Two Daily Servings of Dairy Helps Reduce Risk for Heart Disease

Consuming at least two servings of dairy products a day is associated with lower risk for heart disease, stroke and death, based on results of a global study of more than 136,000 adults from 21 countries.

Published in the European Heart Journal, this study looked at the impact of dairy consumption on heart health. It included 136,384 adults, all of who completed food questionnaires and were followed for an average of nine years.

The goal was to see how consumption of dairy products, including milk, cheese and yogurt, impacted health and survival.

Overall, there were a total of 6,796 deaths and 5,855 heart events over the study period. Analysis showed that adults consuming two or more servings of dairy each day had 22% lower risk for heart disease, 34% lower risk for stroke and 23% lower risk for heart-related death than adults with no dairy consumption. Two daily servings of dairy was also associated with lower risk for heart attack, although findings were not considered statistically significant.

When researchers looked at specific types of dairy products, they found that one serving of milk a day was associated with 10% lower risk of heart events and heart-related death compared to individuals with no milk intake. Similarly, one daily serving of yogurt a day was associated with 14% lower risk of heart events and heart-related death compared to individuals who never consumed yogurt.

One daily serving of cheese was associated with lower heart risk, while daily consumption of butter was associated with slightly increased risk. However, neither of these associations was considered statistically significant.

What findings show, according to authors, is that consumption of dairy products should be encouraged, regardless of their fat content. Current guidelines recommend at least three servings of dairy a day, as dairy contains vital nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. However, guidelines also discourage consumption of whole-fat dairy products, which contain saturated fats that can raise bad cholesterol.

The problem, according to experts, is that discouraging certain types of dairy may lead to lower overall dairy intake. It’s estimated that 80% of Americans don’t get enough dairy in their diets as it is, with rates even lower in low and middle-income countries.

For this reason, authors highlight the need to increase consumption of dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese, regardless of their fat content. After all, even whole-fat dairy products will contain far more nutrients than processed or sugar-rich foods. 

However, it’s important to note that findings were from an observational study, which is not designed to prove cause and effect. Dietary surveys were also self-reported, which is not always accurate and changes over time. So while findings support the health benefits of all types of dairy, current guidelines still recommend choosing non- or low-fat dairy when possible as part of a heart-healthy diet.

Low-Fat Milk Doesn’t Hurt Heart

May 23, 2005 — Drinking low-fat or nonfat milk does not increase a person’s risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke, and it may even be slightly protective, a new study suggests.

Researchers in the U.K. found that middle-aged men who drank the most milk had the same rate of heart attacks, strokes, and deaths from all causes as men who drank the least over two decades of observation.

Drinking more than 7 ounces of milk a day was associated with a 10% decrease in heart attack risk compared with drinking less milk. But researcher Andy Ness, MD, says it is not clear if this protective effect is real.

“We found no evidence that drinking modest amounts of milk as part of a balanced diet had any detrimental effect on health,” he tells WebMD. “But I would not encourage people to drink large quantities of milk based on this study to decrease their cardiovascular risk. That would be the wrong message.”

Evidence Shows Little Risk Antimilk groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals contend that dairy consumption is a major cause of heart attacks and strokes in

the U.S. An essay entitled “Got Heart Disease?” found on the group’s web site charges that “study after study has implicated cow’s milk and other dairy products as a cause of heart disease and clogged arteries.

But the clinical evidence shows little or no association between low-fat and nonfat dairy consumption and cardiovascular risk, American Heart Association spokesman Gerald Fletcher, MD, tells WebMD. Fletcher directs the preventive cardiology program at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.

An analysis of 10 studies examining milk consumption and heart attacks and strokes, published by Ness and colleagues last year, showed no evidence of increased cardiovascular risk in milk drinkers. Like their own research, the studies suggested that drinking milk may be associated with a small reduction in heart disease and stroke risk. But the finding was not conclusive.

“Certainly high-fat dairy products can be a problem in terms of raising cholesterol levels,” he says. “But low-fat dairy doesn’t seem to have much impact one way or the other.”

Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Milk

The new study included 665 men between the ages of 45 and 59 recruited for an ongoing nutrition and health study between 1979 and 1983. Just after recruitment the men were asked to weigh and record everything they ate or drank for one week. They were then followed for evidence of heart disease for the next 20 years, during which time 54 of the men had strokes, 139 developed heart disease, and 225 died.

