Remedy for uti infections. Unlocking the Benefits of L. rhamnosus: A Deep Dive into Its Potential for Gut Health, Diarrhea Prevention, and IBS Relief
What are the benefits of L. rhamnosus? How does it affect gut health? Can it prevent and treat diarrhea? Does it provide relief for IBS symptoms? Dive into the science behind this probiotic bacterium.
The Power of L. rhamnosus: A Probiotic Powerhouse
The human body is home to a vast array of bacteria, with estimates ranging from 10 to 100 trillion microorganisms. These bacteria, collectively known as the gut microbiota, play a crucial role in maintaining optimal health. While a balanced gut microbiome offers numerous benefits, an imbalance has been linked to a variety of diseases.
One of the most well-studied beneficial bacteria is Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus), a probiotic that is available as a dietary supplement and is often added to dairy products. This article delves into the potential benefits, side effects, and dosage of this remarkable probiotic.
Understanding L. rhamnosus: A Resilient Gut Resident
L. rhamnosus is a member of the Lactobacillus genus, a group of bacteria that produce the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the sugar lactose found in dairy products. This bacterium is uniquely adapted to survive in the acidic and basic environments within the human body, allowing it to adhere to and colonize the intestinal walls. These characteristics give L. rhamnosus a better chance of thriving and potentially offering long-term benefits.
What sets L. rhamnosus apart is its versatility. It is not only available as a probiotic supplement but is also commonly added to a variety of foods, such as yogurt, cheese, and milk, to enhance their probiotic content or to aid in the cheese-making process.
Preventing and Treating Diarrhea with L. rhamnosus
Diarrhea is a common issue that can sometimes be caused by bacterial infection. While diarrhea is often harmless, persistent cases can lead to fluid loss and dehydration. Studies have shown that L. rhamnosus may be effective in preventing and treating various types of diarrhea, including antibiotic-related diarrhea, traveler’s diarrhea, and acute watery diarrhea.
A review of 12 studies involving 1,499 people found that supplementing with a specific strain of L. rhamnosus, known as L. rhamnosus GG, reduced the risk of antibiotic-related diarrhea from 22.4% to 12.3%. This is particularly important, as antibiotics can disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to digestive issues like diarrhea.
Relieving IBS Symptoms with L. rhamnosus
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects a significant portion of the global population, with prevalence rates ranging from 9% to 23% of adults worldwide. While the exact cause of IBS is unknown, it is often associated with changes in the gut microbiome.
Studies suggest that people with IBS may have fewer Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria, but more potentially harmful bacteria like Clostridium, Streptococcus, and E. coli. Interestingly, research indicates that Lactobacillus-rich foods or supplements, including L. rhamnosus, may help relieve common IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain.
Maintaining Optimal Gut Health with L. rhamnosus
As a probiotic, L. rhamnosus plays a crucial role in supporting overall gut health. Like other beneficial bacteria, L. rhamnosus helps to maintain a healthy balance in the gut microbiome, which is essential for proper digestive function and overall wellbeing.
Studies have shown that L. rhamnosus can help strengthen the gut barrier, which may be particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). By reinforcing the gut barrier, L. rhamnosus may help alleviate some of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with IBS.
Exploring the Potential Side Effects of L. rhamnosus
While L. rhamnosus is generally considered safe for most people, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects. Some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal symptoms, such as bloating, gas, or mild diarrhea, particularly when first starting to take L. rhamnosus supplements.
In rare cases, L. rhamnosus may pose a risk for individuals with compromised immune systems or those who have recently undergone surgery. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating L. rhamnosus or any other probiotic supplement into your daily routine.
Determining the Optimal Dosage of L. rhamnosus
The recommended dosage of L. rhamnosus can vary depending on the intended use and the specific strain being taken. For general gut health maintenance, typical dosages range from 1 to 10 billion colony-forming units (CFU) per day.
For the prevention or treatment of specific conditions, such as diarrhea or IBS, higher dosages may be recommended. It’s important to follow the instructions provided by the supplement manufacturer or to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate dosage for your individual needs.

The human body contains 10–100 trillion bacteria (1).
Most of these bacteria live inside your gut and are collectively known as microbiota. They play an important role in maintaining optimal health.
While there are many benefits to having a healthy balance of gut bacteria, an imbalance is linked to numerous diseases (2, 3).
One of the most well-studied friendly bacteria is Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus), which is available as a dietary supplement and added to a variety of foods, such as dairy products.
This article reviews the benefits, side effects, and dosage of L. rhamnosus.
L. rhamnosus is a type of bacteria found in your intestines.
It belongs to the genus Lactobacillus, a type of bacteria that produce the enzyme lactase. This enzyme breaks down the sugar lactose — which is found in dairy — into lactic acid.
Bacteria from this genus, such as L. rhamnosus, are considered probiotic.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that can offer health benefits when consumed (4).
