Journey to the self. Journey to Self-Realization: Ancient Wisdom for Mind, Body, and Spirit
How can ancient Vedic wisdom guide us on our journey to self-realization. What insights do the Upanishads offer on the relationship between mind, body, and self. How can Ayurveda and meditation support holistic well-being and spiritual growth.
The Vedic Path to Self-Discovery
The ancient wisdom of the Vedas offers profound insights into the nature of human existence and the path to self-realization. This timeless knowledge, passed down through generations, provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the intricate relationships between mind, body, and spirit.
At its core, Vedic philosophy teaches that our true nature is beyond the limitations of the physical body and ever-changing mind. By embarking on a journey of self-discovery, we can uncover our innermost essence and experience profound peace, clarity, and fulfillment.
Key Principles of Vedic Wisdom
- The eternal nature of the Self (Atman)
- The interconnectedness of all beings
- The law of karma and reincarnation
- The path of dharma (righteous living)
- The ultimate goal of moksha (liberation)
Through study, contemplation, and practice of these ancient teachings, seekers can gain deep insights into the nature of reality and their own true Self.
Understanding the Mind-Body-Self Connection
A powerful analogy from the Katha Upanishad illuminates the complex interplay between mind, body, and Self:
आत्मानँ रथितं विद्धि शरीरँ रथमेव तु ।
बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रग्रहमेव च।
This verse compares the human experience to a chariot:
- The five horses represent the five senses
- The reins symbolize the mind
- The charioteer embodies the intellect
- The chariot itself represents the physical body
- The passenger in the back signifies the Self
This metaphor elegantly illustrates how our consciousness (the passenger) is influenced by the senses, mind, intellect, and body. To achieve self-realization, we must learn to skillfully guide these various aspects of our being.
Challenges on the Path
For many, the mind and senses run wild, leading to suffering and confusion. The intellect (charioteer) struggles to maintain control, resulting in a turbulent journey through life. Recognizing this common predicament is the first step toward positive change.
The Vedic Solution
Vedic wisdom teaches techniques to regain control over the mind and senses, allowing the intellect to guide us skillfully. Through practices like meditation, yoga, and self-inquiry, we can align our various aspects and progress toward self-realization.
Mastering the Mind: Ancient Techniques for Modern Challenges
In today’s fast-paced world, many of us struggle with mental and emotional challenges. Anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other issues seem increasingly common. While these problems may appear to stem from external sources, Vedic wisdom teaches that their root lies within our own minds.
Can ancient practices truly help us navigate modern mental health challenges? The answer is a resounding yes. Vedic techniques offer powerful tools for cultivating inner peace, emotional resilience, and mental clarity.
The Eight Limbs of Yoga
Maharshi Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras outline an eight-limbed path to self-realization. This comprehensive system provides a step-by-step approach to mastering the mind and realizing our true nature:
- Yama (ethical restraints)
- Niyama (observances)
- Asana (physical postures)
- Pranayama (breath control)
- Pratyahara (sensory withdrawal)
- Dharana (concentration)
- Dhyana (meditation)
- Samadhi (absorption in the Self)
While many associate yoga primarily with physical postures (asanas), the true goal of yoga is far more profound. As stated in the Bhagavad Gita, “Yoga is the equanimity of the mind.”
Benefits of Vedic Mental Practices
Regular practice of Vedic techniques can yield numerous benefits:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved emotional regulation
- Enhanced focus and concentration
- Greater self-awareness
- Increased sense of inner peace
- Improved sleep quality
- Heightened intuition and creativity
By incorporating these ancient practices into our daily lives, we can cultivate greater mental and emotional well-being, laying a strong foundation for spiritual growth.
Ayurveda: Holistic Healing for Body and Mind
Just as a well-maintained chariot is essential for a smooth journey, a healthy body is crucial for spiritual progress. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a comprehensive approach to physical and mental health.
What makes Ayurveda unique among healing traditions? Its holistic perspective recognizes the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit, tailoring treatments to each individual’s unique constitution.
