Dermatologist Amy Kassouf, MD shares what you can do — at home and with help from your healthcare provider — to check your under-eye baggage.

What causes eye bags?

Many factors may cause you to get puffy under the eyes:

  • Lack of sleep can trigger both puffiness and dark under-eye circles.
  • Dehydration can cause the skin around your eyes to look saggy and sunken.
  • Fluid retention — such as from allergies or a salty meal — can produce puffiness.
  • Irritation from cosmetics can cause the tissue around your eyes to swell (especially if you don’t wash your face before bed).
  • Aging causes the fat pads in the face to shrink and sink, causing bags to form.
  • Heredity makes some people just more prone to under-eye bags. Sigh.

What can I do to shrink eye bags at home?

Under-eye bags are rarely a cause for concern, but they can be annoying from a cosmetic point of view. If your bags are bugging you, Dr. Kassouf suggests these at-home strategies to look your best.

Prop up your pillow

Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can help prevent fluid from building up around your eyes while you sleep.

Try a cool compress

Cucumbers on your eyes may be a spa-day cliché, but they work, Dr. Kassouf says. A cool compress such as cucumbers or cold tea bags can help reduce puffiness. “Green tea bags are particularly nice because green tea contains antioxidants that can help firm the skin around the eyes,” she says.

Add more moisture

Use a good daily moisturizer to keep skin healthy (just choose a gentle formula for use around your eyes). “Well-moisturized skin has a better moisture barrier, which prevents irritants and allergens from getting into the skin,” Dr. Kassouf says.

Hydrate and avoid alcohol

Dehydration can make the skin around your peepers saggy and sad. Make sure to drink plenty of water. And avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can be dehydrating.

Skip yo-yo dieting

When your weight goes up and down, the fat in your face can grow and shrink — and shift. “Frequent yo-yo dieting can cause the fat pads on your face to become redistributed,” Dr. Kassouf says. To help keep them in place, skip the fad diets and try to maintain a stable weight.

Eye cream for under-eye bags

Alas, there’s no magic potion to shrink bags around the eyes, says Dr. Kassouf. But eye creams might provide some benefit.

Some “instant fix” gels and creams are available but with those, the gel itself shrinks as it dries. Those, though, are only temporary fixes and, Dr. Kassouf says, “They’re helpful but only as long as it doesn’t peel or wear off at the wrong time.”

To pamper the skin around the eyes, consider these skin-soothing ingredients:

  • Retinol.
  • Caffeine.
  • Vitamin C.
  • Antioxidants such as CoQ10.

But a word of caution: “Ingredients such as retinol or antioxidants can be helpful — but if the concentration is too strong, it can break down the moisture barrier and irritate the skin,” Dr. Kassouf says. 

To avoid coming on too strong, look for gentle formulas and ease in: When trying something new, wait a day or two to see how your skin responds. Slowly work up to using it daily.

Medical treatments for eye bags

If at-home tools aren’t doing the trick, these in-office procedures can help treat under-eye bags, Dr. Kassouf says.

  • Laser resurfacing can tighten skin and improve its texture.
  • Botulinum toxin (Botox®) injections can relax some muscles around the eyes, Dr. Kassouf says ­— “so they don’t pull quite so hard and make those drapey lines and bulges.” Botox can also lift the brow, which can help people who have a bulgy or droopy upper eyelid.
  • Fillers can plump up hollows beneath the eyes. “Fillers can help lift the cheek and make a smooth, continuous curve from the lower eyelid to the upper cheek, instead of a hollow spot,” she says.
Is eye bag surgery a thing?

For a longer-lasting fix, plastic surgery is also an option. In a blepharoplasty procedure, plastic surgeons redistribute fat around the eyes and remove extra skin to banish bags for good.

The right solution for eye bags depends on your budget, your anatomy and how much the bags are bugging you. A dermatologist can help you zero in on the best approach. “We can assess what your goals are and how much you want to invest in the process,” Dr. Kassouf says.

Whatever you choose, it’s nice to know there are ways to shed your excess baggage. 

Bags under eyes – Symptoms and causes

Overview

Bags under eyes — mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes — are common as you age. With aging, the tissues around your eyes, including some of the muscles supporting your eyelids, weaken. Normal fat that helps support the eyes can then move into the lower eyelids, causing the lids to appear puffy. Fluid also may accumulate in the space below your eyes, adding to the swelling.

Bags under eyes are usually a cosmetic concern and rarely a sign of a serious underlying medical condition. At-home remedies, such as cool compresses, can help improve the appearance of bags under eyes. For persistent or bothersome under-eye puffiness, eyelid surgery may be an option.

