Psoriasis at Home Treatments and Self-Care

A diagnosis of psoriasis can be a lot to absorb. New symptoms can take a toll on both your physical and mental health.

Though your doctor will help you come up with a specific plan that fits your form of psoriasis, there are some things most everyone can do to help keep symptoms at bay and maintain your mental health.

Tip 1: Keep Your Skin Moist

After putting on thick lotions or creams, seal in the moisture with ointments like petroleum jelly, shortening, or olive oil. Dry skin makes the irritation and itchiness worse. But don’t use too much during hot, sticky summer months. Sweat mixed with thick creams can make your psoriasis worse.

Right after your bath or shower, pat yourself dry — don’t rub — with a towel. Then put the creams on to seal in water.

Before you go to bed, wrap your skin with a bandage or plastic wrap. In the morning, wash the area gently. Over time, this can help with scaling.

Tip 2: Bathe With Care

Baths and showers can dry your skin. To keep that from happening:

  • Make sure the water’s not too hot. Lukewarm is best.
  • Add non-fragrance salts or oil or finely ground oatmeal to bathwater after you’ve soaked for a minute. Plain water can suck moisture out.
  • Take fewer showers and baths. They can strip your skin of natural oils. Bathe every other day or every third day, especially in the winter.

Tip 3: Stay With the Plan

It may not be a lot of fun to slather thick goo on psoriasis patches day after day. But stick with it. If your doctor prescribes creams or ointments, make them part of your daily routine. If you find that some things work better than others or that certain others worsen your symptoms, talk to your doctor about changing your plan.

Tip 4: Get Some Sun

Sunlight can treat your skin condition, but sunburns make it worse. Use a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide and has an SPF of 30 or higher on areas that don’t have psoriasis. Limit how much sun you get. Twenty minutes a day 3 days a week is a good start. Talk to your doctor first, though. Some medicines aren’t safe when you get lots of sun.

Tip 5: Quit Smoking

You can add psoriasis to the long list of health problems this habit makes worse. In one study, people who smoked more than a pack a day were twice as likely to have a serious case as those who smoked half a pack or less. The effects were even stronger in women who already had psoriasis.

Kicking the habit is one of the best things you can do to care for your condition.

Tip 6: Drink Moderately or Not at All

Psoriasis is more common in people who drink heavily. Alcohol may affect men’s psoriasis more than women’s. Women should have no more than one drink a day, and men should stop at two.

Tip 7: Think About Diet Changes

There’s no solid evidence that any one food makes psoriasis better or worse. At the same time, many say their sores got better after they cut back on foods like sugar, white flour, or caffeine. It won’t hurt to try, especially if you cut out not so healthy foods.

Tip 8: Tend to Your Mental Health

Don’t let your condition affect your self-esteem. Ask for help if you find it’s taking a toll on you. Talk to a therapist such as a psychologist or social worker or join a support group. Time with other people who understand what you’re going through can help.

Is Petroleum Jelly Good For Psoriasis?

Topical emollients are one of a number of possible treatments for psoriasis symptoms. But which product should you choose? In this blog, we take a closer look at petroleum jelly.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common skin disease that affects around 2% of people in the UK. It can start at any age and is thought to be caused by genetics and triggered by external factors. Psoriasis manifests as dry, itchy, scaly patches on the skin, commonly appearing on the trunk, scalp, elbows and knees. These patches are often inflamed or flushed.

A chronic and long term condition, there is no cure (as yet) for psoriasis. It tends to come and go in cycles or ‘flare ups’ then can disappear for many months. There are, however, lifestyle changes and management strategies that you can adopt for the treatment of symptoms.

Using emollients to manage psoriasis

Topical creams and ointments that improve the appearance of skin patches are often the first port of call. In fact, if you have a mild case of psoriasis, then your GP will probably recommend that you apply an emollient directly to the affected area.

Emollients are ointments that nourish and hydrate skin to trap in moisture with a water protective barrier. They help to reduce the itching and scaling caused by psoriasis. For some people, treatment by emollient is all they need to clear up their skin, although it may take applications over several weeks. There are a wide variety of emollients available over the counter or on prescription from your GP.

Petroleum is an emollient and some people may find that it is helpful in treating their psoriasis symptoms. However, it is made from a by-product of the petrochemical industry, which some can be sensitive to. Petroleum jelly can also cause allergies and may exacerbate existing skin problems.

This year, the Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis Alliance warned about the dangers of using emollients such as Vaseline that may contain ingredients that make them flammable. You can watch a video about it here.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that most commonly causes red, scaly patches in areas along the body like the knees, scalp, and elbows. The long-term chronic condition has no cure, with people typically experiencing flare ups for a few weeks to a few months before it dies down.

Although there is no cure to the condition, products on the market help to relieve dryness, itchiness, irritation, and discomfort. Not all lotions are created equal, with some using fragrances, dyes, and chemicals that can further irritate your psoriasis instead of relieving symptoms.

Mark Lebwohl, M.D., a New York board-certified dermatologist and member of American Academy of Dermatology, told Verywell Health that people should seek an expert opinion if over-the-counter topicals don’t relieve their psoriasis symptoms, as a prescription topical could provide better results.

If you’re looking for some OTC products to help soothe a last minute flare up, here are some of the best on the market.

What to Look for in a Lotion for Psoriasis

Ingredients

Not all ingredients are created equal in psoriasis topicals, as some can provide more benefits than others depending on your skin type. Universally, Dr. Lebwohl recommends avoiding any allergens, as they could further irritate the patches. If you like thicker lotions, then ones with ingredients like petroleum jelly are great choices. Salicylic acid is another beneficial ingredient to incorporate in your lotion.

Location of Psoriasis

“Scalps are going to be treated differently than the body; the body is going to be treated differently than the groin; body folds are actually treated differently,” Dr. Lebwohl says. Paying attention to the location of your psoriasis and using products accordingly will better address the skin condition. If you’re not sure which product is best for your specific situation, consult your dermatologist.

Type

Psoriasis is a very personal skin condition, meaning what works for some people won’t work for others. That also is true with the type of lotion you can use. If you like a greasier product and have found it better relieves your patches, then look for something with petroleum jelly. For people who find greasier lotions irritating, it is best to avoid ingredients like petroleum jelly.

Psoriasis Uncovered: Myths vs Truths

Myth: Psoriasis is just “dry” skin.
Truth: Psoriasis is an immune disorder leading to skin inflammation (redness, irritation and swelling) with itching and thick, dry, scales on the skin. It cause embarrassment and distress for patients.

Myth: Psoriasis is contagious.
Truth: You cannot “catch” psoriasis from someone else, even if you come into contact with their skin. It is not an infectious disease.

Myth: Psoriasis can be cured.
Truth: Psoriasis is a chronic condition that has no cure; however, there are many effective treatments, and ongoing research for this condition is active.

What is Psoriasis? It’s More Than Skin Deep

Psoriasis is a chronic (long-term) autoimmune disease in which the cells of your skin are replaced at an unusually fast rate.

  • Skin cells are quickly replaced every few days, instead of every 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Due to this rapid turnover, extra skins cells cause raised silvery plaques that can be flaky, red, and itchy.
  • Psoriasis tends to occur in adults most frequently, and the symptoms may come and go.

There is no cure for psoriasis, but advanced medications allow roughly 80% to 90% of patients to have successful treatment to lessen symptoms and improve the appearance of the plaques.

What Does Psoriasis Look Like?

Psoriasis can occur on any area of the body, including hands, feet, elbows, scalp or genitals.

  • In plaque psoriasis, the most common form of psoriasis, the skin tends to be dry, flaky, itchy, red and covered with white scales.
  • Psoriasis can affect small areas of the body or be very widespread.
  • For many people, psoriasis can lead to embarrassment, self-consciousness, or stress; some people may require treatment for depression or anxiety.
  • Family doctors, dermatologists, or rheumatologists may treat your psoriasis depending upon site and severity.
  • See more pictures of psoriasis.

The Heartbreak: What Are the Causes of Psoriasis?

The exact causes of psoriasis are not fully known. Many researchers believe it is a combination of factors — including family history, a faulty immune system, and effects from the environment.

  • In people with psoriasis, certain white blood cells that normally fight off infection instead attack healthy cells (this is known as an autoimmune disease). It is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in the U.S.
  • New skins cells are formed too quickly and result in a layer of dead, scaly skin and white blood cells that remain on the top layer of skin instead of sloughing off.
  • These patches of skin and lesions are known as psoriatic lesions or plaque psoriasis.
  • Psoriasis can lead to feelings of embarrasment, self-consciousness, and worry.

Who Gets Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the U.S. About 2 to 3 percent of the population, or roughly 8 million people, have psoriasis, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation.

  • Men and women both get psoriasis equally, and it most commonly appears in adults in two age ranges — between 20 to 30 years of age or from 50 to 60 years of age. Children can also get it, although it is primarily a disease of adults.
  • About 30 percent of people that develop psoriasis may also develop psoriatic arthritis, a type of rheumatoid arthritis that tends to affect the joints of the hands and feet.
  • Some, but not all, patients will have a family history of psoriasis.
  • Remember, psoriasis is not contagious; you cannot catch it from someone else.

Is There More Than One Type of Psoriasis? Yes.

There are many different types of psoriasis, and some may occur at the same time. Examples of different types of psoriasis include:

  • Plaque Psoriasis: Most common form that causes raised, red skins areas that may be itchy or flaky.
  • Guttate Psoriasis: May be a past history of streptococcal infection; may occur in children or younger adults. Small plaques form on the midsection of the body.
  • Pustular Psoriasis: Painful and severe form of psoriasis, with pus-filled sacs in the psoriasis plaques that can break. Fever may occur.

Types of Psoriasis, Continued

Examples of other types of psoriasis include:

  • Inverse Psoriasis:: This psoriasis may affect skin fold areas such as the genital area, under the breast or arms, or around the groin area. The lesions are flat, red, and often without scales.
  • Nail Psoriasis: Nails may become yellow-brown, pitted, flake away or detach from the nail bed.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis: May occur in up to 30 percent of patients with psoriasis; symptoms include swelling of the knees, ankles, hands and toe joints; pain; and may be accompanied by nail psoriasis.

