The Science Behind Morning Breath: Understanding the Root Cause

Morning breath, also known as halitosis, is a common phenomenon that affects many people upon waking. But what exactly causes this unpleasant odor? The primary culprit is a decrease in saliva production during sleep.

During the night, your salivary glands slow down their production of saliva. This reduction in saliva flow creates an environment where bacteria can thrive. Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by:

  • Washing away food particles
  • Neutralizing acids in the mouth
  • Providing oxygen to kill anaerobic bacteria

Without sufficient saliva, bacteria multiply rapidly, breaking down proteins and producing volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). These compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, are responsible for the characteristic foul odor of morning breath.

Dry Mouth and Its Impact on Morning Breath

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is the leading cause of bad breath. It can be exacerbated by several factors:

  • Mouth breathing during sleep
  • Snoring
  • Certain medications
  • Medical conditions affecting saliva production

Is dry mouth always the culprit behind morning breath? While it’s the primary cause, other factors can contribute to or worsen the condition.

Contributing Factors to Morning Breath: Beyond Dry Mouth

While reduced saliva flow is the main cause of morning breath, several other factors can contribute to this unpleasant condition:

  1. Oral health issues: Tooth decay, gum disease, and untreated dental problems can harbor bacteria and exacerbate bad breath.
  2. Diet: Consuming strong-smelling foods like garlic, onions, and certain spices can lead to lingering odors.
  3. Tobacco and alcohol use: These substances can dry out the mouth and leave persistent odors.
  4. Medical conditions: Sinus infections, acid reflux, and certain systemic diseases can contribute to bad breath.
  5. Poor oral hygiene: Inadequate brushing, flossing, and tongue cleaning allow bacteria to flourish.

Do these factors affect everyone equally? The impact of these contributing factors can vary from person to person, depending on individual physiology and habits.

Prevalence of Morning Breath: How Common Is It?

Morning breath is a widespread issue affecting a significant portion of the population. According to the American Dental Association, approximately 50% of adults experience bad breath, or halitosis, at some point in their lives.

This high prevalence can be attributed to various factors:

  • Universal decrease in saliva production during sleep
  • Common oral hygiene habits and lifestyle factors
  • Prevalence of contributing medical conditions

Does everyone experience morning breath to the same degree? The severity and frequency of morning breath can vary widely among individuals, influenced by factors such as oral hygiene practices, diet, and overall health.

Effective Treatments for Morning Breath: Combating the Odor

Fortunately, there are several effective strategies to combat morning breath and wake up with fresher breath:

1. Proper Oral Hygiene

Maintaining a thorough oral hygiene routine is crucial in preventing morning breath. This includes:

  • Brushing teeth for at least two minutes, twice daily
  • Flossing daily to remove food particles between teeth
  • Using an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria

2. Tongue Cleaning

The tongue harbors a significant amount of bacteria, particularly at the back. Using a tongue scraper or brush can effectively remove this bacterial coating. Did you know that about 85% of bad breath originates from the back of the tongue?

3. Saliva Stimulants

Increasing saliva production can help combat dry mouth and reduce morning breath. Options include:

  • Sugar-free gum or lozenges
  • Over-the-counter saliva substitutes
  • Staying hydrated throughout the day

4. Lifestyle Changes

Certain lifestyle modifications can significantly improve morning breath:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Avoiding strong-smelling foods before bed

Can these treatments eliminate morning breath completely? While these strategies can significantly reduce morning breath, complete elimination may not always be possible due to individual factors and natural physiological processes.

Natural Remedies for Morning Breath: Home Solutions

In addition to conventional treatments, several natural remedies can help combat morning breath:

1. Baking Soda Rinse

Create an alkaline environment in your mouth by gargling with a baking soda solution before bed. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of water, gargle for one minute, and avoid rinsing afterward for maximum effectiveness.

2. Green Tea

Rich in polyphenols, green tea can help reduce oral bacteria and neutralize sulfur compounds. Consider drinking a cup of green tea before bed or using it as a mouth rinse.

3. Essential Oils

Certain essential oils, such as peppermint, tea tree, and eucalyptus, have antimicrobial properties that can help freshen breath. Add a few drops to water for a natural mouth rinse.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Known for its antibacterial properties, apple cider vinegar can help balance the pH in your mouth. Mix a tablespoon in a glass of water and use it as a pre-bedtime rinse.

Are natural remedies as effective as conventional treatments? While natural remedies can be beneficial, they should be used in conjunction with proper oral hygiene practices for optimal results.

The Role of Diet in Morning Breath: Foods to Avoid and Embrace

Your dietary choices can significantly impact the severity of morning breath. Understanding which foods to avoid and which to embrace can help you wake up with fresher breath.

Foods to Avoid

Certain foods are known to contribute to bad breath and should be limited, especially before bedtime:

  • Garlic and onions
  • Strong cheeses
  • Spicy foods
  • High-sugar foods
  • Alcohol

Foods to Embrace

On the other hand, some foods can help combat bad breath:

  • Crunchy fruits and vegetables (e.g., apples, carrots)
  • Probiotic-rich foods (e.g., yogurt, kefir)
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Herbs like parsley and mint

Does diet alone determine the severity of morning breath? While diet plays a significant role, it’s important to remember that multiple factors contribute to morning breath, and a comprehensive approach is necessary for effective management.

When to Seek Professional Help: Persistent Bad Breath

While occasional morning breath is normal, persistent bad breath throughout the day may indicate an underlying issue that requires professional attention. Consider consulting a dentist or healthcare provider if:

  • Bad breath persists despite good oral hygiene practices
  • You experience dry mouth frequently
  • You notice other symptoms such as tooth pain, bleeding gums, or sore throat
  • You have a known medical condition that can affect oral health

A dental professional can help identify any underlying causes of persistent bad breath and recommend appropriate treatments. These may include:

  • Professional dental cleaning
  • Treatment for gum disease or tooth decay
  • Adjustments to oral hygiene routine
  • Referral to a specialist if a medical condition is suspected

Should you wait until bad breath becomes severe before seeking help? It’s advisable to address persistent bad breath early on, as it can be a sign of underlying oral health issues that may worsen if left untreated.

The Impact of Oral Probiotics on Morning Breath: A Promising Solution

Recent research has shed light on the potential benefits of oral probiotics in combating morning breath and improving overall oral health. Oral probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help maintain a healthy balance in the oral microbiome.

How Oral Probiotics Work

Oral probiotics function by:

  • Competing with harmful bacteria for space and nutrients
  • Producing substances that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria
  • Helping to neutralize odor-causing compounds

Potential Benefits

Studies suggest that regular use of oral probiotics may offer several benefits:

  • Reduced bad breath
  • Improved gum health
  • Decreased risk of tooth decay
  • Enhanced overall oral hygiene

Incorporating Oral Probiotics

Oral probiotics are available in various forms, including lozenges, gums, and rinses. They can be easily incorporated into your daily oral care routine. However, it’s important to note that while promising, more research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects and optimal use of oral probiotics for oral health.

Can oral probiotics replace traditional oral hygiene practices? While oral probiotics show promise, they should be used as a complement to, not a replacement for, regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.

The Connection Between Sleep Quality and Morning Breath

The quality of your sleep can have a surprising impact on the severity of morning breath. Poor sleep habits and certain sleep disorders can exacerbate the conditions that lead to bad breath upon waking.

Sleep Disorders and Morning Breath

Several sleep-related issues can contribute to worse morning breath:

  • Sleep apnea: This condition often leads to mouth breathing, which dries out the oral cavity.
  • Chronic snoring: Like sleep apnea, snoring can cause mouth dryness.
  • Insomnia: Disrupted sleep patterns can affect saliva production and overall oral health.

Improving Sleep for Better Breath

Enhancing your sleep quality may help reduce morning breath. Consider these strategies:

  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
  • Create a comfortable sleep environment
  • Avoid screens before bedtime
  • Practice relaxation techniques to improve sleep quality

If you suspect a sleep disorder, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Does better sleep guarantee fresh morning breath? While improved sleep can help, it’s just one factor in managing morning breath. A comprehensive approach including good oral hygiene, diet, and addressing any underlying health issues is most effective.

The Psychological Impact of Morning Breath: Addressing Social Anxiety

Morning breath isn’t just a physical issue; it can have significant psychological and social impacts. Many people experience anxiety or self-consciousness due to concerns about their breath, particularly in intimate or close social situations.

Common Concerns

People with persistent morning breath may experience:

  • Social anxiety in morning interactions
  • Reduced self-confidence
  • Strain on personal relationships
  • Avoidance of close contact or intimate situations

Coping Strategies

Addressing the psychological impact of morning breath involves both managing the physical issue and developing coping strategies:

  • Open communication with partners or close friends about the concern
  • Focusing on effective oral hygiene routines to boost confidence
  • Carrying breath fresheners for quick solutions in social situations
  • Seeking professional help if anxiety becomes overwhelming

Can addressing morning breath improve overall quality of life? For many people, effectively managing morning breath can lead to increased confidence and improved social interactions, positively impacting various aspects of life.

Innovations in Morning Breath Prevention: Future Treatments

As our understanding of oral health evolves, new innovations are emerging to combat morning breath more effectively. These advancements offer hope for those struggling with persistent halitosis.

Emerging Technologies

Several innovative approaches are being developed or refined:

  • Advanced oral microbiome testing to identify problematic bacteria
  • Targeted probiotic treatments tailored to individual oral microbiomes
  • Smart toothbrushes with breath analysis capabilities
  • Nanotechnology-based treatments to neutralize odor-causing compounds

Personalized Treatment Plans

The future of morning breath prevention may involve highly personalized approaches:

  • Customized oral care products based on individual oral biology
  • Precision probiotics designed for specific oral health needs
  • Tailored dietary recommendations to optimize oral health

Will these innovations make morning breath a thing of the past? While complete elimination of morning breath may not be realistic, these advancements promise more effective management and prevention strategies for a wider range of individuals.

As research continues and new technologies emerge, the future looks bright for those seeking fresher morning breath. However, it’s important to remember that maintaining good oral hygiene practices and addressing underlying health issues will remain fundamental in managing morning breath effectively.

Why Does Your Morning Breath Stink When You Wake Up?

Make you and your partner happier with fresher morning breath when you first wake up. The bad breath occurs because your saliva dries up during sleep. This allows bacteria to build up and produce foul smells. Remain calm! Remedies exist to reduce and eliminate the odor.

The Science Behind Morning Breath

Ok, we get it. You want to get rid of your toxic morning breath after a good night’s rest. Why do you wake up with it? Science tells us many bodily functions stop or slow down in our sleep. This includes our glands that produce saliva. Saliva plays a key role in combating bad breath. High amounts of oxygen exist in saliva, which kills anaerobic bacteria.

Additionally, saliva helps clear away food particles in your mouth that fuel the odor-producing bacteria. Combined with less saliva, the bacteria rapidly multiplies and creates stinky breath. Snoring or breathing through your mouth while sleeping means even worse morning breath will plague you.  Mouth dryness remains the leading cause of bad breath.

Other Factors in Morning Breath

Several other culprits exist, as well. They contribute to studies finding about 50 percent of adults experience bad breath, or halitosis, during their lifetime, the American Dental Association reports. We’ve listed some of those other causes:

  • Tooth decay or cavities
  • Caps or crowns losing cement, also referred to as “cement washout”
  • Certain foods or drinks, such as onions, garlic and coffee
  • Tobacco and alcohol use
  • Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, and periodontal disease, or gum disease
  • Mouth, nose and throat issues caused by infections or allergies
  • Dieting often
  • Medications
  • Diseases, such as diabetes, lung infections or abscesses, kidney or liver failure, acid reflux and other gastrointestinal conditions
  • Poor dental hygiene practices
  • Lack of regular dental cleanings

Note that if you eliminate all dental-related causes and still have bad breath, then we suggest you make an appointment to see a physician.

Treatments to Eliminate Morning Breath

Of course, exercising a good dental routine before you fall asleep is the best way to make your morning breath more fresh and clean. Brushing, flossing, gargling mouthwash and cleaning your tongue properly removes most food particles that help to generate bacteria in your mouth.

Tongue Scraper

Did you know about 85 percent of your bad breath comes from the back of your tongue? Stick out your tongue to view the white or brown coating at the back. That’s where bacteria hangs out and generates volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). Hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan are the primary bad smelling compounds.

That’s why Dr. Lauren at Orange Beach Family Dentistry and other dental experts recommend that before bed you place a tongue scraper at the back of the tongue and pull it forward to clean it. Many brands exist. Find a scraper that you like best that helps in eliminating sour morning breath.

Saliva Stimulants

Various dry mouth products exist, too. These increase the flow of saliva and some can even stay in your mouth overnight while you sleep. If you do wake up in the middle of the night, be sure to swish some water around in your mouth.

