Cellulitis is a type of bacterial infection that can quickly become serious. It affects your skin, causing inflammation, redness, and pain. It’s most common on the lower legs.

Cellulitis is a type of bacterial infection that occur when bacteria enters your body through broken skin. It can affect any part of the body, but it’s most common on the lower legs. This is because the lower legs tend to be most susceptible to scrapes and cuts.

Several types of cuts and injuries can allow cellulitis-causing bacteria into the body, including:

  • surgical incisions
  • burns
  • puncture wounds
  • skin rashes, such as severe eczema
  • animal bites

A cellulitis infection can spread to your bloodstream, which can quickly become life-threatening. This is why it’s best to see a doctor as soon as possible if you think you might have cellulitis.

You shouldn’t try to treat cellulitis at home, but there are a few things you can do on your own as you recover from a cellulitis infection.

Cellulitis tends to progress quickly, so early identification is key. At first, you might just feel some pain and tenderness.

But over the course of a few hours, you may start to notice:

  • skin that’s warm to the touch
  • blistering
  • skin dimpling
  • growing area of redness

You can monitor the progression of your infection by circling the red area with a pen. This will help you see how much it’s spread within a period of time.   • Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve), can help reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Treating any underlying conditions. Treat any underlying conditions, such as athlete’s foot or eczema, that caused the wound that got infected.
  • Taking all your antibiotics. With antibiotic treatment, the symptoms of cellulitis should begin to disappear within 48 hours, but it’s very important to continue taking your antibiotics until all the pills are gone. Otherwise, it may come back, and the second course of antibiotics may not be as effective as the first.

Without antibiotic treatment, cellulitis can spread beyond the skin. It can enter your lymph nodes and spread into your bloodstream. Once it reaches your bloodstream, bacteria can cause quickly cause a life-threatening infection known as blood poisoning.

Without proper treatment, cellulitis can also return. Repeated cellulitis can cause permanent damage to your lymph nodes, which play an important role in your immune system.

In rare cases, severe cellulitis infections can spread into deep layers of tissue. An infection of the fascia, a deep layer of tissue surrounding your muscles and organs, is known as necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating disease. People with necrotizing fasciitis usually need multiple surgeries to remove dead tissue, often entire limbs.

Cellulitis is a serious condition that shouldn’t be treated at home. Within hours, it can escalate into a life-threatening blood infection. Go to your local urgent care clinic or emergency room if you think you have cellulitis. Early antibiotic treatment is key in reducing your risk of serious complications.

  • Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve), can help reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Treating any underlying conditions. Treat any underlying conditions, such as athlete’s foot or eczema, that caused the wound that got infected.
  • Taking all your antibiotics. With antibiotic treatment, the symptoms of cellulitis should begin to disappear within 48 hours, but it’s very important to continue taking your antibiotics until all the pills are gone. Otherwise, it may come back, and the second course of antibiotics may not be as effective as the first.

Without antibiotic treatment, cellulitis can spread beyond the skin. It can enter your lymph nodes and spread into your bloodstream. Once it reaches your bloodstream, bacteria can cause quickly cause a life-threatening infection known as blood poisoning.

Without proper treatment, cellulitis can also return. Repeated cellulitis can cause permanent damage to your lymph nodes, which play an important role in your immune system.

In rare cases, severe cellulitis infections can spread into deep layers of tissue. An infection of the fascia, a deep layer of tissue surrounding your muscles and organs, is known as necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating disease. People with necrotizing fasciitis usually need multiple surgeries to remove dead tissue, often entire limbs.

Cellulitis is a serious condition that shouldn’t be treated at home. Within hours, it can escalate into a life-threatening blood infection. Go to your local urgent care clinic or emergency room if you think you have cellulitis. Early antibiotic treatment is key in reducing your risk of serious complications.

What is cellulite

Cellulite is a skin condition caused by disorders of blood microcirculation and changes in subcutaneous fat. It leads to the development of inflammation and an increase in fat cells – adipocytes, which become larger and form irregularities on the surface of the skin. This is an acute inflammation of the soft tissues, with swelling and tenderness in some areas of the body. At the same time, in everyday life it is customary to call cellulite even small degrees of lipodystrophy – a local lesion of subcutaneous fat, which occurs in 85% of women and is considered an absolutely normal feature that does not affect health [1].

“Getting rid of cellulite or reducing its signs is a very common request for a cosmetologist, because today’s beauty standards still require perfection in everything, including perfect smoothness of the skin on all parts of the body. At the first or second stage, when bumps are visible when the skin is compressed or a certain angle, cellulite is a natural phenomenon. Moreover, it can be classified as necessary. After all, it is normally developed, and not absent, subcutaneous fat that is a sign of the adequate functioning of the hormonal system. But marketers declared unevenness on the body a terrible flaw, almost a disease, and almost all women immediately found it in themselves and began an endless struggle.

