Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by bacterial infection, so doctors usually treat them with antibiotics — but is it possible to treat a UTI without antibiotics?

UTIs are among the most common bacterial infections in the United States. They are especially prevalent in women, around 50 percent of whom will have one during their lifetime. UTIs also tend to reoccur.

Increasingly, people want to know whether non-antibiotic treatments can resolve UTIs. We explore this possibility here and provide seven evidence-based home remedies that can help to treat UTIs.

Antibiotics are an effective treatment for UTIs. However, the body can often resolve minor, uncomplicated UTIs on its own without the help of antibiotics.

By some estimates, 25–42 percent of uncomplicated UTI infections clear on their own. In these cases, people can try a range of home remedies to speed up recovery.

Complicated UTIs will require medical treatment. These UTIs involve one or more of the following factors:

  • changes in the urinary tract or organs, such as a swollen prostate or a reduced flow of urine
  • species of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics
  • conditions that affect the immune system, such as HIV, cardiac disease, or lupus

Antibiotics are the standard treatment for UTIs because they kill the bacteria that cause the infections. Most UTIs develop when bacteria enter the urinary tract from outside the body. The species of bacteria most likely to be responsible for UTIs include:

  • Escherichia coli species, which cause up to 90 percent of all bladder infections
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae

While antibiotics can usually treat UTIs quickly and effectively, people can be allergic to them, and their use can carry certain risks.

For instance, an estimated 22 percent of the women receiving treatment for uncomplicated UTIs develop a vaginal Candida infection, which is a type of fungal infection.

Other side effects of antibiotics as UTI treatments include:

More severe risks of using antibiotics include:

Creating stronger strains of bacteria

Over time, some species of bacteria have become resistant to traditional antibiotics. There are several species of E. coli that are showing increasing drug resistance, and these are the primary cause of UTIs.

Every time people use an antibiotic, there is an increased risk of the bacteria developing resistance to it. This is even more likely when people do not follow the doctor’s instructions to complete the full prescribed course of treatment.

As a result, doctors are trying to reduce the use of antibiotics, especially when other treatments may be effective or when illnesses can resolve on their own.

It is essential to continue a course of antibiotics until the end date that the doctor provides. People should also never share antibiotics with others.

Damaging good bacteria

The body contains a community of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live harmoniously and help with bodily functions. Antibiotics may destroy some of these bacteria, which could increase the likelihood of other infections occurring.

While scientific research supports some at-home or natural UTI remedies, others have been a part of traditional medicine systems for thousands of years.

To treat a UTI without antibiotics, people can try the following home remedies:

1. Stay hydrated

Drinking enough water is one of the easiest ways to help prevent and treat UTIs.

Water helps the urinary tract organs remove waste from the body efficiently while retaining vital nutrients and electrolytes.

Being hydrated also dilutes the urine and speeds its journey through the system, making it harder for bacteria to reach the cells that line urinary organs and to cause an infection.

There is no set recommendation for how much people should drink daily, as each person’s water needs are different. On average though, people should drink at least six to eight 8-ounce (oz) glasses of water each day.

2. Urinate when the need arises

Frequent urination puts pressure on bacteria in the urinary tract, which can help to clear them out.

It also reduces the amount of time that bacteria in the urine are exposed to cells in the urinary tract, reducing the risk of them attaching and forming an infection.

Always urinate as soon as possible when the urge strikes to help prevent and treat UTIs.

3. Drink cranberry juice

Cranberry juice is one of the most well-established natural treatments for UTIs. People have also traditionally used it to help clear general infections and speed up wound recovery time.

Studies on the effectiveness of cranberry juice for UTIs have had mixed results. According to one review, cranberry juice contains compounds that may prevent E. coli cells from attaching to cells in the urinary tract.

Cranberry juice also contains antioxidants, including polyphenols, which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

There is no set guideline on how much cranberry juice to drink to treat a UTI, but a common recommendation is to drink around 400 milliliters (mL) of at least 25-percent cranberry juice every day to prevent or treat UTIs.

4. Use probiotics

Beneficial bacteria, known as probiotics, can help keep the urinary tract healthy and free from harmful bacteria.

In particular, a group of probiotics called lactobacilli may help with treating and preventing UTIs. They may do this by:

  • preventing harmful bacteria from attaching to urinary tract cells
  • producing hydrogen peroxide in urine, which is a strong antibacterial
  • lowering urine pH, making conditions less favorable for bacteria

People who take lactobacillus supplements while on antibiotics for UTIs may develop less antibiotic resistance than people not taking them.

Probiotics occur in a variety of fermented and dairy products, including:

  • yogurts
  • kefir
  • some types of cheese
  • sauerkraut

People can also take probiotic supplements, which are usually in the form of a capsule or a powder that mixes into water or other beverages.

5. Get enough vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to improve immune system function.

Vitamin C also reacts with nitrates in urine to form nitrogen oxides that can kill bacteria. It can lower the pH of urine, making it less likely that bacteria will survive.

As with cranberry juice, people have been using vitamin C in various forms to treat UTIs for thousands of years. But there is a lack of quality research to confirm whether or not increasing vitamin C intake can prevent or treat UTIs.

According to the limited research, taking other supplements alongside vitamin C may maximize its benefits.

In a 2016 study, 38 women with recurrent UTIs took vitamin C, probiotics, and cranberries three times daily for 20 days, then stopped for 10 days. They repeated this cycle for 3 months. The researchers concluded that this could be a safe and effective treatment approach for UTIs.

The National Institutes of Health recommend that for people aged 19 and over, women should get at least 75 mg of vitamin C per day, while men need around 90 mg per day. Adults who smoke should take an additional 35 mg of the vitamin each day.

6. Wipe from front to back

Many UTIs develop when bacteria from the rectum or feces gain access to the urethra, the small channel that allows urine to flow out of the body.

Once bacteria are in the urethra, they can travel up into other urinary tract organs where they can lead to infections.

After urinating, wipe in a way that prevents bacteria from coming into contact with the genitals. Use separate pieces of toilet paper to wipe the genitals and anus.

7. Practice good sexual hygiene

Sexual intercourse introduces bacteria and other microbes from outside the body to the urinary tract. Practicing good sexual hygiene can help to reduce the number of bacteria that people can transfer during intercourse and other sexual acts.

Examples of good sexual hygiene include:

  • urinating before and immediately after sex
  • using barrier contraception, such as a condom
  • washing the genitals, especially the foreskin, before and after engaging in sexual acts or intercourse
  • washing the genitals or changing condoms if switching from anal sex to vaginal sex
  • ensuring that sexual partners are aware of any current or previous UTIs

Currently, researchers are trying to design vaccines that would prevent many types of bacteria from being able to attach to body cells properly.

They are also working on developing other UTI vaccines that prevent bacteria from being able to grow and cause infection. To date, only one type of UTI vaccine has reached preliminary human trials. Studies on the rest are still using animals and tissue samples.

If a person suspects that they might have a UTI, they should speak to their doctor for advice on the best way to treat the possible infection.

Antibiotics may not always be necessary to treat UTIs, but it is still important to seek medical attention for any infection or suspected infection. This will reduce the risk of a more severe infection developing that is harder to treat.

The signs and symptoms of UTIs include:

  • increased frequency and urgency of urination
  • pain or burning when urinating
  • low-grade fevers (below 101°F)
  • pressure or cramping in the area around the lower abdomen and groin
  • change in the smell or color of urine
  • cloudy, murky, or bloody urine

Most people develop a UTI at some point in their lifetime, especially women.

Many UTIs go away on their own or with primary care. Researchers are increasingly looking for ways to treat and prevent UTIs without the use of antibiotics.

Several longstanding at-home remedies may help to prevent and treat UTIs.

People who think they have a UTI should always talk with a doctor before trying to treat the infection themselves.

Some of the home remedies listed in this article are available for purchase online.

