Diagnosis of Plantar Warts

In most cases, your doctor can diagnose a plantar wart using one or more of these techniques:

  • Examining the lesion
  • Paring the lesion with a scalpel and checking for signs of dark, pinpoint dots — tiny clotted blood vessels
  • Removing a small section of the lesion (shave biopsy) and sending it to a laboratory for analysis

Treatment Options for Plantar Warts

Most plantar warts are harmless and go away without treatment, though it may take a year or two. If your warts are painful or spreading, you may want to try treating them with over-the-counter (nonprescription) medications or home remedies. You may need many repeated treatments before the warts go away, and they may return later.

If your self-care approaches haven’t helped, talk with your doctor about these treatments:

  • Stronger peeling medicine (salicylic acid): Prescription-strength wart medications with salicylic acid work by removing layers of a wart a little bit at a time. They may also stimulate your immune system’s ability to fight the wart.
  • Freezing medicine (cryotherapy): Cryotherapy done at a doctor’s office involves applying liquid nitrogen to the wart, either with a spray or a cotton swab. This method can be painful, so your doctor may numb the area first.
  • Other acids: Your doctor shaves the surface of the wart and applies trichloroacetic acid with a wooden toothpick. You’ll need to return to the doctor’s office for repeat treatments every week or so.
  • Immune therapy: This method uses medications or solutions to stimulate your immune system to fight viral warts.
  • Minor surgery: Your doctor cuts away the wart or destroys it by using an electric needle (electrodesiccation and curettage).
  • Laser treatment: Pulsed-dye laser treatment burns closed (cauterizes) tiny blood vessels. The infected tissue eventually dies, and the wart falls off.
  • Vaccine: HPV vaccine has been used with success to treat warts even though this vaccine is not specifically targeted toward the wart virus that causes the majority of plantar warts.

Home Remedies for Warts on Toes

Many people have removed warts with these self-care tips:

  • Peeling medicine (salicylic acid): Nonprescription wart removal products are available as a patch or liquid.
  • Freezing medicine (cryotherapy): Nonprescription medicines that freeze the wart include Compound W Freeze Off and Dr. Scholl’s Freeze Away.
  • Duct tape: Covering the wart with silver duct tape, changing it every few days, and soaking and gently removing dead tissue between applications.

Causes of Warts on Toes

What causes warts on toes? Warts are caused by a virus called the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are over 100 different types of HPV, and some are more likely to cause warts on the feet, including plantar warts.

Plantar warts often develop on pressure points on the soles of the feet, such as the heels or balls of the feet. They can be single or multiple, and they may spread to other areas of the feet or body.

Types of Warts on Toes

The main types of warts that can occur on the toes include:

  • Plantar warts: These warts develop on the soles of the feet and can be painful due to the pressure on them.
  • Common warts: These warts can occur on the toes and other areas of the body. They have a rough, irregular surface.
  • Filiform warts: These wart
    s have a long, thread-like appearance and can develop on the toes or other areas of the face and body.
  • Periungual warts: These warts develop around the nails and can interfere with normal nail growth.

Removing Warts on Toes

How can warts on toes be removed? There are several options for removing warts on the toes:

  • Over-the-counter wart removal products containing salicylic acid or cryotherapy (freezing)
  • Prescription-strength peeling medicines or cryotherapy from a doctor
  • Other treatments like acid applications, immune therapy, minor surgery, or laser treatment, if other methods haven’t worked

It’s important to be patient and persistent, as warts can be stubborn and may require multiple treatments before they are fully removed.

Preventing Warts on Toes

What can be done to prevent warts on the toes? Some tips for preventing warts include:

  • Avoiding direct contact with warts on others
  • Keeping your feet clean and dry
  • Wearing appropriate footwear in public areas like pools and locker rooms
  • Not picking at or scratching warts, which can spread the infection
  • Strengthening your immune system through a healthy lifestyle

By following these preventive measures and seeking prompt treatment if warts do develop, you can help manage and control warts on your toes.

Plantar warts – Diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis

In most cases, your doctor can diagnose a plantar wart with one or more of these techniques:

  • Examining the lesion
  • Paring the lesion with a scalpel and checking for signs of dark, pinpoint dots — tiny clotted blood vessels
  • Removing a small section of the lesion (shave biopsy) and sending it to a laboratory for analysis

Treatment

Most plantar warts are harmless and go away without treatment, though it may take a year or two. If your warts are painful or spreading, you may want to try treating them with over-the-counter (nonprescription) medications or home remedies. You may need many repeated treatments before the warts go away, and they may return later.

If your self-care approaches haven’t helped, talk with your doctor about these treatments:

  • Stronger peeling medicine (salicylic acid). Prescription-strength wart medications with salicylic acid work by removing layers of a wart a little bit at a time. They may also stimulate your immune system’s ability to fight the wart.

    Your doctor will likely suggest you apply the medicine regularly at home, followed by occasional office visits.

  • Freezing medicine (cryotherapy). Cryotherapy done at a doctor’s office involves applying liquid nitrogen to the wart, either with a spray or a cotton swab. This method can be painful, so your doctor may numb the area first.

    The chemical causes a blister to form around your wart, and the dead tissue sloughs off within a week or so. Cryotherapy may also stimulate your immune system to fight viral warts. You may need to return to the doctor’s office for repeat treatments every two to four weeks until the wart disappears.

    Some studies suggest that cryotherapy combined with salicylic acid treatment is more effective than just cryotherapy, but further study is needed.

Surgical or other procedures

If salicylic acid and freezing medicine don’t work, your doctor may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

  • Other acids. Your doctor shaves the surface of the wart and applies trichloroacetic acid with a wooden toothpick. You’ll need to return to the doctor’s office for repeat treatments every week or so. Side effects include burning and stinging. Between visits, you may be asked to apply salicylic acid to the wart.
  • Immune therapy. This method uses medications or solutions to stimulate your immune system to fight viral warts. Your doctor may inject your warts with a foreign substance (antigen) or apply a solution or cream to the warts.
  • Minor surgery. Your doctor cuts away the wart or destroys it by using an electric needle (electrodesiccation and curettage). This procedure can be painful, so your doctor will numb your skin first. Because surgery has a risk of scarring, this method usually isn’t used to treat plantar warts unless other treatments have failed.
  • Laser treatment. Pulsed-dye laser treatment burns closed (cauterizes) tiny blood vessels. The infected tissue eventually dies, and the wart falls off. This method requires repeat treatments every three to four weeks. The evidence for the effectiveness of this method is limited, and it can cause pain and potentially scarring.
  • Vaccine. HPV vaccine has been used with success to treat warts even though this vaccine is not specifically targeted toward the wart virus that causes the majority of plantar warts.

Lifestyle and home remedies

Many people have removed warts with these self-care tips:

  • Peeling medicine (salicylic acid). Nonprescription wart removal products are available as a patch or liquid. Usually, you’re instructed to wash the site, soak it in warm water, and gently remove the top layer of softened skin with a pumice stone or emery board. Then after the skin has dried, you apply the solution or patch. Patches are usually changed every 24 to 48 hours. Liquid applications are generally used daily. You may need repeated applications on a regular basis over several weeks to months to see results.
  • Freezing medicine (cryotherapy). Nonprescription medicines that freeze the wart include Compound W Freeze Off and Dr. Scholl’s Freeze Away. The Food and Drug Administration cautions that some wart removers are flammable and shouldn’t be used around fire, flame, heat sources (such as curling irons) and lit cigarettes.
  • Duct tape. Using duct tape to remove warts is a harmless but unproven approach. To try it, cover the wart with silver duct tape, changing it every few days. Between applications, soak the wart and gently remove dead tissue with a pumice stone or emery board. Then leave the wart open to the air to dry for a few hours before covering it with tape again.

