Foods to help with erectile dysfunction: Foods to Help Erectile Dysfunction

10 foods that help ED

A healthy diet can impact your sexual health. Experts suggest eating certain things, while avoiding others.

Erectile dysfunction (ED), when a man has difficulty attaining or maintaining an erection, can feel embarrassing to talk about. But, it’s very common. Over 30 million in the United States have experienced this sexual problem. Though it’s mainly apparent in the nether regions, research shows that the causes of ED can be emotional or physically systemic. Common sources of sexual dysfunction include:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Deficit in nerve signaling
  • Vascular disease (most common), such as high blood pressure, that reduces blood flow
  • Medications
  • Endocrine or hormone issues
  • Alcohol use
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease

It is important to discuss ED with your doctor to rule out physical factors that can be checked through bloodwork. Your healthcare provider may test your blood sugar, cholesterol, and even kidney function. Even though it can occur at any age, men are more likely to have ED in middle-age or later.

Does diet affect erectile dysfunction?

The Massachusetts Male Aging Study found an association between dietary cholesterol and unsaturated fat intake and the incidence of ED. Other studies have also shown that eating a Mediterranean diet—mostly vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats (like olive oil)—may prevent ED.

10 foods that help ED

While further research is needed, preliminary evidence shows that eating these foods could be beneficial for men’s health. In addition to decreasing ED, they have other health benefits, making it a win-win to add them to your diet.

1. Blackberries

A study showed that regularly eating flavonoid-rich foods reduced incidence of ED. Blackberries have six different types of flavonoids. If berries aren’t your thing, dark chocolate is another great source of flavonoids.

2. Watermelon

Research in animals shows that L-citrulline, which is found in watermelon, might stimulate blood flow to help with ED. In other words, this summertime fruit could have an effect similar to Viagra, increasing circulation to the penis, although further research is needed to evaluate this possibility. It also contains lycopene, which is beneficial for heart health, which is noteworthy if ED is being caused by an underlying condition.

3. Spinach

Spinach has high levels of folate (folic acid). Folate is a natural form of vitamin B9. A study found that men who experienced ED often had low levels of folic acid. Further investigation is needed to determine if increasing your intake of folic acid could help you to prevent or reverse the effects of ED.

4. Oatmeal

Oatmeal contains the nonessential amino acid L-arginine, which can relax the smooth muscle lining of blood vessels and increase blood flow. A systemic review and meta analysis has shown that L-arginine supplementation could be effective for ED.

5. Pistachios

Research examined if eating pistachios would help men who had ED. After three weeks of eating pistachios, the study participants in this small, uncontrolled experiment had a significant improvement in erectile function. Pistachios are a source of antioxidants that might help improve blood flow.

6. Pomegranate juice

Although it was not significantly significant, a study of 53 men at California State University found that 25 of the 42 participants who had improvements with ED during the study achieved this when drinking pomegranate juice for four weeks. Antioxidants found in pomegranate juice, enhance the nitric oxide levels which can improve ED. It’s not proven, but if you enjoy sipping on this tart beverage, it may be worth a try.

7. Avocado

The Aztecs named avocados ahuacatl, a Nahuatl word meaning testicle because these green fruits were symbols of love and fertility. In the modern day, it’s known that avocados have high levels of zinc, which may increase testosterone levels.

8. Bananas

Bananas are high in potassium. Bananas also contain lots of flavonoids. Research found that men who eat at least three flavonoid-rich foods per week, on average, were 10% less likely to experience ED.

9. Fish

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in most types of fish, can help to increase blood flow. Possibly related to this effect, a study found that in an animal model omega-3 fatty acids helped improve ED. Some types of fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids include albacore tuna, salmon, herring, mussels, anchovies, swordfish, sardines, mackerel, and trout.

10. Chilli peppers

Research looking at men in Uganda who use capsicum frutescens (chili pepper) to treat ED and found that the spice can be helpful. You know that feeling of your sinuses opening up after you eat something hot and spicy? Chili peppers could increase blood flow by affecting your blood vessels, an effect seen in an animal study.

3 ingredients to avoid for an ED diet

Just like certain foods can help your sexual performance, others may hinder it. If you’ve experienced ED in the past, it’s likely your healthcare provider will recommend cutting back on these three things.

1. Alcohol and sugary drinks

While having a couple drinks to get in the mood might feel like an aphrodisiac, it can have the opposite effect. Drinking alcohol can decrease blood flow, reduce testosterone production, and depress the central nervous system. All of these factors can cause ED.

“Stay away from alcohol,” says Kendrick Heywood, MD, internal medicine physician at HealthGAINS. “It does more harm than good. Sugary foods and sports drinks are also terrible. Stay away from those.”

2. Soy-based products

One case report examined a man who consumed large quantities of soy-based products and found a sudden onset of ED. Another study determined that healthy men who used soy protein powder for four weeks had decreased testosterone levels. Soybeans can reduce the production of androgens and the levels of testosterone which can cause ED.

3. Licorice

Licorice candy can lower testosterone levels, according to one study. Low levels of this male hormone could lead to decreased sex drive and increased risk of ED.

Other ways to treat ED

If trying an ED diet alone doesn’t do the trick, you don’t have to settle for a subpar sex life. There are other options to resolve ED—in combination with nutritional modifications or on their own.

The type of treatment you receive will depend on what is causing the ED. If it is an emotional issue then individual or couples counseling may be helpful.

Regular exercise

Research has found that physical activity can improve ED in men with vascular ED. It helps to lower cholesterol levels and improve heart health. It can also help to strengthen the pelvic floor—especially with targeted Kegel exercises.

Another benefit is stress reduction. Getting your heart pumping, or finding your zen with yoga, can help reduce stress-related ED.

Lifestyle changes

A study examined how risk factors, such as smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity influence ED. The findings suggest that making changes in these areas—stopping smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, decreasing alcohol use, and increasing physical activity—might improve ED.

Even though there isn’t any concrete data that vitamins can improve ED, there has been some research that suggests vitamin D, vitamin B9 (folic acid), vitamin B3 (niacin), and vitamin C may help.

“As far as supplements go, I recommend two: nitric oxide boosters and L-arginine,” says Dr. Heywood. Both boost blood flow, which is what matters when it comes to your manhood.”

Just be sure to consult with your healthcare provider for medical advice before you take any dietary supplements, especially if you are taking medications, since there could be an adverse reaction.

If there is a physical cause of the ED, medications can help to relax muscles and increase blood flow. Some common medications are:

Medication interactions

These medications can interact with certain food and other medications. For example, grapefruit juice can delay absorption of Viagra and increase the levels in your body. Or, “eating too much food before you take an enhancement pill can lead to reduced absorption and weaker results,” says Christopher Davis, MD, cardiologist at HealthGAINS. “For best results, meds should be taken an hour or two after or before eating a meal. This gives your body more time to process the food and then absorb what’s needed from the meds.”

You should discuss taking ED meds with your healthcare provider if you take blood pressure medication.

