up with puffy eyes in the morning

1. Too much salt

The first thing that could be responsible for your early-morning puffy eyes is too much salt. When your diet contains too much sodium, your body is more likely to retain fluids. That’s because there’s a delicate balance between sodium and potassium in the cells; when too much sodium enters the cells, water follows in order to dilute it, and this can often lead to bloating and cells becoming full of excess water.

If your puffy eyes are a result of fluid retention and too much salt in your diet, they’ll tend to be worse in the morning. That’s because you don’t drink water overnight while you’re sleeping, so your body can become very dehydrated by morning.

Cut back on your salt intake and try seasoning your food with herbs and spices instead. Your salt receptors can become overwhelmed if you regularly eat too much salt; by cutting back, you’ll start to appreciate smaller doses of salt and other seasonings. My top tip: Watch out for sneaky sources of salt! You might not think you’re consuming too much salt because you don’t put a shaker on the dinner table, but condiments and sauces are notorious for their extra sugar and salt content, so be wary of these.

 

2. Allergies

Another reason you might wake up with puffy eyes: your sleeping habits. You may be suffering from an allergy that’s causing your body to produce histamine, which can cause inflammation, itching and redness in response. So what’s the link to sleep?

If you’re waking up with puffy eyes, you could be allergic to something in your bedroom. If you’ve recently bought new bed sheets, tried a new fabric softener or added an unfamiliar plant to your decor, keep in mind that any of these could be prompting a histamine response and causing your eyes to puff up.

On a similar vein, if you like sleeping with the windows open, pollen and allergens from outside could be the culprit! Try sleeping with the windows closed to see if this helps with your morning symptoms; you can use an electric fan or invest in some lighter bed sheets if you get warm during the night.

Of course, the swollen, sensitive eyes you wake up with may be due to a lack of sleep rather than to external irritants.
If you’re not getting enough sleep at night, or if it isn’t quality sleep, then you might experience an increase in fluid and blood retention around your eyes come morning. This is especially true if your puffy eyes are often accompanied by dark circles or bags under your eyes.

My top tip: If you struggle to get to sleep at night, a healthy sleep routine can make a big difference. Start winding down in the evening at least an hour before you go to bed by putting away your mobile phone or tablet, as the unnatural blue light they emit can disturb your natural sleep cycle. Taking a bath or shower before bed can also help prepare your body for sleep by lowering your temperature and encouraging your body to prepare for sleep.

4. Eye conditions like conjunctivitis

Puffy or swollen eyes can also be caused by certain eye conditions. Conjunctivitis, for example, is normally the result of an infection, but it can also be caused by an allergy or contact lenses. Other symptoms you might notice alongside puffy eyes include itching, redness and sticky discharge.

The most important thing to remember when suffering from conjunctivitis is to keep your eyes clean. Gently washing them with warm water and an eye wash can help to clean the discharge from your eyes. Make sure to wash your hands properly before and after touching your eyes, and always use a clean facecloth and towel. You should also avoid wearing contact lenses or makeup, as they’ll encourage bacteria growth and can slow the healing process.
Infective conjunctivitis can be highly contagious, while the allergic and irritant versions aren’t. Nevertheless, it’s important to always wash your hands before and after touching or cleaning your eyes. Don’t share facecloths or towels to keep your infection from spreading.

5. Sleeping with contact lenses in

6. Drinking too much alcohol

You might find that, after a heavy night of drinking, you always seem to wake up in the morning with puffy eyes. While you probably didn’t get your full eight hours (see lack of sleep above!), it could also be down to dehydration.

In a similar process to when you consume too much salt, when your body becomes dehydrated, it stores as much water as it possibly can and stockpiles it for the future. This can often lead to bloating and fluid retention. As your body swells with excess water, the skin under your eyes can retain fluid, leading to puffy, dark circles.

My top tip: Try raising your head a little higher with an extra pillow at night to encourage excess fluid to drain from around your eyes. And more importantly, you should alternate your pints or cocktails with a nice glass of water. Avoid ordering doubles, which can leave you drinking more alcohol than you originally intended and getting tipsy much quicker than expected, leaving you hung over the next day and contributing to signs of dehydration like puffy eyes.

7. Not drinking enough water

This tip follows from the last, as you can get dehydrated even without touching a drop of alcohol. If you don’t drink water regularly, your body will go through the same motions and stockpile fluids—hello puffy eyes!
It can be especially pronounced in the morning, particularly if it’s been a whole eight hours since you went to bed and even longer since you last had a sip of h30. If you’re concerned about having to pee in the middle of the night, you can stop drinking around an hour before bed.

What’s more, you should avoid drinking tea or coffee in the evening, as they can act as a diuretic and stimulate your bladder to release urine more frequently.

Excreting all of your precious water before bed and spending eight hours in a liquid-free slumber won’t help your morning eye bags!

My top tip: If you struggle to drink enough water during the day, setting a small reminder on your phone or work computer can encourage you to have a glass every hour or so. Rather than investing in an intimidating water bottle, try to drink small amounts often to keep your body hydrated and prevent those nasty puffy eyes!

Eye puffiness and dark circles under the eyes occur for many reasons, including hereditary facial features, allergies, stress, eye fatigue, and individual skin characteristics such as texture.

While some home remedies such as cucumber slices can temporarily relieve puffy eyes, a longer-term solution requires finding out the underlying cause.

What causes puffy eyes?

Common edema around the eyes indicates an excess of accumulated fluid in the surrounding skin tissues. Since the skin around the eyes is the thinnest, swelling and tone changes can be quite noticeable.