In summary: many people are concerned about the aesthetic issue, and they try to get rid of bumps and dimples that resemble orange peel on the skin. These defects are formed when adipose tissue presses on the connective tissue. Modern cosmetologists and nutritionists are often faced with the request to “get rid of cellulite”, so hereinafter we will use this term when talking about lipodystrophy.

What causes cellulite

The defect is often discernible on the thighs, because physiologically there is more adipose tissue in this area. Factors that increase the chances of developing cellulite include the following.

  1. Age. Usually, lipodystrophy actively develops over the years, when the skin loses its elasticity [2].
  2. Hormones. Increased production of estrogen contributes to the active accumulation of fat and increased lipodystrophy. The hormone affects the walls of blood vessels, increasing their permeability, which can lead to tissue edema. There is excessive pressure on small veins and arterioles [3]. The process is exacerbated by a combination of progesterone deficiency and hyperestrogenism, resulting in metabolic disorders, fibrosis and the formation of nodes in the subcutaneous tissue, which inevitably leads to the progression of cellulite [4].
  3. Genetics . It determines the structure of the skin and body type. If in the genus along the female line the hips rarely remained smooth with age, the chances of a similar heredity are higher [5].
  4. Weight changes . There is a stereotype that lipodystrophy appears only in overweight people. In fact, this feature is equally inherent in both full and thin people. At the same time, sharp jumps in weight often lead to an imbalance in the body, due to which the “orange peel” becomes more noticeable. This is an individual process: studies confirm that as a result of losing weight, some of the subjects showed a decrease in lipodystrophy, while others worsened the defect [6].
  5. Features of the body . The development of cellulite is affected by the deterioration of blood circulation, dehydration, loss of collagen, poor lymphatic drainage, local inflammation and thinning of the epidermis. Some of these factors are inevitable in view of age-related changes, but they can be corrected with the help of nutrition, lifestyle and cosmetology.
  6. Bad habits . Alcohol consumption stimulates lipogenesis and causes dehydration of the body, which leads to excessive and improper accumulation of fat. Smoking is the cause of a significant increase in the number of free radicals in the body and narrowing of small blood vessels, which causes local microcirculation disorders. This may contribute to the development of lipodystrophy, leading to clinical progression [7].

There are four stages of cellulite in total [8]:

  • I degree (stage) is considered mild: superficial depressions, similar to an orange peel, are little pronounced or noticeable when the skin is compressed;
  • II degree – medium, moderate: seals are formed, due to fluid pressure, the outflow of lymph worsens, irregularities are visible without additional squeezing;
  • III degree – severe: deep ripples of the skin, more obvious depressions, possibly worsening of blood flow and pinching of nerve endings;
  • IV degree – “micronodular” stage: the skin looks like a sponge, dotted with tubercles and depressions, the muscles weaken due to partial atrophy with poor blood supply.

How to get rid of cellulite: 8 ways

“I propose to abandon the definition of “struggle” and replace it with “withdrawal”. The fight against cellulite is doomed to defeat, because this skin condition is normal for the body and it will replenish it as soon as anti-cellulite procedures are stopped. Here you need systematic and constant skin care, coupled with mandatory physical activity, proper nutrition and drinking regimen. It is necessary to achieve good drainage and increase skin density, hydration and smoothness.

“Start with a general examination of the body to make sure that there are no complications and contraindications to the use of procedures to get rid of cellulite. Check your hormones, consult a nutritionist. After receiving all the necessary information, take a course of vacuum or LPG massage, but remember that everything works only in combination. Establish a nutrition system, go in for health and sports.

Several home and salon treatments have been shown to be effective against cellulite [9].

1. Wraps

To combat lipodystrophy, wraps with herbal ingredients and essential oils are most often used. Specialists offer courses of hot (with pepper or cinnamon) and cold treatments (mint essential oil) that tone and smooth the skin. You can use universal wraps to moisturize and nourish the dermis, for example, with kelp, coffee or honey. Be sure to consult with a specialist before starting the procedures. Some of them, especially hot ones, are contraindicated in cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and varicose veins.

2. Massages

Massage enhances lymphatic drainage, which is good for the appearance of the skin. Massage creams can be specialized, aimed at increasing elasticity and moisturizing the skin, but the main effect is achieved precisely through mechanical action. It is unlikely that you will notice obvious improvements after one massage, but an anti-cellulite course will help to significantly reduce the manifestations of lipodystrophy. Depending on the severity of the defect, you can try different types of procedures: dry brush massage, vacuum, manual anti-cellulite and LPG – a hardware technique based on a combination of vacuum and vibration exposure.