What to Do and When to See a Doctor

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are very common, particularly in women. A UTI is an infection of the urinary system, which includes your kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Usually, UTIs are an infection of the lower urinary tract, which is your bladder and urethra.

Urinary tract infections happen when bacteria enter your body through the urethra and then spread and multiply in the bladder. The growing bacteria can cause an infection of the urinary tract.

While some people with a UTI don’t experience symptoms, others do. Symptoms may include:

  • A strong, constant feeling that you need to urinate
  • A burning feeling when you urinate
  • Cloudy urine
  • Blood in the urine (including pink, red, or brown urine)
  • Pain in the pelvis, especially in the center

You may be able to cure a mild urinary tract infection at home.

Remedies and Treatment for UTI

Uncomplicated urinary tract infections sometimes go away on their own. In one study, 21 out of 28 women’s infections disappeared without treatment.

Here are a few UTI remedies you can try at home to relieve symptoms and speed your recovery:

Consume Cranberries

Cranberries have been used to treat UTIs for centuries. This is because cranberries contain proanthocyanidins, chemicals that prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. Cranberries also contain quinic acid, which works to kill bacteria in the urinary tract.

While some studies have found that cranberry juice or pills may help treat UTIs, other studies have found no positive effects of cranberries. Even if cranberries don’t actually help treat UTIs, the fruit is unlikely to cause you harm. However, don’t drink cranberry juice if you’re on blood thinners, like warfarin.

Avoid Diuretics and Irritants

Certain drinks may irritate the bladder, including coffee, alcohol, citrus and caffeinated drinks. Avoiding these liquids may help you relieve some symptoms, such as burning during urination. These drinks also act as diuretics, which will make you need to urinate more frequently, possibly making the UTI symptoms more irritating.

Incorporate Probiotics

Probiotics, live bacteria found in some foods and supplements, are important in maintaining natural balance in the vagina, urethra, and bladder. Probiotic supplements help avoid an overgrowth of E. Coli, the bacteria that commonly cause UTIs. Not only can probiotics help treat UTIs, but they also help you prevent UTIs in the future. Probiotics can be found in foods like yogurt. Probiotic pills can also be taken by mouth or inserted into the vagina.

Use a Heating Pad

Another simple home remedy is placing a heating pad on your abdomen. This can help lessen your discomfort.

Hydrate

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water to help flush out your urinary system.

Prioritize Prevention

Instead of only treating UTIs, you can make a point to avoid them. There are several actions you can take to help avoid urinary tract infections in the future. Follow these tips to help prevent UTIs long-term:

  • Urinate after having sex to help flush out any bacteria
  • Stay hydrated, and don’t resist the urge to urinate
  • Wipe from front to back after urinating or defecating
  • Avoid diaphragms and spermicide condoms
  • Avoiding scented products near your genital region, as they can irritate the urethra

Increased levels of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in your diet may also help prevent urinary tract infections. Scientists believe that this is because vitamin C makes the urine more acidic, which helps to prevent bacterial infections of the urinary tract.

When to See a Doctor

If your urinary tract infection does not clear up on its own, your doctor can prescribe antibiotics.

UTIs can be dangerous if the infection spreads to your kidneys. Go see your doctor if you experience fevers, shaking, nausea, or vomiting, as these may be signs of a more serious infection.

If a UTI is left untreated, kidney damage can occur. Sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency, is also possible. In pregnant women, leaving a UTI untreated can lead to premature birth. In men, it can lead to narrowing of the urethra.

15 home remedies for UTI (urinary tract infection)

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an umbrella term that encompasses infections of the upper urinary tract—which possibly includes the kidneys (pyelonephritis)—as well as of the lower urinary tract, which possibly includes the bladder (cystitis). The term UTI is most commonly used interchangeably with those infections involving the lower urinary tract, which generally present as causing mild to moderate pain or discomfort. These UTIs can cause burning sensations while urinating, a sense of urinary urgency or frequency, and pelvic pain; more severe infections may cause flank pain, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting. While medications can treat UTIs quickly, many people also find relief from their UTI symptoms with home remedies. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular home remedies for UTIs.

15 home remedies for UTIs (urinary tract infections)

When bacteria enter the urinary tract system, it can cause a urinary tract infection. Bacteria, and specifically Escherichia coli (E. coli), is the most common cause of UTIs, but dehydration, holding urination for a long time, certain health conditions, and hormonal changes can also cause a UTI or increase your risk of infection. The average UTI can last anywhere from a few days to more than a week. Some UTIs will go away on their own, but more severe cases (like those infections involving the upper urinary tract) require medical attention. With antibiotic treatment, many people with severe UTIs start to feel relief within a couple of days. For mild UTIs, home remedies may help alleviate symptoms, and/or prevent infections from developing.

Here are some of the most common home remedies for UTIs:

  1. Wipe correctly
  2. Wear cotton underwear
  3. Don’t douche
  4. Switch soaps
  5. Change menstrual pads, tampons, cups frequently
  6. Avoid spermicides
  7. Apply heat
  8. Hydrate
  9. Drink cranberry juice
  10. Urinate often
  11. Eat more garlic
  12. Eat less sugar
  13. Supplement with probiotics
  14. Try herbal remedies
  15. Use essential oils with caution

1. Wipe correctly

One of the best things to do to prevent UTIs at home is to stay as clean and dry as possible. Wiping from front to back after urinating or a bowel movement will help keep bacteria from entering the urethra and traveling up the urinary tract.

2. Wear cotton underwear

Wear underwear made from natural fibers to ensure that the urethra stays as clean and dry as possible to prevent bacterial entry. Wearing clothing that’s too tight can block airflow to the urethra. Without airflow, bacteria can gain entry and breed an environment that allows the development of a UTI. Wearing clothes made from synthetic fibers like nylon can trap moisture, allowing bacterial growth.

3. Don’t douche

The presence of any bacteria in the urinary tract does not mean the presence of infection; “good” bacteria is present and is important for maintaining a healthy equilibrium. In addition to “bad” bacteria, douching can eliminate this “good” bacteria and change your body’s pH balance. Ultimately this may allow the “bad” bacteria to flourish. The vagina cleans itself via discharge. If you still feel the need to wash up down there, use a pH-balanced formula, like Summers Eve.

4. Switch soaps

Your bubble bath, body wash, and other cleaning products could be the culprit to your UTIs. Use sensitive formulas that are dye- and fragrance-free.

5. Change menstrual pads, tampons, or cups frequently

Low-absorbency pads made of synthetic materials can expose your vulva to bacteria and increase your risk of infection. Using tampons can encourage bacteria to develop faster, so it’s important to change your tampon regularly. Tampons and menstrual cups may increase your risk of getting or worsening a UTI if it’s not positioned correctly. If it pushes on your urethra and traps your urine, bacteria can spread to the bladder. Changing the size or shape of a menstrual cup may help prevent recurrent UTIs.

6. Avoid spermicides

Spermicide is a type of birth control that is inserted into the vagina before sex to kill sperm. Spermicides may cause irritation, removing natural barriers of protection from bacterial invasion (and ultimately infection). Avoiding spermicides while experiencing a UTI is recommended. Additionally, urinating before and immediately after sex can help prevent UTIs.

7. Apply heat

Having a UTI can cause discomfort or pain in the pubic area. Heating pads or hot water bottles can help soothe pain in that area and are easy to use. Applying heat to the pelvic area for about 15 minutes can make a big difference. Making sure the temperature isn’t too hot and that the heat source doesn’t directly touch the skin will prevent any irritation or burning. Taking a warm bath may sound like a logical solution to relieve UTI pain, but most healthcare professionals advise against bubble baths. If you do take a bath, eliminate the soap and suds and limit the amount of time you soak.