Key Principles of Ayurveda
- The three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha
- The importance of balance in all aspects of life
- The role of diet, lifestyle, and natural remedies in maintaining health
- The connection between physical health and mental well-being
- The emphasis on prevention and whole-person care
By understanding our unique constitution and following Ayurvedic principles, we can optimize our physical health, support mental clarity, and create a strong foundation for spiritual growth.
Ayurvedic Practices for Daily Wellness
Incorporating simple Ayurvedic practices into our daily routine can yield significant benefits:
- Dinacharya (daily routine aligned with natural rhythms)
- Abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil)
- Tongue scraping for oral hygiene
- Neti pot for nasal cleansing
- Eating mindfully and according to one’s dosha
- Herbal teas and spices to support digestion and immunity
These practices not only promote physical health but also create a sense of ritual and mindfulness that supports overall well-being and spiritual growth.
The Interplay of Ayurveda and Yoga
While Ayurveda focuses on physical health and Yoga emphasizes mental and spiritual development, these two sister sciences are deeply interconnected. How do Ayurveda and Yoga complement each other on the path to self-realization?
Synergies Between Ayurveda and Yoga
- Both recognize the mind-body connection
- Ayurvedic principles can inform yoga practice (e.g., choosing asanas based on dosha)
- Yoga supports Ayurvedic goals of balance and harmony
- Both emphasize the importance of proper breathing
- Meditation is central to both traditions
By integrating Ayurvedic wisdom with yogic practices, we can create a holistic approach to health and spirituality that addresses all aspects of our being.
The Path to Self-Realization
Self-realization, the ultimate goal of human existence according to Vedic philosophy, is the direct experience of our true nature beyond body and mind. This profound state of awareness brings lasting peace, joy, and fulfillment.
What steps can we take to progress toward self-realization? While the journey is unique for each individual, certain practices and principles can guide us along the way:
Key Practices for Self-Realization
- Regular meditation and self-inquiry
- Study of sacred texts (svadhyaya)
- Devotional practices (bhakti yoga)
- Selfless service (karma yoga)
- Cultivating dispassion (vairagya)
- Association with enlightened beings (satsang)
As we progress on this path, we gradually shed our limited identifications and uncover the boundless, blissful nature of our true Self.
Stages of Spiritual Awakening
The journey to self-realization often unfolds in stages:
- Initial curiosity and seeking
- Intellectual understanding of spiritual concepts
- Regular spiritual practice and lifestyle changes
- Deepening experiences of peace and clarity
- Glimpses of non-dual awareness
- Stabilization in self-realization
While these stages can serve as guideposts, it’s important to remember that spiritual growth is rarely linear. Patience, persistence, and humility are essential qualities on this transformative journey.
Building a Global Community of Seekers
The journey to self-realization, while deeply personal, need not be solitary. Creating a supportive community of like-minded individuals can greatly enhance our spiritual growth and understanding.
How can we foster a global community dedicated to self-discovery and ancient wisdom? Here are some key elements:
Elements of a Thriving Spiritual Community
- Regular group meditation and study sessions
- Online platforms for sharing insights and experiences
- Retreats and workshops led by experienced teachers
- Volunteer opportunities for seva (selfless service)
- Support groups for navigating spiritual challenges
- Cross-cultural exchanges to broaden perspectives
By coming together in the spirit of mutual support and shared aspiration, we can create a powerful collective energy that uplifts and inspires all participants.
The Role of Technology in Spiritual Growth
While ancient wisdom forms the foundation of our journey, modern technology can play a valuable role in disseminating knowledge and connecting seekers worldwide. Online courses, virtual satsangs, and meditation apps can complement traditional practices, making spiritual teachings more accessible than ever before.
As we harness these tools, it’s important to maintain a balance, ensuring that our digital engagement supports rather than detracts from our inner work.
Integrating Ancient Wisdom into Modern Life
The profound teachings of the Vedas may seem far removed from our busy modern lives. Yet, their timeless wisdom remains as relevant today as ever. How can we bridge the gap between ancient knowledge and contemporary challenges?