Baking Soda

Another helpful tool in the morning breath battle: gargle baking soda before going to bed. This creates an alkaline environment in your mouth that helps kill bacteria. Use a teaspoon of baking soda in one cup of water and gargle it for one minute. It’s safe to go ahead and swallow some of the solution to coat your throat. Most importantly, to remain effective, do not rinse your mouth after doing this.

Oral Probiotics

New research suggests oral probiotics — known primarily for promoting healthy digestion — can lead to improved dental hygiene. Oral probiotics are good bacteria that fight back the amount of bad bacteria. Additionally, findings indicate other benefits to the health of your mouth, such as teeth whitening and reducing bleeding of your gums.

What Causes Morning Breath and How to Treat It | Mountain Top Periodontics & Implants

Eww, that smell! If you awake with morning breath, chances are someone notices it and has remarked how awful it is. Or maybe you’ve noticed it and you’re covering your mouth so other people don’t get a whiff of it. But why do you have morning breath to begin with? And how do you get rid of it for good?

Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath, called halitosis, is pretty common. The Academy of General Dentistry states that somewhere around 80 million people suffer from chronic bad breath. Those who do not brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly are more likely to have halitosis than people with good oral hygiene habits. People who take medications, suffer from dry mouth, and those who breathe through their mouths instead of their noses may suffer from bad breath. Even if none of these things apply to you, you can still suffer from bad breath due to eating certain foods or first thing in the morning.

Morning breath is often caused by the lack of saliva in your mouth. When you’re awake your mouth usually produces enough saliva to break down food particles that allow odor-causing bacteria to grow. But when you’re asleep, the saliva production slows down and the bacteria starts growing and produces what is called ‘volatile sulfur compounds’ or VSC which cause your mouth to stink.

What Is Morning Breath and Why Do You Have It?

If you mouth breathe, chances are you mouth breathe while sleeping and that causes your mouth to dry out. Dry mouth equals little saliva, which causes morning breath.

Link Between Bad Breath and Health Problems

Bad breath isn’t just an inconvenience. It can be a sign of gingivitis and periodontitis, which can lead to other more serious concerns such as stroke and heart disease. In fact, the toxins in the mouth bacteria can be so bad, they’ve been implicated in Alzheimer’s and oral cancer. If you’re dealing with bad breath, you should speak to your periodontist, Dr. Jeanne Salcetti, about it. She can determine if you need further treatment gum disease.

Bye, Bye Morning Breath

You can reduce the effects of morning breath by practicing good oral hygiene, especially before bed. Brushing and flossing helps get rid of pockets of food that can harbor bacteria. You can also clean your tongue to remove large amounts of bacteria that have gathered to give you morning breath during the night.

To clean your tongue, you’ll need a tongue scraper, a toothbrush with soft bristles, or even a spoon. If your tongue is pink and shiny, it isn’t harboring much bacteria, but if it has a white film covering it, it’s a sign you have bad breath. If you need confirmation, lick your clean wrist and let your wrist dry. Then, smell it. If your breath is stinky, your wrist will be stinky too.
Get rid of the film by either gently scraping your tongue with the tongue scraper or the spoon. Or, alternatively, you can brush your tongue to get it clean. That way, you’ll have less of a chance of having morning breath when you wake up.

See Your Dentist Regularly

Since bad breath isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s important to take care of it, especially if you have chronic bad breath. Seeing your dentist regularly, practicing good oral hygiene, and cutting down on sugar and carbohydrate-laden food is a good way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. If you have concerns about gum disease and halitosis, be sure to see a periodontist who can address those problems.

What Causes Bad Breath? 5 Reasons You Have Bad Breath

Ugh, bad breath. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, 80 million people suffer from chronic halitosis, which is just a fancy name for bad breath. You’re not alone! Unfortunately, fixing bad breath isn’t always as easy as popping a mint into your mouth, but if you can identify the cause of your bad breath, then you can fix it.

1. Morning Breath

Have you ever wondered why your breath smells bad in the morning? Like most cases of bad breath, morning breath is caused by bacteria. Usually, saliva washes away the debris in your mouth that collects bacteria, but when you sleep saliva production goes down. That means it’s more difficult for your mouth to fight the bacteria that cause bad breath.

2. Food

Of course, food! You already knew that foods like garlic and onions caused bad breath, but when you go to brush after lunch make sure you wait 20 minutes because enamel is weakened after eating certain foods. Also, eat a healthy, balanced diet! Because it’s good for you, duh, and it’s good for your breath, too. Bad diets cause bad breath.

3. Dehydration

If you can’t quite figure out what’s causing bad breath, the solution might be as easy as it gets: Drink more water! Dehydration causes bad breath because when you’re dehydrated your body doesn’t produce enough saliva. Without saliva there to clean out debris, bacteria have the chance to grow and cause bad breath. If you aren’t drinking enough water while working out, this might be the cause of your bad breath.

4. Gum Disease

Bad breath is one of the symptoms of gum disease. Poor oral hygiene allows plaque to build up and that plaque is the perfect place for smelly bacteria to grow. Also, if gum disease is left untreated, it can lead to more serious problems. Talk to your dentist to figure out the best solution for you. It might be as simple as brushing twice a day and flossing, or using a Waterpik Water Flosser.

5. Medical Conditions

If you’ve addressed other potential causes and bad breath persists, then it might be a symptom of a medical condition. In addition to gum disease, bad breath can also be caused by cavities. When in doubt, see your dentist! Other causes of bad breath include sinus problems, strep throat and gastric reflux. Although those causes usually have distinct odors. If necessary, your dentist will refer you to a physician.

If you’re struggling with bad breath or just need a dental checkup, come talk to Dr. McLaughlin and the team at Dental Touch Associates in Cedar Rapids. Nothing compares to seeing a patient look at their new smile for the first time!

Bad or Changed Breath | Michigan Medicine

Topic Overview

When is bad breath most likely to occur?

Everybody has bad breath from time to time, especially first thing in the morning. You also may have bad breath when you are hungry, when you are dieting, or after eating foods with a strong odor, such as garlic, onions, or pastrami.

What causes bad breath?

Many things can cause bad breath. A major cause is decreased saliva. Saliva has a cleaning action that helps reduce or eliminate bad breath. When saliva decreases, bacteria can grow, causing bad breath.

Bad breath caused by a decrease in saliva may be especially noticeable:

  • In the morning. The flow of saliva almost stops during sleep. The reduced cleaning action of the saliva allows bacteria to grow, causing bad breath.
  • When you are hungry. Bad breath is more common in people who miss meals or are dieting. Chewing food increases saliva in the mouth. When you are not eating, saliva decreases and bacteria growth increases, causing bad breath.
  • When you are dehydrated. When you become dehydrated, you do not produce as much saliva. The reduced cleaning action of the saliva allows bacteria to grow, causing bad breath.
  • From diseases that affect the salivary glands, such as Sjögren’s syndrome or scleroderma.
  • When you are taking certain medicines.
  • After drinking alcohol beverages.

Other causes of bad or changed breath include:

  • Eating foods with a strong odor, such as garlic, onions, or pastrami.
  • Smoking or using smokeless (spit) tobacco, such as snuff or chewing tobacco.
  • Bacteria and plaque buildup in the mouth from food caught between teeth, dentures, or dental appliances.

Mouth and throat problems that can cause mouth odor include:

  • Throat or mouth infections, such as strep throat.
  • Dental problems, such as cavities.
  • Gum disease (periodontal disease), which may cause a metallic breath odor.
  • Tonsils with deep tunnels (crypts) that trap food particles.
  • Throat or mouth cancers.

Problems in other areas of the body that can cause mouth odor include:

  • Problems with the nose, such as a sinus infection, nasal polyps, or an object in the nose.
  • Diabetes. A symptom of very high blood sugar is a strong, fruity breath odor.
  • Digestive system disorders, such as reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease), bowel problems, or cancer.
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
  • Liver disease.
  • Lung problems, such as an infection or cancer.

How is bad breath treated?

To help improve your breath:

  • Gargle with water.
  • Brush your teeth, tongue, roof of your mouth, and gums at least twice a day with toothpaste.
  • Floss your teeth once each day.
  • Eat a low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat less meat.
  • Do not smoke or use other tobacco products, such as snuff or chewing (spit) tobacco.
  • Avoid foods and drinks that cause bad breath, such as garlic and alcohol.
  • Eat at regular intervals. Dieting or missing meals can decrease saliva and cause bad breath.
  • Chew sugar-free gum, suck on sugar-free mints, or drink water, especially if your mouth is dry. Try using breath sticks, which contain the ingredients found in a mouthwash and dissolve in your mouth.
  • Remove dentures, removable bridges, partial plates, or orthodontic appliances and clean them once each day or as directed by your dentist. Pieces of food and germs can collect on these appliances and cause bad breath.
  • Use a mouthwash for temporary relief of bad breath. Swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out.
  • Have regular dental checkups.
  • Make an appointment to see an ear, nose, and throat specialist (otolaryngologist) if you have frequent problems with mouth odor.

How to Get Rid of Morning Breath

No one wants to have bad breath, but it is common. The plethora of product advertisements promising to provide fresh breath demonstrate how much people are willing to pay to avoid this issue.

Bad breath, also called halitosis, can negatively impact a person’s social life and even potentially contribute to anxiety (1) and depression (2). While more research on the relationship between breath and mental health is needed, it is an important consideration.

Morning breath, or the smell of your breath as soon as you wake up, tends to be especially problematic. We’ll cover what causes morning breath and how to get rid of it.

Eat Breakfast

You might wonder why your breath stinks when you wake up. Research shows that morning breath likely smells worse because it contains more volatile sulfur compounds (3) than breath at other times of the day. Experts are still learning what affects volatile sulfur compound levels and why they vary throughout the day.

One way to banish morning breath is simple: eating breakfast. In one study, eating breakfast (4) led to a decrease in volatile sulfur compounds measured throughout the day. In fact, eating breakfast was even more effective at reducing the compounds behind bad breath than cleaning with a toothbrush.

Another study found that fasting, or restricting eating to only 25% of the normal amount for a day, doubled the number of people experiencing bad breath (5). These signs suggest that eating healthy meals at regular times — especially breakfast — can keep bad breath at bay.

Drink More Water

In lieu of, or in addition to, eating breakfast, drinking a large glass of water can help reduce your morning breath. Scientific research shows that drinking a glass of water reduces some bad-breath-causing compounds by 30% to 60% (6).

Brush Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth as part of your bedtime routine in order to prevent morning breath might seem obvious. Indeed, science shows that toothbrushing works. When people stop brushing their teeth (7), even temporarily, their morning breath and volatile sulfur compounds increase. Toothbrushing likely works by removing organisms that would otherwise create a film on the tongue and insides of the cheeks.

Try a Special Toothpaste

When it comes to fighting morning breath, certain types of toothpaste seem to be especially good at getting the job done. Brushing with a toothpaste containing strontium (8), an element present in some toothpastes for sensitive teeth, successfully reduces morning breath. Brushing at night with toothpaste containing zinc (9) also reduces morning breath the next morning. The addition of an extract from the leaves of the Sasa senanensis Rehder (10) can make toothpaste even better at fighting halitosis.

If you don’t have time to seek out a toothpaste with special ingredients, it may be easier to find a flavored one. Brushing your teeth with flavored toothpaste has been shown to prevent bad breath better than brushing with non-flavored toothpaste (11).

Rinse with Mouthwash or Water

Another factor that determines whether or not you have bad breath is the pH balance of your mouth (12). A lower, or more acidic, pH tends to be associated with worse breath, while a higher, or more alkaline, pH tends to be associated with better breath. Mouthwashes containing triclosan or essential oils have been shown to increase the mouth’s pH, which helps freshen breath.

Using mouthwash in the morning, even when you don’t brush your teeth, reduces bad breath (13). Certain mouthwashes, such as those containing chlorhexidine or zinc lactate (14), are especially effective. If you don’t have mouthwash on hand, however, rinsing with water alone in the morning can reduce your bad breath.

Scrape Your Tongue

Although brushing your teeth and rinsing with mouthwash can reduce bad breath, scraping your tongue (15) may be the most effective oral hygiene move. Tongue scraping can be done with a special tongue-scraping tool or with a toothbrush. This helps remove a film in which bacteria grow and produce volatile sulfur compounds.

Even though tongue scraping effectively reduces morning breath, you’ll get the best result if you also brush your teeth and use mouthwash (16). In combination, morning tongue scraping and mouth rinsing (17) can ward off bad breath for hours.

Eliminate Underlying Causes

If you have no other symptoms, you probably don’t need to worry about your bad breath indicating a larger issue. In some people, however, halitosis is the result of an underlying medical problem. If you notice your morning breath continues throughout the day despite you eating breakfast, drinking water, and practicing good oral hygiene, consider talking to a dentist or doctor.

