Oil for clear skin. 5 Best Face Oils for Clear, Flawless Skin: Natural Acne-Fighting Solutions
How do face oils help keep skin clear and reduce blemishes. Which oils are best for acne-prone skin. How to incorporate face oils into your skincare routine. What are the benefits of using face oils for blemish-prone skin.
The Science Behind Face Oils and Acne Prevention
Contrary to popular belief, applying oil to your face can actually help keep skin clear and reduce blemishes. Face oils have emerged as a secret weapon in the quest for naturally clear, flawless skin. But how exactly do they work?
Linoleic Acid: The Acne-Fighting Fatty Acid
Research has shown that the sebum of acne-prone individuals is often deficient in linoleic acid, a specific type of fatty acid. Topical application of linoleic acid can help reduce breakouts, and certain face oils are rich in this beneficial compound. By replenishing the skin’s linoleic acid content, these oils can help restore balance to blemish-prone skin.
Antioxidants: Combating Sebum Oxidation
Studies have revealed that acne patients experience higher levels of oxidative stress compared to those with clear skin. This oxidative stress leads to sebum oxidation, which is believed to be a key trigger for acne. Oxidized sebum is highly comedogenic (pore-clogging) and causes inflammation in the skin. Antioxidant-rich face oils can help prevent sebum oxidation, thereby decreasing the frequency and severity of breakouts.
Oil Dissolves Oil: Breaking Up Pore Blockages
The principle of “like dissolves like” applies to skincare as well. Since a pimple or blackhead is essentially a mixture of oil and dead skin cells, applying oil to the skin can help break up this sticky mess and clear it from the pores. This gentle cleansing action can be particularly effective for those with acne-prone skin.
Regulating Sebum Production
Counterintuitively, applying oil to the skin can actually help regulate the skin’s own oil production. By providing adequate hydration and nourishment, face oils can “trick” the skin into producing less sebum. This is especially beneficial for those who have been using harsh, drying skincare products, which can often lead to increased sebum production as the skin tries to compensate for the loss of moisture.
Top 5 Face Oils for Acne-Prone Skin
Now that we understand how face oils can benefit blemish-prone skin, let’s explore the five best oils for achieving a clear, flawless complexion.
1. Pumpkin Seed Oil: The All-Rounder
Pumpkin seed oil stands out as a top choice for all skin types, especially those prone to acne. Why is pumpkin seed oil so effective for acne-prone skin?
- Rich in antioxidant vitamins A and C, which help prevent sebum oxidation
- Contains zinc, which calms inflamed skin
- High in linoleic acid, crucial for balancing blemish-prone skin
- Lightweight and easily absorbed by the skin
2. Grapeseed Oil: The Lightweight Miracle
Grapeseed oil is another excellent option for those battling acne. What makes grapeseed oil beneficial for blemish-prone skin?
- Exceptionally high in linoleic acid, helping to balance skin’s oil production
- Packed with antioxidants, protecting skin from oxidative stress
- Very light texture, making it ideal for oily and combination skin types
- Easily absorbed without leaving a greasy residue
3. Jojoba Oil: The Skin-Balancing Wonder
Jojoba oil has long been a favorite among skincare enthusiasts, and for good reason. How does jojoba oil benefit acne-prone skin?
- Closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum, helping to regulate oil production
- Non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores
- Contains anti-inflammatory properties, soothing irritated skin
- Helps to dissolve and remove excess sebum from pores
Incorporating Face Oils into Your Skincare Routine
Now that we’ve identified the best face oils for acne-prone skin, how can you incorporate them into your skincare routine for maximum benefit?
Cleansing with Oil
Oil cleansing has gained popularity as a gentle yet effective method for removing makeup and impurities. How do you cleanse with oil?
- Apply a small amount of oil to dry skin
- Gently massage the oil into your skin for 1-2 minutes
- Use a warm, damp cloth to remove the oil and dissolved impurities
- Follow with your regular cleanser if desired
Moisturizing with Face Oils
Face oils can be used in place of or in addition to your regular moisturizer. How should you apply face oils for moisturizing?
- Apply 2-3 drops of oil to slightly damp skin
- Gently press the oil into your skin rather than rubbing
- Use as the last step in your skincare routine, after water-based products
- For extra hydration, mix a drop of oil into your moisturizer
Debunking Common Myths About Face Oils and Acne
Despite the growing popularity of face oils, some misconceptions persist. Let’s address some common myths about using oils on acne-prone skin.
Myth: All Oils Clog Pores
This is perhaps the most pervasive myth about face oils. Are all oils comedogenic?
