Understanding Hangovers: Causes and Symptoms

A hangover is the body’s reaction to excessive alcohol consumption, resulting in a range of unpleasant symptoms. But what exactly causes these dreaded after-effects?

Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production and leads to dehydration. This dehydration is a primary factor in many hangover symptoms. Additionally, alcohol disrupts sleep patterns, interferes with the body’s inflammatory response, and produces toxic byproducts as it’s metabolized.

Common hangover symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating

The severity of these symptoms can vary based on factors such as the amount of alcohol consumed, individual tolerance, and overall health.

Hydration: The Foundation of Hangover Relief

One of the most crucial steps in alleviating hangover symptoms is rehydration. Why is proper hydration so important for hangover recovery?

Alcohol’s diuretic effect leads to increased fluid loss, contributing to dehydration. This dehydration can exacerbate headaches, fatigue, and other hangover symptoms. Replenishing lost fluids and electrolytes is essential for recovery.

Effective hydration strategies include:

  • Drinking water before, during, and after alcohol consumption
  • Consuming electrolyte-rich beverages like sports drinks or coconut water
  • Sipping on clear broths to replenish both fluids and minerals

While popular among some, drinks like Pedialyte have gained attention as potential hangover cures. These electrolyte solutions can indeed help restore fluid balance, but they’re not a magic bullet. The key is consistent hydration throughout the recovery process.

Nutritional Supplements: Boosting Recovery

Certain nutritional supplements may help alleviate hangover symptoms and support the body’s recovery process. Which supplements show promise for hangover relief?

B Vitamins

B vitamins, particularly thiamine (B1) and folate, play crucial roles in alcohol metabolism and may help reduce hangover severity. Some hospitals even administer B vitamin IVs to patients with alcohol-related issues.

Milk Thistle

This herbal supplement is known for its potential liver-protective properties. Taking milk thistle before drinking and the morning after may support liver function and accelerate alcohol processing.

Vitamin C

As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C may help combat the oxidative stress caused by alcohol consumption. Some experts recommend taking up to 1,000 mg three times a day to reduce hangover effects.

Omega-3 Fish Oil

The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids may help alleviate hangover-related inflammation. Taking a tablespoon of fish oil or several capsules before bed might reduce next-day headache severity.

While these supplements show promise, it’s important to note that more research is needed to fully understand their effectiveness in hangover prevention and treatment.

Natural Remedies: Harnessing the Power of Whole Foods

In addition to supplements, certain whole foods and natural remedies may offer relief from hangover symptoms. What are some effective food-based hangover cures?

Juicing for Recovery

A nutrient-rich juice blend can provide vital vitamins, minerals, and hydration. Consider combining:

  • Carrots: Rich in antioxidants
  • Beets: Contain blood-building nutrients
  • Cucumbers: High water content for hydration
  • Cabbage: Acts as a blood cleanser and supports digestive health

This combination may help replenish nutrients, support liver function, and aid in overall recovery.

Ginger

Known for its anti-nausea properties, ginger can help alleviate stomach discomfort associated with hangovers. Try sipping on ginger tea or adding fresh ginger to your recovery juice blend.

Honey

Rich in fructose, honey may help the body metabolize alcohol more quickly. It also provides easily digestible carbohydrates to help stabilize blood sugar levels.

While these natural remedies can be beneficial, it’s important to remember that they work best in conjunction with proper hydration and rest.

The Role of Sleep in Hangover Recovery

Quality sleep is crucial for the body’s recovery process after excessive alcohol consumption. How does sleep impact hangover recovery, and what can you do to improve sleep quality?

Alcohol disrupts normal sleep patterns, often leading to poor quality sleep even if you spend more time in bed. This disrupted sleep contributes to fatigue and cognitive impairment associated with hangovers.

To improve sleep quality and aid recovery:

  1. Create a dark, cool, and quiet sleep environment
  2. Avoid screens for at least an hour before bed
  3. Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation
  4. Consider using a white noise machine to block out disruptive sounds

While it may be tempting to sleep in late after a night of drinking, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can help regulate your body’s natural rhythms and support faster recovery.

Debunking Hangover Myths: What Doesn’t Work

Despite numerous popular beliefs, some commonly suggested hangover cures lack scientific evidence or may even be counterproductive. Which popular remedies should you avoid?

Hair of the Dog

Drinking more alcohol to cure a hangover only delays the inevitable and can lead to further dehydration and prolonged symptoms.

Greasy Food

While some swear by a greasy breakfast, consuming heavy, fatty foods can actually irritate the stomach and worsen nausea.

Coffee Overload

While a cup of coffee may provide a temporary energy boost, excessive caffeine can further dehydrate the body and potentially worsen headaches.

Sweating It Out

Intense exercise during a hangover can lead to further dehydration and may increase the risk of injury due to impaired coordination and judgment.

Instead of relying on these myths, focus on evidence-based approaches like hydration, rest, and gentle nutrition to support your body’s recovery process.

Prevention: The Best Hangover Cure

While knowing how to treat a hangover is valuable, preventing one in the first place is even better. What strategies can help minimize the risk of a severe hangover?

Effective hangover prevention strategies include:

  • Pacing yourself: Limit alcohol intake and alternate alcoholic drinks with water
  • Eating before and while drinking: Food in the stomach slows alcohol absorption
  • Choosing lighter colored drinks: They generally contain fewer congeners, which can contribute to hangover severity
  • Staying hydrated: Drink water throughout the night and before bed
  • Getting quality sleep: Aim for a full night’s rest after drinking

Remember, the most reliable way to avoid a hangover is to drink in moderation or abstain from alcohol altogether. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend limiting alcohol to one drink per day for women for optimal health.

When to Seek Medical Help for Hangover Symptoms

While most hangovers resolve on their own with time and proper care, some situations may require medical attention. When should you consider seeking professional help for hangover symptoms?

Seek medical assistance if you experience:

  • Severe vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Seizures
  • Slow or irregular breathing
  • Pale or blue-tinged skin
  • Unconsciousness or difficulty waking up

These symptoms may indicate alcohol poisoning or other serious complications that require immediate medical intervention. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health and well-being.

In conclusion, while there’s no instant cure for a hangover, a combination of proper hydration, nutritional support, rest, and time can help alleviate symptoms and support your body’s recovery process. By understanding the science behind hangovers and implementing evidence-based strategies, you can minimize their impact and recover more quickly. Remember, the best approach to hangovers is prevention through responsible alcohol consumption.

Safe Hangover Cures That Work

For health’s sake, women should limit alcohol to one drink a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But let’s face it, when you’re out celebrating your friend’s new job or simply cutting loose after a long week, it’s easy to overdo. Problem is, you pay the price for overindulging the next morning. And it’s not pretty. “A hangover is your body withdrawing from alcohol,” says Stuart Finkelstein, MD, addiction medicine specialist in Lakewood, CA. “The most common complaints include headache, nausea, and generally feeling bad all over.” See Your Body On A Hangover to learn the other ways overindulging wreaks havoc on your body.

Recent news stories cite the popularity of Pedialyte, an electrolyte drink for sick kids, as a hangover cure for adults. “Since alcohol is a diuretic it actually dehydrates your body,” says Finkelstein. “Therefore drinking fluids like water, Pedialyte or Gatorade-type drinks can help replenish your body’s need for more fluids. It’s probably the best way to help reduce the effects of a hangover.”

Naturally, if you stay within your limits you’ll never need a hangover cure. But on occasion when you’ve had too much, try these expert recommended solutions to feel better fast.

Milk thistle
Taking the herbal supplement milk thistle before you go out and again in the morning can help you feel better faster, says Prem Chattoo, MD, a gastroenterologist with Hudson River Gastroenterology with offices in New York and New Jersey. “It basically acts as your liver’s assistant, helping get rid of the alcohol more quickly than your liver could on its own.” Take it again in the morning to help your body keep working on the remaining alcohol during the day. (Learn how to detox your liver and lose up to 13 pounds in 2 weeks with Heal Your Whole Body.)

Activated charcoal

Consuming activated charcoal (available in capsule form) after drinking absorbs the alcohol and lessens the hangover symptoms, says Nancy Guberti, MS, a Greenwich, CT, based certified holistic nutritionist. “Works like a charm. Also make sure to stay hydrated.” Start with a squeeze of lemon and splash of apple cider vinegar in your water. If you drink coffee cut back a bit, since coffee narrows blood vessels and may boost blood pressure, not desirable when you have a hangover, says Guberti.

Pop a B vitamin
In the hospital setting, a combination of electrolytes and B vitamins are given through a special IV formulation to people who have ingested too much alcohol, says Arielle Levitan, MD, co-founder of Vous Vitamin LLC. “It’s very effective in combating the toxic effects. We recommend B vitamins (specifically thiamine and folate) and magnesium with plenty of water to help both prevent and treat a hangover.”

Juice up

Juicing together a combination of carrot, beet (contains blood building nutrients—valuable in cases of headache), and cucumber can help, says Will Shannon, a naturopath with Australia’s Pinnacle Clinic. “Add a little cabbage for extra benefit. Cabbage is a blood cleanser and contains sulfur, which helps cleanse the mucous membranes of the intestines and stomach.”

Go for C
Taking a gram (1,000 mg) of vitamin C three times a day reduces the effects of alcohol toxicity, says Shannon. “It helps to increase white blood cell count to boost the rate of alcohol clearance from the blood and improve the elimination of acetaldehyde, the toxic chemical in to which alcohol is converted by the body, leading to throbbing headaches, and nausea or vomiting.”

Fish around

Before going to bed take a tablespoon of omega-3 fish oil or five capsules, says Robert Kominiarek, DO, a Chicago family physician. “It’s a great anti-inflammatory supplement. Chances are you’ll wake up without that pounding headache.”

Hangover Cures That Work and Don’t, According to Science

  • One too many alcoholic drinks can cause a next-day hangover with symptoms like headache, nausea, and anxiety.
  • The most reliable cure for a hangover is time, since your body needs to process all the ethanol, or the type of alcohol people consume, you’ve subjected it to.
  • Many products and activities claim to cure your hangover quickly. Here’s what science says they can and can’t do to make your recovery a little easier.
  • Visit INSIDER’s homepage for more.

If you’re among the 56% of Americans adults who have indulged in an alcoholic beverage in the past month, you may have also encountered its unfortunate counterpoint — the dreaded hangover.

Waking up with a dry mouth, a pounding head, and a heaving stomach are indications that your body is expelling all the beer, wine, or liquor you so enthusiastically consumed the night before.

But aside from learning your lesson and drinking in moderation next time, or laying off booze completely, how do you handle the misery right now?

Unfortunately, nothing other than time is going to “cure” your hangover completely. In fact, research investigating 15 kinds of hangover solutions — including medications, herbal supplements, and home remedies — found that none of them worked.

Plus, effectively treating a hangover would involve fully understanding why they occur, something doctors and researchers still don’t completely understand since the experiences seem to be caused by a complex combination of factors that vary widely from person to person.

There are, however, some steps you can take to make your hangover less miserable once it’s too late to prevent it, including eating and drinking things that support your body’s efforts to purge last night’s mistakes.