Underlying health issues might be the cause of bad breath in up to 15% of people (18) experiencing halitosis. Bad breath is a symptom of cavities, an H. Pylori stomach infection, a gastrointestinal ulcer (19), and COVID-19 (20), among other illnesses.

Practice Healthy Habits

Even if your morning breath isn’t related to a medical issue, practicing healthy habits can help you deal with it. Many unhealthy habits (21) are potential causes of bad breath, such as drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes, doing certain drugs, and having a poor diet. Your alcohol intake and other habits also impact your sleep quality, providing a second incentive to pursue healthier habits.

Improve Your Morning Breath

Making certain lifestyle and oral hygiene changes can help improve your morning breath and boost your confidence throughout the day.

Why does breath smell so bad in the morning?

Whether you’ve had a big boozy night or not, you can almost guarantee you’ll wake up every morning with a grim taste in your mouth – which more often than not equals a grim smell. It’s not glamorous, but it’s true. It’s why a glass of water by your bedside table is a godsend if you ever wake up in close proximity to another human, because it serves as some kind of dilution to the abhorrent smell that will emerge if you open your mouth to speak.

But why? Why must we go through this hardship every morning? Luckily, Men’s Health asked an expert to find out.

It turns out it’s all to do with how much saliva you produce overnight. Essentially: not very much. Prosthodontist Mazen Natour explained that saliva serves to wash away bacteria in the mouth which can cause odours. The less saliva we produce (so therefore the drier the mouth), the more smelly bacteria can grow – meaning our breath smells far from fresh first thing.

The expert also pointed to snoring and breathing through your mouth during the night as other causes of making your mouth dry. So if you’re guilty of either of the above, you can expect your morning breath to be next level unfortunately.

But there is one positive to be taken out of this: bad breath in the morning is completely normal. It will be worse, mind you, if you skip a bedtime brush of your teeth the night before, because the leftover food particles will encourage the growth of bacteria. So don’t be lazy.

You might shy away from morning kisses because you’re paranoid your breath stinks, but be reassured: your partner’s will be much the same.

What Causes Bad Breath? (for Teens)

Bad breath, or halitosis, can be a major problem, especially when you’re about to snuggle with your sweetie or whisper a joke to your friend. The good news is that bad breath can often be prevented with some simple steps.

Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth. When you don’t brush and floss regularly, bacteria accumulate on the bits of food left in your mouth and between your teeth. The sulfur compounds released by these bacteria make your breath smell.

Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions that contain pungent oils, can contribute to bad breath because the oils are carried to your lungs and out through your mouth. Smoking is also a major cause of bad breath.

There are lots of myths about taking care of bad breath. Here are three things you may have heard about bad breath that are not true:

Myth #1: Mouthwash will make bad breath go away.

Mouthwash only gets rid of bad breath temporarily. If you do use mouthwash, look for an antiseptic (kills the germs that cause bad breath) and plaque-reducing one with a seal from the American Dental Association (ADA). When you’re deciding which dental products to toss into your shopping cart, it’s always a good idea to look for those that are accepted by the ADA. Also, ask your dentist for recommendations.

Myth #2: As long as you brush your teeth, you shouldn’t have bad breath.

The truth is that most people only brush their teeth for 30 to 45 seconds, which just doesn’t cut it. To sufficiently clean all the surfaces of your teeth, you should brush for at least 2 minutes at least twice a day. Remember to brush your tongue, too — bacteria love to hang out there. It’s equally important to floss because brushing alone won’t remove harmful plaque and food particles that become stuck between your teeth and gums.

Myth #3: If you breathe into your hand, you’ll know when you have bad breath.

Wrong! When you breathe, you don’t use your throat the same way you do when you talk. When you talk, you tend to bring out the odors from the back of your mouth (where bad breath originates), which simply breathing doesn’t do. Also, because we tend to get used to our own smells, it’s hard for a person to tell if he or she has bad breath.

If you’re concerned about bad breath, make sure you’re taking care of your teeth and mouth properly. Some sugar-free gums and mints can temporarily mask odors, too.

If you brush and floss properly and visit your dentist for regular cleanings, but your bad breath persists, you may have a medical problem like sinusitis or gum disease. Call your doctor or dentist if you suspect a problem. They can figure out if something else is behind your bad breath and help you take care of it.

Unpleasant body odor what to do

It seems that you follow your hygiene, you use deodorant, and you eat normally – but an unpleasant smell of sweat still appears. And that’s okay, because the body needs sweating to regulate body temperature. But I still don’t want to put up with it … Let’s figure out what can be done?

Some interesting facts: our body has two types of sweat glands – eccrine and apocrine – and they produce two different types of sweat. Both types are odorless, but the type of sweat produced in the armpits and groin smells unpleasant as it combines with bacteria that are usually found on the skin.

As a rule, unpleasant body odors are the cause of excessive sweating – hyperhidrosis.

If a person suffers from this ailment, first of all, an unpleasant odor will come from the legs and armpits. It is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Factors that increase the unpleasant odor from the body:

– overweight

– the use of fatty or spicy foods and drinks, for example, garlic, spices and alcohol

– some medications, for example, antidepressants

– some diseases – fruit odor can sometimes be a sign of diabetes, while chlorine odor can indicate liver or kidney disease

When is it time to see a doctor?

– body odor makes you worried

– you notice changes in body odor

– sweat more than usual

– sweat at night for no apparent reason

What to do?

– Limit spicy foods such as curry or garlic

– Keep clothing and footwear clean

– Wear natural fabrics such as cotton, silk or wool that allow your skin to breathe

– Get rid of hair regularly in the armpits – this will allow sweat to evaporate faster and give less time for bacteria to attack the sweat

– take a shower every day to get rid of bacteria on the skin

– use antibacterial soap and deodorant or antiperspirant after a shower

What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?

Deodorants use fragrances to mask the smell of sweat. Antiperspirants contain aluminum chloride, which reduces sweat production.

If the use of hygiene products does not reduce unpleasant body odors, you should immediately consult a doctor.

In our clinic, hyperhidrosis is treated with botulinum therapy – after that you can forget about unpleasant odors and the use of deodorants for several months!

How to get rid of odor in the mouth: useful life hacks

To prevent the development of problems in the oral cavity, you need to take the following measures:

  1. Monitor the condition of your teeth, do not start caries, visit the dentist in a timely manner.
  2. Treat pharyngitis and tonsillitis – diseases of the throat and tonsils also provoke an unpleasant odor.
  3. Strengthen the immune system to prevent the development of inflammatory and infectious processes.
  4. Learn how to deal with stress, avoid overstrain, as this weakens the immune system and makes the body vulnerable to infections.
  5. Change oral hygiene accessories regularly. For example, a toothbrush needs to be renewed every 3-4 months.If you use brushes, use disposable ones.

How to get rid of bad breath at home with proper nutrition

Hardly anyone would argue that nutrition plays a huge role in the functioning of our body. It also affects the freshness of breath and oral health.

To get rid of bad breath, you need to:

  1. Give up restrictive diets. Fasting, protein and ketogenic diets can provoke the appearance of halitosis. With them, the body enters a state of ketosis, when fat and ketones are used as the main source of energy, rather than glucose. As a result of ketosis, the level of acetone increases, which is the reason for the characteristic odor – this phenomenon is also called “ketosis breathing”. On low-carb diets, excess protein enters the body, and when it is processed, a lot of ammonia is released, which also negatively affects the freshness of your breath.
  2. Include in your diet more foods rich in vitamins and minerals that help clean your teeth. The list of such wonderful foods includes: celery, carrots, citrus fruits, apples, various berries, whole grains, brown rice, vegetables. Add cinnamon to your meals for a fresher breath.
  3. Avoid certain foods, including coffee, onions, garlic, spices, and alcoholic beverages. It is better to replace coffee with green tea, which is rich in polyphenols, which help break down sulfur compounds. This reduces the number of harmful bacteria in the oral cavity.
  4. Remember to drink enough water. Its deficiency is often the cause of bad breath. Lemon can be added to the water, which stimulates salivation, which helps to moisturize the mouth.

5 body odors that indicate serious health problems

5 body odors that cannot be ignored

Each person the planet has its own unique smell.It is formed as a result of metabolic processes, sweat secretion, and the vital activity of opportunistic microflora. In case of diseases, the smell can differ in sharpness and severity. Previously, this symptom helped doctors make diagnoses. At the moment, specialists are using more modern technologies, but bodily scent helps to identify some pathologies.

Causes of human body odor

Body odor in humans is distinguished by gender. In men, sweat is released more profusely and has a sharper obsessive amber.From women, a sour smell can emanate, which is not necessarily associated with pathological changes. A noticeable change is associated with metabolic processes and fluctuations in hormonal levels. The uncharacteristic repulsive amber from the body cannot be ignored. It is not necessarily associated with a disease, there are other reasons for its appearance, which are presented in the table:

The mechanism of the appearance of an unpleasant amber from the body

Emotional overloads endow a person with a disgusting smell.The sweat produced by the apocrine glands is high in fat and protein. They are an ideal breeding ground for microorganisms. The result of the latter’s vital activity is precisely the repulsive amber, which cannot be overlooked.

Those who drink alcoholic beverages face more than just fumes. The breakdown of alcohol molecules leads to the formation of substances that come out with sweat and give the body a repulsive odor that is difficult to ignore.

Any variant of dietary food with an emphasis on proteins (diets of Ducan, Atkins and others) leads to the appearance of acetone amber from the body. It is formed due to a lack of carbohydrates. The processing of proteins and fats into energy involves the synthesis of ketones, the accumulation of which provoke a specific aroma.

Eating certain foods

Onions, garlic, cabbage and some other sulfur-containing foods can also cause repulsive bodily amber.

Some pharmaceuticals (antipyretic and others) provoke heavy sweating, which is always accompanied by an unpleasant odor. In addition, muscle relaxants, antihistamines, and decongestants can affect the aroma.

Non-observance of hygiene rules

One of the common reasons for the appearance of repulsive amber from the human body, which cannot be ignored, is untimely hygiene. Rare visits to the shower and change of clothes with linen lead not only to the appearance of a smell, but also to some diseases.

Separately, it is worth considering the specific bodily aroma that appears in overweight people. The body begins to smell bad not only because of extra pounds and excessive sweating. Against the background of obesity, diabetes mellitus, iodine deficiency, thyroid disorders, kidney disease, and hypertension (high blood pressure) often develop. When the smell intensifies, it cannot be ignored. A timely visit to a doctor will help to identify diseases in time and begin treatment.

What does disease smell like

Doctors say that you can suspect a disease in a person by body odor. For example, this is how diabetes mellitus betrays itself, especially in the decompensated stage. In addition, there are many pathologies associated with serious metabolic disorders. The lingering odor of acetone from the body cannot be ignored. It can warn about the appearance of problems with the digestion or the endocrine system, a deficiency of carbohydrates. Diseases of the kidneys or liver, infections, pathogenic bacteria and viruses in the body can also cause the appearance of an unpleasant amber.

Various diseases lead to malfunctions of normal metabolic processes. As a result, the body produces intermediate substances that get onto the surface of the body with sweat and cause an unpleasant odor that should not be ignored:

  1. An unpleasant acetone plume comes from the body in cancer without differentiation of malignancy. A similar problem occurs in individuals with extensive liver damage.
  2. If your skin smells like cats even after hygiene procedures, you should get tested for urinary tract infections.This amber is accompanied by renal failure, nephritis, pyelonephritis.
  3. The smell of rotten meat from the body cannot be ignored, because this is one of the signs of cancer of the genitourinary system.
  4. A sugary sweet smell of sweat appears in patients with diphtheria.
  5. An unpleasant odor of wet wool from the body is a sign of a disturbed digestion process and problems with peristalsis.
  6. Vinegar smells from the body in people with diabetes and tuberculosis. In women, such amber can speak of mastopathy or breast cancer.
  7. The smell of rotten fish or algae from the body cannot be ignored either. As a rule, he talks about metabolic disorders, gastrointestinal pathologies.

5 body odors to watch out for

If you leave the gym after a grueling workout or indulge in an onion burger, body odor is natural. A shower, deodorant, or brushing your teeth with toothpaste can help deal with the problem. In some cases, an unpleasant odor cannot be ignored, and medical attention is needed to get rid of it.

Body odor often reflects a person’s health status. Scientists from Sweden conducted research and found that some diseases can provoke the appearance of a well-distinguishable unique amber from the human body. At the moment, experts recommend not to ignore the 5 main smells, which are often a signal of health problems.

