Why Does Coffee Make Me Dizzy And Light Headed?

If you’re anything like me, you cannot wait to wake up and grab your favorite cup of morning java to jump-start your day. Also, if you’re like me, you may take a few sips and wind up asking yourself why the room is spinning.

Daily coffee drinkers have probably experienced a bit of dizziness after drinking a cup of Joe at one time or another.  There are a few reasons why coffee makes me dizzy and lightheaded, and the cause is likely behind your woozy reactions as well.

Coffee is a stimulant

A fact we often overlook is that caffeine is a drug,  a stimulant at that. Many of us grab a cup of coffee and treat it like liquid breakfast. Half the time, we are doing this before we put any food in our bellies.

Far too many of us do it, though it’s not a good idea.  The average American coffee drinker downs 3 cups a day, and most do it on an empty stomach within their first hour awake.

Caffeine consumption on an empty stomach will create stomach lining eroding acid and most certainly cause jitters.

Don’t skip breakfast

I know for a fact that coffee makes me dizzy and lightheaded whenever I skip the bagel and down my coffee to become more alert. This act may be a bit counterintuitive, however.

While coffee is indeed a stimulant, it is an adenosine receptor antagonist—the receptor kind of tricks the brain into being alert. Over time, caffeine intake can create a feeling of drowsiness as your body produces more adenosine in response.

As you begin to build up a resistance to the inhibitor, you’ll need more coffee to feel alert. When this occurs, I, of course, want to drink more coffee. As my intake increases, I may drink it without food, and soon my coffee makes me dizzy and lightheaded once again.

Is the caffeine making you dizzy?

In a word, yes. Like most stimulants, caffeine reduces blood flow to the brain. Ingesting coffee before you eat or in large quantities can result in the giddy, jittery, or woozy side effects often associated with coffee drinking.   

When coffee makes me dizzy or lightheaded nowadays, I try to ask myself why. If I retrace my steps, I can often find the culprit, which helps me reduce incidents of grogginess in the future.

If you find coffee making you jittery far more often than you would like, do what I do and ask yourself the following questions.

Am I drinking too much a day?

The MayoClinic has advised against ingesting large quantities of coffee, stating that up to 400 mg (roughly 4 cups) a day appears safe. Drinking more than this can create a ton of side effects, including a higher incidence of dizziness. The same goes for energy drinks. The effects of caffeine can include insomnia, nervousness, irritability, high blood pressure, and the dreaded shakes that stem from becoming lightheaded.

Did I drink enough water? 

Coffee is not only a stimulant but is a diuretic as well. It causes water and electrolyte loss. Whenever coffee makes me dizzy and lightheaded, I grab a glass of water or water bottle and chug. Increasing my water volume keeps me from becoming dehydrated and eventually reduces my tremors.

Have I eaten breakfast?

A stated previously, food intake is important. Not eating an adequate breakfast before taking that espresso shot could be why your heart is racing, and the room is spinning. I find simply getting a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit is enough to calm my body down eventually.

Caffeine tolerance is a factor

Now, bear in mind some people can drink buckets of coffee and not be affected, while someone else can barely drink half a cup and immediately feel the negative effect of caffeine. The trick here is to ask yourself what you can handle.

Once you discover your tolerance level, try your best not to overdo it. Keeping a watchful eye on the amounts of caffeine you intake can help you enjoy an occasional cup without being thrown off balance.

When I began to look at how and when I indulge, I never had to ask why coffee makes me dizzy and lightheaded. I could look at my habits and self-correct.

As they say, knowledge is power, and knowing what I can do to make sure I can keep on enjoying my morning cup, has enabled me to continue starting my day with a spring in my step!

It can also be artificially created and is sometimes added to food products, including many sodas. Caffeine is the main ingredient in over-the-counter stimulants such as NoDoz and Caffedrine and in most energy drinks, such as Red Bull. Coffee, tea, soda or other caffeine-based stimulants serve as a short-term energy boost and can help you keep alert. Caffeine consumption can, however, have side effects, including dizziness.

How Much Caffeine is Too Much

According to MedlinePlus, a moderate amount of coffee is about three 8-oz. cups per day, or about 250mg of caffeine. That’s the number to keep in mind if you drink tea, soda or other energy drinks. Ten 8-oz. cups of coffee, or more than 750mg of caffeine daily, would be too much. Drugs.com says you can take 100mg about every three to four hours by mouth, which is similar the Mayo Clinic’s recommendation of an upper limit of 600mg per day.