Hangover Cures That Actually Work

We all know that what comes after drinking alcohol is the inevitable pain of a hangover. We all know this, and yet time and time again, we make the same mistake.

Well, hopefully some of these hangover cures will help take the edge off after our first night out in a LONG time when the pubs reopen 4 July.

We scoured the internet and asked our friends and family for their hangover cures, then ran them past Dr Deborah Lee, of Dr Fox Online Pharmacy who clarified whether these really are the real deal.

Some could actually make a difference, and some are just a load of old baloney. So be sure to read this thoroughly before your next drinking sesh. Your hangover will thank you for it.

Before your night out…

1. Take milk thistle to avoid a hangover

Milk thistle is supposed to help protect your liver from the toxic effects of alcohol breakdown products, so a lot of people recommend taking a milk thistle tablet before you start drinking, and also the next day too. But, unfortunately there’s a not a whole lot of medical proof to it, so maybe take this with a pinch of salt. Not literally, mind you…

Buy milk thistle now!

2. Don’t go out on an empty stomach

This is a no-brainer, but eating beforehand can help you avoid a hangover. According to the NHS website, have a meal that includes carbohydrates (such as pasta or rice) or fats as this will help to slow down your body’s absorption of alcohol.

During your night out…

3. Avoid drinks with congeners to avoid a hangover

Congeners are toxic chemical by-products, which are formed in small amounts when alcohol is made. A number of studies have shown that the more congeners in a drink, the worse your hangover will be. So, it’s worth keeping in mind that vodka, gin and rum are low in congeners (vodka contains hardly any). While tequila, whiskey and cognac are all high in congeners, with bourbon containing the highest amount.

4. Choose non-fizzy drinks to avoid a hangover

The bubbles in fizzy drinks can speed up the absorption of alcohol into your body, so if you want to limit your drunkenness, and potential hangover, it might be worth switching tonic water and Coke for orange juice or cranberry juice. Same goes for fizzy booze like Prosecco and Champagne. Soz.

5. Drink plenty of water to avoid a hangover

Many hangover symptoms are due to your body being dehydrated, so it’s best to top up your water intake as much as possible – not only the morning after, but also during your booze sesh, too. Every so often, switch out an alcoholic drink for a pint of water.

After all, it’s mostly the dehydration making you feel dizzy, tired and thirsty during a hangover. Plus, it’s what has given you a headache that feels like your brain has tripled in size but your cranium hasn’t.

The morning after the night before…

6. Eat a big breakfast to avoid a hangover

Some of the main symptoms of a hangover are nausea, weakness and simply being damn tired. These can all be attributed your low blood sugar. A good way to increase your blood sugar is by having a big ol’ plate of food when you finally manage to unpeel your dry eyelids from your dry eyeballs.

“Having too much alcohol on board also upsets the balance of the good and bad bacteria in your intestines,” according to Dr Deborah Lee. “It really is true that alcohol can cause a ‘leaky gut’. Get on and put some healthy nourishing food inside you!”

May we recommend a healthy breakfast burrito, an English breakfast traybake or breakfast stuffed mushrooms?

7. Say no to caffeine to avoid a hangover

This might sound crazy, seeing as one of the worst things about being hungover is the outrageous tiredness, but avoiding caffeine will help you kick your hangover to the curb.

Yes, an enormous 50-shot coffee will momentarily make you feel better, but you have to remember that caffeine is a dehydrator, so you’ll basically just end up back at square one.

Maybe try a different hot drink instead…

8. Have a cup of ginger tea to avoid a hangover

For years, ginger has been used in Chinese medicine as an anti-nausea treatment. And a 2016 study concluded that the plant is “an effective and inexpensive treatment for nausea”.

And two published studies have reported that ginger is as effective as the drug Metoclopramide, which is regularly used for this, at preventing nausea and vomiting.

So, a cup of ginger tea is just the thing if you’re struggling to keep your Coco Pops down the morning after the night before.

9. Rehydration sachets to cure a hangover

If simply drinking water isn’t hitting the spot, you can always try a rehydration sachet. These are usually taken when someone is dehydrated because of diarrhoea and/or sickness to get the salts you lose back in your system. When mixed with water, they can go a long way to replace lost fluids. Sports drinks like Lucozade also work in the same way.

“Don’t underestimate the importance of being adequately hydrated,” says Dr Lee. “Severe dehydration can lead to more serious illnesses in the long run.”

10. Drink fruit juice to cure a hangover

As well as drinking plenty of water to get your hydration levels back up, it’s also a good idea to drink fresh fruit juice or smoothies. These will give you back the vitamins you so desperately need to recover.

11. Take painkillers to avoid a hangover

Painkillers can help with headaches and muscle cramps gained from a hangover, says the NHS.

Paracetamol is your best bet, especially a soluble one as it will get into your bloodstream quicker, and we all know that speed is key in times of need like this.

But avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen together as these can irritate an already sensitive stomach.

Giphy

12. Try antacids to avoid a hangover

If you’re suffering from a funky belly as well as a splitting headache, give antacids a go. The likes of Rennie or Alka-Seltzer will help settle your stomach.

13. Sleep to avoid a hangover

The reason you feel so knackered after a night out is that, even though you think you got enough sleep, you didn’t.

There’s a good chance you went to bed late, and even the sleep you got will have been disturbed because of the alcohol in your system.

So, if you can, try and take a nap. If you’re at work, you may have to hide in the cleaner’s cupboard and do it, but trust us, it’s worth it.

Giphy

14. Do some exercise to cure a hangover

Look, no one wants to hear this, but doing some light exercise will really help if you’re feeling less-than-fresh.

Seeing as alcohol can depress your mood, exercise will bring back some of those endorphins; helping to automatically improve how you feel.

WHAT DOESN’T WORK:

Hair of the dog does not cure a hangover

Drinking more booze will not get rid of your hangover, it will simply postpone it. Yes, you may momentarily feel better while drinking that Bloody Mary, but it won’t last long.

Keri Peterson, M.D, said: “The infamous ‘hair of the dog that bit you’ cocktail doesn’t cure a hangover — It merely postpones it until later in the day.

“That’s because hangovers set in when blood-alcohol levels start to fall. The worst symptoms begin when the levels drop to zero.

“If you keep drinking, it may buy you some time and help you make it through brunch, but once you stop, it’s going to hit you hard. Now you’re hungover from both a night and morning of drinking.”

Sadly, Dr Lee adds, “Despite extensive research, there is still no cure for a hangover! The only salient advice – sadly – is to limit alcohol intake.”

As always, it’s always important to be Drinkaware. Excessively drinking alcohol comes with a number of health risks. If you’re a regular drinker it’s important to remember:

    • do not drink more than 14 units a week.
    • spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week.
    • if you want to cut down, try to have several alcohol-free days each week.

5 Effective Remedies That’ll Get You Through the Morning

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

    You can thank us later.

So, you’re hungover. We’d congratulate you on a successful night, but we’re fairly certain you knew that already. If you’re suffering from one of the following hangover symptoms, among others, you’ve come to the right place:

    • Fatigue
    • Thirst (dehydration)
    • Headache and/or sensitivity to light and sound
    • Weakness, muscle aches, or sweating
    • Nausea, stomach pain, or vertigo

Did you know that it can take up to 72 hours for you to feel relatively normal, depending on how much you had to drink? Yeah, ain’t nobody got time for that! Let’s find you some of the best hangover cures out there.

Now, what are the best hangover cures, you may ask? Well, coming from personal experience (hello, college!), we always suggest rest and patience as the best hangover remedies. But you’re not looking for that, right? You need something that’ll work sooner rather than later. Below are five of the best hangover cures and remedies that’ll help ease the pain and (hopefully) get you back up and in working order in no time. You’re welcome.

Oh, and one more thing: not every “cure” listed below is a one-hat-fits-all scenario. Everyone is different, so you’ll have to find what works best for you and may even need to combine a few of these for the best results. May the odds be ever in your favor.

    Water. Water. Water.

It seems rather obvious, we know. But you’d be surprised at how many people forget to drink water after a night of drinking, only to wake up hungover and miserable. Make sure you’ve got a water bottle handy, ’cause you’re gonna need it.

It’s also suggested that you drink water while you’re drinking, not just after. Try rotating between a glass of water and a drink throughout the night. Not only will this help you stay hydrated (as much as possible), it may even help alleviate those dreaded hangover symptoms before they start.

    Avoid Pain Relievers, Take Vitamins

It may seem like the perfect solution, but over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen and Tylenol, may have side effects that become more apparent with alcohol in your system. Instead, take your vitamins.

“Alcohol depletes a broad range of vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, enzymes, proteins and minerals from your body,” said Carolyn Dean, MD, a diet and nutrition expert and author. Your body will see a decrease in these vitamins, and this, in turn, will aggravate your hangover symptoms.

    Bacon and Eggs

Yep, your favorite go-to breakfast items may be just the thing you need to help with that killer hangover! Who knew?

According to research, scientists have found that bacon and eggs both have cysteine, an amino acid that could decrease the amount of acetaldehyde in your body, which can enter your blood and damage “your membranes and possibly causing scar tissue.”

    Cool Off in the Shower

Nothing will make you feel clean and refreshed like a cool shower! This will not only wake you up, but it’ll improve your circulation, reduces inflammation in your muscles, and more. Hangovercure.com has a list of the pros and cons of taking a shower for a hangover, and it’s definitely worth a read!

    Get Up and Moving

We know. This is probably the last thing you want to be doing right now. Exercise, in general, is good for you, and that’s equally true when it comes to curing a hangover. Don’t feel pressured to work up a sweat or push yourself too hard, but at least take a short walk outside. This can do wonders to help ease your symptoms!

Noted hangover remedy DHM has added benefit of protecting the liver

A well-known hangover drug not only helps soothe pounding headaches but also triggers profound changes that protect the liver, USC scientists report in new findings that could help prevent alcohol-related harm.

Hovenia dulcis — known as the Japanese raisin tree — is the source of dihydromyricetin (DHM), which can help the body metabolize alcohol faster. (Illustration/Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini)

The study focuses on dihydromyricetin (DHM), also known as ampelopsin, an over-the-counter herbal remedy. When researchers at the USC School of Pharmacy sought to understand how it works, their investigation revealed a sequence of metabolic changes responsible not only for easing headaches but also benefitting the liver.

“We know DHM helps the body to metabolize alcohol faster, but how does it work? We found it activates a cascade of mechanisms that erase alcohol from the body very quickly,” said Jing Liang, a research professor of clinical pharmacy and the corresponding author of the study.

The study appears today in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

The findings support the utility of DHM as a dietary supplement to offset acute alcohol-related effects as well as long-term risks. In addition, the authors say the substance likely has wider applications to help people cope with binge drinking, alcoholism and liver damage.

Alcohol use disorders constitute the most common form of substance abuse. About 88,000 people die of alcohol-related deaths annually — the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Globally, alcohol consumption contributes to 3 million deaths each year and is responsible for 5.1% of the global burden of disease, according to the World Health Organization. There is no effective therapeutic agent for the disorder without major side effects.

