Warts are one of the most common – and troublesome – skin conditions in childhood.

A common infection caused by a virus, warts can turn up anywhere on the body, but for most children, warts are most commonly found on the hands and feet.

While many warts will eventually disappear on their own after being reabsorbed by the body, they can bleed when knocked and cause the sufferer some pain and embarrassment.

Other warts simply won’t leave on their own in most cases, so it is generally recommended by health professionals to take some type of action towards wart removal to avoid cross-infection and the possible spread of warts to other parts of the body.

Wart removal products

With warts being so prevalent in the community, it’s no surprise that there are many wart removal products available and methods around. However, what may work well for one wart may have no impact on another, so it pays to be prepared to try a range of methods when aggressively tackling a wart problem head-on.

The most common methods of wart removal include:

• AT-HOME APPLICATION OF SALICYLIC ACID – most of the wart removers sold in chemists use salicylic acid to burn the wart off.
• CHRYOTHERAPY – this involves a health professional freezing the wart off, usually with liquid nitrogen.
• CANTHARADIN – this is the juice of a blister beetle that is painted on by your doctor and left to form a blister over 24 hours. The dead skin of the wart is later removed by the doctor.

Frustratingly, some warts don’t respond to any of the OTC wart removal products at all. But before you consult a dermatologist, or other specialist, consider trying one of the old-fashioned home remedies for wart removal that so many sufferers swear by. Like all wart removers, you may have to try a couple before you find the perfect remedy that works for each wart.

Home remedies for warts

Of course, there are other more unusual DIY methods some people swear by, which can be done easily at home. Here are a few others we found: 

• Cut a potato in half and rub the wart firmly with the potato half, making sure that the skin becomes saturated with raw potato juice. Repeat morning and night for two weeks to start seeing results.
• Soak a cotton wool ball in apple cider vinegar and apply directly to the wart. Use a bandaid to fix the cotton ball to the wart. Remove after three to four hours. Repeat every day for three days to start seeing results.
• Place a small square of duct tape over the wart and leave in place, removing only when you want to replace the tape. Continue for two weeks to start seeing results.
• Rub the wart with the peel of an orange. The wart will turn orange and then darken and finally drop off. Continue for two weeks to start seeing results.
• Paint the wart with a layer of clear nail polish. Repeat every second day. Continue for two weeks to start seeing a result.

• Soak a cotton ball in fresh aloe vera and apply directly to the wart. Repeat each day for two weeks to begin seeing a result.
• Rub a raw garlic over the wart every day for two weeks to begin seeing a result.
• For plantar warts, apply the inside of a banana peel to the wart. The peel must remain in contact with the wart at all times. Continue for 3 – 4 days to see a result.
• Apply the milk of a dandelion directly to the wart. Repeat every day for two weeks to begin seeing a result.
• Rub castor oil onto the wart twice a day for two weeks to begin seeing a result.

Surprisingly, the duct tape cure remedy is the only remedy to have been medically researched and proven to work.

The most popular – and anecdotally successful – home remedy is the apple cider vinegar remedy, which apparently work to redress the skin’s pH balance and thus eliminate the wart.

Don’t confuse warts with Molluscum Contagiosum an illness where a wart-like rash can pop up. And here are other childhood skin conditions you need to know about. 

Vitamin cures

It’s not just foods (and duct tape) that work a miracle wart cure. Some vitamins reportedly work miracles too:

• Before going to bed, prick open a vitamin E capsule and carefully cover the wart with the oil. Cover the treated area with a band-aid, sock or glove and leave the oil on overnight. Repeat for two weeks to start seeing results.
• Break a vitamin C tablet down to a similar size as the wart you are treating. Using a bandaid to keep it in place, tape the vitamin C tablet directly onto the wart. Change the bandaid and vitamin C tablet each day and repeat for two weeks to start seeing results.

Additionally, when you have warts you should eat a diet rich in vitamin A – the orange foods such as pumpkin, carrots, papaya, mangos and apricots – and garlic to boost your immune system.

2. Aloe vera

The results of using aloe vera for skin are too good to be true. Packed with malic acid, aloe vera is extremely useful in treating warts. In fact, if your warts are itchy or painful, the antibacterial and antibiotic properties of aloe vera may provide relief.

3. Tea tree oil

Treatment

Your pediatrician can give you advice on treating warts. Sometimes he will recommend an over-the-counter medication that contains salicylic acid or even treat them in the office using a liquid nitrogen–based solution or spray. If any of the following are present, he may refer you to a dermatologist.

• Multiple, recurring warts

• A wart on the face or genital area

• Large, deep, or painful plantar warts (warts on the soles of the feet)