Practical Applications of Vedic Wisdom
- Mindfulness practices for stress reduction in the workplace
- Ayurvedic principles for balanced nutrition and self-care
- Yogic techniques for improving focus and creativity
- Vedic conflict resolution strategies for healthier relationships
- Meditation for enhanced decision-making and leadership
By creatively adapting these ancient teachings to our modern context, we can experience their transformative power in all areas of life.
Overcoming Common Obstacles
Integrating spiritual practices into a busy lifestyle can be challenging. Common obstacles include:
- Lack of time
- Inconsistency in practice
- Skepticism from friends or family
- Difficulty maintaining motivation
- Confusion about conflicting spiritual teachings
Acknowledging these challenges and developing strategies to overcome them is an important part of the spiritual journey. Seeking guidance from experienced practitioners, joining supportive communities, and maintaining a curious, open-minded attitude can help us navigate these obstacles with grace.
As we continue to explore and apply the wisdom of the Vedas in our daily lives, we embark on a profound journey of self-discovery. This path leads not only to personal transformation but also to a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness with all of life. By realizing our true nature, we contribute to the healing and evolution of the entire world.

Understanding the Relationship between Mind, Body, and Self
आत्मानँ रथितं विद्धि शरीरँ रथमेव तु ।
बुद्धिं तु सारथिं विद्धि मनः प्रग्रहमेव च।
— १.३.३ ॥ Katha Upanishad
This photo helps us understand the relationship between mind, body, and Self.
The five horses represent the five senses, each having their own vast field (full of sense objects) to graze.
The reins attached to the horses represent the mind.
The charioteer represents the intellect.
The chariot represents the body.
The passenger in the back represents the self.
The self goes everywhere where the mind goes and experiences everything that the mind experiences; either pleasure or pain.
The Problem:
Ideally, the charioteer should control the reins and thus the horses but for most people the reins and the horses are not controlled by the charioteer.
The Solution:
To have the charioteer take control of the reins, and steer the horses in the right direction.
“Controlling the reins”
All our modern problems (health, work, family, relationships etc.) might seem to arise from different places but they’re actually all stemming from our minds with their root residing in desires. A severe heartbreak made me think that my emotional suffering was triggered by outside sources but actually it was experienced within me and therefore, the cure must be within me as well. To find the cure I turned to an ancient scripture called Bhagavad Gita and the first thing I learned was all of these sufferings are created and experienced by the mind – and I am not my mind. It’s the mind that experiences the pain, I suffer because I am with the mind. Therefore, an obvious solution was to learn how to separate myself from the mind.
The most ancient scripture that teaches how to separate oneself from the mind is called Vedas (Sanskrit for knowledge). The Vedas offer step-by-step knowledge and practices that every human can learn to cure the problems from the root and live a happy and peaceful life.
A great sage named Maharshi Patanjali provided the world an eight limb Yoga system also known as Yoga sutras for one to follow and attain Self-realization. In this ancient philosophy of Yoga each limb is dedicated to help one prepare for the next step in the journey to the Self. Now millions of people worldwide are practicing asanas (postures), the third limb in the Yoga system and some know Yoga to be limited to the asanas practice. Whereas the definition of Yoga says, it is the controlling the fluctuations of the consciousness. Another definition from Bhagavad Gita says Yoga is the equanimity of the mind.
Here you will learn what, why, and how of each limb of this ancient Yoga philosophy which will help you go beyond the asanas, control the mind, and realize your Self.
These techniques will also help you manage and cure emotional and mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, anger, lust, greed, insecurity, fear.
And we would love to share that with you.
Master Your Mind
“Fixing the chariot”
The passenger cannot go anywhere in a broken chariot (i.e.: the body)
I fixed my chariot with the help of Ayurveda (Sanskrit for science of life).
Ayurveda
In Sanskrit Ayush “Life” Vid “Wisdom”
Ayurveda is the most ancient medical system. This ancient Vedic tradition was practiced by great Indian seers, they offered wealth of knowledge to stay healthy and live a meaningful life.
The philosophy of Ayurveda:
The universe is composed of Five Elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth) called Panchbhootas and constitute Three Doshas (bio-energetic forces Vata, Pita, and Kapa) which determines our physical constitution and governs our overall health.
