Should You Go on a Rosacea Diet? – Rosacea Center

Passing on foods that trigger flushing and choosing ones that may help fight inflammation could be the recipe for a good rosacea diet. Figuring out the foods that are your personal triggers for rosacea can help you better manage the skin disease and avoid red face flares. Consider keeping a food diary to see if you can identify what foods affect your rosacea.

“Certain foods can cause increased facial flushing by dilating facial blood vessels,” says Jill Waibel, MD, a dermatologist in private practice in Miami. and on volunteer faculty at the University of Miami School of Dermatology. Dr. Waibel says food triggers for rosacea vary from person to person, but notes that alcohol, especially red wine, is a classic trigger that can worsen facial flushing.

While red wine was named the top alcohol trigger, other alcohol products (including beer, bourbon, gin, vodka, and champagne) have also been identified as rosacea triggers, according to data collected by the National Rosacea Society.

Rosacea Diet: Food and Beverage Triggers

Besides alcohol, there’s a long list of food triggers that are generally troublesome for rosacea. The top culprits include:

  • Spicy foods. Examples are hot sauces, vinegar, hot spices, and meat marinades.
  • Hot drinks. Hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee, and tea are suspects. “It’s the temperature of the coffee or tea rather than the caffeine that cause the blushing in patients,” says Waibel. She explains that warmer temperatures cause the blood vessels to dilate and release heat, which then causes the face to turn red.
  • Dairy foods. Yogurt, sour cream, and cheese (except cottage cheese) may need to be removed or curtailed from your diet for rosacea if they tend to be triggers for you.
  • Foods that are high in the chemical histamine. This includes foods pickled with vinegar, citrus fruits (including tomatoes), chocolate and cocoa, nuts, beans, and legumes.

According to the International Rosacea Foundation, high calorie carbohydrate foods, like sugar, pasta, and bread, can be triggers for rosacea as well.

Waibel says dermatologists recommend that people avoid obvious triggers in their rosacea diet, but it’s not necessary to completely deprive yourself. “We have very effective treatments for rosacea so patients may enjoy a healthful glass of wine or cheese in their daily lives.” She adds that laser and light therapy are very effective treatments for rosacea, and topical and oral treatments are available as well.

Foods to Add to Your Diet for Rosacea

“Any foods that decrease inflammation [redness, swelling, and heat] may improve rosacea,” Waibel says. She notes that foods with omega-3 fatty acids such as enriched eggs, flaxseed oil, and cod liver oil supplements have anti-inflammatory effects.

Here are more food suggestions from the American Dietetic Association that may help fight inflammation:

  • Whole grains, such as oatmeal and brown rice
  • Nuts, including walnuts, almonds, and pistachios
  • Fatty fish, like salmon, tuna, and mackerel
  • Berries

“Blueberries and other berries are excellent sources of natural antioxidants and contribute to the overall health of skin and all organs,” says Waibel. They also help fight sun damage. “Generally fruits and vegetables benefit the skin by providing optimal health and keeping medical issues controlled. Vitamin A (found in carrots) helps clear acne and keeps skin healthy,” she adds.

Hydrochloric acid and vitamin B complex have been reported to improve rosacea symptoms in people with low stomach acid, but talk to your doctor before trying this. Some people also tout the benefits of probiotics for rosacea. “There are no studies at this time indicating that hydrochloric acid supplements or probiotics help rosacea — stay tuned, we are learning more every day,” Waibel says.

Top 7 foods to avoid if you have Rosacea

5. Avoid: Non-organic fruits especially apples, peaches, nectarines, pears, grapes, strawberries, raspberries and cherries. Also avoid some non-organic vegetables such as potatoes, spinach, lettuce, and bell peppers.

Replace With: Other fruits and vegetables or if listed above, insist on organic only.

6. Avoid: Gluten (wheat, rye, barley and most oats unless the label states gluten-free)

Replace With: Almond Flour, Coconut Flour and rice flour products. Bread made from flax, pea, quinoa, buckwheat and rice are good alternatives if you insist on eating bread.

7. Avoid: Commercial Meats and Poultry / Processed Meats such as luncheon meats.

Replace With: Grass-fed, Free Range meats / poultry. Organic where possible.

There are other foods/drinks you should avoid, but the above are the main contributors to ill-health and chronic inflammation. Begin by replacing one or two of the above and work your way down the list over time. It may seem daunting and even impossible at a first glance, but it is achievable if you take it step by step. Your family will also benefit from following the same rules, so you will not have to have separate shopping lists.

To avoid the pitfalls of eating the above foods ‘by accident’, or because you have to eat what is available, I highly recommend you plan your weekly meals ahead. This one factor appears to play a significant role in success.

The Chicken, Not the Egg

Demodex mites, the microscopic parasites that are normal inhabitants of facial skin, have long raised the question, “Which comes first, Demodex or rosacea?” as medical experts debate whether their increased numbers on rosacea patients are a cause or a result of the disorder, and now there may be some evidence that the “chicken” — Demodex mites — and not the “egg” comes first, according to a recent scientific report.

In an article in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, researcher Dr. F.M.N. Forton has championed the mite as a key culprit behind the development of the condition, noting it may be the missing link in understanding the onset of subtype 2 (papulopustular) rosacea, characterized by redness with bumps and pimples.1 He noted that National Rosacea Society-funded research has shown that toll-like receptors (TLRs) trigger production of cathelicidins, components of the immune system that may prompt subtype 2 rosacea.

He further noted that the two factors that stimulate the TLRs to induce cathelicidins are skin infection and disruption of the skin barrier. These conditions occur when Demodex mites are present, and he contends that the increased number of Demodex mites may therefore be a cause rather than a result of the bumps and pimples.

The link between mites and infection may be suggested by evidence that the complaint of sensitive skin in rosacea patients disappears when the number of Demodex mites is brought back to normal, he said. Disruption of the skin barrier may also occur as the mites erode the skin surface, penetrating into the lower dermis skin layer.