8. Hydrate

One of the best home remedies for UTIs is to drink lots of water. Drinking plenty of water helps flush bacteria out of the body. Harvard Health recommends that the average healthy person drink at least four to six cups of water daily.

9. Drink cranberry juice

When bacteria attach to cell walls in the urinary tract, this can cause a urinary tract infection. Proanthocyanidins, which are the active ingredient in cranberry juice, can help prevent bacteria from attaching to urinary tract walls, which could help prevent UTIs. A study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information says that cranberry juice reduces the number of UTIs a person can develop over 12 months.

Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice to treat UTIs is highly debated in the medical community. While drinking the juice might help some people, it may not work for others. It’s ultimately up to each individual to decide whether or not cranberry juice has a place in the treatment of their UTI.

10. Urinate often

Urinating often while experiencing a UTI will help flush bacteria out of the urethra. Resisting the urge to pee can keep bacteria that’s in urine trapped in the bladder, which could make UTIs worse. Urinating before and after sexual intercourse will also help minimize the amount of bacteria that enter the urethra.

11. Eat more garlic

Consuming garlic is a great way to boost your immune system, and garlic is well known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Allicin, one of the compounds in garlic, has antimicrobial properties that have proven to be effective at killing E. coli.

12. Eat less sugar

“Diet can be huge in the prevention of UTI since it is caused by a bacterial infection,” says Sarah Emily Sajdak, DAOM, a doctor of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in New York City. “Bacteria love sugar, so the more sugar you eat, the more you’re feeding the infection.”

13. Supplement with probiotics

Probiotics are supplements of “good” bacteria that help support a healthy gut and immune system. They can help keep harmful bacteria from flourishing and help treat and prevent recurrent urinary tract infections. The probiotic lactobacillus has proven especially effective at UTI prevention for women.

There are many different types of probiotics available for purchase at grocery stores or health food stores. If you’re interested in taking them for UTIs and don’t know which kind to get, speak to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

14. Try herbal remedies

Uva ursi is an herb that has anti-inflammatory, astringent, and urinary antiseptic properties. Uva ursi has shown to be effective at treating and preventing UTIs. It can be purchased from health food stores and should be taken as directed by a nutritionist or healthcare professional.

In addition to uva ursi, Sajdak recommends the following natural supplements to prevent UTIs:

D-mannose is a type of sugar that can help keep bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract wall. Some studies show that taking D-mannose powder with water can help prevent UTIs, especially for people who get them frequently.

All herbal supplements should be taken in consultation with a healthcare professional, as they may interact with other medications you are taking for other indications.

15. Use essential oils with caution

Oregano essential oil is well known for its strong antibacterial properties. Studies have shown that oregano oil can be very effective at killing E.coli, but it should be noted these studies are generally done in vitro—meaning in a lab using scientific techniques, not performed in humans with infections. Lemongrass oil and clove oil may also be a home remedy for UTIs because of their antimicrobial properties, but both have been studied against harmful bacteria in similar experiments as Oregano oil.

It’s important to take care before using essential oils as a treatment. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy advises against ingesting these oils. Instead, essential oils may be safely used topically with a carrier oil or inhaled from a diffuser.

UTI medications

If home remedies aren’t helping your UTI, you may need an over-the-counter or prescription medication. “Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as Advil, Motrin, and Naprosyn [provide] symptom relief,” says David Samadi, MD, the director of men’s health and urologic oncology at St. Francis Hospital in Long Island. “There are also OTC medications such as AZO Urinary Pain Relief or Uristat tablets whose main ingredient is phenazopyridine, which can help reduce irritation in the urinary tract, but it won’t treat the cause.”

Prescription UTI treatment typically involves taking a course of antibiotics, which work by killing bacterial infections within the body. Popular antibiotics for UTIs include amoxicillin, Cipro, and Bactrim.

RELATED: About Amoxicillin | About Cipro | About Bactrim

The number of days that someone will take antibiotics to treat a UTI will vary. It’s imperative to take the entire prescribed dose of any antibiotic, even if you start to feel better. Stopping a course of antibiotics early might not kill all of the bacteria, which could cause antibiotic resistance.

Some people who have recurring UTIs may benefit from antibiotic prophylaxis, a treatment option where antibiotics prevent an infection rather than treat one. The same medications used to treat UTIs can also be used for prevention, though doses will vary. A healthcare professional can determine the proper dosage and form of medication on a case-by-case basis. See this article to learn more about UTI medications.

When to see a doctor for a UTI

“Always go to your primary care physician immediately if there is blood in the urine, if you have a fever, and/or low back pain with your UTI symptoms,” Sajdak advises. “UTIs can move fast, so it’s better to go … sooner than later.”

Although natural remedies can be beneficial for alleviating UTI symptoms and preventing recurrent UTIs, they may not be effective in treating the infection.

“If symptoms still persist after three days then it is time to move on to antibiotics,” says Ivy Branin, ND, a naturopathic doctor in New York City who specializes in women’s health. “I often recommend a patient to see their doctor for a UA (urinary analysis) and a prescription for antibiotics just in case and to fill it if they have no improvement after three days.

Leaving a UTI untreated can cause additional health problems. Bacteria can reach the ureters or kidneys and cause kidney infections. Untreated UTIs during pregnancy can also potentially cause early labor and low birth weight. Seeking treatment for UTI that isn’t going away—or one that keeps coming back—is always a good thing.

Can you treat a urinary tract infection with home remedies?

Always rushing to the bathroom because of a constant need to pee? Does the urine burn on the way out or come with a lower abdomen ache? Uh oh, it might be a urinary tract infection.

Many people will try to relieve their UTI symptoms with self-treatment first, turning to old wives tales or common wisdom. But do home remedies work? Yes and no.

“We always recommend at least giving the physician a call,” Dr. Lauren Giugale, assistant professor at Women’s Center for Bladder and Pelvic Health at Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh, told TODAY. “Treatment depends on the patient.”

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract and get into the bladder. E-coli is the most common cause of infection, Giugale said, but other bacteria can cause a UTI, too.

“For some reason bacteria from the gut got into in the bladder,” she said. “Urinary tract infections are more common in women because of their anatomy.”

They are very common with more than half of all women experiencing one or more in their lifetimes, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Women in menopause or those who use certain spermicides are at higher risk of developing a UTI.

“Usually they’re kind of random,” Giugale said. “Many women throughout their lifetimes will experience one and it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong.”

People who want to skip the doctor’s visit and treat their UTI at home most often turn to cranberry juice or pills to clear up the infection. While people believe the tiny fruit packs a huge healing punch, there’s not much evidence to back it up.

“The data has been mixed and a lot of it actually shows that cranberry doesn’t help,” Giugale said. “But, it’s one of those things that is pretty low risk.”

Some try other home remedies, including taking vitamin C or drinking diluted baking soda. But there’s no data on dosage or if they even work.

“High doses of baking soda might be harmful,” Dr. Christine Greves, an OB-GYN at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Florida, told TODAY.

Drinking it, even diluted, could cause nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. Rare cases of baking soda overdoses can lead to seizures, coma and death — or even stomachs exploding, said Greves.

As for taking vitamin C, people normally urinate most of it out and there’s no proof that it treats a UTI.

While many home remedies have limited or no effect, drinking plenty of water can sometimes help.

“We say the secret to pollution is dilution,” Greves said. “If you are drinking more (water) that results in going to your kidneys, which can in turn hopefully flush out some of those bacteria.”

If people want to try treating their UTI by staying hydrated, taking over the counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen can help alleviate their pain. Warm compresses reduce some UTI discomfort, too. There are some over-the-counter medications specifically to treat UTI pain that numb the urinary tract, but ibuprofen works just as well.

Related

While treating UTIs at home might not be as easy as having a glass of cranberry juice, the experts say women can stop urinary infections from happening. The most basic way to prevent UTIs is to wipe in the right direction after using the toilet — women should always wipe from front to back.