You should also not take two different ED medications at the same time. If you combine these medications or if you take Viagra with blood pressure medication you might experience side effects like dizziness—or in severe cases—a heart attack.

What symptoms require a doctor’s visit?

When it comes to ED, two things require a visit to your healthcare provider, according to Dr. Heywood.

  1. If intimacy is painful for you or your partner, it’s time to make an appointment. This could be a sign of an underlying condition, such as Peyronie’s Disease.
  2. If ED is consistent, call your healthcare provider. One bout of ED could be an off day. But if it keeps on happening, it’s time to see a physician—and maybe even a cardiologist. ED is an early warning sign of future heart complications. It may also be a warning that testosterone levels are declining, which can be optimized with treatment.

ED is a red flag in men that can save lives. “One of the first stages of heart disease is endothelial dysfunction,” Dr. Davis explains. “Because this dysfunction usually affects the blood vessels in the penis first, ED becomes an early indicator.”

Yes, it can feel uncomfortable to talk about, but having the right tests can prevent a major health issue—along with restoring your confidence in the bedroom.

14 Foods That May Help ED

However, making changes to your habits, lifestyle and diet can also help to improve your sexual performance and make it easier to get and keep an erection.

Below, we’ve listed foods that may help to treat erectile dysfunction by improving cardiovascular health, increasing blood flow and boosting your body’s production of sex-related hormones such as testosterone.

We’ve also explained how making other lifestyle changes can improve your erectile health and make dealing with ED an easier process.

Can Food Treat Erectile Dysfunction?

Before we get into the specifics of using food to treat ED, it’s important to put the advice below in context.

ED can vary hugely in severity. For example, some men with ED can sometimes get hard with few or no issues, but occasionally struggle with erectile dysfunction. Others have persistent or ED that prevents them from getting an erection at any time.

If you have mild to moderate ED, making changes to your diet and lifestyle may make it easier for you to get an erection. If you couple dietary changes with improvements to your health, you may notice a lasting positive effect on your sexual performance.

However, if you have severe or persistent ED, changing your diet isn’t likely to be as effective as proven, science-based medication.

As such, it’s important to put the dietary side of treating ED into context. Changing your diet can and likely will help you to improve your erectile health. However, if your ED is severe, it’s best to think of it as one aspect of the treatment and improvement process.

We’ve talked more about the other steps in the process, including medications for ED, in our full guide to erectile dysfunction symptoms, causes and treatments.

How Erections Work

Getting an erection seems simple. After all, when you’re sexually aroused and stimulated, it’s just something that happens naturally.

However, behind the scenes, a complicated, multi-stage process involving your brain, vascular system and penis is involved in producing and maintaining every erection you get.

Erections start with stimulation. This may involve physical contact with someone else or visual sexual stimuli in the form of porn.

In response to sexual stimulation, impulses from your brain and nerves cause blood to flow into the soft erectile tissue of your penis, called the corpora cavernosa. As blood flows in, pressure builds, causing your penis to increase in size and become firmer.

At the same time, the tunica albuginea — a fibrous membrane that surrounds the erectile tissue of your penis — contracts, trapping blood inside your penis and allowing you to stay hard during sex.

Since blood flow plays such a major role in the process of getting and maintaining an erection, preventing ED is all about maintaining good cardiovascular health. It’s also about avoiding any health issues that may increase your risk of developing ED.

These include being overweight or obese, smoking, not staying physically active, drinking too much alcohol, using certain types of medication or having a health condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure or atherosclerosis (clogged arteries).

Foods That May Help Erectile Dysfunction

Numerous foods may help to improve erectile health and help with erectile dysfunction, either by improving blood flow or increasing testosterone production.

We’ve listed these foods below, along with more information on how each can help and how you can incorporate it into your diet.

Spinach, Lettuce & Other Nitrate-Rich Vegetables

Spinach, lettuce and several other vegetables are rich in nitrates — natural chemical compounds that have a vasodilating effect.

Nitrates affect a process called the nitrate‐nitrite‐nitric oxide pathway, in which nitrates in some types of food are recycled in blood and tissue to produce nitric oxide, an important molecule for your vascular health and blood flow.

By promoting blood flow, the nitrates in spinach and other vegetables may increase blood flow to the penis and treat the physical side of erectile dysfunction.

Most vegetables contain nitrates. Research shows that green, leafy vegetables such as parsley, spinach and beet leaves tend to have the highest concentration of nitrates, with root vegetables and fruit vegetables containing lower amounts.

Oysters & Other Shellfish

Oysters and other shellfish are rich in zinc — an essential mineral that’s linked to higher levels of testosterone.

As the primary male sex hormone, testosterone plays a key role in your sexual functioning as a man. When your testosterone levels are low, you may feel less interested in sex and experience issues like erectile dysfunction.

Research shows that zinc supplementation is associated with an increase in testosterone levels in men.

Zinc can be found in a wide variety of foods. Overall, oysters contain by far the highest levels of zinc of any common food. In fact, a single serving of oysters contains 673 percent of the daily reference intake for zinc.

Other foods that contain zinc include crab, lobster, beef, pork, beans, chicken, fortified breakfast cereals, chickpeas and pumpkin seeds. Zinc is also commonly available as a supplement.

Proteins Containing L-Arginine

L-arginine is an amino acid that’s found in meat and other sources of protein. It’s used to create nitric oxide, an essential component of the smooth muscle relaxation that allows you to get and maintain an erection when you’re sexually aroused.

You can find l-arginine in most protein-rich foods, including many types of red meat, poultry and seafood. It’s also found in dairy and nuts. L-arginine is also widely available as a supplement for athletic performance and general wellbeing.

Research, including a study published in Andrology, has noted that men with ED often have low levels of l-arginine.

Another study from 2003 found that a combination of l-arginine and pycnogenol (a type of bark from the Pinus pinaster tree) helped men affected by ED to regain normal sexual performance over the course of several months.

Cocoa, Dark Chocolate & Other Flavonoid-Rich Foods

While most of us view chocolate as a treat rather than a medicinal food, dark types of chocolate may offer benefits if you have ED.

Research has found that a higher intake of foods that are rich in flavonoids (naturally-occurring plant chemicals with antioxidant effects) is associated with a reduced risk of developing erectile dysfunction.

Flavonoids are found in numerous common foods, including nuts and tea leaves. However, one of the food types with the highest flavonoid content is cocoa. Because of this, foods based on cocoa such as dark chocolate are rich, delicious sources of flavonoids.

In addition to chocolate, other flavonoid-rich foods include nuts, grains and many common fruits and vegetables. You can also find flavonoids in red wine and many types of tea.

While eating chocolate in excess obviously isn’t a good idea for your general health, eating one or two small pieces of dark chocolate each day is unlikely to hurt, all while potentially helping to maintain healthy blood flow and erections.

Tomatoes, Watermelon & Other Lycopene-Rich Fruits

Tomatoes, watermelon, guavas, papaya and other fruits are all great sources of lycopene — an important plant-based nutrient that has antioxidant properties.

Lycopene is associated with several health benefits, including improved vascular function and prevention of certain cardiovascular health issues.