Individuals react differently to caffeine, so you may get dizzy after consuming several drinks totaling 400mg of caffeine, while someone else may feel the effects of a single cup of coffee and a third person could drink the equivalent of six or eight cups of coffee without feeling any significant effects.

Caffeine and Dizziness

Dizziness, which some people describe as light-headedness, giddiness or unsteadiness, can result from motion, injury, medications or illness. Caffeine, like tobacco and other stimulants, actually reduces blood flow to the brain, which is why you may feel dizzy if you ingest a lot of it.

Other Side Effects of Caffeine

People who have cardiovascular conditions, irritable bowel syndrome or an ulcer or who are prone to osteoporosis should use caffeine with caution, if at all. One big side effect of caffeine is insomnia, so stay away from caffeinated substances later in the day.

Caffeine is rarely harmful, but you can overdose on it. Because tolerance to caffeine varies so much, an overdose is identified by the symptoms it produces, rather than by the specific amount consumed. Besides dizziness, the symptoms of an overdose could include difficulty breathing, convulsions, diarrhea, fever, an irregular heartbeat, twitchiness and vomiting. If you think you’ve overdosed on caffeine, don’t attempt to treat it yourself. You should call 911 or the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Drug Interactions

Caffeine can interact with a few other drugs. It may increase the effects—both good and bad—of aspirin, clozapine and theophylline. Clozapine is used to treat schizophrenia and theophylline may be prescribed for asthma and other breathing disorders. Caffeine could make lithium, used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, less effective. Other medications, including Tagamet and oral contraceptives, could enhance the effects of caffeine.

You may drink caffeinated beverages, such as coffee or tea, in the morning because they offer a boost of energy. Because caffeine is a stimulant, you could find yourself lightheaded after drinking coffee — particularly if you drink more than you’re used to.

When you consume caffeinated foods or drinks, it passes quickly to the brain and stimulates the central nervous system, relieving fatigue or drowsiness, especially upon waking. But, you can get too much of a good thing.

Know the Effects

As a central nervous stimulant, caffeine has a variety of effects that can be associated with lightheadedness. Caffeine can increase your heart rate, and depending on your cardiovascular health, this could produce a sensation of lightheadedness or dizziness.

In addition, caffeine has a diuretic effect, meaning is helps rid the body of excess fluids. In some cases, especially if you do not replace fluids by drinking enough water, this may lead to dehydration and lightheadedness.

Dizzy After Coffee

According to Mayo Clinic, up to 400 milligrams per day of caffeine appears to be safe for most adults. Approximately two or three 8-ounce coffee drinks, or three or four cups of tea a day. Don’t forget to check the caffeine content in sodas and energy drinks so you stay within the 400-milligram maximum.

In most cases these guidelines will help you limit lightheadedness and other possible negative side effects that may result from heavy caffeine consumption. According to Michigan State University, side effects of overconsumption of caffeine can include diarrhea, headache, excitement, heart palpitations, insomnia, elevated heart rate, anxiety, tremor, nervousness, muscle tension, ringing in the ears and increased stomach acid production.

Beware Caffeine Addiction and Withdrawal

Caffeine is an addictive substance, and you may develop a dependence if you consume coffee or caffeinated beverages regularly, according to Cleveland Clinic. If you decide to cut back on your caffeine intake or cut out caffeine, you may experience side effects such as restlessness, headaches and anxiety. Many of these withdrawal symptoms, especially anxiety, can trigger sensations of lightheadedness.

To reduce your chances of withdrawal symptoms, Cleveland Clinic suggests that you cut back gradually. Swap out cold caffeinated drinks for water. Alternate between regular and decaf coffee, slowly replacing more of your regular coffees with decaf, over a period of two to three weeks. Cleveland Clinic also cautions that while you might be tempted to take medication for withdrawal headaches, many of these products also contain caffeine.

Consume with Caution

To avoid unpleasant side effects produced by caffeine, carefully control your intake of caffeinated substances. If you enjoy coffee or tea in the morning, consider alternating between caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks. Drink plenty of water to offset the diuretic effects of caffeinated drinks.

If you have been diagnosed with a specific health condition, consult with your doctor about your use of caffeine, especially if you are consuming large quantities or experiencing side effects, such as lightheadedness.

Because of the wide variety of products containing caffeine a
person may be ingesting a considerable amount without being aware of it.
Sources of caffeine include preparations sold to assist in fitness and sporting
performance, energy drinks, soft drinks, various medicines, herbal tonics
containing guarana, as well as coffee, tea and chocolate.