Most of the men drank whole milk when they entered the study, but almost all had switched to skim or low fat two decades later.

Men who drank the most milk (a pint or more) and the least milk (less than half a pint) had similar blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Men who drank the most milk also consumed the most calories, while men who drank the least milk drank the most alcohol.

Death rates from all causes were similar in both groups. Men who drank the most milk had a lower risk of stroke caused by blood clots than those who drank the least. They also tended to have a slightly lower risk of heart attack than those who drank less.

The study is published in the latest issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

3 Servings a Day

Government nutrition guidelines were recently changed to recommend that adults eat three servings of nonfat or low-fat dairy products a day instead of two. And the American Heart Association and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute recommend nonfat or low-fat dairy products as part of a healthy diet.

National Dairy Council spokeswoman Teresa Wagner says recent studies suggest that milk consumption improves blood pressure and insulin resistance — a marker of heart disease and a risk for developing diabetes. Just two weeks ago nutrition researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health reported that drinking milk helps protect against type 2 diabetes.

“I think people now realize that low-fat and fat-free dairy products can provide a lot of health benefits,” she tells WebMD. “They recognize the unique nutrient package of dairy foods, which includes not only calcium but eight other essential vitamins and minerals that may play a role in other aspects of health besides just bones.

Researchers from the University of Reading, University of South Australia, and University of Auckland looked at data from nearly two million adults in the UK.

The researchers used genetics to help identify habitual milk drinkers — they found that people with a genetic variation that helps digest lactose were more likely to drink milk. Combined with surveys about milk consumption, the researchers used this information to assess how drinking milk might be linked to health outcomes, such as risk of disease.

They found that milk drinkers tend to have a higher body mass index, but lower levels of both good and bad cholesterol, and 14% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Milk’s high fat content may be digested differently, based on an ‘unknown milk factor’

Previous research suggests that saturated fat may be linked to a higher risk of heart disease. But milk, which is high in saturated fat, doesn’t appear to be linked to health risks in the same way that other fatty foods, such as red meat, are. 

These findings suggest that a heart-healthy diet can include milk, according to Vimal Karani, lead author of the study and professor of nutrigenetics at the University of Reading.  

“The study certainly shows that milk consumption is not a significant issue for cardiovascular disease risk even though there was a small rise in [body mass index] and body fat among milk drinkers,” Karani said in a press release. “What we do note in the study is that it remains unclear whether it is the fat content in dairy products that is contributing to the lower cholesterol levels or it is due to an unknown ‘milk factor.'”

One explanation might be that the high calcium and lactose content of milk could change how fats are metabolized in the body, the researchers suggested. It could also be that milk drinking affects bacteria that live in the gut, altering how cholesterol is processed. More research is needed to better understand how exactly milk plays a role in disease risk. 

For now, experts say that milk and dairy products can be part of a healthy diet, since they also include important nutrients like protein and calcium.

A new study published on May 24 in the International Journal of Obesity found that drinking milk on a daily basis is very good for your heart. The researchers behind the new report—which consisted of a team from the University of Reading, University of South Australia, Southern Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, University College London, and University of Auckland—observed nearly two million participants from the U.K. and U.S. through other large population studies and singled out people who consumed higher levels of milk. They found that regular milk drinkers who gulped down at least one glass of milk a day had a 14 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease.

Milk has often been criticized for its high levels of dietary cholesterol—and, according to the Mayo Clinic, high levels of cholesterol in your blood can increase your risk of heart disease. A 2018 landmark study published in the journal The Lancet looked at data from 136,000 adults from 21 countries for more than nine years and found that dairy consumption overall was good for your heart health. According to the study, more than two servings of dairy per day was associated with a 22 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to no dairy consumption. For example, eating more than one serving of yogurt each day was linked to a 10 percent lower risk of heart disease compared to no yogurt consumption.

Currently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that adults have three servings of dairy per day. That’s equivalent to about three cups of milk, and ideally, you should consume fat-free or low-fat varieties, which provide key nutrients without the added fat.

However, if you’re lactose intolerant or choose not to consume dairy, the USDA says to fill your diet with “foods that provide the range of nutrients generally obtained from dairy, including protein, calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin A.”