While very little research is available on the potential effects of lycopene on sexual performance in humans, some animal research has found that lycopene may play a role in improving erectile health.

For example, one study published in 2012 found that lycopene restored erectile function in male rats with ED.

Another animal study found that lycopene may have certain benefits for cardiovascular health — an important component of erectile function.

While these studies are interesting, it’s important to remember that findings from animal studies don’t always translate into the same effects in humans.

Many fruits and vegetables are also rich in other nutrients and compounds that may help to treat ED. For example, watermelon contains the amino acid L-citrulline, which is linked to a variety of vascular health benefits.

In a scientific review published in 2017, researchers found that L-citrulline supplementation can increase nitric oxide levels, reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow.

Another study found that a combination of L-citrulline and resveratrol improved erectile function in men who used PDE5 inhibitors (medications like sildenafil or tadalafil) to treat ED.

Avocados are rich in dietary fiber and healthy fats that can contribute to better cardiovascular health and blood flow.

Research has found that avocados may help to lower levels of low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, a form of cholesterol that can clog arteries and affect blood flow.

Avocados are also rich in zinc, an essential mineral that’s associated with an increased level of testosterone production in research.

Finally, avocados contain small amounts of vitamin E and selenium, both of which are linked to improvements in sperm motility, semen quality and male fertility.

While there’s no direct scientific research on avocados and erectile dysfunction, these effects could make avocados a good addition to your diet for improved fertility and sexual health.

As we’ve discussed in our full guide to caffeine and ED, there may be a link between coffee and erectile health, although research on this topic is mixed overall.

A study published in PLoS One in 2015 analyzed the relationship between coffee drinking and erectile dysfunction. As part of the study, 3,724 men aged 20 and above were surveyed about their eating and drinking habits, as well as their erectile health.

The study found that men who consumed the least caffeine were more likely to report ED than men who consumed the equivalent of one to two cups of coffee per day.

A different study published in 2018, on the other hand, found no difference in ED risk between men who consumed the highest amount of coffee (four or more cups per day) and the lowest amount (zero cups per day).

In short, the jury is still out on whether or not coffee improves ED. While some research shows that it may have some impact on erectile health and sexual performance, other studies haven’t found a significant correlation.

The Mediterranean Diet

Although it’s not a food per se, research shows that the foods that make up the Mediterranean diet are generally a good option for improving cardiovascular wellbeing, blood flow and erectile health.

There’s even some research showing that following the Mediterranean diet may lower your risk of developing ED.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. It uses olive oil as its source of fat and includes protein sources such as fish, poultry, dairy products and eggs in low to moderate amounts.

It also emphasizes limiting simple sugars, salt, refined carbohydrates, saturated fats and heavily processed or fatty meats.

Since the Mediterranean diet is ideal for reducing your risk of cardiovascular health issues, it may be a  good choice for optimizing your sexual performance and erectile health.

A review of four clinical trials published in 2017 found that adherence to a Mediterranean diet is linked to a reduced risk of developing ED.

The researchers noted that the Mediterranean diet’s positive effects on antioxidants, lipids and glucose metabolism, as well as its effects on arginine levels may increase levels of nitric oxide in the body to protect against ED.

Other Ways to Improve Sexual Performance

Since erectile health is so closely linked to your general health, maintaining good habits and a healthy lifestyle can often help to improve your sexual performance. Try the following habits to improve your sexual performance and reduce your risk of ED:

  • Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity and ED are closely linked with each other — in fact, research shows that having a body mass index (BMI) in the obese range triples your risk of erectile dysfunction.

To reduce your risk of dealing with erectile dysfunction, try to maintain a healthy body weight. Although BMI is far from ideal, aiming for a BMI in the normal range is a good way to limit your risk of developing erectile health issues.

  • Exercise regularly. Research shows that aerobic exercise is linked to improvements in sexual performance. For example, a review of five studies found that men with ED who engage in regular exercise experience significant improvements in erectile health.

Exercising regularly, along with eating a healthy diet, also plays a major role in helping you to maintain a healthy body weight.

  • If you smoke, try to quit. Research shows that smoking is a major risk factor for ED, with the amount of tobacco you smoke closely correlated with your risk of developing erectile dysfunction.

If you smoke, make an effort to quit. Our guide to quitting goes into more detail on your options for quitting tobacco, dealing with nicotine cravings and staying smoke-free over the long term.

  • Limit your alcohol consumption. Research shows that chronic and persistent alcohol consumption is closely associated with sexual dysfunction, including ED.

While it’s okay to drink every now and then, drinking large amounts of alcohol regularly isn’t good for your erectile health. Try to follow the CDC’s recommendation of no more than two drinks per day for men (or one per day for women).

Making other changes to your lifestyle, such as reducing stress and treating underlying medical issues such as high blood pressure, can also have a positive impact on your sexual health and performance.

We’ve talked more about good habits and lifestyle changes for improving your erectile health in our guide to natural ways to protect your erection.

Science-Based Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction

Although making changes to your diet and lifestyle can improve your sexual performance and make ED less severe, the most effective way to treat erectile dysfunction is through the use of science-based, FDA-approved medication. Options include:

  • Sildenafil. The active ingredient in Viagra, sildenafil(generic Viagra) provides relief from ED for around four hours.

  • Tadalafil. The active ingredient in Cialis®, tadalafil is a long-lasting medication that can provide relief from ED for up to 36 hours.

  • Vardenafil. The active ingredient in Levitra®, vardenafil can provide relief from ED for slightly longer than sildenafil.

  • Avanafil. Sold at Stendra®, avanafil is a new ED medication that’s fast-acting and less likely to cause certain side effects than older medications.

We offer many of these medications online, following a consultation with a healthcare professional who will determine if a prescription is appropriate.

You can learn more about how these ED medications work, their effects, side effects and more in our guide to the most common erectile dysfunction treatments.

In Conclusion

If you have erectile dysfunction, adding certain foods to your diet can help to improve your heart health, promote optimal blood flow and make it easier to get an erection.

Over the long term, improving your diet and habits can also have a huge positive impact on your life as a whole, especially if you’re currently experiencing ED due to obesity, too little exercise or another physical health issue.

With this said, it’s important to put the effects of an erection-friendly diet in context. While eating more spinach or avocados is generally a good thing for your erectile health, improving your diet, for the most part, won’t cause your ED to immediately disappear.

If you have moderate or severe ED, it’s best to talk to a licensed healthcare provider. They’ll be able to work with you and provide information about ED medications and other techniques that you can use to treat erectile dysfunction and improve your sexual performance.

25 Foods That Help You Stay Erect

If you’re struggling with erectile dysfunction, or not being able to get and stay hard during sex, your diet could have something to do with it. It turns out a crappy diet can do more than wreck your waistline—it can sink your erection, too.

Think about it: Some of the smallest blood vessels and nerves in your body can be found in your penis, says Jamin Brahmbhatt, M.D., a urologist at Orlando Health. So if you’re slamming down junk like pizza and fries every day, your blood vessels down under may get clogged with fat and cholesterol.