Sweet breath is a sign of diabetes mellitus in the decompensated stage

With a strong decrease in insulin levels in the body, a person’s sugar rises and diabetic ketoacidosis may develop. This condition is especially common in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus in the decompensated stage. The body cannot produce the energy necessary for the normal functioning of all systems. Against this background, fatty acids begin to be processed into glucose, and ketones are formed in the blood.

Fruity breath comes from acetone. This acid is an intermediate metabolic product. Not everyone will be able to identify the problem on their own, but the doctor will accurately determine the cause of the appearance of a sweet smell from the mouth.The consequences of diabetic ketoacidosis can be serious and even fatal for the patient. Against the background of this condition, vomiting appears, frequent urination, leading to dehydration.

As a rule, ketoacidosis is accompanied by other signs of diabetes mellitus: decreased vision, weight loss, fatigue. Often, patients do not pay attention to these symptoms, so the diagnosis and the necessary therapy are postponed. If you get a fruity odor from the mouth, which is combined with difficulty breathing, fatigue, abdominal pain, dry mouth, you should go to the hospital. After taking the tests, the doctor will prescribe therapy aimed at replenishing the lost fluid and stabilizing the blood glucose level.

Unpleasant foot odor is a symptom of a fungal infection

If shoes and feet become the source of unpleasant amber, it is recommended to check for the presence of foot fungus. The disease is characterized by the presence of corns, dry skin, peeling. Pathogenic fungi and bacteria are actively multiplying, against which the feet become smelly. The disease is dangerous because it is able to multiply in other parts of the body (groin, armpits).If the problem is ignored, then these areas will also begin to exude an unpleasant odor.

Over time, the skin between the toes becomes soft and moist. The patient may experience cellulite and soft tissue bacterial lesions. At the first sign of infection, you should use an antifungal spray. If after two weeks of therapy the ailment has not receded, you should consult a specialist. To prevent fungal infections, it is important to walk in your own shoes on the beach, gym, sauna, swimming pool. If you have a tendency to sweat your feet, it is recommended to use talcum powder to keep your feet dry.

Foul-smelling stools are a sign of lactose intolerance

If you start to notice an unusual stool odor, this may be a signal of lactose intolerance. You cannot ignore the symptom; you should immediately check with a gastroenterologist. Pathology occurs when the small intestine cannot produce the required amount of lactase (an enzyme that helps digest the sugar found in dairy products).The violation leads to the fact that lactose is sent directly to the intestine, where fermentation occurs under the influence of microflora.

Symptoms of the disease are loose stools with a bad smell, bloating, flatulence, vomiting, colic. Lactose intolerance is a common pathology that affects more than 60% of the world’s population. In all patients, the disease can manifest itself in different ways. As a rule, 200 ml of milk or a serving of ice cream is enough to feel unpleasant symptoms of the disease.

If you notice that after consuming dairy products you have an unpleasant stool odor or other symptoms of a disorder, you should not ignore the problem.The cause of lactose intolerance can be serious diseases of the pathology of the gastrointestinal tract (gastrointestinal tract) – Crohn’s disease and others. In addition, the gastroenterologist may prescribe lactase enzyme tablets to help regulate the absorption of milk by the body.

Ammonia amber or urine odor – problems with the kidneys and genitourinary system

Another specific odor that cannot be ignored is urine ammonia amber. According to Jamin Brambatta, M.D. from Orlando, a UTI (urinary tract infection) may be the cause of the pungent odor of urine.The appearance of a symptom is explained by the ingress of pathogenic bacteria into the urethra and bladder. UTIs are more often diagnosed in women because of the anatomical features of the body structure. The appearance of a suspiciously strong amber urine should not be ignored. Laboratory tests will allow the urologist to analyze the situation and make an accurate diagnosis.

Repulsive breath from the mouth – evidence of a sleep disorder (apnea) or a bacterial infection in the nasopharynx

Persistent problems with bad breath that cannot be ignored may indicate a bacterial infection in the nasopharynx.The vital activity of pathogenic microorganisms provokes the appearance of a repulsive odor. Even regular brushing and rinsing the mouth does not help to fight the problem. The presence of a symptom is a serious reason for visiting an otolaryngologist. The doctor will diagnose and prescribe the appropriate therapy.

If bacterial infections are ruled out, sleep apnea (respiratory arrest during sleep) may be the cause of the unpleasant odor. In this condition, the person breathes through the mouth. An unpleasant odor appears due to dry mouth.At the same time, bacteria multiply rapidly, as a result of which the patient has an unpleasant smell from the mouth. Apnea is a serious snoring problem that requires qualified treatment.

5 body odors you shouldn’t ignore. What is the body trying to tell you?

If you’ve just finished a grueling workout or ate a burger with onions, it’s no surprise that you’ll be the source of a bad smell.In most cases like this, a simple shower, deodorant, or toothpaste will easily fix the situation. But there are situations where things are not so simple.

Your body odor can really tell you about your health. According to recent studies in Sweden, certain diseases can cause a unique, distinct odor.

So what are the “scents” you should pay attention to as soon as possible? Below we outline the 5 main body odors that can signal serious health problems, and explain what you should do when they occur.

1. Fruity breath is a symptom of diabetes

According to Robert Gabbey, Ph.D. at the Joslyn Diabetes Center in Boston, a complication of diabetes called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) that occurs when insulin levels in the body drop and blood sugar levels rise. People with first-degree diabetes tend to have this symptom more often than those with second-degree diabetes.

What happens in this case: your body cannot produce the energy necessary for proper functioning, so fatty acids are broken down to produce it.This contributes to the buildup of acidic substances called ketones in your blood. One of these substances is acetone (the same one used to remove nail polish). He is the cause of the appearance of fruity odor from the mouth. You yourself may not feel it until someone tells you about it, but doctors are able to smell this smell as soon as you cross the threshold of the room.

The consequences of DKA can be very serious, even fatal. It can cause frequent vomiting and urination, causing your body to lose fluid at a dangerous rate.DKA usually occurs in conjunction with other diabetes symptoms such as fatigue, blurred vision and unnecessary weight loss, but in most cases they occur simultaneously, which inhibits diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, if you notice a fruity breath along with any of your other symptoms, especially fatigue, dry mouth, or abdominal pain, go to the hospital immediately.

After your doctors have tested your blood for ketones, you will need to focus on restoring lost fluids and maintaining normal blood sugar levels with insulin.

2. Smelly feet – a symptom of foot fungus

Don’t you have the strength to endure the persistent “aroma” of your sneakers? It’s all the fault of a fungal infection. According to the American Orthopedic Association (AMOA), if you notice that the skin around your toes is dry and flaky, or has redness and blistering, you most likely have a foot fungus.

Your feet can also give off an unpleasant odor caused by bacteria and fungus that eats away at your skin and toes, ”says Cameron Rohsar, Ph.D., professor of clinical dermatology at Mount Sinay Hospital in New York.If you scratch your leg and then touch it to other parts of the body, you risk spreading the fungus to them (for example, to the groin or armpits). This can cause unpleasant odors in these areas.

Also, if you ignore the foot fungus, the skin between your toes will become too soft and damp, making it a magnet for many bacteria. By doing this, you run the risk of earning other complications, such as cellulite, a bacterial infection of the soft tissues.

So if you notice any of the above symptoms, try antifungal sprays.If the problem persists after two weeks of use, the dermatologist will be able to study the causes of the fungus in more detail and prescribe a course of treatment.

Since foot fungus is just one of the nasty skin conditions you can get in the gym, protect yourself from re-infection by wearing athletic shoes in the locker room and using talcum powder on your feet if they sweat a lot.

3. Foul-smelling stools are a symptom of lactose intolerance

When your small intestine does not produce enough of an enzyme called lactase, it is unable to digest lactose, the sugar found in dairy products, says Ryan Ungaro, MD. , Associate Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, Mount Sinay Hospital, New York.

So instead of blood, your small intestine directs lactose straight to the intestine, where it ferments. This can lead to loose, foul-smelling stools, bloating and a pungent odor of gas, Ungaro says.

Lactose intolerance is quite common. According to the National Institutes of Health, 65 percent of people have problems digesting dairy products. Most of them require only 12 grams of lactose (about two hundred milliliters of milk or one serving of ice cream) to cause alarming symptoms.

So if your gas or stool smells especially bad after consuming dairy products, make an appointment with your doctor. He will be able to make an accurate diagnosis and rule out more serious diseases such as Crohn’s disease. The gastroenterologist will also help you determine the acceptable daily lactose intake.

4. Bad smelling urine is a symptom of a urinary tract infection

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause a pungent urine odor, ”says Jamin Brambatt, MD, an Orlando urologist.This is due to bacteria such as E. coli entering your urinary tract and urethra, where they then multiply in your bladder.

UTIs are more common in women than in men because they have a shorter urethra. So if you notice that your urine smells suspiciously strong, contact your doctor, who will carry out the necessary tests and determine the cause of the pungent odor.

5. Bad breath – a symptom of apnea

If your breath in the morning is characterized by an unpleasant odor, even if you regularly brush your teeth, it may be all the fault of undetected apnea – a disorder due to which during sleep your breathing is interrupted.

Apnea can lead to snoring, causing you to breathe through your mouth all night. This contributes to a dry mouth, which is a common cause of bad odor in the morning, says Raj Dasgupta, M.D., assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Southern California.

If you suffer from daytime sleepiness and snoring and have ruled out other possible causes of bad breath, it is best to consult your doctor. It is important to diagnose apnea on time, because without timely intervention, it can cause serious consequences, such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

9 unpleasant body odors that can signal health problems

Beauty Health

What does the appearance or change of body odor mean? The onset or development of the disease. It is better to know the symptoms right away in order to have time to react.

Each of us has its own unique smell: biologically and evolutionarily it is justified – a mother can recognize her own baby in this way, even without seeing him, the sense of smell tells us about the approach of a potentially suitable partner for reproduction.Body odor changes with age, becoming very intense and harsh during puberty, but sometimes it can change for other reasons. These symptoms should not be triggered – it is better to see a doctor as soon as possible.

1. Pungent fish smell

There is a disease in which the human body smells strongly of fish – trimethylaminuria, this is a genetic mutation and it is impossible to help in this case. If the skin of a healthy person begins to smell like this, then we are talking about a violation of microflora and the accumulation of decay products, which for some reason have ceased to be excreted normally from the body.

2. Smell of wet sheep wool

Sweat of people of both sexes starts to smell like that if adrenal function is impaired: you need to clarify the diagnosis and get a treatment strategy from a doctor, consult an endocrinologist.

3. The body “smells like cats” even after a shower

Thus, the body gets rid of excess nitrogen in the blood – sweat begins to smell like ammonia. This symptom may indicate kidney disease or a lack of moisture with a protein diet.Another reason for the phenomenon lies in infection with bacteria that cause gastritis or ulcers – in this case, the smell comes from the mouth.

4. Sticky sweat with a pungent odor on the palms

Stress causes sweating differently than sports or heat. In this case, moisture is released from the apocrine glands – sweat of a pungent odor and a different, thicker consistency than usual. If you sweat for no apparent reason, it is worth visiting an endocrinologist – you may have malfunctioning of the thyroid gland.

5. The breath smells like rotten apples

This relatively pleasant aroma is given out by diabetics – it means that there is not enough insulin in the body. With a lack of this important hormone, the breakdown of fats begins, and not glucose for fuel. If dry mouth, vomiting or other unpleasant sensations are added to the smell, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

6. The smell of acetone from the mouth

The most common and relatively harmless reason is a lack of carbohydrates in the diet.Do not get too carried away with a protein diet, since it can disrupt the functioning of the liver and kidneys. Another option is the presence of viruses, bacteria and microbes in the body. The smell disappears after the correct treatment.

7. Acetic smell after training

The reason for this is propionic acid. When bacteria break down a person’s sweat, they release a chemical that is very similar in composition to vinegar. In principle, this is completely normal if there are no other symptoms.All you need to do is shower and use deodorant. If the condition worries you in a complex manner, it is better to consult a doctor – perhaps you have hormonal disorders.

8. Strong smell of sweat in the absence of physical activity and in the cool season

Doctors diagnose in this case bromhydrosis or “fetid sweat” – in this case we are talking about a specific mechanism of decomposition of the secretion of sweat glands by bacteria. This feature is individual, no treatment exists, except for “clogging” the odor with deodorants.It is worth noting that the consumption of onions, garlic, and alcohol tends to increase the odor of sweat, even in healthy people.

9. Changes in scalp odor and dandruff

Usually, such changes are accompanied by increased sebum secretion – the hair constantly looks dirty, the head itches. A change in the microflora of the head is possible as a result of stress, a decrease in immunity, or due to a sharp drop in weight in either direction. An unbalanced diet can also worsen the situation.

In what diseases does an unpleasant odor emanate from the body

Where does the smell of sweat come from?