Flare Ups: Common Psoriasis Triggers

Certain events or substances may worsen your psoriasis or cause it to come out of remission. It is best to avoid any trigger you identify that may cause a flare-up of your psoriasis.

Common triggers include:

  • Illnesses or infections
  • Skin injuries or burns
  • Stressful situations or anxiety
  • Cold weather, smoke or smoking
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Certain medications such as lithium, high blood pressure medications (beta blockers), drugs to prevent malaria, and iodide products, such as potassium iodide and sodium iodide.

Treatments for Psoriasis: Where Do I Begin?

There are many different treatments for psoriasis, and what you use may differ depending upon severity, previous treatments, psoriasis type and what your preferences are, including costs.

Treatment can lessen the formation of the excessive skin cells and help to return your skin to a smoother appearance.

Treatments may include:

  • topical creams or lotions
  • phototherapy (light therapy) with or without certain medications
  • prescription drugs that may be taken by mouth
  • injectable medications can be used by the patient at home or given in the doctor’s office.

The First Line of Therapy – Topical Corticosteroids

Mild to moderate psoriasis is initially treated with a low to mid-potency corticosteroid cream, lotion, spray or ointment – such as:

Lower potency products, such as fluocinolone (Synalar, Derma-Smooth F/S) can be use on the face or other sensitive areas.

Lotions or foams are best for the scalp, creams are best for oozing lesions, and ointments can treat dry, raised, or scaly lesions.

Higher potency topicals are reserved for thicker, tough-to-treat areas like elbows or knees. Topical treatments work best on mild and smaller areas of psoriasis.

Topical Corticosteriods – Safety and Side Effects

Even though topical corticosteroids such as creams or ointments are applied to the surface of the skin, they can still cause side effects.

Long-term or excessive use can lead to thinning of the skin, irritation, dryness, or changes in skin color. If your doctor recommends that you occlude your psoriasis areas — wrapping them in plastic after applying a topical corticosteroid to boost the effect — side effects may be more common. Do NOT do this unless directed by your doctor.

More serious side effects may occur with topical corticosteroids if used in high doses for prolonged periods. You may become resistant to the helpful effects of topical corticosteroids over time, too.

For a complete list of side effects, please refer to the individual drug monographs.

Use of OTC Emollients and Creams

Topical emollients and creams are agents that sooth and soften the skin. Emollients, such as lanolin, are rich in fats and oils. They work by moisturizing the skin and protecting it from drying.

Regular use of emollients may lessen the need for anti-inflammatories like corticosteroids in psoriasis.

These preparations are available over-the-counter (OTC) without a prescription – common examples include:

Ask your dermatologist, family doctor, or pharmacist for their top recommendations.

Vitamin D Analogues: How They Help

Vitamin D analogues are used to help control overactive skin cell production by binding to the vitamin D receptors on the skin cells.

Topical vitamin D analogues such as:

are effective at slowing the growth of the skin cells and can be used with emollients and topical corticosteroids applied to the skin.

Calcipotriene with betamethasone is a vitamin D analogue that is already combined with an antiinflammatory corticosteroid. Brands include: Taclonex, Taclonex Scalp, Wynzora and Enstilar.

The most common side effect with these agents is mild skin irritation. Some topical vitamin D analogues may take up to 6 to 8 weeks for their full effect.

Oral calcitriol (Rocaltrol capsules) can also be used for psoriasis.

Topical Retinoids: Vitamin A Derivatives

Tazarotene (Tazorac) is a vitamin A derivative that affects epidermal cell growth (in the top layer of skin) in psoriasis and exhibits some anti-inflammatory action. It is also available as a generic option.

  • Tazarotene comes in a cream or gel (0.05% or 0.1% strengths) and is used primarily for mild to moderate psoriasis. Tazorac is also approved for acne treatment.
  • Other brands of tazarotene, approved for other uses, include Arazlo (acne), Fabior (acne) and Avage (used for to reduce fine wrinkles, dark spots or freckles on the face. )
  • In 2019, a combination of halobetasol, a topical corticosteroid, and tazarotene (brand: Duobrii Lotion) from Bausch Health was FDA-approved for plaque psoriasis.

Acitretin (Soriatane) is an oral retinoid, also a form of vitamin A, that comes as a capsule (10 mg, 25 mg strengths).

  • It is used for severe forms of psoriasis that do not respond to other treatments. Acitretin is not a cure for psoriasis, and your psoriasis may come back after you stop taking this medication.
  • It is also available as a generic option.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warnings

Important: View the patient counseling information for Tazorac or Soriatane to learn more about the Contraindications and Warnings for Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding and discuss this information with your doctor.

The vitamin A derivatives tazarotene (Tazorac) and acitretin (Soriatane) are NOT to be used when you’re pregnant or planning a pregnancy due to the risk for possible severe birth defects. You should not be pregnant when you start treatment or become pregnant during treatment. In addition, these products should not be used during breastfeeding. Before you start treatment with either medicine, talk to your doctor about the risks of pregnancy and breastfeeding with these medicines.

In addition, you must NOT become pregnant while taking acitretin (Soriatane) and for at least 3 YEARS after stopping acitretin, so that the drug can be eliminated to below a blood concentration that would be associated with an increased incidence of birth defects.

Phototherapy: Lighten Your Symptoms

Light therapy (phototherapy) may be used if topical treatments are not effective. Natural sunlight or ultraviolet light (UVA or UVB) can be used to help clear the skin of psoriasis lesions. Light therapy may be used alone or in combination with medications.

  • Ultraviolet light lessens the growth of plaques, redness, swelling and itching.
  • Methoxsalen (Oxsoralen-Ultra) can be used with UV light also (called PUVA) and is effective in treating larger areas of widespread psoriasis.
  • Laser light (UVB) is also used and can directly target psoriasis and avoid the surrounding skin.
  • Light therapy can increase the risk of skin burns and cancer and should not be used in people with a history of skin cancer.

Topical Coal Tar: An Old Stand-By

Coal tar is one of the oldest known treatments for psoriasis. These products are effective in treating mild to moderate psoriasis with few side effects, but can be messy with a pungent odor, and leave stains on clothes and other fabrics.

The exact way that coal tar treats psoriasis is not known. However, it does increase the skin’s absorption of UVB light for an added effect.

Coal tar can be found over-the-counter in shampoos, creams and lotions and can be used in combination with corticosteroids and emollients to soften the skin.

It is also used with ultraviolet-B (UVB) light in a treatment known as Goeckerman treatment.

  • Goeckerman treatment is a course of UV light therapy combined with coal tar for more moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.
  • It is messy and smelly, but can be effective; however, not many doctors offer this treatment The regimen is usually given daily over several weeks at a time.

Heads Up: Anthralin for Scalp Psoriasis

Anthralin (Drithocreme, Zithranol Shampoo) is a prescription topical cream or shampoo for the scalp that slows down the growth of skin cells.

  • Anthralin, like coal tar, can be messy, stain fabrics, and has a strong odor.
  • Anthralin can also stain the skin or hair with a temporary reddish brown color.
  • Treatment may be applied for short periods to help lessen staining and irritation. Follow your healthcare providers instructions for use.

Like coal tar, anthralin may be used in combination with UV light to help with skin symptoms of psoriasis, including dryness, redness, flaking, scaling, and itching.

Salicylic Acid: A Keratolytic

Salicylic acid (Salitop, Keralyt) is available in both over-the-counter and prescription strengths. It’s known as a “keratolytic”, which means it loosens dead skin from the psoriasis plaque to reduce scaling.

Salicylic acid is available in many different OTC formulations, such as lotions, gels, creams, foams, shampoos and others, to treat both skin and scalp psoriasis.

Salicylic acid can be used in combination with other treatments, like corticosteroid creams, anthralin, or coal tar to increase effectiveness.

  • It may take up to several days before your symptoms improve.
  • Common side effects of salicylic acid may include skin irritation, peeling, rash, or blanching of the skin area.

Methotrexate (MTX): A Longer-Term Option

Methotrexate (brand names: RediTrex, Trexall, Otrexup, Rasuvo), is a folic acid antagonist, meaning it blocks the action of folic acid. Methotrexate is often abbreviated “MTX”.

  • Methotrexate comes as a once-weekly oral tablet or injection that suppresses the immune system and DNA synthesis to slow down skin cell turnover.
  • MTX can be used long-term for moderate to severe psoriasis and for psoriatic arthritis, but results with MTX may not be seen for several months. Review MTX dosing here.
  • Your doctor may also prescribe folic acid in addition to MTX to help lessen stomach and other side effects.
  • MTX can be toxic to the liver and other organs; lab monitoring will be needed.

MTX should NOT be used in women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy; men should also stop its use 3 months before conception. Use effective contraception during and after treatment with methotrexate.

  • Effective birth control is recommended for females of reproductive potential during therapy and for at least 6 months after the final dose.
  • Effective contraception is recommended for males with female partners of reproductive potential during therapy and for at least 3 months after the final dose of methotrexate.

Cyclosporine: A Short-Term Option

Cyclosporine, like methotrexate, acts to suppress the immune system to decrease skin cell turnover and growth.

Cyclosporine can increase the risk for infections, and use for greater than one year is not recommended.

  • Some healthcare professionals will suggest that patients take a “holiday” from cyclosporine, use other treatments in the interim, and then return to cyclosporine therapy again later.
  • This may help to lessen severe side effects like kidney damage or high blood pressure.
  • Cyclosporine can be used in combination with emollients; improvement is usually seen in 2 weeks; but stabilization with cyclosporine may take 12 to 16 weeks.

Biologics and Biosimilars

Biologics or biosimilars are types of personalized and targeted medicine that are increasingly being used to treat psoriasis.

  • Biologics are usually reserved for use after other trials of medication have failed or are not tolerated.
  • These are complex protein-based drugs derived from living cells (microorganisms, plants, or animal cells) and synthesized in a laboratory.

There are many biologics and biosimilars approved for the treatment of psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, or both. Classes of biologics used include: tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) inhibitors, interleukin (IL) blockers (IL-17, IL-23, IL-12/23), and T-cell blockers.