This restricts blood flow to your penis, preventing you from getting hard when you’re ready for action and even putting your heart health at risk down the road. Many of these foods can increase your chances of developing high blood pressure, too.

It may sound wacky, but you should treat your penis like a luxury car, says Dr. Brahmbhatt. To keep your ride running smoothly, you need to fill it with the recommended fuel and keep up with the suggested maintenance. Well, your penis needs the same—like healthy foods and plenty of exercise—to keep it going strong, he says.

Filling up with the right foods can boost your testosterone, strengthen your sperm, and supercharge your erection. Even better, a good diet will keep your heart healthy. So, what do we recommend as premium fuel? These 25 foods are a good place to start.

Watermelon, Pumpkin, Cucumber

Westend61Getty Images

A 2011 study published in the journal Urology evaluated 24 men who took L-citrulline and placebo and rated the “hardness” of their erections. When the men took the supplement, erections were rated as harder than when they took the placebo. Foods that contain high levels of L-citrulline include watermelon, pumpkin, and cucumbers.

Turkey, Chicken, Peanuts, Soybeans

Kseniya OvchinnikovaGetty Images

A 2019 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine concluded that arginine was useful to treat mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. Foods high in arginine include turkey, chicken, peanuts, and soybeans.

A note on these first two sections: Keep in mind that a few watermelon slices or a handful of soybeans won’t magically transform your erection. “Most of the supplements offered in these studies for erectile dysfunction included high concentrations of L-citrulline and arginine, so it’s unlikely that eating a few cucumbers or an entire watermelon will lead to a rock-hard erection,” notes Michael Ingber, MD, a urologist and urogynecologist at Garden State Urology.

Spinach, Arugula, Celery

Westend61Getty Images

“Nitric Oxide is one of the key ingredients in developing a good erection,” Ingber says. It increases blood flow to the genitals and is essential in maintaining an erection. “Many of our currently available medical therapies focus on this.”

Foods that can increase nitric oxide include spinach, arugula, and celery.

Your morning coffee may improve your sex life, according to a study of more than 3,700 men from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Those who downed the equivalent of 2 to 3 cups of a coffee a day—between 170 to 375 milligrams (mg) of caffeine—were less likely to report erectile dysfunction (ED) issues than men who skipped their cup of Joe.

Why? Caffeine triggers a series of effects in your body that help the arteries in your penis relax and blood flow to increase, producing an effect similar to ED drugs like Viagra, the study authors explain.

Salmon, Egg Yolks, Fortified Milk

Your D needs vitamin D, suggests one Austrian study—and the foods above are great sources of it.

After researchers had men take either 3,332 IU of vitamin D or a placebo per day for a year, they found that free testosterone levels—the powerhouse behind your sex drive—significantly increased in guys loading up with vitamin D.

Plus, insufficient D levels may also increase your risk for erectile dysfunction, Italian researchers found. When you don’t get enough vitamin D, you produce free radicals that decrease nitric oxide in your body, a compound that helps your blood vessels function, the researchers say.

Without it, your blood vessels can’t relax, hindering the flow of blood to your penis. That makes it difficult for you to get hard, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

So how much D do you really need? That’s still up for debate: The National Institutes of Health recommend getting 600 IU daily, while the Endocrine Society notes that some people may need to go much higher with 1,500 to 2,000 IU a day. Talk to your doctor to find out what works best for you.

Pistachios, Almonds, Walnuts

MirageCGetty Images

Need a snack? Choose nuts, researchers from Turkey suggest. After 17 men with ED ate 100 grams of pistachios for three weeks, they all reported a significant improvement in their erectile function, ability to orgasm, libido, sexual satisfaction, and overall happiness in life. As a bonus, they all had higher HDL, or “good,” cholesterol and lower LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol, too.

Pistachios contain a high amount of an amino acid that boosts nitric oxide in your body, the researchers say. And like almonds, walnuts, and most other nuts, they’re a great source of healthy fats, which are good for your heart and therefore your penis, says Dr. Brahmbhatt.

Blueberries, Oranges

Westend61Getty Images

Only 13 percent of Americans eat enough fruit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Big mistake: Eating enough of the right ones can work wonders to improve your sexual health.

In a 10-year study of more than 25,000 men, Harvard University researchers found that men who ate foods packed with certain flavonoids—anthocyanins, flavanones, and flavones—had a lower ED risk than guys who didn’t eat as much of them. The effect was particularly strong among those under 70 years old.

In fact, men who ate flavonoid-rich foods—like blueberries, strawberries, apples, and citrus fruits—a few times a week reduced their ED risk by 9 to 11 percent compared to those who ate them less frequently. The researchers speculate that flavonoids found in these foods may help improve the health of your blood vessels by relaxing your arteries.

Bonus points if you like to break a sweat: Men who were physically active (consider that 2 to 5 hours of brisk walking a week) and ate flavonoid-rich fruits reduced their ED risk by 21 percent.

So make sure you‘re fitting enough in your diet: The U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend consuming two cups of fruit every day. (This handy chart can help you figure out portion sizes.)

Legumes, Whole Grains, Olive Oil

fcafotodigitalGetty Images

Since the Mediterranean diet is good for your heart, it’s not exactly surprising that it may benefit your penis, too. Heart disease is actually one of the most common causes of ED. Once plaque starts to build up in your blood vessels, the ones in your penis are the first to get blocked up.

So to truly test the diet’s benefits, Italian researchers had 35 men with diagnosed with ED and metabolic syndrome—a group of factors linked to heart health problems—load up their plates with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and fish. Another 30 men with metabolic syndrome followed a control diet.

After two years, about one third of the men following the Mediterranean diet regained normal sexual functioning and saw lower levels of inflammation in their bodies.

Researchers aren’t exactly sure why the diet could help men with ED, but they believe the combination of eating more fiber-filled and antioxidant-rich foods may have anti-inflammatory properties, which helps promote healthy blood flow, the study authors say.

And you don’t have to be dealing with heart problems to notice the diet’s benefits in the bedroom. Men who eat lots of monounsaturated fats (a Mediterranean diet staple), like fish and nuts, also have the highest levels of testosterone, research suggests.

Other studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet can help you drop a few pounds, and a healthy body weight is linked to stronger erections. That’s because extra weight can harm your vascular function, which interrupts blood flow to your penis. A study of more than 7,000 adults published in The Lancet found the Mediterranean diet can help people lose weight without counting calories. It’s particularly great at reducing belly fat, which raises your risk of heart disease.

Peppers, Peaches

Kristin LeeGetty Images

Vitamin C is key for healthy sperm, according to research from the University of Texas Medical Branch.

In the study, researchers divided 75 men—all heavy smokers with poor semen quality— into three groups. One group took 200 mg of vitamin C, another took 1,000 mg, and the last group took a placebo.

After four weeks, the 200-mg group improved their sperm quality by 15 percent, meaning they not only had a higher sperm count, but their sperm were able to swim more efficiently and survive longer, too.