Under normal conditions, the human body does not have a pronounced smell of sweat or other secretions, provided that all rules of hygiene and care are fully observed.Often, an unpleasant smell of sweat occurs with hyperhidrosis (increased activity of the sweat glands), problems with hygiene or various infections, somatic diseases or metabolic disorders.

A person’s nose almost does not pick up the special body odor and the smell of sweat, if the person is healthy and washes on time. But at the subconscious level, the human brain perceives certain smells emanating from the body – pheromones. It is according to their level that people select the most suitable partners for themselves in terms of genetic characteristics.But these substances trap special cells in the nose, and pheromones have nothing to do with the smell of sweat. If sweating is intensified, the skin is sticky and the smell of sweat literally knocks off the feet with its sharpness, has a sour, putrid or sugary-sweet, and sometimes chemical aroma, we can talk about the presence of a serious illness.

Which doctor should I contact?

If you suddenly began to feel a smell from a distance or it seems to you that you are smelling an aroma that actually does not exist, then you should immediately visit the clinic for a comprehensive diagnosis of the whole organism.Otherwise, you risk learning about an unpleasant ailment when it is too late. Any self-medication options in this case are highly discouraged.

In most cases, people seek help from a general practitioner or otolaryngologist. Diseases of the ENT organs in this case are considered the most common option, but one should not exclude the fact that a specialist can send you to another doctor if he does not find a problem in his part. For diagnostics, modern equipment is used or a classic examination of the respiratory system and the oral cavity.

If we are talking about any psychological disorders, then the diagnosis can be complicated several times, especially if the patient is experiencing just phantom odors. In addition to anamnesis, the main tool for detecting psychological diseases is special equipment for diagnosing the nervous system.

What does disease smell like?

Doctors say that sometimes, just by the smell of the patient’s body, they can already suspect they have certain diseases, for example, diabetes, especially in the decompensated stage.But not only this pathology can be recognized thanks to the sense of smell, but also many others associated with significant disruptions in metabolic processes. For example, a persistent acetone odor emanating from the body will be a reason to exclude endocrine diseases, as well as digestive problems. In addition, amber-like methods to give kidney or liver diseases, as well as some pathogenic bacteria, viral infections and fungal pathologies.

In the presence of a particular disease, metabolic processes fail, intermediate metabolic products are formed, in particular, in the presence of an acetone odor – ketone bodies (usually formed by lipid breakdown), which together with sweat fall on the surface of the body, evaporate and smell …In the presence of diabetes, an increase in such an aroma indicates the threat of a ketoacidotic coma, which requires immediate medical attention.

Diagnostic procedures

Modern medicine presents a whole range of diagnostic measures aimed at identifying a specific disease. Here is just a small list of methods that allow you to recognize an ailment, the symptom of which is an unpleasant odor:

  • electroencephalography – allows you to establish or exclude epilepsy;
  • computed tomography – detects fractures of the skull and brain tumors;
  • Magnetic resonance imaging – detects inflammation and hematomas in the brain.

And these were just the basic procedures that your doctor can prescribe. Do not forget about the usual diagnostic methods that have been used in polyclinics for several decades. Although it should be noted that modern medicine is gradually pushing them into the background.

The body smells strong: what does the kidneys and the thyroid gland have to do with it?

Often the body smells like acetone or urine in the presence of kidney pathologies. This is due to a violation of the full excretion of metabolic products by these organs – ketone bodies, urea and ammonia.They accumulate in the blood plasma and, together with the sweat fluid, get to the surface of the skin. In this case, when the water evaporates, the aromatic molecules give the body such a strong odor. Against the background of such a body odor, such manifestations as hypertension, swelling in the legs and face, urinary disorders and back pain, appetite disorders and nausea will also speak in favor of kidney problems.

If the body smells like acetone, there is a sharp weight loss and irritability, sleep and appetite are disturbed, it is worth checking the thyroid gland, often its vigorous activity forms similar symptoms.

Garlic treatment

Garlic normalizes the functioning of the male genital area. It helps to eliminate diseases in which a man’s sperm smells like fish, restores testosterone production, strengthens the walls of blood vessels, thins the blood and has an antibacterial effect. Its use increases libido and prevents problems with potency. Methods for treating the smell of fish and other pathologies with garlic:

  • use fresh and ready-made – no more than three heads per day;
  • sitz baths – 150 grams of raw materials for 3 liters of water;
  • tinctures for ingestion – 400 g of garlic, mix 700 ml of vodka and leave for two days, drink a teaspoon 2-3 times a day.

It is not recommended to carry out therapy for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. If discomfort occurs in the digestive system, treatment should be discontinued.

A man can smell like fish for various reasons. Initially, you should be more careful about personal hygiene. With the further presence of odor, a consultation with a urologist is necessary. For the prevention of genital diseases, it is recommended to visit a doctor 1-2 times a year.

Bacteria give smell and not only

If a person’s skin smells unbearably of cats, and he does not have a couple of dozen fluffy animals in the house, it is worth excluding the presence of dangerous bacteria in his body.Thus, such aromas can be produced by tuberculosis bacteria or digestive pathologies. Sometimes kidney inflammation caused by opportunistic bacteria that got there from the intestines also gives a similar smell.

If it is the smell of vinegar, other bacteria are to blame for its development, leading to purulent-inflammatory processes in the bronchi and lungs, as well as vitamin deficiency, and women also have breast problems.

Root Cause

Trimethylaminuria syndrome is caused by the accumulation of trimethylamine in the body.It is formed as a decay product during the digestion of food. The condition is often caused by a serious genetic disorder with the FMO3 mutation. This substance is excreted in urine, feces, sweat, exhaled air. Has a specific smell of fresh or rotting fish.

In an organism without pathologies, FMO3 synthesizes the compound trimethylamine N-oxide. The substance does not smell like anything, leaves the body unnoticed by humans. The absence of FMO3 indicates abnormal liver function, which is unable to break down the N-oxide.FMO3 destroys nicotine, cancer drugs, antidepressants, preventing positive results.

When and what can leather smell?

There are special odors that the skin can exude in certain pathologies, they are so specific that they can be one of the criteria for the diagnosis. So, if the skin smells like rotten fish, it is necessary to exclude fungal, microbial infections and metabolic pathologies, especially protein. A sweet or rotten smell from the skin and from the mouth is typical for diphtheria, and the aroma of hydrogen sulfide is often found in peptic ulcer disease or dyspeptic disorders.

In case of disruption of the adrenal glands to produce hormones, the skin can exude the scent of sheep’s wool, and the specific smell of old age will often be evidence of problems with the thyroid gland and pituitary gland. An unpleasant smell of rotten meat can occur in cancer patients due to the processes of tissue decay.

Such odors are usually persistent, poorly eliminated when taking a shower and using deodorants, and not only natural folds and areas of high sweating smell, but the entire surface of the skin.A similar problem should be solved not at home in the shower, using folk remedies and soap, but in the doctor’s office. A detailed questioning and identification of provoking factors is required, as well as examination and testing to identify metabolic disorders and pathologies that lead to such odors. Often, after the initial examination, the therapist or dermatologist send the patient for additional consultations with narrowly specialized doctors – neurologists, endocrinologists or infectious disease specialists.

Could it be a violation of the sense of smell?

If you keep asking yourself the question: “Why do I really smell smells that are not there?”, Then you should also take into account the fact that the cause of the disorder may actually lie in a violation of the olfactory analyzer.There may be several options for such a disorder:

  • hormonal fluctuations – most often observed during pregnancy;
  • the use of medicines and various preparations after intoxication;
  • endocrine disorders of the body – diabetes mellitus or hypothyroidism;
  • various psychological illnesses, such as schizophrenia;
  • Brain tumor or traumatic brain injury.

Also, do not forget about such a concept as phantom odors.Just try to imagine that you smell gas or fish. The nose starts to pick up a familiar scent right away, doesn’t it? If you do this trick all the time, then getting rid of phantom odors will be very problematic.

Odor when overweight

A particular problem is body odor when overweight. Fat people are prone to excessive sweating and unpleasant odors due to increased metabolism. But the body does not always smell only because of the extra pounds, against the background of obesity, diabetes or thyroid disorders can develop, iodine deficiency or kidney disease, hypertension or infections are formed.Therefore, an increase in body odor in the presence of excess weight is also a reason for visiting a doctor and additional examination.

Preparation before intercourse

If a man is afraid that he will smell of fish before intimacy, then he should carry out hygienic procedures in advance. The genitals should be washed no earlier than an hour before sex. To enhance the effect, you can take a sitz bath with an antibacterial composition. After carrying out all the manipulations, you should put on clean linen.In the absence of the possibility of full personal hygiene, it is recommended to use wet wipes.

To reduce the smell of fish in men, hair removal in the groin will help. They can be shortened or shaved off completely with scissors or a trimmer.

The individuality of the aroma of each person

Each person has his own individual smell, which is due to the work of the endocrine system and the normalization of metabolism in the body.

Male and female microflora have significant differences, therefore physiology is significantly different, which is manifested in the individuality of the smell.Women have a pronounced aroma with a sour smell reminiscent of dampness.

Men, on the other hand, have a sharper and more concentrated odor, which is explained by the active production of male hormones and is felt much stronger. Therefore, the smell of sweat is more pronounced and has a bitter taste.

Diagnostics

Fishy odor appears periodically, the patient does not always feel it, the doctor can hear it. The most reliable research method is urine analysis to determine the amount of trimethylamine, N-oxide.Additionally, a specialist can prescribe an ultrasound examination, diagnostics of the digestive organs. Be sure to examine the blood. It is not difficult to determine trimethylaminuria, it is more difficult to understand the root cause. Only after its clarification is it possible to completely heal or significantly reduce symptoms in the case of a genetic disease.

Reviews

Reviews on the elimination of an unpleasant (stinking) smell of sweat have different dynamics. Since in this case, the treatment depends on the cause that caused the characteristic discomfort.

I remember that after giving birth I also had a terrible smell of sweat, and I went to the doctor, who explained that there was a restructuring of the hormonal background. Severe stress, and with the adaptation of the body, everything should return to normal. And so it happened.

Elena, Stavropol

As an experienced doctor with extensive experience in medical practice, I want to say that the appearance of smelly sweat requires clarification of the cause of its appearance. Moreover, if there is a slight odor, then, most likely, everything is within the normal range.So one needs to closely monitor the clinical boards in the body.

Oksana, Moscow

Other Causes

The appearance of a fishy smell in sweat can be not only a genetic disease, no less often such symptoms are the result of the lifestyle that a person prefers to lead. This usually applies to natural causes, such as:

  • the appearance of excess weight;
  • food preference for spicy or spicy dishes;
  • synthetic fabrics when choosing clothes;
  • non-compliance with personal hygiene.

As a rule, such conditions are easily amenable to correction and, when the provoking factors are eliminated, the offensive sweat disappears within a short time. It is much worse when the change in the smell of sweat is the result of diseases, even acquired ones, and not of a genetic nature. Until the underlying pathology is corrected, the smell of sweat, reminiscent of fish, will return.

Diet therapy

Is the main or auxiliary method of therapy. Foods high in lecithin and choline, which cause fermentation and make it difficult to digest food, are excluded from the diet.

Lecithin is vegetable, animal, industrial, it is contained in the following products:

  • Soy;
  • Legumes;
  • Sunflower oil;
  • Nuts;
  • Sunflower seeds;
  • Wheat, grain;
  • Rice;
  • Avocado;
  • Cabbage;
  • Buckwheat;
  • Yeast;
  • Carrots;
  • Olives;
  • Fish;
  • Seafood;
  • Caviar;
  • Milk, dairy products;
  • Chicken, beef;
  • Liver, kidneys;
  • Egg yolk;
  • Chocolate, sweets, cocoa;
  • Ice cream;
  • Sauces, ketchups, mayonnaises;
  • Biscuits, muffins;
  • Margarine;
  • Sweet pastries;
  • White bread, wheat products.

In addition, the following should be excluded:

  • Carbonated drinks;
  • Alcohol;
  • Fatty, spicy, fried foods;
  • Canned food;
  • Smoked products.

Avoid overeating, exclude snacks at night, a hearty dinner before bedtime. Eat slowly, chewing food thoroughly.

Helpful hints

To avoid secondary trimethylaminuria, you must:

  • Control your weight;
  • Observe hygiene;
  • Wear natural fabrics;
  • Take hormonal preparations in case of urgent need;
  • Timely treat gastrointestinal diseases, prevent chronic processes;
  • Avoid stressful situations, depression, nervous exhaustion;
  • Eat right, lead a healthy lifestyle.

Antiperspirants should not mask the fishy smell of sweat. It is allowed to use deodorants that destroy bacteria on the surface of the skin, but do not interfere with the natural processes of sweating. Antiperspirants based on aluminum salts clog pores, preventing breakdown products from leaving the body.