Prior to starting a biologic, patients must be screened for tuberculosis (TB). Some biologics can be given at home via a pen for subcutaneous injection, while some treatments require an office visit for IV injection. Treatments may lead to serious side effects, so be sure to discuss this with your doctor. They may increase the risk for certain types of infections, including tuberculosis (TB).

These agents can costs several thousand dollars per month if you are paying cash. However, the manufacturer may be able to help with costs through their Copay Cards or Patient Assistance Program. Check with your insurance company for their preferred products and to determine your copay if you have insurance.

The next slide outlines the biologics with access to their product information.

FDA-Approved Biologics for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis

Approved to treat both plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis:

Approved to treat plaque psoriasis:

Approved to treat psoriatic arthritis:

Otezla (apremilast)

Otezla (apremilast) is a phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor approved by the FDA in 2014 for plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Studies show that Otezla blocks the enzyme PDE4 to lower inflammation in the body, and improvement in psoriasis may begin within the first few weeks of treatment, but its exact mechanism is not known. Otezla is not classified as a biologic agent.

Otezla dose (in more detail)

  • Otezla is taken as a tablet by mouth, and you will gradually increase your dose of Otezla over the first 5 days to help lower the possibility of stomach upset.
  • After the initial gradual dose increase, Otezla is taken twice a day, morning and night.
  • Otezla can be taken with or without food. Do not crush, split, or chew the tablets.
  • Those with severe kidney disease will take Otezla only once a day. Your dose will also be lowered during the graudual dose increase.

The most common side effects with Otezla in plaque psoriasis studies were diarrhea, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection, tension headache, and headache.

The IL-17 Blockers: Siliq, Taltz, and Cosentyx

In February 2017, the FDA approved Siliq (brodalumab) injection, an anti-interleukin-17-receptor monoclonal antibody (blocks IL-17) from Valeant Pharmaceuticals to treat adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

In three randomized, placebo-controlled studies with 4,373 patients, more Siliq-treated patients had clear or almost clear skin compared to placebo-treated patients.

However, serious warnings exist with this product. Suicidal ideation and behavior, including completed suicides, occurred in patients treated with Siliq during trials, but a direct causal association has not been determined. Due to this possible risk, a restricted access program is in place that includes:

  • a Boxed Warning
  • the Siliq REMS Program
  • a Medication Guide

Taltz (ixekizumab) and Cosentyx (secukinumab) are also interleukin-17 inhibitors approved for plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. However, unlike Siliq, Taltz and Cosentyx do not have a suicide boxed warning or a restricted access REMS program requirement.

All three products are given by subcutaneous (under the skin) self-injection.

First-In-Class Agent: Tremfya

In July 2017, Janssen’s Tremfya (guselkumab) gained FDA- approval for treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. In July 2020, it was approved for psoriatic arthritis treatment.

  • Tremfya is a first-in-class biologic that blocks IL-23, an interleukin cytokine that plays a key role in inflammation and symptoms of psoriasis.
  • Tremfya is given as a 100 mg subcutaneous (under the skin) self-injection. The recommended dose is 100 mg at Week 0, Week 4, and every 8 weeks thereafter.
  • When used for psoriatic arthritis, Tremfya may be given alone or in combination with a non-biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) like methotrexate.
  • Common side effects may include upper respiratory tract infections, headache, injection site reactions, joint pain, bronchitis, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, skin fungal infections, and herpes simplex infections.

A second IL-23 blocker, Ilumya (tildrakizumab-asmn) was approved in March of 2018 for plaque psoriasis. It is not currently approved for psoriatic arthritis, like Tremfya.

  • Ilumya has an advantage over Tremfya in that it is given only every 12 weeks (instead of 8) after an initial loading dose at week 0 and week 4. The patient may give by subcutaneous self-injection.
  • The most common (≥1%) side effects with Ilumya treatment are upper respiratory tract infections, injection site reactions, and diarrhea.

Don’t Let Psoriasis Win: Fight Back

While psoriasis may be a lifelong and chronic condition, medications can make a dramatic improvement in skin lesions and one’s sense of well-being. That means no more fears to show a little skin; your embarrassment is dramatically lessened and your self-confidence is boosted.

However, medications for psoriasis are some of the newest treatments on the market and it’s important you understand their use and side effects. Always follow the advice and direction of your health care provider.

Mineral Oil for Skin: The Complete Guide

It seems like we’ve only recently gotten to a place where most people aren’t totally freaked out when they see the word ‘oil’ associated with skincare. We now know that not all oils are created equal, and that there is a whole plethora of different types that not only aren’t bad for your complexion, but can actually do great things for it. But there’s one notable exception that even many seasoned skincare aficionados will steer clear of—mineral oil.

The issue at hand? It’s derived from petroleum, which raises serious red flags for many people, and is notorious for clogging pores. But should you avoid it completely? The dermatologists we spoke to agreed: There isn’t any scientifically-backed evidence that mineral oil clogs pores, and the mineral oils found in skincare will typically be rated as food-grade by the Food and Drug Administration. However, it’s important to keep in mind that all skin is different, and it’s important to monitor how mineral oil reacts to your own skin (especially if you are acne-prone).

Ahead, New York City dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, MD, Claire Chang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City, and New York City dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, MD, help us get to the nitty-gritty details behind this somewhat controversial ingredient and explain the moisturizing benefits it can have.

Mineral Oil

TYPE OF INGREDIENT: Moisturizer

MAIN BENEFITS: Locks moisture into the skin, softens skin, and improves skin barrier function.

WHO SHOULD USE IT: “I recommend mineral oil for those with dry, sensitive skin, and it can even be used in those with conditions such as eczema or psoriasis,” says Chang. She notes that not only is it a good moisturizing ingredient, but it also has a very low risk of allergic reactions or irritation. Mineral oil products aren’t recommended for acne-prone skin.

HOW OFTEN CAN YOU USE IT: This depends largely on the specific product you’re using and how dry your skin is, but generally speaking, it’s fine to use once or twice daily.

WORKS WELL WITH: Humectant ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which attract moisture to the skin, that the mineral oil can then lock in.

DON’T USE WITH: Because it is very occlusive, don’t use it with pore-clogging ingredients, says Nussbaum, particularly if you start to notice blackheads and white heads. (More on whether or not in and of itself can clog your pores in a minute.)

What Is Mineral Oil?

Simply put, mineral oil is a colorless and odorless petrolatum derivative; when used in cosmetics, it’s highly refined and purified and therefore does not contain the contaminants that unrefined petroleum has been known for, explains Nussbaum. Still, this is why it’s often a no-no in ‘clean’ formulas. That being said, “Mineral oil has been a mainstay of healing and moisturizing skincare products for decades, included in well-known products such as Vaseline, Aquaphor Ointment, and baby oil,” points out Chang. Because it’s a large molecule it has limited penetration and instead sits on top of the skin, what’s known as an occlusive ingredient. This is exactly what makes it a good option in moisturizers—since it traps moisture—but also why it gets a bad rap for being pore-clogging. We promise, we’ll get to the legitimacy of those claims in just a second.

More commonly known as petroleum jelly, petrolatum also has a long shelf life, which makes it a commonly-used ingredient in many skincare and makeup products sold today. Common types of products that tend to feature mineral oil in their roster of ingredients include “face, body creams and ointments, as well as eye creams, and foundations, liquid makeup removers and wipes,” says Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, Celebrity Cosmetic Dermatologist and Founder of PFRANKMD & Skin Salon.

Benefits of Mineral Oil For Skin

While mineral oil doesn’t have any anti-aging or antioxidant effects on the skin, as many other oils do, it is a choice occlusive, moisturizing ingredient.

  • Seals moisture into the skin: Think of mineral oil as creating a barrier between your skin and the outside world, protecting it from outside elements like wind and pollution, says Nussbaum. It’s also why it’s been shown in studies to reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), or the loss of water through the skin.
  • Smooths and softens skin: Any oil, mineral oil included, should help leave skin feeling softer, as it is meant to slip into the cracks in between cells to create a smoother texture.

Side Effects of Mineral Oil

This is one ingredient that has a low likelihood of causing any kind of skin reactions, says Goldenberg, which is why it’s often recommended for sensitive skin types. The big sticking point here is the pore-clogging question.

  • Can be pore-clogging: All the derms we spoke with agree that if you’re acne-prone or notice more blackheads or whiteheads after using mineral oil-rich products, skip this ingredient.

That being said, “While it’s been anecdotally associated with exacerbation of acne in acne-prone patients, human studies have failed to confirm its comedogenicity,” says Chang. The bottom line: Proceed with caution if you are prone to pimples, and know that this may not be the best ingredient for you.

Is Mineral Oil Safe?

The short answer to this question is yes, mineral oil as a skincare ingredient is safe for use on the skin and hair. Why? Because the type of mineral oil found in skin and hair care products is graded as safe for consumption by the Food and Drug Administration. “The mineral oil we would find in skincare is typically rated as food grade,” says Joanna Vargas, Celebrity Facialist and Founder of Joanna Vargas Salons and Skin Care.

Regarding whether or not it’s good for the skin, according to our experts, mineral oil itself is non-comedogenic, or not pore clogging, so using it alone won’t leave your pores filled with added gunk. However, because mineral oil tends to form a protective layer on the skin, it may trap some other ingredients onto that top layer of the epidermis, which might lead to clogged pores if that ingredient is known to be pore clogging. “While mineral oil can potentially clog pores, it has a relatively low comedogenicity score in various studies, which in one indicator of propensity to clog pores,” says Dr. Iris Rubin, dermatologist and Founder of SEEN Hair Care. “It is occlusive though, and can therefore trap other ingredients on the skin, potentially leading to clogged pores.”

Oftentimes, mineral oil is featured as an ingredient in combination with other ingredients within a product. If you have acne-prone skin, or have pores that are especially prone to clogging, be sure to check your product labels in order to see and feel the best results. “It is always important to look at a finished formula to be sure if it is non-comedogenic, since the way ingredients combine really matters,” Rubin adds. Common pore-clogging ingredients include carrageenan, Laureth 4, and sodium lauryl sulfate.

