What Is Arm Pain? Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention

For many forms of arm pain, self-care and over-the-counter treatments are enough to effectively resolve the pain.

If you have arm pain from overexertion or a compressed nerve, avoid repetitive movements and take frequent breaks from activities that stress the area.

For arm pain due to overuse or overexertion, remember the acronym RICE:

Rest Take a break from your normal activities.

Ice Place an ice pack or bag of frozen peas on the sore area for 15 to 20 minutes, three times a day.

Compression Use a compression bandage to reduce swelling.

Elevation Elevate your arm above heart level to help reduce swelling.

When to See a Doctor

Seek emergency treatment if your arm, shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain is the result of severe trauma or comes on suddenly. If you have trouble moving your arm or see protruding bones, see your doctor right away, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Sudden arm, shoulder, chest, or back pain, accompanied by pressure in your chest, may signal a heart attack, and you should call 911 and seek emergency treatment immediately. Do not drive yourself to the hospital if you think you are having a heart attack.

See your doctor as soon as possible if you have:

  • Pain that occurs with exertion and is relieved by rest (this may indicate reduced blood flow to your heart)
  • Sudden injury
  • Severe pain and swelling
  • Difficulty moving or rotating your arm

Schedule a regular office visit with your doctor if you have arm pain that isn’t getting better with self-care, or if you have an injury and notice an increase in redness, swelling, or pain.

Medication Options

Common over-the-counter medications to help relieve arm pain include acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

Depending on the source of your arm pain, your doctor may administer drug treatments to help relieve inflammation, such as an injection of corticosteroids.

Your doctor may also prescribe a topical anti-inflammatory drug that you apply to the skin in the area of your pain, notes the Mayo Clinic.

Physical Therapy

Some conditions that cause arm pain, including many chronic tendon conditions, may benefit from physical therapy.

A physical therapist can work with you to identify activities or other factors that may be contributing to your condition, and develop specific exercises to help you strengthen and stretch the affected muscles and tendons.

One category of exercises that often helps with tendon problems is known as eccentric strengthening. This practice involves contracting (squeezing) a muscle at the same time that it’s lengthening.

A physical therapist can also help you regain range of motion and avoid scarring after surgery done to repair a fracture or treat carpal tunnel syndrome, according to the Mayo Clinic.

6 Home Remedies for Shoulder Pain

How to Get Rid of Pain from Pulled Muscle in Shoulder

Shoulder pain can have many causes. There are many ways to try to help.  Shoulder injuries are common from daily activities in everyday life. A pulled muscle in the shoulder can cause shoulder pain. Reaching overhead, lifting a suitcase, and putting on a seatbelt are all activities that may cause discomfort if you have a shoulder injury. If you have pain in your shoulder, here is a list of 6 home remedies you can try.

  1. Anti-inflammatories.
  2. Heat.
  3. Ice.
  4. Salt Bathing.
  5. Stretching.
  6. Massage.

What are Common Causes of Shoulder Pain?

The most common causes of shoulder pain are Rotator Cuff issues. A rotator cuff is a muscle group that helps to hold the ball and socket shoulder joint together.  They also help control the movements in the shoulder. The small rotator cuff muscles can become irritated.  This can produce tendonitis.

Shoulder Pain

What are the 6 Home Remedies for Shoulder Pain?

1. Over the counter Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory medications or NSAIDs. There are two major generic types of NSAIDs: Ibuprofen and Naproxen.

Both used to be by prescription and are relatively safe to use per their labels. Brand names include Advil (for Ibuprofen) and Aleve (for naproxen). Use only if approved by your physician.

2. Apply heat to your shoulder. A mild hot shower can accomplish this on your shoulder for about 5 to 10 minutes.  Often patients have shoulder pain from sleeping.  A good hot shower can certainly help with this pain.  Or you can use an electric hot pack. If using the electric hot pack, set on medium heat, not high heat level.

Research shows us that our bodies respond to medium heat levels better than intense heat levels. Also, microwave pellets or “rice” hot packs work well at home.

Be careful not to apply heat to an acute or recent injury. Check out this article to understand the difference between heat and ice.

A shoulder injury from the workout.

3. Apply ice to your shoulder. A cold pack inside a pillowcase for ten minutes can be significant. Ice massage is also an option. Ice should not be left in direct contact with the skin for over 5 minutes due to the genuine possibility of frostbite.

4. Stretches. Stretching the muscles that encompass the shoulder joint can help with your pain and possibly prevent future injury. Muscles capable of moving freely through your shoulder’s natural motion will not have the constant stress that tight muscle experiences.

5. Salt Bath. This is definitely “old school” but has some recent merit on television with Dr. Oz. Fill a bathtub with warm water and add Epsom salts.

Soak immersed in the tub for 10 to 15 minutes. The salts are soothing to the skin and very relaxing if you are experiencing more cramping pain. You can also add essential oils to the bath as well.

6. Massage. Get a family member to knead your sore muscles.  If you are very independent, find a sock and a tennis ball. Put a tennis ball inside a sock. Place the sock and ball at the back of your shoulder where it is sore. Now, against a wall, apply pressure to the tennis ball, and roll around, thus giving yourself a massage. If that doesn’t prove effective, you can look into visiting a sports massage therapist.

Natural Cures of Inflammation

Natural cures of inflammation include fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, herbs, spices, and nuts.

You can reduce inflammation in your body naturally through your diet. Some foods that naturally reduce inflammation are:

  • Olive Oil
  • Fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and tuna
  • Tomatoes
  • Fruits like blueberries, strawberries, oranges, and cherries
  • Nuts, like walnuts and almonds
  • Green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, and collards
  • Celery juice or beet juice
  • Herbs and spices such as ginger, cayenne, cinnamon, and turmeric

Adding these whole foods to your diet and cutting out processed foods will naturally reduce inflammation in your body. Having a healthy balanced diet of whole foods, fats, carbs, and protein will boost your body’s healing process.

You should limit your alcohol intake, sodas, caffeine in excess of 2 cups per day, and nicotine. Get plenty of rest and ease into an exercise routine that you enjoy.  Healthy habits such as walking, yoga, and Pilates are appropriate for all levels of stamina.