Furthermore, Dr. Forton suggested the Demodex mites themselves may be responsible for the bumps and pimples of subtype 2. Biopsies have shown that the presence of Demodex mites inside facial follicles consistently corresponds with the immune response in the skin as the body protects itself against invaders.

He noted that bumps and pimples — a sign that the body’s immune system has kicked in — may appear when the mites are already on their way out after treatment. This suggests that the mites trigger the immune process that produces the bumps, rather than simply gravitating toward them after they appear.

Topical therapies are known to potentially reduce the number of mites, and Dr. Forton concluded that confirming a role for Demodex introduces the possibility of important new advances in treatment.

In mild to moderate cases, doctors often prescribe oral and topical rosacea therapy to bring the condition under immediate control, followed by long-term therapy to maintain remission. A version of an oral antibiotic with less risk of microbial resistance has also been developed specifically for rosacea and has been shown to be safe for long-term use.

In severe cases, higher doses of oral antibiotics may be prescribed, and other drugs may be used for patients who are unresponsive to conventional treatments.

What can cause rosacea?

The exact causes of rosacea are not known. It’s an inflammatory disease. The targets of inflammation are blood vessels in the skin and eyes as well as glands of the nose. It’s possible to consider rosacea as an allergy where symptoms occur in the skin of the face and upper torso.

As with allergies, predisposition to rosacea runs in the families, mostly of North European origin. Additionally to the genetic component, there is an environmental factor. The people that live in cities have rosacea more frequently than people who live in the countryside.

The triggers of rosacea are environmental and lifestyle. For example, changes in weather such as extreme hot temperatures can trigger rosacea. Possibly the most frequent rosacea trigger is strong emotions. On the other hand, many skin care products or medications that widen blood vessels also trigger rosacea.

There are also types of food and drink that cause rosacea:

  • Any alcohol containing drink
  • Spicy food containing any sort of pepper
  • Food containing a compound that gives cinnamon its distinctive flavour

Causes of Rosacea

The causes of rosacea are not fully understood however there are things that are known to trigger Rosacea which we cover below.

Can Argan Oil Cause Rosacea?

Argan oil is shown to be beneficial for scalp and hair. However, as any organic product that contains a number of various compounds, it can cause allergy. There are reports that argan oil for the face can trigger rosacea, although there is no systematic research about it.

Can rosacea be caused by gluten?

In women, there is a strong link between rosacea and gluten intolerance. Gluten causes hyperactivity of the immune system increasing general inflammation. Inflammation of skin blood vessels leads to rosacea.

Probiotics are recommended in the cases of gluten-caused rosacea. It is also important to avoid red wine that can worsen gluten intolerance.

Does Stress Cause Rosacea?

Stress is one of the main causes of rosacea symptoms. For example, in one multicentre study, the most common factor aggravating rosacea was emotional changes (51.7%), followed by stress (48.4%).

Do Hormones Affect Rosacea?

Hormones play an important role in triggering rosacea. Stress is one of the most common factors causing rosacea flares. Stress is mediated by stress hormone, cortisol. Persistent stress elevates the level of cortisol and causes rosacea to become worse.

For example, during the time before menopause, perimenopause decline of estrogens causes the surges in hormones that normally regulate body temperature. This causes hot flashes typical for rosacea.

Clinical studies of patients have shown that active ingredient of Proactive, benzoyl peroxide can cause rosacea aggravation. Although the concentration of benzoyl peroxide in Proactive is lower than in most medications, there is still an adverse effect. If there is a suspicion that Proactive – or any other treatment – causes rosacea, the doctors recommend immediately discontinue it and find alternatives.

Can Spicy Food Cause Rosacea?

After heat and alcohol spicy food is the third main trigger of rosacea. Any food that contains a compound that is common in pepper, capsaicin, are likely to cause rosacea flare. This means that you have to avoid any type of pepper, even mild – white, black, cayenne, chili including chili oil, paprika, jalapenos.

The fourth common cause is another plant compound used in food called cinnamaldehyde. Cinnamaldehyde is found in ‘warming’ spices such as cinnamon, cloves, ginger, fenugreek, cloves, mustard, horseradish.

Bioidentical hormones have the same effect on rosacea as internal hormones. In some cases, female hormone imbalance can cause rosacea. In these cases, bioidentical hormones are prescribed to restore normal balance or, in the case of menopause, to replace normal hormones.

On the other hand, steroid hormones irrespective of their origin are one of the strongest causes of rosacea.

Can Flouride Cause Rosacea?

There are medical reports about cases of fluoride causing rosacea. While fluoride prevents dental decay by making teeth enamel stronger, it also irritates the skin of the mouth. Skin irritation can lead to inflammation that results in rosacea.

Can Sinus Problems Cause Rosacea?

There is a positive association of sinus inflammation or sinusitis with rosacea. This means that people with sinus problems have increased chances of developing rosacea. Steroid hormones that are often prescribed for treating sinusitis can also cause rosacea flares.

Does Niacin Cause Rosacea?

Niacin or vitamin B3 is shown to cause rosacea so make sure that you don’t consume an excessive amount of niacin. The obvious source of excessive niacin are breakfast cereals that are often fortified with vitamins including B3. Multivitamins of B-complex vitamins also contain too much niacin.

Can Accutane Cause Rosacea?

Accutane contains a derivative of vitamin A, retinoid isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is used in rosacea treatment. Some formulations of isotretinoin show anti-rosacea efficiency comparable to oral antibiotics. Therefore, it’s very unlikely that Accutane would have an adverse effect on rosacea.

Can olive oil cause rosacea?

Olive oil reduced symptoms of rosacea in a controlled clinical trial. Unless you use a lot of unrefined or extra virgin oil. Virgin oil contains various compounds in addition to the main olive oil compound, omega-3 fatty acids in your cooking, it is very unlikely that rosacea is caused by olive oil.