Preparing for your appointment

You’ll likely start by seeing your primary care doctor. He or she may refer you to a specialist in disorders of the skin (dermatologist) or feet (podiatrist). The following tips can help you prepare for your appointment.

What you can do

Bring a list of all medications you take regularly — including over-the-counter (nonprescription) medications and dietary supplements — and the daily dosage of each.

You may also want to list questions for your doctor, such as:

  • If I have a plantar wart, can I start with at-home care?
  • If I proceed with home treatment, under what conditions should I call you?
  • If the first treatment doesn’t work, what will we try next?
  • If the lesion isn’t a plantar wart, what tests do you need to do?
  • How long will it take to get results?
  • How can I prevent warts?

What to expect from your doctor

Your doctor may ask you questions such as:

  • When did the lesion first appear?
  • Has it changed in size or appearance?
  • Is your condition painful?
  • Have you had warts before?
  • Do you have diabetes or poor sensation in your feet?
  • Do you have any condition or take any medication that has weakened your ability to fight disease (immune response)?
  • Have you tried any home remedies? If so, how long have you used them and have they helped?
  • Do you use a swimming pool or locker room — places that can harbor wart-causing viruses?

What you can do in the meantime

If you’re sure you have a plantar wart, you may try over-the-counter remedies or alternative medicine approaches. But talk with your doctor before trying self-care treatments if you have:

  • Diabetes
  • Poor sensation in your feet
  • Weakened immunity

If pressure on the wart causes pain, try wearing well-cushioned shoes, such as athletic shoes that evenly support the sole and relieve some of the pressure. Avoid wearing uncomfortable shoes.

Warts: Causes, types, and treatments

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Here’s our process.

A wart is a small growth with a rough texture that can appear anywhere on the body. It can look like a solid blister or a small cauliflower.

Warts are caused by viruses in the human papillomavirus (HPV) family.

The appearance of a wart depends on its location on the body and the thickness of the skin.

Palmar warts appear on the hand. Plantar warts affect the feet.

As many as 1 in 3 children and teenagers are estimated to have warts, but only 3 to 5 percent of adults. This is probably because the immune system becomes better able to prevent their development over time.

People with a weakened immune system are more likely to have warts.

Fast facts on warts

  • A wart is a small growth on the skin that may look like a solid blister or a small cauliflower.
  • Types of wart include common warts, flat warts, pigmented warts, and plantar warts.
  • Black dots in the wart are blood vessels that can lead to bleeding.
  • Most warts disappear in 1 to 5 years without medical treatment, but treatment is available for warts that are large, numerous, or in sensitive areas.
  • Treatments include salicylic acid, duct tape, cryotherapy, surgery, laser treatment, electrocautery, photodynamic therapy, chemical treatments, topical creams, cantharidin, and antigen shots.
  • Warts or verrucae should be covered up with a waterproof Band-Aid when swimming.

Most warts clear up without treatment. It can take from a few weeks to several years, depending on the location and number of warts. They usually disappear faster in children.

One third of children are estimated to have warts, but studies have found that 50 percent of these disappear within a year, and 70 percent are gone after 2 years.

However, if they do not disappear, or if a wart causes concern, medical help is available.

A doctor will examine the wart, they may ask about family history, and they may take some tissue for tests.

What treatments are available?

All wart treatments are designed to irritate the skin and get the body’s own infection-fighting cells to clear the warts.

Salicylic acid

Most over-the-counter creams, gels, paints, and medicated Band-Aids contain salicylic acid.

It is important to protect the skin around the wart before applying this treatment because salicylic acid may destroy healthy skin. Do not apply to the face.

Applying petroleum jelly or a corn plaster to the skin around the wart can protect it from damage.

Some tips can enhance the effectiveness of this treatment.

  • Soften the wart by rubbing dead tissue from the surface of the wart weekly using a pumice stone or emery board. Make sure that the pumice stone or emery board is not used on any other part of the body or by another person.
  • Before applying the medication, soak the wart in water for about 5 minutes.

Treatment is normally applied daily for about 3 months. If the skin becomes sore, treatment should be stopped.

There is a selection of salicylic acid available for purchase online.

Cryotherapy

Freezing liquid, often nitrogen, is sprayed onto the wart, destroying the cells. A blister develops, which eventually scabs and falls off a week or so later.

This treatment must be carried out by a healthcare professional. If the wart is large, this may require a local anesthetic and several sessions.

Pharmacies sell dimethyl-ether or propane spray for self-administration. These should not be used on the face, and they are less effective than cryotherapy that is carried out by a qualified professional.

Surgery

This not common for warts, and there is a risk of scarring. Warts that resolve by themselves do not scar.

Sometimes a doctor may recommend surgery if other treatments have not worked.

Most warts can be shaved off with a surgical razor under local anesthesia.

Doctors may recommend applying a topical cream to the site even after the wart’s removal, to improve the chances of it clearing.

Laser treatment uses a precise laser beam to destroy the wart.

Cantharidin

A doctor may apply a substance containing an extract from an insect called a blister beetle and other chemicals to the warts. The area is then covered with a bandage.

This is painless, but it creates a blister that may be uncomfortable. The blister lifts the wart from the skin, and the doctor removes the dead part of the wart.

Candida antigen shots

The human immune system does not notice a wart, but if the system is stimulated locally, some activated immune cells in the area will recognize it and take action. This procedure leaves no scarring.

This treatment may not be suitable during pregnancy.

Other treatments

If warts do not respond to standard treatments, a dermatologist, or skin specialist, may offer other options.

  • Immunotherapy attempts to make the patient’s immune system destroy the warts
  • Bleomycin, or Blenoxane, can be injected into the wart to kill the virus. Bleomycin is also used for treating some types of cancer.
  • Retinoids, derived from vitamin A, disrupt the wart’s skin cell growth.
  • Antibiotics are only effective in the case of infection.

Common warts, especially around the fingernails and toenails, may be difficult to eliminate completely or permanently.

If the wart is gone but the virus remains, warts may recur.

The following are the most common types of wart.

Common warts, or verruca vulgaris

Common warts have a firm, raised, rough surface and may appear cauliflower-like.

They can occur anywhere, but they are most common on the knuckles, fingers, elbows, knees, and any area with broken skin.

Clotted blood vessels are often visible in common warts as small, darkened spots. These are known as seed warts.

Plantar warts

Painful verrucae appear on the soles of the feet, heels, and toes.

They usually grow into the skin because the person’s weight pushes onto the sole of the foot. They normally have a small central black dot surrounded by hard, white tissue. Plantar warts are often difficult to clear.

Plane warts, or verruca plana

Plane warts are round, flat, and smooth. They can be yellowish, brownish, or skin colored.

Also known as flat warts, they grow most often on sun-exposed areas.

They tend to grow in larger numbers, possibly between 20 and 100. However, of all wart types, they are most likely to disappear without treatment.

Filiform warts, or verruca filiformis

Filiform warts are long and thin in shape. They can grow rapidly on the eyelids, neck, and armpits.