“That’s kind of a common sense thing,” Greves said. “If you wipe from back to front, what if there is fecal material, which has e-coli or other bacteria? They could be introduced to the urinary tract.”

Women also might want to urinate after intercourse.

“We often tell people that, but there’s little specific data,” Giugale said, “that says that those things are going to prevent urinary tract infection.”

However, it’s another low-risk way to lower the chance of getting a UTI. Urinating after sex might help the body dispel some bacteria moved around during intercourse.

“Sometimes there can be e-coli involved in it and the thought is to urinate afterwards,” Greves said.

If UTI symptoms don’t dissipate after a few days or women notice blood in their urine it’s time to contact a doctor. Untreated UTIs can become more severe or spread into the kidneys, which might require treatment with intravenous antibiotics.

“The ultimate thing is there’s a bacterial infection growing and festering,” Greves said, “and they need to talk to their doctor to go on some antibiotic and fight this so it doesn’t spread up into the kidney.”

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bladder infections to catch, especially for women. Most UTIs are caused by bacteria getting into the urinary tract and causing inflammation and pain. “The female anatomy is a set up for infections of the bladders,” explains Sherry A. Ross, MD, a women’s health expert and author of She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women’s Intimate Health. Period. Dr. Sherry explains that because women have a shorter urethra, which is essentially the tube that leads urine from the bladder out of the body, bacteria can enter much more easily than it can through male anatomy. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, women are 30 times more likely to get a UTI than men and more than half of women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime. But as much as knowing you’re not in the minority may be reassuring, it doesn’t take away from the stinging, burning, and needing to rush to the bathroom every 10 minutes feeling you get when you have a bladder infection.

5 natural remedies for UTI relief

“A true UTI needs antibiotics to clear the bacteria responsible for the symptoms and infection,” Dr. Sherry explains, so call your doctor if you’re experiencing UTI symptoms. While you wait for your appointment, though, there are some home remedies you can try to help relieve some of the discomfort.

Avoid foods and beverages that will irritate your bladder

Drinking coffee and alcohol, and eating spicy food or foods with lots of added sugar will irritate the urinary tract. They can decrease the blood flow to the bladder, which will make it harder for your immune system to fight off the infection.

Drink lots of water and empty your bladder often

According to Chicago-based OB/GYN, Jessica Shepherd, MD, drinking lots of water when you are experiencing UTI symptoms can help flush away the bacteria. “Draining your bladder frequently is essential to getting rid of the bacteria,” Dr. Shepherd explains. The more water you drink, the more you’ll have to relieve yourself.

Use a heating pad

Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Sherry both recommend applying heat to your abdomen for relief from UTI cramps or the burning sensation. “A heating pad or hot water bottle over your lower abdomen can help ease some of the discomfort from a UTI,” Dr. Sherry says. If you’re using an electric heating pad, be careful not to fall asleep with it on or leave it on your skin for long periods of time. This can be dangerous and either burn your skin or worse, cause a fire.

Try an herbal remedy

Recent studies have shown that uva ursi plant extract, also known as bearberry, may help combat UTIs through the plant’s antimicrobial properties. However, there can be side effects, and uva ursi can be harmful if not taken properly, so be sure to consult your doctor before trying the supplement.

Avoid vitamin C if you’re already experiencing UTI symptoms

Vitamin C is known to help prevent UTIs by acidifying the urine, which can kill certain bacteria present in the urinary tract. But Dr. Sherry warns if you already have a UTI or are experiencing real symptoms of one, vitamin C will not be effective in killing off bacteria. This is because unless you know the exact bacteria causing the UTI, vitamin C—although helpful—may not be doing enough to kill the infection you’re experiencing.

How to prevent a UTI from striking again

Sick of dealing with urinary tract infections? Really, the best “natural remedy” is simple: just prevent one from striking in the first place! Here’s how:

Drink cranberry juice

Although it has often been thought of as a treatment option, cranberry juice can only help as a preventative measure. “Cranberry juice can be helpful in preventing UTIs by making the urine more acidic and preventing harmful bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder,” Dr. Sherry explains. “An acidic environment in the urine makes bacterial build-up more difficult and reduces your chance of getting a UTI. But even with this information, studies have conflicting evidence about cranberries being a reliable source for prevention.” So if you’re prone to UTIs, it won’t hurt to drink unsweetened cranberry juice. But it’s definitely not the UTI cure-all it has always been thought to be.

Practice good hygiene after sex and ask your partner to, too

“Overall health with increased water intake and exercise is the best way to improve health and help with decreasing UTIs,” Dr. Shepherd shares. This includes good hygiene and being diligent about cleaning all of your lady parts. And make sure your partner does, too. “Bacteria from sexual intercourse is one of the most common ways women can get a UTI,” Dr. Shepherd explains.

Limit antibiotic use

Although it can’t always be avoided, frequent antibiotic use can actually cause more harm than good and lead to UTIs. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, which can allow unwanted bacteria to enter the urethra. When fighting off illness, antibiotics can wipe out good as well as bad bacteria, which can leave you more prone to infection. Dr. Sherry recommends taking a daily probiotic to help repopulate the good bacteria in your body, but more research is needed to test its effectiveness in treating UTIs.

Avoid feminine hygiene products with scents and chemicals

“Using feminine products that have perfumes and other irritating chemicals can introduce disruptive bacteria into your body,” Dr. Sherry says. Even more so, Dr. Sherry stresses that if you’re prone to UTIs, any products that will allow unwanted bacteria to enter your body should be avoided. “Avoid diaphragms, vaginal sponges, diva cups, and sex toys if you’re prone to UTIs,” she advises.

Wipe front to back

“Always remember to wipe ‘front to back’ to avoid bringing unwanted bacteria from the anus to the vaginal area,” Dr. Sherry says. A rule as simple as this make all the difference between frequent UTIs and not getting any.

Stay hydrated

“Drinking a lot of water will help keep unwanted bacteria moving out of your body,” Dr. Sherry says. “And, don’t hold in your urine for long periods of time—a general rule of thumb is to urinate every two to three hours or when you first feel the urge.”

5 Home Remedies For UTIs

Looking for home remedies to treat your UTI? You’ve come to the right place!  Read below to learn about urinary tract infection home remedies and get rid of that burning urine feeling for good!  (And stop them from happening in the first place!)

NAFC recently conducted a survey that asked people how they were dealing with urological conditions during the pandemic. A surprising finding was that many of you reported an increase in urinary tract infections. While we don’t know why more frequent UTIs are happening – stress, a decrease in personal grooming, or poor diet choices may all be culprits – we do realize that urinary tract infections can be annoying, painful, and can cause an increase in incontinence or bladder leaks.

Urinary tract infections are caused by foreign bacteria entering into the urine tract, usually from the bowel, and they can happen to both men and women. In fact, about 60% of women and 12% of men will have at least one UTI in their lifetime.  If you’ve ever had one, you will recognize the symptoms immediately:  burning urine sensations when you pee, cramping, frequent trips to the bathroom, strong-smelling pee that may appear cloudy or dark, and a feeling of not quite being able to empty your bladder are all hallmark symptoms of UTIs. UTI’s are also annoying and frustrating, especially if they happen to you often. And, while the standard treatment for a UTI is pretty commonplace (an antibiotic usually clears it up in a few days), an in-person visit with your doctor to get that diagnosis and antibiotic prescription may not exactly be high on your list of things to do right now.

(Learn more about UTIs and what causes them here.)

While antibiotics are the fastest and most recommended way to treat urinary tract infections, they sometimes don’t work. You may also be wary of taking an antibiotic due to certain risks that accompany that treatment. Luckily, there are some great home remedies for urine infections you can try to treat the condition.

BELOW ARE SOME OF THE BEST NATURAL HOME REMEDIES FOR UTIS YOU CAN TRY Right From Home.