What’s more, the 1000-mg group more than doubled that by 40 percent. Vitamin C seems to protect your sperm’s DNA from cell-damaging free radicals, the researchers say. That’s important, since damaged sperm might mess with your ability to conceive when you’re ready to have a kid.

Aim for a minimum of 90 mg and no more than 2,000 mg of vitamin C a day, suggests the National Institutes of Health. While the participants in the study popped a supplement, you can easily get your daily dose through vitamin-C rich foods, which is always your best bet. Of course oranges are the most obvious choice, but yellow peppers, peaches, and spinach are great sources of vitamin C.

5 natural ways to overcome erectile dysfunction

Can you run as fast as you did when you were 20 years old? Hit a baseball as far as you once could? Bash a tennis ball with the same speed and spin?

Probably not.

But even as we age, there are still plenty of ways to stay in the game and enjoy it. That’s as true of sex as it is of sports.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) can occur for many reasons. Sometimes it is as simple as the side effect of a particular medication. But for roughly 75% of men, the cause is more complex. ED may result from vascular disease, neurological disease, diabetes, or prostate-related treatments or surgeries.

Whether you currently suffer from ED or are hoping to sidestep this condition, try these tips to overcome ED for better health and a better sex life.

  1. Start walking. According to one Harvard study, just 30 minutes of walking a day was linked with a 41% drop in risk for ED. Other research suggests that moderate exercise can help restore sexual performance in obese middle-aged men with ED.
  2. Eat right. In the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, eating a diet rich in natural foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and fish — with fewer red and processed meat and refined grains — decreased the likelihood of ED.
  3. Pay attention to your vascular health. High blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides can all damage arteries in the heart (causing heart attack), in the brain (causing stroke), and leading to the penis (causing ED). An expanding waistline also contributes. Check with your doctor to find out whether your vascular system — and thus your heart, brain, and penis — is in good shape or needs a tune-up through lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medications.
  4. Size matters, so get slim and stay slim. A trim waistline is one good defense — a man with a 42-inch waist is 50% more likely to have ED than one with a 32-inch waist. Losing weight can help fight erectile dysfunction, so getting to a healthy weight and staying there is another good strategy for avoiding or fixing ED. Obesity raises risks for vascular disease and diabetes, two major causes of ED. And excess fat interferes with several hormones that may be part of the problem as well.
  5. Move a muscle, but we’re not talking about your biceps. A strong pelvic floor enhances rigidity during erections and helps keep blood from leaving the penis by pressing on a key vein. In a British trial, three months of twice-daily sets of Kegel exercises (which strengthen these muscles), combined with biofeedback and advice on lifestyle changes — quitting smoking, losing weight, limiting alcohol — worked far better than just advice on lifestyle changes.

Foods to treat Erectile Dysfunction Urology of Virginia

Erectile dysfunction (ED) has many causes, but research has shown that obesity, hypertension (HTN), diabetes, stress, and anxiety have all been linked to ED. Our diets are filled with processed foods that are high in sodium and sugar and lack many vital nutrients. The food we ingest and our lifestyle choices affect ED and our overall health in general, and weight loss, exercise and stress reduction have been shown to improve ED symptoms.

A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that a Mediterranean diet decreased the likelihood of ED. A Mediterranean diet is high in fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts, and whole grains, and low in red and processed meat and refined grains. Similar results were found in the Massachusetts Male Aging Study.

Since one cause of ED is reduced blood flow, choosing foods high in antioxidants and fiber may help combat this issue because they are considered anti-inflammatory. Foods known to be anti-inflammatory include broccoli, Brussel’s sprouts, cauliflower, leafy greens, beets, blueberries, pineapple, salmon, flaxseed, chia seeds, turmeric, and ginger.

Additionally, foods high in flavonoids can decrease ED symptoms and help lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Flavonoids are a type of phytonutrient, which are compounds found in plants. Phytonutrients have been found to have antioxidant properties, which help the body fight inflammation and disease. Fruits high in flavonoids are berries, apples, red and purple grapes, oranges, grapefruits, and lemons. Vegetables include onions, scallions, kale, broccoli, celery, and hot peppers.  Flavonoids can also be found in tea, wine, soybeans, dark chocolate, and nuts.

Many websites state that specific vegetables can help with ED and sex drive, but there is limited research. However, most of these foods are fruits and vegetables, and high in phytonutrients, folate, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E, so there is no harm in adding them to your diet, especially if they replace processed sugary foods. Some of the foods that fall into these categories are watermelon, carrots, avocados, oysters, spinach, apples, and tomatoes.

Besides choosing what to eat, it is equally important to choose what NOT to eat. Foods that promote inflammation should be avoided, such as sugar, processed and packaged foods, refined vegetable oils, refined and processed grains, artificial sweeteners, sugary beverages and too much caffeine and alcohol. These foods cause inflammation and stress and may even cause fatigue or disrupt the hormonal balance.

10 Foods that Help You Stay Erect

Your diet has an effect on your body. This shouldn’t be news to anyone. But did you know that what you eat and drink can affect your erections? What you put in your mouth can make a difference to what happens down there.

There are foods that can help you stay erect. Specifically, foods that have been scientifically proven to boost testosterone, improve blood flow, and to help combat erectile dysfunction (ED).

Start the day the right way, and you could reap the benefits later on. Try including some of these foods for erectile dysfunction in your breakfast:

1. Porridge

It might not sound like the sexiest of meals, but oats are rich in the amino acids your body needs to stay healthy, including L-arginine, which has been shown to reduce ED by improving blood flow to the penis, which is what sildenafil (Viagra) actually does. Oats can also reduce cholesterol levels, helping to prevent arteries becoming narrowed or blocked, which can also help combat ED.

2. Coffee

Research has shown that men who drink the equivalent of two to three cups of coffee a day have a lower chance of having ED. It’s thought that caffeine is the magic ingredient, and that it possibly helps to stave off ED by relaxing the arteries and muscles inside the penis, improving the flow of blood, resulting in stronger erections.

Ditch that mediocre meal deal for some of these:

3. Shellfish, chicken, and tofu

Zinc plays an important role in the production of testosterone. Loads of studies have found links between low levels of zinc and low levels of the hormone, which can lead to reduced desire for sex and ED. Good sources of zinc include shellfish, particularly oysters, chicken, and for vegetarians, tofu.

4. Tuna

Magnesium has been shown to boost testosterone, and it also helps your body process nitric oxide, which helps relax muscle tissue inside the penis and encourage blood to flow into it. Tuna and other oily fish like mackerel and pollock are rich in magnesium and therefore decent foods for erections.

5. Green vegetables

Green vegetables, like asparagus, spinach, edamame beans, and broccoli, are all good sources of folic acid, a type of B vitamin that improves blood flow. Research has linked low levels of folic acid to ED, so make sure you don’t skip your greens.

6. Fruit

Potassium has been shown to assist blood flow as it helps to stop your arteries from becoming blocked.

Many types of fruit are good sources of potassium, including kiwis, cantaloupe melons, guavas and bananas. Yes that’s right, the most phallic of fruit does in fact help with ED. Why not have a portion of fruit for dessert after lunch and avoid the inevitable post-lunch snacking?