Essential oils can also be used for pain, tension and swelling. Essential oils are derived from therapeutic plants that have natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits. Some of the more common ones include:

  • Peppermint oil
  • Marjoram oil
  • Lavender oil

Shoulder Pain Therapy

Physical Therapy can Help with Shoulder Pain.

If you think your shoulder pain is related to baseball, please read this Baseball Article.

If home remedies do not help, physical therapy is the next option. Therapists concentrate on the flexibility of the shoulder and implement new exercises to improve mobility. There are multiple hands-on techniques to better the mobility of the joints to treat shoulder pain. In some cases, patients will undergo strength training as a way to treat their shoulder pain. Lastly, electrical modalities such as ultrasound, laser, and E-Stim (electric stimulation) may be used to remedy the pain.

Other options to try in coordination with physical therapy are medical massage therapy and acupuncture. You can learn more about medical massage therapy by clicking HERE and about acupuncture HERE.

Causes, home remedies, and prevention

Muscle aches can occur in adults and children. In many cases, sore and aching muscles are nothing to worry about and will resolve without medical treatment. However, muscle aches can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying illness.

Common causes of muscle aches include:

  • overexertion
  • trauma to an area of the body
  • viral infections

Muscle aches, also known as myalgia, can be felt in any area of the body that has muscles. Depending on the cause, the discomfort may be mild or extremely severe.

The most common causes of muscle aches include:

Stress

Stress makes it harder for the body to fight off disease. In people who are unwell and stressed, the muscles may ache as the body struggles to combat inflammation or infection.

Symptoms of stress include:

  • heart palpitations or an increased heart rate
  • high blood pressure
  • headaches
  • shaking
  • chest pains
  • feeling breathless or hyperventilating

People can try to combat stress by learning relaxation techniques and removing themselves from stressful situations where possible.

Nutritional deficit

A person may experience muscular aches and pains because they are not getting the proper nutrition from their diet.

Vitamin D plays a particularly important role in ensuring that the muscles function correctly. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium, and a deficiency can lead to hypocalcemia.

Hypocalcemia is a condition in which the blood calcium level is low, which can affect the bones and organs in addition to the muscles.

Dehydration

A person who is dehydrated may experience muscle aches.

Drinking enough water is vital to keep the body functioning properly as it can quickly begin to shut down without adequate fluids. Dehydration causes essential bodily functions, such as breathing and digestion, to become more difficult.

People should be aware of how much water they are drinking. The recommended amount is 6–8 glasses of water each day. If hot weather or exercise causes a person to sweat more than usual, they will need to drink more than this.

Sprains and strains

Strains, sprains, and other injuries can cause muscle pain and discomfort.

People may find that a particular area of the body becomes stiff and achy if it is injured. Pulling muscles can also cause muscle soreness.

Some sprains and strains do not need treatment, but a person should rest, take over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, or use heat packs to ease the symptoms.

However, if the injury is causing significant pain, restricting normal movement, or not improving with time, it is advisable to make an appointment with a doctor.

Sleep deficiencies

A lack of sleep can have a severe impact on the body.

Sleep allows the body to rest and recuperate, and a person’s muscles may ache if they do not get enough sleep.

A lack of quality sleep can also make people feel sluggish and slow. It can affect people’s ability to think clearly and make it harder for them to carry out everyday tasks.

Too much physical activity

Overdoing exercise can lead to stiff, sore muscles.

The following factors can make a person more susceptible to muscle aches and pains when exercising:

  • being unused to exercise
  • trying a new exercise
  • exercising more intensely or for longer than usual
  • failing to warm up or stretch properly

Infections, diseases, and hereditary conditions

Many different medical issues can cause muscle aches. Conditions that most commonly affect the muscles include:

Some people who have muscle aches may notice the following symptoms alongside the soreness and discomfort in their muscles:

  • stiffness and weakness in the affected area
  • fever
  • a rash
  • a bite mark
  • dizziness
  • difficulty breathing
  • signs of infection, such as redness and swelling

Some of these symptoms, such as a very high fever or difficulty breathing, will require immediate medical attention.

If the cause of the ache is a strain, an injury, tension, or stress, people will usually feel discomfort in a particular area.

When aches occur throughout the entire body, this is more likely to be due to an infection, medication, or underlying illness.

Home remedies are often sufficient to relieve aches resulting from minor injuries, too much exercise, or stress.

Many people can treat their symptoms using the R.I.C.E method, which involves:

  • Rest: Rest the affected area and discontinue the activity that caused the injury.
  • Ice: Use an ice pack or bag of frozen peas to help relieve pain and reduce swelling. Apply ice to the area for 15–20 minutes three times a day.
  • Compression: Use a compression bandage to help reduce swelling.
  • Elevation: If possible, elevate the feet to minimize inflammation.

Other helpful home remedies include:

  • using OTC pain relievers
  • carefully stretching out the affected muscles
  • taking part in activities that encourage relaxation and reduce stress, such as yoga and meditation

Muscle aches and pains that are severe or do not resolve may be a symptom of an underlying condition that requires medical assessment and treatment.

A person should see a doctor if they:

  • notice any signs of infection, such as redness and swelling
  • have a tick bite
  • develop a rash
  • believe that medication is causing the muscle pain

It is crucial to seek immediate medical assistance if muscle pain occurs alongside:

  • difficulty breathing
  • difficulty swallowing
  • feeling dizzy
  • a stiff neck and high fever
  • muscle weakness
  • an inability to move the affected area
  • vomiting
  • a reduction in urine volume or sudden water retention

People may be able to prevent aching muscles from occurring due to tension, stress, and intense physical activity by doing the following:

  • stretching before exercising
  • exercising regularly to keep muscles toned
  • warming up before exercise and cooling down afterward
  • taking regular breaks if sitting for extended periods

Most causes of muscle aches are benign, but persistent aching may require medical care.