Can Antibiotics Cause Rosacea?

Antibiotics are often prescribed to reduce symptoms of rosacea as they reduce general inflammation. It is unlikely that antibiotics will cause rosacea. However, they can cause an allergy that looks like rosacea.

Can Dust Mites Cause Rosacea?

Helicobacter pylori is a usual passenger of the human digestive tract. It can cause stomach ulcers in some cases but most people don’t have any adverse effects because of its presence. Emollients are moisturising treatments applied directly to the skin to soothe and hydrate it. They cover the skin with a protective film to retain moisture. Emollients are formulated to decrease irritation and inflammation. It is unlikely that emollient will cause rosacea. However, for over the counter emollients make sure that it doesn’t contain other potentially irritating compounds such as perfume.

What Causes Rosacea Bumps and Pimples?

Rosacea bumps or papules are swollen parts of small blood vessels, capillaries. When capillaries are inflamed they dilate and often become visible.

Rosacea is an inflammation of small blood vessels, capillaries. During inflammation the vessels first widen. Then they form red bumps that are called papules.

What Causes Rosacea Pustules?

The most advanced stage of rosacea is pustules. Rosacea starts with blood vessels inflammation. This causes small red bumps or papules. When they fill with pus which is dead immune cells attracted to the sites of inflammation papules form.

Is It The Facial Redness in Rosacea That Causes Pustules?

Facial redness is the first stage of rosacea. The small blood vessels, capillaries swell increasing the blood flow to facial skin. There is an emerging evince that gut health is important in rosacea. Two ways to maintain gut health is eat fiber that is abundant in vegetables and helps good bacteria that live in the gut. Eating fermented foods will top up the good bacteria. These foods include yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir, pickled vegetables, and fruits.

The rosacea diet: what you need to know

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness on your cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. It may make you feel like you are constantly blushing. In some cases, pimple-like bumps and dryness can show up to the party, too. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but it tends to be prevalent in people with fair skin or who blush easily, although people with darker skins do experience it, too.

It may start as a slight flush, but over time it can get progressively worse and more apparent. However, some of the lesser known symptoms of rosacea are eye problems such as sensitivity to light, burning and stinging, and the thickening of the skin.

While it’s unclear exactly what causes rosacea, the effects can be debilitating for individuals.

Rosacea treatment: can diet really make a difference?

There is scientific evidence that certain strains of probiotics may reduce symptoms of rosacea, which ties into the gut microbiome research, and the National Rosacea Society survey reports that the majority of patients experience diluted symptoms once they change their diet.

Research does suggest that there is a link between rosacea and certain ‘trigger foods and drinks,’ such as spicy foods and alcohol, and dermatologists frequently suggest that patients experiment with cutting these out.

However, different people may have different triggers, and so it’s worth speaking to a medical professional about what may be the best course of action, for you.

Nutritionist Vicky Pennington advises: ‘One piece of advice which is the NHS gives is to keep a diary to identify any potential triggers.’ But she caveats: ‘As rosacea is a medical skin condition, diet might only be one aspect.’

Consultant Dermatologist Justine Hextall also advises noting down which foods are inflaming your rosacea. ‘Keeping a food diary will help to highlight certain triggers for rosacea. Many individuals often find that simply avoiding trigger foods and alcohol can make a significant improvement to their skin. A diet rich in anti-oxidants and if necessary anti-oxidant supplements will help too,’ she says.

‘Keep in mind that one of the most common triggers for rosacea is stress. Exercise that doesn’t exacerbate rosacea, mindfulness and in some cases hypnotherapy can help relieve rosacea symptoms and triggers,’ she adds.

Your rosacea diet plan

Doctors are still unsure about what causes rosacea, making it difficult to explain why things like weather conditions, physical activities and diet can make the symptoms worse.

However, the basic understanding is that when you flush, the blood rushes to your face causing it to become red and warmer, and those with rosacea have a higher sensitivity to heat leading to inflamed skin.

While everyone is different when it comes to their ‘triggers’, the rosacea diet focuses on eliminating foods and ingredients that tend to exacerbate the symptoms.

Lisa Borg, Nutritional Therapist at Pulse Light Clinic also recommends identifying food allergies and or sensitivities. ‘These may not necessarily cause a flushing episode, but rather a delayed reaction in the immune system which results in inflammation and excessive heat production. Some common symptoms of food sensitivity are: drowsiness during the day, sinus problems, bloating one to three hours after eating, migraine, unexplained fatigue and dark circles under the eyes,’ she says.

Pennington explains: ‘Triggers might vary from person to person, so it is useful to keep a log. For example, spicy and alcohol might only be triggers in some people. There would be no harm in avoiding these two however.’

Foods that could be rosacea triggers

  • Spicy foods and ‘hot’ spices like paprika, cayenne, cumin and black pepper
  • Dairy – think yoghurt, cheese and sour cream (there is no strong evidence linking rosacea and dairy, but some say that swerving it helped to lessen their symptoms)
  • Sugar
  • Alcohol (particularly red wine, champagne and beer)
  • Hot drinks, including tea, coffee and hot chocolate

    Foods to eat on the rosacea diet

    • Nuts and berries
    • Leafy greens and whole grains
    • Lentils, asparagus and kale
    • Deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables such as sweet potato, broccoli and cauliflower
    • Fatty fish, such as wild salmon and mackerel
    • Chia and flax seeds

      Is the rosacea diet plan safe?

      As long as you are getting sufficient nutrients from your diet, there is no need to worry that a rosacea diet is unsafe. Before making any drastic change to your diet or cutting out entire food groups, do consult a medical professional.

      What else can you do to help with rosacea aside from diet?

      ‘There is a long list of factors that can help with rosacea aside from diet,’ says Borg. Here are her top six tips.

