A side effect that has changed the lives of millions of men
One of the main conditions for a harmonious and long relationship between a man and a woman is the physical and sexual health of the partner. However, daily troubles, conflicts at work, stressful situations, the desire to succeed in life sometimes affect both the physical and sexual well-being of the stronger sex. And now, to unpleasant situations at work and daily stresses, problems in the intimate sphere gradually begin to be added, which sometimes fall on the heads of men with a diagnosis of “erectile dysfunction”. In this context, it should be remembered that the problem of erectile dysfunction can be eliminated with the help of modern effective drugs with a favorable safety profile.
The term “erectile dysfunction” was proposed in 1988 by the US National Institutes of Health (National Institutes of Health) and replaced the outdated concept of “impotence”. Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. In the structure of sexual disorders, this pathology occupies a leading place in terms of frequency of occurrence and social significance [1, 2].
A NEW ERA IN THE TREATMENT OF ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION
A revolutionary event in the field of erectile dysfunction treatment was the appearance in 1998 of the drug sildenafil citrate, known under the trade name Viagra ® .
- Viagra® is known worldwide for its side effects. The results of clinical studies of sildenafil conducted in 1992 with the participation of several thousand patients with coronary heart disease disappointed the developers of the drug Viagra P. Dunn and A. Wood, however, its side effect, which was reported by many participants in the study, namely: a pronounced effect on blood flow in the area of the pelvic organs (including the penis), prompted the idea of using this drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction ;
- later, sildenafil also showed efficacy in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension ;
- in 1998. Viagra ® was mentioned in connection with the award of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine ;
- Viagra ® was awarded the Galen Prize in 1999 in the Netherlands, in 2000 in France and Great Britain, and in 2001 in Canada .
- in 2001, Pfizer was awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise (UK) for the discovery and development of Viagra ® ;
- in 2003, Viagra ® won the nomination “The brightest brand of the Ukrainian pharmaceutical market” .
Sildenafil is a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), in cavernous bodies, where PDE5 is responsible for the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Blockade of this enzyme leads to the accumulation of cGMP, which causes relaxation of smooth myocytes, providing an erection.
Sildenafil is the gold standard in the treatment of erectile dysfunction today. This is primarily due to its high efficiency, as well as to the oral non-invasive form of sildenafil .
It should be noted that the effect of the drug, that is, the onset of an erection, begins 14-20 minutes after taking it , and the duration of action of Viagra® 100 mg in most men is 12 hours . Viagra® remains effective even 4 years after the start of regular intake, so, more than 94% of patients who participated in the clinical study of the effectiveness of Viagra®, after 4 years of regular use, noted that they were satisfied with the result of treatment and significantly increased the level of sexual activity [13 ]. With Viagra®, men can have sex more often and longer. Viagra® 100 mg increases the duration of erection in men with erectile dysfunction without changing the characteristics of sperm, and has a positive effect on the resumption of erection after ejaculation in the presence of continuous sexual arousal . It should be noted that Viagra ® has a favorable safety profile. Thus, the incidence of acute cardiovascular diseases in patients with erectile dysfunction who took Viagra ® does not exceed that in the general population .
Viagra ® — do not forget about physical pleasure!
Representative office of Pfizer has developed an educational website for Ukrainian consumers, which is dedicated to the problem of erectile dysfunction — top-result.com.ua . On the site you can get information on possible problems with erection and ways to solve it.

The doctor spoke about the side effects of dexamethasone
June 17, 2020, 14:42
MOSCOW, June 17. /TASS/. The anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone, which has been shown to be effective in the complications of COVID-19, has side effects such as increased susceptibility to thrombosis and the ability to cause stomach ulcers. Therefore, only specialists should appoint it. Honored Doctor of Russia Mikhail Kagan told TASS about this.
The steroid dexamethasone has been called an effective remedy against severe forms of COVID-19
Dexamethasone is a steroid drug with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It is used to treat rheumatoid diseases, asthma, allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and many other diseases. According to the results of the RECOVERY clinical trial, which involved more than 6 thousand patients with coronavirus infection, dexamethasone reduced the mortality of patients with COVID-19 by a thirdwho were on artificial lung ventilation.
After that, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) called these results a “scientific breakthrough”. However, the study has not yet been independently peer reviewed and has not been published in any scientific journal. The authors promise to do it in the near future.
Why dexamethasone should be taken with caution
“[Side effects] are the same as other drugs in this group – increased tendency to thrombosis, increased blood pressure, increased blood glucose levels, the ability to cause stomach ulcers, and so on. This is a serious drug , for serious situations with serious side effects, so only an experienced doctor will understand what’s what, Kagan said. 0003
The doctor explained that the drug, according to preliminary results of the study, does not affect the virus itself, it only reduces the excessive inflammation that occurs in the body after infection.
As a prophylaxis and in the first week after infection with coronavirus, Kagan did not recommend using this drug, as it suppresses the immune system. “It can only help the virus,” the doctor explained.
In general, as Kagan explained, dexamethasone has been known to mankind since 1960s and has long been registered for the treatment of autoimmune diseases in all countries, including the USSR and Russia. Corticosteroids are the basis of traditional therapy for many autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, glomerulonephritis, bronchial asthma, Kawasaki syndrome, autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura, and others.
The use of corticosteroids for coronavirus infection is logical, the doctor noted, but there were no unambiguous recommendations, since there was no evidence of the effectiveness of this drug against COVID-19 before. In addition, doctors are aware of the risks of using such steroids. At the same time, in the seventh version of the interim guidelines of the Ministry of Health “Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a new coronavirus infection” dated June 3, there was a recommendation that this drug can be used in severe cases of the disease, Kagan noted.
“It should be noted that in the UK, the dose of dexamethasone used was significantly lower than recommended by our Ministry of Health – 6 mg per day (in domestic recommendations – 20 mg per day. I think that the British managed to find the optimal dose that already provides a positive effect and minimizes side effects,” the doctor concluded.
How the clinical trials were conducted
The RECOVERY study, which began in March 2020, included more than 6,400 patients with coronavirus infection. Of these, 2.1 thousand people were randomly selected, who were given 6 mg of dexamethasone per day for ten days. The rest of the participants received the usual treatment in such cases.