Meanwhile, excessive alcohol consumption is a significant cause of chronic liver disease, accounting for nearly half of the cirrhosis-associated deaths in the United States, according to the study.

Understanding how DHM can prevent hangovers and protect livers

DHM is derived from fruit from the Japanese raisin tree (Hovenia dulcis), which is native to Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia and now commercially grown. It’s been used in China for liver ailments for 500 years, but how the substance works is unclear.

Daryl Davies, Joshua Silva and Jing Liang, from left, worked on the study. (Photo/Isaac Mora)

To better understand what the drug does inside the body, the scientists fed 36 mice a daily diet of alcohol for two months, gradually increasing doses to 30% of their total food intake for an average of 39.4 g/kg of ethanol per day per mouse. Then, they assessed their livers for injury and markers of stress.

The researchers focused on the liver, Liang said, because when you take a drink, alcohol circulates through the bloodstream. Though the alcohol affects the brain, it is metabolized primarily by the liver, which is significantly harmed by long-term, high levels of alcohol consumption.

“It’s like stepping on a tack; your brain says it hurts. During a hangover, the fogginess in your brain is an acute reaction to what’s going on in your body,” said Daryl Davies, a study co-author and professor of clinical pharmacy in the USC School of Pharmacy.

Among other significant effects, the scientists found that DHM:

    • Triggered the liver to produce more ethanol-gobbling enzymes, including alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH).
    • Boosted the efficiency of ADH and ALDH, enabling the enzymes to convert ethanol into simpler forms the body can eliminate easier.
    • Reduced lipid (fat) accumulation in liver tissue. Heavy doses of alcohol can negatively affect the liver’s metabolism, leading to an accumulation of fat, increased stress and the eventual progression to liver diseases such as cirrhosis.
    • Reduced inflammatory agents, called cytokines. Excessive alcohol leads to the release of cytokines in the liver, which contributes to cellular damage to the liver and other organs.

“In total, these findings support the utility of DHM as a dietary supplement to reduce ethanol-induced liver injury via changes in lipid metabolism, enhancement of ethanol metabolism and suppressing inflammation responses to promote liver health,” the study said. “This line of research suggests that DHM acts on multiple pathways to promote liver health and counteract ethanol injury.”

Davies, who is also director of the Alcohol and Brain Research Laboratory at USC, said the findings also help explain how DHM works as a hangover treatment. The liver converts alcohol into an aldehyde with properties like formaldehyde, which contribute to headache and nausea. Since it takes about one hour for the body to metabolize one drink, a night of heavy drinking causes the liver to keep churning out the chemicals that make people feel woozy for so long.

“We now know what [DHM] is doing and how it’s doing it mechanically, activating a cascade of energy-regulating mechanisms that speed metabolism of ethanol and its byproducts,” said Joshua Silva, a doctoral student at the USC School of Pharmacy and study co-author.

New research could help protect liver from alcohol abuse

The findings have important implications for helping prevent liver damage and harm from alcohol abuse.

For example, binge drinkers could use DHM for its liver protection properties, extending the function of the organ long enough for the person to get help and stop their bad drinking habit. “We may not be able to fix their problem overnight, but we can give them step-by-step improvements to help them drink less and gain health protection,” Davies said.

Binge drinking is a serious problem for young adults, especially college students. About 37% of students engage in binge drinking — five or more drinks on a single occasion for men or four or more drinks for women — and about 10% engage in heavy alcohol use — binge drinking on 5 or more days in the past month. Those rates are much higher than among non-college peers, according to a recent survey by the National Institutes of Health. Excessive alcohol consumption significantly contributes to higher rates of alcohol-related liver disease at a younger age.

Excessive drinking has high social and economic costs, leading to heart disease, high blood pressure, unplanned pregnancies, violence and vehicle crashes. The CDC estimates the total economic cost at $249 billion annually.

DHM could potentially help patients who go to the doctor with early warning signs of liver damage. The substance could be used to help restore and prolong their liver function and delay the onset of liver disease while waiting for a transplant. DHM could also prove useful for liver transplant patients to help the new organ perform better so patients could enjoy a better quality of life.

“There’s hope here. It could be a new lease on life for a lot of people,” Davies said.

The study authors are Joshua Silva, Xin Yu, Renita Moradian, Carson Folk, Maximilian H. Spatz, Phoebe Kim, Adil A. Bhatti, Daryl L. Davies and Jing Liang of the USC School of Pharmacy.

The work was supported by funding and grants from the National Institutes of Health — National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (R01AA022448), USC Good Neighbors Campaign, USC School of Pharmacy, American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education and More Labs.

Do Hangover Pills Work? A Guide To Popular OTC Hangover Supplements

Wouldn’t it be great if you could have all the inhibition-breaking fun that downing more than a few glasses of wine or champagne brings without the headachy, stomach-turning, kill-me-now pain of a hangover?

Well, according to the promises of so-called hangover pills like Bytox, Cheers, Blowfish, Liquid IV, Morning Recovery, and Flyby, you can. Hangover pills, powders, and patches all claim to drastically cut back on the icky feelings of a hangover by packing hangover-fixing ingredients like vitamins, electrolytes, caffeine, pain relievers like Aspirin, and more. But do hangover pills really work?

To dig into this, you first have to understand what a hangover is, and what causes it.

But that’s actually pretty complicated, and even scientists who’ve dedicated themselves to researching hangovers don’t have a clear answer about what causes one (other than drinking too much), according to the Alcohol Hangover Research Group. There simply isn’t much research on hangovers available.

A paper in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism called hangovers “a puzzling phenomenon.” Right now, the best scientific answer available regarding what causes a hangover is that many different things combine to cause the symptoms we feel after an alcohol binge, including: dehydration, hormonal alterations, dysregulated cytokine pathways (cytokines help play a role in reducing inflammation, so it’s no good when those pathways get messed up), and, in general, the toxic effects of alcohol.

As WH reported previously, ethanol (a type of alcohol in booze) impacts the body and brain and messes with a lot of your physiological systems. The liver has to process ethanol and its toxic byproduct, acetaldehyde. And as a result, your blood sugar levels are disrupted and your body gets flooded with inflammatory compounds, Stacy Sims, PhD, an exercise physiologist and nutrition researcher and WH advisor, previously told WH.

You also might be eating and sleeping poorly when you drink—leading you to feel crappy in the morning. Or, the mixers used in whatever alcohol you drank can also play a part in how you feel the morning after, according to the aforementioned research paper. That’s also one reason why it’s difficult to actually study hangovers—drinking in a lab by no means mimics playing a drinking game with your friends.

This lack of research is one reason that no scientifically proven hangover cure exists.

If we don’t know exactly what causes a hangover, there’s no foolproof way to develop a cure. Yet, lots of people have anecdotal evidence about things that help. Some people swear by pickle juice, some say to indulge in “hair of the dog” (aka, another drink in the morning, like a Bloody Mary), and some folks now buy those hangover pills in bulk because they feel like the supplements take some of the edge off.

Some of what helps your hangover may have to do with the placebo phenomenon—that if you believe it’s helping, then it just might make a difference for you.

This debate of “does it work or not for hangovers?” also comes up often with hangover drinks, or ones packed with electrolytes (think: Pedialyte or Gatorade). And the same issue comes into play: Unless you know for sure the cause of the hangover, it’s kinda tough to know if vitamins, electrolytes, and other ingredients in drinks or supplements would help fix the underlying problem.

For example: “If the reason for your hangover really is related to electrolytes being out of balance, then perhaps replacing them could be helpful,” Ginger Hultin, RD, a Seattle-based registered dietitian, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and owner of ChampagneNutrition, previously told WH. “It’s very hard to know if this is the cause of a hangover unless your doctor is analyzing a blood test.”

But hey, there’s lots of power in the placebo effect—and there’s also still a chance that hangover pills are actually doing something right.

According to many of the descriptions on these supplements and patches, hangover pills include many of the same ingredients in a “banana bag,” an IV bag full of vitamins and electrolytes that has been used in hospitals to treat people who come in with alcohol poisoning.

Banana bags typically include: thiamine (also known as vitamin B1), magnesium, folic acid, and some mix of other vitamins. While a banana bag isn’t considered a hangover “cure,” doctors do use it to replace essential electrolytes and vitamins that get lost after a night of heavy drinking and it’s said to cut back on the head-pounding and nausea.

Following in the banana bag’s footprint, hangover supplements like Bytox and Morning Recovery use similar ingredients. Bytox includes lots of different B vitamins as well as folic acid, while Morning Recovery has some lesser-known extracts (e.g., green tea or Korean pear extract), but also more legit-sounding ingredients like vitamin B, potassium, and magnesium.

Another example: One of the most popular tablet options, Blowfish, features caffeine and Aspirin, so if you have a headache, there’s def a chance those ingredients would help you out. But would it help a nauseous, upset belly? Tough to say.

Overall, you’d be hard-pressed to find a doctor or dietitian who would say hangover supplements are a cure—but there’s also probably no big harm in trying these supplements for yourself. For the most part, doctors will tell you that the only way to get over a hangover is to wait it out and drink lots of water.

But if you want to try anything and everything to feel even a little bit better, go for it—as long as you check with your doc to make sure none of the ingredients in a hangover supplement will interact badly with any other meds you’re on. And remember, supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA—so proceed at your own risk.

Maybe you’ll be out a few bucks if they don’t work, and maybe they’ll make you feel 1,000 times better in half the time. The jury is out.

The hangover pills, patches, and powders ahead are the ones that people have anecdotally deemed the best hangover pills of 2019. Find your best match.

Blowfish for Hangovers – 25 Single Packs

    Blowfish for Hangovers
    amazon.com

    $59.99

What it is: Tablets that dissolve in water and are designed to start helping your hangover in 15 minutes. You pop two in a glass of water, and it tastes lemony. It’s the only hangover supplement that is approved by the FDA.

How to use it: Take it in the morning when you wake up with a hangover.

Main ingredients: Aspirin and caffeine (so it’s kind of like just popping an Aspirin with a cup of coffee).

Who it’s for: Someone with a bad hangover headache. It also might be helpful for anyone who can’t stomach coffee in the morning but craves the caffeine kick to help with head pain. If you’re someone who doesn’t tolerate caffeine well, Blowfish probably isn’t for you.

Honest Amazon review: “OK, the truth is if you drink a bottle of tequila and try to go to work on 3 hours of sleep, ain’t nothing going to help. However, if you are like me and sometimes have too much fun during the week and find yourself getting home at one in the morning feeling great only having to wake up in four hours and face a school full of kids, then you need Blowfish. Look, nothing medically will ‘cure’ a hangover, but Blowfish will make you feel better. No, you aren’t going to suddenly do cartwheels because you miraculously instantly feel better. But you know what, when 30-40 minutes later you are at work and not thinking about how bad you feel that’s the moment when you realize, wow, I guess that stuff did it’s job. I also work in a bar so I heard about this stuff when it first came out and I’ve been using it for months. It has a nice smoothing taste which allows me to get it down. I often wouldn’t take aspirin in the morning because it alone would make me throw up.”

What it is: A sticky patch that you put on your body that’s packed with vitamins and minerals that get released in order to supposedly help prevent a hangover.