Hundreds of studies support the benefits of L. rhamnosus.
Uniquely adapted to survive in acidic and basic conditions within your body, this bacterium can also adhere to and colonize your intestinal walls. Such characteristics give L. rhamnosus a better chance of survival — so it may offer longer-term benefits (5, 6).
There are many different strains, each with different characteristics (7).
L. rhamnosus is available as a probiotic supplement and often added to yogurts, cheeses, milk, and other dairy products to boost probiotic content.
It can also be added to dairy for other reasons. For example, L.rhamnosus plays a key role in cheese ripening, which enhances flavor (8, 9).
However, many products that contain L. rhamnosus don’t typically include it in the ingredients list.
Summary
L. rhamnosus is a member of the probiotic Lactobacillus genus of bacteria. It is adapted to survive in your gut, thus potentially offering longer-term benefits.
L. rhamnosus has numerous potential benefits and uses for your digestive system, as well as other areas of health.
1. May Prevent and Treat Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a common issue sometimes caused by bacterial infection.
In most situations, diarrhea is relatively harmless. However, persistent diarrhea can cause fluid loss, which may lead to dehydration.
Studies show that L. rhamnosus may help prevent or treat various types of diarrhea.
For example, L. rhamnosus may protect against antibiotic-related diarrhea. Antibiotics can disrupt microbiota, which may result in digestive symptoms like diarrhea (10, 11).
For instance, a review of 12 studies in 1,499 people found that supplementing with a specific strain called L. rhamnosus GG reduced the risk of antibiotic-related diarrhea from 22.4% to 12.3% (12).
In addition, taking a probiotic during and after antibiotic use can help restore your healthy gut bacteria, since antibiotics often kill them alongside harmful bacteria.
What’s more, L. rhamnosus may protect against various other types of diarrhea, such as traveler’s diarrhea, acute watery diarrhea, and acute gastroenteritis-related diarrhea (13, 14, 15).
2. May Relieve IBS Symptoms
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects 9–23% of adults worldwide (16).
While its cause is unknown, IBS causes uncomfortable symptoms, such as bloating, abdominal pain, and unusual bowel movements (16).
Interestingly, there may be a link between IBS and changes in the body’s natural gut flora.
For instance, people with IBS may have fewer Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria but more potentially harmful Clostridium, Streptococcus, and E. coli (17, 18).
Human studies note that Lactobacillus-rich foods or supplements may relieve common IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain (19, 20, 21).
Additionally, animal studies have found that L. rhamnosus strains may strengthen gut barriers, which may help relieve IBS symptoms (22).
However, more research in humans is needed before recommendations can be made.
3. Aids Gut Health
Like other probiotic bacteria, L. rhamnosus is great for your digestive health.
It belongs to the Lactobacillus family, which produces lactic acid. Lactic acid helps prevent the survival of potentially harmful bacteria in your digestive tract.
For instance, L. rhamnosus can prevent Candida albicans, a type of harmful bacteria, from colonizing your intestinal walls (23).
L. rhamnosus not only prevents bad bacteria from colonizing but also encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria, such as Bacteroides, Clostridia, and bifidobacteria (24).
What’s more, L. rhamnosus helps increase the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate (25).
SCFAs are made when your healthy gut bacteria ferment fiber inside your digestive tract. They are a source of nourishment for the cells lining your colon (26).
In addition, studies link SCFAs to various benefits, including protection against colon cancer, weight loss, and lower blood sugar levels (27, 28, 29).
4. May Protect Against Cavities
Dental cavities are a common occurrence, especially in children (30).
They’re formed by harmful bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria produce acids that break down your enamel, or the outer layer of your teeth (31).
Probiotic bacteria like L. rhamnosus have antimicrobial properties, which may help fight these harmful bacteria (32).
In one study, 594 children received either regular milk or milk containing L. rhamnosus GG for 5 days per week. After 7 months, children in the probiotic group had fewer cavities and a lower number of potentially harmful bacteria than children in the regular-milk group (33).
Another study in 108 adolescents found that taking a lozenge containing probiotic bacteria — including L. rhamnosus GG — significantly reduced bacterial growth and gum inflammation, compared to a placebo (34).
That said, more human studies are needed before recommendations can be made.
5. May Help Prevent UTIs
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that can happen anywhere along your urinary tract, including your kidneys, bladder, and urethra.
It is much more common in women and typically caused by two strains of bacteria — Escherichia coli (E. coli)and Staphylococcus saprophyticus (35, 36).
Some studies indicate that probiotic bacteria, including certain strains of L. rhamnosus, may prevent UTIs by killing harmful bacteria and restoring vaginal flora.
For instance, an analysis of 5 studies in 294 women found that several Lactobacillus bacteria, including L. rhamnosus, were safe and effective at preventing UTIs (37).