Mosaic warts

Mosaic warts are multiple plantar warts in a large cluster.

Unlike moles, warts are often the same color as the person’s skin. Warts do not contain pus unless they become infected.

If infection occurs, they may require treatment with antibiotics.

When should I see a doctor?

It is a good idea to see a doctor if the wart:

  • causes pain
  • bleeds easily
  • changes appearance
  • spreads easily to other parts of the body
  • comes back after prior removal
  • appears in an area that leads to constant bumping and bleeding so as to affect daily activities, such as shaving, sports, and so on

Individuals who want the wart removed for cosmetic reasons should see a doctor.

Insurance is unlikely to fund cosmetic treatment, but primary care physicians, dermatologists, and podiatrists can all treat warts.

Share on PinterestVerrucas and plantar warts can be treated by creams containing salycylic acid.

HPV viruses cause the excessive and rapid growth of keratin, which is a hard protein on the top layer of the skin.

Different HPV strains cause different warts. The wart-causing virus can be passed on by close skin-to-skin contact, and through contact with towels or shoes.

The virus can spread to other parts of the body through:

  • scratching or biting a wart
  • sucking fingers
  • biting fingernails, if there are warts around the nails
  • shaving the face or legs

Having wet or damaged skin, and coming into contact with rough surfaces increase the risk of infection.

For example, a person with scratches or cuts on the soles of their feet is more likely to develop a verruca in and around public swimming pools.

Wearing shower shoes or flip flops while using public showers or walking near public swimming pools can help prevent this.

The risk of catching warts from another person is low, but they can be passed on, especially if the person has a compromised immune system. This includes people with HIV or AIDS, and those using immunosuppressants following a transplant.

Genital warts are more contagious.

Handling meat as an occupation will also increase the risk of contracting warts. A study carried out by the American Academy of Family Physicians showed that 33 percent of slaughterhouse workers and 34 percent of retail butchers have warts on the hand.

Genital warts

Most warts are harmless, but some strains of HPV can cause warts on, in, or around the genitals.

These warts can be more serious. In women, they can potentially lead to cervical, anal, and vulvovaginal cancer.

In men, anal cancer and cancer of the glans penis can also occur as a result of infection with some types of genital warts.

Anyone who develops genital warts should see their doctor for assessment.

Home remedies for warts in the past have included rubbing a dusty, dry toad on them.

Other suggestions are:

Hypnosis: Case studies have suggested that hypnosis may help remove warts. If this does work, it could be that the treatment somehow stimulates the immune system to fight against the virus that causes the warts. However, more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness.

Garlic: Compounds found in garlic may have antiviral activity and help stop viral cells from growing. Chloroform garlic extracts applied to warts are reported to have clear the growths in 3 to 4 months. Whether rubbing garlic on a wart will have the same effect is not confirmed.

Duct tape: In one study, a piece of duct tape the same size as the wart was placed directly onto the wart, and removed after 6 days. Next, the participants soaked the wart in water, before rubbing it with an emery board or pumice stone. They then left the open until the next day. They repeated the cycle for up to 2 months. In 85 percent of cases, the wart disappeared, compared with 60 percent of warts treated by cryotherapy in another group. This is not an evidence-based treatment, but it may be useful for children, as it is painless and safe.

To reduce the risk of catching or spreading warts:

  • Do not touch other people’s warts.
  • Do not use other people’s towels, washcloths, or other personal items.
  • Do not share shoes and socks with other people.
  • Do not scratch warts or verrucae, as this can cause them to spread.
  • Wear sandals when entering and exiting communal showers and pools.
  • Cover warts or verrucae with a waterproof covering when swimming, and socks or gloves elsewhere, for example at the gym.
  • Do not brush, comb, shave, or clip hair in areas that have warts.
  • When filing or cutting nails do not use the same utensil on the infected nail and the healthy nails.
  • Do not bite fingernails if warts are near them.
  • Keep hands as dry as possible.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after touching a wart.

Warts are common, and they can cause embarrassment. May disappear alone, but if they do not, treatment can often help eliminate them.

Plantar Warts | DuPage Medical Group

Most plantar warts aren’t a serious health concern, but they may be bothersome or painful, and they can be resistant to treatment. You may need to see your Podiatrist to treat and remove plantar warts.

Signs and Symptoms

Plantar warts are often mistaken for corns or calluses. To make the distinction, look for:

  • Small, fleshy, grainy bumps on the soles of your feet
  • Hard, flat growths with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries
  • Gray or brown lumps with one or more black pinpoints, which are actually small, clotted blood vessels, not “wart seeds”
  • Bumps that interrupt the normal lines and ridges in the skin of your feet

Causes

You acquire warts through direct contact with the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are more than 100 types of HPV. Some types of HPV tend to cause warts on your hands, fingers or near your fingernails. Others tend to cause warts on your feet.

The virus that causes plantar warts isn’t highly contagious, but it thrives in warm, moist environments, such as shower floors, locker rooms and public swimming areas. So you may contract the virus by walking barefoot in public places.

Like other infectious diseases, HPV may also pass from person to person. If you have a plantar wart, you can even spread the virus to other places on your own foot by touching or scratching. The virus can also spread by contact with skin shed from a wart.

Each person’s immune system responds to warts differently, so not everyone who comes in contact with HPV develops warts.

Risk factors

Plantar warts are more likely to appear on the feet of people with:

  • Multiple exposures to the virus
  • Damaged or cut skin
  • Sweaty skin

For reasons doctors don’t understand, some people are more susceptible to the wart-causing virus, just as some people are more likely to catch a cold. Children and teenagers tend to be especially vulnerable to plantar warts.

When to seek medical advice

See your doctor if warts persist, multiply or recur, despite home treatment, or if warts interfere with your activities. Also see your doctor if your warts are painful or change in appearance or color. If you have diabetes or a circulatory disorder, don’t try to treat any plantar warts at home. Seek treatment from your doctor.

In some cases, you may need to consult your doctor to ensure a correct diagnosis. It’s possible for more serious lesions to appear on your feet, including cancerous tumors called carcinomas and melanomas.

Diagnosis

In most cases, your doctor can diagnose plantar warts just by inspecting your feet. If there’s any doubt, your doctor may need to pare down the lump with a scalpel. Why? Corns and calluses don’t have a blood supply and won’t bleed, while plantar warts will show signs of pinpoint bleeding from their dark dots, which are really blood vessels.

If there’s still doubt about the diagnosis, your doctor may take a sample of your foot tissue and send it to a laboratory for analysis.

Complications

Plantar warts can be persistent. They can shed the virus into the skin of your foot before they’re treated, prompting new warts to grow as fast as the old ones disappear. The best defense is to treat new warts as quickly as possible so that they have little time to spread.

If untreated, warts can swell to an inch or more in circumference and they can spread, developing into clusters of warts called mosaic warts. They may also become extremely painful. If you have lots of plantar warts, the pain may make it difficult for you to walk or run.

Treatment

Plantar warts usually need some type of treatment. Warts on the feet can be particularly persistent and difficult to treat. Unless you have an impaired immune system or diabetes or are pregnant, there’s no reason you can’t try to treat warts with over-the-counter remedies. But you may wish to consult your doctor for additional help.

No wart treatment works 100 percent of the time. In general, your doctor will recommend the least painful — and least destructive — methods first, especially for children.