How to use it: Stick a patch on (to a hairless part of your body!) at least 45 minutes *before* you start drinking, then leave it on for at least 8 hours post-drinking. Stay hydrated the whole time, too.

Main ingredients: Acai berry, vitamin A, a cocktail of various B vitamins (B12, folic acid, etc.), green tea extract. The thinking is that alcohol is a diuretic that depletes nutrients and vitamins from your bod, so this patch in theory would help you avoid that depletion. Oh, and green tea extract is, well, caffeine.

Who it’s for: Because the ingredients in Bytox are natural, anyone should be okay to try these, for the most part. But be careful if you have sensitive skin, as the adhesive on these patches may be irritating. And if you have a sensitive nose, apparently these have a bit of an odd scent.

Honest Amazon review: “Used it 3 times so far, and each time woke up feeling great. Just had one of those nights when you wake up with your clothes on from yesterday, and now i’m writing this review. Just ordered 2 more packs, and will make sure i’m stocked. It smells like vitamins, and you’ll still be a little tired depending on how much you sleep, but no severe hangover symptoms at all.”

Flyby Hangover Cure & Prevention Pills (30 Capsules) – Dihydromyricetin (DHM), Chlorophyll, Prickly Pear, N-Acetyl-Cysteine, Milk Thistle for Morning After Alcohol Recovery & Aid – Certified Organic

What it is: Pills that pack vitamins and are designed to work preventively to avoid a bad hangover.

How to use it: You take three capsules with water right before you go out and then another three capsules right before going to sleep.

Main ingredients: Chlorophyll, B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, folic acid, pantothenic acid and B12), and magnesium.

Who it’s right for: These pills are gluten-free and vegan, so if you fall into those camps, Flyby might be your best bet. Some reviews also point out that it seems to work (at least anecdotally) for those who drink wine, as opposed to spirits and/or beer.

Honest Amazon review: “Used the product/pills for the first time this past weekend. Had 3 beers and 2 vodka and clubs between 630PM and 10PM. Took 3 pills before drinking with a big glass or water and then took another 3 before bed with a big glass of water. These pills didn’t help at all with feeling hungover the next morning. Always hope that there is a magic pill for feeling like garbage the night after drinking but once again disappointed that there’s not! I have a friend that drinks mostly wine and he said that they help? So maybe there’s a connection with wine and these helping but they didn’t help with beer and vodka.”

    Cheers (Formerly Thrive+) Hangover Cure

What it is: A pill that’s designed to be an after-alcohol aid (similar to Flyby). The company also makes a powder electrolytes supplement, if that’s more you’re thing—but the after-alcohol aid is the most popular item. The company conducted a human study for its granted patent, and the people in the study who used the pills felt an average of 50 percent better the next day across eight symptoms (headaches, nausea, poor focus, low energy, etc.) than the people who didn’t.

How to use it: Take two to four capsules right after your last beverage, or right before bed after your night of drinking.

Main ingredients: Vitamins B, C, & E, electrolytes, dihydromyricetin (which is said to promote liver health), milk thistle, prickly pear

Who it’s right for: Anyone who doesn’t mind taking pills and spending $ on supps.

Honest Amazon review: “I was skeptical, but the ingredients all have published scientific studies backing them so I figured for roughly $3.00 per hangover, I’ll give it a try. (I would pay $300 to get rid of some of my hangovers). Drank heavily, took 3 caps at night before bed. Usually wake up with heart palpitations, nausea, sweating, headache etc. used twice so far and I have only woken up tired. You definitely still feel like you drank, but this is the absolute only product I’ve tried that has quelled the symptoms of a hangover. A must have, from someone in the medical field.”

Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier, Electrolyte Powder, Easy Open Packets, Supplement Drink Mix (Lemon Lime, 16 Count)

    Liquid I.V.
    amazon.com

    $24.99

What it is: This Amazon bestseller (it has over 2,500 positive reviews) is an electrolyte powder designed to help with hydration. It’s not marketed as a hangover fix specifically, and many athletes use it for hydration purposes.

How to use it: Pour a packet into a glass or bottle of water, mix it, and drink. Enjoy it before going out and/or when you wake up feeling like crap.

Main ingredients: Electrolytes, B vitamins, and vitamin C

Who it’s right for: Someone who is dehydrated after drinking, or anyone who wants to hydrate and get a boost of vitamins and minerals.

Honest Amazon review: “This stuff will wipe out a hangover in no time!! Also if you play intense sports or sweat a ton in the gym, this will help you hydrate afterward. The taste is kind of like a saltier version of yellow Gatorade. Best way I can describe it. It’s not the best tasting stuff but it works a lot better than Gatorade or the other leading sports drinks out there. It should go without saying, but you will need to drink water in conjunction. If you only drink this mixed with water, it will just dehydrate you because of all the salt. This product is designed to help you retain more of the water you drink.”

    Morning Recovery

    Morning Recovery
    amazon.com

    $35.99

What it is: A bottled beverage with a lemon taste, designed to either help prevent hangover symptoms or alleviate them once they’ve started.

How to use it: Drink a full bottle right before your first drink, between drinks, or up to one hour after your last drink.

Main ingredients: Dihydromyricetin, electrolytes, milk thistle

Who it’s right for: Anyone who would prefer to sip something lemony (without having to make it yourself) over popping a pill or wearing a patch.

Honest Amazon review: “Hands down the best hangover prevention I have sampled – it has me drinking like a college freshman on probation again. Typically after a night of heavy drinking, I tend to binge watching clips of the Olympics to remind myself what energetic people look like. But one serving of this bad boy before I go out, and I don’t have to cancel my plans because I went out the night before. Not only that, but this product has dynamically changed my recovery process. I used to seek shelter in fried food and unholy volumes of soup. But that is in the past – I am no longer at the whims of my sensitive stomach because I can avoid being hungover all together. Trust me when I tell you, the other products don’t hold a candle to this weekend saving elixir.”

Unlikely hangover cures [try these 3 things including a hangover pill] + a magic wand to avoid wine hangovers

Most of us have been there before, especially on vacation, you have a few too many and wake up feeling like you were run over by a truck. Of course the best advice is to pace yourself, hydrate and take ibuprofen BEFORE heading to bed. That doesn’t always happen, as we all know. The raging headache and sluggish feeling is the result of our bodies trying to force out the alcohol from our bodies.

So, if you do wake up with a horrible hangover and can’t spend the day in bed sleeping it off, here are a couple options.

    1. Try Sprite to help with your hangover.

New research shows that it really helps to alleviate a hangover, even more than dark sodas. It promotes breakdown of something called acetaldehyde which causes the horrible hangover feeling.

    2. Asparagus – Sure, not the first thing you think of when you wake up, but this vegetable can be a surprisingly good trick for curing a nasty hangover.

Contrary to the greasy burger and fries many of us use to get rid of the horrible feeling in our stomach from hangovers, Asparagus can help rid us of the hangover effect sooner. While it may not be the go to food item when waking up from a hangover, it sure does help.

    Roasted Asparagus and Poached Egg

So, for years my hangover cure has been a greasy cheeseburger. Not the healthiest option but it sure does make me feel better. I’ve never tried those pills, but I’ve heard they work ok too.

According to some Korean researchers when liver cells are exposed to asparagus extract, they found that they more than doubled activity in the two enzymes that metabolize alcohol. In English: Asparagus helps you sober up quicker.

I’ve never used it to combat a hangover, but hey, if it works I’ll give it a try. And, it is much healthier than my usual hangover cure. Here’s my recipe for some quick and simple asparagus:

1 Bunch of Asparagus (tips cut off)
    Olive Oil
    Thyme
    Salt and Pepper

Wash and dry the asparagus bunch. Take one stalk and bend near the bottom. Wherever it breaks, that is where you should trim the entire bunch. Lay the trimmed bunch flat on an pan and coat with olive oil. Sprinkle with thyme, salt and pepper over the bunch and roll around on the pan to make sure spices are evenly distributed. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 -12 minutes.

    3. Water – Alcohol dehydrates you, so water will help.

The best way to avoid hangovers too is to drink a glass of water in between drinks. But we often forget to do that. The next best thing is pounding a glass of water and ibuprofen before you go to sleep. The next bet thing after that is to drink plenty of water when you get up the next morning if you’ve got a hangover.

Bonus tip: Don’t get a hangover. No I’m not being a smart ass, read on. There’s a magic wand to cure wine hangovers plus there’s a hangover cure vitamin pill you can take after a nigh of drinking.

Avoid a wine hangover with these magic wands!

Did you know there are many things that can prevent a hangover from happening. Yes, above, I stated drinking plenty of water before, during and after drinking. I can do the before and after but when I’m out enjoying cocktails and maybe some wine, I am terrible about trying to get a glass of water in between drinks. That is what is best recommended to simply avoid getting a hangover in the first place. But this is one thing that is a lot easier said than done.

Okay, well at least if you are a wine lover, here is a way to avoid those nasty wine hangovers. With PureWine filters, you can quickly remove the histamines and sulfites — the culprits behind those awful headaches the day after wine consumption. You just stir the wand in the wine prior to drinking and it rids it of the sulfites and histamines that can cause those awful wine hangovers. They are totally safe –  made from BPA-free, food-grade plastics. The filters contain absorbent beads made from nano-pore™ resins that absorb histamines and sulfites without releasing any chemicals back into the wine.

These magic wands come in four packs and cost $9.99. Oh and don’t worry about storing the or even losing them because they are disposable.

Another way to avoid a hangover is to take H-Proof hangover cure pill (as seen on Shark Tank)!

H-Proof is a patent pending vitamin that helps avoid hangover. It was invented by a mother-daughter duo, Linda and Rachel Kaplan. Linda is an MD and Rachel is the one with the business acumen.

How does H-Proof vitamin chewable work to prevent / cure a hangover?

We all know the liver processes alcohol. Enzymes in the liver turn alcohol into harmful substances. Ever wonder why you were able to sleep off that hangover and wake up fully rested when you were younger, but later in life that doesn’t seem to happen? The reason is we make fewer of these enzymes as we age and that leads to more toxins in our system. More toxins = worse hangover. The H-Proof chewables make more of those enzymes so we wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

I tried this hangover cure pill / vitamin and here’s my experience:

I tried H-Proof hangover vitamin cure and it worked!

My go to drink is wine. I love to open up a bottle of red and enjoy it while finishing up the day or watching a show. Into my mid-30s that was not problem to have up to 3 glasses of wine and sleep restfully, but all that changed when I turned 38. If I have more than 1.5 glasses of wine or 1 cocktail + 1 glass of wine I wake up in the middle of the night in a sweat (the first time it happened I thought I was going through menopause) and wide awake for hours. Then the next day I am foggy and have a full on headache that requires a ton of Ibuprofen.

So, I tried H-Proof and here’s what happened. Remember, H-proof is a vitamin that helps replenish the enzymes that we lose as we age. I did wake up in the middle of the night and I was hot, however, this hangover side effect was much more dull than it has been in the past. I was only up for a short amount of time (like 30 minutes) and I fell back asleep. Other time I would be wide awake for 2-3 hours. Then when I did wake up I felt well rested. In the past a middle of the night wake up session meant full on sweats and insomnia.