Other studies discovered that the L. rhamnosus GR1 strain — given either orally or intravaginally — was particularly effective at killing harmful bacteria in the urinary tract (38, 39).
However, not all L. rhamnosus strains may help treat UTIs. For example, L. rhamnosus GG strains don’t attach well to vaginal walls and may not be effective (40).
While these findings are promising, more human research is needed.
6–10. Other Potential Benefits
L. rhamnosus has been linked to several other potential health benefits. However, these properties are backed by fewer or weaker studies:
- May promote weight loss. L. rhamnosus may suppress appetite and food cravings, especially in women (41, 42).
- May increase insulin sensitivity. Animal studies show that several L. rhamnosus strains may improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control (43, 44, 45, 46).
- May reduce blood cholesterol. One mouse study found that L. rhamnosus lowered blood cholesterol levels and had a similar effect on cholesterol metabolism as statins, a class of drugs that helps treat high cholesterol (47).
- May fight allergies. L. rhamnosus strains may help prevent or relieve allergy symptoms by promoting the growth of friendly gut bacteria and suppressing the growth of harmful bacteria (48, 49, 50).
- May help treat acne. In a small study in 20 adults, taking an L. rhamnosus SP1 supplement helped reduce the appearance of acne (51).
Summary
L. rhamnosus may boost your overall digestive health, potentially treating diarrhea, relieving IBS symptoms, and strengthening your gut. It may also protect against cavities and UTIs. A number of other potential benefits haven’t been rigorously tested.
L. rhamnosus probiotic supplements can be purchased in health food stores or online.
They can contain only L. rhamnosus species or these species combined with other probiotic bacteria.
Probiotic bacteria are measured by the number of living organisms per capsule, known as colony-forming units (CFU). A typical L. rhamnosus supplement holds approximately 10 billion live bacteria — or 10 billion CFU — per capsule.
For general health, 1 capsule containing at least 10 billion live bacteria is sufficient.
To help prevent antibiotic-related diarrhea, take 2 capsules of L. rhamnosus GG daily providing 10 billion live bacteria or 1 capsule with over 20 billion live bacteria (52).
Take the probiotic supplement a few hours after your antibiotic(s), then continue for at least one week after your course of antibiotics to help restore a healthy gut.
Dosage guidelines have not been established for other uses of L. rhamnosus, but experts suggest that a similar daily dose may be appropriate.
Keep in mind that L. rhamnosus is sometimes added to dairy products — such as yogurts and milk — to boost their probiotic content and to cheeses to aid the ripening process.
Summary
L. rhamnosus can be taken as a probiotic supplement and is often added to various foods, especially dairy products. This means that your diet may naturally provide an extra dose of this bacterium.
L. rhamnosus products are generally safe and well tolerated with few side effects.
In some cases, people may experience symptoms like stomach bloating or gas (53).
That said, people with compromised immune systems — such as those with HIV, AIDS, or cancer — should avoid L. rhamnosus and other probiotics (or dairy products with added probiotics), as such supplements may cause an infection.
Likewise, if you’re taking drugs that may weaken your immune system — such as steroid drugs, cancer drugs, or medication for an organ transplant — you should avoid taking probiotics.
If you fall into these criteria or are concerned about side effects, consult with your medical provider before taking a probiotic supplement or dairy products with added probiotics.
Summary
L. rhamnosus is generally safe with few side effects. However, those with compromised immune systems or taking certain medications should avoid taking probiotics or first consult with a medical professional.
L. rhamnosus is a type of friendly bacteria naturally found in your gut.
Its health benefits include relieving IBS symptoms, treating diarrhea, strengthening your gut health, and protecting against cavities.
L. rhamnosus is available as a probiotic supplement and found in some dairy products.
If you are interested in improving your digestive health, consider trying out L. rhamnosus.

A urinary tract infection (UTI) can knock you off your feet, causing a range of symptoms. You can use these home remedies to help manage those symptoms.
A urinary tract infection (UTI) can knock you off your feet, causing a range of symptoms like bloody urine and pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic region.
These infections are responsible for roughly 8 million doctor visits each year and are the second most common type of infection to occur in the human body. They occur more often in women but can affect men as well.
Antibiotics are required to treat UTIs and can help speed up recovery, manage symptoms, and prevent complications. If left untreated, UTIs can lead to serious complications and health problems.
In addition to using antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional, there are several home remedies that may help ease symptoms and prevent a recurrence.

A urinary tract infection is a type of infection that occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract and multiply. This infection can affect one or more areas within the urinary tract, including the:
- urethra
- bladder
- ureters
- kidneys
Symptoms
UTIs can cause symptoms, such as:
- painful, burning sensation while urinating
- frequent urge to urinate, often producing little urine
- lower abdominal pain
- urine leakage
- cloudy or foul-smelling urine
- bloody urine
- lower back pain
If a UTI spreads to the kidneys, which is a serious infection, you may have symptoms like:
- fever
- upper back pain
- nausea and vomiting
Causes
Though UTIs can affect anyone, they’re more common in women. In fact, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases estimates that 40% to 60% of women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime.