That said, the general consensus regarding mineral oil is that it’s better left for dry skin types that aren’t prone to acne symptoms, like pimples, blackheads, or cysts. Why? For its naturally occlusive, barrier-creating tendencies. “It is best for people with dry skin as it creates a protective barrier,” says Dr. Frank. “It creates a protective barrier for the skin for hydration and locks in moisture.”

How to Use It

“The best time to apply mineral oil is a few minutes after showering, when the skin is slightly damp, since mineral oil will help lock some of the moisture into the skin,” suggests Chang. And if you’re using any other products with moisturizing ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, or protective actives such as antioxidants, make the mineral oil product the final step in your routine to seal all of that in, she adds.

Dermatologists’ Verdict

Dermatologists agree that—from the human studies they currently have access to results from—there hasn’t been any scientific evidence that mineral oil is comedogenic (pore-clogging). With that being said, pay close attention to your skin while using mineral oil if you’re acne-prone, as ingredients can have varying effects on different skin types.

As far as its safety, keep in mind that mineral oil is made from a petroleum derivative. And while dermatologists seem to agree that the refining process that goes into adding mineral oil to skincare products purifies the substance of all contaminants (making the ingredient completely safe), for some, it’s still not technically a “clean” beauty product.

Is Vaseline good for dry skin?

If someone told you that a miracle skin cream exists that can lock in natural moisture, heal wounds, soothe irritation and prevent wrinkles — and that on top of that, it costs just pennies per ounce — would you run out to the store to buy it? Chances are you don’t have to; it may already be in your home. We’re talking about good old petroleum jelly, or, as it’s known by its most popular brand name, Vaseline.

Supermodel and television host Tyra Banks has sworn by Vaseline’s anti-aging powers; in 2006 she famously gave each studio audience member a tub of the greasy goop while jumping up and down and screaming about her “biggest beauty secret ever.” [Source: YouTube, TreSugar] And she’s not the only one who loves it; dermatologists recommend it too!

“It’s actually an excellent product — probably our safest product — because it’s incredibly rare for it to irritate anyone’s skin or cause an allergic reaction,” says Chris Adigun, assistant professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “That’s why it’s so great for persistent dryness or dry spots around the eyes or the lips.”

Jeffrey Benabio, MD, a dermatologist with Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, recommends Vaseline to his patients with severely dry skin, eczema, or psoriasis. The fact that it’s so inexpensive means that people are less hesitant to use a lot of it, he adds.

“People think they have to go buy really expensive eczema cream, for example, but then they don’t want to use a lot because they paid so much,” Benabio explains. “But because Vaseline is so economical, they can get into good habits of really using a lot, which is what you need to do to see improvement.”

A study published in 1993 discovered that petroleum jelly does more than just seal in moisture – it also repairs fat cells impaired by dry skin [Ghadially].

Because it’s derived from petroleum, people may be concerned about absorbing toxic, oil-based chemicals into the body. But research has shown that the jelly form used in cosmetics is too thick to seep into the skin, and is only dangerous if ingested. [Source: Go Ask Alice!] In fact, Vaseline can also be used to seal and treat minor wounds and burns, and is safe to use on cracked, chapped, or irritated skin. (In cold weather, it also acts as a shield against windburn for this same reason.)

The only obvious downside to using Vaseline (besides its slippery, shiny, and sometimes messy texture) is the fact that it’s made from fossil fuels, rather than sustainable, renewable resources. For eco-conscious consumers who want other options, says Adigun, there are also beeswax or plant-based alternatives that will form a similar type of barrier on the skin and can be used in the same way.

To fight inflammation and cough: is everything about the benefits and dangers of thyme 90,000 good or bad? Does petroleum jelly relieve wrinkle problems

A longtime inhabitant of our mothers ‘and grandmothers’ cosmetics bags, petroleum jelly, despite the abundance of other, more effective cosmetics, is still not forgotten and takes its place of honor among other creams and ointments.

Still, because cosmetic petroleum jelly is a unique miracle remedy for many misfortunes at a very affordable price. It can be found on a table with cosmetics, in a home medicine cabinet and even in a toolbox, the range of applications is wide, but such a huge versatility of this product still raises certain doubts.

Let’s try to figure out what this tool is, as well as where it can and even should be used.

A bit of history

As it turned out, petroleum jelly is one of the most versatile remedies, which was patented back in 1847.Research in this area was carried out by an American chemist of English origin, Robert Chesbrough.

After the oil boom in 1859, Cesbro became very interested in the new substance, actively communicated with the oilmen and, as a result, drew attention to the sticky mass, slightly resembling paraffin, which formed around the Boers.

The workers noted that it helps a lot with cuts and burns, after which Cesbro began to experiment with an unusual substance, took out useful ingredients for a long time and tried their properties on himself.As a result, he developed the formula of modern cosmetic petroleum jelly, however, he called it “oil jelly.”

The name, as you might guess, confused the consumer, and Robert came up with another brilliant idea to combine two words: “wasser”, from the German “water”, and the Greek “elaion” – “olive oil”. The result was “Vaseline”, which was patented.

The burns and wounds that Robert inflicted on himself during the experiments healed successfully, and the chemist lived to a ripe old age.Today, petroleum jelly is a buttery mass, which is a refined mixture of liquid and solid carbohydrates. It is colorless and odorless, with the exception of some varieties that are used in the technical industry and do not undergo all degrees of purification.

What happens?

Depending on the area of application, petroleum jelly can be natural or artificial. These two types differ, first of all, in their composition: natural petroleum jelly is obtained from deciduous paraffin resins, after which it is purified and bleached with special substances.

Artificial – is obtained by combining paraffin, solid ceresin and refined perfumery or petroleum jelly. Vaseline obtained in the woodworking industry usually has a yellowish color, it is considered technical, and therefore it is used precisely in the technical field: for lubricating parts, protecting metal from corrosion, and so on.

Vaseline obtained in the cosmetic industry is called cosmetic, it has a dull white color, has no taste or smell, and is often included in cosmetic or medical ointments.

Natural petroleum jelly is always more viscous, has no color, as well as taste and smell, if applied to the skin, it will be difficult to wash it off due to sticky spots. Naturally, at home, cosmetic or medical petroleum jelly is used.

Due to its excellent emollient properties, petroleum jelly is an indispensable tool in home cosmetology, of course, it does not penetrate into the deep layers of the skin, does not absorb or nourish it, nevertheless, it covers it with a thin film, which serves as a kind of protective barrier against many external influences …

Main applications

Vaseline has long become a multifunctional folk remedy for many misfortunes, however, it should still be used wisely so as not to harm your own health. Still, this is a rather fatty substance that is not always suitable for people with skin prone to acne and acne formation.

It is believed that it can clog pores, although there is no medical confirmation of this yet. It is also believed that the film that covers the skin after using petroleum jelly prevents sweating, as well as the normal functioning of the sebaceous glands.

And yet, how to use petroleum jelly correctly? The use of this tool covers a very diverse area of our life, perhaps some of the options presented below were not familiar to you at all until that day. We read and educate ourselves.

  • If you are very worried about dry heels, elbows and knees, then simply lubricate them with Vaseline. It perfectly softens rough skin areas, while helping to retain moisture inside. It is convenient to carry out the procedure at night, so that in the morning your heels look soft and tender.
  • Excellent for softening chapped and chapped lips. Vaseline carefully cares for their thin skin, while it does not have any smell or color, which is especially appropriate if men’s lips require care.
  • Another interesting use of this tool: to save a loved one. Apply a little petroleum jelly to the area of your skin where you usually apply perfume, and then rub it lightly. Surprisingly, after such a simple procedure, the time of presence of odorous substances will increase significantly, the aroma will unfold gradually, which will allow you to “smell” throughout the day.
  • Many people know that cosmetic petroleum jelly is also very effective and, importantly, safe. Naturally, for these purposes it is better to use vegetable petroleum jelly: every time before going to bed, apply a small amount of this product to your eyelashes, and after a while their condition will improve significantly.
  • Not a bad care product: it softens and your fingers look much neater. In addition, the cuticle lubricated with such a greasy substance will not get dirty if you paint your nails with varnish, and the manicure will turn out much more neat.
  • Vaseline is a good first aid for severely chapped and dry skin of the face or hands.
  • Did you know you can use it instead of a good makeup remover? All you need is a cotton pad and some Vaseline on it. Massage your face with it, and then wash off everything with warm water. Fast and efficient!
  • When used in conjunction with eyeshadow, it can be moist or shiny.
  • Vaseline & Mix is a simple and affordable blush replacement.
  • Men can use it after shaving, in addition, it perfectly protects the skin from negative external influences: wind, frost, rain, snow and so on.

We used to think of Vaseline as an emollient. But, few people know about the other useful properties of this remedy. Not everyone uses Vaseline for wrinkles, as they doubt or do not know about its effective cosmetic effect. Applying petroleum jelly for the face against wrinkles means making the skin smooth, restoring its elasticity and saving money, since it is inexpensive compared to other creams.

What is the use of petroleum jelly and how does it work

Vaseline base is actively used in the cosmetology industry, added to cream formulations, it serves as a base for the creation of almost all emollients, including therapeutic effects.

Without this product, peeling, laser resurfacing and other effective methods of rejuvenation cannot be performed. It not only has a softening effect, but also serves as protection against infectious irritants. And its moisture-retaining ability is due to a dense layer that is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the skin.

In winter, it serves as an excellent remedy for dry skin caused by wind and frost. In the old days, in this way, the cheeks of babies were saved so that frostbite did not occur. Today, few people use this method, preferring modern creams.

Cosmetologists are completely and completely on the side of petroleum jelly, its uniqueness and usefulness does not need proof.
And in the fight against the first signs of wrinkles on the face, it is simply irreplaceable.

Benefits of Vaseline for the face against wrinkles

If you want to remove wrinkles and thereby rejuvenate your face, without unnecessary efforts and costs, you should buy this usual and not claiming to be a high status product.It is sold in every pharmacy and costs mere pennies. It is odorless, does not cause allergies and practically does not have any harm, it is suitable for any skin, masks and scrubs can be prepared on its basis. If you don’t want to bother, then this oily substance can be used as a standalone cosmetic product.

We offer several recipes for masks and anti-wrinkle creams based on petroleum jelly.