I’m thrilled to have discovered H-Proof. It is recommended to chew it and let it dissolve in your mouth after your last drink. I thought it tasted just fine. And the best part was that I work up with NO Hangover residue / side effects and felt great all day. H-Proof costs $39.50 for a ten pack and is available on Amazon.

Here’s what to avoid if you are nursing a hangover.

Herbal teas might seem to be harmless and soothing even. But avoid them if you are nursing a hangover. In this case research suggests they are working against our bodies in fighting a hangover. While the chemical acetaldehyde is broken down by sodas like Sprite, it is found that herbal teas help to increase production of this.

Now, you know! What’s your go to hangover cure?

How we are treated for a hangover

Let’s first figure out what kind of enemy we have to fight. The word “hangover” in Russia can refer to two different states. One of them is alcohol withdrawal syndrome, or withdrawal syndrome (in the English-language scientific literature it is called withdrawal syndrome ), which occurs when a person develops alcohol dependence. As a drug, alcohol affects our dopamine system, which is associated with internal “reward” (although not yet fully understood, directly or indirectly). When a person stops receiving it, he will feel bad: sweating, dry mouth, anxiety, heart palpitations appear, and all these symptoms (which vary depending on the stage of alcoholism) are temporarily relieved when the patient receives a new “dose” – he gets drunk. As a result, a person can go into a binge. It is wrong to call such a state a hangover, and articles on popular science sites cannot be saved from it – a competent narcologist should treat chronic alcoholism, sometimes hospitalization is required to remove all the temptations to take alcohol again.

We’ll talk about a condition that is scientifically called Veisalgia (from the Norwegian “discomfort from abuse” and the Greek “pain”). It occurs in people who do not currently suffer from chronic alcoholism. A person who has gone overboard will feel nausea, headache, dry mouth, fatigue, weakness in the morning, which can also be accompanied by a disgusting mood. This is a hangover in the correct sense of the word – poisoning with the decay products of ethanol, to which the notorious fusel oils, which are abundant in unrefined and low-quality alcoholic beverages, can add problems.

Ethyl alcohol or ethanol enters the body with alcoholic beverages. The popular idea that in your body it is produced by itself and for something you really need, turned out to be wrong – at least if you are not yeast. However, many microorganisms live in the human intestine, and some of them (including yeast) actually produce ethanol. True, in very modest quantities – about three grams per day. However, there are exceptions: in some individuals, yeast produces too much ethanol, and they constantly feel drunk, which can be cured by antifungal drugs and a low-carb diet.In addition, our ancestors often encountered this substance when they came across fermented fruits. So, they needed a system to neutralize alcohol. And such a system appeared.

The liver is on guard of the body

We have the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which converts the substance acetaldehyde into alcohol in the same yeast, on the contrary, it breaks down ethanol to acetaldehyde.

    Questions and Answers – Narcology

Removing from a drunken state is sometimes fraught with serious difficulties and dangers.Getting out of a binge is not always an easy and simple process. Most often – to remove this condition with the smallest consequences – you will need the help of a narcologist. Everything is important here, because even local success, when it was possible to hide a bottle or isolate a long-drinking person, does not at all imply a way out.

Subject and method of treatment of hard drinking

Violent methods of eliminating binge often do not succeed – such a refusal to take alcoholic beverages, in some cases, can even lead to an exacerbation of the condition – the development of alcoholic psychosis. Here it is necessary to immediately clarify that in situations where there is a multi-day clique of hard drinking, even without obvious pathological symptoms, the occurrence of alcoholic delirium is quite a frequent occurrence. Because a long binge, not only chronic alcohol poisoning, but also an exacerbation of alcoholism of psychiatric etiology.

The subject of binge treatment is withdrawal symptoms, in the literature you can still find the names alcohol withdrawal, alcohol withdrawal syndrome and even hangover syndrome. In order to avoid the confusion arising among the layman, doctors prefer the latter term – not to use the hangover syndrome, because there is a fundamental difference between a hangover and a binge. The easiest way to describe this difference is that binge drinking occurs only in an alcoholic, in this state he simultaneously cannot live without alcohol and at the same time is so poisoned by it that he is no longer able to drink without obvious consequences that may even threaten him with death. A hangover is just a temporary reaction to alcoholic excesses, which completely disappears in about a day, even in the absence of any intervention.

The main method of withdrawal from hard drinking, which is used by narcologists and toxicologists, is the use of a dropper with a medicinal solution for slow intravenous infusion. Medicines, drugs and medicines, to relieve withdrawal symptoms are selected individually, taking into account all indications, a huge role in this is played by the qualifications and experience of the doctor who performs this manipulation. This, as well as timely seeking medical help in the event of such alcohol problems, will be the main secret of a successful recovery from binge drinking.

    Anti-binge detoxification therapy

Medical removal of binge even at home is preceded by a diagnosis. As a rule, before prescribing a procedure for stopping abstinence to a drunken alcoholic, the narcologist first takes an anamnesis, that is, a history of binge drinking, then proceeds to assess how physical parameters (they take an ECG, check the pulse – collects blood pressure readings, heart rate measurements, and so on), so is the mental criteria of the patient’s condition.

The essence of the method of excretion from hard drinking is the conduct of such detoxification therapy, which will be aimed at maintaining the body, weakened by prolonged intake of alcohol in the direction of accelerating the elimination of poisons, mainly products of the metabolism of ethyl alcohol. At the same time, drugs are introduced that intensify metabolic and restorative processes, due to which the general condition of the patient and his well-being improves. Naturally, detoxification therapy begins only when the doctor has checked that the patient has no contraindications to the use of drugs that must be administered.

The effectiveness of drug recovery from hard drinking is based mainly on accelerating the elimination of alcoholic toxins and their partial drug neutralization. Most importantly, reduce the concentration of acetaldehyde, a highly toxic metabolite of alcohol. Acetaldehyde exhibits strongly pronounced toxic properties, which are an order of magnitude higher than that of ethanol itself. Already in a small concentration, this toxin can cause serious consequences; in a person in a binge due to metabolism disturbed by alcohol, acetaldehyde accumulates in the body.

    Binge drip – prices

The price for alcohol disintoxication therapy is based on the prices for the services of a narcologist or toxicologist, and, of course, it also includes the cost of drugs for relieving alcohol withdrawal symptoms. In addition, the price of this service is strongly influenced by the place and time of the procedure to get rid of the consequences of prolonged drinking. For example, at night, specialized drug treatment is more expensive, but in Moscow, all other things being equal, compared to most other regions, drug treatment services will cost about 2 times more.

There is a possibility of getting medical help from a doctor for getting out of drinking binges for free, however, this also has a downside – drug registration, in addition, they do not dig it out at home for free – an ambulance will take the alcoholic to the hospital. The main difference between paid services for getting out of a drunken state from those guaranteed by the state is complete anonymity. Therefore, if there is such an opportunity, the price of getting out of the hard drinking will definitely be justified.

If we consider attempts to self-treat alcoholism and its exacerbation at home, the help of professionals in the first place can guarantee safety and a positive result. It is highly undesirable to try to save money with the help of traditional medicine methods, as well as psychic healers and the like – chronic alcohol poisoning does not lend itself to this.

What else is important to know about binge drinking treatment pricing? Usually, the cost of selecting and installing a drip system for the treatment of exacerbations of alcoholism in stationary conditions is regulated. It is determined on the basis of the severity of the disease (that is, the dependence on the stage of alcoholism in the patient), and the presence of complicating factors, such as chronic diseases.

    Detoxification at home

To carry out detoxification in the field of alcohol abuse right at home, you can now use the services of an on-site narcologist. As a rule, in any city it is quite simple to do this – you can call both the state drug treatment hospital and the private drug treatment clinic, provide the address and answer a few questions about the patient’s drinking binge, agree on the price, and that’s it. that an anonymous call has been made.At home, withdrawal from binge drinking is possible only in situations where pronounced complications of alcoholism have not been identified. In cases where the following contraindications to home treatment are found, it would be better not to resort even to outpatient treatment, but to immediately hospitalize the patient in a drug treatment center or hospital.

There are the following complications of binge drinking:

    • duration of binge drinking from 7 days or more;
    • bronchial asthma, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and some other chronic diseases in the patient;
    • if the binge has occurred in an elderly person over 60 years old;
    • symptoms of alcoholic psychosis.

According to all these criteria, surgical medical intervention is definitely required, since the state of binge seriously complicates the already disturbed mechanisms of life support. Alcoholic psychoses, in addition to posing a threat to the patient himself, are truly dangerous for the people around him. Under such circumstances, urgent hospitalization is an indispensable and prerequisite for subsequent recovery. Only in specially created conditions, it is possible to carry out high-quality treatment and reduce risks to a minimum, because in the case of psychosis from alcohol one dropper will not do.

    Stationary detoxification anti-alcohol therapy

Hospitalization of a patient suffering from alcoholism, in any case, has a number of advantages over treatment at home:

    • First of all, the possibility of constant monitoring and patient care should be canceled. If necessary, the treatment can be corrected at your favorite moment according to vital signs and on the basis of analyzes, which can be done promptly only with inpatient treatment.
    • It is important that a patient who agreed to be hospitalized relieves his own relatives from the need to monitor and nurture him. It is no secret that when a person drinks for many days in a row, this does not in the best way affect the patient’s family relations – and you cannot leave and endure such behavior, there is no more strength. Inpatient treatment provides such a necessary outlet and break.
    • Naturally, and it is very important, when a person receives real medical care, there is no need to worry about him. After all, the treatment that he will receive with stationary detoxification is definitely much better than the removal of hard drinking at home.

It should be admitted that the price of inpatient treatment for exacerbations of alcoholism is significantly higher. But this cost is justified from all positions, because for a patient with a heavy binge in the later stages of alcohol dependence, this is the only way out to return to a full life.

    Summing up

Detoxification therapy is not just a dropper for binge drinking, which, in order to save money, they are trying to do by bringing in a familiar nurse, paramedic or veterinarian.A safe and high-quality result is guaranteed only by a psychiatrist-narcologist. Even the correct setting of the drip system can help to achieve only a short-term result. This effect, in no case should be considered as a sufficient measure for the resumption of a sober normal life. Alcoholism is hardly amenable to even complex treatment in a specialized narcological hospital. And the conclusion from the hard drinking at home can only stop the withdrawal syndrome, although this is extremely necessary in order not only to improve the well-being of the drunken alcoholic, and to eliminate the real threat to his life.

This treatment, if limited to them, will have a short-term effect, and cannot be complex in nature. It should be understood that home treatment is applicable only in cases of non-severe and uncomplicated binge drinking. Frequent home use of IV drips can lead to detoxification abuse. The alcoholic patient may have the false belief that his problems are not serious, as they are easy to solve. This leads to the continued abuse of alcoholic beverages and alcohol, which only aggravates the course of alcohol dependence and its sad consequences. Not only is such an insufficient treatment at a cost more expensive than a stationary one, because the body after a dropper is far from being fully restored – sooner or later it will not work at all.