“Massage is the main assistant in the fight against cellulite. The most effective are vacuum, manual and LPG massage in combination with body wraps. Massage with sugar gel also has a pronounced effect, especially if it is accompanied by a warming effect. Include an algae wrap in your program, it will enhance the effect of the massage.

3. Exercises

Cellulite occurs in people regardless of body type. But if you are overweight, the most effective method is to lose those extra pounds and tone your body. Do more cardio and strength exercises. Do not focus only on the legs, thighs and buttocks. Strong muscles under a thinner layer of fat make the skin smoother and less rough.

“Severely pronounced cellulite is not just an accumulation of excess fat, but, as a rule, the result of improper and irregular nutrition, metabolic disorders, hormonal levels and daily routine, an inactive lifestyle, and much more.

The solution of the problem must be approached in a complex manner. The accumulation of adipose tissue and the formation of cellulite disrupt the lymph flow and normal blood supply, the flow of oxygen into these areas is hindered, and the amount of connective tissue begins to increase. Mandatory sports load, which will contribute to the solution of these problems. Physical activity should be competently and individually selected.

Cardio training improves the flow of oxygen into the body and the functioning of the cardiovascular system, which directly affects blood vessels, organs and tissues. Light cardio activity involves the maximum number of muscles. It can be walking, easy running, and the best thing is swimming.

Also, exercises and complexes for the development of indicators of flexibility (aka joint mobility), myofascial relaxation and percussion therapy should be included in the training. They will help improve blood circulation and elasticity of soft tissues, which, in turn, will trigger global reactions throughout the body.

Strength training should target all muscle groups. The biggest mistake is to solve the issue locally, that is, to work out only problem areas. On the contrary, you need to include in the work all the major large muscle groups.

Working only on the lower parts of the body can even worsen the condition, as it increases the stagnant process due to stress. Be sure to work out the issue of nutrition, consult with doctors. Very often, cellulite appears due to health problems that the trainer will not be able to solve.

4. Taping

Kinesio taping – the application of elastic bands to the skin – has been used by doctors for many years in orthopedic, neurological, oncological and postoperative therapy, as well as in pain relief and sports medicine. Recent studies in 2022 confirmed that the use of adhesive elastic medical tape is a promising method for reducing cellulite [10]. Tapes were applied on the lateral surfaces of the thigh, from the hip joint to the knee, and left for 72 hours. After removing the tapes, a clear improvement was recorded.

5. Bioactive collagen peptides

Doctors have found a reduction in cellulite in women who took bioactive collagen peptides [11]. Participants in the experiment used the supplement daily for six months. As a result, improvement was observed in women with both moderate and higher weights. Despite the positive results, more research is needed to confirm the supplement’s role in improving skin condition.

6. Proper nutrition

Errors in the diet, an excess of flour and processed foods lead to deterioration of the skin and slow metabolism. Proper nutrition should be the basis of a healthy lifestyle, which also contributes to the improvement of body quality. In this case, good skin condition is a pleasant side effect of taking care of yourself.

7. Drinking mode

The amount of water per day is individual and depends on the parameters of the body, the state of the cardiovascular system. Proper drinking regime helps the work of all internal organs and systems, including contributing to the normalization of weight and normal metabolism. Drinking a sufficient amount of fluid per day, you will eliminate its retention in the body and the occurrence of edema, which also cause skin irregularities and the appearance of lipodystrophy.

8. Cosmetics

There are many creams, gels, scrubs and cellulite serums on the market. They are best used in combination with the above methods of getting rid of lipodystrophy.

“Cosmetics for home use is an excellent addition to complex and systemic problem solving. It helps to improve the condition of the skin from the outside, making it more elastic and smooth. Anti-cellulite products are aimed at the movement of lymph, stimulate blood circulation and increase collagen production. Regular use of such funds gives a pronounced result in a month.

Keep in mind that any cosmetic modifies and saturates only the upper layers of the skin, so it cannot be a panacea for cellulite.

“Cosmetic products do not penetrate beyond the epidermis, and therefore cannot directly affect the state of subcutaneous fat, which is located much deeper. But they moisturize, which means they improve the quality of the skin. Cosmetics are used for massage, it often has a warming or cooling effect, starts lymphatic drainage, the outflow of fluid from problem areas. During the use of cosmetic products, cellulite grades I and II may become less noticeable.”