  • Mask for mimic wrinkles. To prepare it, you need to squeeze the juice from the aloe leaf, about 15 ml, then mix with petroleum jelly.This tool can be enough for several applications. Apply a layer of the mixture to your face and let sit for 20 minutes. Then rinse off the mask with warm water, and leave the healthy mixture in a cool place.
  • Anti-aging mask. This recipe effectively fights wrinkles and acne, therefore it is suitable for adolescents and people suffering from this skin ailment. Take an egg, a teaspoon of liquid honey, almond oil and the same amount of petroleum jelly. Whisk the yolk and mix with honey and butter, then add the heated petroleum jelly.After such a procedure, with regular use of the mask, the condition of the skin will improve, and wrinkles will be noticeably smoothed out.
  • Whitening mask. It is made from equal proportions of sour cream, lemon juice and petroleum jelly. Mix all ingredients and keep on face for at least an hour.
  • The mask is universal. You will need: two drops of iodine, 12 g of castor oil, 2 tablespoons of honey and a little petroleum jelly. This mask should nourish, moisturize and smooth the face within two hours.

  • Anti-dry skin cream.The drier the skin, the more wrinkles appear. Therefore, you should constantly moisturize it and use softening recipes. To prepare the cream, you will need: 10 g of petroleum jelly, 40 ml of castor oil, 50 g of butter and a decoction of medicinal chamomile. Heat all oils in a water bath and mix. After applying on the skin of the face and neck, wait 30 minutes, remove the remains with a napkin.
  • Cream with drying effect. You can prepare it as follows: melt petroleum jelly (10g), dilute gelatin (1 tbsp.l), mix the substances and add 40 g of honey, as well as 1 gram of salicylic acid. Hold the mixture in a water bath so that it dissolves completely. Apply the cooled agent to problem areas.

All formulations that are prepared according to these recipes have been tested for many years and real results from use, mostly with positive reviews.
You can realize your dream of youth and beauty for little money. It is not a secret for anyone that many fashionable modern creams do not correspond to the quality that such an ointment, familiar from childhood, claims to be, can quite compete with them in the fight against the appearance of wrinkles.

Reviews of Vaseline anti-wrinkle

Natasha “I have been using Vaseline for a long time as a base for cosmetics, I have dry skin, so it helps me out a lot.”

Vika “Hello. I want to write in support of such a simple and familiar remedy as petroleum jelly. I never thought that this common remedy is so good. I have been using it for a month as an anti-wrinkle remedy, and the result is already visible. The husband said that it was cheap and angry, there was no need to spend money on expensive creams, and they were not all suitable, there was already a sad experience.So I highly recommend trying it as a rejuvenating agent. ”

Sergey 36 years old “I don’t know how about wrinkles, but from cracked heels, a real remedy!”

Margot “Recently switched to petroleum jelly as an emollient, as creams do not help. It absorbs quickly and lays down very well. Skin like a child’s, and most importantly an affordable price. ”

Can petroleum jelly be used to treat wrinkles around the eyes

The answer is unequivocally positive.The fact is that there are no sebaceous glands in the area around the eyes, and therefore the skin is drier than anywhere else on the face. At this point, the appearance of wrinkles occurs first.

The property of our skin is such that over time it becomes less elastic, folds appear and the surface becomes wrinkled.

This is due to many factors, but primarily biological. It is impossible to stop the processes occurring in the body, but any person is quite capable of postponing age-related changes in some way.

Vaseline is that “magic wand” that is able to retain moisture in the epithelium. It can serve as additional protection when going outside. Regardless of the weather, in heat or frost, windy or dusty weather, the skin near the eyes, thanks to the protective film, will be reliably covered. Vaseline base is applied under a nourishing or foundation cream.

There is one “but”, the fact is that the frequent use of this tool can cause metabolic disturbances, so you will have to use it only when it is especially necessary.

Here are examples of when the use of petroleum jelly is justified:

  • If the skin is too dry, you can lubricate the areas around the eyes, cheekbones, lips, hands with it;
  • Make night vaseline masks for hands in the evening before going to bed, after preparing gloves;
  • For severely hardened parts of the body, elbows, heels, knees, etc.;
  • Use as lip gloss when mixed with lipstick;
  • Use for eyelash growth. Under the influence of petroleum jelly, they become thicker and grow faster;
  • For massage treatments;
  • For fixing the shape of the eyebrows;
  • As a body treatment for an even tan;
  • Before going outside in case it is too frosty or hot.

Vaseline is in essence an emulsion, which is created by their combination of water and oil. There are no harmful substances in it, and it is not dangerous for the body, since it does not penetrate into the blood.

The only caveat may be a side effect in the form of an allergic reaction in case of intolerance to the product, but this is extremely rare. You can safely use it as an inexpensive, effective and affordable cosmetic product for both young people and more mature people.

Possessing a viscous oily consistency, petroleum jelly is easily distributed over the skin area.This creamy cosmetic can be used to soften rough skin, usually found on the elbows, knees and heels. Having smeared the area that requires attention with a thin layer and leaving it overnight, you can get good results by the morning.

For the procedure of “healing” with petroleum jelly to be most successful and effective, before smearing flaky, cracked or dehydrated skin, you must first steam it in hot or warm water.The pores of the skin will open slightly and then the petroleum jelly nutrition will be more intense. If the skin is coarse, there are growths and “corns”, then steaming in water and processing with a fine pumice stone or brush to remove dead skin is simply required.

But you should not abuse cosmetic treatment with petroleum jelly, as edema may appear. But you can safely turn to Vaseline for help in cold weather in order to prevent chapped lips. Chapped lips heal just as quickly with regular lubrication.

Since the cause of the appearance of wrinkles is dehydration of the skin – these are petroleum jelly masks – this is also the prevention of premature aging of the skin, as well as the ability to get rid of small mimic wrinkles.

With the “participation” of Vaseline, you can come up with various scrubbing agents, de Vaseline will be the base, and the other component is the abrasive. In this case, sea salt will serve as a good abrasive in the scrub. The resulting mixture should be rubbed into the skin with gentle massage movements.

Vaseline is not only an emollient, but also a soothing agent. Therefore, if you do not have an after-shave cream or lotion on hand, you can soothe the irritated skin with a thin layer of petroleum jelly.

Vaseline can be applied to the damaged area of the skin with atopic dermatitis as a soothing and anti-inflammatory agent. You can speed up the healing process of the dermis after the treatment after a full tattoo.

The range of application of petroleum jelly for cosmetic purposes is wide.It is also used to restore hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. Dullness, dryness and lifelessness as a result of poor nutrition or unfavorable factors of an unhealthy environment can also be returned by applying cosmetic petroleum jelly.

To restore a healthy look to your hair, it is enough to use boric petroleum jelly to eliminate the problem of split ends. It is rubbed into the scalp in moderation, and after 30-40 minutes you can already wash it off. Nutrition will be uniform, mainly focused on “revitalizing” the root.You can also work on dry and brittle hair ends. Lubricating the ends with petroleum jelly after each wash, you can see the first results of strengthening. As it should be before a typical treatment for the ends, it is necessary to visit the hairdresser and cut them off. To restore the beauty of eyelashes or eyebrows, apply mono Vaseline with a special brush, in a thin layer at night.

In 1859 English chemist Robert Chesbrough
invented petroleum jelly. He discovered the amazing properties of the obtained substance – healing, softening and protecting the skin.He personally tested the new remedy on himself, lubricating burns and cracks on the skin with a mixture.

History of invention

Initially, Robert Chesbrough named the new product petroleum jelly. But this name did not attract buyers, so the inventor decided to use a combination of two words: German “wasser” – water and Greek “elaion” – olive oil.

In 1872, Cesbro received a patent for the production of the product, and on May 14, 1878, he patented Vaseline as a trademark.

The history of “Vaseline” is unique, because it is a rare case when the name of a trademark goes into general use as a common name for a product category.

Vaseline happens …

Vaseline is natural
– it is obtained from hardwood paraffin resins, followed by cleaning and bleaching with special substances. Natural petrolatum, in comparison with artificial, is more viscous, transparent, colorless, tasteless and odorless, has antimicrobial properties and attracts water.When applied to the skin, it is difficult to rinse off and leaves a sticky residue.

Artificial
Vaseline is a combination of solid ceresin and paraffin with refined vaseline or perfume oil. Artificial petrolatum is obtained in the woodworking (technical petroleum jelly) or cosmetic (cosmetic petroleum jelly) industry. This petroleum jelly is not very viscous, cloudy white or yellowish, greasy, odorless and tasteless. Artificial petroleum jelly can be technical, medical and cosmetic.

Application

Today, petroleum jelly is used in the electrical industry, to obtain greases, to protect metals from corrosion, as a laxative in medicine and as a component of cosmetic creams in cosmetics.

Where and how can petroleum jelly be used at home?

For heels
. It is believed that petroleum jelly does not moisturize the skin, but only creates a protective barrier that helps to retain moisture. But be that as it may, it is petroleum jelly that can be used to soften rough skin.Apply petroleum jelly overnight to rough skin on elbows, heels, knees, and in the morning they will be much softer.

For smell
. Vaseline is a great way to prolong the effect of perfume – before sprinkling perfume on your wrists and neck, first apply a little Vaseline to these areas. The thing is that petroleum jelly absorbs the smell and retains it, spreading it throughout the day.

For eyebrows
. In order to give your eyebrows the correct and lasting shape, it is not necessary to use a special gel.Take a clean cosmetic brush, squeeze a drop of petroleum jelly onto it, comb your eyebrows into the desired shape. When the petroleum jelly dries, the eyebrows will not only be fixed for the whole day, but they will also begin to shine. By the way, the same trick can be done with hair. Petroleum jelly will not weigh down your hair, but it will make it look smooth.

For face
. Petroleum jelly can be used as a makeup remover. Take a cloth or paper towel, saturate it with petroleum jelly and use it to remove makeup.Vaseline will remove even waterproof makeup.

Body
. Petroleum jelly can be used to make a simple and inexpensive body exfoliation. Mix petroleum jelly with salt to make a salt scrub, or brown sugar to make a sugar scrub. This scrub will gently cleanse the skin.

For lips
. Are your lips dry? Apply petroleum jelly to them at night – and in the morning they will be fresh and hydrated.