Common treatments for simple plantar warts

Your doctor may suggest trying these common treatments one at a time or in combination:

  • Over the Counter Salicylic acid Wart medications and patches are available at drugstores. To treat plantar warts, you’ll need a salicylic acid solution or patch which peels off the infected skin a little bit at a time. Apply the solution once or twice each day, being careful to avoid healthy skin, which can become irritated from the acid. In between applications, pare away the dead skin and wart tissue using a pumice stone or emery board. You may need to repeat this process for up to three or four weeks to completely eliminate warts.
  • Duct tape In a well-publicized 2002 study, duct tape wiped out more warts than freezing (cryotherapy) did. Study participants who used “duct tape therapy” covered their warts in duct tape for six days, then soaked their warts in water, and gently rubbed warts with an emery board or pumice stone. They repeated this process for up to two months or until their warts went away. Researchers hypothesize that this unconventional therapy may work by irritating warts and the surrounding skin, prompting the body’s immune system to attack. Today, duct tape is commonly used to treat warts, especially for children who may find freezing painful or scary. It’s often combined with salicylic acid.
  • Freezing (cryotherapy) Freezing is one of the most common treatments for plantar warts and is sometimes effective, but may require multiple trips to your doctor every two to four weeks. Your doctor can apply liquid nitrogen with a spray canister or cotton-tipped applicator. The chemical causes a blister to form around your wart, and the dead tissue sloughs off within a week or so. Freezing isn’t commonly used in young children because it can be painful.
  • Cantharidin Doctors and healers have used cantharidin — a substance extracted from the blister beetle — to treat warts for centuries. Your doctor paints this beetle juice onto your wart and covers it with clear tape. The application is initially painless, but it causes the skin under the wart to blister, lifting the wart off the skin. Your doctor can then clip away the dead part of the wart in about a week. Sometimes the blisters are painful but this is of the most effective treatments available.

Aggressive treatments for persistent plantar warts

If your warts don’t respond to common treatments, your doctor may suggest one or more of these other options. Please note each of these treatments has a chance of reoccurrence as well.

Minor surgery This involves cutting away the wart or destroying the wart by using an electric needle in a process called electrodesiccation and curettage. This treatment is effective, but may leave a scar if not done carefully. Your doctor will anesthetize your skin before this procedure.

Laser surgery Doctors can use several types of lasers to eliminate stubborn warts. Surgical and non-surgical types require multiple treatments as well. The effectiveness may vary among patients.

Other medications In severe cases that haven’t cleared with other therapies, your doctor may inject each wart with a medication called bleomycin, which kills the virus. This medication is given systemically in higher doses to treat some kinds of cancer. The injections for wart treatment can be painful and can cause rashes or itching. They’re not used if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding or if you have circulation problems, and used in very extreme circumstances.

Prevention

To reduce your risk of plantar warts:

  • Avoid direct contact with warts. This includes your own warts.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry. Change your shoes and socks daily.
  • Don’t go barefoot in public areas. Wear shoes or sandals in public pools and locker rooms.
  • Don’t pick at warts. Picking may spread the virus.

Treatment for plantar warts – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

What are plantar warts?

Plantar warts are small growths on the bottoms of your feet, and they are contagious (spread easily from person to person). They are caused by infection with a virus. Your child is more likely to get the virus if he has a weak immune system. Having cancer or another disease treated at St. Jude, or getting treatment such as chemotherapy, can weaken your child’s immune system.

The virus that causes plantar warts is not life threatening, but the warts can be hard to get rid of. The doctor might need to try more than one (1) treatment.

How are plantar warts treated?

There are several different ways to treat plantar warts. These include:

  • Putting a mild acid called salicylic acid on the wart,
  • Putting a strong medicine called cantharidin on the wart, and
  • Having minor surgery to take off the wart.

At the St. Jude Podiatry Clinic, the doctor usually does cantharidin treatment first. This treatment is inexpensive and usually works. If it does not work, the doctor might do minor surgery to take off your child’s wart.

About cantharidin treatment

Cantharidin treatment is done at the St. Jude Podiatry Clinic. The doctor puts a strong medicine called cantharidin on the wart and covers it with a bandage. Your child can do normal activities after treatment, but should not take a bath or shower for 24 hours or until told to do so.

On the third day after the treatment, put a piece of duct tape over the place that was treated. Use the silver duct tape because it sticks better than the clear kind. If the tape falls off, put on a new piece. Keep the treated area covered with duct tape.

Bring your child back to the St. Jude Podiatry Clinic 10 to 14 days after the cantharidin treatment. The doctor will check the foot and do any other treatments your child needs.

About minor surgery for plantar warts

If cantharidin treatment does not work, the doctor might do minor surgery to take off the wart. This is done at the St. Jude Podiatry Clinic.

First, your child gets an injection (shot) to numb his foot. Then the doctor uses a small blade to take off the wart. After that, your child’s foot is bandaged, and you can leave the clinic.

After the wart is taken off, your child should:

  • Keep the bandage on all day,
  • Rest with his foot up for the rest of the day, and
  • Use the medicine given by the doctor if needed.

You can take off your child’s bandage the next morning, and he can take a shower or bath. After that, put antibiotic ointment on the place where the wart was taken off. Cover it with a self-stick bandage, but not too tightly. If the bandage falls off, you can put on a new one.

Keep using the antibiotic ointment and bandages until your child’s next appointment at the St. Jude Podiatry Clinic.

Ways to prevent plantar warts

To help prevent plantar warts, your child should:

  • Wash his hands and feet well,
  • Dry the area between the toes completely, and
  • Wear sandals or flip-flops in locker rooms, public showers, and other public places.

Discuss other ways to keep your child’s feet dry with the doctor,

If family members have warts, they should seek medical treatment.

Keep your child from sharing shoes with other children and picking at any warts he has. Doing these things can spread the virus that causes plantar warts. After your child receives the last treatment at the St. Jude Podiatry Clinic, use disinfectant to clean anything your child walks on with bare feet, such as the shower, carpets, and floor. Also, disinfect your child’s shoes. Use Lysol® spray to disinfect carpets and shoes, and use a cleaner with bleach in the shower.

Symptoms & Treatment for Children

Symptoms

There are several types of warts:

  • Filiform warts − look like small “skin tags.” They often show up on areas such as the eyelids and around the mouth and nose.
  • Common warts − look like rough bumps on the skin. They are often seen on the hands but can be seen anywhere on the skin. They may bleed if picked at.
  • Plantar warts − look like rough patches on the soles of the feet. They are often painful and can grow very large.
  • Flat warts − look like very small flat, smooth bumps. They are often seen on the face.

Treatment

Most warts go away on their own within several months to years, so treatment may not be needed for many children. In general, surgical excision and cautery are no longer recommended in most instances or covered by insurance plans, as they have been shown to increase the likelihood of localized spread. There is no treatment guaranteed to cure warts. If your primary care provider recommends treatment, it is important that you follow the instructions exactly as suggested. In general, using two or more treatments at a time is more likely to be successful.