Caffeine overdose can cause nausea, diarrhoea, light-headedness and urinary
frequency. Caffeine withdrawal even after moderate chronic intake may be
associated with headache, nausea, nervousness, reduced alertness and depressed
mood. Symptoms are most acute in the first 20-48 hours but they may persist
for as long as seven days.

Caffeine overdose results in gastrointestinal and cardiorespiratory

A browse through shelves of ingestable products sold to assist in fitness
and sporting performance will reveal that many products contain caffeine,
some in quite large quantities. For some the recommended daily dose includes
more than 500mg of caffeine. Caffeine may be present in these products from
the herbal preparation guarana, as well as being added as pure caffeine.
These products include Thermo Blast IV, Thermo Genesis2
and Energy Booster.

Those who take these preparations without reducing their regular caffeine
intake from other sources may risk developing what has been termed “caffeinism”
which is caused by toxic levels of caffeine. The symptoms include nausea,
diarrhoea, indigestion, irregular heartbeat and respiration, light-headedness,
jitteriness and frequent urination.1 These
symptoms may also develop in those not habitually exposed to caffeine who
ingest a moderate dose.

The busy professional who keeps going on 6-8 cups of strong filter coffee
per day may be at greater risk than the fitness enthusiast of developing
these symptoms. He or she may also experience headache and depressed feelings
from caffeine withdrawal at weekends and when on holiday.

Caffeine from tea, coffee, energy drinks/tablets, guarana

Caffeine is ingested from many sources. In many instances people may
be unaware of its presence. A standard cup of coffee contains 70-180mg caffeine
depending on the strength and method of preparation.1
Instant coffee generally contains less caffeine than coffee prepared from
ground beans. Tea contains 20-35mg per cup.1
Chocolate also contains caffeine.

Some of the approved medicines containing caffeine are the diuretic De
Witt’s tablets and the sleep inhibitors No Doz and No Doz Plus tablets (all
available over-the-counter), and the antimigraine prescription medicines
Ergodryl, Migril and Cafergot tablets. These contain up to 100mg of caffeine
per dosage unit and the recommended daily dose or dose per migraine attack
is up to 600mg. Some soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi and Mountain Dew) and energy
drinks (Proton Guarana Blast, V, Stamina, Big Red, Bull Rush and Top Secret)
contain caffeine in varying amounts.

Guarana is a dietary supplement which contains caffeine and is quite
popular. It is made from a ground extract of the seeds of the plant
Poullinia cupana
var sorbilis which have a natural caffeine
content of around 5%. In some preparations guarana is combined with ginseng.
Guarana tablets or capsules are marketed as herbal tonics which are said
to increase stamina and endurance and have beneficial effects on the nervous
system. A dose unit usually contains the equivalent of about 40mg of active

Caffeine withdrawal may cause headache, nausea, depression

Medical practitioners are advised to question patients presenting with
possible symptoms of caffeine overdose about their ingestion of caffeine
from the less obvious sources such as guarana preparations, dietary supplements
used for fitness and energy drinks, as well as from coffee, tea and chocolate.

An individual withdrawing from caffeine because of a chronic toxic overdose
may experience symptoms of withdrawal including headache, nausea, nervousness,
reduced alertness and depressed mood. These symptoms are most acute during
the first 20-48 hours, but they may persist for as long as 7 days2.
Discontinuation of caffeine at even a moderate intake can lead to these
symptoms. There is also a danger of developing dependence by having that
cup of coffee for the headache caused by caffeine withdrawal.

Coffee can make you feel dizzy because it affects your nervous system. For example, it makes your heart beat faster, your blood pressure rise, and it causes your adrenal glands to release more cortisol and adrenaline.

If you feel dizzy every time you drink coffee, you may have developed a caffeine intolerance or caffeine sensitivity. On the other hand, if you only feel dizzy sometimes after drinking coffee, you may have unintentionally overdosed on caffeine.   

Caffeine Affects the Nervous System

Caffeine is an alkaloid that occurs naturally in cacao, tea, and coffee beans. Therefore, it can be found in coffee, tea, chocolate, soda, energy drinks, medications, and energy supplements.

Although its exact mode of action is not fully understood, we know why it has stimulating effects, which is why it can make you feel dizzy.

Caffeine Makes You Feel More Awake

Studies have found that caffeine is chemically similar to adenosine, a neuromodulator that accumulates in the brain during the day and decreases at night. It works by blocking A1 and A2 adenosine receptors, which makes us feel more alert and awake. 

When caffeine is ingested, it quickly passes through the blood-brain barrier. That’s why you will feel the effects after just 5 to 30 minutes after drinking your morning coffee. 

Caffeine stimulates the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary processes such as heart rate and digestion. This causes increased heart rate, rapid breathing, increased energy, and improved mental function. 