Alcohol metabolites, there are very strong toxins, in particular acetaldehyde in terms of toxicity comparable to hydrocyanic acid. Naturally, regular poisoning cannot be “corrected” with a dropper alone, long-term rehabilitation and an absolutely sober life are required for a long time, which should be measured in months, and preferably years. If this does not happen and booze returns after a week or less, the poisoning of the whole organism will greatly deplete its resources. Each organ in such a body requires a careful, individualized treatment program. And intravenous medication with an IV drip to treat alcohol withdrawal can only ease symptoms and give a short break. It is simply impossible to obtain a meaningful result with a single dropper: different and, in the overwhelming majority of cases, incompatible drugs are required.

It is impossible in the same dropper to make up the composition of liver diseases and at the same time treat the heart, pancreas and brain. The dropper stops the most pronounced signs of binge drinking, but is not able to treat the effects of alcoholism. Moreover, the very removal of the drunken state does not eliminate alcoholism, and even less does it consolidate the results of treatment.

Thus, a dropper used to get rid of binge drinking will be only the first step on the difficult path of overcoming alcohol dependence in a patient. It is difficult to call it the most responsible and important and it is clearly not worth resorting to it every week in hopes for the best. It is imperative to continue treatment at a new level (that is, go through the following stages), it is best to do this in a hospital setting. Naturally, with the voluntary consent and at the request of the alcoholic himself, to solve his problems with alcohol. Other attempts to get rid of alcoholism are doomed to failure in advance.

    How different hangover remedies work

Still, most would like to drink a lot, and get drunk slowly and feel good in the morning. How do the most famous sobering and anti-toxic methods work, and which one is more effective?

    Activated carbon

Activated carbon is a popular drug to combat alcohol intoxication. The principle of its action is that it is able to remove toxins that are in the digestive tract, as it can absorb them into itself. Activated carbon is not absorbed, and is completely excreted through the intestines, taking your luggage with you.You can take several charcoal tablets right before a meal, or while drinking alcoholic beverages. While alcohol is still in the stomach, it can be partially removed with charcoal, it all depends on the volume of alcohol consumed. However, it is ineffective to treat a hangover with activated charcoal: in this case, the main amount of poisons is in the blood and tissues.

    Cold shower

The invigorating effect of a cold shower is attributed to the activation of the sympathoadrenal system, peripheral vasoconstriction, and blood flow to the brain and heart. This increases metabolic activity, and undeoxidized foods are neutralized faster. But still, the speed of this process is determined by the capabilities of the organism, which is already weakened by alcohol.

    Pickle from a hangover

This is a classic remedy that works according to a simple principle: it restores the normal balance of electrolytes in the body. Alcohol dehydrates and promotes the excretion of salts in the urine. The brine contains dissolved salts of potassium, sodium and magnesium, and its consumption helps to improve the general condition. With the same success, you can drink mineral water with a high content of the necessary ions. But electrolyte restoration does not reduce the amount of alcoholic toxin in the body.

    Lemon juice

Often, lemon juice diluted with boiled water is used to reduce the intensity of intoxication, when a lot was drunk the day before, as well as to relieve hangover syndrome. Its main component is citric acid, which activates the Krebs cycle and cellular respiration. As a result, cells receive more oxygen, and the metabolic rate increases, which helps the body to oxidize the remaining alcohol in the blood and remove its decay products. It also quenches thirst and relieves symptoms of dehydration. In addition, lemons contain vitamin C and many other trace elements, the lack of which is acutely felt during a hangover due to the diuretic effect of alcohol.

    Succinic acid

Succinic acid is also a member of the Krebs cycle. The use of succinic acid promotes the activation of metabolism and helps to neutralize the under-oxidized product of the breakdown of alcohol – acetaldehyde – directly in the cells. Therefore, succinic acid helps with a hangover quickly and effectively. It enables the cells to get rid of toxins and get energy. If succinic acid is used simultaneously with citric acid, then the recovery rate increases, since citric acid takes over part of the work. Today, one of the most effective hangover remedies is Limontar ® – a drug that contains succinic and citric acids in the right proportion. Limontar ® is easy to use and safe, therefore it is recommended for self-treatment of a hangover.90,000 Hangovers – methods of treatment and control. Filtrum

    4. How to avoid a hangover

After excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, a hangover often occurs. It can be of varying severity, but any hangover is, in fact, poisoning, in which a person should be provided with appropriate medical care.Symptoms that may indicate serious disturbances in the body cannot be ignored.

    Causes

The main cause of a hangover is the intoxication of the body caused by drinking. If ethyl alcohol enters the body in too large quantities, then the liver cells are not able to completely break it down into carbon dioxide and water. As a result, the body accumulates acetaldehyde (a breakdown product of alcohol), which causes the symptoms of a hangover. With the help of such a mechanism, the human body gives a signal that it is poisoned.

If a person has already formed a dependence on alcohol, then the mechanism for the development of a hangover is slightly different. The acetaldehyde formed as a result of the breakdown of ethanol activates the process of lipid oxidation and stimulates the synthesis of dopamine in the brain. As a result, autonomic reactions occur – trembling, sweating, heart pain, fear of death, and others. Lipid-rich liver cells suffer, as a result of which they are destroyed, gradually being replaced by connective tissue. As a result, the detoxifying function of the liver progressively deteriorates, so a hangover in alcoholics occurs with a small dose of alcohol drunk.

    Symptoms

The following are the key symptoms of hangover:

    • weakness and heaviness in the body
    • headaches and dizziness
    • joint pain
    • intense thirst
    • no appetite
    • increased salivation
    • nausea and vomiting
    • diarrhea
    • shortness of breath
    • limb edema
    • profuse sweating
    • facial redness
    • decreased libido
    • irritability
    • tremor
    • frequent urination

Such signs indicate that the person has drunk too much the day before, and now his body is fighting alcohol poisoning.

The severity of the hangover syndrome depends on the type and amount of alcohol consumed. Red wine in this sense is less dangerous, but it contains a special substance tyramine, which can cause headaches. As for cognac, whiskey, rum and champagne, these drinks lead to a hangover most often.

A typical hangover symptom is nausea or vomiting. With their help, the body tries to get rid of toxins, however, severe vomiting leads to dehydration and leaching of useful substances from the body.In this case, a person often feels general weakness or apathy, experiences an upset stomach and increased blood pressure. Signs such as redness of the eyes and lack of appetite may also occur. With a particularly strong hangover, even a depressed, depressive state sets in.

People with alcoholism who have a hangover can develop severe disorders:

    • severe trembling, sweating, palpitations, agitated emotional state;
    • rapid, literally within an hour, impairment of consciousness, loss of intellectual functions, inability to navigate in time and space;
    • auditory, visual hallucinations, sensations of crawling spiders, ants on the skin;
    • persecution delirium with fits of fear, desire to defend or run away;
    • convulsive seizures against a background of pronounced excitement.

Drugs for getting rid of a hangover

Treatment of a hangover consists in removing the harmful decomposition products of alcohol from the body, eliminating headaches and other unpleasant symptoms, and restoring fluid balance. Vitamin C is responsible for the elimination of alcohol; it also improves overall well-being. Vitamin C can be taken either in pill form or in the form of citrus juice or rosehip decoction. If you have a headache, it is recommended that you take a pain reliever after eating.

    How to prevent a hangover:

In the evening, after drinking alcohol:

    • Drink Filtrum sorbent with plenty of water.

    Morning:

    • take a contrast shower;
    • use hangover pills;
    • in the absence of contraindications, you can take an analgesic or vasodilator drug.

How to quickly relieve a hangover in case of gastrointestinal disorders and vomiting: we recommend using Filtrum, which will help remove harmful substances from the body.Filtrum is a sorbent preparation. Toxic molecules from the stomach and intestines are attached to the surface of the tiny particles compressed into tablets of this hangover remedy. It is necessary to use Filtrum separately from other means. Therefore, it is better to drink a few tablets immediately after waking up with 1 – 2 glasses of pure water, and after an hour to take other medications.

In case of severe alcohol poisoning, the help of a doctor is required. It can be obtained by contacting a medical facility.Treatment consists in the intravenous injection of fluid into the body, maintaining the functions of the heart, lungs, and brain.

Some commercial clinics offer paid home detoxification services. In this case, the doctor comes to the patient and carries out all treatment procedures without hospitalization.

The complex of detoxification procedures includes: thiamine, psychotropic and nootropic drugs, administration of solutions, intake of enterosorbents, vitamin C.

It is worth considering that the need to get drunk is one of the signs of alcoholism; when it appears, you need to seek help from a specialist – a narcologist.

Such a sign must be distinguished from the state after intoxication, that is, the usual poisoning associated with excessive intake of alcohol.

    Avoiding a Hangover:

    1. A day or two before drinking, you can eat some seaweed, seafood or feijoa. These foods contain a lot of iodine, which will increase the oxidation of alcohol you drink. The dosage of iodine in this case should be about 10-12 mcg per day.
    2. In the morning of the day of the feast, drink something choleretic – rosehip syrup (a couple of tablespoons are enough), infusion of corn stigmas or a special choleretic collection. This will help increase the flow of bile so that your liver and pancreas work better and can fight alcohol more effectively.
    3. Drink Filtrum before the meal. The active substance “Lignin” contained in the preparation absorbs most of the toxic decomposition products of alcohol and promotes their removal from the body.
    4. Before drinking alcohol, try to eat a large meal. Dairy or protein products will help you to a greater extent, which protect the mucous surfaces of the stomach and intestines, as a result of which alcohol will be absorbed more slowly.Snack tightly during the meal. Potatoes, meat, and other high-fat foods can help neutralize the effects of alcohol. During breaks, it is recommended to drink plain water, which will relieve you of dehydration.
    5. Do not drink a lot of sparkling alcoholic drinks and do not drink alcohol with carbonated drinks: carbon dioxide will only increase the rate of absorption of alcohol and lead to a severe hangover in the morning.

What is the best hangover relief?

The most important advice – do not abuse alcohol, observe the measure. If you drink too much alcohol, you will not be able to avoid a hangover, even if you follow all the listed precautions.

While drinking alcohol, try to move more – dance, go out into the fresh air. Before going to bed, we advise you to walk a little to reduce the effects of alcohol on the body.

This will reduce the degree of intoxication and help avoid hangover.

Important: before use, read the instructions or consult your doctor. The action of Filtrum may differ and depend on the characteristics of the human body.

Hangovers aren’t fun, even if the events leading up to the hangover were an explosion. Today we take a look at the various preventative measures and therapies that people are taking to get rid of a hangover, highlighting the good, bad, and useless hangover cures.

Disclaimer: Before we dive into myths about hangover cures and effective hangover cures, let’s face one important thing: alcohol is poison to your body.A little from time to time can make you stronger – watch The Princess Bride for practical guidance on how to live better with microdosing of poison – but many at the same time disrupt your metabolic processes and your body becomes complete. trying to cleanse yourself of the Cutty Sark you so thoughtfully shared with him. The only 100% effective hangover prevention is conservative drinking or not drinking at all, and the only 100% effective hangover cure is time and fluids. However, if you’ve never drunk, you wouldn’t be reading this guide, so let’s move on to debunking and testing.