This is because people assigned female at birth have a shorter urethra, so it’s easier for bacteria to enter their bladder.
UTIs in men are often related to an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hypertrophy) blocking the flow of urine. This allows bacteria to have an easier time occupying the urinary tract.
In almost 90% of cases, the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the cause of the UTI. E. coli is normally found inside the intestines. When confined to the intestines, it’s harmless. But sometimes, this bacterium gets into the urinary tract and causes an infection.
Sex may trigger a UTI in women. This is because intercourse can move bacteria from the anal area to near the opening of the urethra. Women can lower their risk of infection by urinating after sexual activity.
Using spermicides, diaphragms, and condoms may also raise the risk of a UTI. The risk is higher in people with a weakened immune system as well.
UTI fast facts
- UTIs are the second most common type of infection.
- E. coli is the cause of most UTIs, but viruses and other germs can also cause them.
- There are 8 million UTI-related doctor visits per year in the United States.

Other home remedies to get rid of a UTI without antibiotics
Until there are more advancements in UTI treatment, antibiotics remain the most effective standard treatment.
Along with standard antibiotic therapy prescribed by a healthcare professional, you can try several home remedies to feel better sooner and reduce the likelihood of recurrent infections. Read on to learn about some alternative UTI treatments.
Cranberries may contain an ingredient that stops bacteria from attaching to the walls of the urinary tract.
Though research is inconclusive, some studies suggest that you might be able to reduce your risk of UTIs with cranberry products, including unsweetened cranberry juice, cranberry supplements, or dried cranberries.
But other studies have noted that the use of cranberries to prevent UTIs doesn’t produce consistent results, so more research is needed.

Although urinating can be painful when you have a UTI, it’s important to drink as many fluids as possible — particularly water. Most adults should aim to drink between six and eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day.
The more you drink, the more you’ll urinate, which can help flush harmful bacteria from the urinary tract.
Holding your urine or ignoring the urge to urinate can allow bacteria to multiply in your urinary tract. As a rule of thumb, always use the bathroom when you feel the urge.
It’s also important to make sure you’re fully emptying your bladder when you urinate, and to always urinate after sex, especially if you have a vagina. If you do, it’s also important to wipe front to back after you urinate.
Probiotics promote healthy digestion and immunity. They also may be effective in treating and preventing UTIs when used alongside standard antibiotic therapy.
With a UTI, bad bacteria replace good bacteria in the urogenital system, especially those of one group called Lactobacillus. Probiotics can restore good bacteria and might reduce the recurrence of a UTI.
Though some research suggests that probiotics may be effective in UTI prevention and treatment, more studies are needed.
If you’re interested in trying probiotics for urinary tract health, consider Uqoura Promote Daily Probiotic supplement, a capsule designed to promote vaginal health, which in turn supports the health of the urinary tract.

Most UTIs aren’t serious if treated promptly with antibiotics. But if left untreated, the infection can spread up to the kidneys and bloodstream, and become life threatening. Kidney infections can lead to kidney damage and kidney scarring.
Symptoms of a UTI usually improve within 2 to 4 days after starting antibiotic therapy. Many doctors prescribe an antibiotic for at least 3 days.
But some UTIs don’t clear up after antibiotic therapy, which may mean that a different type of antibiotic is required.
The overuse or misuse of antibiotics can also contribute to antibiotic resistance, a growing problem that can make it more challenging to treat issues like recurrent UTIs. Because of this risk, experts have been looking for other ways to treat UTIs alongside antibiotics.
Antibiotic resistance 101
- When certain antibiotics are prescribed repeatedly, the bacteria they target can grow resistant to them.
- At least 2 million people per year in the United States contract antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Some research has shown that UTIs may be treated without traditional antibiotics by targeting E. coli’s surface component for adhesion, FimH.
Typically, the urinary tract flushes away bacteria when you urinate. But according to researchers, FimH can cause E. coli to firmly attach to the cells in the urinary tract, which can make it hard for the body to naturally flush the bacteria from the urinary tract.
If researchers can uncover a way to target this protein with other types of therapies, there may someday be other treatment options for UTIs, in addition to antibiotics.
D-mannose
D-mannose is a sugar that sticks to E. coli. Recently, researchers have studied the possibility of using D-mannose and other mannose-containing substances to block the binding of FimH to the lining of the urinary tract.
One 2021 review concluded that D-mannose could help reduce the incidence of recurrent UTIs and improve quality of life. More research is needed, but potentially, a medication that uses a mannose-containing substance that opposes FimH from attaching to the lining of the urinary tract could show promise for the treatment of UTIs caused by E. coli.
Researchers have also tested immune-boosting drugs, which could help urinary tract cells become more resistant to infections.