  • DRINK LOTS OF WATER.

Drinking lots of water, and emptying your bladder when you need to, will help you flush harmful bacteria from your system. You may be hesitant to drink water due to the burning sensation you may have when peeing, but trust us on this – getting in your recommended 8 glasses a day will do you a world of good. You can also incorporate water-based foods – watermelon, oranges, lettuce, soups and broths are all great examples of foods that have high water content. Be sure to drink water throughout the day – if you wait until you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. (Try our tips for drinking more water here.)

  • TRY DRINKING SOME UNSWEETENED CRANBERRY JUICE.

While the research is a bit unclear, cranberries have been used as a prevention of UTI for generations. Studies have shown that cranberries actually make it harder for the bacteria that cause UTIs to stick to the urinary tract walls. So, while not really a remedy, if you frequently get UTIs, it might be worth drinking a couple of glasses of unsweetened cranberry juice, or snacking on the actual fruit (whole or dried). (Note:  the “unsweetened” is key here – consuming juices with added sugars may only make your urinary tract infection worse.)

  • DON’T “HOLD IT”.

We all get busy, but holding off going to the bathroom gives any bacteria that may already be in your bladder the chance to grow and multiply, potentially resulting in infection (or keeping one that you already have alive and well). Drink lots of water and when you have to go, go. Another good prevention measure – be sure to pee after you’ve had sexual intercourse to wash away any harmful bacteria and prevent it from spreading.

  • TRY TAKING A PROBIOTIC.

Introducing a probiotic to your system may help to replenish the naturally occurring, healthy bacteria that live in the gut.  It is thought that probiotics may prevent harmful bacteria from attaching to the urinary tract cells, and may also lower the urine Ph, making it less hospitable to harmful bacteria. And, if you have taken an antibiotic to treat a UTI, taking a probiotic is a great way to build up the healthy bacteria that may have been killed during your course of treatment. Probiotics are found in supplement form (often a capsule), or they occur naturally in some types of food, including certain yogurts, kombucha, or kefir.

  • EAT GARLIC.

It turns out that garlic doesn’t just ward off vampires. A recent study showed that garlic extract may be effective in reducing the bacteria that cause UTIs.

  • ADD VITAMIN C TO YOUR DIET.

Not only does vitamin C help strengthen your immune system, but it may also acidify your urine, which limits the growth of some bacteria and may prevent urinary tract infections from occurring. Just be careful of eating too many acidic foods when you have a UTI, as they can potentially irritate your bladder, which may only make your UTI symptoms worse.

  • AVOID BLADDER IRRITATING FOODS WHEN YOU HAVE A UTI.

Certain foods are known bladder irritants – citrus or very acidic foods, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol – these can all irritate the bladder, leading to bladder leaks. And, if you currently have a UTI, they may affect you even more. Try to watch out for these common bladder irritants to prevent further irritation to your bladder and UTI.

  • WIPE FROM FRONT TO BACK.

This one is more about prevention. Because many UTIs develop from the spread of bacteria from the rectum, it’s important to pay attention to how you wipe both after a bowel movement and after urinating.  Always wipe from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria to the urethra, and on to the urinary tract.

HOW TO EASE THE PAIN OF A UTI

If you’re experiencing pain due to a urinary tract infection, the following may help ease it until you’re able to treat and get rid of the UTI:

  • WEAR LOOSE CLOTHING.

Your goal here is to prevent moisture from accumulating in the pelvic region, which could make your infection worse. Wearing loose clothing, preferably made from cotton or other natural materials will help keep moisture at bay and will help you feel more comfortable.

  • APPLY HEAT.

Use a heating pad, a warm washcloth, or a hot water bottle to apply heat to your bladder or pelvic area if you’re feeling pain or discomfort there from your UTI. You may also wish to take a warm bath to help relieve any pain and to help your muscles relax.

  • TAKE AN OTC PAIN RELIEVER

Over-the-counter pain medications can temporarily relieve pain caused by a UTI. Use caution here, and always speak with a doctor first, as some UTIs can turn into kidney infections. In these cases, patients should avoid taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which could make the infection worse.

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR FOR YOUR UTI

If your symptoms persist beyond a few days with no sign of improvement, or if your infection keeps recurring, it’s best to see a doctor. While many home remedies may ease symptoms if they persist your doctor will be able to determine the cause and prescribe a course of antibiotics that should help take care of your UTI right away and prevent it from leading to a worsening condition or infection.

8 Natural Ways to Treat UTIs, and What Actually Works

Want a fast fact to bust out at your next party? Forty percent of women will get a urinary tract infection (UTI) at some point in their lives. Bono MJ, et al. (2018). Urinary tract infection. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK470195/ Fun, right? OK, nothing involving urine and tracts will ever be a particularly fun point of conversation, but it’s worth knowing the ins and outs of this incredibly common ailment. Especially since 20 percent of women who get a UTI will get another one.

Most of the time, UTIs require a treatment of antibiotics to get the bugs out of your system. This is a perfectly effective treatment, and it usually takes care of the infection in a few days. But, if you’d rather not use antibiotics, since there’s some concern about creating antibiotic-resistant strains of the infection, what options do you have? I spoke to some experts to find out if there are any natural cures for a UTI and if all that talk about cranberry juice really lives up to the hype.

What exactly is a UTI?

Unsurprisingly, a UTI is an infection of the urinary tract. Bacteria has gotten into the urinary tract system, which is normally sterile. To put it in less pleasant terms, when material from the lower intestine gets into your urethra, it causes a bladder infection.

Though that sounds horrid, it’s not uncommon. Sometimes, it can be caused by a lack of proper hygiene, but most of the time it occurs from sex, using a diaphragm, or just being a woman. The Mayo Clinic lists “female anatomy” as a risk factor for the illness. So, if you’re simply walking around town with a vagina, you very well might get a UTI.

The infection itself might be caused by the E. coli bacteria, which goes up the urethra. Sometimes, it hangs out in this urinary hallway without infecting anywhere else. More often, the bacteria gets into the bladder, causing frequent painful peeing, discharges, blood in your urine, and pelvic discomfort. It’s not a good time, but a bladder infection is rarely serious, especially if you get treatment right away.

How can you cure a UTI?

For all the anti-antibiotic people out there, I have bad news. You can’t cure the infection with natural remedies. Sorry. Though there are natural solutions that might help prevent UTI (which I’ll explain in just a bit), all the unsweetened cranberry juice in the world won’t actually help you. In fact, in the study “Cranberry juice fails to prevent recurrent urinary tract infection,” the tart fruit had the exact same effect as a placebo in recurrent UTIs. Barbosa-Cesnik C, et al. (2011). Cranberry juice fails to prevent recurrent urinary tract infection: Results from a randomized placebo-controlled trial. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1093/cid/ciq073Though you probably guessed that from the study title.

The only way to totally get rid of a UTI is with antibiotics. If you’re experiencing symptoms, it’s best to get to the doctor quickly. They’ll test your urine, and if it’s indeed a UTI, you’ll get a weeklong course of antibiotics. Usually, your symptoms go away in a few days and you can enjoy pain-free peeing again. But you must continue your antibiotics until you’ve completed the prescription.

Do I really have to see a doctor for a UTI?

It may seem unnecessary to see a doctor for such a common illness. Why not just let it go and treat it on your own? Dr. Elizabeth Rice, a licensed naturopathic doctor and primary care physician at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, has tips for natural treatments, but says you always have to be careful. “A partially treated or mistreated UTI can quickly become a serious condition known as pyelonephritis (infection of the kidney), so care must always be taken when treating UTIs naturally.”

If you’re just starting to feel or see potential UTI symptoms, you can try a few natural remedies to try to flush out the bacteria and reduce inflammation before the infection really takes hold, Rice says. Increase your intake of fluids to help flush the bladder. But if the symptoms persist more than a day, or get worse, you have to go to the doctor.