Heart attack: Milk may reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attacks

The leading cause of heart attacks is coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease is a condition in which the major blood vessels supplying the heart get clogged up with deposits of cholesterol. Before a heart attack occurs, one of the deposits of cholesterol bursts, causing a blood clot to develop. The blood clot may then block the supply of blood to the heart, triggering a heart attack.

According to experts in Waitrose’s magazine Health New Year 2019: 365 Steps to a Healthier, Fitter and Happier Year, milk may help to lower the risk of having heart problems.

This follows a recent study which found people eating more than two 244g servings of whole-fat dairy a day reduced their heart risk, said Waitrose.

This included dairy coming from milk and yoghurt, rather than cheese and cream.

Eating dairy in moderation is “key”, however, with UK guidelines suggesting eating two to three portions of reduced-fat dairy a day.

It’s important to eat dairy in moderation, as much of the fat found in the products is saturated, which can actually increase the risk of heart attacks.

This is because a diet high in saturated fat can lead to raised levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance vital for the normal functioning of the body, but having excessively high amounts in the blood can cause serious health problems.

There are two types of cholesterol, known as ‘good’ or HDL cholesterol and ‘bad’ or LDL cholesterol.

HDL carries cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver, where it’s either broken down or passed out of the body as a waste product. The higher the levels of HDL, the better.

LDL carries cholesterol to the cells that need it, but if there’s too much cholesterol for the cells to use, it can build up in the artery walls, causing heart disease.

High cholesterol can be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, particularly one which is high in saturated fat.

Saturated fat is found in foods including butter, cakes, biscuits, fatty cuts of meat, sausages, bacon, cheese, pastries, cream, chocolate and ice cream.

UK guidelines recommend men aged between 19 and 64 eat no more than 30g of saturated fat per day.

Women in the same age bracket are advised to eat no more than 20g of saturated fat per day.

“Milk and dairy products, such as cheese and yoghurt, are great sources of protein and calcium. They can form part of a healthy, balanced diet,” said the NHS.

“The total fat content of dairy products can vary a lot. To make healthier choices, look at the nutrition information on the label to check the amount of fat, including saturated fat, salt and sugar, in the dairy products you’re choosing.

Calcium, Vitamin D and A

Choose plant-based milks that are fortified with calcium, vitamin D and A. Most plant milks that are enriched with calcium surpass the content of dairy milk with up to 45 % of the daily recommended value, and also contain vitamin D to enhance absorption. Depending on the brand, plant milks can also be enriched with vitamin E, B12 and iron, making them a good source for these nutrients which are often lacking on a plant-based diet.

Non-GMO with Minimal Additives and Oils

As with all packaged foods, it is important to read labels and look for plant milks verified as non-GMO with minimal additives and added oils. Below is a list of plant-based milks that contain ≤ 3 grams of fat per 8 ounce serving, and are therefore approved as a low-fat option for the Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease. They all fall within Group 1 of the Ornish Spectrum. The only exception is coconut milk due to its high concentration in saturated fat.

Soy Milk

Soaking, crushing and cooking soybeans to extract the liquid produces soy milk. It is a nutrient-dense option that trumps other plant-based milks with eight grams of protein per cup. Research shows that protein has been shown to provide cardiovascular benefits. The nutrition guidelines for Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease recommends one serving of soy protein a day, including soy milk, because it provides a good replacement for animal protein in addition to its heart-health benefits. Almond milk is often a popular choice because it is lower in calories due to the primary ingredient being filtered water. At the same time, it lacks nutrient density and protein. A typical cup of almond milk only has one gram of protein, however, some almond milk brands have boosted the protein content up to five grams by adding other plant proteins such as rice and pea protein.

Flax Milk

An emerging plant milk that provides a source of omega-3 fatty acids with no saturated fat or cholesterol. Since the original milk is void of protein, some brands offer a flax plus protein milk that supplies up to five grams of protein per eight ounce serving.

Coconut Milk

This trendy option has exploded in the marketplace. Marketers tout its health benefits, but limited research has been done on it. Coconut milk has three times the saturated fat as cow’s milk and ranges between 90-500 calories per serving depending on whether or not it’s watered down. Coconut milk is not included in Ornish Spectrum Group 1 or on Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease.