Dog Hair Myths and Other Not-So-Great Ideas

In every culture that has access to alcohol, there are many myths about how to cure a hangover. In Ireland, they said that you need to bury a friend up to his neck in wet sand to help him get through a hangover. Haitian myth says that if you turn the cork of a bottle that causes a hangover into a voodoo doll and stick 13 pins in it, then the hangover will be at risk.Other strange medicines from around the world include inhaling smoke from a coalfire and rubbing the palms of lime. We won’t waste time revealing why rubbing fruit against your body won’t cure your hangover, but we’ll look at some of the most common drug claims. photo Eustachio Santimano .

Drinking Over Alcohol, aka Dog Hair: This is probably the most common hangover cure in the alcohol recovery guide.Unfortunately, this is completely ineffective. Drinking when you’re hungover makes you – temporarily! Feeling better simply because alcohol dulls your senses. You might just as well prescribe a double dose of tequila as a “cure” for a hammer blow to your thumb.

You can get temporary hangover relief — if it works at all — but you’re just prolonging the agony. Your body needs to recycle all the toxins you’ve spent on it all night (tasty or not, alcohol is not a wheatgrass cocktail when it comes to being good for the body), and eating more just makes your schedule longer. photo k-string .

After drinking juice / coffee: The basic premise behind both of these factors is that drinking a lot of juice or coffee speeds up the metabolism and therefore the processing of alcohol. The problem with juice is that it takes gallons of juice to get enough sugar in your system to actually change your metabolic rate – already a suspicious line of reasoning, as researchers in the 1970s established that drinking a lot of juice slowed down alcohol metabolism. Then, even if the dubious trick does work, you have to deal with the ensuing spike in insulin and drop in blood sugar, which can be as annoying as a hangover. Hydration is important, especially after drinking, but juice doesn’t do much to help you.

Coffee fails in kinship. If you drink enough coffee to speed up your metabolism and affect alcohol processing, you will have a heart palpitations and the side effects of a megadose of caffeine will overshadow the side effects of a hangover.Worse, one study suggests hangover coffee is a recipe for poor decision making. photo chaps1 .

If a V8 glass or strong cup of coffee makes you feel better / sober up, then be sure to have a drink. Just don’t expect him to magically swallow all this vodka. Between the two, V8 is the best bet: coffee is a diuretic and low in nutritional value, whereas your V8 is filled with vitamins and salt that you could still consume after a nightly drink.

Pain Relief Application: Do not take over-the-counter pain relievers before bed. Drugs like aspirin and acetaminophen not only have a short duration in the body – you will sleep at their most efficient times – but they are bad for your stomach and liver. This is usually not a problem when you are sober, but now is the time to pay attention to bottle warnings. Acetaminophen is especially bad for the liver – this is a serious warning on the packaging of Tylenol that it should not be taken with alcohol.Save your pain relievers for the next day, and only if you really need them – again, you should allow your body to focus on clearing the alcohol. photo Dragon Rain .

What works – the night before and moving slowly towards sobriety

Just because drinking a gallon of orange juice and sticking pins in a bottle cap won’t stop you from having a hangover doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. As we pointed out above, the only way to get rid of a hangover is to drink little or no alcohol. On occasions where a good time and a good bottle wins you over, you can arm yourself with these tried and tested tips. photo Glennharper .

Drinking water: Water is a magic elixir that makes your body function. You can never go wrong with drinking a lot of this, and this is the best way to keep yourself from hangovers and speed up your hangover recovery. Even better than just drinking a lot of water after The fact is that you drank water the whole night before.

My informal routine, never having a hangover, is to drink a tall glass of water for every unit of alcohol I consume – the unit is one of the equivalent servings taught in health lessons – 1 shot = 1 glass of wine = 1 beer. Drink water often during the night, drink plenty of water before bed, drink more water in the morning. This method helps not only to maintain the body’s water balance, but also to regulate alcohol consumption. Would anyone really get 20 shots a night if they need to drink about 2 gallons of water to go with them? photo Darkpatator .

Eat: Drinking fluids does not close a valve in your stomach or start your metabolic process – one of the reasons drinking cola gains weight so quickly – so make sure you eat well before you start drinking. The mythical side of this advice is that food somehow absorbs alcohol and holds it until your body digests the food. The real reason is that a valve in your stomach closes to start digestion, and alcohol takes longer to be absorbed into your system. The Huge Cheeseburger is a metaphorical whiskey sponge, not a literal one.

Solid food will cause your stomach to focus on slowing down the movement of food and liquid through your body so that digestion can take place. If you skip a meal in front of the bar, the alcohol you drink essentially ends up in your bloodstream on the high-speed train. Focus on foods rich in fat and protein to provide tasty, slow-burning foods that will help regulate alcohol absorption. photo Photo Pink Sherbet .

Don’t neglect a good breakfast either. You may not be hungry in the morning, but the last thing your body needs is to stumble like a zombie on an empty stomach. Cleaning up the mess you made with a bottle of tequila – just because it’s a lighter liqueur doesn’t always mean it’ll protect you from a hangover – that’s hard work and you’d be a jerk if you didn’t feed help. … Get a hearty breakfast with complex carbs and a bit of protein – a suitcase for a farm omelet and thick sliced toast if you ever had one, or perhaps a delicious delectable bacon sandwich – to help your body survive. photo Nathanborror .

How to Evaluate a Hangover Cure

We could write a book on all hangover cures that don’t work and a little information brochure on those that work. It doesn’t take a lot of work to debunk the hangover myth, though, and if you use our simple checklist below, you can debunk the myths as they come up:

    • Would I have done this if I hadn’t been hungover? : Somehow, hangover cures always seem like a kind of puritanical punishment for your alcoholic sins.A good rule of thumb for evaluating hangover cures is to ask if you would do it under normal circumstances and within a reasonable daily routine. Do you drink a lot of water? Always healthy. Some extra B vitamins? You can’t go wrong here. Putting out the smoke from a coal fire? Not like your normal post-workout routine.
    • Is the mechanism of this treatment clear and scientifically sound? : You don’t need to have a degree in molecular biology or understand how potassium pumps work in your cells to use it.Question any medicine that has “and then … magic!” as a component. Nutritionists around the world will advise you to eat protein for long-term energy conservation – a bowl of eggs gives you much more energy throughout the morning than a bowl of cereal, for example – so it doesn’t take long to see eating high-protein foods. eating before spending the night in the city will help maintain a stable metabolism. When in doubt, go to Google to find out about the scientific evidence behind the alleged drug.
    • Could this potentially make me sicker? : You might think this is obvious, but given the common hangover cures, it isn’t. Drinking raw eggs, drinking rocky eggs, sweating in the sauna, running in circles and taking huge doses of vitamins are all examples of what people do to get rid of a hangover, which are actually not all that good. You don’t want to be poisoned with salmonella, or dehydrate yourself further with hard exercise, or burden your liver even more with extra crap to process. You won’t be jogging to “cure” the flu; treat your hangover accordingly.

By using these ground rules as a guide, you can avoid hangover medications that are completely ineffective, cause food poisoning, or worse. Being hungover isn’t fun, but it’s not so fun being in the hospital either, because your friend convinced you that the ideal cure for too much tequila might be raw eggs, followed by a run into a smoky sauna.

    How to prevent a hangover

Often there is a headache in the morning, if a person does not know when to stop drinking alcohol. One of the best ways to prevent a hangover is to stop drinking.
. However, if this is not possible, some rules should be followed to help avoid painful symptoms:

    • Do not drink alcohol on an empty stomach: this can lead to rapid intoxication, stomach and digestive problems.
    • Snack on strong drinks with fatty foods or sweets. This can slow down the dissolution of alcohol in the stomach.
    • To maintain the balance of electrolytes, alcohol should be washed down with mineral water.
    • To prevent a severe and painful hangover, it is necessary to avoid the use of low-quality alcoholic beverages containing fusel oils.
    • For better processing and quick breakdown of alcohol, drink drinks should be combined with active movements, such as dancing.
    • After the party is over, you should get a good night’s sleep.
    • Do not combine alcohol and smoking.
    • Do not combine different alcoholic beverages.
    • 2-3 hours before the meal, take vitamin C, as well as hepatoprotectors – Essentiale or Carsil. They will help the liver handle alcohol more easily.

Red wine contains an additive – tyramine, which provokes pain in the head. Therefore, if you have a tendency to migraine, you should stop using it.

    Alcohol affects each person differently
. Someone suffers from a headache with excessive alcohol consumption, someone will have enough of one glass. Therefore, you need to prepare for the upcoming holiday in advance and not exceed your limit.

A hangover is a complex symptom complex that occurs the day after heavy drinking and is characterized by headache, nausea, and weakness.
Its appearance is due to the influence of alcohol breakdown products on vital organ systems.

Of course, it is better to prevent a hangover: drink plenty of fluids, limit alcohol consumption, provide yourself with a quality snack, do not mix different types of alcohol.

    Specialized medicines

Hangover pills can be divided into two groups: branded products and ordinary drugs that can be used for this purpose. At the moment, there are many official medicines on the market that promise to save a person from a hangover syndrome in the blink of an eye. Hangover pills contain various combinations of substances that have a detoxifying, analgesic and tonic effect. Some of them can be drunk with alcohol, while others should be drunk in the morning after heavy drinking.

    Zorex

This is a complex drug that reduces intoxication and has a hepatoprotective effect. It contains unitiol and pantothenic acid. Unithiol binds to acetaldehyde and forms non-toxic complexes. Pantothenic acid is involved in carbon and fat metabolism, and by stimulating the formation of corticosterone, it accelerates the regeneration processes.

Packages of 2 or 5 capsules (250 mg of unitiol and 10 mg of pantothenic acid) are sold in pharmacies, and there are also soluble tablets of 10 in a box (150 mg and 7 mg). You should take one tablet in the morning and the second during the day. If the state of health is too bad, then the dosage can be increased (up to 1 g of unitiol per day). In effervescent tablets “Zorex. Morning ”additionally contains succinic acid, which is an antioxidant and adaptogen. It protects liver cells and promotes the early elimination of toxins.

With individual characteristics of the body, an allergic reaction may occur when taking the drug: itching, rash over the entire surface of the body, excessive dryness of the mucous membranes. It should not be used for liver diseases, kidney failure and intolerance to certain components. It is better to consult a doctor before use.

This is the most famous anti-hangover drug, which contains acetylsalicylic acid, sodium bicarbonate and citric acid.Unlike the previous drug, Alka-Seltzer is used not only to relieve hangover symptoms, but also for pain syndromes of various origins (myalgia, menstrual pain, migraine, toothache, cranialgia), rheumatoid arthritis, fever, as a prevention of thrombosis and thromboembolism. Aspirin
has analgesic, antipyretic and antiaggregate effects due to inactivation of the cyclooxygenase enzyme. Baking soda reduces its harmful effects on the gastric mucosa and neutralizes hydrochloric acid. This helps to cope with the emerging dyspeptic disorders (heartburn, bad taste in the mouth).

It is better to take this drug as a hangover prevention, rather than to eliminate the effects of alcohol. Because it is more of a symptomatic treatment than an impact on the underlying causes of hangover.