Arm pain When to see a doctor

Seek emergency treatment if you have:

  • Arm, shoulder or back pain that comes on suddenly, is unusually severe, or is accompanied by pressure, fullness or squeezing in your chest (this may signal a heart attack)
  • An obvious deformity or protruding bone in your arm or wrist, especially if you have bleeding or other injuries

See your doctor right away if you have:

  • Arm, shoulder or back pain that occurs with any sort of exertion and is relieved by rest — possibly signaling heart disease or chest discomfort caused by reduced blood flow to your heart muscle (angina)
  • A sudden injury to your arm, particularly if you hear a snap or cracking sound
  • Severe pain and swelling in your arm
  • Trouble moving your arm normally or turning your arm from palm up to palm down and vice versa

Schedule an office visit if you have:

  • Arm pain that doesn’t improve after home care
  • Increasing redness, swelling or pain in the injured area

Self-care

Even serious arm injuries can be helped initially with home treatment. If you think that you have a broken arm or wrist, apply ice packs to the affected area and use a sling to help hold your arm still until you can get medical care.

If you have a compressed nerve or repetitive strain injury, be consistent about therapy; maintain good posture; and take frequent breaks at work and during repetitive activities, such as playing an instrument or practicing your golf swing.

Most other types of arm pain will get better on their own, especially if you start R.I.C.E. measures soon after your injury.

  • Rest. Take a break from your normal activities.
  • Ice. Place an ice pack or bag of frozen peas on the sore area for 15 to 20 minutes three times a day.
  • Compression. Use a compression bandage to reduce swelling.
  • Elevation. If possible, elevate your arm to help reduce swelling.

Home remedies and healthy habits for neck and shoulder pain

Along with other types of chronic pain, neck and shoulder pain can be treated with a combination of natural therapies and healthy practices. Hot and cold therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, and healthy posture are top recommendations.

Hot, cold and electrotherapy

Heating pads, ice or cold packs, and electrotherapy are natural ways to get relief from neck and shoulder pain. A general rule of thumb suggests choosing different therapies based on how long you’ve been experiencing pain.

Use cold for recent neck or shoulder pain

During the first six weeks after a fresh injury, experts recommend applying ice to help reduce inflammation and pain. Ice packs, cold sprays, and/or cold gels are great options to relieve acute swelling.

Use heat for chronic aches and pains

Heat encourages blood flow and helps relax tight muscles. This type of therapy can be introduced six weeks after an injury, and also works best for lingering aches and pains. Make sure your heat therapy isn’t too hot. Try:

  • Heating pads
  • Heating packs
  • Hot towels
  • Warm baths, whirlpools and saunas
  • Warm baths with Epsom salts

Try electrotherapy for short and long-term neck and shoulder pain

TENS, or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, is a drug-free alternative to pain relief that works for both short- and long-term pain. TENS units use mild, pain-free electrical currents to disrupt pain signals.

Make sure you don’t place the TENS unit pads too close to your head or sides of your neck and spine. Please follow the manufacturer’s directions for the best and safest pad placement.

More TENS unit placement tips

Stretching and strengthening for neck and shoulder pain

Stretching and strengthening help relieve pain and also build up muscle support to prevent future injuries. These gentle exercises should not make you feel any additional pain, so if they do, stop right away and consult a healthcare professional.

Stretches for neck pain

Here are three simple stretches to relieve neck pain.

  1. Lower your chin to your chest while keeping your shoulders straight. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds. Relax and slowly lift your chin back to the starting position.
  2. Rotate your head to one side while keeping your shoulders straight. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Relax and slowly return to the first position. Repeat on the other side.
  3. Tilt your head so that you’re moving your ear toward your shoulder. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds. Relax and slowly return to the first position. Tilt your head to the other side and repeat.

Use these stretches as a warm up to your strengthening exercises.

Strengthening exercises for neck pain

Here are two exercises to help prevent future neck pain and injuries:

Squeeze your shoulder blades together and hold for 5 seconds. Don’t squeeze too hard; it should feel comfortable. Repeat 10 times twice a day.

Keeping your neck in a neutral position, do a wall pushup with your feet shoulder-width apart and your elbows straight. Repeat 10 times with 1 to 2 sets. Do this twice a day.

Stretching exercises for shoulder pain

These stretching exercises help loosen up the tight muscles that cause pain and can improve flexibility to prevent future injuries.

Move your chin forward, then slowly pull it back toward your throat, tucking slightly. Keep your chin parallel to the floor. Do this up to 10 times hourly.

Stand upright with a slight bend to your upper back. Now roll your shoulders up, back and down in a fluid circle. Do this 10 times, and then switch directions and roll your shoulders forward 10 times.

Use these stretches as a warm up to your strengthening exercises.

Strengthening exercises for shoulder pain

These are two examples of strengthening exercises that help prevent shoulder pain using little to no equipment.

  • Fill a water bottle (1.5 liters or so) about ¾ full
  • Keeping your arm straight, hold the bottle in front of you at shoulder height for 30 to 60 seconds
  • Switch arms, doing this 3 times on each side
  • Lie on your stomach with your arms at your sides. Put a pillow under your forehead if you need to
  • Gently bring your shoulder blades together and toward your feet
  • Relax your shoulders about halfway down and hold for 10 seconds
  • Release your shoulders and repeat the exercise 10 times

You can also prevent neck and shoulder pain by working on your posture.

Adjusting your posture to prevent neck and shoulder pain

It might not be obvious, but posture has a cascading effect on other parts of the body. Paying attention to your core strength and lower back can ease strain on your neck and shoulders.

Check your standing posture

Take the wall test to adjust your standing posture.

  • Stand with your head, shoulder blades, and buttocks touching the wall
  • Keep your heels around 2 to 4 inches away from the wall
  • Put your hand behind the curve in your back and touch the wall with your palm

Your hand should fit neatly inside of this space.

  • If the fit is too loose, tighten your abdominal muscles
  • If it’s too tight, arch your back

Remember what it feels like when you find the right spot. This is the standing posture you want to maintain as much as possible. Do the wall test daily as many times as you need to.

Adjust your sitting posture

If you spend a lot of time behind a desk, fixing your sitting posture is especially important.

  • Avoid crossing your legs
  • Keep your feet flat with your ankles in front of your knees
  • Make sure your feet touch the floor or use a footrest
  • Relax your shoulders so they’re not too rounded or pulled backwards
  • Keep your elbows close to your sides and bent at about 90 degrees
  • Unlike standing posture, make sure your whole back touches the chair. Use a back pillow if you need to
  • Make sure your thighs and hips are supported with a well-padded seat
  • Keep your thighs and hips parallel to the floor

Make sure to take breaks from sitting by adjusting your position, taking brief walks, and stretching your muscles.