For treatment
. Vaseline is used to lubricate injured places with burns, cracks, drying of the nasal mucosa, psoriasis, and so on.Note that in this case – a thin layer and in small quantities.

For children
. This is one of the tricks that young mothers can take note of. If, when washing, the child cries from getting shampoo in his eyes, lubricate his eyebrows with petroleum jelly. It is petroleum jelly that forms a protective visor that will not allow shampoo to get into the eyes.

From scars
. Vaseline will not save you from acne, but it will help eliminate their consequences – scars that form due to acne.It is necessary to treat the affected skin areas with petroleum jelly from the moment the scars appear, avoiding their coarsening.

By the way, petroleum jelly has practically no contraindications for use, very rarely an allergic reaction can occur in the form of a rash of a different nature at the site of application.

Vaseline is well known to many since childhood. This is available
and still popular
product consists of a mixture of liquid and solid carbohydrates, has a thick consistency and color from transparent to caramel.

Vaseline is of artificial and natural origin, depending on the purpose of use, it is divided into technical, medical and cosmetic
.

Benefit

Vaseline, when applied to the skin, forms the thinnest film that helps to avoid moisture loss from the skin
. This property is indispensable in frosty or windy weather, when, under the influence of unfavorable conditions, the skin quickly dries out and coarsens
.

The use of Vaseline prevents chapping and cracking of the epidermis.

Most creams cannot cope with this task – the high water content in cosmetics leads to the fact that in severe frosts they simply freeze
, thereby exacerbating skin damage.

It is known that the inhabitants of the Far North smear their faces with fish oil
before going outside during the cold season.

But since this tool has a strong odor and an unpleasant consistency, in the middle lane they prefer to replace it with inexpensive and no less effective petroleum jelly.

The film formed by this popular product protects the face well against external contamination
. Without penetrating deep into the dermis, petroleum jelly prevents infections from entering the pores
and the formation of inflammatory processes.

Protection of the epidermis is especially necessary after peeling or dermabrasion, when the young layers of the skin are characterized by increased sensitivity and trauma.

Harm

Contrary to popular belief, petroleum jelly cannot effectively moisturize the skin.It does not penetrate the pores
and serves only as protection against moisture loss.

A layer of petroleum jelly on the face does not allow the skin to “breathe”, pores are clogged
and the output of metabolic products is disrupted.

A dense film of the product traps sebum on the face, thereby aggravating the oily skin
. Evaporation of water from the surface of the epidermis is impaired, which can lead to slight swelling.

Important advice from the editors

If you want to improve the condition of your skin, special attention should be paid to the creams that you use.A frightening figure – 97% of well-known brands of creams contain substances that poison our body. The main components, due to which all the troubles on the labels are designated as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, E214-E219. Parabens have a negative effect on the skin and can also cause hormonal imbalances. But the worst thing is that this muck gets into the liver, heart, lungs, accumulates in the organs and can cause cancer. We advise you not to use the products that contain these substances.Recently, the experts of our editorial office conducted an analysis of natural creams, where the first place was taken by products from Mulsan Cosmetic, a leader in the production of all-natural cosmetics. All products are manufactured under strict quality control and certification systems. We recommend visiting the official online store mulsan.ru. If you doubt the naturalness of your cosmetics, check the expiration date, it should not exceed one year of storage.

Application

Despite the conflicting properties of the product, petroleum jelly is widely used
in cosmetics (both industrial and homemade):

  • it is part of creams
    for use in adverse weather;
  • Many makeup removers contain petroleum jelly due to its ability to dissolve cosmetics perfectly;
  • helps to soften the skin in the treatment of acne;
  • No lipstick will better protect your lips from chapping than one based on petroleum jelly.

Vaseline also makes a great homemade scrub
for the face.

Simply mix the product with sea salt or ordinary coarse salt
and apply to face, rubbing gently into problem areas.

Prevent dehydration
for sensitive skin around the eyes in rooms with low humidity, apply a small amount at night. In the morning, it is recommended to wash your face with cold water or rub your face with ice cubes.

This method will keep the skin moist and prevent the formation of new wrinkles.

Recipes for masks

Based on petroleum jelly, there are a large number of recipes for skin care, their effectiveness
has been tested by time many times. The masks include inexpensive components that can be easily purchased at any pharmacy or supermarket.

Anti-aging mask:
combine a tablespoon of honey with a spoonful of castor oil, add five drops of pharmaceutical iodine.Mix one teaspoon of cosmetic petroleum jelly with the resulting mass.

We need liquid vitamins A and E, add five drops to the mask. We mix everything thoroughly and apply it on the face three times a week in the morning and before bedtime. We store the mixture in the refrigerator until full use.

Mask for wrinkles around the eyes:
squeeze the juice from the aloe leaf, mix the aloe juice with petroleum jelly (a teaspoon), add the juice of a quarter of a lemon. Apply to the skin of the lower eyelids. Wash off with cool water after 15 minutes.

Toning mask:
melt two tablespoons of petroleum jelly in a water bath, add the protein of one egg and a spoonful of almond oil to it.

Stir and apply on the face after steaming.

After 15 minutes we wash our face with cool water. We store the mixture in the refrigerator.

Moisturizing mask:
Finely rub a quarter of raw potatoes, add a spoonful of petroleum jelly and a spoonful of ground oatmeal. Apply the mixture to the face for 20 minutes. We repeat every evening for two weeks.

Anti-chapping lip mask:
Mix a spoonful of thick sour cream with an equal amount of petroleum jelly. Lubricate the lips with the mixture every evening during the cold season. Such a mask will cope with cracks and peeling in a few days.

Effect of use

Protective properties
Vaseline in the composition of home masks will have the most favorable effect on the condition of the skin:

  1. At low temperatures, the skin remains smooth and velvety.
  2. Fine lines will become less visible.
  3. Damage and cracks in the epidermis will heal quickly.

The film formed by petroleum jelly when applied to the face as part of masks will allow the rest of the therapeutic components to penetrate deeply
in pores.

Since petroleum jelly does not allow oxygen to penetrate into the skin cells, too frequent use
masks can clog pores and lead to acne.

Application of large quantities
overnight products will cause the formation of puffiness and bags under the eyes.Therefore, it is recommended to use masks no more than twice a week.

For visible skin damage due to weather conditions daily application is allowed
healing masks until complete recovery.

Contraindications

Vaseline rarely causes allergic
manifestations.

Only individual intolerance to the drug can serve as a contraindication.

Do not forget to check the expiration date when buying
, indicated on the back of the jar.

Vaseline is not a remedy for the skin, but its use will help to withstand the aggressive effects of the external environment
. Its correct application will quickly relieve the skin from damage and keep it smooth and elastic.

  • For severely hardened parts of the body, elbows, heels, knees, etc.;
  • Use as lip gloss when mixed with lipstick;
  • Use for eyelash growth. Under the influence of petroleum jelly, they become thicker and grow faster;
  • For massage treatments;
  • For fixing the shape of the eyebrows;
  • As a body treatment for an even tan;
  • Before going outside in case it is too frosty or hot.

Vaseline is in essence an emulsion, which is created by their combination of water and oil.There are no harmful substances in it, and it is not dangerous for the body, since it does not penetrate into the blood.

The only caveat may be a side effect in the form of an allergic reaction in case of intolerance to the product, but this is extremely rare. You can safely use it as an inexpensive, effective and affordable cosmetic product for both young people and more mature people.

Vaseline is a relatively recent cosmetic product. In the middle of the 19th century, it was invented by the Englishman Robert Chesbrough.While personally testing his development, Mr. discovered that oil jelly has an amazing property – to heal, moisturize and soften the skin. And he patented it under the familiar name “Vaseline” (from “wasser” + “elaion”, that is, “water”, German, “olive oil”, Greek).

The use of high-quality petroleum jelly is justified by the effectiveness, safety, simplicity and low cost of this product. It does not heal, but it has beneficial properties, thanks to which it became so popular:

  • Formation of protective barrier
    .When applied to the skin, petroleum jelly forms a thin film that is impervious to water. Thanks to this, the dermis does not lose its moisture. Note that he does not share water with the epidermis, but simply does not allow him to lose it. This protective property of the substance makes it an effective remedy against the appearance of wrinkles, as well as against inflammation, because the protective film, without releasing water, does not allow infections to the skin. After dermabrasion or peeling, when the epidermis is very sensitive and prone to injury, the use of petroleum jelly or a product based on it is simply salvation.

The use of Vaseline is especially important for residents of those places where the weather is very harsh: frosty, windy. In the Far North, Eskimos, in order to protect themselves from frostbite, smear their face and hands with fish oil, which exudes an indescribable aroma. The use of petroleum jelly in the absence of a disgusting odor, just like fish oil, saves the skin from chapping and cracking.

Vaseline is not harmful to the skin, its improper use is harmful. The protective film that it forms on the body retains moisture, preventing it from evaporating, but the same property of the substance can lead to edema if it is used immoderately often and unnecessarily, because the evaporation of water from the surface of the epidermis is disturbed.

How to use petroleum jelly to moisturize your face

At home, you can apply petroleum jelly to the face skin to moisturize it: either smear it with a pure substance, or mix it with chamomile infusion and castor oil (1:10:10). And if you combine it with other ingredients, then, in addition to retaining moisture in the epidermis, you get an additional effect:

  • Rejuvenation
    . Whisk half the yolk, combine with 0.25 cups of chamomile infusion and 0.25 cups of almond oil.Add 0.5 tsp. honey and salt. Whisk the resulting composition thoroughly and combine with 2 tsp. petroleum jelly (pre-melt it in a water bath). Place the petroleum jelly in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Before going to bed, apply the anti-aging mass to the previously cleansed face and neck, in the morning remove the remnants with a napkin.

Vaseline will help the sponges if the skin is chapped and cracked. Use it neat or mixed with chocolate by melting in the microwave and mixing. It is also used for traces of acne: as soon as a scar has formed, without waiting for the moment of its coarsening, lubricate the affected area on the skin with petroleum jelly.They can also remove cosmetics, even waterproof ones.