Steak, curry, and chocolate. Now we’re talking.

7. Beef

Beef can be a great testosterone booster. It’s high in zinc, but it also contains an amino acid called leucine which has also been shown to improve testosterone levels. Beef can be fatty though, so make sure you choose leaner cuts, like sirloin steak. Remember that red meat has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, so make steak an occasional treat more than a regular part of your diet.

8. Curry

Research has shown that men who eat spicy foods have higher than average levels of testosterone. The key ingredient in the spice is thought to be capsaicin, a molecule found in chili peppers that may boost levels of testosterone. Foods high in capsaicin are those which contain chili, like curries. You can also add capsaicin to your diet by using hot pepper sauces like Tabasco sauce.

9. Dark chocolate

Great news if you’ve got a sweet tooth. Flavonoids, a type of antioxidant found in plants, and in high levels in dark chocolate, have been shown to improve blood flow. Dark chocolate is also high in magnesium, making it a double win.

Steer clear of those artery-clogging, waist-expanding biscuits and crisps, and grab a handful of nuts and seeds instead:

10. Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are packed with nutrients, including erection-friendly magnesium and zinc. Research has also found that regularly eating nuts improved men’s libidos and the quality of their orgasms. Awesome. Nuts and seeds can be high in calories though, so don’t eat the whole bag in one go.

Healthy life, healthy heart, healthy erections

You might have noticed a trend here. Yep, most of the foods we’ve recommended are healthy. But if you want good erections, you need to try and lead a healthy life too.

In addition to the specific benefits we’ve mentioned here, a good diet, that’s rich in fruit and vegetables, fish, and lean meats, can help keep your weight and cholesterol down, as well as ensure your heart is strong, and that blood is pumping around your body. All of these will improve your chances of avoiding erectile dysfunction. In fact, exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting enough sleep can also help too.

These specific foods for erectile dysfunction aren’t a miracle cure though. They can help, but if you regularly experience ED, you should see your doctor too. It can be an early sign that you have a more serious health condition. Products for improving the potency of men of quick action: a list of the best from Playboy

From time to time in the life of every man, one way or another, difficulties arise in intimate life.Potency is also influenced by our psychological state (stress at work, quarrels with family or friends, constant anxiety, depression), and lifestyle (lack of physical activity, alcohol, cigarettes, junk food), and age, and relationship with a partner, and state health, and medications taken, and much more.

At the same time, many prefer to “ignore” recurring problems, and at the same time resort to the help of “miraculous” pills that help in a short time to bring the genital organ into a combat-ready state. However, it is worth remembering that the effect of such drugs is temporary and has a number of side effects. For long-term and comprehensive health maintenance, such pills are definitely not suitable.

What is potency, libido and fertility – in short

Before we proceed to specific recommendations for the use of certain products, let’s figure out what potency, libido and fertility are.

  • Potency is the ability of a man’s body to have sexual intercourse. As we mentioned above, it is influenced by many factors at once – from mental to physical condition.
  • Libido is the desire for sexual intimacy, which also depends on the mental and physical condition of a person.
  • Fertility is the ability of the human body to leave offspring, that is, the ability to conceive. Fertility is also influenced by many factors, predominantly of a physiological nature.

Thus, we have compiled an exhaustive list of products, some of which have a beneficial effect on potency, the other on libido, and the third on fertility. When it comes to men’s health, an integrated approach is required.

Disclaimer: we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the following are products that have a positive effect on sexual health and potency, but this does not mean that they can help you cope with diseases , both physical and mental. We do not recommend self-medication, therefore, in case of regular problems with potency, be sure to consult a doctor.

1 Fish

The classic option for those who care about their health is fish. According to a study published in the scientific journal The Journal of Nutrition, men who prefer fish had good indicators of sperm size and shape. As it turned out, it is on them that male infertility is determined.

In addition, the results of observations showed that men who prefer red fish have 34% more spermatoisodes than those who do not eat fish at all.

2 Celery

Celery is not only a hipster herb that is perfect for making green smoothies. In fact, celery is rich in vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and niacin. Plus, it is a real pheromone due to its two elements – androsterone and adrostenol.

That is why it not only helps to normalize libido, but also helps to literally attract women.

3 Tomatoes

If for some reason you ignore tomatoes, it’s time to rethink your attitude towards them. Here’s an interesting fact for you: Men who eat more than ten tomatoes a week reduce their risk of prostate cancer by 18%.

All this thanks to an antioxidant called lycopene, which is able to fight toxins that negatively affect the DNA and cells of the body. This is evidenced by the data of the scientific journal “Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention”.

4 Coffee

Surprised? Coffee can also have a beneficial effect on male potency. Therefore, you should not refuse it when offered.

According to a study published in the scientific journal Plos One, men who ate 85 to 170 milligrams of caffeine in their daily diet (that is, about two to three cups) were 42% less likely to experience erectile dysfunction.

According to scientists, this is due to the relaxing effect of caffeine on the arteries, thereby improving blood flow to the genitals.

5 Chili Pepper

If you like spicy food, chili pepper will be your ideal ally on the way to healthy sexual intercourse. As it turns out, men who frequently add chili to their diet have high testosterone levels.

This is believed to be due to the alkaloid capsaicin in chili and aromatase, a substance that slows down the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.

However, do not eat hot peppers if you have digestive problems. There are other options to improve your health.

6 Carrots

Another helper of any man is carrots.According to a study published in the scientific journal Fertility and Sterility, carrots are the best at affecting sperm count and motility of all other fruits and vegetables.

Thus, in the course of the experiments, men who began to eat carrots often improved their sperm counts by 6.5-8%. Scientists attribute this to the increased content of carotenoids in the vegetable – compounds involved in the production of vitamin A.

7 Pumpkin seeds

You have probably heard more than once that pumpkin seeds are very useful for the body (and this is really so).

They contain a large amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which directly affect the increase in the level of prostaglandins (substances that increase libido).

If you want to know more about the benefits of pumpkin seeds, you can familiarize yourself with our material, in which we have analyzed in detail all their useful properties.

8 Spinach

Do you remember the sailor Popeye, whose forearms were wider than a bituha? This is all because he was constantly at the helm and consumed tons of spinach. We are sure that he had no problems with potency, despite his addiction to the pipe (his creators simply kept silent about this).

Be that as it may, spinach is good because it contains a lot of magnesium and folic acid, which help to increase potency in the shortest possible time.