      1/ Be careful with your skin

          Treat your skin with care, use lukewarm water and a mild, natural soap. Avoid washing your face with water that’s very hot or very cold. Dry the skin carefully, patting it instead of rubbing it. The quality of the water you use to wash with should also be addressed if washing is a particular trigger for you.

          2/ Choose your clothing and the material it is made from carefully

          Choose clothing made from cotton (organic cotton is even better), and avoid clothes that raise the local temperature around your face (e.g. polo neck jumpers), also avoid the synthetic fibres (rayon, nylon etc) as these do not ‘breathe’ as cotton does.

          3/ Use SPF

          Make sure you have adequate sun protection on a daily basis, ensure that it is non-irritating and hypo-allergenic, always test on a small area of skin before use.

          4/ Avoid extreme temperatures

          Getting overheated or moving from one extreme temperature to another can trigger rosacea. Whilst you may have no control of humidity outdoors, or indeed in an office or work-place, you can use a humidifier at home.

          5/ Choose the right skincare

          Opt for cosmetics that are as gentle as possible: the French pharmacy brands, such as La Roche-Posay, are gentle on sensitive skin.

          6/ Try topical steroid creams

          These can help to relieve the symptom but do not address the underlying causes. You should only use these under medical supervision.

          Being prone to redness has always been part of my life but given my healthy lifestyle, I never thought I would develop rosacea. I just assumed the fact I’ve always blushed easily and my cheeks get really red when I do an intense workout is just who I am. But here I am today, sharing this with you and it’s something that I’m dealing with one day at a time. Just like eczema, there is no cure for rosacea, just management of symptoms by reducing the factors that contribute to the inflammation.

          I’m not gonna sugarcoat things and say it’s been a walk in the park – I didn’t just eat some kale and poof I had calm skin.

          I wish it were that easy. Many people comment on my skin that it doesn’t look like I have rosacea but that’s because I cover it up with tinted moisturizer and pressed powder when I have a flare up.

          There’s been plenty of tears of frustration over the years but one thing I can say for sure is that my skin would be far worse if I was not careful with my diet and engaged in unhealthy habits.

          Rosacea is redness that affects your cheeks, nose and chin. It is one of the most common skin conditions for people over 30. In fact, millions of people all around the world suffer from it. It is a multifactorial skin condition, which means there is no one single cause for it, which makes it a little frustrating when you’re trying to address the root cause.

          That being said, there is so much you can do to manage this condition in terms of your nutrition and lifestyle.

          As a nutritionist, I’ve spent a lot of time researching this condition and I can say with confidence I have tried everything natural. I have chosen not to take antibiotics or use any antibiotic creams or steroid creams on my skin as the side effects outweigh any benefits.

          I do know my rosacea would be far worse if it were not for the habits I have in place. In this post today I’m going to share with you what you need to avoid if you have rosacea from a dietary perspective. Don’t worry, I will do a follow up post with all the wonderfully nourishing foods you’ll want to be eating like everything in this Veggie Quinoa Soup!

          What To Avoid Eating If You Have Rosacea

          This doesn’t mean you can never eat these foods again because many of them are health-promoting. I still eat eggplant ( as you know! ), I eat strawberries when in season but I keep this list in mind to manage my symptoms and there is no food on this list I eat every day. Some of these items I never consume (red wine) because they are big triggers for me. Know your triggers and it will help you manage your symptoms.

          Rancid Oils (Most Vegetable Oils)

          Corn oil, cottonseed oil, soybean, canola, sunflower and safflower oil usually in clear plastic bottles that line the grocery store shelves in abundance should be avoided. The consumption of these oils has increased dramatically in the last decade.

          There are multiple problems with these oils making them the very worst choice for your health.

          Before they end up in the bottle, they have often been treated with multiple pesticides and chemicals (many of them GMO), extracted with solvents such as hexane, been treated with multiple chemicals, and subjected to an unbelievable amount of processing from bleaching to deodorizing and more. Additionally, they are very high in omega-6 fatty acids and our diets have far too much of this fat already which can contribute to inflammation and make rosacea worse.

          It’s important to note that not all plant oils are bad. Olive oil, avocado oil, pumpkin seed oil and coconut oil are all plant-oils I use in cooking and baking. Choose organic cold-pressed oils (that means no heat in the extraction process) and look for oils packaged in dark glass bottles. Dark glass bottles protect the oil from oxidizing (going bad). The exception is coconut oil because it’s mostly saturated fat which means it’s more stable than olive or pumpkin seed oil.

          Since there are foods that are high in histamine and foods that trigger the release of histamine, I’ve combined both in the following list:

          • Alcohol and other fermented beverages i.e. kombucha and water kefir
          • Fermented foods such as yogurt, dairy kefir, sauerkraut
          • Veggies: eggplant, spinach
          • Fruits: avocados, tomatoes, bananas, papaya, citrus fruits
          • Walnuts, cashews, peanuts, pineapples
          • Seafood
          • Egg whites
          • Chocolate
          • Soy
          • Yeast extract
          • Any foods that are aged, pickled, dried, smoked, processed or fermented

          Histamine causes vasodilation in the skin (widening of blood vessels) which exacerbates rosacea. This means that when blood vessels in the face dilate, redness follows. I take quercitin everyday because it’s a phytonutrient that inhibits the release of histamine – this has helped me. All that being said, high-histamine foods may not be an issue for you. It’s a bit of trial and error.

          Cow’s Milk

          One of the most common food allergens and food sensitivities is dairy. In addition to that, lactose intolerance affects around 65% of the population. This means 65% of people do not make an enzyme needed to break down the milk sugar and therefore have many symptoms like gas, diarrhea and bloating when they consume dairy.

          Even though dairy is a great source of bone-building nutrients like vitamin D and calcium it has a downside. Dairy can be inflammatory ( inflammation is at the root of rosacea), causing redness and swelling, making rosacea worse. Fermented dairy such as yogurt and kefir as you just learned is a source of histamine.