Initial treatment with topical salicylic acid and medical tape is usually recommended. Solutions of 17 percent salicylic acid are readily available over-the-counter (Compound W, etc.). First, soak warts for 5 minutes in hot water (no hotter than 110° F). Pat area dry with towel. Gently file down the wart by removing layers of dead skin with a callus file, emery board or pumice stone. Remember to use only the file or pumice stone on the wart and not on other skin areas in order to prevent spreading the warts. Then the 17 percent salicylic acid should be applied to completely cover the wart.  Once the salicylic acid 17 percent is dry, the wart should be covered with air-tight, white cloth surgical tape (may also be purchased at a drug store / pharmacy). You may also use household duct tape. Every 1 to 3 days when the tape loosens or falls off, it should be removed and more 17 percent salicylic acid and tape applied until the wart is gone. If the treated skin gets irritated, stop treatment for a few days until the skin feels better, then restart if the wart is still present. Be patient! Treatment may take several months. It is important to remain consistent with treatment for best results.

Sometimes, once one or a few warts start to go away, any other warts present will also soon go away.

Referral to a Specialist

Most warts in children can be managed by your primary care provider with the treatment described above or with watchful waiting without any treatment.

Referral to a specialist is generally only indicated for warts that are causing significant pain or discomfort and that have not responded to several months of consistent treatment as recommended by your primary care provider.

Your specialist may discuss these treatment options with you:

  • Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen), also known as “freezing”
  • Topical cantharidin application
  • Candida antigen injections

Plantar Wart Home Remedies:The Ugly Truth

Plantar wart is a common medical condition of the foot. It is the result of a viral infection caused by the Human PapillomaVirus (HPV). The HPV virus is highly contagious. You can easily get an infection just by walking barefoot in public such as gyms, pools, and locker rooms. If you have the infection, your first option is to try a few plantar wart home remedies with household items such as:

  • apple cider vinegar
  • duct tape
  • tea tree oil and
  • salicylic acid

While most people have found these home remedies excellent for plantar wart removal, most doctors don’t recommend them. Here’s why.

Information About 4 Plantar Wart Home Remedies

Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar is known as a household disinfectant as well as a method to preserve food. It also one of the oldest known home remedies for various skin disorders. And for this reason, people began using apple cider vinegar to treat warts.

How to use apple cider vinegar for plantar wart removal

There are a couple of methods to treat plantar warts with apple cider vinegar. The first method involves using:

  • apple cider vinegar
  • water
  • a cotton ball and
  • a bandage or duct tape
  1. Mix one-part water with two parts of apple cider vinegar.
  2. Soak the cotton ball on the mixture and apply directly to the affected part of your foot.
  3. Cover the cotton ball with a bandage or tape. On the next day, remove the cotton ball and toss it away.
  4. Repeat this procedure every night until your plantar wart falls off.

The second method involves soaking your affected foot in a mixture of water and vinegar.

  1. Mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar in a large container or bucket.
  2. Submerge your affected foot for about 15 minutes every day.
  3. Repeat this procedure every day until the wart peels off.

Note that vinegar contains between 4% to 8% acetic acid. Apple cider vinegar is a weak acid that can kill some types of viruses and bacteria.

Still, vinegar and other weak acids can cause chemical burns on your skin. And so, it is necessary to dilute the vinegar in water. Always apply the mixture of water and vinegar on your skin to avoid pain or burning sensation.

What do studies say about apple cider vinegar?

Do not ingest or apply apple cider vinegar on the skin to combat viral infections. Scientific studies show no evidence of using vinegar as an anti-infective agent against viral infections.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is the main ingredient in many over-the-counter (OTC) skin treatment products. The salicylic acid found in ointments and creams is usually in higher concentrations.

Salicylic acid for plantar wart treatment comes in pad format, liquid, patch, and gel. These products aid in the shedding of the skin around the wart.

How to use Salicylic acid for plantar wart removal

Here’s the usual procedure of using salicylic acid for treating warts:

  1. Wash the affected area.
  2. Soak the area in warm water.
  3. Using a pumice stone or emery board, gently remove the top layer of the softened skin.
  4. Wait for the skin to dry before applying your salicylic acid solution.

Patches

If you’re using the patches, don’t forget to change them every 24 to 48 hours. Be careful when using the patches. They have higher salicylic acid concentrations than liquids. Aggressive treatment of warts may cause infection to the affected area.

Liquids

Apply liquid salicylic acid every day. You need to repeat the application for several weeks. In some cases, it may take several months to see the results.

There are times you may feel soreness or pain on the skin around the wart. Pause the treatment and then start again a few days later.

What do studies say about Salicylic acid?

Non-prescription salicylic products may help to dry out your plantar wart. And, may eventually lead to wart removal.

The American Academy of Dermatology or AAD recommends changing the tape every 48 hours to speed up the healing process. The wart may completely disappear after repeated application.

Many people have successfully removed their warts using salicylic acid. Yet, there is not enough scientific studies confirming its effectiveness.

Duct Tape

Using duct tape is one of the most well-known plantar wart home remedies. The idea behind it is that duct tape can help “peel away” wart layers until the HPV virus infection disappears.

How to use duct tape for plantar wart removal

Here are a few steps of using duct tapes to remove plantar warts:

  1. Cut a small piece of duct tape slightly larger than the size of your wart so you can grip to rip it off later.
  2. Stick the tape into the affected area covering the wart.
  3. Leave the tape on the for a couple of days and then take it off.
  4. Soak the affected area in warm water. And then, gently remove the dead layers of tissue using an emery board or pumice stone. Allow the affected area to dry before sticking the tape.
  5. Repeat the process until the wart layers come off.
What do studies say about duct tape?

Duct tapes have many uses for crafting and also as a tool with endless uses around the house. But many people have been using them as a topical treatment for warts as well.

Although a harmless practice, there are no scientific studies that prove using duct tape is effective at getting rid of warts.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is one of the oldest home remedies people use to treat skin problems such as acne, wounds, and fungal infections. Since tea tree oil is known for its many healing properties, it may also work for all types of warts.

How to use tea tree oil for plantar wart removal

To try this remedy:

  1. Dilute tea tree oil in water.
  2. Soak a q-tip into the diluted tea tree oil solution.
  3. Apply a small amount of the solution into the wart. Do this treatment twice a day.
  4. Repeat the procedure every day until the wart disappears.

Keep in mind that tea tree oil is available in a variety of strengths. And so, you must dilute the tea tree oil in water before applying it directly on your skin. You can also mix it with carrier oils such as olive or almond oil.

What do studies say about tea tree oil?

There is one successful case of using tea tree oil for wart treatment. In a study published in the Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, the affected finger of a child was healed using tea tree oil.

According to the study, the oil was applied to the lesions once a day. The report further stated that warts all disappeared after 12 days of treatment.

Still, it is uncertain whether tea tree oil is effective for plantar wart removal. There are not enough studies to prove its effectiveness to fight all types of warts.

The Bottom Line

Most plantar warts are not harmful and slowly come off without treatment according to the American Academy of Dermatology. But, it may take up to 2 years before warts disappear. The reason you need to treat the lesions with home remedies is to speed up the healing process. The more serious concern here is that it is highly contagious and can spread quickly.

There is no known cure for plantar warts. It is your immune system that resolves the wart, not the home remedies.

Warts don’t go away easily since thick layers of your skin protect the virus. The HPV virus goes undetected by your immune system for several months.

Hence, doctors attack warts with irritants to get your immune system’s attention. Once alerted, your immune system combats the HPV virus and eventually clearing the wart from your affected foot.

There are several ways doctors treat plantar warts in their office. One effective treatment is through cryotherapy. This treatment involves freezing the affected skin using liquid nitrogen at temperatures below -196°C.