5 of your scents that can tell you about health problems

Everyone knows that the smell of feces and urine changes depending on what we ate and drank.And if a couple of days after the party (or whatever reason you had to overeat and get drunk) you recognize the familiar “aroma” – there is nothing to worry about. However, when the smell has changed and remains so for a long time, it is worth consulting with a specialist. To be healthy, you must learn to listen to your body. Perhaps it gives signals that it’s time to improve your health. We will talk about five key fragrances, which, according to doctors, are strictly forbidden to ignore.

1.Sweet breath

It is normal to have a sweet smell from the mouth after eating a dessert or chocolate bar. But if it is always present, no matter what you ate (shrimp with garlic, for example), do not take it lightly. A sweet, or (as many call it) fruity, smell may indicate problems with the pancreas, which, in turn, insures against diabetes.

The aroma may be due to the reduction in the production of insulin by the cells of the pancreas, which leads to an increased level of glucose in the blood.It enters the pulmonary bloodstream, and then into the bronchi. Thus, a sweet smell from the mouth appears.

If you like to drink – know: with liver pathologies, approximately the same mechanism is triggered. The liver converts ethyl alcohol into glucose, then into carbon dioxide and water, after which it is excreted both in the urine and through the respiratory system. If someone you know (or maybe a girl after a kiss) told you about a sweet smell from your mouth, go to the hospital.

2. The smell of rotting from the mouth

As taught from childhood, you brush your teeth in the morning and in the evening.But even after thorough cleaning and rinsing, the musty breath does not disappear. This happens after tooth extraction due to the negligence of a specialist who forgot a piece of the root, and that now rotting in your mouth. This is not scary, because by contacting dentistry, you can get rid of the rotten root. But sometimes this smell indicates a serious problem.

It may be a violation – apnea. During sleep, breathing is suppressed, and you begin to breathe through your mouth. Oxygen enters the oral cavity, which creates favorable conditions for the reproduction of harmful bacteria, which, in turn, provoke the appearance of a putrid odor.

It is worth keeping in mind that the body of a healthy person does not exude unpleasant and pungent odors. And if you sense any foul-smelling signals, consider this as an excuse to see a doctor. We are not encouraging you to paranoidly sniff at all of the above, but it is important to understand that the sooner you know if you have any health problems, the easier it will be to deal with them.

3. Unpleasant foot odor

Do you regularly wash your feet and keep your shoes clean, but your boots still stink, and the smell from your feet haunts you even in your sleep? You can refer to terry socks, but the point is different.These are all signs of a fungal infection. The fungus provokes an unpleasant odor, and as it spreads, the situation worsens. If you are a fan of diagnosing yourself, look at your feet: redness, flaky skin, cracks – these are all signs of foot fungus.

Still, before you diagnose yourself, you should pay attention to your shoes. If it is made of synthetic material, your legs are simply suffocating in it. By the way, when you deal with the smell of feet (if it’s still a fungus), you need to get rid of the stench in your shoes.Hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine will help you with this. Pour (just pour, not drop a couple of drops) one of these liquids into your shoes and leave to dry.

4. Pungent smell of urine

Yes, sometimes it happens after the holidays, when you drank a lot of alcohol and ate everything that was on the table. It’s not scary. But if you notice that urine smells harsh and unpleasant for a long time, then most likely we are talking about a urinary tract infection. This aroma is provoked by pathogenic bacteria, due to which inflammatory processes begin in the internal organs.Don’t panic, the reason may be harmless. But to be sure, it is better to visit the examination room.

5. Foul smell of feces

It is obvious that excrement and gases do not in principle exude a scent like Dior’s Sauvage. But you must admit that there are times when it becomes especially harsh and unpleasant. And if the nasty smell does not go away for a long time, you should pay attention to your health. Most often this is due to insufficient production of an enzyme that digests lactose. In such a situation, it is better to give up dairy products or reduce their use.But there may be other reasons, which, of course, the doctor knows better than us.

What diseases can be recognized by smell

Not only eaten garlic or uncleaned teeth can cause bad breath. Many diseases also have their own characteristic aroma. Even Hippocrates knew that some ailments can be recognized by the stench. For example, with liver diseases, a specific sweetish sugary smell of urea is felt. Along with the smell of exhaled air, the usual aroma of the body and all body fluids can change.Such changes can be a sign of metabolic disorders, diseases of the digestive or respiratory systems, malignant diseases, and even Alzheimer’s disease. By the way, even in ancient times, doctors considered odor as one of the diagnostic methods. Nowadays, scientists are actively working on the creation of a so-called artificial nose – a device that, based on the aroma of the body and human secretions, can suggest the type of disease. Therefore, experts are increasingly calling for more attention to changes in the aroma of your body and loved ones.

What is body odor

Everyone has their own unique aroma and it can change during life. How we smell depends on the skin glands, including sweat and sebaceous glands, on the activity of bacteria that live on the surface of the body, as well as on what we eat, drink, smoke, and what medications we take. Nevertheless, there are many specific odors that can appear regardless of age or lifestyle and are a signal that it is time to visit a doctor.

Body scent is a rather complex and multicomponent mixture of compounds.But if a person observes the basic rules of hygiene, then the natural aroma of his body is barely perceptible. The sick is a different matter. And it’s not so much about self-care moments as about body chemistry. It has been proven that an infection, penetrating into the human body, is capable of changing its aroma.

Depending on the condition, the stench can come from different parts of the body – from the legs to the head. Sometimes it can be caused by a local problem, in other cases it can be systemic in nature. For example, the mouth may not be the cause of bad breath.

Smell and the immune system

According to scientific research, in people whose immune system fights against pathogens, the body acquires a pronounced specific aroma. Moreover, it begins to appear after only 4 hours after the reaction of the immune system to the pathogen. That is, the body of the same person in a healthy state and during illness smells differently.

One of the reasons for this, according to experts, are specific substances that enter the bloodstream when the immune system is activated.Moreover, scientists have found that the stronger the patient’s immune response, the more unpleasant the smell of sweat. Various diseases and conditions have their own unique specific aroma. For example, with scrofula, a smell resembling stale beer appears, the smell of acetone can be caught with diabetes mellitus, starvation or thyrotoxicosis, with typhoid fever – a bread aroma, with diphtheria – sweetish putrid. The body of a person with diabetic ketosis smells like decaying apples, and when they are unable to metabolize methionine, the aroma of boiled cabbage appears.

In addition, the researchers found that various volatile substances are formed in the bodies of people with cancer: alkanes, formaldehyde, pentane and benzene derivatives, which affect body aroma, changing it to similar to the smell of missing meat.

What the smell will tell you …

We all know how unpleasant it is to be around a person who sweats a lot. Especially if his sweat is very strong and smells bad.

Acrid stench. Unfortunately, during certain periods of life, even a healthy person can sweat more than usual and the secretion of the sweat glands at this time has a strong aroma.This applies to adolescents during puberty, as well as women during menopause. In this case, sweating is caused by a change in hormonal levels. But in other periods of life, a very pungent smell of sweat should be alarming. It can be caused by either a specific diet or health problems. A pungent odor may indicate an overactive thyroid gland. In this case, the stench is most caught under the armpits and in the genital area.

Sheep wool. In a person suffering from adrenal hyperfunction, the body acquires a scent similar to that of sheep’s wool.

Acetone. If a body odor resembles acetone, it may indicate liver disease, endocrine disorders, a lack of carbohydrates in the diet, or infection with viruses or bacteria. Yet the most common cause of acetone body odor is diabetes. What is the connection between acetone and diabetes? When the body lacks insulin, which is what happens in diabetes, glucose builds up in the tissues, which in turn leads to an excess of ketone bodies. They are excreted in the urine and sweat.And it is these substances that give the secret a sharp acetone smell.
If the smell of acetone is accompanied by insomnia or constant drowsiness and loss of strength, loss of appetite, then thyroid dysfunction may be present.
Vinegar smell. If a person sweats a lot and the smell of sweat resembles vinegar, then this may indicate endocrine problems, infectious and inflammatory diseases, mastopathy, vitamin B or D deficiency, iodine deficiency. And if, in addition to a strange odor, a cough, fever and weakness appear, this may indicate the development of tuberculosis.

Urea odor. If a characteristic odor of urea is clearly detected from a person, this can be perceived as a signal of the onset of kidney failure, with the manifestation of uremia – the accumulation of nitrogenous toxins in the blood, which cause the smell of uremia from the body and during breathing.

Honey aroma. The sweetish, honey-like scent of the body is a very alarming signal. Such changes may indicate the presence in the body of Pseudomonas aeruginosa – one of the most dangerous infections.It causes diseases of the respiratory tract, otitis media, inflammation of the facial sinuses, promotes abscesses and purulent processes in wounds, and can also cause meningitis. But what is most dangerous, some strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa are resistant to antibiotics. Therefore, the honey aroma of sweat requires immediate medical attention.

… from the mouth

Bad breath can be the result of improper oral hygiene, bacterial infection, caries. However, there are times when the odor cannot be removed despite thorough brushing or antibiotic treatment.In this case, it is important to pay attention to what exactly the exhaled air smells like.

Acetone? This is a sign that it’s time to see your doctor and check your blood sugar and ketone levels in your urine. A sweet acetone smell, reminiscent of fermented apples, is often a symptom of ketoacidosis, which can occur with diabetes. Sometimes acetone breath odor can also appear in people who are losing weight intensively on a low-carb diet.

Does the exhaled air have a musty and sweet odor? This could be a sign of liver failure.If ammonia is felt from the mouth, it is a symptom of insufficient kidney function. If the exhaled air smells like sulfur or rotten cabbage, this may indicate the presence of Helicobacter pylori bacteria in the stomach, which causes diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

A musty odor combined with heartburn and an unpleasant taste in the mouth is the most common symptom of stomach problems. This may be a manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux. If an unpleasant odor accompanies abdominal pain, you should be checked for stomach or duodenal ulcers.

… intimate area

An unpleasant odor in the genitals can also indicate health problems that require treatment. In particular, for women, the smell of spoiled fish can be a wake-up call. The reason for this is not poor hygiene, but a bacterial vaginal infection, which can only be eliminated by fulfilling the prescriptions of the attending gynecologist. Another dangerous signal is the smell of yeast. In this case, the risk of fungal disease is high. It is impossible to ignore the appearance of a specific smell in the intimate area.It can indicate cervicitis, sexually transmitted diseases or even cancer.

The feet of a healthy, hygienic person should not smell bad. Unless he wears shoes made of unnatural materials or inappropriate socks. But if a person observes all the rules, and the smell still appears, then it’s time to contact a dermatologist. As a rule, this symptom indicates mycosis – a fungal disease of the feet.

… excrement

Metabolic products do not have a pleasant aroma and this is quite natural.But if the stool takes on a distinctly sour odor (especially when paired with diarrhea, bloating), there is a high risk of lactose intolerance. This means that the body is producing too little lactase, a digestive enzyme needed to properly break down the lactose contained in dairy products. Undigested dairy products begin to ferment in the intestines, forming gases and acids, which cause a specific stool odor.

A very pungent smell of urine should also alert you.If there is ammonia in it, it could indicate a urinary tract infection, such as cystitis or kidney disease. If the urine smells like acetone, then, as with breathing, this is most likely a sign of ketoacidosis. This is a rather dangerous condition that can lead to coma. Acetone odor in urine can be caused by fasting, low-carb diet, overactive thyroid, prolonged vomiting, or diarrhea. In any case, an unnatural smell of urine is a reason to undergo a medical examination.

Animals and Electronic Noses – New Diagnostic Methods

It is well known that animals are much more capable of recognizing aromas than humans. In addition, today specialists are increasingly diagnosing a violation of the olfactory function in people. Therefore, in recent years, animals have been attracted to work on the study of the aromas of the human body. It turned out that dogs can recognize cancer patients by smell. The accuracy of such an unusual “diagnosis” in different cases ranged from 68 to 90 percent.Interestingly, some dogs identified patients with early stage oncology by smell. But laboratory rats, as it turned out, can easily detect the smell of tuberculosis.

Still, scientists pin much more hopes on the so-called electronic (artificial) noses. These devices allow the detection and recognition of a range of specific aromas. Most of these devices have a sensor array that comes in contact with volatile compounds, causing changes in the sensors. Scientists have already tested this device to detect lung cancer, brain tumor, kidney disease, intestinal disease and diabetes in patients.

A strange smell is not always a sign of illness

It would be a mistake to say that an unusual body odor can occur solely due to illness …Often, uncharacteristic body aromas can be the result of the use of certain foods. But in this case, the stench persists for a relatively short time, while the changes caused by the disease are stable.