          What about goat and sheep dairy?

          This is a better option if you are sensitive to cow dairy. Sheep and goat dairy have less A1 casein protein and an abundance of A2 casein. Why does that matter? This matters because A1 is far more irritating and allergy provoking than A2. I’ve written more about this here: Cow vs Goat and Sheep Milk, Which is Better?

          Gluten can cause increased permeability in the gut leading to leaky gut, food sensitivities, and inflammation. Increased levels of inflammation, food sensitivities, and poor gut health also exacerbates rosacea. It has been established that a high incidence of people with gastrointestinal disorders also have rosacea. It is well known that gluten can make these GI disorders worse.

          Gluten intolerance, celiac disease and autoimmune disease are at the root of many skin issues beyond rosacea such as acne , eczema , and psoriasis.

          If you want to fuel the fire of rosacea then eat lots of sugar. Wait! Don’t do that! Sugar worsens inflammation, increases oxidative stress, irritates the gut lining and aggravates rosacea. It also promotes AGEs (advanced glycation end products) which has this caramelizing effect on your skin, we talk about it in season 1 of the Joyous Health Podcast, listen here .

          Sugar also causes rapid swings in blood glucose and insulin levels, may increase hunger, and may elevate free fatty acid levels. The latter oxidizes and turns rancid quickly which translates to inflammation in the body. The same goes for refined starches in foods such as white rice, white bread and white pasta and other foods made with white flour.

          I do my best to avoid added sugars even if it’s organic cane sugar which means you must be an avid label reader. Refined sugar of course is the worst offender because it’s truly nutrient dead. I use honey, stevia, maple syrup and others to sweeten but truly in moderation.

          Despite the French paradox, alcohol causes increased production of inflammatory cytokines, which are cell-signaling molecules. This causes the dilation of the small blood vessels in your face, making your skin flushed. It’s as simple as that. Want to reduce rosacea, skip the wine. Sorry!

          Anything really warm can set off a rosacea flare. That being said, I’m a huge tea drinker but I know that caffeinated beverages like coffee or black tea, as delicious as they are, they make my cheeks very hot. However, I can slurp back any of our organic herbal teas (caff-free) with no issues. The key here is to notice your triggers and do your best to avoid them.

          The culprit in spicy foods is the compound capsaicin. Capsaicin affects the pain receptors in your skin that feel warmth. Foods high in capsaicin include chili peppers, jalapenos, hot sauce and Tabasco sauce. Black pepper, paprika, curry spices can also make your skin red. That being said, I love a little hot sauce on my eggs or drizzled on my cauli tacos. But I don’t use it every day.

          Cinnamaldehyde gives cinnamon its familiar pungent flavor. This compound causes a warming sensation that can trigger rosacea symptoms. It’s found in a range of foods including cinnamon, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and chocolate (very sad face). I haven’t found this to be a big trigger for myself personally, but everyone is different so please just be aware of this one.

          Remember, it’s not about perfection— it’s about being aware of your triggers.

          If you have the knowledge about what can cause a flare up for you, then you’ve already won half the battle! This will build your confidence in managing your symptoms. 

          If you’ve read all the way to the bottom and you’re wondering what you CAN eat, remember it’s about your diet as a whole. If you eat some birthday cake or have your mom’s famous apple pie and ice cream this weekend don’t beat yourself up about it. If the large majority of the time you’re eating nourishing foods than the occasional indulgence is okay and recommended!

          Can an Alkaline Diet Help Rosacea?

          If you are one of the unlucky people who have rosacea, you have probably searched for a solution to your problem and maybe you have tried a few approaches including various creams, light therapy (phototherapy), or even some alternative treatments. While some of these approaches may have worked for a while, eventually, the rosacea returned.

          Not all is lost, though, and you have probably learned a lot during your search. You may have discovered that harsh chemical creams or lotions can actually make rosacea much worse, despite what the package claimed. You may have also learned that phototherapy worked, at least for a while. And you probably learned that many treatments simply don’t work at all, despite whatever the hype was about the product.

          All of these approaches are doomed because they fail to understand and address the underlying cause of the disease. What you need to do is forget trying to treat rosacea as a skin problem and think of it as a whole-body problem; or, more specifically, a gut problem.

          The old saying that “beauty is more than skin deep” has never been truer than when you are dealing with a skin disease such as rosacea. Skin diseases are reflections of overall health. It is well-known, for example, that people who eat a non-Western diet have fewer skin diseases: including rosacea, acne, eczema and others. This is because non-Western diets focus on more fruits and vegetables and fewer sugars, grains, and processed foods. People eating a non-Western diet are healthier than the average American and their skin shows it.

          Brady Barrows and author of a book on diet and rosacea, called Rosacea Diet: A simple method to control rosacea, commented on the relationship between processed foods and rosacea:

          As the processed food industry of the developed world makes inroads into the underdeveloped world the result is a diet producing obesity. Rosacea during this same period has increased dramatically worldwide. The current number of Americans with rosacea is over 14 million.

          There is a healthy path to clearer skin and, while it may take more effort on your part than simply buying a cream or lotion, the results will be dramatic and long-lasting.

          What is Rosacea?

          Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that produces a red rash across the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. The rash goes through periods of remission followed by periods where the rash is much worse (flare-ups). What exactly causes a flare-up is a bit of a mystery, but most people, over time, uncover their own triggers that seem to make the rash much worse. For some people, their trigger is coffee or other hot drinks, for others it is stress or anxiety, and for others it may be some food they ate.

          What you need to recognize about triggers is that they point to you in the right direction: Triggers tell you that rosacea is a whole-body disease and not just a skin disease.

          While rosacea can be severe and produce permanent swelling of the nose called rhinophyma, or even severe eye symptoms, for most people rosacea remains an unsightly, embarrassing blotch on their face.