The Three psychic forces called Trigunas (Satva, Rajas, and Tamas) determine our mental and spiritual health.
Ayurveda teaches us how to balance five elements, three doshas, and three gunas to live a healthy, happy, and serene life.
My family and I trusted 5th generation Ayurvedic vaidyas (Sanskrit for a doctor) from India with repairing my heart and saving my mother from dying of schizophrenia.
Now we’re both off of our medications and living a healthy life.
These vaidyas have gone through a rigorous five-year degree program that integrates Ayurveda with allopathy (western medicine) to make sure they understand and can speak clearly and accessibly to everyone in order to cure and heal them.
I would love to connect you with the right Vaidya to help with your chariot.
Heal Your Body
“Controlling the chariot and the charioteer”
Why do we all read books and listen to podcasts on Self Help, Self Love, Self Improvement, Self awareness – basically everything with Self as a prefix?
The answer is peace and happiness.
The horses (senses) are looking for peace and happiness in the five element world outside and thus keep the reins (mind) pulled towards the five fields full of sense-objects. The truth is that the Self already has the happiness and peace within – which just needs to be realized, as explained in the ancient scriptures.
Self:
The purpose of human life is to be free from all sufferings.
The cycle of birth and death is the root cause of all sufferings.
This cycle can only be broken through Self-realization.
The most ancient source of knowledge that teaches us how to get Self-realized is Veda.
This knowledge is for everyone regardless of race, country, origin, religious and spiritual beliefs.
Note:
This Self is not to be confused with the self which is essentially the ego/sense of I, me, mine called Ahankar in Sanskrit.
The Self is beyond name, form, gender, or any properties and thus can not be experienced by any of the 14 senses including mind and intellect.
Senses, mind, intellect are all lower forms of the Self, when all of them are gone what remains is the true Self.
Realize Your Self
Everyone with a human body can practice and attain Self-realization.

About – Journey to the Self
Santmat
The teachings of these enlightened saints are collectively referred to as Santmat (Saints’ agreement) where there is no discrimination between humans based on race, caste, faith, origin, religion, country etc.
Santmat teaches every human is equal no matter he/she/they is Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Parasi etc. Human religion is one religion. The creator did not create Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, or Christian- the creator created a human. The same human followed different different religions based on the family, society, and country they were born and raised in. All human beings are same and equal. We are the children of the same creator. And Santmat teaches the path to unite with the creator.
Maharshi Mehi (Guru Maharaj)
Maharshi Mehi (Mehi means subtle) was born on April 28,1885 in a small town in Bihar, India with seven dreadlocks, every time his mother tried to undo the locks it would go back to its natural state – one of the early signs of Mehi being a born sage.
From a young age he spent a lot of time in solitude studying ancient Indian scriptures and learning different languages including English, Urdu, Persian. At the age of 19 when asked to quote and explain the poem ‘Builders’ for his high school English paper, while explaining the lines below he got overwhelmed with such a strong surge of emotion of renunciation that he stood up and asked the teacher “ May I go out, Sir?” And that was his final adieu to formal education…

Pandit Balmiki Sharma grew up in Bihar, India studying ancient Vedic science about the mind, meditation, and Self from Self-realized saints and scriptures such as Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Geeta, Dhammapada, Guru Granth Sahib, Bible.
He has a Ph.D. in Indian classical music and a Masters in Hindi literature with a focus on religious studies. Buddha wasn’t born enlightened or self-realized, neither were Jesus, Yogananda, and Maharshi Mehi – they all had to learn from someone how or why to sit erect and cross-legged; the first step of Dhyana yoga (meditation). That “someone” had to learn the same things from someone and the first someone learnt that from Vedas, the source…

I stepped out in the balcony and I looked up to the sky which was filled with stars and a mild breeze around me. It was so pleasant out that it made me close my yes and sit on the floor.
I experienced astral projection which was so profound and scary at the time so I opened my eyes very quickly. Upon opening my eyes I was shocked and confused after astral projection because the sun was up and I had no clue how the time had passed so fast…