Going to the doctor may be a bit annoying, but a UTI that morphs into a kidney infection is way worse than an afternoon in the waiting room. Kidney infections can lead to potentially life-threatening sepsis or permanent kidney damage. Seeing a doctor to prescribe antibiotics may ultimately help you avoid a lifetime of medical complications.

You know your body best, so listen to it. You may not run to the doctor after one weird-feeling pee. If you start to have mild symptoms, here are a few natural choices that may help you out.

The lowdown on natural treatments

D-mannose

D-mannose is a supplement made from a glucose-like sugar that you can find online or in health food stores. “D-mannose is most helpful at preventing E. coli from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract,” says Rice. D-mannose in recurrent urinary tract infections. (2014). https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01808755 “If taken with a lot of water, this can effectively flush out the bacteria that is causing the infection.”

Rice often tells patients to take 500 milligrams every two to three hours when experiencing symptoms; however, the best dose is individual. You can find more guidelines here, and when in doubt, a good rule of thumb is to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Be sure to drink lots of water throughout the day to help the D-mannose remove the bacteria. Again, if the symptoms persist more than 24 hours or get worse, get yourself to the doctor.

D-mannose isn’t recommended for those with diabetes, and if you’re taking other medications, you need to talk to a doctor before starting this treatment. Diarrhea is a common side effect.

Marshmallow

Althaea officinalis, otherwise known as Marshmallow, is an anti-inflammatory herb widely available in powdered, supplement, and tea form. “Althaea officinalis is a demulcent herb that can soothe and coat the lining of the urinary tract to help decrease inflammation,” says Rice. “Make a strong tea and sip throughout the day.”

Unfortunately, this herb won’t cure a UTI, but it can ease some of the symptoms. Even more unfortunately, a bag of fluffy marshmallows won’t do anything to help a UTI, but they will taste delicious.

Uva-ursi (or bear berries)

“Some research indicates that uva-ursi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi) — also known as “bear berries” because bears like to eat them —is an effective herb for treating UTIs,” says Erin Stair, MD, MPH, and founder of Blooming Wellness. The plant (also found in supplement form) has diuretic properties, which could help you pee out the bacteria before it does any harm. But uva-ursi is more than a natural water pill.

“The whole plant has many active substances, such as arbutin (which gets converted to hydroquinone and acts as an antimicrobial agent), flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, resin, gallic and egallic acid,” says Stair. Because uva-ursi has such potent ingredients, you need to take it carefully.

Stair cautions that the supplement hasn’t been well studied in humans yet and shouldn’t be used if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, long-term use of hydroquinone may affect the liver and kidneys. New Jersey Department of Health. Hazardous substance fact sheet: hydroquinone. (2002). https://nj.gov/health/eoh/rtkweb/documents/fs/1019.pdf

So, while uva-ursi has potential to be fairly powerful, it also carries risks. It may or may not treat a UTI, and it may or may not hurt your liver. In this case, if you’re able to take antibiotics, the traditional medical route seems to be a safer option.

Just add water

With any of these supplements, experts recommend that you should greatly increase your water intake. Basically, you’re trying to flush out those gross little E. coli jerks, and the best way to do that is through peeing. And there’s no easier way to pee than by drinking plenty of water.

Also, upping your water intake can be a good barometer of infection. If you pee with little discomfort, keep drinking water and taking supplements, and you might be able to flush it out on your own. If your pee starts to hurt, burn, or show signs of blood, you know it’s time to see a doctor.

How to prevent bladder infections

Though natural remedies aren’t guaranteed to get rid of early UTI symptoms, there are some natural ways to discourage UTIs from forming in the first place.

Now, before we get into prevention, please remember: If you’re a woman, you’ve got a high chance of a UTI. That doesn’t mean you’re gross or doing anything wrong. You happen to have a vagina and that’s just the way it goes.

Still, you can reduce your chances of infection, and most of the methods are free and easy.

Pee after sex

There’s a bit of a myth that an increased number of sexual partners leads to an increased risk of UTI. But a study from the University of Michigan found no connection between number of partners and UTIs. Foxman B, et al. (1990). Health behavior and urinary tract infection in college-aged women. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2324774 Instead, they found that peeing after sex was way more helpful in preventing UTIs than limiting your sexual partners.

When you urinate, the pee itself flushes out your urethra. So, that E. coli gets washed away before it gets a chance to make your life miserable. Though it seems a like a tiny, insignificant thing, a quick pee after sex can keep you from days of painful urinations.

Wipe from the front to the back

Don’t draw germs from your rectal area toward your vagina and urethra. Every time you wipe, it should be from the urinary area toward the rectum.

Don’t use a diaphragm

That same study from the University of Michigan also found that people who used diaphragms were twice as likely to get UTIs. Foxman B, et al. (1990). Health behavior and urinary tract infection in college-aged women. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2324774 This doesn’t mean diaphragms are off the table, but be very careful with keeping them clean. Any tiny bit of bacteria can cause a vaginal or urinary infection. Alternately, you can consider switching your method of birth control to decrease the risk of UTIs.

Don’t have sex

The University of Michigan study found that UTIs significantly increased with sexual intercourse. Foxman B, et al. (1990). Health behavior and urinary tract infection in college-aged women. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2324774 So if you’ve had trouble with recurring UTIs or think you might have an infection, it may be best to be less sexually active for a bit. This doesn’t mean abstaining long term to avoid a UTI, but reducing intercourse right after a UTI may decrease your odds of recurrence.

Make your pee acidic

The pH balance of your pee might have a significant effect on UTI recurrence. Dr. Eugene Charles, director of The Applied Kinesiology Center of New York, says that maintaining an acidic pH of the urinary tract may prevent bacteria from growing.

A study from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that acidic pee restricted bacterial growth. Shields-Cutler RR, et al. (2015). Human urinary composition controls antibacterial activity of siderocalin. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4481200/Unfortunately, trying to make your pee acidic after you already have a UTI won’t help. It’s too little, too late. But, if your urine stays acidic, it could stop E. coli from growing in the first place, thereby stopping recurring infections.

And no, it’s not like you’ll have to start peeing straight-up acid. In fact, the study found that urine that was just slightly more acidic than water, which is neutral on the pH scale, was most effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria.

How do you make your urine more acidic? “This is best accomplished through a daily tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a tincture of cranberry, which should be incredibly sour,” says Charles. “Otherwise, you are drinking predominately sugar, which propagates UTIs.”

Thankfully, while nothing can ensure that a UTI won’t strike, there are some natural ways to help keep them at bay. But once they hit, it’s best to go with antibiotics, so you can feel better right away and avoid more damaging infections. In the meantime, drink water, take a little apple cider vinegar, and remember to pee after sex.