The truth is, not all oils are created equal when it comes to their potential to clog pores. While some oils (like coconut oil) can be problematic for acne-prone skin, others (like the ones discussed in this article) are non-comedogenic and can actually help keep pores clear.
Myth: Oily Skin Doesn’t Need More Oil
Many people with oily or acne-prone skin avoid oils at all costs. Is this approach beneficial?
Ironically, depriving oily skin of moisture can lead to increased oil production. By providing balanced hydration, face oils can help regulate sebum production and improve overall skin health.
The Role of Face Oils in Treating Acne Scars
Beyond preventing breakouts, face oils can also play a crucial role in healing and fading acne scars. How do face oils help with acne scarring?
Promoting Skin Regeneration
Many face oils are rich in nutrients that support skin cell turnover and regeneration. This can help fade hyperpigmentation and smooth out textural irregularities left behind by acne.
Reducing Inflammation
The anti-inflammatory properties of certain face oils can help calm residual redness and irritation associated with healing acne lesions, promoting a more even skin tone.
Customizing Your Face Oil Blend
While single oils can be highly effective, creating a custom blend allows you to target multiple skin concerns simultaneously. How can you create an effective face oil blend for acne-prone skin?
Choosing Your Base Oil
Start with a lightweight, non-comedogenic oil as your base. Jojoba, grapeseed, or pumpkin seed oil make excellent choices for acne-prone skin.
Adding Essential Oils
Certain essential oils have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit acne-prone skin. Which essential oils are best for acne?
- Tea tree oil: Known for its antibacterial properties
- Lavender oil: Soothes inflammation and promotes healing
- Frankincense oil: Supports skin cell regeneration
Remember to always dilute essential oils properly, using no more than 2-3 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil.
Face Oils vs. Traditional Acne Treatments
How do face oils compare to conventional acne treatments? While face oils offer a natural alternative, it’s important to understand their strengths and limitations.
Gentleness and Skin Barrier Support
Unlike many harsh acne treatments that can strip the skin, face oils help maintain the skin’s natural barrier function. This can lead to healthier, more resilient skin in the long run.
Addressing Multiple Skin Concerns
Face oils often provide benefits beyond acne control, such as improved hydration, reduced fine lines, and enhanced overall skin health. This makes them a versatile addition to any skincare routine.
Limitations of Face Oils
While face oils can be highly effective for many people with acne-prone skin, they may not be sufficient for severe or persistent acne. In such cases, a combination of face oils and targeted acne treatments under the guidance of a dermatologist may be necessary.
Face oils have emerged as a powerful tool in the fight against acne and the quest for clear, flawless skin. By understanding the science behind their effectiveness and choosing the right oils for your skin type, you can harness their benefits to achieve a healthier, more balanced complexion. Remember, everyone’s skin is unique, so it may take some experimentation to find the perfect oil or blend for your individual needs. With patience and consistency, face oils can become an invaluable part of your skincare routine, helping you achieve the clear, glowing skin you’ve always desired.
5 Face Oils for Naturally Clear, Flawless Skin
Can applying oil to your face actually help keep skin clear and reduce blemishes? Yes! Face oils are the best kept skincare secret to naturally clear, flawless skin. Let’s talk about how face oils help to keep skin clear and which oils are the best for reducing blemishes and scarring from acne.
I have a teeny-tiny little obsession… With oil. That I put on my face.
That’s right, I put oil on my face.
Now there was a time that I would have shuddered at the very idea.
I went out of my way to scan every skincare product I purchased for “oil-free” before giving it the green light, thinking that any oil would instantly clog pores upon contact and turn me into one big walking blackhead.
And when it came to dealing with breakouts, I saw oil as my ultimate enemy. I mean, I even wiped my face with rubbing alcohol at one point (*cringes*).
Ironically, it was in an act of acne-induced desperation that I finally gave oil a chance, and I’ve never looked back.

4 Ways the Right Oils Help Keep Blemish-Prone Skin Clear
The fact is, the right face oils can work wonders for acne-prone skin.
Here’s how:
1. Certain face oils are high in linoleic acid, helping to bring balance back to blemish-prone skin
Science!
This one fascinates me the most. Studies have found that the sebum of acne-prone individuals tends to be deficient in a certain type of fatty acid called linoleic acid, and that topical application of linoleic acid can help reduce breakouts.
And guess what? Certain face oils are loaded with linoleic acid!
2. Antioxidant-rich face oils prevent sebum oxidation, a key player in blemishes and acne
More science!