Alka-Seltzer has more contraindications than the previous drug: diseases of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa, portal hypertension, venous congestion, and with increased sensitivity to aspirin, an attack of “aspirin asthma” may occur.

The tablet must be dissolved in 200 ml of water and drunk in the morning. During the day, you can repeat the reception, depending on how you feel. For an adult, the maximum daily dose is 8 tablets.

    Medichronal

This is a specialized hangover cure. It consists of two packages, the contents of which must be dissolved in a glass of water in the morning and drunk. It is taken once a day after meals.

It contains glucose, glycine, sodium formate and low molecular weight medical polyvidone.

Sodium formate inactivates acetaldehyde. It reacts with it and forms conjugates, which are incorporated into the Krebs cycle and participate in the body’s natural metabolic processes. Glucose contributes to the active work of the central nervous system. Glycine is a sedative and mild antidepressant. It normalizes sleep, eliminates excessive excitement of the central nervous system and the feeling of anxiety that can occur with a hangover. Medical polyvidone binds free toxins in the lumen of the small intestine and removes them from the body without being absorbed into the blood.

Adverse reactions include the possible occurrence of an allergic reaction in the form of itching.

    Antipochmelin

These hangover pills contain succinic and fumaranic acids, monosodium glutamate, ascorbic acid and glucose. The mechanism of its action is as follows: it slows down the work of alcohol dehydronenase and the body copes with intoxication faster and more efficiently. Antipochmelin also accelerates the processing of acetaldehyde to acetic acid, and reduces its harmful effects on hepatocytes. It should be remembered that alcohol is absorbed more slowly and the state of intoxication lasts longer.

It is better to take this medicine together with alcohol at the rate of 1 tablet per 100 grams of strong drink. And in the morning, to reduce the manifestation of a hangover, it is worth drinking 4-6 tablets and drinking plenty of water.

    Plant-based preparations

This group includes Zenalk, Korrda, Arise, Security Feel Better. They have gastro- and hepatoprotective effects, normalize the gastrointestinal tract, reduce the toxic effect of alcohol breakdown products. These drugs help restore the process of obtaining nutrients from food. They are better suited for supportive care and should not be taken as a primary drug.

    Non-specialized medicines

There are many drugs that are excellent at relieving hangover symptoms, but do not belong to this group of drugs:

    • Paracetamol and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They all have a pronounced analgesic effect and are used for pain of various localization.But it must be remembered that in the process of metabolizing paracetamol, the liver is significantly loaded due to the formation of formaldehyde. Citramone is a good remedy for headache relief. It contains aspirin, caffeine, citric acid, phenacetin. These components help to relieve pain, help unload the meninges (aspirin breaks down red blood cells) and help to invigorate. But for the treatment of a hangover, this is not the best choice, since it only relieves some of the symptoms;
    • Preparations that remove the negative effects on the nervous system.This group includes Mexidol, Picamilon, Afobazol, Glycine, Phenazepam. These drugs improve the metabolism in the brain, improve performance, reduce anxiety and lift mood by stimulating the production of dopamine. They also contribute to the rapid elimination of under-oxidized metabolic products;
    • Medicines used for detoxification. To improve the excretion of metabolic products, sorbents are widely used: enterrasgel, polysorb, activated carbon. These drugs prevent “harmful” substances that have not been absorbed from the digestive tube into the bloodstream. They absorb them and remove them unchanged. The dosage depends on the agent chosen: for example, to achieve the effect of activated carbon, you need to drink at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 kg of weight.

Drug therapy for a hangover is best combined with physical methods. First of all, you need to limit your activity. It will be useful to take a contrast shower to invigorate.A bath is well suited for the redistribution of fluid in a dehydrated body. Drinking plenty of alkaline drinks helps to get rid of acidosis and restore the acid-base balance of the blood. For this purpose, it is better to drink mineral water with a high content of microelements: Polyana Kvasova, Borzhomi, Essentuki.

Read also a detailed article on how to get rid of a hangover at home. You can also take a free test for an individual selection of drugs that will help you as effectively as possible and right now.

Activated carbon, Smecta, Enterosgel or any other sorbent

Activated carbon and other enterosorbents are able to absorb toxic substances from our intestines – and then remove them from the body in a natural way.

Activated charcoal for a hangover should be taken in a dosage: 1 tablet per 10 kilograms of your body weight.Enterosgel: take at least three tablespoons of the product by mouth and drink it with water. Smecta: Dissolve 1-2 sachets in warm water and drink. Read about the rules for taking other sorbents in the instructions for use, which is attached to a particular drug.

Activated carbon is a cheap and time-tested sorbent. However, now there are more modern drugs (Smecta, Enterosgel and others) that remove harmful substances from your intestines even more efficiently, while acting more gently.

Remember that there is no point in taking sorbents at the same time as any other drugs: the sorbent will absorb them along with the rest of the alcohol, and there will be no benefit from the drugs. Take a break between taking sorbent and other drugs.

Two hours after taking any sorbent, do not forget to go to the toilet so that harmful substances along with the sorbent leave the body, and do not continue to accumulate and poison the body.

    Mineral water “Essentuki” or “Borjomi”

Drinking plenty of fluids helps with a hangover: fresh water fills the bloodstream, relieving you of dry wood and flushing out harmful substances, simultaneously relieves swelling and relieves headaches – that is, it solves the main hangover problems.

Special alkaline mineral water, which is usually sold in pharmacies, works three times more efficiently and faster than ordinary water – and in addition, restores the acid-base balance in the body, which is shifted to the acidic side during a hangover. As a result, you will not only feel much better, but the body will actually be cleansed.

    Succinic acid

Succinic acid is inexpensive and provides significant hangover relief. Succinic acid speeds up the metabolism in the body, helping to quickly decompose toxic substances into simpler and more harmless ones – and then completely remove them from the body.In principle, to relieve a hangover at home, it is enough to cleanse the intestines (using an enema or sorbents) and take succinic acid.

DrinkOFF, Antipohmelin, Alka-Seltzer or other branded anti-hangover agent

Branded anti-hangover products are more expensive than the tablets mentioned above. But some of them really work: for example, the correct composition of the preparations DrinkOFF, Alka-Seltzer, Guten Morgen, Alka-prime, Alkoklin, Limontar, Alekol (the same as “Limontar”, only in powder form).Piel-Alko and Alko-Buffer also help from a hangover, but only after cleansing the intestines.

Antipohmelin (aka RU-21) and Korda work outside the box: they do not accelerate the processing of alcohol, but, on the contrary, slow it down so that the body has time to adequately cope with alcohol – these drugs are effective, but they increase the duration of intoxication.

Combined anti-hangover agents may contain in their composition analgesics and tonic substances, vitamins, as well as components that help to quickly neutralize and remove poisonous decomposition products of alcohol from the body.Read the special section, which contains detailed descriptions of each anti-hangover remedy with comments by the expert of the Pohmelye.rf website, toxicologist Stanislav Radchenko.

Magnesium sulfate, Magnesol or Panangin (Asparkam)

Alcohol has a diuretic effect by flushing out too much magnesium from the body. Lack of magnesium during a hangover leads to anxiety, muscle weakness, chills and heart problems. Magnesium preparations accelerate metabolism, reduce headaches, support the heart and nervous system, relieve swelling and depression.Magnesium sulfate (another name – magnesia) or Magnesol in combination with bowel cleansing (using an enema or sorebnt) can bring the hangover body back to normal without additional efforts.

Panangin (Asparkam) contains magnesium in a slightly different form, so it acts weaker than Magnesol and magnesium sulfate. Panangin is recommended not to be taken as an independent anti-hangover agent, but only as part of a comprehensive treatment for alcohol poisoning.

If you need to heal your nerves (optional):

In the same place, in the pharmacy, you can buy St. John’s wort and prepare a useful infusion: 4 tablespoons of chopped herbs, pour 0.5 liters of boiling water and hold in a boiling water bath for 20-30 minutes.Take half a glass every hour and a half. The anti-hangover properties of such an infusion are not only known to people for a long time, but also proven by modern medicine. Hangover depression is usually relieved by St. John’s wort in 2-3 hours. In addition, the infusion of St. John’s wort improves blood circulation and the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, has an anti-inflammatory and general tonic effect.

If you insist on the herb of St. John’s wort on your own laziness, then you can buy Negrustin: this is the same St. John’s wort, only more expensive, but also more convenient to take.Novo-passite contains not only St. John’s wort, but also other useful plant components. Any of these remedies will help to cope with depression and tidy up the nervous system with a hangover, but first it is advisable to cleanse the intestines: because a crowded intestine interferes with the absorption of drugs and continues to poison the body.

Glycine, Picamilon, Mexidol and Pantogam also soothe, restore nerves, reduce headaches and improve sleep with a hangover. Glycine additionally also neutralizes toxic decomposition products of alcohol.Nerve problems are common with a hangover. Get one of these remedies from the pharmacy, but do not forget about general detoxification measures: to recover from a hangover, it is not enough just to calm your nerves.

Glutargin, if the hangover has just begun

In the early stages of a hangover, glutargin (arginine glutamate) is very helpful, especially if you didn’t overdo it yesterday. Glutargin with a hangover relieves swelling and intoxication, reduces the negative effect of alcohol on the nervous system, promotes the rapid elimination of harmful substances from the body.

For the treatment of a hangover, you should take 1 gram of glutargin (usually 4 tablets of 0.25 g) with an interval of at least one hour. In this case, it is better to limit yourself to 4 grams per day.

      Rowan berries

From herbal preparations, except for the herb St. John’s wort, in the pharmacy you can buy rowan fruits – and prepare a therapeutic infusion from them for a hangover. To do this, crushed or ground rowan berries must be poured with boiling water at the rate of: 1 tablespoon of berries, 1 glass of boiling water. Drink one glass of infusion every 8 hours.

Rowan infusion is a natural and safe remedy to cure a hangover. Rowan fruits contain many vitamins, trace elements and organic acids that improve metabolism. Mountain ash infusion stabilizes cell membranes, through which alcohol penetrates into the intercellular spaces (forming edema), into the bloodstream and into the brain. Thus, an infusion of mountain ash for a hangover will relieve swelling and headache, and also improve digestion, has an antitoxic, antimicrobial and stimulating effect.

      Aspirin for headache

Under the influence of alcohol, erythrocytes in the small vessels of our brain stick together into microclots. This increases the swelling and is one of the causes of hangover headaches. Aspirin makes a difference by preventing red blood cells from sticking together.

You can take aspirin only when at least 6 hours have passed since the last glass was taken: you cannot take aspirin along with alcohol because of the risk of gastric bleeding.

For a hangover, it is better to take instant aspirin: it acts faster and is less irritating to the stomach lining.Aspirin for a hangover should be taken in the following dosage: 500 mg of aspirin for every 35 kg of body weight.

It is even better to take aspirin in advance: a day before drinking alcohol. Aspirin is able to enhance the work of microsomal enzymes and thereby weaken the negative effects of alcohol. For more tips on how to reduce the effects of drinking on the body in advance and significantly alleviate future hangovers, you will learn from a dedicated article by an experienced toxicologist.