How to repair an Electrolux refrigerator with your own hands

Change the thermostat on the Electrolux refrigerator

Now we will talk about refrigerators with a crying defrost system and what problems you can fix with your own hands. If you read the title of the paragraph, you probably realized that we are talking about replacing the thermostat. Before replacing the thermostat, you need to find out whether it is worth doing, that is, first, you need to diagnose the malfunction. Many users, when they see that their refrigerator does not turn off, make a big mistake, I think that the reason for this can only be the thermostat → in most cases it is not. Now let’s see what exactly indicates the failure of this part

  • The refrigerator does not turn off → I specifically wrote this paragraph first. It is important to understand that as long as there is no set temperature in the refrigerating chamber, the relay will never turn off the compressor in its life. Of course, it happens that the spring on the thermostat weakens and this behavior can be the result, but this happens extremely rarely. If the refrigerator does not turn off, then this mostly indicates that there has been a leak of freon or a clogged capillary tube
  • The refrigerator does not turn on → in this case, the temperature switch must be checked. Usually, freon comes out of the bellows tube, as a result, the spring can press the accordion unhindered. It is necessary to write a whole article about the operation of the thermostat, so I will not delve into its work. Below is a video in which I tell you how to bridge the contacts of the thermostat in order to check not only it, but also the engine, as well as the motor start relay
  • The refrigerator costs a very long time → again, this is due to the bellows tube, it happens when the gas does not completely come out of it.Another culprit for this behavior may be the thermostat mechanism itself, that is, marriage
  • The refrigerator turns on for a few seconds → very rarely, but it happens. In general, the problem is in loose contacts, the plate usually weakens, which closes the contacts

Now let’s see a video on how to close the contacts on the thermostat to check it

In this video, I showed the easiest and most effective way to check the thermostat.Further I will talk about the work of this part, that is, what functions it performs and with the help of which it turns off the compressor

The principle of operation of the thermostat in the refrigerator

Imagine a light switch, thanks to it, the light can be turned off, that is, you press it and the light goes out. The temperature switch also works in the same way, only for the place of your hand, the bellows presses on the switch, this is such an accordion into which freon is pumped. From this accordion, a tube comes out, which is attached to the freezer evaporator, thanks to this bellows tube, under the influence of cold, the accordion narrows or expands. Now look at the photo below

Internal circuit of the thermostat

In the thermostat, there is a rigid spring that presses on the bellows (accordion), if the refrigerator has reached the desired temperature, the freon inside the bellows tube narrows, thereby in the accordion, the gas pressure also decreases, that is, it weakens. As a result, the main spring can press on the contacts so that they work and open them. This is the answer to the question why the refrigerator does not turn on, that is, if the gas comes out of the bellows tube, then the mechanism itself will open the contacts.I think I have explained all the nuances in sufficient detail. Now you can go to the leakage of Freon

Freon leak in two-compartment refrigerator Electrolux

Everything that I will say in this paragraph will mainly concern refrigerators with a crying defrost system. The first thing we need to do is to make the correct diagnostics, that is, to see if the freon really came out of the system or not. To do this, I picked up the 2 most popular questions and now I will try to answer them in detail

I have an Electrolux refrigerator, it stopped turning off a week ago.On the advice of friends and girlfriends, I changed the thermostat. But as a result, nothing happened, the compressor both worked and works without shutting down. On the back wall in the refrigerator compartment, in the right corner, a pile of ice has accumulated, and the rest of the area is practically not frozen. Tell me what you need to turn on the thermostat so that this infection starts to turn off

Even if you twirl something, the refrigerator is unlikely to work correctly. You have listed almost all the symptoms, refrigerant leaks from the system. To this you can add the following, behind the refrigerator there is a condenser, you can see the photo below, you need to touch it, if it is all cold, then we are talking about a freon leak or a clogged capillary. In order to be sure of my predictions exactly, we need to turn off the refrigerator and completely defrost it. Before turning on, put an outdoor thermometer in the refrigerator, turn on the unit for 2-2.5 hours, after this time, look at the temperature on the thermometer, the refrigerator should work without food.If the temperature is higher than 5-6 about C, then this indicates that it is necessary to call the master and insert the crying evaporator

Please tell me, in the Electrolux refrigerator, the upper compartment, where the main products are located, has ceased to cool, but the freezer began to bludgeon like crazy, that is, the products turned to stone. As far as I understand, there was a leak, I have a question, can I fill this refrigerator with my own hands. In what container is it better to pour it and how can I then pour freon into the motor

No need to laugh, such questions are asked very often.Even more often they come to my workshop with a glass or a medicine bottle and ask me to pour out a little freon. Guys, such a procedure can only be performed by a master who has a special tool. A refrigerant is a gaseous liquid that is filled with a variety of devices and it is simply unrealistic to pour it from a glass. You correctly decided that there was a freon leak. Here one more fact must be taken into account, if the freon came out, then it is necessary to determine the place where it did it, then eliminate the leak and only then refuel the refrigerator. The best way to fix leaks in such units is to install a crying evaporator. You can see how this is done in the video below. A similar procedure can be done in almost all refrigerators with a crying defrosting system, that is, which model and which brand does not matter. The only condition is that the freezer is on the bottom

Watch the video how to fix a leak in a two-compartment refrigerator

One more thing must be added to all this.I am often asked to simply reload the system, I make a 70% refusal. Understand in most cases, in order for the refrigerator to continue working, it is not enough to fill in freon. Here you need to understand that the cold disappears for several reasons

  1. Freon leakage → sometimes 70%
  2. Clogged capillary → this breakdown accounts for 20%
  3. Clogged filter → this reason generally occurs in 5%
  4. Incorrect operation of the thermostat → I do not enter this as a percentage, since we are talking about a leak

In general, if you see ice freezing or droplets appear on the back wall and the compressor is constantly running, then 70 percent, you need to prepare for the expensive procedure of installing a crying evaporator. Do not believe those who will tell you that we will refuel and everything will be ok, in most cases it is not. Better to play it safe and do as shown in the video above

Repair of the Electrolux Nou Frost refrigerator

Freon leakage in refrigerators with such a defrosting system is extremely rare, and most of the malfunctions are associated with automation and electronics. You should understand that No Frost, in all brands, is practically no different. The only difference is in the control system, and the principle of operation of the units is absolutely the same.In general, here, it is important to understand what needs to be checked. Below you can watch a video in which, I am talking about the system itself, you do not need to pay attention to the brand of the refrigerator

Watch the video of how Know Frost

works

Now you can start discussing these questions, which are most often asked to me in the workshop and on my channel. It will be about why the cold disappears in the refrigerator compartment, and there is also a question about the leakage of Freon

The Electrolux Nou Frost refrigerator has served faithfully for more than 7 years, but the other day they noticed that it stopped turning off, and it became much warmer in the compartment where the main products are stored. The freezer seems to be working fine, at least the food is still frozen. They called the master, he said that it was necessary to refill the freon. I would agree, but I heard that in Nou Frost, there are no gas leaks at all

Yes indeed, in such units, the refrigerant leaves the system extremely rarely, but it happens. In your case, you need to do the following. Unplug the refrigerator from the outlet, open the doors to both chambers, and leave it to defrost for three days. After that, turn it on, within two to three hours it should turn off, if this does not happen, then you can really think about a leak. If the engine starts to shut down and the unit starts to operate normally, then a leak is out of the question. Most likely this behavior is more related to the malfunctioning of the defrost heater, the culprit may be the heater itself, the defrost sensor or the hot-melt fuse → all these parts are on the freezer evaporator

Can you please tell me, I recently bought an Electrolux Nou Frost refrigerator, but after a month of use, there is no cold and no frost in it, that is, both cameras stopped working. We watched a lot of YouTube videos, including yours. We removed the front cover in the freezer, in general we got to the freezer evaporator, and, oddly enough, there is no ice on it at all. On the evaporator, there is a slight frosting of the tube, into which a thin tube is inserted, most likely a capillary. Tell us we can do something with our own hands. We live in a village, warranty services are far away, the refrigerator will have to be transported to Barnaul, and this is 200 km

It is unlikely that you can do something yourself. The fact is that most likely, the capillary tube clogged, on Electrolux No Frost refrigerators, this malfunction is a frequent reason for this behavior. Considering that the unit is new, then a clogged capillary or filter, this is the most likely reason that the refrigerator does not freeze. In general, resolve the issue with the service department

After 5 years of using the Electrolux No Frost refrigerator, there was a problem with the upper chamber. In general, the upper chamber does not cool, all borscht and soups are sour, and the freezer, on the contrary, works normally. They removed the cover of the freezer evaporator, there is no ice, everything is clean like a cat’s, you know what. The most interesting thing is that the compressor works in 20/20 mode, that is, it costs 20 minutes and works for 20 minutes. Where to dig I don’t understand

Digging, I think nothing is needed. Here you just need to check the sensors, the approximate location of which, you can see in the photo below.