A number of studies have shown that acne patients experience more oxidative stress than people with clear skin. This oxidative stress causes sebum oxidation or the oxidation of the skin’s own oil. Many researchers believe this sebum oxidation is the trigger that kicks starts acne since oxidized sebum is incredibly comedogenic (pore-clogging) and causes inflammation in the skin.
Topical antioxidants have been found to help prevent sebum oxidation and as a result decrease the frequency and severity of breakouts.
3. Face oils help to break up the gunk trapped in pores
When it comes down to it, a zit or blackhead is really nothing more than a sticky mess of oil and dead skin cells. And since like-dissolves-like (in other words, oil and water don’t mix but water and water do mix as do oil and oil), applying oil to the skin can actually help to break up this sticky mess and clear it from the pore.
4. Oils help regulate the skin’s own oil production
Applying oil to the skin can actually “trick” it into producing less sebum (its own oil). Not to mention that often, the skin will produce more sebum to counteract harsh, drying skincare products, and face oils help bring balance by deeply nourishing the skin.
Important note: excess oil production is often a symptom of hormonal imbalance (hello, androgens gone wild!). You can learn more about this and how to balance hormones naturally in my book Glow: The Nutritional Approach to Naturally Gorgeous Skin.

So which face oils help keep skin healthy, clear and as flawless as can be!?
(And NO coconut oil is NOT on the list! It breaks a lot of people out and I do not recommend it for acne-prone skin.)

PUMPKIN SEED OIL
Pumpkin seed oil is 100% hands-down my favorite face oil for all skin-types — which is why it’s in all 3 of my Body Unburdened Beauty Blends! It’s rich in the antioxidant vitamins A and C, as well as zinc. Vitamins A and C help prevent the sebum oxidation behind many outbreaks while zinc helps calm inflamed skin.
Anddddd best of all: pumpkin seed oil is especially helpful for keeping skin clear since it’s very high in linoleic acid (see above!).
GRAPESEED OIL
Like pumpkin seed oil, grapeseed oil is incredibly rich in linoleic acid, helping bring balance back to blemish-prone skin. It’s also antioxidant-rich and a very light, easily absorbed oil.
JOJOBA OIL
Jojoba oil was actually my first love. When I first started using it, all day I would look forward to bedtime so I could apply it again, knowing that I’d wake up the next morning with clearer skin (it’s a little sad but very true, and if you’ve ever been desperate for clear skin then you feel me).
Jojoba oil is a light oil that is easily absorbed. It mimics the skin’s sebum, tricking it to produce less oil, which is why it’s especially helpful for individuals with oily skin.
TAMANU OIL
Tamanu oil has been used in traditional medicine for ages, specifically for its ability to speed the healing of wounds by fighting bacteria and increasing cellular regeneration. It also has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties, making it ideal for acne sufferers.
NOTE: Stay away from tamanu oil if you have a nut allergy!
ROSEHIP SEED OIL
I confess that I decided to try rosehip seed oil after learning that Rose Byrne — a.k.a. hilariously awful and beautiful Helen from Bidesmaid — Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Miranda Kerr all use this oil. You have to admit, these ladies have lovely skin.
Rosehip seed oil is a dry oil that penetrates to the deepest layers of the skin where it regenerates cells, increasing collagen production. It is rich in vitamin C and the essential fatty acids, all of which are known to help heal scar tissue. It is also high in retinoic acid, which studies show reduces the appearance of wrinkles and brightens skin.
There’s no doubt about the fact that rosehip seed oil is fantastic! (Like pumpkin seed oil, it’s in each of the Body Unburdened Beauty Blends!) But a word or warning: I personally find it too drying to wear alone. Yes, an oil can be drying! And of course drying can mean irritating so be careful. So rosehip oil is best mixed with other more emollient oils.
How to use these face oils? Oh, the options are endless!
These oils can be used on their own or mixed with each other in a blend that best suits your skin needs.

10 Best Essential Oils + Carrier Oils for Clear Skin
Did you know you can use essential oils for clear skin? From breakouts to blemishes, your skin health could be improved without the need for expensive, toxin-filled treatment. This guide covers essential oils, carrier oils, and how-to guide for naturally clear skin.
Why I Use Essential Oils for Clear Skin
It never fails. Right before that time of the month I get hormonal breakouts. They’re usually on my chin, but I’ll get the occasional zit on my forehead – especially when I’m stressed or don’t get enough sleep. I’ve found that these homemade acne remedies work best in helping to prevent acne from starting, but sometimes the unavoidable happens.
As well as hormones, acne can be caused when sebum clogs pores. These clogged pores become a breeding ground for bacteria which is why a topical, bacteria-killing treatment such as essential oil can work wonders for clear skin.