• Warts that are particularly bothersome to your child

Some warts will just go away by themselves. Others can be removed using prescription or nonprescription preparations. However, surgical removal by scraping, cauterizing, or freezing is sometimes necessary with multiple warts, those that continue to recur, or deep plantar warts. 13. Milkweed (the liquid inside of the stem) Topical application of milkweed juice is a time-honored wart remedy. Many others have also reported success with this native plant.
14. Crushed basil leaves. Basil is enriched with elements of antibacterial and antiviral property. Applying basil leaves on the warts can gradually shrink the warts eventually getting rid of it. This is one of the natural ways for removing warts. Crush few leaves of fresh basil and rub them on the warts. You can also apply the crushed leaves over the warts and cover it with a tape. After few days you can find the warts would flake off giving way for new layer of skin.
15. Banana (scrapings from the inside of the peel) Getting rid of warts has become easier than you think by using banana peel. A small of this peel can be placed over the wart and covered with duct tape. Leave it for few hours. Lemon peel can also be used for covering the warts.
16. Dandelion milk (the liquid inside of the stem) Break open the stem of a dandelion flower and dab on the white milk from it. Cover with a bandaid to keep it on. Repeat in the evening, then again each morning and night until it’s gone.
17. Papaya contains an enzyme that digests dead tissue. Make shallow cuts on the surface of an unripe papaya, collect the sap that runs out and let it coagulate. Mix the thickened sap with water, and then apply morning and night.
18. Raw potato. Here doesn’t seem to be a set reason why, but one of the most common natural remedies for warts you will hear about is rubbing a potato on it. There’s not a whole lot of scientific backing to this theory, but over the centuries people have stuck to it and have found success. It’s worth a shot! An interesting part of the original historical remedy is to bury the potato after use and when you dig it up 2 weeks later it will have a wart on it (and yours will be gone.) That is very much optional.
19. Onion. is dry and hot in nature. Apply onion juice on warts and leave it on overnight. Do this treatment regularly for at least 15 days. The wart will dry out and fall on its own.
20. Castor oil. Castor oil has excellent anti-inflammatory property and you can apply few drops of castor oil over the warts. Castor oil does have a very repulsive smell. You can make this treatment a little easier on your nose by mixing castor oil with a bit of peppermint oil. Alternatively you can also use vitamin E oil also. Soak a cotton ball in castor oil and place it on the warts and cover it with a tape. Leave it overnight. By repeating this simple remedy for a week the warts are gone forever.
21. Carrot and olive oil paste.
22. Baking soda mixed with vinegar.
23. Urine (grandmothers cure).

24. Duct Tape. There is a certain amount of scientific evidence to support the use of Duct Tape in the treatment of verrucas and warts. A suitable size piece of duct tape is placed over the wart or verruca for around 6 days. [If the tape should fall off, simply replace it with a fresh piece.] Following the 6th day of treatment, immerse the wart or verruca in water. Repeat the process, ensuring around 2 months of continual treatment.
25. A treatment to consider, especially with children, is faith. My friend Helen told me her father rubbed a coin on her verrucas and told her they would disappear. It worked. Stories abound on the Internet of children being told any number of cures that worked, such as colouring the verrucas. Belief in the cure caused the result. Children are highly suggestible. It’s worth a try.
26. Birch bark. Dampen a piece of birch bark with water and tape it over your wart with the inner side of the bark facing your skin. The bark contains salicylates, which are found in many over-the-counter wart treatments.

Apple Cider Vinegar. For this simple procedure, the removal of warts using apple cider vinegar requires just 3 things: Apple Cider Vinegar, Cotton balls or end of Q-tip, plaster or Band-aid. Each night before going to bed soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar, apply it to the wart and then hold it in place with a band-aid. Leave it on all night, or if you like, 24 hours a day but change the soaked cotton and band-aid each evening for a week. The wart will swell and may throb as it reacts with the vinegar and then start to turn black within the first two days and after a week or two will be gone.

N.B. It is important to continue the treatment for a few days to a week after the wart has fallen off to help ensure it does not come back. Some of these cures are painful. There is a limited scientific evidence to support the use of Duct Tape in the treatment of warts and verrucas. A suitable size piece of Duct tape is placed over the wart or verruca for around 6 days. If the tape should fall off, simply replace it with a fresh piece. Following the 6th day of treatment, immerse the wart or verruca in water. Repeat the process, ensuring around 2 months of continual treatment.

Some warts can also become cancerous, and so it is always better to get them removed.

Doctors may recommend chemical peels, surgery, freezing, and laser surgery. These treatments can be costly and painful. There are many natural remedies for warts, which are less painful and cost almost nothing. These home remedies require simple ingredients like apple cider vinegar, garlic, dandelion weed, aloe vera, etc. However, do not try these remedies for genital warts or warts on your face.

How apple cider vinegar work against warts

Vinegar has been used in folk remedies for thousands of years to treat a variety of different ailments. It is a popular ayurvedic ingredient for treating health conditions like obesity, diabetes, gout, as well as skin issues. Treatment of warts using apple cider vinegar has also withstood the test of time.

Vinegar is essentially a dilute solution of acetic (ethanoic) acid, which can kill some types of bacteria and viruses. When you apply apple cider vinegar on the area affected by warts, it burns and slowly destroys the infected skin, ultimately causing the wart to fall off. In addition, the irritation caused by the acids may stimulate the immune system to fight the virus that caused the wart.

Although lab studies have found that vinegar can kill harmful pathogens, there is not enough evidence to prove that it is reliably effective for treating warts. The evidence supporting this natural remedy is mostly anecdotal.

The best method of treating warts with apple cider vinegar

All you just need is a cotton ball, water, apple cider vinegar, and duct tape or a bandage. Mix apple cider vinegar and water in the ratio 2:1 (two parts vinegar and one-part water). Now, dip a cotton ball in the solution and apply the cotton ball directly on the wart. Cover it with tape or a bandage and keep it overnight. Next morning remove the cotton ball and bandage/tape and discard. Repeat every night until the wart falls off.

Another way is to submerge your hands or feet in the apple cider vinegar-water solution. For this, you need to create a larger quantity of solution.