The Takeaway on Plantar Wart Home Remedies

If plantar wart home remedies did not work after several months of treatment, you need to see your doctor. He or she may refer you to a specialist in disorders of the feet (podiatrist) or the skin (dermatologist).

Plantar Warts (Symptoms and Treatment)— Foot and Ankle Centers of North Houston — Foot and Ankle Centers of North Houston

The common wart is known as verruca vulgaris. They are caused by a viral infection of the skin. This occurs as a result of direct contact with the virus. They do not spread through the blood stream. They occur more commonly in children than adults. When they occur on the bottom of the foot, they are called plantar warts. This name is derived from the location of the foot on which they are found; the bottom of the foot is called the plantar aspect of the foot. A common misconception is that plantar warts have seeds or roots that grow through the skin and can attach to the bone. The wart may appear to have a root or seeds, but these are in fact small clusters of the wart just beneath the top layer of the skin. The wart cannot live in any tissue except the skin. Moist, sweaty feet can predispose to infection by the wart virus. They can be picked up in showers and around swimming pools. They are not highly contagious, but being exposed in just the right situation will lead to the development of the wart. Avoiding contact in the general environment is nearly impossible. If a member of the family has the infection, care should be taken to keep shower and tile floor clean. Children who have plantar warts should not share their shoes with other people. Young girls often share shoes with their friends and this should be discouraged.

Diagnosis

The warts have the appearance of thick, scaly skin. They can occur as small, single warts or can cluster into large areas. These clustered warts are called mosaic warts. They often resemble plantar calluses. A simple way to tell the difference between a wart and a callous is to squeeze the lesion between your fingers in a pinching fashion. If this is painful, it is likely that the lesion is a wart. A callous is generally not painful with this maneuver but is tender with direct pressure by pressing directly on the lesion. Othe lesions on the bottom of the foot that are often confused with plantars warts are porokeratoses and inclusion cysts.

Treatment

There are a variety of ways to treat warts. The over-the-counter medications have a difficult time penetrating the thick skin on the bottom of the foot, so they do not work well in this area. Professional treatment consists of burning the wart with topical acids, freezing with liquid nitrogen, laser surgery or cutting them out. All methods have the possibility of the wart coming back. Surgical excision of the wart has the highest success rate with a relatively low rate of recurrence. There is some mild discomfort with this procedure and it takes several weeks for the area to completely heal. Normal activity can generally be resumed in a few days depending on the size and number of warts that have been removed. The risks associated with surgical removal of warts are the possibility of infection, or the formation of a scar, which can be painful when weight is applied while walking.

Laser removal of the wart works by burning the wart with a laser beam. The area must be numbed with an anesthetic prior to the procedure. There is little advantage to removing warts with a laser unless the warts are very large (mosaic warts) or there are a large number to be removed. The risks associated with the use of the laser are the same as for cutting the warts out. These risks include infection and the development of a scar after healing. A new type of laser has been developed to treat several different types of skin lesions called the Pulsed Dye Laser. This new laser has promise in the effective treatment of warts.

Freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen is another form of treatment. This form of treatment when the warts are on the bottom of the foot can be very painful and take several days or weeks to heal.

Topical acids can also be a useful means of treating warts. The advantage to this form of treatment is the fact that they are nearly painless and there is no restriction of activity. The down side to this form of treatment is that it frequently requires several treatments and the failure rate is higher than surgical excision of the wart.

90,000 Causes of warts and how to remove them

Wart (papilloma) is a benign neoplasm that appears on the skin due to the ingestion of the papilloma virus. Contagious and transmitted by contact. In addition to their not aesthetics and discomfort, warts can lead to complications. As an example – malignancy of a neoplasm due to the influence of external factors.

The presence of warts is a serious reason to think about the state of health.Typically, the virus infects people with weakened immunity, as well as those who are exposed to constant stress and overwork.

How to recognize a wart?

Wart is a formation on the skin that differs in color from the skin. They are often formed in groups, and the place of localization can be very diverse: palms, face, soles of the feet, etc. To the touch, the formation can be both rough and smooth and flat.

The types of formations depend on the type of papilloma of the virus and their localization:

  • Common (vulgar) – A common, painless, hemispheric lumpy nodule that rises above the surface of the skin.They are distinguished by pronounced borders, the color varies from pink to grayish-white. Most often located on the hands, but can also be found on other parts of the body.
  • Plantar – painful dense formations in the form of a flat plaque, their size can reach up to 4 cm.The color is yellowish or dark gray.
  • Flat (youthful) – usually formed in adolescence, are flat irregular plaques, slightly protruding above the surface of the skin.They appear on the hands, face, knees and the back of the hand, in places of scratches and injuries, their surface quickly coarsens. If it occurs under the nails, they cause noticeable discomfort.
  • Filiform (acrochords) – elongated cylindrical formations, initially similar to cones. They gradually increase and take on a threadlike shape. Elastic and soft to the touch, the color ranges from flesh to yellowish. They appear more often in the elderly.
  • Butcher’s warts are typical for people who are constantly in contact with raw meat.Elbows and hands are usually affected, and the virus enters through small lesions on the skin. They are painless convex formations, color from white to light brown.
  • Genital warts (anogenital warts) are benign growths similar to cauliflower. Soft to the touch, pinkish color. Formed on the genital mucosa, sometimes on the tongue and the inside of the cheeks. They grow into groups very quickly.
  • Senile (seborrheic keratosis) – growth of the stratum corneum, the only type that does not arise from the papilloma virus.Formations are formed in several stages. Yellow-brown spots appear on the same level with the surface of the skin. Then nodules form, which turn into brown hemispheres with an uneven surface and covered with scales. Gradually, the warts become covered with the cornea and coarsened.

Causes of papillomas

The appearance of warts is associated with the ingestion of the papilloma virus. You can get infected in such cases:

  • direct contact with an infected person – kissing, shaking hands or touching;
  • use of common household items – towels, combs, handrails, exercise equipment, etc.etc .;
  • Wearing someone else’s shoes and walking barefoot in the pool causes the appearance of plantar formations;
  • during sexual intercourse;
  • when epilating or shaving;
  • 90,015 infants can be infected with airway masses from the mother during childbirth.

The source of infection is both a sick person and a carrier without obvious manifestations of the disease. For the virus to enter the body, a small damage to the human skin is enough – cracks, cuts or abrasions.Warts grow in people with weakened immunity, in healthy people, the virus is neutralized and eliminated from the body completely within six months or a year.

Human papillomavirus and warts

The human body is prone to the appearance of papillomas, while the latent period of infection can vary from two weeks to six months. During this period, you can become infected with several types of virus at the same time. Exposure to the environment, interference from outside factors and a decrease in immunity activate the papilloma virus.It increases intensively and manifests itself on the surface of the skin. The factors provoking its appearance include:

  • taking hormonal drugs;
  • frequent stress and overwork;
  • physical exhaustion;
  • vitamin deficiency;
  • gestation period;
  • the presence of severe genetic diseases;
  • menopause period.

When the virus is activated, the warts appear instantly and grow rapidly due to the accelerated growth of the upper layers.The appearance of new warts will not keep you waiting, so they should be treated without delay. Delay in treatment leads to complications. An active effect on the formation in the form of friction, pressure can lead to malignancy – the acquisition of malignancy of the formation.