Maintaining good health and well-being requires taking care of your whole body. The causes and cures for neck and back pain are no exception to the rule. Remember, if pain persists or you are unsure that you may have an injury, consult a healthcare professional.

Remedies for Muscle and Joint Pain

Pain felt in muscles and joints can be annoying, discomforting, and debilitating. By instinct, we want to immediately relieve pain the moment we first feel it, looking for a quick remedy that will go to work fast. Some forms of pain require more intense remedies, but there are some home remedies that you can use to help with muscle and joint pain. Here are a few home remedy ideas you can try the next time you experience pain in your muscles or joints:

Epsom Salt

Soaking in a tub of warm water with a couple of scoops of Epsom salt has been a proven method for addressing aching muscles over the years. Epsom salt is made up of magnesium sulfate, which is a natural muscle relaxant. It also helps to reduce swelling by drawing excess fluids out of muscle and joint tissue. Try soaking for 15 minutes at a time, 3 times a week.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Many have found that either drinking apple cider vinegar or rubbing it directly on the area of the sore muscle or joint can help to relieve pain. Those who drink it typically mix it with water and honey to help with the sour taste while others simply take a tablespoon full.

Ginger

Drinking ginger tea is another way to relieve muscle pain. The anti-inflammatory properties in ginger make it an excellent remedy for both muscle and joint pain. In fact, research has shown encouraging results for those with OsteoArthritis who drink ginger tea.

Heat and Cold

Using hot and cold compresses helps to ease joint pain. Heat helps to increase blood flow, which relaxes sore muscles and joints and decreases pain. Cold treatment can reduce inflammation and can also numb the area around the aching muscle or joint. Most people will alternate between heat and cold for best results.

Turmeric

Containing an active ingredient called curcumin that is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, turmeric is an excellent remedy for joint and muscle pain. Studies have shown that using turmeric is as effective as using ibuprofen for pain relief for those with OsteoArthritis.

Garlic

Garlic is rich in both sulfur and selenium, both of which can help to relieve joint and muscle pain. The sulfur in garlic helps to relieve inflammation, while selenium has an antirheumatic effect. This can be helpful for those with arthritis who tend to have low levels of selenium in the blood.

Of course, if you are experiencing pain on a regular basis, you may need more advanced treatment. Chronic joint pain could be a symptom of OsteoArthritis and should be addressed sooner than later. Arrowhead Health Centers has treatment plans available to help those with OsteoArthritis as they work to manage their pain and symptoms.

11 Ways to Relieve Pain Naturally

Many people with arthritis want to treat their joint pain without the expense and potential side effects of medications. There are several natural ways to decrease pain and improve day-to-day living. Try one or a combination of these approaches and see what works for you.

Knee Strengthening Exercises

Save

Stretching and strengthening your joints affected by arthritis can help decrease pain and increase flexibility. See Knee Strengthening Exercises

1. Get moving

Exercise is frequently associated with a decrease in arthritis joint pain. 15 Exercise may reduce pain because it strengthens muscles that support joints, triggers the body to produces endorphins that relieve pain, both, or something else.

See Ways to Get Exercise When You Have Arthritis

What type of exercise you do depends on your current fitness level and other factors, such as where you live and whether you have access to a gym. Walking, pool exercise, and tai chi are considered gentle on joints and good for beginners.

See Exercising with Arthritis

2. Eat more fiber

Research suggests that people who eat high-fiber diets have less osteoarthritis pain.6,7 Moreover, people who eat foods high in fiber produce lots of short-chain fatty acids, which can help foster a healthy balance of microbes in the digestive tract. An imbalance of microbes—a condition called gut dysbiosis—is associated with a higher risk of body-wide inflammation and inflammatory arthritic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.810

3. Warm-up aching joints

Applying heat to painful joints can ease your discomfort. It can increase blood flow to sore muscles, loosens stiff joints, and can distract the brain from pain. Try heat therapy using a:

  • Hot water bottle
  • Gel-filled pad that can be heated in the microwave
  • Electric heating pad
  • Hot bath

See When and Why to Apply Heat to an Arthritic Joint

You can also buy a heat wrap, such as Thermacare, which can provide continuous, low-level heat for several hours while you go about your day.

5. Cultivate relationships

People with chronic pain who have social networks tend to rate their pain lower and are less likely to report that pain interferes with their day-to-day activities.12 There are many ways to expand your social network—for example, you can join a book club, volunteer, or participate in a local support group for people with chronic pain. If leaving the house poses challenges, consider joining an online group where people with your condition can share experiences and offer support.

Visit our Back and Neck Pain Support Group to find advice and support from others with chronic pain.

6. Stretch

Your body is designed for movement. Ironically, if you’re not moving much because you’re in pain, your inactivity can make the pain worse. Gentle stretches can help you maintain your mobility and range of motion—and keep pain at bay. Your doctor or physical therapist can help you find stretches and exercises that are appropriate for your unique situation.

See Knee Stretches and Shoulder Stretches

7. Try turmeric

The turmeric root has been shown to have great anti-inflammatory properties and many people add turmeric powder to sauces, smoothies, or tea. But curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, only makes up about 3% of it, so experts often suggest that people take curcumin supplements in order to get an effective amount.

For many people, a daily curcumin supplement of 200 mg to 1,000 mg is okay. However, check with your primary health provider before taking any supplement to make sure it won’t interact with your current medications or put you at risk for other health conditions. Also, keep an eye out for supplements that contain preservatives or other additives, such as gluten, dairy, and soy.

8. Practice good sleep habits

Getting enough sleep is important for managing pain and promoting healing. Practice habits that help you get restful, adequate sleep. For example, make your bedroom quiet and dark, ban electronics from the bedroom, and establish a regular schedule for going to bed and getting up.

See Therapies for Treating Insomnia

9. Meditate

Meditation is a quick, simple, and free way to relax. One easy method: choose a sound that is pleasing to you but has no particular meaning, sit or lie somewhere comfortable, close your eyes, and repeat the sound in your mind. You can also try guided meditation, which involves a source giving you suggestions to guide your meditative thoughts. Many phone apps, online videos, and DVDs offer guided meditation.