The American Urological Association (AUA) recommends vaginal estrogen as a nonantibiotic option for perimenopausal or postmenopausal women seeking to prevent recurrent infections.
Some research estimates that 25% to 42% of uncomplicated UTIs can go away on their own. This is usually only common in women with no other health issues.
But there are some serious risks that can come from leaving a UTI untreated, including pyelonephritis and sepsis. Therefore, it’s important to talk with your doctor and seek treatment if you suspect you may have a UTI.
Here are a few tips for keeping UTIs at bay.
Skip baths
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend taking showers instead of baths to help prevent UTIs. If you’re prone to frequent UTIs, you may want to swap your soothing soaks with luxurious showers.
Invest in a bidet
Wiping from front to back after going to the bathroom can help prevent the spread of bacteria to the urethra, but it can be tough to clean thoroughly with toilet paper alone. You can be clean without having to jump in the shower by installing an inexpensive bidet attachment, like the LUXE Bidet Neo 120.
A bidet isn’t just a great option for cleaning up after going number two. You can use it to freshen up after sex or while having your period.
Wash your genital area properly
Proper washing doesn’t include douching or the use of scented products. In fact, these can cause irritation and exacerbate down-there issues. Instead, choose a gentle cleanser, like Cetaphil, or wash with water alone.
Drink lots of water
The same advice for treating a UTI goes for preventing one. Drinking plenty of water on a regular basis helps flush out nasty bacteria that can lead to infections.
UTIs are painful. But with antibiotic treatment, you can address the infection and stop the pain. Talk with your doctor if you have symptoms of a UTI. With proper treatment, you should begin to feel better in a few days.
Take your antibiotics as instructed — even after your symptoms improve — to prevent complications or a secondary infection.
If the UTI doesn’t resolve after antibiotic treatment or you end up with multiple episodes of a UTI, your doctor will likely do further testing.
This could be in the form of:
- a repeat urine culture
- urinary tract ultrasound
- plain film X-ray
- CT scan
- cystoscopy
- urodynamic testing
You may be referred to a urologist, depending on the severity of your UTI, or if you have chronic infections.
Certain strains of bacteria can cause UTIs. They can range from mild to severe. The degree of severity depends on multiple factors, including:
- your immune system status
- the bacterium causing the UTI
- where in your urinary tract the UTI is happening
Your doctor will be able to provide you with an evaluation tailored to your needs in order to make the right diagnosis and determine the proper therapy.

Can UTIs go away on their own?
Research estimates that 25% to 42% of uncomplicated UTIs in women can go away on their own.
But keep in mind that there are risks associated with leaving UTIs untreated, so it’s important to seek treatment from a healthcare professional if you suspect you have a UTI.
Do you need to see a doctor to get antibiotics for a UTI?
You need to speak with your doctor or a licensed medical professional to be prescribed antibiotics for a UTI. This can usually be done in person, at the doctor, or over the phone.
If this is your first UTI or your symptoms are severe, it may be helpful to get treated in person. You may also want to consider an in-person visit with your healthcare professional to rule out sexually transmitted infections (STIs) if you’re sexually active or have several sexual partners.
How long do UTIs last?
With antibiotic treatment, symptoms of a UTI typically improve within 2 to 4 days.
But this can vary depending on many factors, including how quickly you receive treatment, the severity of your infection, and whether any complications arise.
Keep in mind that the course of antibiotics should be completed for UTI symptoms to completely resolve and prevent recurrent infections.
What’s the fastest way to get rid of a UTI?
Antibiotics are the fastest and most effective method for treating bacterial UTIs.
How long does it take for a UTI to go away without antibiotics?
Sometimes, UTIs clear up on their own. It can take about a week for symptoms to subside.
What’s the most effective home remedy for a UTI?
There’s limited research on the effectiveness of UTI home remedies. If you’re experiencing symptoms of a UTI, especially if they’re severe, it’s important to consult with a doctor.
Do you need an antibiotic to get rid of chronic UTIs?
A short course of antibiotics is typically the first-line treatment for UTIs. But for chronic infections, a doctor might prescribe a long-term, low dose antibiotic.
UTIs can be very common. If you suspect you may have a UTI or are experiencing any symptoms, try these home remedies to alleviate any symptoms you’re experiencing. If they don’t get better or the symptoms seem worse, be sure to speak with your doctor to get a proper diagnosis and be prescribed antibiotics.

Find out the best ways to treat and prevent urinary tract infections to keep your kidneys and bladder healthy. Tips for strengthening immunity and proper nutrition.
Urinary tract infections are one of the most common diseases today, especially among women. Many people have problems with the bladder and kidneys, which lead to unpleasant symptoms and can complicate the general condition of the body.
However, certain methods can prevent and treat urinary tract infections. In this article, we will consider the main methods of prevention, as well as methods of treatment of this disease.