          The Gut and the Skin

          While it can sound strange, there is actually a very close relationship between the health of your digestive tract and the health of your skin. Some researchers have gone as far as to say that inflammation or the rash on the face means that there is also inflammation throughout the gut.

          Although the precise etiology of rosacea is not known, numerous associations with inflammatory gastrointestinal tract disorders have been reported. Furthermore, substance P-immunoreactive neurones occur in considerably greater numbers in tissue surrounding affected blood vessels suggesting involvement of neurogenic inflammation and moreover plasma kallikrein-kinin activation is consistently found in patients.

          While there is a lot of technical jargon in the quote above, it is basically saying that there is a close relationship between inflammatory conditions of the gut (such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease or even Celiac disease) including body-wide inflammation and a disease like rosacea.

          Slow transit time, better known as constipation, has also been known to be associated with rosacea. In a recent study, researchers treated a rosacea patient with slow transit time and saw a complete removal of his symptoms. This study, while incredibly small, shows the relationship between gut health and rosacea.

          Other studies on diet and rosacea have also been preformed. A vegetarian alkaline diet was shown to dramatically reduce the symptoms of rosacea over two months. Not only did the symptoms of rosacea reduce or disappear in almost every participant, but eating an alkaline diet also reduced body-wide inflammation in the participants.

          Acid Base Balance is the Key

          A whole-body approach to rosacea recognizes that what you put into your mouth matters and what you eat can affect your health and the look of your skin. A whole-body approach is also an understanding that the body needs balance in order to thrive, and that most of what we typically eat puts us way out of balance.

          The basic balance in your body is called the acid/base or acid/alkaline balance. You might have heard of pH balance, but not known what it is exactly. Every food that we eat has a certain pH: it is either a low pH (1 —7) and considered an acid, or it is a high pH (7-14) and considered a base. Water is right in the middle; it is not either an acid or a base. Your body likes to mimic water and keep its own pH close to neutral as possible; the blood, for instance, is slightly basic (pH of 7.3—7.4).

          It is this at this neutral or slightly alkaline pH that your body functions its best.

          When your body is in an acidic state, instead of the natural alkaline state, it doesn’t function well. This means that the body’s basic mechanisms such as detoxification, elimination, and repair all don’t function as they should. When these mechanisms fail, the result is disease, in your case, this means that rosacea once again flairs up.

          This acid problem is made worse by many of the activities we engage in: eating poorly, not sleeping well, not exercising, and feeling stressed… all of these push us to an acidic state.

          How to Discover Your Own Balance

          It is very easy to discover what you own personal acid base balance is by testing either your saliva or urine every morning. You can use pH strips, which are multicolored strips that can let you know if you are too acid or alkaline (although it is hard to be too alkaline).

          In order to test your pH simply put a pH strip in your mouth or touch the paper to your urine stream. You want to do this first thing in the morning. As you eat an alkaline diet, you can watch how your pH readings will change from acidic to more basic (from unhealthy to healthy). You can also notice how different foods will change your morning pH and how you feel when you are more acidic.

          When Acid Pushes You, Push Back

          Since many of the activities you engage in push you towards a more acidic state, you have to develop an action plan to push back. The easiest way to do this is to eat a diet that is more alkaline. While you do not have to eat a purely vegetarian diet, you do want to include a large number of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

          Much like giving a car the right fuel, our bodies thrive when we give it what it needs. Interestingly, eating an alkaline diet not only means that your body is more in the proper balance, but it is also getting more of the nutrients your body needs.

          Diet—far from being just a source of potential triggers for Rosacea—is actually the key to a permanent solution to the disease. Eating an alkaline diet means that in as little as a few weeks, your skin should start looking better and you will feel much better.

          Rosacea Rescue Diet

          The best diet for someone with rosacea is an alkaline diet.

          Here are the basics to an alkaline diet:

          • Eat more fruits and vegetables, in fact they should outnumber and outweigh all the other food that you eat.
          • Avoid acid-forming foods such as grains, sugar and many meats. Of the three (grains, sugar and meat), meat is the most allowable because it can be easily balanced by a large amount of vegetables or fruit.
          • Drink plenty of fresh clean water.
          • Make sure you are getting enough of the essential nutrients your body needs; supplement if you have to, you body may need the additional nutrients.
          • Avoid cooked fats, trans fats, and fried foods.
          • Avoid dairy foods.

          While not a complete list, here are the most common acid and alkaline foods:

          Acid-forming foods: alcoholic drinks, breads, cake, coffee, cereals, crackers, grains (except millet and quinoa), vinegar, eggs, oils or foods cooked in oils, meat, seafood and fish, nuts, seeds, pastas, salt, sugar, tofu

          Alkaline-forming foods: fresh fruit, vegetable, salad green, sprouts, raw cider vinegar, lima beans, potatoes, citrus fruits, millet, quinoa

          When following this diet, you don’t want to completely avoid all acid-forming foods, but you want to balance them with as many alkaline-forming foods as possible. A good rule of thumb is to have a meal of 80 percent alkaline-forming foods and 20 percent acid-forming foods.

          Other Helpful Tools

          Don’t just stop at changing your diet, there are other ways to keep your body in an alkaline state. Try the rest of these for an added punch to your anti-rosacea diet:

          • Manage stress
          • Detoxify your body
          • Drink enough water
          • Add fiber to your diet
          • Exercise
          • Avoid coffee, tea, trans fats, alcohol, cigarettes, fried foods
          • Avoid artificial sweeteners, some have been blamed on causing rosacea
          • Eat lots of berries
          • Eat cool foods
          • Maximize nutrition with a multivitamin
          • Take digestive enzymes
          • Make sure you get enough EFAs

          Despite what you may think, you don’t have to live with rosacea; as your body becomes healthier, so too, will your skin. The side effects of a choosing an alkaline diet is not only that you have healthier skin, but your whole body will feel better.

          What is Rosacea?

          Rosacea (rosacea, acne pink) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis, which is a persistent vasodilation on the face.