So, one of the most common causes of unpleasant sweat odor is spices – garlic, onions, hot spices, curry. Also, red meat and some very spicy herbs have the ability to give body odor a specific aroma. Lovers of coffee, strong tea, chocolate, alcoholic beverages and sugary soda should be prepared for the fact that the abuse of these products can also lead to increased sweating and the appearance of an unpleasant odor of body fluids.
Anyone who decides to switch to a low-carb diet should understand that this principle of nutrition will not only affect the figure (help to lose weight), but also cause changes in body aromas. A low-carb diet causes ketone bodies in the body to rise, which can cause the smell of acetone. Frequent consumption of dairy products in large quantities increases the levels of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan in the body, which can also trigger the formation of unpleasant odors. And of course, tobacco smoking affects the body aroma, which is why all smokers have a very specific smell.And we are not talking about clothes soaked in cigarette smoke, but about changes in the smell of sweat itself.
Diseases manifest themselves in different ways. One of the most common signs that something is wrong in the body is pain. But this is not the only symptom. Some diseases can be recognized by smell, usually unpleasant. What diseases these are and what smells should alert you, you already know.

Bad breath (halitosis)

Bad breath (halitosis)

Based on materials from the publication of D.M.Sc. Irina Makeeva and Ph.D. MM. Gurevich.

It is difficult to overestimate the role of smells in our life. Many likes and dislikes arise under the influence of smell, although often we do not even think about it.

The smell from the mouth can ruin a person’s life: he will not be hired, they will not want to continue acquaintance with him, colleagues will try to turn away or move away during a conversation …

As a rule, the owner of a bad breath does not feel it, he has long been accustomed to it, just as a “socialite” does not feel the perfume that she is doused with from head to toe.Bad breath is an alarm signal: something in the body is not in order. The cause of a bad smell can be both a stomach disease and a pathology of the ENT organs.

However, first of all, it is worth contacting the dentist. Pay attention to the language. It is no coincidence that doctors call it “the mirror of the stomach”. A thick white or yellow plaque indicates a problem in the digestive system and can itself be a source of a heavy odor. Consult a gastroenterologist, he will prescribe a specific diet for you.He will advise you to brush not only your teeth with a toothbrush, but also your tongue.

In chronic gastritis with low acidity, the digestion of protein substances slows down. The intake of gastric juice and enzyme preparations recommended by the doctor will help get rid of the smell. Bad breath is one of the symptoms of esophageal diverticulum (saccular protrusion of the esophageal wall).

Sour smell is possible in case of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, accompanied by increased acidity of gastric contents.Specific smells should be alarming, for example, acetone in case of diabetic coma, ammonia in case of renal failure in case of kidney disease; putrid odor with an abscess of the lung or bronchiectasis (pus accumulates in the resulting pockets of the bronchi). Such smells are a reason for immediate medical attention.

As a rule, bad breath accompanies gum disease, the presence of dental plaque, interdental pockets. Decayed teeth can also cause bad breath.If only the patient, along with the doctor, felt the smell that spreads during the preparation of a carious tooth! Often, the stench is so strong that the doctor is forced to change the mask many times. And if several teeth are affected by caries …

It is especially unpleasant to think about how many pathogens this person transmits when kissing. If a patient has so-called “pockets” – pathological depressions in the interdental spaces, then food debris usually gets stuck in them. It is almost impossible to remove them yourself, so the decay process begins.It is accompanied by pain, inflammation and naturally odor. No amount of toothpaste will help here. It is imperative that the dentist “clean” all of the pockets and provide treatment to promote their complete healing.

In practice, there are often cases when the removal of tartar alone is sufficient for halitosis to disappear. The fact is that the tartar is saturated with pathogenic microorganisms, which not only cause inflammation of the gum tissue, but also smell very unpleasant. In cases where the smell is associated with diseases of the hard tissues of the teeth or gum tissue, everything is solved quite simply: it is necessary to carry out sanitation, that is, a complete improvement of the oral cavity, and the problem will be solved.All that is needed is the patient’s desire and patience.

However, there are situations where halitosis has a more complex cause. For example, in some diseases of the salivary glands, the required amount of saliva does not enter the oral cavity, or the saliva is too viscous. This leads to disruption of the processes of self-cleaning of the oral cavity, which is accompanied by a bad smell.

“Smell” and many diseases of the mucous membrane. In these cases, only a doctor will give specific recommendations. Traditional medicine advises to eat oatmeal porridge in the morning in case of salivation disorders – it seems that oatmeal contributes to an increase in the amount of saliva secreted.The aromas of alcoholic hangover, tobacco, eaten garlic and onions irritate others. Is it possible to drown them out somehow? Of course you can.

The most affordable home remedy for odor control is raw apples. Eat them more often. Rinse with fresh dill infusion freshens your mouth well. Garlic or onion spirit will disappear if these odorous vegetables are seized with parsley or celery root. Eliminates bad breath with freshly brewed strong tea, including after wine, garlic and onions. For diseases of the oral mucosa in folk medicine, rinsing with infusions and decoctions of medicinal herbs has long been used.

They, along with anti-inflammatory action, have a good deodorizing effect. Use chamomile, sage, wild strawberry leaves, calendula, St. John’s wort, mint for these purposes. Usually grass (separately or in a mixture of several types) is brewed at the rate of a tablespoon per glass of boiling water, insisted, squeezed. Half a glass of warm infusion is enough for one rinse. It is best to do this after eating and after you have removed all food debris with a toothpick and then with a toothbrush and toothpaste or powder.

Repeat these procedures regularly at least after breakfast and dinner. If at lunchtime at work it is impossible to deal with your gums and teeth so thoroughly, make at least some fresh tea and rinse your mouth with it. For washing the tonsils, so that purulent plugs do not linger in them, an infusion of bitter wormwood is very effective. Brew one teaspoon of chopped dry wormwood with two glasses of boiling water, leave for 15 – 20 minutes, strain. Gargle several times a day.

A decoction of oak bark serves the same purpose.It has a powerful anti-rotting effect. Gastrointestinal diseases are often accompanied by excessive gas formation in the intestine – flatulence. This further aggravates bad breath. The same herbs will help to “pacify” fermentation processes. Only they need to be taken orally as a carminative.

Dill, parsley, caraway seeds, anise, peppermint, lemon balm, sage are known for this property. You can take 3/4 cup of warm infusion, for example, mint, rinse your mouth several times, and drink the rest.If the bad smell is associated with digestion, it is useful to take activated carbon (carbolene) – 1 tablet 3 times a day after meals. And, of course, the freshness of breath directly depends on how carefully and thoroughly you perform the usual hygienic procedures.

Alas, it has not yet become a rule for everyone: brush your teeth in the morning and evening with an elastic brush and paste for a few minutes in all directions, and rinse your mouth with warm water after each meal. Choose toothpastes that contain fluoride, calcium (this will strengthen the tooth enamel), herbal extracts that relieve inflammation of the oral mucosa and eliminate all unpleasant odors.

Elixirs with deodorants are especially good for refreshing the mouth during the day. 10 – 20 drops in half a glass of warm water – and you will have a fresh breath for a couple of hours. If, after a sandwich or candy you have eaten in a hurry, you do not have the opportunity to rinse your mouth, have some chewing gum in stock.

90,000 Great love: what scent will attract the ideal partner | Culture and Lifestyle in Germany and Europe | DW

Scientists from Dresden presented evidence of the decisive influence of natural body odor on the choice of a partner.In the course of a study conducted at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Dresden, it was revealed that a person, without realizing this, determines the optimal partner using the sense of smell, capturing the substances emitted by the body of another person at an unconscious level. Whether we like the other person or not depends, accordingly, not on perfumes or deodorants, but on the man’s and woman’s own natural body odor, to which the immune system mixes up its molecules.

Attraction of opposites

In life it is called love.Scientists, however, have long since found out that behind this inexplicable – from the point of view of poets – state lies a whole complex of complex chemical and physiological processes that occur in the human body at all stages of the development of relationships, from the moment of the first love to the grave. It does not matter where and under what circumstances the meeting takes place, whether you are in search or have already fulfilled the mission of procreation for a long time, at the first contact with any person of the opposite sex, the instincts programmed to continue life begin to calculate the probability of having children from this person.If external factors – height, weight, posture, tone of voice – suit the body, we go into the mode of rapprochement: a guy goes to get acquainted with a girl, the girl shows interest.

And this is where the most important and interesting thing happens. Nature requires procreation, but not with the first comer, but preferably with someone who will provide an improvement in the genetic material. By means of the so-called olfactory communication, the compatibility with the mating candidate is determined by smell.Dogs sniff each other when they meet. People start talking. What the conversation was about, however, no one really remembers afterwards. But this is not surprising, because real communication at the first contact is not in words, but through molecules. Both in dogs and in humans.

As shown by the experiment in Dresden, the most attractive were the smells, which signal the greatest genetic differences. “As it turned out, couples with different molecules of the class I major histocompatibility complex were more positive about body odor and sexuality of each other than couples who had identical leukocyte antigens.That is, opposites attract, “explained Jana Kromer, the author of a study she recently published as part of her dissertation. It is not rejected by the recipient’s body. In sex, it turns out the opposite: the more differences in immune systems, the better. “I also thought, – says Yana Cromer, – that love arises by chance as a result of mutual interest in two people who either fit each other, or not. “Nature, however, as such studies show, leaves nothing to chance.

Olfactory Communication

How does olfactory communication occur, which plays such an important, if not decisive, role in choosing a partner? It is known that living beings, including humans, secrete substances in micro doses that carry certain information and can be read by other living organisms. Pheromones, as these products of external secretion are called, penetrating the body through the sense of smell, can attract an individual of the opposite sex, or they can repel it.A person, as a full-fledged representative of the animal world, also emits and reads pheromones, but they are not recognized by him on a conscious level. Olfactory communication in humans occurs unconsciously.

Nature sniffs out the compatibility of a potential pair in a few seconds. If the molecules are mixed into an optimal cocktail, instincts begin to semaphores, pushing us to a speedy transition from the platonic phase to childbirth. The higher the compatibility at the biochemical level, the more we are drawn to each other.The greatest compatibility produces an effect comparable to a powerful explosion or short circuit. This is how you feel a sudden passion for a complete stranger or, in the language of romantics, love at first sight.

What happens next is just putting the finishing touches on it: now consciousness connects to scanning a potential partner and evaluates it for compatibility of phenotypic and behavioral patterns, that is, status in society, presence of humor, goals in life, and so on.If the cultural superstructure is in harmony too, the instincts give the final signal to turn on falling in love and, as they say, it starts …

But if the smell recognition did not give a positive result, the instincts give a “retreat”. From the point of view of evolution, it is only logical that nature prefers to pair carriers of different immune systems: the offspring will have a better chance of survival and resistance to various ailments.

The study involved more than 250 couples aged 18 to 60 years.Participants in the experiment were asked to rate their relationships and sex life, as well as report whether they want to have children. Then they took a sample of saliva and, based on its analysis, a comparison of the genetic material was made. Thus, the study carried out in Dresden is the first scientific experiment in which a significant number of people were examined, and the question of the desire to have children was also raised.

The study caused a huge resonance. After all, it explains, perhaps, why some couples stay together for a long time, while others lack harmony.It is also not surprising that the industry also showed interest in the research results – what perfumer does not dream of creating a purely individual scent or perfume that inspires everyone who breathes in a sense of true love.

Chapter 1

I didn’t come uninvited. He sent me a message. I never thought of killing him.

When I was getting ready, my hands were shaking. Not too much makeup: a drop of eyeliner, a little touch of blush and lipstick. He didn’t like “painted ladies”. That was what he called them. And laughed while quoting someone. Probably Shakespeare. He usually quoted him. That was Ralph. He didn’t just teach English literature – he lived and breathed it.

Making love, we were not alone in bed.It feels like Romeo and Juliet, Troilus and Cressida, Antony and Cleopatra were next to us. From time to time he allowed himself to drop a line or two of English poetry that was stored in his beautiful head. A girl who has no equal. Or: it makes some people starve, others satisfy. I easily memorized the quotes and after he left I googled on the Internet, surprised by his good memory. He made me feel special. A beauty. Another.

The evening was warm.I parked my car on a nearby street, out of sight of prying eyes. She walked quickly down the sidewalk to his house, her wide-brimmed hat pulled down over her eyes and her head lowered.

The street on which he lived was deserted at that hour. The sidewalk was strewn with petals from tall, fading trees, as if I had missed a wedding. The curtains on the windows of the neighboring house were pulled apart, giving my view an excellent view of the living room. Glancing along the facade, I made sure that no one was watching me, and walked by.