The use of petroleum jelly also has a good effect on the condition of the skin of the body, it softens, becomes smooth and pleasant to the touch, moreover, the areas of its use are very different:

  1. For heels
    . Lubricate your heels with Vaseline and put on your socks. Already in the morning you will notice a positive effect – the skin will soften.And if you do this for 30 days, then the cracks that have arisen from dry legs will heal, and the heels will become even softer.

To save on expensive perfume, lubricate the skin on the wrists and on the neck with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, and only then sprinkle with perfume, so their scent will last longer. And if you apply it on the area above the eyebrows and on the eyebrows themselves, then when washing the head, the soap solution will drain away without getting into the eyes, this is especially true for babies.

The area around the eyes is practically devoid of sebaceous glands and therefore is dry and ages first.Vaseline, covering it with a sufficiently dense layer and not absorbing into it, thereby blocks the loss of moisture. It is a wonderful prophylactic against the appearance of wrinkles.

90,000 10 important properties of petroleum jelly – Medcentre.com.ua

As it turned out, petroleum jelly is a favorite in medical cosmetics because of its ability to retain moisture in the skin. Petroleum jelly can reduce scar hyperemia and the risk of infection, promote wound healing, and improve eczema, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in children.

Vaseline appeared on the medical cosmetics market more than 150 years ago, still remaining an indispensable tool in certain situations.

Relief of symptoms in eczema and psoriasis

The skin of people with eczema or psoriasis does not retain moisture well.And if the skin dries out too much, it becomes vulnerable to bacteria. Petroleum jelly is great at retaining moisture in the skin and helping medications work better. In this way, inflammation is reduced and itching is minimized as much as possible. It is best to apply petroleum jelly right after a bath or shower when the skin is damp.

Treatment of atopic dermatitis in children

Vaseline can be used to reduce itching of the skin in newborns and infants. If your family has a tendency to atopic dermatitis, then petroleum jelly is the most budgetary option for preventing this condition.You can use petroleum jelly in babies as early as three weeks after birth. Apply the product to well-moisturized skin – then the risk of developing dermatitis will be minimal.

Folk method to get rid of lice

It turns out that with the help of petroleum jelly (like mayonnaise!), You can save yourself from lice. The thick cream can kill adult insects, but has no effect on nits (eggs). Therefore, this method can be considered effective with a stretch – it is better to use pharmaceutical agents against lice (better – based on permethrin: “Nittifor”, “Higia”, “Para Plus”).

Prevention of calluses and corns

If you are going to have serious physical activity (running or long walking), smear your feet with Vaseline – especially your toes and heels.

This will prevent you from rubbing the areas where it happens most often. If a blister has already appeared, then smearing it with petroleum jelly will speed up healing.

Reduction of diaper rash in a child

Petroleum jelly protects the skin from external irritants such as feces and urine. Use Vaseline between diaper changes if your baby has a rash.Dermatologists favor this product because it is free of fragrances, colors and preservatives. By the way, there is no evidence that expensive creams work better than regular petroleum jelly. But this does not mean that you should stop using the cream that is suitable for the child and start using the budget Vaseline. Choose what suits your baby.

Vaseline helps with hemorrhoids

Vaseline is also effective for delicate problems – it protects the sensitive skin of the anal area and facilitates bowel movements.It also reduces the itching and pain of hemorrhoids.

Vaseline protects against chapping

Apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the area of your skin to be protected from cold and wind – it will do the job perfectly. But if you have oily skin, avoid areas prone to breakouts – petroleum jelly can clog your sebaceous and sweat glands.

Moisturizing the skin around the eyes

The skin around the eyes is easily damaged because it is thin and sensitive. Vaseline will give your eyelids extra moisture.And with the help of petroleum jelly, you can easily and safely remove eye makeup. But still try not to get the product in your eyes.

Protecting the paws of the animal

Before a winter walk with your dog, smear the pads of its paws with petroleum jelly – it will not only protect from the cold, but also from the negative effects of salt, which is sprinkled on the sidewalks. Petroleum jelly will perfectly moisturize your pet’s skin if it suffers from atopic dermatitis.

Nourishing Nail Cream

To keep your nails in good condition, you no longer need expensive products – with ordinary Vaseline you can moisturize your hands from fingers to elbows.This also applies to brittle nails – the tool will make them visually smoother and stronger. If your hands are dry, use Vaseline – again, better on slightly damp skin.

What should not be done with petroleum jelly?

  1. Do you feel uncomfortable applying Vaseline with your hands because it is greasy? Use a small spatula. If you moisten your feet or hands with petroleum jelly at night, wear gloves or socks – an oil-based product, so it can easily stain bedding.
  2. Do not use petroleum jelly for burns, because it retains not only moisture, but also the warmth of the skin.
  3. Do not eat petroleum jelly – in large quantities, it can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting. Keep Vaseline out of the reach of children and pets. A little petroleum jelly on the lips against chapping is okay, but if the child cannot swallow or even coughs, call an ambulance immediately.
  4. Do not use petroleum jelly during sex – it can damage latex condoms and the woman is at risk of developing bacterial vaginosis. If you need lubrication, go for water-based products.

Which skin diseases can celandine be useful for

Photo pixabay.com

My grandmother had great respect for celandine, and I love him very much.I have been growing this plant on my site for many years, although my soil was not to his taste. My grandmother had sand all around, but many plants grew excellently on it. On my own loam with a close occurrence of groundwater, only a few feel good.

Celandine is famous for its ability to cleanse the skin, in principle, from these powerful properties, and its name originated. True, he has many popular names: yellow grass, golden, cleansing grass, swallow grass, devil’s milk, witch’s grass, warthog, warthog, gladiator, glecopar, gleckopar, icterus, reddish, cow grass, bloodworm, bloodworm, tang or crotch grass, gorse, gore, buttermilk, euphorbia yellow, yellow milkweed, liverwort, podtinnik, cleaver, rosopath, rostopach, rostopach, break apart, silidone’s herb, silidonia, celidonia, selinomia, gray potion, cleanser, yellow guillemot, cleanser, purest neatness, purebred, nutcracker, yaskovka, adam’s head, aksamet, hairwort, starodub, field mustard, curl, larkspur, night blindness, buttercup, St. John’s wort, gorse.And my grandmother called celandine a doctor with a capital letter for its ability to effectively help with various diseases.

Why do we forget?

Recently, I began to notice that many people have forgotten how to use it for skin diseases, and when I advise using the herb, for example, for the treatment of psoriasis, they are surprised or mistrustful. And when, having begun treatment, they notice the first results, they rejoice like little children.

What’s going on with us? After all, our ancestors knew how to appreciate the power of herbs and thanks to our grandmothers many recipes have come down to our days, and we so easily forget and lose them.We sit on chemotherapy, and then we wonder why they began to get sick more. Is it easier to buy tablets than to prepare an infusion or decoction? Only it will not lead to anything good. I am convinced that in 10-15 years, many will be convinced of this themselves. The number of diseases is growing, and we have forgotten how to take good care of our health, focusing on plants. I myself have thought more than once to reduce my plot, because it is easier to buy vegetables and fruits in the store, and medicinal herbs – in the pharmacy. But who guarantees me their quality and then returns health to me and my loved ones? Toxins that enter our body with plants do not act with lightning speed (with the exception of poisonous plants), many accumulate for years, simultaneously destroying organs, which are rarely restored later.Maybe it’s time to stop and think? I am glad when someone, having visited my site, begins to grow medicinal herbs, including celandine. It grows well in our climate, but like most wonderful plants, it is not found in the wild.

Psoriasis

The number of people with psoriasis is growing. Every year more and more patients who are not helped by medicines turn to me for help.I believe that among your relatives and friends there will be people who have faced the same problem, and this recipe will help them. Even the advanced form of psoriasis can be cured with it. Mix one tablespoon of dry crushed celandine herb, one tablespoon of St. John’s wort, one tablespoon of crushed marshmallow root, one tablespoon of valerian root, and three tablespoons of string herb. Pour in a thermos one tablespoon of the collection with one glass of boiling water, insist overnight, strain and add boiling water to the original volume of liquid.Take 1/2 cup warm twice a day forty minutes after meals.

For allergies

For the treatment of psoriasis for food and drug allergies, mix one tablespoon of dry crushed celandine herb, one tablespoon of oregano herb, two tablespoons of crushed licorice root and three tablespoons of herb burst. Pour in a thermos one tablespoon of the collection with one glass of boiling water, insist overnight, strain and add boiling water to the original volume of liquid.Take 1/2 cup warm twice a day forty minutes after meals until the condition improves.

Warts

Many people know about the property of celandine to remove warts. For treatment, fresh milky juice is used, which is applied to the affected areas of the skin three to four times a day. But such treatment does not always give positive results: the warts do not go away for a long time or soon reappear. This indicates a decrease in immunity.In this case, a decoction will help, which must be taken orally.

Decoction recipe
Mix one tablespoon of dry chopped celandine herb, one tablespoon of plantain leaves, one tablespoon of chopped dandelion roots, two tablespoons of horsetail, two tablespoons of nettle and two tablespoons of lemon balm. Pour two tablespoons of the collection with three glasses of boiling water, bring to a boil, cool and strain. Take 1/3 cup three times a day half an hour before meals.The course of treatment is five to seven days. Then take the same break and, if necessary, repeat the treatment.

Ointment
You can also make an ointment. To prepare it, my grandmother mixed fresh juice or celandine powder with petroleum jelly in a 1: 4 ratio. This ointment is good not only for removing warts, but also for treating calluses and removing age spots.

Eczema

I always warn people who turn to me for help that it is impossible to cure eczema with ointments.You can only improve the condition for a short time, and then again search for a treatment. The reason lies in dysbiosis, which is usually the root cause of eczema. So, without the restoration of the intestinal microflora, any treatment will be ineffective. By the way, celandine can also help with this.

Broth to restore intestinal microflora
Mix one tablespoon of dry crushed celandine herb, one tablespoon of peppermint, one tablespoon of crushed dandelion roots, one tablespoon of fennel fruit, and two tablespoons of crushed buckthorn bark.Pour one tablespoon of the collection with two glasses of boiling water, simmer over low heat for twenty minutes, cool and strain. Take 1/2 cup of broth half an hour before meals three times a day. The course of treatment is seven days.