Start with a few minutes of meditation per session. You may gradually lengthen your daily meditation time to 10, 20, or even 30 minutes.

10. Try acupuncture

It’s not well understood how this ancient Chinese healing technique functions, but some people report it helps reduce their chronic pain.

While there is not a lot of high-quality research regarding acupuncture, the studies that do exist suggest acupuncture may work better than a placebo to treat:

  • Knee and hip arthritis13,14
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ)15,16
  • Neck pain17
  • Sciatica related back pain18

Acupuncture is generally regulated by states. A number of states require acupuncturists to pass examinations conducted by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine to become licensed acupuncture practitioners. As with any health care professional, asking in advance about the practitioner’s experience and training is advised.

11. Enjoy a massage

Therapeutic massage can loosen your tight muscles, get your blood flowing, and calm your mind. A review of several small medical studies19 found massage may help reduce pain in people who have osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, though results were mixed.

See Manual Therapies for Arthritis Pain

There are several great ways to reduce your joint pain that don’t involve medication. A natural treatment may reduce pain by a small amount, but when combined with other natural treatments, you may be able to cut your pain dramatically. Consider trying the ideas above, and ask your health care provider for other suggestions. The best treatments are ones that suit your lifestyle and that you can commit to in the long term.

Folk remedies for the treatment of veins

Today on the Internet you can find many ways of alternative treatment of any disease, and varicose veins is no exception. The variety of folk remedies for veins is surprising.

Herbal decoctions, infusions, ointments, mixtures, applications and compresses are offered.

The most common ingredients in the “folk vein cure” are: cabbage leaf, unripe, green tomatoes, hop decoction, nettle, potatoes, horse chestnut, garlic with butter, Kalanchoe, wormwood with sour milk or yogurt, apple cider vinegar, horseradish leaves.

There are also complex multicomponent ointments containing laundry soap (in liquid form), ghee, onion juice, aloe juice, ichthyol ointment, honey, Vishnevsky ointment.

The “recipe of the healer Vanga” is also mentioned, according to which a person suffering from varicose veins should walk in the early morning on wet grass in cotton socks, and after getting the socks wet, wait until they dry on their feet.

In such a variety of ingredients and methods of treating varicose veins with folk remedies, it is difficult to make a choice. We’ll help you figure it out a bit.

Firstly, I would like to note right away that alternative treatment of veins, as a rule, is aimed at improving the tone of the vessel wall and accelerating blood circulation through the veins.

It is effective in preventing the development of varicose veins or in its initial stages: the appearance of heaviness in the legs, edema of the feet and legs at the end of the working day, the occurrence of spider veins – telangiectasias.

In the presence of varicose veins, no folk remedies, ointments and decoctions are able to affect the vessel wall so much that it will restore its original structure.

Therefore, with advanced varicose veins, you should not expect a miracle from the folk treatment. It is able to somewhat reduce the symptoms of the disease and stop its further progression, but one cannot count on a complete cure.

Secondly, when choosing a folk remedy for the treatment of veins, preference should be given to those methods whose effectiveness has been proven by traditional medicine.

Tincture for varicose veins

– Lingonberry (has a diuretic and disaggregation effect),

– bearberry (used as a diuretic),

– St. John’s wort (contains a large amount of rutin, and therefore reduces capillary permeability, it also contains a lot of vitamin E),

– plantain (anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action).

All of these herbs are mixed in equal amounts. A mixture of herbs in the amount of one teaspoon is brewed in a glass of boiling water. This infusion is consumed 1 to 3 times a day.

Chestnut for varicose veins

Horse chestnut has a good effect in the treatment of varicose veins.

It has anti-inflammatory properties, strengthens the walls of blood vessels, relieves fatigue and tension in the legs.

A tincture based on it, which is sold in pharmacies, or which you can make yourself, is very popular. To do this, mix 5 tablespoons of crushed flowers or chestnut fruits with 1 liter of alcohol, insist for a week in a dark place and strain.

The agent is taken orally 3 times a day 20-30 minutes before meals at the rate of 30-35 drops per 1 tablespoon of water.

Chestnut tincture for varicose veins can be used for rubbing the painful area, as well as for applying compresses.

To increase the effect of treating varicose veins with chestnut tincture, it is recommended to make a contrast shower for the feet before applying the compress.

Buckwheat for varicose veins

Buckwheat is widely used as a folk remedy for the treatment of varicose veins. It contains a large amount of the flavonoid rutin, which increases venous tone, reduces the permeability of the vascular wall and thus has an anti-edema effect.

Buckwheat is used in natural and crushed form. It is worth noting that rutin used in the production of drugs is obtained from buckwheat.

What if folk remedies do not help?

Even in the initial stages of varicose veins, alternative treatment does not help everyone.

Despite the regular use of folk remedies for veins, cramps and soreness in the calf muscles, numbness of the legs and swelling along the venous vessels can be added to fatigue of the legs and edema.

In this case, we recommend that you consult a doctor who will select for you the most effective method of treating varicose veins.

Taking into account the requirements of modern medical science for the treatment of varicose veins, for the treatment of this disease, doctors, including in our clinic, try to use non-surgical minimally invasive methods of treatment.

Vein sclerotherapy

All over the world, sclerotherapy has long been a leader in the treatment of varicose veins. During this procedure, a special drug is injected into the vein, which leads to the “sticking” of the walls of the varicose vein.

A separate type of sclerotherapy is treatment with a foam form of a sclerosant (Foam-form).This technique allows you to use a smaller amount of sclerotherapy and at the same time enhance its effect due to closer contact of the substance with the vessel wall.

Laser therapy

Along with sclerotherapy, laser therapy is widely used in the treatment of blood vessels. The laser is capable of removing vessels with a diameter of up to 2-3 mm. The exposure is carried out through the skin, without any cuts or punctures.

Intravascular laser coagulation

A special intravascular laser is used to remove large-diameter dilated veins.

Under the control of an ultrasound scanner, the thinnest laser light guide is inserted into the varicose vein. With its help, a therapeutic effect is exerted on the venous wall.