When to see a doctor

You may not like the way they look, but bags under eyes are usually harmless and don’t require medical care. See your doctor if the swelling is severe, persistent, painful, itchy or red.

Your doctor will want to rule out other possible causes that can contribute to the swelling, such as thyroid disease, infection or an allergy. He or she may refer you to a doctor who specializes in the eyes (ophthalmologist), plastic surgery or plastic surgery of the eyes (oculoplastic surgeon).

Causes

As you age, the tissue structures and muscles supporting your eyelids weaken. The skin may start to sag, and fat that is normally confined to the area around the eye (orbit) can move into the area below your eyes. Also, the space below your eyes can accumulate fluid, making the under-eye area appear puffy or swollen. Several factors cause or worsen this effect, including:

  • Fluid retention, especially upon waking or after a salty meal
  • Lack of sleep
  • Allergies
  • Smoking
  • Heredity — under-eye bags can run in families

There’s More To Dark Circles And Eye Bags Than A Lack Of Sleep

Whether you’ve clocked eight hours last night or you’re feeling a little sleep deprived, there’s no escaping a dark circle or two.

Dark circles and eye bags are skin conditions that can leave us looking (or feeling) slightly subpar. And whilst some of us have surrendered to nature’s fair course, dealing with them can be a perpetual struggle that only matures with time.

What causes them?

First things first, we are talking about two different conditions.

“Dark circles are a condition associated with darkness that you see under the eye,” dermatologist Dr Elizabeth Dawes-Higgs told The Huffington Post Australia.

“They can appear due to the thinning of the skin around our eyes, to the point where you begin to see through to the dark muscles,” Dr Dawes-Higgs said.

“As you get older, the bone structure can change and the skin can begin to move, becoming thinner.”

Eye bags are completely different and are caused by a bulging of the fat pads that cushion our eyes.

“Everyone has little fat pockets that are there to protect the bone and the structures of the face,” Dr Dawes-Higgs said.

“With age, these can become weaker and fall forward — or they can sometimes pop out of the skin.”

Eye bags can become weaker or can pop out with age.

When it comes to the old-age tale that sleep — or lack thereof — plays a part, this is not entirely the case.

“People do notice that when they have less sleep, they feel that the dark circles become darker. This may be due to temporary fluid changes that occur when you are lying flat,” Dr Dawes-Higgs said.

“If you are sleep deprived, however, the skin tissue in the under-eye area can become drier, and it may be the case that you can see through the skin more easily.”

According to Dr Dawes-Higgs, genetics is a major factor.

“Under eye circles can be attributed to darker skin pigmentation. Similarly, eye bags can also be genetic, with some families having more prominent bags.”

But the extent to which we are affected by circles and bags can also come down to our lifestyle choices.

“Sun and smoking are the main factors that can worse their appearance,” Dr Dawes-Higgs said.

So, what can we do about it?

With all considerations of age, lifestyle and genetics on the table, there are options out there.

To treat or camouflage dark circles, Dr Dawes-Higgs recommends using an everyday moisturiser and applying sunscreen regularly. When it comes to the host of creams and products that are marketed to soften dark circles: “at the end of the day, they don’t do a lot”.

Managing eye bags requires different treatment options that can include cosmetic surgery.

“Once you have lost that connective cage that keeps the pillow in place, the only way to sort that is to have surgery,” Dr Dawes-Higgs said.

“If it has come out to a smaller degree, you can have have soft tissue fillers inserted around the bag to make it appear more uniform.”

And if genetics are the main driver, camouflage makeup is key.

For Nikki Loyson, Skin Specialist from Mecca Cosmetica, the all important cover-up begins with a dark circle ‘radiance concentrate’ that features a brightening formula.

“This will prep the eye area and you can also apply it to the eye lid. Continued use will help you to look more youthful, whilst the soy peptides (contained in it) work to increase blood flow and decrease swelling as well as any puffiness,” Loyson said.

    Sleep on your back

    First thing’s first: make sure you clock in enough shuteye each night. Aim for at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.

    The position you sleep in can make a difference, too. Be sure to snooze with your head elevated above your heart to prevent puffiness, as this prevents fluids from settling in your face and keeps blood moving freely through your entire body as you sleep.     Drink enough fluids

    Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout your day, advises Dr. Heskett. When you’re dehydrated your body holds onto fluids, which can cause puffiness. Sipping h3O can also help flush excess salt from your system (which your heart will thank you for, too.) The Institute of Medicine recommends women glug 91 ounces (or 2.7 liters) of fluid through liquids and food every day. That includes water-rich produce, like tomatoes, watermelon, and cucumbers.