The basic rule is regularity. If massages and body wraps can be done in cycles on the recommendation of a specialist, then drinking regimen, nutrition and exercise must become a stable part of life in order to maintain results. Depending on the severity of lipodystrophy, the individual characteristics of the skin and the body as a whole, it will take from several weeks to several months for an obvious decrease in the “orange peel” effect.

“Scrubs, anti-cellulite creams and oils do not reach the subcutaneous fat. Rubbing the body with a dry brush cannot do this either. The maximum they can do is slightly irritate skin receptors and temporarily improve blood flow. But none of these techniques will “burn fat” and “remove cellulite.” Massage is good for the general condition of the skin as an additional remedy. Without a balanced diet, cellulite cannot be removed with one massage. Choose the most comfortable and pleasant sensations for yourself, as well as affordable methods in terms of cost.

“Changes that most women see in their skin after 30 years are called ‘gynoid lipodystrophy’. It has four stages, and only the last one can be officially called cellulite, or purulent inflammation of the subcutaneous fat. It is treated only under the supervision of a doctor. The remaining stages are amenable to adjustment without medical intervention.

The risk of developing lipodystrophy increases in the presence of diseases such as pancreatic dysfunction, renal, venous and lymphatic insufficiency, varicose veins, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovaries.

Most often, orange peel occurs on the thighs, but can also appear in other areas of fat accumulation.

In addition to physiotherapy (massage, LPG-massage, pressure therapy), the use of serums with lipolytics that promote the breakdown of fats, and products to improve blood circulation, it is important to switch to proper nutrition. Give preference to rye flour bread, abandoning the usual long loaf, eat cereal cereals for breakfast (except for semolina and white rice), choose fermented milk products no fatter than 2.5%. Include low-fat varieties of fish and seafood, seasonal vegetables and fruits, herbs, and berries in your diet. It is advisable to minimize carrots, beets and potatoes in the diet.

The fight against “orange peel” will be most effective in eliminating the cause of skin changes, so it is also recommended to visit an endocrinologist, nutritionist, gastroenterologist.

What a pity that we do not live in the Renaissance, when artists literally sang the beauty of “female roundness” and cellulite on the thighs did not bother the beauties at all, but only gave them femininity and attractiveness in the eyes of the opposite sex.

Let’s take Rembrandt’s Danae as an example: she, the owner of “appetizing forms”, can hardly be called thin and fit. Since then, the standards of female beauty and attractiveness have changed dramatically, and today the heroine of the picture would be more likely to run to a fitness club with the words: “I need to lose weight, remove my tummy, “ears” from my hips and get rid of cellulite on my legs. And immediately!

“Orange peel” on the thighs (scientifically – cellulite) – the number one enemy for women who care about the beauty of their bodies. And it is for women, because it occurs under the influence of estrogens – female hormones. Cellulite is a structural change in the subcutaneous layer that leads to impaired lymphatic drainage.

The most common causes of disorders are: unhealthy and unbalanced diet, lack of exercise, hormonal changes, bad habits and stress. Fitness expert Alina Nasyrova tells how to get rid of the nasty “orange peel” on the body, and also shows five techniques for effective self-massage.

1. Make your diet as clean as possible.

Keep track of the calories and BJU (protein-fat-carbohydrate) ratio in your daily diet. Remember: there must be a balance in everything. The optimal ratio of BJU is considered to be 40% proteins, 40% carbohydrates and 20% fats. It is not recommended to drop your daily total calories below 1200 calories.

Pay attention to dairy products – cottage cheese, kefir and milk, as they can cause fluid retention and provoke the development of cellulite.

2. Add physical activity.

We have already told you how to pump up and lose weight without leaving home. Take these exercises into service and perform every day. But remember that by pumping the press, you will not remove fat from the abdomen, moreover, if you pump the press with the wrong technique, the stomach can only increase.

3. Spend enough time on anti-cellulite massage and scrub.

It is not necessary to spend money on anti-cellulite massage, expensive scrubs and body wraps – you can do all this at home and get the same effect (or maybe even better!).

Ingredients: sea salt, ground coffee beans, olive oil.

Thoroughly wash and steam the skin before applying the scrub. Gently, in a circular motion, rub the scrub into areas of the body that require anti-cellulite care. For maximum effect, massage the skin for 10-15 minutes. After the procedure, thoroughly rinse the scrub from the body.

Each movement is performed for 1–2 minutes in the area of ​​the thighs and buttocks.

The preparatory stage is aimed at warming up the tissues. It is performed with relaxed brushes.

When rubbing, the hands should not slide over the skin, but move it.

The massaged muscles should be as relaxed as possible. Move smoothly, slowly, without jerks. Increase the intensity of movements gradually.