In this case, selective absorption of laser radiation by the vein wall occurs. A sharp short-term increase in temperature in the affected area leads to the closure of the expanded vessel.

Miniflebectomy

In cases where it is more expedient to remove a varicose vein or a node, the most sparing operation is used – miniflebectomy.

Currently, to improve the cosmetic result, doctors use instruments that allow the removal of varicose veins through a small puncture of the skin.

Instead of a conventional scalpel, large-diameter needles or instruments with a very narrow blade are used to puncture the skin. As a rule, the trace from such a needle becomes completely invisible after a while.

Endoscopic dissection

Patients with trophic skin disorders on the background of varicose veins (age spots, ulcers) are shown to perform endoscopic dissection. The peculiarity of this operation is the use of endoscopic technology and specialized optical equipment. Such equipment allows performing remote intervention from an access located far from trophic disorders within absolutely healthy tissue.

In this case, the length of the incision does not exceed 1.5 cm.

Phlebectomy

In some cases (failure of the valve apparatus of the saphenous vein in the thigh, extensive varicose veins), it is necessary to remove the entire trunk of the saphenous vein through a small incision in the groin.

Removal of varicose veins does not interfere with normal blood circulation and does not harm the body, since no more than 10% of blood passes through the saphenous veins. The imposition of a cosmetic suture, as well as the use of modern suture material, can minimize marks on the skin.

“Hands do not obey”: why do they hurt and how to treat them? | HEALTH

Our contemporaries often go to doctors with complaints of pain in their hands. Why do they appear and how to treat these ailments?

Old “friends”

Pain in the joints of the hands is one of the most common causes that brings people to the office of a rheumatologist. The hands are a very delicate mechanism that can withstand enormous loads. However, some diseases can practically immobilize the hands and cause severe joint pain. Arthralgia, or joint pain, not only worsens the quality of life, but also deprives a person of the opportunity to work and perform basic household activities. There are a lot of diseases that can cause this symptom. Conventionally, the reasons for severe pain in the joints of the hands can be divided into two large groups – inflammatory and mechanical. Inflammatory pain in the hands is usually accompanied by stiffness in the affected joint and is relieved by movement, and swelling and redness of the skin may also occur.

According to statistics, the most common chronic joint disease in the world is arthrosis. To one degree or another, up to 80% of the world’s population suffer from it. Moreover, the disease affects both men and women equally.

This ailment is associated with damage and destruction of the structure of the joints and is characterized by a decrease or loss of mobility. Most often, arthrosis overtakes people of working age – from 30 years old, and every year the number of cases is steadily and steadily increasing. In young people, arthrosis is much less common, but the likelihood of the appearance of the disease also exists due to congenital pathologies of the musculoskeletal system, injuries, excessive physical exertion and improper lifestyle.

“Osteoarthritis develops due to metabolic disorders in the joint, which in turn leads to the fact that the cartilage begins to lose elasticity,” says Tatyana Chelyshkina, a methodologist at the State Healthcare Institution of Healthcare of the Republic of Moldova. – Microcracks and subtle defects appear in the cartilage, which gradually become more pronounced. Moreover, the longer the disease progresses, the more extensive the damage to the cartilage tissue becomes. The formation of synovial fluid, which acts as a natural lubricant for the joint capsule, is also disrupted. The edges of the damaged cartilage become denser, and bone formations grow around the joint, which impede and limit the mobility of the limb, and make movements painful and stiff. ”

Therapy in the treatment of joint diseases, regardless of the cause, should be complex, and efforts should be directed not only to treating the underlying disease, but also to restoring hand functions, as well as relieving pain.At the same time, pain relief and functional development of the hand during rehabilitation are subject to general rules. So, the main remedy for relieving pain in the joints of the hands is medication, and medicinal ointments, which include anti-inflammatory and anesthetic components, help to enhance the effect of drugs. As part of complex therapy or in cases where medication is contraindicated, the doctor may prescribe non-drug
methods.

Disease of the present

Now some scientists are talking about new types of diseases of the joints of the hands, which negatively affect the general condition of the body
person.

“My work is connected with a computer,” says our reader Anna Zhgutova. – Often my eyes get tired, and I’m already used to it. But lately, she began to notice that my arms are starting to hurt from working for a long time at the computer. What is it connected with? ”

Some modern scientists have indeed come to the conclusion in their research that people whose profession is closely related to long-term work at the monitor begin to experience pain in their hands.

“Computers are ever deeper intruding into most spheres of human activity, be it science, medicine, manufacturing or households,” says Anna Lushnikova, PhD in Biology.“Today, millions of people spend 8-10 hours a day at the display. Despite the fact that protective screens have appeared and the image quality has noticeably improved, the professional illnesses of programmers are not going to go down in history. For example, many computer operators experience severe pain in their arms, accompanied by muscle cramps. As a result, they develop a complex of neuromuscular disorders or a chronic disease of the hands. ”

Recently, there have been many hypotheses regarding the nature of this disease. One of them was formulated by English neurophysiologists. According to scientists, working with a computer keyboard is like playing a musician on the piano and requires significant muscle tension in the hands and fingers. Therefore, with prolonged monotonous work on the keyboard, the sensitivity of the peripheral nerve endings on the limbs decreases. Subsequently, a person experiences lethargy, hand cramps begin, and sometimes fine coordination of finger movements is lost.

Scientists recommend technologists to seriously engage in the design of personal computer keyboards. For example, change the fastening of the keys, since their vibration when pressed can serve as a resonator for strong excitation of nerve endings. It has long been known that tapping your fingers on a table or massaging your fingertips allows you to focus, improve attention and memory. Excessive “tapping” on the keyboard over time leads to an outrageous inhibition of the corresponding nerve centers, a decrease in the sensitivity threshold and disruption of the connections of the nerve endings with the central nervous system.

Nip

Scientists from the University of California at San Diego (USA) have created neutrophilic enanoscopes that can neutralize and absorb inflammatory proteins – cytokines. They are produced by cells in the joints during the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

American experts have learned to influence the causes of this disease: a special nanodevice absorbs proteins that play a key role in the development of arthritis.

The nanoscope method stops the process at the very beginning: by acting as a decoy, it can intercept cytokines and prevent more neutrophils from signaling to the joints. As a result, joint inflammation and damage are reduced. Thus, the nanoscope literally “absorbs” proteins that contribute to the development of rheumatoid arthritis.