I used to turn to traditional acne spot treatments with chemicals like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. I thought I needed something harsh to get rid of the oil and dry out my pimples. Boy, was I wrong.
Oil is not the enemy when it comes to acne. In fact, oil is beneficial for the face. I’ve given up on traditional facial cleansers and now use the oil cleansing method (OCM) to “wash” my face at night.
I’ll admit it was really tough for me to do this. I started once and gave up 3 weeks into it because I didn’t see any improvement. Then months later, I tried it again, and WOW. It was worth sticking it through to about 5-6 weeks. I absolutely love the oil cleansing method now.
If you’re also hoping to switch, I’d recommend this tutorial on the oil cleansing method and its benefits. I also have a DIY face wash I use in the morning sometimes – or I just splash with water and follow with my DIY pH balancing toner. Regardless of your routine, these are the best essential oils for clear skin each with their own acne-fighting properties.
Essential Oils for Clear Skin
1. Tea Tree
Tea Tree essential oil is ideal for those seeking clearer skin due to its naturally purifying and cleansing properties. It is known for helping with uneven skin tone and texture, balancing oily skin, and reducing redness. You can add it to your favorite skincare products or follow my tips below on how to use it for clear skin.
I recommend this DIY makeup brush cleaner and using Tea Tree essential oil to break down the oil and dirt on your brushes. Even if you are committed to using non-toxic makeup, product build-up on your makeup brushes can still cause breakouts and congest pores.
2. Lavender
Lavender essential oil has many benefits for skin health. It naturally reduces redness and helps to clean the skin’s surface without stripping its natural oils. Thanks to its antiseptic properties, Lavender essential oil is also one of the best essential oils to help with occasional blemishes. I use it to dab on blemishes as a simple but effective spot treatment.
3. Manuka
Similar to tea tree oil, Manuka essential oil is packed with purifying properties that can help with occasional blemishes. It’s like a toner in a bottle that helps to clear pores. To use, dilute a little Manuka oil with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil then apply daily.
4. Frankincense
Frankincense is a powerful essential oil to add to your skincare routine. Thanks to it’s natural calming properties it can help soothe as well as even skin tone and texture. It is also an ideal essential oil for clear skin as it helps to fade dark spots. Note, it works slowly so it can take several weeks with daily use to see results.
5. Roman Chamomile
Roman Chamomile is one of my favorite essential oils for baths thanks to its skin soothing properties. By applying Roman Chamomile essential oil to the skin you can also minimize the appearance of occasional blemishes. This is because it is packed with powerful skin-boosting properties. It is another great essential oil for treating blemishes as helps tighten pores and protect the skin against pollution and future breakouts.
6. Patchouli
Patchouli is a favored essential oil for beauty and skincare because it helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines for youthful, glowing skin. Not only does it help for glowing skin, but I’d also recommend using it in DIY beard oil as it helps eliminate irritation and itchiness while protecting the skin.
It does have an earthy aroma, so I like to pair it with a floral such as Geranium or Lavender. When making your own homemade body wash, Patchouli essential oil is a perfect addition as it naturally tones and tightens the skin, leaving your complexion smooth and healthy.
7. Rosemary
Rosemary is one of the best essential oils for clear skin as it is a refreshing astringent that helps tone and decongest. This means it helps with occasional blemishes, as well as helping to decrease redness and puffiness. When applied topically, Rosemary essential oil helps to keep pores clear. This makes it a great addition for a detox bath as it leaves skin feeling clean and revitalized.
8. Sandalwood
For those with sensitive skin, Sandalwood essential oil is a great addition to your skincare routine. It also helps to clear and decongest pores, and helps to calm redness too. It is also renowned as an effective natural method to help naturally fade dark spots from occasional blemishes.
9. Myrrh
Myrrh essential oil has been used for thousands of years for its beauty benefits. Even the Ancient Egyptians recognized its value and applied it topically to maintain healthy skin and boost radiance.
Myrrh essential oil helps with uneven skin tone and texture, and supports the fading of unwanted blemishes. It is a perfect essential oil for making a DIY makeup remover as it cleans, moisturizes, and helps tighten the skin naturally.
10. Rose
Rose essential oil is one of the best essential oils for clear skin as it boasts so many benefits. This includes soothing the skin, reducing pore size, soothing redness as well as balancing the skin’s PH.
One of the easiest ways to take advantage of these benefits is by adding it to a homemade face toner or even your bath. By using Rose essential oil in your everyday routine you will notice an improvement in your skin’s texture thanks to numerous vitamins and antioxidants.