The disappearance of warts does not mean complete recovery, they can appear again after a certain period of time. Together with the treatment of warts, it is necessary to raise your immunity and take measures to get rid of viral particles.Inflammation or trauma of the wart is an indicator for its removal. And any changes in the condition of the formations (too dark in color, the appearance of inclusions and an increase in size) are a serious reason to visit a doctor.

How to get rid of papilloma?

Treatment and removal of warts in Tula is carried out by specialists dermatologist and oncologist (in case of malignancy), urologist or venereologist (with the appearance of genital formations, warts in the intimate area). The therapy used assumes only an integrated approach with the prescription of vitamin-mineral, sedative and immunity-enhancing drugs.One removal does not serve as an indicator of recovery; after a while, the formations may appear again.

The following factors may become a mandatory reason for visiting a doctor:

  • neoplasms are localized in the intimate area;
  • non-uniform color, constant itching and bleeding in warts;
  • soreness or trauma in the formations;
  • a sharp increase in the number;
  • vague boundaries in the neoplasm.

Note that treating warts at home can be bad. Folk remedies not only do not contribute to recovery, but also lead to a deterioration in the general condition. For example, skin inflammation or malignancy. All home procedures should be carried out only as prescribed by a doctor with medicines from a pharmacy.

Methods for removing papilloma

In clinics, several methods of eliminating warts are actively practiced.The attending physician will help you choose the appropriate technique and the number of procedures. With a large number of large growths, one visit is not enough, single small warts are removed in one visit.

Laser procedure

Laser wart removal in Tula is one of the fastest and most painless methods. The laser beam acts on the affected area pointwise, heating the cells of the wart and evaporating their liquid. Drying of the build-up takes a few seconds, the capillaries are clogged, and bleeding does not occur.For procedures on the face, a soft grinding laser is used, which excludes the appearance of a scar.

This method is suitable for all areas of the body where the cosmetic issue comes first. Growths less than 1 mm and an area of up to 1 cm are removed in one procedure; for large formations, several procedures are required. One procedure takes 3-5 minutes, and the recovery period is less than a week.

The following points may become contraindications to the method:

  • purulent inflammation in the area of neoplasms;
  • weak immunity;
  • malignant changes in the wart.

After the procedure for the removal of papillomas with a laser in Tula, in a couple of hours, redness around the wart, swelling and pain appear. This is due to the body’s response to cell death, all symptoms will pass by themselves after 1-3 days. A dry crust remains on the treated area that does not require additional maintenance. After 5-7 days, it will peel off on its own.

Surgical removal

The operation is performed by a dermatological surgeon, the papilloma is excised with a scalpel along with the root and a cosmetic suture is applied.The entire procedure is performed under local anesthesia. After the operation, careful care of the suture is required; its healing time reaches two weeks.

This method removes warts of any size. It is also used when there is a suspicion of malignancy of the formation, with constant injury or inflammation of the wart.

Contraindications:

  • the presence of infectious diseases;
  • severe pathologies of the heart, kidneys, liver;
  • poor blood clotting.

For proper maintenance it is necessary to treat the joint with hydrogen peroxide. The remaining liquid is removed with a sterile napkin, then treated with brilliant green or fucorcin. If necessary, the seam is covered with a sterile gauze napkin and secured with a plaster.

Cryodestruction

Implies destruction of papilloma with liquid nitrogen. It is applied to the wart with an applicator and the formations are frozen at a temperature of minus 196 degrees. Under the influence of nitrogen, the water in the formations turns into ice, its crystals grow and destroy the cell walls.The procedure time depends on the size of the papilloma: for small ones, 5 seconds are enough, processing for large ones can take up to 30 seconds.

The method is suitable for filiform and plantar warts, with frequent trauma to formations, the appearance of children. Do not use with a strong decrease in immunity and in the face area.

After 15-20 minutes, a bubble with a transparent or reddish liquid forms on the treated area. The appearance of edema, pain and redness is considered a normal reaction, it goes away after 2-3 days.The bubble does not smear and does not open, for 3-5 days it will burst itself. During this time, new young skin forms under it.

Electrocoagulation

Removal by electric current. The area of the wart is excised with an electric knife or a loop to healthy tissue. The heated instrument seals the blood vessels, which completely eliminates bleeding. The duration of the procedure takes 5-10 minutes, the method is suitable for removing formations up to 1 cm. Since the depth of tissue destruction is equal to the diameter of the formation, and after removing large elements, a notch will remain on the skin.

Contraindications:

  • the period of pregnancy and lactation;
  • poor blood clotting;
  • the presence of inflammation in the wart area;
  • individual intolerance to anesthetics and electrical procedures;
  • tendency to form keloid scars.

A crust forms at the site of removal, it must not be wetted or removed. Treatment is carried out twice a day with a 5% solution of potassium permanganate or Baneocin powder.After 7-9 days, the crust will go away by itself.

Warts are benign growths that rise slightly above the surface of the skin.Flat warts are most commonly found between the toes, while rounded formations can be seen on the upper surface of the hand.

Treatment of warts on fingers is a complex multi-stage process. It includes:

  • Mechanical removal using modern cosmetic products.

  • Stimulation of the immune system.

You can quickly reduce a wart using modern means.The procedure will take 5 to 15 minutes. However, this will not guarantee its disappearance forever. It is passed from mother to child during pregnancy, or from person to person through sexual contact. To get rid of warts, complex treatment is necessary, but even it is not always effective. When formations are detected, it is necessary to treat both sexual partners.Otherwise, there is a second risk of contracting HPV.

Methods of disposal

It is possible to remove the wart from the fingers and toes using the following methods:

  • Open surgery allows you to remove large formations in hard-to-reach places. These are the spaces between the toes and tendon areas. Surgical intervention is also used in cases where it is impossible to immediately make a differential diagnosis between the wart and other neoplasms.In such cases, after excision, the tissue is sent to a histological laboratory. Recovery period after the procedure is 3-7 days.
  • Laser removal. The use of this technique may be accompanied by a feeling of discomfort, but no pain occurs. The advantage of laser removal is the absence of scars after the procedure. Depending on the location, the deletion can take from 5 to 15 minutes. Rehabilitation takes up to 3 days.
  • Electrocoagulation allows you to remove both plantar and vulgar warts.Most often, the method is used on the toes. The procedure can be painful and is therefore performed under local anesthesia. The rehabilitation period takes 3 to 7 days. Small scars may remain after the intervention.
  • Cryodestruction. Liquid nitrogen is used for small and large formations. The wart is frozen for 10-15 minutes, after which it disappears on its own. The procedure is painless, but it may cause a tingling sensation. Scars do not remain after such removal.The recovery period lasts up to 72 hours.

In order to remove complex multi-chambered warts, sometimes a combination of the above methods must be used. So, after freezing, excision with a scalpel can be used. A professional beautician will advise you on the best way to treat warts on your fingers in each case.

Traditional methods of treatment should not be considered as an independent form or even part of therapy. In such recipes, it is necessary to use active aggressive substances that can lead to skin burns and complicate the subsequent medical removal of warts.

Warts in children: on hands, fingers, legs

Warts in children are formations on the skin that are of a viral nature.Most often they appear on the hands and feet, but they can also form in other places of the body – on the face, genitals, scalp, in the armpits. Although warts are not a threat to a child’s health, they can be easily injured and lead to infection. Therefore, they should be removed without waiting for complications.