Juice
Celandine juice can be used to treat eczema. To do this, lubricate the affected skin two to three times a day. At the beginning of treatment, severe itching may appear, but it will soon disappear.

Infusion
If you have been suffering from eczema for more than a year, then infusion will help you to reduce the number of exacerbations.Mix one tablespoon of dry chopped violet tricolor herb, one tablespoon of elderflower flowers, two tablespoons of celandine herb, three tablespoons of St. Pour one tablespoon of the collection with one glass of boiling water, leave for twenty minutes, strain and add boiling water to the initial volume of liquid. Take 1/2 cup three times a day after meals at the first sign of an exacerbation.

Furunculosis

A boil can be single, in which case it opens safely and does not appear anymore, but sometimes localized furunculosis develops, in which multiple purulent inflammations appear, located next to each other. Multiple furunculosis is already a chronic process in which boils appear on the body in different places. The disease can be caused by a decrease in immunity, a deficiency of B vitamins and even diabetes mellitus, so it can be difficult to cope with furunculosis, and treatment can take a long time.

Oil
Oil can be prepared to treat boils. To do this, mix half a glass of dry crushed herbs (you can take a powder) with two glasses of linseed or sea buckthorn oil and insist in a dark place for ten days. By this time, the grass usually settles to the bottom, so I do not filter the oil, but carefully pour the amount of oil necessary for treatment into another container with a tight lid. I put a napkin or cotton pad soaked in oil on the boil and fix it with a bandage.The procedure is best done at night. Usually this time is enough for the boil to open.

Decoction
With multiple boils, it is advisable to prepare a decoction. To do this, mix one tablespoon of dry chopped celandine herb, two tablespoons of yarrow herb and two tablespoons of chamomile. Pour two tablespoons of the collection with three glasses of boiling water, simmer over low heat for half an hour, cool and strain. Take 1/2 cup three times a day half an hour before meals.The course of treatment is from five to ten days. After a short break, the treatment can be repeated.

Emollient for atopic dermatitis in children

Author: pediatrician Tekutyeva Olga Nikolaevna

Emollients for atopic dermatitis are one of the means of treatment and prevention of atopic dermatitis in infants.Pediatrician Olga Tekutyeva tells about what emollients are, what types they are, and how to choose the right emollients for a child.

What are emollients?

Emollients are fats and fat-like substances. They are part of cosmetics designed to care for dry, damaged skin. Emollients are also used for dermatitis in children. After using this product, the skin remains hydrated and soft for longer.She is less susceptible to traumatic factors: rubbing with clothes, sweat, tap water, soap, washing powder, low temperature, sunlight.

The use of an emollient reduces the risk of bacterial infection of the affected skin by improving its barrier properties.

How do emollients work for atopic dermatitis?

The skin of children with atopic dermatitis has a special structure. It lacks a binding protein, and does not form a full-fledged protective lipid layer.Such skin loses a lot of moisture, becomes dry, flakes, cracks. Allergens and pathogenic microorganisms penetrate through the imperfect skin barrier. This leads to the appearance of signs of inflammation: redness, itching, cracks, weeping, abscesses.

For many years, scientists have tried to “cure” this deficient lipid layer, linking its development to food allergies or gut conditions. And only in recent decades it has become clear that a change in the structure of the skin is a genetic feature and cannot be cured.All that remains is to help the skin cope with its function. This is where emollients are needed. Since the skin itself cannot create a lipid barrier, it must be created artificially with the help of cosmetics.

When applied to the skin, the emollient creates a thin film similar in structure to the natural lipid layer. This prevents moisture loss and protects the skin from the effects of traumatic factors. According to the latest clinical guidelines, the use of emollients is the mainstay of treatment for babies with atopic dermatitis.

Correct use of emollients allows:

  • to reduce the frequency of exacerbations, or prevent them altogether;
  • to reduce the need for the use of steroid, antibacterial and antihistamines;
  • to reduce subjective sensations: itching, flaking, skin tightness;
  • to accelerate the healing of small wounds and cracks;
  • to reduce the risk of attaching a fungal or bacterial infection;
  • According to recent studies, the use of emollients may reduce the risk of developing allergic and autoimmune diseases in the future.

How to use emollients correctly for atopic dermatitis in children?

  • emollient is applied in a generous thick layer. This creates a longer protection, and the barrier will be more durable;
  • emollient is applied to the entire skin, even the one that has no visible damage. All skin has a special structure, and not only its inflamed areas;
  • The emollients are not rubbed into the skin, but applied to the skin in a circular motion. The goal is to create a protective film on the surface;
  • emollients should be used continuously and for a long time.Long-term use of cosmetics has no contraindications. Some current clinical guidelines recommend starting to use them during remission, when the skin is clean or has minimal damage;
  • The frequency of application of the emollient for dermatitis depends on the condition of the epithelium. At least the baby’s skin needs to be treated twice a day. During periods of exacerbation, the frequency can reach up to 5-6 times a day or more;
  • apply emollients after each wash.This is especially true for babies. After each washing of the baby, an emollient should be applied to the skin. For older children, it is convenient to have containers with a small amount of product and apply them to the face and hands after each wash;
  • After bathing or washing, the emollient should be applied as soon as possible. Ideally, no later than 3 minutes after the end of the water treatment. Before applying the emollient, the child’s skin is not wiped dry, but is gently and carefully blotted with a towel;
  • when using an emollient and a drug at the same time, the interval between their application should be about an hour.

Do emollients have contraindications or disadvantages?

Emollients are not a medicine, but a care product. This means that there are no special indications for them. Such cosmetics can also be used for ordinary skin to maintain or improve its condition. However, there are still some restrictions on the use of such cosmetics:

  • As with any other skin care product, an allergic contact reaction may occur to the emollient.Therefore, before applying generously to the entire surface of the skin, test it on a small area of the inner forearm. Apply a small amount of emollient and observe the reaction during the day;
  • Do not apply the emollient to skin with acute inflammatory rash, wetness and fresh scratching. Filming will increase the risk of spreading the infection. Such skin must first be treated with medications.
  • emollient with urea or ammonia in the composition should not be applied to areas with injured skin.When such products are applied to injured skin, a burning sensation occurs in these areas.
  • Before you start using the emollient, you should show your baby to a doctor. Your doctor may recommend using the care product and medicine at the same time. Or, first, cure dermatitis, and then pick up a cosmetic product;

There are some inconveniences when using emollients. For example, with abundant and frequent application, underwear and bed linen get dirty.Some mothers of my patients over a year old pay attention to the fact that children do not like the feeling of a thick layer of cosmetic product on the skin. However, most toddlers quickly get used to it.

Another inconvenience occurs when emollients added to the water during bathing, or applied before bathing, leave deposits on the surface of the bathtub. This plaque has to be washed off with detergents.

Types of emollients

There are three main types of emollients.

  • Natural. They contain vegetable oils: peach, almond, shea butter, jojoba, cocoa, lanolin, wax. Their advantage is that they are of natural origin. The disadvantage is that they can cause an allergic reaction. More often, adult patients cannot tolerate natural ingredients. Therefore, a cosmetic product on a natural basis is a good choice for a baby.
  • Chemical. They use substances obtained in the process of oil refining.These include: paraffin, silicone, mineral oils, petroleum jelly. Such emollients create a thick film and make it difficult for the skin to breathe. However, they rarely cause an allergic reaction. For children, this is the least preferred type of cosmetic product.
  • Synthetic. They are based on substances obtained as a result of chemical synthesis. For example, dimethicones and cyclomethicones. Such substances perform well their barrier function, to a lesser extent interfere with skin breathing and rarely cause an allergic reaction.

Additionally, moisturizing agents are included in the composition of emollients: urea, lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, glycerol, and the like. Some cosmetics also include fat-soluble vitamins: A, E, PP.

Ready-made cosmetics based on emollients are divided into types:

  • Ointments – products made on the basis of fats. They have the most dense consistency and are applied to skin with severe dryness and flaking.Children rarely need this type of emollient.
  • Creams – water-fat-based products. They have a pleasant consistency, are well absorbed and moisturize the skin. Such products are the most common option for skin care in children and with atopic dermatitis.
  • Emulsion is a water-fat-based product with a more liquid consistency than cream. It is convenient to apply this product to large areas of the body. They are usually sold in high volume vials.
  • Lotion is a water-based product. It is preferable to use it on skin prone to oozing (inflammation with blistering). This type of cosmetic product is not suitable for dry skin.

In the line of skin care products, there are special products that are added to the water when bathing: shampoos, shower gels, hand soaps.

How to choose the right emollient?

For one child, it is better to apply several emollients of different types at the same time on different areas of the skin.

The choice of cosmetic product depends on:

  • from age. Some emollients cannot be used for babies. All packages of such cosmetics have age markings. There are products suitable for babies, for children from a year and older, as well as for adults;
  • from the affected area. It is better to use ointments or creams on the face. For the body – emulsions or lotions. When bathing, use bathing emulsions. When washing and hand washing, use liquid soap or shower gels with emollients.In case of dermatitis of the scalp, shampoos should be used, and then the skin should be treated with lotion or milk;
  • from changes in the skin. With severe dry skin, it is worth giving preference to ointments and creams. With a tendency to inflammation or wetness – lotions or milk;
  • from the season. So in hot weather it is worth giving preference to light textures – emulsions, milk, or lotions. Ointments should be used only during the cold season.

When, besides atopic dermatitis, should emollients be used?

  • Emollients can also be used on healthy skin, especially if the skin is exposed to traumatic factors.
  • Emollients are used for psoriasis and eczema in adults and older children.
  • For babies, emulsion or milk can be applied to soften the scabs on the scalp with syborrheic dermatitis. After bathing the baby, the head is treated with a cosmetic product, and then gently combed out with a soft brush. If necessary, this procedure can be repeated several times.

Online consultation of a Pediatrician

Online consultation

As part of the consultation, you will be able to voice your problem, the doctor will clarify the situation, decipher the analyzes, answer your questions and give the necessary recommendations.

Conclusion of a pediatrician

First, the changes on the skin should be shown to the doctor, cured with drugs, then the emollient should be selected.

More often than not, you will have to try several skin products before finding the one that works for your baby. It happens that an expensive emollient is less suitable than a cheaper one.