MOSCOW, 23 October – RIA Novosti, Tatyana Pichugina. Men who prefer organic food are less likely to complain of erectile dysfunction, according to American scientists. And the Mediterranean diet has a positive effect on female sexuality. What foods contribute to sex drive and a healthy family life – in the material RIA Novosti. Nutrition for men From 30 to 52 percent of men after 40 years of age complain of various disorders that are associated with the inability to have sexual intercourse normally. Most often we are talking about an inferior erection. There are many remedies for treatment, including surgical ones. However, the researchers, led by Professor Faisal Yafi from the Department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine, went from another angle: they looked at how nutrition affects. All men who, from July 2018 to May 2019, went to the clinic with complaints of malfunctions in the genital area, they asked about their diet and lifestyle. Of the 271 people, 65 percent ate “normally”, the rest followed a diet – they ate organic and unprocessed foods, avoided canned and processed foods.Twenty-eight percent practiced intermittent fasting. As it turned out, supporters of a healthy diet are less likely to complain about problems with erection. The authors note that an organic diet improves well-being and provides an influx of energy, which, in turn, increases libido. It can be assumed that in such food there is less chemistry that depressing the nervous system, but more vitamins, antioxidants and nutritional value. There is evidence that intermittent fasting normalizes the glycemic index and metabolism, and increases testosterone levels.Scientists are careful in their conclusions: after all, the analysis covered few participants. It cannot be said with certainty that only diet affects sexual performance. Most likely, people who follow their diet lead a healthier lifestyle in general and are more attentive to their condition. The results of the experiment cannot be generalized to those who follow other diets – keto, whole food, paleo, vegetarian, vegan. This is where separate research is needed. What helps women A year ago, the same team published data on the relationship between female sexuality and nutrition.According to statistics, up to 43 percent of women experience problems with sexual function – however, the number may be higher, because such complaints are rarely addressed to doctors. Just now, the scientific community has wondered how important diet is. Scientists have noticed that metabolic syndrome, excess weight and cardiovascular disease often lead to sexual dysfunction in women. Diet is part of the therapy for these conditions. The usual Western diet is clearly unhealthy, with a lot of fried, bad fats and industrially processed foods.Another thing is the Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fish, whole grains. There is evidence that in women with these diseases, this type of diet improves sex life. The ketogenic diet gives some positive results, especially in its maximum phase – it enhances orgasm. Eat for health The question of which foods have a positive effect on sexual activity. Studies in Iranian, Canadian and Albanian men have shown that if a tenth of the daily diet consists of fruits and vegetables, there is less risk of developing sexual dysfunction.Nuts and high fiber foods are effective. Men of the tropical Amazon tribes rarely suffer from erectile dysfunction and ejaculation – and they eat river fish, Brazil nuts, fruits and vegetables. The replacement of saturated fats with monounsaturated ones – they are found in nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame – has a positive effect. It is also necessary to monitor the low ratio of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats and omega-3: their ideal balance is in the red meat of pasture animals that ate meadow grass.Chinese scientists have found that folate deficiency causes premature ejaculation in men. This means that the diet should include legumes rich in this vitamin, the liver. According to one of the hypotheses, chickpeas and corn, where there is an amino acid tryptophan, help with this disorder: it penetrates the blood-brain barrier and levels the level of serotonin, a hormone that plays a key role in sexual satisfaction. The mechanism has not yet been studied, but caffeine has a positive effect on men’s sexual health: it increases testosterone levels. The same effect is given by pomegranate and ginger. For the prevention of Peyronie’s disease, the benefits of vitamin E and antioxidants found in citrus fruits, blueberries and blueberries are discussed. There is no clarity about the watermelon either. In 2008, scientists stated that the amino acid citrulline found in it causes vasodilation and, in fact, acts like Viagra. However, the evidence is scarce. For example, in 2018, Japanese scientists showed that the combined treatment of L-citrulline and resveratrol, which are rich in grapes, nuts and cocoa, improves sexual function.

MOSCOW, October 23 – RIA Novosti, Tatyana Pichugina. Men who prefer organic food are less likely to complain of erectile dysfunction, American scientists say. Nutrition for men

From 30 to 52 percent of men after 40 years of age complain of various disorders that are associated with the inability to have sexual intercourse normally. Most often we are talking about a defective erection.

There are many treatments available, including surgical ones.

Of 271 people, 65 percent ate “normally”, the rest adhered to diets – they ate organic and unprocessed foods, avoided canned food and convenience foods.Twenty-eight percent practiced intermittent fasting. As it turned out, supporters of a healthy diet are less likely to complain about problems with erection.

The authors note – an organic diet improves well-being and provides an influx of energy, and this, in turn, increases libido. It can be assumed that in such food there is less chemistry that depressing the nervous system, but more vitamins, antioxidants and nutritional value. Treatment of erectile dysfunction (potency, erection)

What can be erection problems

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem in men of any age.The older the representative of the stronger sex becomes, the more likely such problems are to appear.

Unlike potency, erection problems are temporary and not regular. In this case, the man loses the ability to have sex only partially. Therefore, it is important not to be ashamed at the first symptoms of a decrease in potency, but to seek help from a specialist.

A decrease in erectile function can manifest itself in different ways. Common Problems:

  1. Decrease in the duration of intercourse for no apparent reason.
  2. Spontaneous erection is absent or appears only after active stimulation from the partner.
  3. The head of the penis is less sensitive, which reduces the brightness of sensations during intimacy.
  4. Decreases or completely disappears attraction to the opposite sex.
  5. An erection appears, but for a short time.
  6. Problems with potency appear during intercourse. The member loses firmness during intercourse.

In addition to the above reasons, erectile dysfunction is manifested by impaired ejaculation. It can be premature ejaculation, its absence, a feeling of incomplete orgasm. There may also be a lethargy of the penis during intercourse.

Provoking factors

The main reason for the violation of potency is physiological disorders associated with age. The more often a man is, the higher the likelihood that he will face this problem. In many cases, a decrease in potency is observed in married couples with a newborn child, but in this case the problem goes away on its own.

In addition to age-related changes, other factors contribute to erectile dysfunction:

  • stress, chronic fatigue;
  • distrust of a partner;
  • malnutrition;
  • bad habits;
  • sedentary lifestyle;
  • fear of failure.

A separate factor is congenital anomalies in the structure of the penis, genitourinary system, and trauma to the penis, in which it is quite difficult to obtain a stable erection.

Men face erection problems in the presence of any disease. These include: diseases of the prostate gland, diabetes mellitus, abnormalities in the cardiovascular system, malfunctions of the thyroid gland, obesity, high blood pressure, neurological diseases, spinal injuries, and more.

Symptoms of erectile dysfunction are manifested against the background of prolonged use of medications aimed at lowering blood pressure. The overuse of steroids for muscle building stimulates a decrease in erection and sex drive, even in young adults.

There are many reasons for the disorder. In order not to face even greater problems later, it is necessary to diagnose the cause in time and start treatment.

Diagnostics and treatment of erectile dysfunction

For the treatment of erectile dysfunction, it is necessary to find out the cause of its occurrence. It is important not to hide the details of the problem and tell the doctor about everything with utmost honesty. Otherwise, the treatment will be ineffective.

The second step is clinical examination and testing. At this stage, the state of internal organs and systems is assessed. To obtain accurate data, an examination of the external genital organs is carried out, tests are submitted. Based on the data obtained, the specialist builds a treatment regimen.

The main directions in the treatment, restoring potency:

  • medicines;
  • 90,069 interviews with a sex therapist.