It is also a vasodilator, which means that it opens up blood vessels and increases blood flow.   

It Increases Adrenaline, Cortisol, and Dopamine 

Caffeine elevates cortisol and adrenaline levels – mimicking the body’s natural reaction to stress. This is why too much caffeine can cause anxiety and panic attacks.

Caffeine is thought to trigger certain “feel-good” chemicals, such as dopamine, in the same ways that cocaine and amphetamines do. However, caffeine does not lead to dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens like “classic” drugs, but rather in the prefrontal cortex. 

This is why caffeine addiction is not thought to be a “true” addiction but rather a dependency.  

Positive Effects of Coffee

Although caffeine does affect the nervous system, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. On the contrary, it provides the body with some health benefits, contributing to its overall popularity as a go-to beverage.

Coffee Helps You Feel More Alert

Coffee makes you feel alert for two main reasons. First, coffee increases your heart rate and opens up blood vessels so that more oxygen can travel to your brain. Second, coffee also stimulates the adrenal system, which floods your body with cortisol and adrenaline.   

Coffee Has Pain Relieving Properties

Coffee has mild anti-inflammatory properties because it contains polyphenols, but this is not the only reason why it can provide pain relief. In addition, because caffeine is a vasodilator, it may help alleviate headaches. 

It Can Lead to Increased Productivity

Besides feeling more alert, coffee can also enhance motor and cognitive performance, give your short-term memory a boost and lift your mood. These effects are favorable for learning and increased productivity. 

Why Do I Feel Sick After Drinking Coffee?

Some people feel sick after they drink coffee. Drinking coffee can make you feel nauseous, lightheaded, and shaky. This is because coffee affects your heart, brain, and digestive tract. 

You may feel sick after drinking coffee due to a caffeine intolerance or sensitivity, a caffeine overdose, because you have other health issues that affect your cardiovascular system, or because the acids in coffee irritate your stomach lining.

You May Have a Caffeine Intolerance

Caffeine intolerance (also called caffeine sensitivity) makes some people more sensitive to caffeine than others. As a result, when they drink coffee, they immediately begin to feel the side effects of a caffeine overdose.

For most people, caffeine has a half-life of around 5 hours – which means it is eliminated from the body around 10 hours after consuming it. People with a caffeine intolerance or sensitivity metabolize caffeine much more slowly than those who have caffeine tolerance. 

This means that caffeine remains in a caffeine-sensitive person’s body for much longer, which leads to adverse side effects lasting much longer, too. People with caffeine intolerance may also feel tired and experience a “caffeine crash” without an initial energy boost. 

You May Be Suffering From a Caffeine Overdose

According to the FDA, 400mg (0.014 ounces) of caffeine per day is generally safe for healthy adults – this translates to around three or four cups of brewed coffee a day.

However, the amount may vary for every individual according to weight, sex, tolerance, age, and even genetics.

While smaller doses of caffeine have the positive effects of boosting mood, metabolism, productivity, and cognitive function, more significant amounts can have side effects that feel similar to your body’s natural “fight or flight” response.

This is why drinking too much caffeine makes you feel jittery and nervous and can even lead to a caffeine overdose.

To complicate matters further, the caffeine content in coffee is highly variable. For instance, one “grande” coffee from Starbucks delivers around 330 mg (0.01 ounces) of caffeine, which is almost an adult’s entire recommended daily intake.

In addition, oral contraceptives and pregnancy can slow down caffeine metabolism, and smoking can speed it up.

Symptoms of a Caffeine Overdose

Although coffee overdose is rarely life-threatening unless you have comorbidities, you may experience unpleasant side effects if you exceed what you can tolerate. These include:

  • Dizziness or jitters: Too much caffeine can cause dizziness due to its diuretic effects. Loss of water and electrolytes can cause dehydration, which can make you feel lightheaded.  
  • Insomnia: Because caffeine is a stimulant, it can throw your circadian rhythm off. 
  • Tinnitus: This can be caused by rapid heart rate and decreased blood flow to the brain.
  • Headaches and migraines: Caffeine is a known trigger for migraines.
  • Acid reflux: Since coffee is acidic, it can cause heartburn and indigestion. 
  • Gastric distress: Too much coffee can cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Dehydration: Caffeine’s diuretic effects can cause dehydration.
  • Anxiety. Since caffeine stimulates “stress” hormones, it can cause feelings of anxiety.
  • High blood pressure: Caffeine increases heart rate.

These side effects occur because caffeine stimulates the nervous system and brain. Caffeine also causes an increase in “fight or flight” chemicals, such as adrenaline and cortisol. 