Types of diseases of the joints of the hands

■ Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the body’s defense system fails and begins to perceive its own cells as foreign. As a result, the joint begins to gradually collapse, causing inflammation and severe pain in the affected area. Rheumatoid arthritis can manifest itself both in the elderly and at a young age – 25-30 years. It usually develops symmetrically – that is, the same joints on both hands are affected. Over time, they deform, which leads to curvature of the fingers and loss of mobility.

■ Gout – accumulation of crystals of uric acid and its derivatives in the joints. The disease is often referred to as “meat-eating disease” as it often develops in those who eat too much meat. Gout causes very severe excruciating pain in the joints of the legs, but as the disease progresses, the hands also begin to suffer. Around the affected joints, characteristic gouty bumps are formed, which cause burning throbbing pain at night, by the morning the pain sensations subside somewhat.

■ Osteoarthritis results from wear and tear of the articular cartilage. Typically, this disease begins to develop in old age. With osteoarthritis of the joints of the hands, pain is noted in the small joints of the hands, the metacarpal-carpal joint of the thumb, in the elbow and shoulder joints. Symptoms of osteoarthritis in the wrist joint include pain during physical exertion, painful sensitivity to pressure in the area of the injured joint, and limitation of mobility.

■ Arthritis, which is always caused by various kinds of infectious diseases that cause inflammation of the joint, is very common in modern people.Meanwhile, there are two forms of arthritis: acute arthritis – it is characterized by severe pain, swelling, redness of the skin in the joint area and an increase in temperature; there is also chronic arthritis – this ailment reminds of itself with painful sensations only from time to time, for example, when a person does physical exercise or some kind of work.

Treatment of hemorrhoids with folk remedies

Hemorrhoids are considered a fairly common disease today.According to medical statistics, every seventh person at least once in his life had to deal with such unpleasant sensations as pain and burning in the anus, which are the main clinical signs of the disease.

Treatment of hemorrhoids with folk remedies, along with classical therapy, is widely used by patients to get rid of suffering. The fear of most patients before the clinic makes them widely use traditional methods of treating hemorrhoids: people hope to get rid of the painful problem with the help of herbs and simple conspiracies.

The debate about how effective folk treatment of hemorrhoids is, has been going on for more than a dozen years, while representatives of alternative quackery and official science cite amazing examples of miraculous healings. However, do not forget about the need for a comprehensive and, above all, a qualified approach to the treatment of hemorrhoids.

Traditional methods of treatment of hemorrhoids

In most cases, traditional methods of treating hemorrhoids mean popular homeopathic recipes that can relieve inflammation around the anus and reduce blood stagnation in hemorrhoids.

Name of the method (procedure)

Brief characteristic and application

Possible side effects

phyto-baths

The most common of the methods of folk treatment for hemorrhoids are all kinds of phyto-baths with herbal and mineral products of natural origin. The initial stage of hemorrhoids is quite effectively amenable to such treatment, subject to the parallel use of suppositories and all kinds of topical ointments that have an angioprotective and anti-inflammatory effect.

Those who believe that such folk remedies cannot be harmful should be reminded that at least half of the herbs used in alternative medicine have a high allergic index, and therefore should be used with caution by persons prone to autoimmune diseases.

Decoctions and tinctures

This refers to decoctions and alcoholic or aqueous infusions of medicinal herbs and preparations used internally, including to lower blood pressure or inflammation.

It is especially important here before starting to take the drug to consult a doctor and take into account all the possible consequences – from individual intolerance to the components to contraindications for taking due to other diseases you have. So, for example, pressure-reducing drugs are categorically contraindicated in arterial hypotension.

And diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (gastritis, urolithiasis, etc.) can make their own amendments to the use of this or that drug.

Compresses

Compresses are used for hemorrhoids both as a folk remedy and in a complex of drugs recognized by official medicine. They are primarily designed to reduce pain symptoms, swelling and inflammation in the external location of hemorrhoids.

For compresses, herbs, minerals, and even plain (preferably purified) water are used.

As in the case of the phyto-bath, allergic reactions are possible

Consider also several of the most common and well-known folk remedies for the treatment of hemorrhoids:

The name of the drug used for the treatment of hemorrhoids in traditional medicine

Brief characteristic and application

Possible side effects

Potatoes

Often, ordinary potatoes are used to treat pathology, used in various prescription variations. Some herbalists recommend applying grated vegetable to the affected area or using it as a candle.

The healing effect of raw potatoes is due to the regenerating and enveloping properties of starch, which relieves discomfort, however, alas, like other methods of treating hemorrhoids with folk remedies, which is not able to cope with the disease radically.

Depending on the individual characteristics of your organism, as well as in the case of open ulcers in the acute stage of the disease, allergic reactions or irritation of the mucous membranes are possible.

Wormwood

It is used in the form of a tincture (inside) or a decoction (for microclysters and lotions).

Wormwood has anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and analgesic effects that help to cope with exacerbation of hemorrhoids. It is also believed that wormwood reduces the intensity of bleeding in the acute stage of the disease.

We recommend you be especially careful when using wormwood infusions. In connection with the stimulating effect of certain active substances of wormwood on the central nervous system, there have been cases (with, so to speak, abuse) when the patient had convulsions and even hallucinations.

Contraindicated in anemia, pregnancy, breastfeeding.

In addition, you should take into account the stimulating effect of wormwood on the pancreas and gallbladder: caution should be used when using wormwood as a folk remedy for the treatment of hemorrhoids if you have any pathology of the digestive system.

Cooking salt

For external use only!

As for the internal use of salt, many experts insist on a sharp reduction in salt intake during periods of exacerbation or intensive treatment.

Warm salt baths are sometimes recommended.

Do not forget that prolonged warm, let alone hot baths can be harmful to patients with hemorrhoids.Limit yourself only to warm salt baths for 10-15 minutes – no more!

Celandine

This plant has a wide range of applications in traditional methods of treating both hemorrhoids and many other – primarily skin – diseases.

The most widespread use of celandine tinctures is both external (in the form of lotions, compresses and tampons) and internal.