It is important to note that diseases of the urinary tract can lead to serious complications if they are not addressed in time. Therefore, you should take care of prevention in advance, and immediately seek medical help at the first sign.
Correct treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections
Prevention
To prevent urinary tract infections, it is necessary to maintain hygiene and a healthy lifestyle. You need to drink enough water to keep your urine regular. Uncontrollable urination should be carried out as needed and on time. The mode of sleep and wakefulness should also be balanced.
Do not abuse foods that make urine acidic or alkaline. This leads to a change in the pH level of urine and creates favorable conditions for the reproduction of microorganisms.
Treatment
The choice of treatment for urinary tract infections depends on the type and intensity of the infection, the infectious organism present, and sensitivity to antibiotics. Antibacterial drugs may be one of the best treatments for urinary tract infections. They should not be taken without a doctor’s prescription or without establishing an accurate diagnosis.
The patient’s diet, fluid intake, general hygiene and prevention are important. These actions will help to avoid urinary tract infections in the future.
Urinary tract infections – what is it?
Urinary tract infections are diseases that affect various parts of the genitourinary system, such as the bladder, ureters, and kidneys. They occur when bacteria or other microorganisms infect these organs and cause inflammation.
Urinary tract infections usually occur when bacteria normally found in the intestines enter the urinary tract. This can happen through improper use of toilet paper, poor hygiene, contact with infected animals, or through sexual contact.
Symptoms of urinary tract infections may include pain when urinating, frequent urination, severe pain in the lower abdomen, fever, and feeling tired. If left untreated, urinary tract infections can lead to more serious conditions such as pyelonephritis or kidney failure.
Causes of urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections are a serious condition that can occur for a variety of reasons. Some of them may be controllable and some may not. But in general, the following factors underlie the occurrence of urinary tract infections:
- Violation of hygiene. Poor intimate hygiene, use of dirty pads or stale tampons, wearing clothes that are too tight, and improper showering after going to the toilet can promote the growth of bacteria in the urinary tract.
- Weakened immunity. The immune system is the body’s primary defense against infections, so any illness, stress, prolonged use of antibiotics, or poor nutrition can reduce its effectiveness, leading to bacterial growth and urinary tract infections.
- Sexual activity. Sexual contact is also one of the factors that can lead to urinary tract infection, especially if the partner has a sexually transmitted infection.
- Unsuccessful treatment. Incorrect use of antibiotics or insufficient duration of treatment for urinary infections can lead to recurrence of the disease, bacterial resistance to the drugs used, and the development of a chronic process.
- Genetic predisposition. In some cases, urinary tract infections may be inherited, especially among those who have close relatives who suffered from this disease.
In general, the causes of urinary tract infections can be multifaceted, so it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle, pay due attention to personal hygiene, do not overuse antibiotics, take preventive measures during sexual intercourse and seek medical help at the first symptoms of the disease.

Hemorrhages in the urine
Sometimes the infection can lead to visible hemorrhages or spotting in the urine.
Diagnosis of urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections are common but are not always easy to diagnose. To correctly determine the presence of an infection, it is necessary to examine the urinary tract and determine its type.
To more accurately determine the type of infection and its location in the urinary tract, additional research methods, such as ultrasound, X-ray, CT scanner, cystoscopy, etc. , can be used.
It is important to remain vigilant and see a doctor at the first sign of an infection, as symptoms can mimic those of other illnesses, and delays in diagnosis and treatment can lead to serious complications.
Treatment of urinary tract infections: effective methods and recommendations
Drink enough water
Drinking enough water helps to remove bacteria and restore the health of the urinary tract. It is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
Take antibiotics
Antibiotics are the most effective medicine for fighting urinary tract infections. The dosage and duration of administration is determined by the doctor.
Insulate the lower body
Insulate the lower body to prevent the disease from getting worse and reduce the risk of re-infection. To do this, you can wear warm pants and socks, do not sit or lie on a cold surface.
Avoid foods that promote bacterial growth
Infectious bacteria of the urinary tract multiply rapidly in conditions of high acidity of the urine. One of the main factors of this condition is the consumption of sour, spicy and salty foods. They should be excluded from the diet during treatment of the infection.
Use thermal treatments
Thermal treatments such as compresses and heating pads help reduce pain, improve blood circulation and speed up the healing process. However, before using such procedures, you should consult your doctor.
Important to remember:
- Don’t put off going to the doctor at the first sign of a urinary tract infection;
- Avoid hypothermia;
- Follow your doctor’s advice and never exceed the dosage and duration of your medications.
Prevention of urinary tract infections
Drink enough fluids
One of the main ways to prevent urinary tract infections is to drink enough water and other fluids. The liquid helps remove bacteria and other harmful substances from the body, which helps prevent their reproduction.