Various medications help to restore an erection. They differ in properties, and therefore should be taken only as directed by a doctor. In most cases, their action is aimed at improving blood supply in the pelvic organs and stimulating sexual desire, by increasing male hormones in the body.

Another group of medicines is prescribed when diseases of internal organs are detected for their restoration and treatment of inflammatory processes.

A conversation with a psychotherapist and sexologist will help to resolve psychological stress, reduce the level of stress. Treatment for erectile function is achieved here by relieving fears, building confidence and reducing stress levels. In some cases, the main treatment is supplemented by the intake of herbal remedies and exercise.

Congenital anomalies in the structure of the penis are resolved surgically. Supportive therapy and physiotherapy treatments are added to it.

Traditional medicine

Most men, faced with an erection problem, begin treatment with folk remedies. However, uncontrolled intake of even the safest substances will lead to negative consequences, among which allergies will become the most harmless.

It will not be possible to support the body and establish a stable erection with the help of known pills, since this is a temporary solution. However, supplementing your usual diet with foods rich in vitamins can speed up the solution to the problem. Pay attention to eggs, fish, nuts, seafood, herbs, fruits, vegetables, vegetable oils.

Basics of prevention

It is easier not to fight any problems, but to prevent them in advance. Simple rules will help to avoid sexual dysfunction:

  1. Complete, balanced nutrition.
  2. Quitting bad habits.
  3. Active lifestyle. Try to ride a bike, walk, do gymnastics.
  4. Smooth psycho-emotional state. Try to avoid stress and overwork.
  5. Stability. All doctors recommend having a regular sex life with one partner.

It is also important to get enough sleep, to monitor your well-being, not to take medications without an appointment.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the constant inability of men to obtain and maintain an erection of the penis, which is necessary for satisfactory sexual activity. Erection ensures the realization of the copulatory cycle and is one of the components of sexual intercourse along with sexual desire, ejaculation and a sense of pleasure (orgasm), therefore ED is referred to as a sexual disorder. The term ED replaced the outdated concept of “impotence”, which did not give an idea of the essence of the problem and often caused a negative emotional reaction in men. Currently, it is believed that a normal erection is possible only with adequate functioning of the nerves and blood vessels of the penis with the full functioning of the mechanisms of tissue and hormonal regulation. In this regard, the appearance of ED in a man should be considered as a sign indicating the likely onset of the development of dangerous diseases, in particular, diseases of the cardiovascular system.

What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?

Large-scale studies conducted in many countries around the world have shown that ED is an extremely common problem. This disease is observed in more than half of Russians aged 22 to 77 years, while the proportion of men suffering from it, as well as the degree of its severity, increases with age [1]. In the development of ED, two leading components are distinguished – psychogenic, associated with psychoemotional factors, and organic, due to the presence of diseases.Psychogenic ED is more often observed in young men, it can be caused by a conflict situation in the relationship of partners or some kind of emotional stress, for example, problems at work. Organic ED usually develops in older men, against the background of atherosclerotic vascular lesions, arterial hypertension, metabolic disorders – dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, age-related androgen deficiency. At the same time, in men with an organic nature of ED, a psychogenic component is often present, due to the lack of confidence in the ability to get and maintain an erection, the fear of failure in an attempt to have intercourse.Obviously, in this regard, each patient with ED requires an individual approach.

Who is at risk of developing the disease in the first place?

According to modern concepts, the highest probability of developing ED is in men with signs known as risk factors for the development of coronary heart disease (IHD): low physical activity, overweight and obesity, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, metabolic syndrome.

In addition, ED often develops against the background of drug therapy, for example, when correcting arterial hypertension with beta-blockers of the first generations or thiazide diuretics, and is also a frequent complication of surgical interventions on the pelvic organs.

Therefore, it is so important for ED to conduct a comprehensive examination of a man and recommend a set of measures aimed at correcting existing disorders in addition to selecting adequate pharmacotherapy to normalize erectile function. This personalized approach allows you to count on the restoration of normal metabolism in the corpora cavernosa and the return of your own erectile function.

What are the treatments for erectile dysfunction? How is this disease treated in Russia? What experience of dysfunction treatment exists abroad?

We can say with confidence that today, almost 100% of men with ED can achieve erection restoration. It should be noted that the approaches to the treatment of patients with ED in our country and abroad do not differ in principle. This was facilitated by the wide dissemination of recommendations prepared by the European Association of Urologists [2] and their approval by the leadership of the Russian Society of Urology.

First of all, with ED, the existing risk factors should be eliminated, reversible pathological conditions should be eliminated, if possible, and the man and his partner should be informed about the essence of the problem, suggest which ways to optimize sexual stimulation to eliminate ED can be applied taking into account individual characteristics.Pharmacological treatment with tableted phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors – sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil and udenafil – is effective first-line therapy in about 80% of patients. Sildenafil became the first iPDE5 recommended for ED correction since 1998, and therefore today it is the most fully studied drug of this group in real clinical practice.

Placebo-controlled studies have confirmed the dose-dependent ability of sildenafil to normalize erection and improve all indicators of the index of sexual function: 56%, 77% and 84% of those taking 25, 50 and 100 mg of this drug, respectively, noted this within 6 months. At the same time, both men and their partners noted an increase in self-esteem and quality of life. Side effects of sildenafil are rare and include headache, hot flashes and dyspepsia, however, in most cases, their severity was insignificant and did not lead to the need to discontinue the drug [3].

Initially, clinicians were advised to use a starting dose of sildenafil 50 mg, if necessary, depending on the effectiveness and tolerability, it should be increased to 100 mg or reduced to 25 mg.In addition, a lower initial dose of 25 mg is indicated for use in men with renal and hepatic insufficiency and in combination therapy with inhibitors of the CYP3A4 isoenzyme (erythromycin, saquinavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole). This approach, in order to reduce the risk of postural hypotension, is also justified in men taking alpha-blockers. Later, publications appeared that contributed to the development of ideas about a personalized approach to the selection of the dosage of sildenafil in men with ED.A lower dosage can be used for initial and less pronounced manifestations of ED, a higher dosage is justified in cases of severe lesions of the penile nerves and blood vessels to achieve the maximum effect and in the hope of normalizing the function of the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa. In this regard, a man with ED must necessarily consult a specialist urologist to choose an approach appropriate for his pathological state. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of copulatory activity, risk factors for development and the clinical picture of ED, as well as the presence and severity of unwanted side effects [4].

The appearance in Russian pharmacies of Tornetis® (sildenafil) by Sandoz in the form of a 100 mg tablet with a unique dosing system – a uniform distribution of the active substance, suggesting the possibility of dividing it into four equal parts, makes it possible to widely vary the dosage of the drug in accordance with the individual needs of each patient …

In the absence of the effect of PDE5, men can be recommended intracavernous or intraurethral administration of vasoactive drugs that stimulate erection, the use of vacuum erectors, and a combination of several methods is possible. If an erectile response does not occur, or if further application of conservative approaches is impossible for any reason, patients are offered surgical treatment – penile prosthetics.