First of all, do not forget that celandine is essentially a poisonous plant. This explains its disinfectant and bactericidal effect.

But this means that celandine must be used very carefully. Especially when it comes to internal use.

Oak

Excellent astringent and tanning properties of this plant made it possible to effectively use it, including as a remedy for hemorrhoids.

There are known recipes for infusion from young oak shoots, decoctions of oak bark and baths or compresses based on them.

Oak can also be included in multi-component collections for drinking.

The active substances contained in oak products are excellent pain relief, reduce inflammation, reduce or even stop bleeding in hemorrhoids.

Perhaps, oak has no special contraindications, except perhaps for individual intolerance.

Of course, the list of traditional, or as they are commonly called folk remedies and methods of treating hemorrhoids, can be continued, if not indefinitely, then for a very, very long time. But even with these small examples, you can see that any drug should be approached very individually and with a certain degree of caution.

And, of course, do not neglect the recommendations of your attending physician.Do not trust the untested methods of dubious “healers”. Always consult with experts before trying another “panacea”. And do not forget that curing hemorrhoids is a rather long and complex process.

Do-it-yourself folk treatment for hemorrhoids? Don’t risk it!

So, trying to get rid of the disease by all available means, do not get carried away with self-treatment. Also because under the guise of hemorrhoids, other, much more dangerous pathologies can hide, which, without proper treatment, can turn into a chronic form.Attempts to treat hemorrhoids with folk remedies can be used with caution only if the diagnosis is confirmed by a certified specialist.

Despite the seeming simplicity of using traditional methods of treating hemorrhoids, the use of such recipes is good only as a preventive measure. It is unlikely that you will be able to get rid of hemorrhoids: you can only temporarily relieve unpleasant symptoms, which will return sooner or later. And it will always return until you consult a proctologist.

Is it possible to cure varicose veins at home with folk remedies?

Maybe doctors in hospitals are hiding something and there is that magic, available to everyone, a miracle cure that can easily cure varicose veins? In the conditions of not the highest medical culture, by European standards, an open shortage of good specialists (phlebologists) in the public sector of medicine, many asked this question. After all, they write on the Internet and say on television that there really is.

Here is such a funny folk remedy for varicose veins – treatment with money!

Let’s try to answer such an urgent modern request. Treatment of varicose veins at home with folk remedies is a fairly widely exploited topic in various forums and sites on the wide open spaces of the Internet.

Folk remedies for the treatment of varicose veins, which are offered to us today

Decoctions, tinctures, compresses, ointments based on natural ingredients, also green tomatoes, garlic and lemon extract, fresh juices, dope seeds, in general, the list goes on for a very long time.

Cooking miracle drugs for varicose veins

Of all the proposals on the Internet, in the absence of appropriate contraindications, I personally would recommend the following: tequila with lime or a glass of good whiskey. You will not cure varicose veins, but at least for a while you will forget about it! At the same time, the use of “effective” traditional medicine is, at best, postponing a visit to a specialist. Hence, a waste of precious time. The lack of adequate treatment for varicose veins always leads to the development of complications. The progression of edema, darkening of the skin, the appearance of ulcers and the development of thrombosis are an integral part of the pathogenesis of varicose veins and the life of a person who denies himself modern treatment.

Even with this method, trophic ulcers are treated today

Traditional medicine in the past was the only one that somehow could help a person with various diseases.Sometimes such treatment eased the condition, sometimes, on the contrary, aggravated the situation. The lack of alternatives and formalized knowledge about diseases, including venous diseases, forced our ancestors to use various gifts of nature for medical purposes. Speculative reasoning and even recommendations for the treatment of varicose veins with folk remedies in the 21st century look ridiculous, and the consequences of such treatment can be negative and even fatal.

Evidence-based phlebology against the use of folk remedies in the treatment of varicose veins!

The competence and decency of those who publish and distribute information on the treatment of varicose veins at home with folk remedies can be said for as long as the list of miraculous remedies is endless. The world of modern medicine is arranged in such a way that any, even the slightest significant, achievement becomes known pretty quickly. A person who comes up with or finds a good way of conservative treatment of varicose veins will be able to apply for the Nobel Prize. But this has not happened yet.

Do not use folk remedies for varicose veins!

Really effective treatment of varicose veins is possible only with the help of professionals, specialists working in good city phlebological centers. This is an objective reality, and folk remedies for the treatment of varicose veins are a good way to get one or more complications of varicose veins, completely free of charge, without leaving your home.

Questions from patients about the treatment of varicose veins with folk remedies

Marina from Moscow asks: what folk remedies for varicose veins can you recommend to an elderly woman who is not planning surgical treatment?

Dear Marina! I cannot recommend folk remedies for the treatment of varicose veins, since I do not know of any truly effective one.As a means of preventing possible complications, I can recommend wearing compression hosiery of the 2nd class of compression of a trusted brand. I also advise you to visit a phlebologist and undergo an ultrasound examination of the lower extremities in a good Moscow phlebology center.

Elena from Moscow asks: how do you feel about the use of folk remedies for the treatment of varicose veins?

Dear Elena! I have a negative attitude to the use of folk remedies for the treatment of varicose veins.Despite the good positive psychological effect of such methods, varicose veins are a serious disease with frequent and equally serious complications.

Lyudmila from Moscow asks: my mother uses salt baths to treat varicose veins. It helps her, she feels better. Do you recommend this treatment?

Dear Lyudmila! I cannot recommend or approve the use of salt baths for varicose veins. In this case, the hypertonic saline solution has the effect of dehydration (dehydration). This leads to temporary relief. I advise you to think about the possible consequences of this treatment. Varicose veins on the legs remain and continue their negative effect, possible complications in the form of thrombophlebitis and thrombosis can occur at any time.

Polina from Moscow is interested in: in the state polyclinic I was recommended to have an operation to remove veins. I don’t want to, I’m afraid of anesthesia. I tried a lot of traditional medicine, even apple cider vinegar, I did not notice the effect.I’m thinking about alternative Chinese medicine. Your opinion?

Dear Polina! Today, if you have been diagnosed with varicose veins, a good phlebologist will no longer offer an operation under anesthesia. Varicose veins are removed in a modern way using an outpatient procedure from 30 to 40 minutes without any anesthesia.