          Rosacea occurs in 8-10% of the world’s population. The disease is more common in women. However, men develop complications of the disease faster and more often. Acne rosacea occurs primarily in fair-skinned people between the ages of 40 and 50.It is extremely rare that rosacea affects the elderly and children.

          Causes of rosacea

          The causes of rosacea are not fully understood. But there are a number of theories according to which diseases of the stomach and the endocrine system, disorders in the immune system, hereditary factors, etc. play a role in the occurrence of rosacea.

          Internal factors of the human body that contribute to the occurrence of rosacea:

          • digestive tract dysfunction,
          • changes in the connective tissue of the dermis,
          • immune disorders,
          • changes in the sebaceous hair apparatus,
          • high pressure,
          • hormone imbalance,
          • psychovegetative disorders,
          • Diet with large amounts of hot food and carbonated drinks,
          • extractive,
          • tonic substances and spices,
          • alcohol abuse.

          External factors that can significantly aggravate the condition are taking a bath, visiting a sauna or bath.

          It would not be superfluous to note climatic factors :

          • prolonged exposure to frost or wind,
          • use of aggressive cosmetic products,
          • strong emotional stress.

          Disease symptoms

          At the initial stage, skin changes are subtle and temporary and transient.Then the vasodilatation becomes persistent and noticeable. The temperature of the skin rises, locally against the background of dilated blood vessels, if the skin is not properly cared for or the skin is thick, then all conditions are created for the development of a secondary infection: staphylococcus, demodex. Therefore, as a result, there are inflammatory elements and pustules.

          Superficial vessels react to the action of internal and external factors and expand.

          Rosacea – treatment and prevention

          Since there are many causes of rosacea, the methods of treatment are also very diverse.Some products are more conducive to reducing rosacea on the face. Other methods are aimed at treating concomitant diseases. In particular, the digestive system and the nervous system.

In some cases, meibomyitis (inflammation of the meibomian glands located along the edges of the eyelids) and recurrent chalazion join.           Rosacea symptoms

          The manifestations of the disease depend on the stage of development of the disease.

          • Erythematous stage . Areas of hyperemia on the face (forehead, nose, cheeks), rarely on the chest, and telangiectasia appear and can persist for several days.           – The international term “rosacea” is a euphonic word associated with a rose, but the disease does not at all make a person appear. The former name adopted in Russia – “rosacea” – was more descriptive. We use both terms today.

          As a disease, rosacea was mentioned as early as the 19th century. But there are still a lot of mysteries left.

          In rosacea, attention is often drawn to a red nose.There are a lot of sebaceous glands in his skin; at a certain stage of the disease, their activation begins. An increase in the sebaceous glands, proliferation of connective tissue deform the nose, the so-called rhinophyma occurs – the nose becomes red, bumpy, loose. This problem occurs mainly in men. But in general, rosacea often affects women: redness of the facial skin, pronounced vascular network, acne, capturing certain areas – on the cheeks, forehead, chin. Usually, rosacea occurs in middle-aged and older people.If young people have the first symptoms of the disease in the form of red disappearing areas, then this is already a sign that they need to take care of their health.

          – What is the mechanism of the disease?

          – The cause of the disease is in disorders of metabolic processes in the skin and changes in regulation

          Most often, people with blood vessels close to the surface of the skin are predisposed to rosacea.They (often unaware of their condition) have reddening of the skin.           – How is this skin treated?

Badly chewing food, we do not use some of the enzymes, we kind of send an unprepared semi-finished product into the stomach and, even after eating good foods, we arrange a “trash heap” in the stomach, provoking decay processes. The kidneys and liver simply cannot cope with an excessive amount of putrefaction products, and intoxication develops.

          Let’s say New Year’s. The clinic where I worked was multidisciplinary, but only near the dermatologist’s office on the first day after the holidays there was a huge queue: all cases of “eczema” worsened, the rash came to the surface, and other skin diseases appeared.The skin is a reserve way of removing toxins – like a second intestine, second kidneys, for long days of a feast we overload the main ways of removing waste products of the body. This is also the reason for the redness of the face.

          The causative agent of demodicosis is the iron tick.Currently, out of 65 species and several subspecies of this tick, two have been identified in humans: Demodex folli culorum and Demodex brevis . D. folliculorum was first identified in 1841, D. brevis – in 1963. The first species is more common. The mite habitat is hair follicles, sebaceous glands, meibomian glands. D. brevis is more common on the skin of the trunk. As a rule, D. folliculorum is found in the upper part of the pilosebital canal (≤ 5 organisms / cm 2 ), D.brevis – in the sebaceous glands and ducts. The source of food for mites is sebum.

          According to different authors, 55-100% of the population are carriers of iron. Clinical manifestations of such carriage may be absent. So, N.I. Such (2004) established the carriage of the parasite in 89% of patients. At the age of 30–44 years, the disease is detected in 42.6% of the surveyed (mean age of women – 44.5 ± 2 years, men – 38.3 ± 5.4 years) [1]. Carriage of a tick in healthy individuals at different age periods is 19.3–61.2% [2].In infants and children, due to low sebum production, colonization of Demodex is insufficient. In adolescents and young people, tick prevalence is also low. It increases in the population from 20 to 60 years and remains stable after reaching 80 years [3].

          In men, the prevalence of ticks is higher than in women (23 versus 13%). In addition, D. brevis is more often detected in men (23 versus 9%, respectively).

          Since the mite Demodex is found on healthy skin, it can be considered a conditionally pathogenic parasite.Under normal conditions, it is located within the basement membrane of the epidermis [4].

          The development cycle of Demodex in the skin lasts 15 days. The fertilized female lays diamond-shaped eggs at the mouth of the follicle. The optimum temperature for tick development is 30–40 ° C. At 14 ° C, numbness sets in, at 52 ° C – death. In water, a tick can live up to 25 days, in dry air – only a day and a half. The most favorable nutrient media for it are vegetable oil, fat, petroleum jelly [5].