Ralph left the creaky gate open. As always when he was waiting for me. I slipped into it like a shadow and silently walked down the path to the front door, which glittered in the diffused evening light. The door has recently been painted. Of course, Helen negotiated with the painter. She generally agreed on everything and organized everything. Including Ralph’s life. Sometimes he joked about it. And at the same time he was not joking. He treated her too well. It hurts to admit, but the feeling between them has definitely not gone anywhere.Not love, of course. And obviously not passion. An involuntary admiration for each other. And a sense of duty.

He conducted literary seminars for teachers at our school. Once he read us his poem about Odysseus and Penelope – a little poem about love. This happened at the very beginning, when I was still trying to resist him. But even then he occupied all my thoughts. Like a girl in love, with a sinking heart, barely breathing, I made my way to high school, on its territory, to “accidentally” meet him.I wandered through the corridors, and my senses were so sharpened that I seemed to glow from attraction to him, like charged electrons glow. I will not even mention how disappointed I felt if I returned to my class without seeing him.

In his poem, he asked an interesting question: who was the real hero – Odysseus, who fought with a sword in his hands, or Penelope, who faithfully waited for him? Remaining faithful to her husband, she weaved the shroud and loosened the woven – and weaved again to loosen again

The time class was over and everyone was taking apart their jackets and coats, I pretended to leave alone, although I knew – we both knew – he would hurry after me and walk beside me, chatting on the go, to the parking lot of the elementary school, where I left my car.

– What inspired you to write such a poem? I asked barely audibly.

Squinting, he smiled and gave me a look that made me tremble.

– What do you think?

In an instant I realized: he dedicated his passionate verse to me. It was a salute to my chastity, my titanic efforts to stay loyal to Matthew, the guy who broke my heart when he left me almost two years ago. Ralph managed to see in me something that no one else saw. The real me.

A week later, accompanying me to the car after the next lesson of our group, he offered to stop by somewhere for a drink. I was ready for this. Blushing, without looking into his eyes, she immediately replied: “Yes.”

Why did I remember this, standing in front of the door? She brushed aside a tear, automatically noted how the watch flashed on my wrist, and took a couple of deep breaths to calm myself.

I didn’t know what to expect. Why did he send me this message? I felt devastated.For several weeks now, a piece has not reached my throat, and my hands, no matter how I clenched them into fists, trembled. The pills prescribed by the doctor to “help deal with depression,” and we both knew it was about depression, gave me mood swings. I was crying, then I was furious. In general, she was not herself. Even my colleagues at school began to notice my condition.

Having swallowed the lump that came up to my throat, I took in more air, then brought my hand to the door and knocked barely audibly, barely touching the wooden surface with my knuckles.The slightest knock so as not to wake Anna up. How he taught.

Chapter 2

While he was closing the door behind me, for a moment we were trapped in the awkward tightness of the corridor. He was so close that I felt the warmth of his body. The power emanating from him. My hand accidentally brushed his hand, which was hot even through the sleeve of his shirt.

He jerked as if from an electric shock. Everything inside me clenched. So, the connection between us has not been interrupted yet? After all, he reacts so violently … But he looked haunted, and he diligently looked away.

My legs were giving way. I hoped that he changed his mind, that he finally realized what a fool he was by leaving me, and called me because he wanted everything to be the same.

– Will you have a drink? He suggested.

Ralph led me into the kitchen through the hallway, past a table with neatly folded mail, past framed photographs on the walls, and past a basement door barely visible under the stairs. My heels tapped on the tiles of the tiled floor, and I instinctively tried not to make any noise and went on tiptoe.

Leaning against the counter – her kitchen counter – I watched him, as if recognizing him again. His wide shoulders under his shirt, which I pressed against when we made love, his special scent – a mixture of men’s sweat, fresh linen and shower gel. And this gesture … He always runs his fingers through his hair like that when he’s nervous. Ralph … I bit my lip.

Pouring wine into glasses, he handed one to me. Shiraz, his favorite. The bottle was on the counter, next to two glasses, even before I arrived.I wonder if Helen got this bottle? Making weekly purchases from an online store?

To hide my nervousness, I pretended to be looking at the shelves lined with cookbooks. Chinese cuisine, French, Italian, Middle Eastern … Spine to spine, in strict alphabetical order, by author. This is all Helen. Once a librarian is a librarian forever. How does he even have the strength to endure such a thing?

I turned to him again. The kitchen clock showed almost a quarter past nine.They were always in a hurry for five minutes. I knew the smallest details of their common life. Internal tension threatened to develop into pain, and I drank the wine faster than I should.

– Where is she?

– School affairs. Like some kind of conversation. About happiness, – Ralph grinned dryly, not taking his eyes off the floor.

We once had sex right here on the sterile kitchen table where they had breakfast every morning. He was turned on by the thought that Helen would not approve of not only his infidelity, but also such an unhygienic way of cheating.

– So … – I did my best to make my voice sound carefree – another trick to make Ralph want me. – Where do we start?

“We need to talk,” he replied, still not looking at me.

– We are already talking.

Fingers tightly squeezed the stem of the glass. For several weeks now, the most agonizing of my life, he ignored my messages. He did not answer the phone, avoided me in the school corridors, no matter how desperately I chased him, following him from class to class.I knew his schedule by heart.

He took a sip of wine.

– I understand it hurts you. I’m really sorry … But I never meant to …

Something inside me clenched again.

– What are you not going to?

Ralph was silent, and finally his gaze met mine for a moment. Wary and, it seemed, stupid.

– Sorry, but it’s over. I’m talking about our relationship. You have to stop.

I was speechless. Stay? And this after what he told me? Didn’t he swear his love to me? Didn’t he say how right it is that we are together? I was quite sure that in the end he would leave her, leave his librarian for me! I bit my lip.

He looked away again:

– I know you’re angry. Understand. But that only makes it worse.

– For you – maybe. “I had nothing more to lose.

Ralph shrugged.

– Please don’t. Everything is over. Sorry, but you can’t bring back the past. He shifted from foot to foot, his absent gaze now resting on the stove at the far end of the kitchen. “It’s not just that you’re going to hit harder than me. Or Helen. This will also affect Anna.

I snorted:

– Before you had to think. You are not just behaving immorally – your behavior has gone beyond the law.

He finished his wine.

– What law? I don’t do anything like that … you got it all wrong … ”He fell silent, embarrassed.

– Enough, Ralph. I know perfectly well what’s going on. – Putting the glass on the counter, I went up to him, forcing him to look at me. – And I’m not bluffing. Yes, you yourself understand that very well, don’t you? I’m talking seriously.

His pupils dilated. What did he expect? That I will shut up, step aside … and let him continue? I shook my head in disagreement with this scenario.

– Ralph, I warn you, I will not be silent. I’ll tell everyone. I’ll write to our directors. And it will be over with you. Do not you understand? And I’m not talking about your marriage. They will never let you even close to the school!

– They won’t believe you. Doubt appeared in his gaze. – There is no evidence. Moreover, this is not true.

He looked so worried and so… vulnerable. A lock of hair fell over his forehead, and I automatically reached out to push it back. How many times have I done this in the past? All is not yet lost. It can’t be that this is the end. We felt so good together.

We both did not move for a moment. I saw my reflection in his brown eyes. I became a part of him again.

Suddenly, standing on tiptoe, I kissed him on the lips. Actually, I didn’t intend to – it happened. Gently at first, then stronger. Under my pressure, his lips parted and my tongue slipped into his mouth.My hands darted awkwardly over his chest, feeling the heat of his body through his shirt.

Squeezing my shoulders, he muttered:

– Oh, Laura …

I flushed. Ralph wanted me. I felt his desire. This is the real reason why he called me. He was simply bewildered by an old-fashioned sense of duty to his family and shame for his behavior. He deserves the best.

Suddenly the feeling of power over him returned. It can still be reversed by walking on without stopping until he finally allows himself to surrender.We have not lost each other. And I still have a chance to make it mine. It’s not too late to burn out the pain that has plagued me for the past few weeks.

I pressed closer to him, my lips searched for his lips. Now he barely resisted, allowing himself to be kissed. Suddenly his hands slipped from my shoulders to my hips, and, as if waking up, he pulled me closer. Now he answered my kisses, and I trembled, triumphant and excited more and more. He wants me! I was right from the start! It remains only to bring everything to the end.Our kisses were filled with passion. I pulled out his shirt and slipped my arms under it. He trembled at the touch of my fingers. Pulling back, but not as confidently as before, Ralph glanced over at me. I ran my tongue over my lips.

– Oh Laura …

There was agony in his voice. I pushed him away and smiled invitingly. His eyes said everything. He went too far. And there was no turning back. Even though he was making plans for resistance, it was already too late. The passion that once flared up between us was not going to fade away.The victory was mine.

Taking the initiative, I grabbed his arm and dragged him into the living room. She pushed her onto the sofa, disrupting the order of the neatly arranged pillows, and sat on top. Ralph groaned, closed his eyes, threw back his head. Unbuttoning his shirt, I began to kiss his chest, going down lower and lower; my heart was pounding.

***

When we finished, I fell right on top of him. My legs, uncomfortably bent at the knees, were numb, my face buried in Ralph’s sweaty neck.

– Laura? He whispered in my ear.

– Yes? I kissed him on the corner of his mouth, inhaling the familiar scent.

Ralph opened his arms, then removed his arms. My naked back was immediately chilled. He turned on the couch, trying to move me.

– Oh no, don’t! I playfully tried to stop him.

Looks like he wasn’t in the mood. Of course he was stronger, so he easily pushed me into the pile of pillows. Defeated but happy, I watched him rise from the couch and walk across the room.My gaze consumed his body: narrow thighs, a long curve of the spine, muscular buttocks.

Lying on my back, I recalled his touch. And I imagined how Helen, returning home, would be primly sitting on this couch, watching TV and drinking tea, not having the slightest idea what we were doing here.

My body was slowly cooling down. I struggled to my feet, pulled on his crumpled shirt, which was lying on the floor, and went in search.

– Ralph?

The kitchen floor felt icy under my bare feet.Hunched over the phone, Ralph stood in the semi-darkness, directly opposite the doorway, and quickly dialed a message.

He turned around, saw me and shuddered. I smiled cheekily:

– Hey! What are you up to?

Imagining how seductive I look, I stepped towards him, feeling the soft fabric of his shirt slide over my skin.

He put the phone down on the kitchen counter.

I clung to him and looked up at him:

– Ready to repeat? Ralph looked away again.

“We can’t …” he answered after a moment’s hesitation. – I didn’t mean it …

Shyly squeezing past me, he walked back into the dimly lit hall. I grabbed onto it:

– Ralph, wait. What are you doing?

He pulled back. Beads of sweat glistened on his skin.

My heart fluttered with panic.

– Ralph, I love you. Didn’t you understand anything?

He shook his head miserably:

– Laura, I’m sorry, but…

– Is it because of what I told you? I raised my voice, wanting to make him listen to me. – What will I tell everyone about your adventures? Your act is disgusting to me. That’s all. This does not apply to others.

He wrenched himself out of my hands. There was a feeling that he wants to run upstairs. Unable to control myself, I pushed him, and he hit his back against the wooden panel under the stairs. The sudden change in his mood, when I had just begun to hope, terrified me greatly.

He grabbed my wrists:

– Shh! Speak quietly!

Ah, yes, Anna. Afraid to disturb her little princess. Anna … Sleeps in pink frills in her perfect bedroom upstairs.

– You missed me, Ralph! I know I miss you. Do not lie! I screamed, losing control of myself. “That’s why you’ve been fasting, isn’t it?” I’m talking about your affair.

Removing his hand from my wrist, he tried to clamp it over my mouth. I twisted and, grabbing his hair, kicked him.It was cruel, but something exploded in me when I felt that he was using what was stronger. Just think, the very hand that only recently caressed me pressed threateningly to my lips!

Even fighting him made my heart beat faster. Our naked bodies, slippery with sweat, wriggling, dullly hit the walls, hands and feet touched everything that came in our way. We were like halves of one whole. I felt it as vividly as if we were making love.As if we never parted.

Seizing the moment, he tried to push me away, but I dodged and kicked him in the ankle with a force I never knew I had.

Everything happened instantly. A second ago, we were fighting in a semi-dark hall, then I pushed him hard. Losing his balance, he leaned with all his weight on the door leading to the basement. The door gave way under his weight, and he fell into darkness. I managed to see his frightened eyes, hands, gasping for air in an attempt to restore balance.He slipped on a pile of rubbish – buckets, brooms, boxes that cluttered the top steps of the stairs – and flew down. From the darkness came only eerie thuds, which were getting quieter. I screamed as I imagined his body sliding helplessly down the concrete steps. Then there was a terrifying silence.

I didn’t move for a second. I could not. I couldn’t even breathe.

Suddenly a noise was heard from behind. I turned around. Helen stood at the wide-open front door.Her astonished gaze froze on me: she could not believe her eyes when she saw me in her husband’s shirt, frightened and frozen in the half-dark hall.