But what is the reason for the accumulation of fluid that causes swelling of the eyes?

Swelling of the eyes usually occurs due to various factors, including:

  1. Excessive salt intake that causes fluid retention

  2. Allergies that can cause inflammation and swelling

  3. Sinus problems

  4. Dehydration

  5. Fatigue and lack of sleep

  6. Stress

  7. Sobbing

  8. Aging

  9. Hereditary facial features

Although the last reason does not seem to be puffy, many people do have strength heredity.

As we age, eye swelling may in part be caused by the fatty tissue that normally protects the eye inside the bony orbit begins to push forward and fill the space under the eye.

This is because the aging process causes a thinning of the membrane or “septum” that normally traps fat in both the upper and lower eyelids. As the membrane becomes thinner, the fat bulges forward. It is then that bags or bulges begin to form under the eyes.

What causes puffy eyes in the morning?

When we sleep, we do not blink. And this is one of the reasons why eye swelling develops.

Dark circles can appear under the eyes as a result of stress or lack of sleep.

Blinking for the eyelids is like walking for the feet. If there is no movement, some people develop swelling of the lower extremities, which disappears as soon as they walk, and the muscles in the legs begin to “pull” the accumulated fluid (swelling), releasing it back into the bloodstream.

The same thing happens with the centuries. Closed eyelids that do not blink during sleep can swell in some people who have a tendency to do so. Therefore, in the morning you may wake up with very swollen and puffy eyelids. After you open your eyes and start blinking, the swelling will partially subside in about an hour.

Are puffy eyes a symptom of a medical condition?

When this happens unexpectedly, eye swelling is sometimes indicative of disease.

For example, people with thyroid problems may develop swelling of the tissues and muscles around the eyes.Additionally, bulging eyes can be a symptom of a thyroid disorder known as Graves’ disease.

Eye allergies associated with conditions such as hay fever can also cause swelling of the eyes. Other types of allergies, such as reactions to certain foods or chemicals, can cause eyelid swelling.

During an allergic reaction, some cells in the body release a chemical called histamine, which has many adverse effects on body tissues, including fluid leakage from blood vessels. These fluids become trapped in the surrounding tissues, causing swelling.

Puffy, puffy eyelids and dark circles under the eyes can occur with eye infections such as conjunctivitis In this case, the swelling of the eyes is caused by inflammation associated with an eye infection that directly affects the eyelids. In addition, general swelling and puffiness can cause dry eyes.

Systemic diseases, including kidney failure, also lead to general edema throughout the body, including around the eyes.

What are some treatments for puffy eyes?

To find the best solution for puffy eyes and dark circles, it is important to establish the root cause.

If your mother or father has puffy eyes, you may have inherited this trait from them. In such a case, cosmetic surgery may be considered to reduce the swelling.

Swelling of the eyes caused by aging is also likely to require cosmetic surgery.

You may want to talk with your optometrist or plastic surgeon about some of the options available for dealing with eyelid problems. These options include chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, some prescription skin treatments, and eyelid surgery known as blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty removes excess fatty tissue and skin from the upper and lower eyelids and tightens the skin and muscles to reduce swelling and reduce wrinkles.

The following remedies can temporarily reduce the swelling around the eyes:

  • Use eye drops for irritation caused by allergies, if applicable

  • Drink enough fluids to stay hydrated

  • Cold compresses for swollen eyelids

  • Apply cucumber slices or chilled tea bags to closed eyes

  • Use creams and other products specially formulated for application to the skin around the eyes

  • Reduce dietary salt

  • Consume foods rich in potassium e.g. bananas to eliminate excess fluid in the body

  • Spray cold water on the face and eyes

  • Sleep and rest as much as possible

Creams and ointments used to reduce swelling of the eyelids, ca 100 contain phenylephrine, a drug that constricts blood vessels. It can have a double effect on puffy eyelids.

First, if dark circles are caused by a visible network of blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyelids, then the narrowing of the vessels can reduce the darkening.

Second, narrowing the blood vessels can reduce the likelihood of fluid leaking from the blood vessel, which will reduce swelling.

However, be careful when applying such products around the eyes. If accidentally splashed into the eyes, they can cause a serious inflammatory reaction known as chemical conjunctivitis.If this happens, see your optometrist or doctor immediately.

What are the symptoms of blepharitis?

The inflammatory process can affect only the skin of the eyelids and the area of ​​the eyelashes (anterior blepharitis), and can cover the inner edge of the eyelid in contact with the surface of the eye, including the glands located in the eyelids (posterior blepharitis).

In some cases, blepharitis occurs against the background of chalazion, barley or dry eye syndrome 1 .

These glands, invisible to the eye, are located in the region of the eyelid margin and it is they who secrete a lipid (fatty) secretion, which mixes with the tear fluid and lubricates the surface of the eye.These glands can become inflamed if:

• too thick secretion of the meibomian glands clogs their excretory ducts, as a result of which small white nodules form on the inner edge of the eyelid.

• in case of certain diseases affecting both the skin of the face and the skin of the eyelids, for example, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis – an excess amount of sebum is produced on the face, as well as an excess amount of secretion of the meibomian glands. Pustules can occur on the skin of the face or scalp, as well as in the eyelids.

Treatment

Necessary preventive measures

Relapses are characteristic of blepharitis. Therefore, patients suffering from blepharitis should pay special attention to daily eyelid hygiene to prevent the growth and reproduction of pathogens, as well as to improve the functioning of the meibomian glands.

Regular self-massage will ensure timely cleansing of the meibomian gland ducts, relieve symptoms and prevent inflammation 3 .