Photo of the location of sensors in the refrigerator Electrolux

In order to check the sensor, you need to measure its resistance, at room temperature it will be about 3 kOhm.Below you can see the graph of the change in the resistance of the sensor, when the temperature changes

Photo of the table of resistance of temperature sensors for the Electrolux

refrigerator

I don’t remember exactly, but in my opinion all sensors have the same resistance and are suitable from a brand such as Kandy, there is also about the same resistance. In general, if frost or cold has disappeared in one of the chambers, then first of all you need to check the sensors, then the defrost heating element, and only after that, sin on freon leakage.

Electrolux refrigerator turns on for a few seconds

This behavior of the compressor may be due to several reasons. The most important breakdown is associated with the engine, although many immediately sin on the relay or thermostat. At the moment, in modern two-compartment refrigerators, there are such relays that they very rarely fail. Of course, a posistor can crumble, this is such a thermoelement inside the relay, well, in my practice, such cases were rare. There have been cases associated with a thermostat, this applies to refrigerators with a mechanical control system. In general, on the thermostat, there is a plate that closes the contacts, it sometimes weakens and as a result the contacts do not fit tightly to each other, it also happens that the mechanism of the thermostat itself sticks and, as a result, the effect may be the same. In general, if the engine on your refrigerator starts up for a few seconds and then turns off, then with a probability of 95%, it is the engine that is to blame

Each [REFLECTION] section is responsible for a specific type of vehicle. [REFLECTION1] – for cars with metallic paint, such as Banshee, or Cavalcade (MetallicAmount is available only for them!).[REFLECTION2] – for taxis and police cars. [REFLECTION3] – for many old cars.

ReflectionFront = (0..10) The size of the reflections from chrome car parts when you look at others. This parameter, together with ReflectionSide , allows you to simulate the behavior of light on a surface (Fresnelequations, Fresnelreflection) – when looking at a surface from a high angle, reflections are more noticeable than those you are looking at.
ReflectionSide = (0..10) The size of the reflections on chrome parts when you look at them from a high angle. MetallicAmount = (0..10) the size of the metallic sheen on the surface (only for [REFLECTION1]).

AdditionalConfigFile = enbseries2.ini – if the file exists, the program will take all parameters from it, instead of enbseries.ini by default. This is very convenient for quickly testing the settings of other users, since you can change selectively, but not everything.
UseEffect = (false / true) – if you put true then ENB Series will turn on automatically with the start of the game, if false then it will turn on only after pressing hot keys.
CyclicConfigReadingi> = (false / true) – if this parameter is enabled then every five seconds ENB will be updated according to changes in the file enbseries.ini .
ForceNVidiaCardi> = (false / true) – this parameter should be enabled only if you have a video card from nVidia
ForceNVidiaCapsi> = (false / true) – mere mortals can pass by, as for specialists on shaders, if you have a video card nVidia and you have adapted shaders DX10 for GTA4 , then you can place them in the shaders folder and enable this parameter.

ForceDisplaySize = (false / true) – If the game does not support your resolution, then enable this parameter, and enter your resolution in the points: DisplayWidth = () – Width , DisplayHeight = ( ) – Height . ATTENTION! Choosing a resolution higher than what is supported by your monitor may damage it!
ForceAntialiasing = (false / true) – Force antialiasing.
ForceDisplayRefreshRate = (false / true) – If enabled, then the frequency is taken from this file (line DisplayRefreshRateHz = (60..240) ) If disabled, set by the game.
ForceAnisotropicFiltering = (false / true) – Force anisotropy to be enabled.
MaxAnisotropy = (1..16) – the maximum level of anisotropy, the higher the value, the sharper the textures. Typically, the values are set to 16, 8, 4, 2, since the perception of differences in the result is non-linear.A value of 16 can give excessive sharpness for textures with sharply marked lines, sometimes it is better to use a value of 8. This parameter does not significantly affect the speed, however, if the game uses complex algorithms with multiple sampling of textures, such as parallax, motion blur, then the speed can be greatly reduced when high values of this parameter.
AntialiasingQuality = (- 1..2) – antialiasing quality. -1 maximum quality, 2 minimum. It is not recommended to use quality -1 and 0 unless you have a top graphics card.
AntialiasingUpScale = (0.25..1.0) – antialiasing scale. The lower the value, the better the performance, but the picture becomes more blurry.
DisplayRefreshRateHz = (60..240) – monitor refresh rate. ATTENTION! Wrong value can ruin your monitor and graphics card! The standard on Windows XP is 60 Hz, if your monitor supports a higher value, it can set a higher value.
DisplayWidth = () – width resolution. The parameter is active only if ForceDisplaySize is active.
DisplayHeight = () – resolution in height. The parameter is active only if ForceDisplaySize is active.
ReflectionsForceHighPrecision = (false / true) – if enabled, reflections on the transport are calculated more accurately than in the original. That reduces the number of artifacts such as, for example, elongated lines on vehicles.
ReflectionsExtremePrecision = (false / true) – if enabled, reflections on the transport are calculated even more accurately, but only if ReflectionsForceHighPrecision is enabled.

EnableBloom = (false / true) – enables the bloom effect, blurring bright areas of the screen and overlaying the image to simulate strong illumination or luminosity of objects. The effect works fast enough and is not a cause of lags, however, incorrect settings or errors in the drivers can lead to artifacts such as over-illumination of the image. Doesn’t use HDR textures, so compatibility is high.
EnableAmbientOcclusion = (false / true) – enable the effect of screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO mutual shading of close objects) and screen space indirect lighting (SSIL mutual illumination of nearby objects), which refers to next-gen effects, respectively, and the requirements to the video card are very high.Currently it works only on video cards with support for shaders version 3_0. The speed of this effect linearly depends on the screen resolution in terms of the number of pixels, so when activated, do not count on high screen resolutions unless the video card is of the highest price category. In any case, if the speed does not suit you, and the settings of this algorithm with reduced quality do not suit you, reduce the display resolution or disable the effect. This effect has limited compatibility with video cards due to poor quality drivers, as well as incorrect settings for ENBSeries and games for the limited capabilities of some video card models, namely HDR texture antialiasing is not supported by many previous generation video cards, and in some cases even filtering of these textures.
EnableSkyLighting = (false / true) – turns on the glow from the sky. This is a very useful effect that improves the quality of shadows and lighting in the game.
EnableSkyLighting = false:

EnableSkyLighting = true:

Refrigerator repairs can be divided into four main categories:

– Small: for example, replacing a failed thermostat, temperature sensor or starting-protective relay. As a rule, the main units
in such cases, they are in good order, but the control electronics are faulty. The repair may not last long at all and will be relatively inexpensive.
– Medium: from repairing the electrical circuit to restoring malfunctions of the “No Frost” system. In these situations, fault recovery is usually
possible at home and also possible to complete in a short time so that you do not feel discomfort and forget about problems with the refrigerator.
– Difficult: this category includes, for example, repairing an evaporator, replacing a motor-compressor (in fact, the heart of the system), removing a blockage
capillary tube or gas filling. Such repairs will require ample time, spare parts costs and highly skilled
master. Fortunately, in most cases everything can be repaired right at your home – most likely, one visit of a master of
repairing refrigerators at home in Moscow or the Moscow region, and he will try to solve all the problems.

– Capital. This is when the malfunction is so serious that very time-consuming work will be required in specially equipped conditions for
restoring the working capacity of the refrigerator. For example, if you need to rewrite and repair the electronic module (boards
execution-control) – or there is a freon leak in the cooling system in the foamed part of the cabinet – then, most likely, the repair of refrigerators
(Moscow) will be carried out in our in-patient service center.

If you decide to buy a new refrigerator due to the high cost of repairs, or the impossibility of such, we will certainly help you
with the optimal choice according to the characteristics you need.