How Serious Is a Caffeine Overdose?

The lethal dose of caffeine for a human is 150 mg (0.005 ounces) per kilogram of body weight per day. However, this can vary significantly from person to person. With coffee, though, the risk of a lethal overdose is small because you would have to drink around 50 to 100 cups of coffee in a day. 

In large enough amounts, caffeine is toxic and can even be lethal if too much is consumed in a short period. But drinking that much coffee would be self-limiting because you are likely to begin vomiting before reaching the required level for toxicity.

The main concern regarding caffeine overdose is not only from coffee but from caffeine in powdered or tablet form. For example, one teaspoon of the powder contains 3,200 mg (0.11 ounces) of caffeine.   

Another concern about unintentional caffeine overdose is when it comes to energy drinks, shots, and supplements. This is because the amount of caffeine in these products is not regulated by the FDA, and many college students combine them with alcohol. 

According to the CDC, people between the ages of 15 to 23 who mix alcohol and caffeine are four times more likely to binge drink than others who do not.

They are also more likely to combine alcohol and caffeine with other drugs. They also may not feel as intoxicated due to the stimulating effects of caffeine, even though they are impaired. 

You May Have Other Health Issues

Studies have not found a connection between caffeine and increased risk of heart disease.

Drinking dark-roasted coffee improves cognitive function and may even protect the brain from developing Alzheimer’s disease. But you should consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions.  

Caffeine is the most consumed psychoactive in the world. Millions of people rely on it for a boost every day. But is drinking coffee dangerous for your health?

Other factors may lead to adverse interactions with caffeine, including alcohol, prescription drugs, or pre-existing conditions. In that case, you should consider the amount of caffeine in your daily regime and consult a health professional.

Adverse Effects on the Body Linked to Caffeine

If you have any pre-existing conditions, excessive caffeine can emphasize those complications further. Too much caffeine can also lead to potential health issues in the future if not appropriately balanced. 

Let’s take a look at some of those issues.

Bladder and Bowel Issues

Coffee has effects on the digestive tract by increasing peristalsis. This causes coffee’s laxative effects, but it can also exacerbate other digestive tract issues such as IBS and GERD.

Caffeine exacerbates GERD because it relaxes the muscles in the esophagus, which allows bile to travel up the throat.

Studies have also found that incontinence among women was more likely to increase if subjects had over 450 mg (0.02 ounces) of caffeine per day.

While coffee is loved by so many because of its ability to wake us up, it can also cause long-term effects in particular people who are already prone to mood and sleep disorders – such as insomnia and generalized anxiety disorder. 


While low amounts of caffeine don’t seem to affect those who don’t have trouble falling or staying asleep, studies have shown that caffeine may decrease the total time spent in REM sleep, which causes us to feel tired upon waking.

It also lengthens the time it takes to fall asleep for individuals who already have a sleep disorder.


Because caffeine makes us feel more awake and alert by stimulating the stress hormone cortisol, it makes sense that an individual with an anxiety disorder may feel even more anxious after drinking coffee.

In the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, caffeine-induced anxiety disorder is listed as its own condition.

Rebound Fatigue

Although coffee’s primary purpose is to boost energy levels, the opposite can also be true. Ironically, caffeine can cause rebound fatigue when it leaves your system.

Caffeine may boost energy levels for a few hours, but participants in studies reported feeling more fatigued the next day.

When deciding if you should stop drinking coffee, an essential factor to consider is how your body reacts to it. If you are sensitive to caffeine or have an existing condition, your doctor may advise you to stop drinking it. 

Cardiovascular Conditions

Coffee can exacerbate cardiovascular issues by increasing heart rate. A rapid heart rate can lead to atrial fibrillation – especially among young individuals who drink high-dose caffeine energy drinks. However, the case studies vary significantly from person to person.

Caffeine has been shown to increase high blood pressure in some individuals, which is a concern because it puts you at risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

High blood pressure damages arteries over time and eventually restricts blood flow to the brain and heart. Interestingly, individuals who are not used to caffeine tend to experience more severe effects.

If you notice any changes in your heart rate or chest pain after consuming caffeine, seek advice from a medical professional.


Although extremely rare, there is a link between caffeine and rhabdomyolysis, a severe condition caused by an infection, muscle damage, trauma, and snake bites. 

It causes damaged muscle fibers to break away and enter the bloodstream, ultimately causing renal failure. Do not drink more than 250 mg (0.009 ounces) of caffeine per day to avoid rhabdomyolysis.

Changes in Brain Structure