Why do warts appear

The appearance of warts is caused by the activity of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the child’s bloodstream through scratches or wounds.For a long time, it may not manifest itself, but if the immune system malfunctions, it begins to change the structure of epidermal cells and leads to the formation of growths on the skin. Many factors can provoke a decrease in immunity:

  • stress;
  • overweight;
  • lack of minerals and vitamins;
  • hypothermia of the body;
  • frequent colds;
  • Hormonal changes in adolescence.

Types of warts

In their shape, growths in children can be round, threadlike, oval or asymmetric. Doctors distinguish several types of warts, which differ in color, size, structure:

  • Vulgar: are more often formed on the hands and can be both single and in the form of merging clusters. They look like small towering growths with a rough surface and clear contours.
  • Palmar-plantar: large calluses on the soles or palms. Usually they are single and grow deeply into the tissue, forming painful growths with a rigid structure.
  • Juvenile: can occur on any part of the body. Their distinctive features are uneven shape, smooth surface and rapid keratinization.
  • Pointed: grow on mucous membranes and appear as rounded formations similar to cauliflower.

Diagnostics

Before starting the treatment of warts, the doctor examines the child and determines the type of neoplasm. In some cases, the patient may be referred for a biopsy (if cancer is suspected) or for PCR analysis (a method that detects the DNA of the HPV pathogen in a person’s blood). To clarify the diagnosis, dermatoscopy is performed.

Methods for removing warts

Treatment of warts includes a set of measures aimed at suppressing the activity of the virus and the safe removal of growths.Often, viral warts are accompanied by increased sweating. In such situations, additional therapy is prescribed to get rid of excessive sweating.

To remove warts in children, the safest and most painless methods are chosen:

Dermatologist answers questions about warts

Dermatovenerologist, infectious disease doctor Svetlana Valentinovna Kuklina, doctor of the highest category.

People are often mistaken about such an urgent problem as warts. Often, skin manifestations push people towards inappropriate treatment, which can harm health and beauty.Here are five common warts myths that your health, and even your life, depends on.

Myth 1. Warts are an exclusively skin disease.
Most people believe that all manifestations on the skin, including warts, signal exclusively skin diseases. However, it is not. The wart is just the tip of the iceberg. But the problem itself, the danger is inside the person. Let’s take an example. If you take a good-looking apple, but with a small wormhole, then breaking it in half, you can see that it is teeming with a large number of worms.Roughly the same thing happens in humans. When the immune system is weakened, the human papillomavirus is found in the basal cells of the body’s skin. And this manifests itself on the skin with just such a small problem, it would seem, not so significant.

There are several types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which may or may not cause cancer. Many people carry this virus. If immunity is normal, then the presence of HPV is simply not noticeable to our body.However, if the body is weakened, the virus captures a human cell and begins to develop and multiply in it.

Myth 2. Warts and papillomas are one and the same.
Warts and papillomas are caused by the same virus – HPV, but by different types. Accordingly, they may differ, for example, in the places where tissue growths caused by this virus appear. Some pass without a trace, without treatment, while others, on the contrary, require mandatory removal. There are benign, and there are malignant skin manifestations of HPV, which can lead to serious consequences.So, what do papillomas and warts look like?

Wart
If we talk about warts, they are usually round or conical in shape and quite dense to the touch. Most often flesh-colored. May be yellowish or slightly brown. The diameter can be up to ten millimeters. Although there are more than a centimeter. The top of the wart is dry and has a so-called root. Typical positions are the hands and feet. There are also flat or juvenile warts.They often appear on the face and affect mainly young children and adolescents, which is why they are actually called that. There are plantar warts located on the sole of the foot, which are often confused with corns. Of all the formations, the wart is the most benign.

Papilloma
The characteristic features of a papilloma are the presence of a stem and the absence of a root. The diameter of the papillomas is generally five to ten millimeters. But there are more. Papillomas are often flesh-colored, but can also be dirty brown.Typical sites for papillomas are the face, neck, armpits, and other natural folds. Papilloma is also found on the cervix. And if warts do not require compulsory treatment and can go away by themselves, then papillomas do not go away on their own. In addition, they can grow and become malignant, especially if they are regularly injured, for example, by clothing or jewelry.

Genital warts
Formations of pink or bluish color are even more dangerous. Outwardly they look like a cockscomb.They do not have a root and do not adhere tightly to the skin. A characteristic feature of genital warts is sexual transmission. Often they are located on the genitals, as well as mucous membranes, including the mucous membranes of the mouth, conjunctiva and genitourinary organs. Sometimes in patients, genital warts may not appear on the external genitals, but can be found in the vagina, on the cervix and cause dysplasia. The main cause of cervical cancer is the human papillomavirus of high oncogenic risk.

When skin manifestations occur, laboratory tests should be performed. Most often, a Pap smear (PAP test) is prescribed, analysis is carried out using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Sometimes a histological examination of tissue samples obtained with a biopsy is carried out, and the determination of antibodies. When genital warts appear, you need to seek help from a dermatovenerologist. Usually they also consult an immunologist.

Myth 3.Infection with a virus through a handshake.
If you shake hands or touch a person who has a wart in the hand, it is almost impossible to get infected with it. If the skin of a healthy person is intact, the risk of transmission of the virus from an infected person is zero. Moreover, if a sick person has a wart damaged, and a healthy person has any damage to the skin, then in this case, upon contact, viral particles may well be transmitted from a sick person to a healthy person.

Infection often occurs when sharing personal hygiene items such as towels, manicure supplies, washcloths, etc.d.

Myth 4. A wart can be cured on its own.
Why not self-medicate? First, one cannot be sure exactly what kind of problem appeared on the skin: a wart or papilloma. Secondly, self-medication can be harmful to health, as well as spoil the appearance. Independent actions can cause a burn, a scar, which then still have to be treated. Do not use acidic compounds. Acid-based products are usually transparent, so the area and depth of their effect are not visible.As a result, you can get a severe burn that will take a long time to heal. Subsequently, the burn will turn into a scar, which is not very aesthetically pleasing.

It is highly not recommended to overtighten papillomas to remove them. When bandaging, the upper part of the papilloma dies off and falls off. But the human papilloma virus, again, remains in the skin layers, and the papilloma will grow again. In addition, this way you can spread the infection even more.

Myth 5. A wart can be removed once and for all.
When the wart is removed, only its external manifestations disappear.But the virus itself is not destroyed. In the future, you need to work with the immune system. According to statistics, within two to three years in eighty to ninety percent of cases, the virus is eliminated from the body. Sometimes elimination is possible against the background of self-healing. But more often, for the treatment of warts, joint participation in the process of dermatologists, immunologists, gynecologists is required.

Removal of such skin manifestations in cosmetology or medical institutions is carried out using cryodestruction, laser coagulation, electrocoagulation.Liquid nitrogen or the action of heat causes controlled necrosis of the skin, the formation itself, and, accordingly, the build-up is removed.

Preventive measures.
It is important that the skin is protected from cuts and damage. Otherwise, you need to treat the damaged area and seal it with adhesive tape. During this time, it is not recommended to visit such public places as baths, saunas, swimming pools. For genital warts, condoms should be used to minimize the risk of such undesirable manifestations.For prevention, it is important to maintain a normal immune system. To do this, you need to rest normally, eat right, consume a sufficient amount of protein and vitamins to replace and restore immune cells.