          Outside the host, the mite does not reproduce [6], but remains viable for up to nine days in conditions of darkness, constant humidity and room temperature.

          Infection occurs directly from a person (carrier or patient) or indirectly – through underwear or bedding. The possibility of infection from pets is not excluded.

          Under the influence of certain factors, ticks can become pathogenic organisms.We are talking, in particular, about dysfunction of the sebaceous glands and changes in the composition of sebum, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, nervous system, dysfunction of the endocrine glands, long-term use of topical glucocorticosteroids [7]. A change in the ratio of opportunistic skin flora can also serve as a trigger for the development of demodicosis [8]. D. folliculorum can participate in the development of the disease if its number exceeds 5 organisms / cm 2 [9].

          Currently, there are two forms of demodicosis. Primary demodicosis develops on externally unchanged skin. Secondary demodicosis is a complication of the underlying disease (rosacea, perioral dermatitis, etc.) [4]. A combined course of the disease is usually observed.

          Objective signs of demodicosis are accompanied by itching, burning, slight soreness in the area of ​​rashes, a feeling of tightness of the skin, a decrease in its elasticity and softness [10].

          The diagnosis is made on the basis of the clinical picture and the detection of mites in the contents of the pustules, the secretion of the sebaceous glands, scrapings and scales from the lesions [7]. It is important not only to establish the presence of mites, but also to determine their number [4].

          The question of the role of Demodex mites in the development of various diseases of the skin and mucous membranes, including rosacea, remains controversial [11, 12]. The results of the studies have demonstrated a higher number of ticks per 1 cm 2 in patients with rosacea [13] compared with patients with seborrheic dermatitis and acne.

          On the surface of Demodex mites, bacteria Bacillus oleronius were identified, capable of stimulating the inflammatory response and growth of bacteria Streptococcus and Staphylococcus . As a result, favorable conditions for their reproduction are created [14]. Under the influence of various factors, mites begin to multiply actively, destroying the epithelium of the follicles and penetrating into the dermis. As a result, an inflammatory reaction is triggered and the course of dermatoses is aggravated [15, 16].

          Treatment of demodicosis

          Therapy for demodicosis should be phased. One of the first stages is carrying out sanitary and hygienic measures [17].

          When choosing drug therapy, it is necessary to take into account the clinical picture of the disease, the type of ticks, their number, as well as the presence of concomitant pathology (rosacea, perioral dermatitis, acne, etc.).

          To act on ticks Demodex , acaricidal agents are used, which include derivatives of the nitroimidazole group.

          The structural features of the integument of ticks necessitate long-term courses of antiparasitic therapy and the choice of drugs with a minimum molecular size.

          It is also necessary to include symptomatic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, desensitizing drugs in the treatment regimen.

          Gel Demoten

          Demodectic mange rarely occurs as an independent disease, therefore, the creation of means for the treatment of skin pathologies complicated by demodicosis and the care of such skin remains relevant.

          Recently, a new product has appeared on the pharmaceutical market – Demoten gel. It contains sulfur, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera juice, polyvinylpyrrolidone.

          Sulfur has antiseptic, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory effects and helps to normalize the proliferation of epidermal cells.

          Hyaluronic acid moisturizes the skin, increases its elasticity, and stimulates the renewal of the epidermis.

          Aloe vera juice contains many biologically active substances.These are simple sugars, polysaccharides, amino acids, enzymes, minerals, organic acids, a complex of vitamins A, C, E. The inclusion of aloe vera juice in the gel improves skin condition, promotes cell regeneration, and provides an antiseptic effect. Polyvinylpyrrolidone, which has a sorbing and detoxifying effect, provides effective skin cleansing.

          Application experience

          We observed 23 patients (11 men and 12 women): 14 patients with papulopustular rosacea, nine with erythematous rosacea.The patients’ age is from 39 to 67 years.

          The patients were divided into four groups. The first consisted of four patients with erythematous rosacea who received only basic therapy, the second – five patients with the same diagnosis who received concomitant therapy in addition to basic therapy, the third – five patients with papulopustular rosacea on basic therapy, the fourth – nine patients with a similar diagnosis on basic and accompanying therapy.

          All patients underwent a laboratory test for the presence of the D mite. folliculorum . Found from six to ten individuals in the preparation.

          Complex therapy of erythematous rosacea involved the use of azelaic acid in the form of a gel or metronidazole in the form of a gel once or twice a day, depending on the severity of clinical symptoms. As an accompanying therapy, Demoten gel was used twice a day (morning and evening).

          Treatment of papulopustular rosacea at the first stage included the use of systemic (antibiotic doxycycline at a dose of 100 mg twice a day for ten days) and topical (antiparasitic drug metronidazole gel once or twice a day and Demoten gel) agents.Demoten gel was applied 15–20 minutes after metronidazole.

          Three to five days after the start of therapy, the severity of skin manifestations significantly decreased in patients of the second and fourth groups. In particular, hyperemia, edema, itching decreased (Fig. 1). The dynamics of clinical manifestations of hyperemia and edema during therapy in four groups is shown in Fig. 2.

          At the second stage of therapy, all patients of the fourth group continued to use Demoten gel.

          A repeated laboratory test for the presence of mites Demodex, , carried out ten days after the start of treatment, showed a decrease in the number of individuals in the preparation to one to three.

          During the two months of observation, no exacerbations of the disease were recorded.

          Considering that no strong antiparasitic agents were used in the therapy and the number of mites in the preparations was reduced, it can be concluded that the Demoten gel has a stable antiparasitic effect.

          Conclusion

          The use of Demoten gel in the complex therapy of rosacea complicated by demodicosis allows you to quickly achieve positive dynamics. This drug can be prescribed for a long time in different forms of rosacea, which increases the relapse period.