Maintain hygiene
Another important aspect of urinary tract infection prevention is hygiene. Remember to wash your face and wash your hands before and after going to the toilet, change your underwear on time, and don’t use other people’s toiletries.
Avoid long-term use of contraceptives
Long-term use of contraceptives may increase the risk of urinary tract infections. If necessary, contact your doctor to determine the appropriate contraceptive method for you.
After intimate contact
After intimate contact, it is recommended to wash the intimate areas in a timely manner to avoid the possibility of bacteria entering the urinary tract.
Take care of your immunity
Strong immunity is the key to the health of the whole organism. Try to watch your diet, do not overwork and lead an active lifestyle to protect your immunity and increase the body’s resistance to infections.
Nutrition for urinary tract infections
Drinking enough fluids
Drinking plenty of fluids is especially important for urinary tract infections. At least 8 glasses of water a day will help flush out bacteria and reduce inflammation. Soda water, coffee, and alcohol should be avoided as these drinks can irritate the bladder.
Immune-supporting nutrition
For urinary tract infections, it is especially important to eat foods rich in vitamins and minerals that strengthen the immune system. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, berries, and green vegetables, and vitamin A, found in yellow and orange-colored vegetables, may be helpful in this case. In addition, you should reduce the amount of refined carbohydrates and sugar in your diet, as they can suppress the immune system.
Foods that reduce inflammation
For urinary tract infections, eating anti-inflammatory foods can help reduce inflammation and pain. Antioxidant fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, berries, and asparagus, as well as omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils and nuts, may be helpful.
- Avoid spicy and fatty foods as they can aggravate urinary tract inflammation.
- Reduce the amount of salt you eat as it can dehydrate your body.
- If you are taking antibiotics, make sure you eat food that the antibiotic does not prohibit.
Conventional treatments for urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections are a fairly common disease that can lead to serious complications. Since infections are caused by bacteria or viruses, antibiotics are usually used to treat them. However, there are traditional therapies that can be helpful when combined with medical therapy.
Cystone is an herbal preparation that helps fight urinary tract infections. It has antibacterial properties and enhances the action of antibiotics. Cystone also improves the functioning of the urinary system, promotes the elimination of harmful substances from the body and reduces inflammation.
Cranberry is another known treatment for urinary tract infections. Cranberries contain substances that prevent bacteria from attaching to the walls of the bladder and ureters. In addition, the use of cranberries improves the functioning of the urinary system and reduces the risk of recurrence of the disease.
Peach leaves contain substances that have disinfectant properties and relieve inflammation of the urinary tract. To prepare the infusion, use fresh or dry peach leaves, which insist on boiling water. Peach infusion also helps to remove toxins from the body.
Treatment of urinary tract infections requires an integrated approach. Conventional therapies can help enhance drug therapy and speed up the healing process. However, before starting any treatment, you should consult your doctor.
When should I see a doctor for urinary tract infections?
Urinary tract infections are a common condition that requires medical attention for proper treatment and prevention. If you notice the following symptoms: pain in the lower abdomen, frequent urination, pain during urination, pain when urinating, changes in the color of urine – this may be a sign of a urinary tract infection.
If you have these symptoms:
- See a doctor as soon as possible;

CANEPHRON® N: rational therapy for urinary tract infectionsExacerbation of diseases of the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract is a fairly common occurrence, especially in autumn and spring. Due to unpredictable weather, we run the risk of facing such delicate diseases as inflammation of the bladder (cystitis), kidneys (pyelonephritis). Moreover, women are prone to such problems much more often than men, which is explained by a number of reasons, including anatomical features. Today, there are many drugs indicated for the treatment of cystitis and pyelonephritis. The leader of this group of drugs is the combined preparation of plant origin CANEFRON ® H of the German pharmaceutical company Bionorica. When preparing the material, data from the analytical market research system “PharmXplorer” / “Pharmstandard” of the company “Proxima Research” were used. Urinary tract infections are among the most common diseases in urological practice (Sultanova E. A., Shpot E.V., 2011). The most common manifestation of an uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection is acute cystitis (inflammation of the lining of the bladder). This disease is common among both women and men. But more often cystitis is noted in women due to the anatomical structure of the genitourinary apparatus. In most cases, cystitis develops suddenly, after exposure to one of the provoking factors. Manifested by frequent painful urination, pain in the urethra, pain in the lower abdomen. Frequent hypothermia, infections of the genitourinary organs, irritation with chemicals lead to the development of cystitis (Izotova N.A., Sarafanova N.A., 2007). The manifestation of a complicated bladder infection is chronic cystitis. Inflammation of the bladder can be the first sign of any urological disease or complicate its course. Chronic cystitis can cause the development of an inflammatory