Another way to use essential oils for clear skin is facial steaming. Fill a large bowl or basin with steaming water. Add three drops of essential oil. Create a tent over the bowl by placing a towel over your head and face, allowing the steam and essential oil to penetrate your pores.
Best Carrier Oils for Clear Skin
These carrier oils are excellent to help promote clear skin, fade blemish marks, improve skin tone and texture, and help to balance oily skin. My go-to for the face are rosehip seed and jojoba oils.
I like to do an 80/20 of rosehip seed and jojoba and then add the essential oils as needed. You can mix and match any of these carrier oils, or use them solo. Jojoba oil is very thick and usually works better when combined with another carrier oil.
Rosehip Seed Oil
As a lightweight carrier oil it is great for all skin types. Rosehip seed oil is packed with Essential Fatty Acids as well as Vitamins A, & C that are vital for skin renewal and skin cell repair.
Argan Oil
Argan oil is excellent for acne-prone skin as well as improving skin texture and tone. It has a light consistency so can be absorbed quickly. It is rich in vitamin E so is great for fine lines, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks.
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is one of the best carrier oils for mature and acne-prone skin as it is rich in omega fatty and amino acids. It is also ideal for dry skin as it moisturizes without clogging pores.
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is one of the most versatile carrier oils as it is cheap and great for all skin types. It is lightweight and odorless as well as easily absorbed by the skin.
Apricot Kernel Oil
Not only is apricot kernel oil inexpensive, it is rich in vitamins A and E making it great for sensitive and mature skin.
Jojoba Oil
As it is a slightly thicker consistency, jojoba oil is most similar to the skin’s natural oil (sebum.) It is rich in vitamin E making it ideal for those with dry and problem skin.

The use of natural oils for skin care is becoming more and more popular – after all, oils are a natural source of vitamins, trace elements, as well as fatty acids, and besides, they are as safe as possible. By pairing the oils with your skin in mind, you can create the perfect skin care product. Base oil blends can be enriched with plant extracts and essential oils. This recipe is designed to care for dry and mature skin: light oils nourish and smooth the skin, give elasticity and firmness, while being perfectly absorbed without leaving a greasy feeling. A few drops of oil are applied to moistened facial skin (you can use a tonic with hyaluronic acid) and evenly distributed along the massage lines over the skin.
Step 1
Preparing all the necessary components
Step 2
The process of creating an oil mixture is quite simple. To begin with, we measure the main components of the recipe: caprylic (9 g) and sasanqua oil (9 g). Kapilik – a light fraction of coconut oil, non-comedogenic, improves gliding and distribution over the skin. Sasanqua oil is perfectly absorbed without leaving a greasy sheen, perfect for caring for any type of skin, intensively moisturizes and nourishes it, makes it smooth and silky, improves complexion.
Step 3
Next, we measure out nourishing oils: jojoba (7 g) is a very valuable carrier oil that can replace any expensive cream. The properties of jojoba oil are due to its amino acids – a protein that resembles collagen – a waxy substance, it nourishes, moisturizes, and penetrates deep into the pores, ideally caring for the skin of the face, neck, and décolleté. Argan oil (6 g) has the highest content of vitamin E compared to other vegetable oils, it also contains a high content of oleic acid and a large amount of vitamin F, due to which argan oil has high antioxidant and regenerating properties.
Step 4
Then we introduce squalane (2 g) into the mixture – it has leveling properties, when applied it is distributed evenly, allowing the skin to breathe, increases its firmness and elasticity, improves the penetration of the mixture components into the skin, provides silkiness, smooth glide. For additional nutrition of the skin, as well as stabilization of the oil mixture during storage and use, we add vitamin E (0.5 g).
Step 5
To enhance the properties of the mixture and give it a pleasant aroma, add oils of geranium (3 drops) and verbena (2 drops). Geranium has a delicate floral-pink aroma, promotes regeneration, tightens, smoothes and deeply rejuvenates the skin, regulates fat balance. Verbena is a legendary truly feminine subtle refreshing magical fragrance. The cosmetic effect of verbena is aimed at stimulating blood circulation, smoothing the skin relief and improving the complexion, so it is important to follow the dosage (for sensitive skin, the amount of input can be reduced or the oil can be excluded from the recipe).
Step 6
We enrich the co2 recipe with immortelle extract (2 drops). Immortelle promotes the production of its own collagen, and due to its high antioxidant properties it is a powerful tool in the fight against wrinkles, strengthens the walls of capillaries, improves complexion, and has a lymphatic drainage effect. Then thoroughly mix the resulting mixture until all components are evenly distributed.
Step 7
To store the mixture of oils, you must use dark glass bottles (for ease of use, it is better to choose bottles with a pipette).