process in the kidneys (Skryabin G.N., Aleksandrov V.P., 2007). Pyelonephritis is an inflammatory disease of the kidneys. It is most often caused by Escherichia and Para-Escherichia coli (less often by staphylococci, streptococci, salmonella, viruses, fungi, etc.). Acute pyelonephritis is characterized by fever, weakness, pain in the joints, muscles, lower back, urination disorders (increased frequency, delay, pain). Chronic pyelonephritis often occurs as a result of acute. In some cases, the disease has a latent, latent course, manifested by general weakness, fatigue, slight pain in the lumbar region (Turishchev S.N., 2005). The maximum sales volume of the drug in terms of money based on the results of 2014 was recorded in pharmacies in Kyiv and the Dnipropetrovsk region. The total volume of pharmacy sales of the CANEFRON ® N brand based on the results of 2014 demonstrates a positive trend in monetary terms in almost all regions of Ukraine. Fig. 6 The volume of pharmacy sales of CANEFRON ® N in monetary terms by regions of Ukraine based on the results of 2012–2014. It should be noted the contribution of those regions of Ukraine, in which the growth rate of the drug sales volume significantly exceeded those of the brand as a whole. In 2014, compared to the previous year, in 16 regions of Ukraine, outstripping sales dynamics in monetary terms were recorded compared to the brand as a whole. The maximum growth rates were noted in Kirovohrad, Zaporozhye, Chernihiv and Kherson regions. PROMOTION ACTIVITYOf great importance in the successful market development of a drug is its reputation among healthcare professionals, because often it is a doctor’s prescription or a pharmacist’s recommendation that is a weighty argument in favor of purchasing a particular drug. They are formed under the influence of the marketing activity of the manufacturing company. Given that in the competitive group of drugs G04B X50 **, the company – the manufacturer of CANEPHRON N – Bionorica has consistently held a leading position in terms of pharmacy sales in monetary terms over the past years, it knows how to successfully promote its brand. Bionorica concentrated the lion’s share of its efforts to promote CANEPHRON N on such an important promotion channel as visits by medical representatives to healthcare professionals. It is important to note that for several years the company has been leading the rating of marketing organizations in terms of the number of memories of healthcare professionals about promotions for drugs of the G04B X50** group through visits by medical representatives (Table 3).
The maximum share in the total number of memories of doctors of various specialties about the promotion of the CANEFRON brand ® H is occupied by gynecologists (34.8%) and urologists (33%) through the visits of medical representatives in 2014. In addition to the target audience of physicians (urologists, gynecologists), information about the pharmacotherapeutic properties of the drug CANEFRON ® N is received by doctors of other specialties – pediatricians, general practitioners / family doctors and other specialists. PHARMACY STOCKToday, in the conditions of high competition in the pharmacy business, consumer loyalty is formed not only by the pricing policy of retail outlets, discounts, promotions, but also by the availability of the drug in the required quantity. Given the active market development of the drug CANEFRON ® H, it is advisable to take care of a sufficient stock of the drug and prevent its defects. The needs of retail outlets in the inventory of medicines may vary depending on the type of pharmacy and the amount of revenue. You can plan inventory based on an analysis of the sales volume of the drug in various pharmacies. When conducting an analysis for pharmacies, the categories of outlets (pharmacy, pharmacy) and their financial characteristics were taken into account. When forming groups of outlets by financial characteristics, we used data for March 2014. When planning a commodity stock, a number of external and internal factors should be taken into account that affect the needs and sales opportunities at retail outlets, including their format (pharmacies, pharmacy points) and financial characteristics. In this publication, data on the retail sales of the drug CANEFRON ® N for February 2015 were taken as a basis. The average number of sold packages of CANEPHRON N varies depending on the size of the outlet’s turnover. On average, Ukrainian pharmacies sell from 2 to 14 packages of CANEFRON ® N. In tab. Table 4 provides recommendations on the size of the monthly inventory of the drug CANEFRON ® N, formed on the basis of data on its implementation in pharmacies with different financial characteristics in February 2015.
P.S. Herbal preparations, which include the combined preparation CANEFRON ® H, have already gained confidence among Ukrainian consumers and professional audiences. Successful market dynamics, a leading position in a competitive environment only confirm the demand for the drug CANEFRON ® N and its successful development in the domestic pharmaceutical market in the segment G04B X50 ** “Various drugs, including combinations”. Today CANEPHRON ® N has a strong market position and continues to develop. The drug CANEFRON ® N has a complex effect: anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antimicrobial, nephroprotective, antispasmodic (eliminates spasm of the urinary tract). The favorable safety profile of the drug allows its use not only in adults, but also in children (over the age of 1 year), as well as in pregnant women under medical supervision after assessing the risk/benefit ratio. Ekaterina Dmitrik development of the PROJECT PHYTOTEKA® / PHYTOTHEK ® The Bionorica company pays great attention to the development of the Phytothek ® / Phytothek ® project, the purpose of which is to attract the attention of Ukrainian consumers to high-quality herbal medicines and to form a culture of treatment with over-the-counter drugs.
