Guess which ones are the good ones? Yes, plant-based sweeteners are always preferred as they are more natural. Some of the examples include Erythritol and Stevia.
Unfortunately, Bang energy drink contains Sucralose and Acesulfame Potassium, both of which are artificial sweeteners.

You should consume it in very small amounts initially and check how it affects your blood ketone levels.

- They are either loaded with heavy amounts of sugar which may kick you out of ketosis, or
- They may have artificial sweeteners with unpleasant side effects
With that said, moderation is the key to enjoying these keto-friendly energy drinks.

Bang Energy Drinks are definitely keto-friendly as they have zero carbs, zero calories, and zero sugar!
They are sweetened with Sucralose which is generally considered safe on a keto diet. However, it may interfere with ketosis in a very small percentage of people.
But I’ve never come across anyone having issues with Sucralose! Overall, Bang Energy Drink can be a great keto-friendly beverage.
Are Bang Energy Drinks Keto Friendly?
Nutritionally, Bang is similar to other low-carb energy drinks such as Rockstar Sugar-Free and Monster Ultra. It achieves a sweet taste with zero carbs because its sweeteners are sucralose and acesulfame potassium, both of which are keto-friendly. It also contains 300 mg of caffeine (roughly two cups of coffee), which can aid in ketosis.
Bang’s flagship ingredient is Creatyl-L-Leucine, which they refer to as “Super Creatine.” Creatine is a popular supplement among weightlifters, as it helps muscles recover energy more quickly, though there’s not much research available on super creatine. Opponents claim that Bang does not contain creatine at all, and that the label is misleading consumers (see below).
Allegations of false advertising
As of 2019, Bang is currently the subject of two lawsuits for false advertising. The first is a class-action lawsuit from consumers, and the second is from Bang’s competitor, Monster.
Both lawsuits allege that:
- Bang contains Creatyl-L-Leucine (“Super Creatine”), branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), and coenzyme Q10 in such small quantities that it has no effect on performance.
- Vital Pharmaceuticals (aka VPX), Bang’s manufacturer, uses the term “pharmaceuticals” in their company name to mislead customers into believing that they are a pharmaceuticals company rather than a beverage manufacturer.
- The company claimed without evidence that Bang is an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease, and other forms of dementia.
Caveats
The keto community continues to debate whether artificial sweeteners have a place in the keto diet. The FDA stated that both sucralose and acesulfame potassium are safe for consumption with support from more than 90 studies. However, these artificial sweeteners can interfere with ketosis for a minority of consumers. If you’re unsure of how these sweeteners affect you, try Bang in small amounts and monitor for changes in your weight or interference with your ketosis.
Caffeine in drinks like Bang can improve your cognitive performance, but be careful not to overconsume it. A recent meta-study found that drinking multiple energy drinks each day can have adverse effects on your heart, blood pressure, and quality of sleep.

Are Energy Drinks Keto? Keto Energy Drinks Ultimate Guide
In another article in this blog, we explored the relevance of diet sodas, specifically Diet Coke and Coke Zero, on low carb and keto diets. There is another beverage that is very popular besides more traditional sodas and their diet counter-parts: energy drinks. Red Bull quips in their advertisements that their energy drink “gives you wings.” However, will drinking energy drinks help us fly to new heights with our keto diet, or bring us too close to the sun and burn away all the progress we have fought to make?
The question is, can I drink energy drinks on a keto diet? You are allowed to drink specific sugar-free energy drinks, such as Red Bull Sugarfree (very low carbs), Rockstar Sugar-free (no carbs) or Monster Zero Ultra (no sugar and no calories). However, energy drinks are not the healthiest choice, so moderation at least, or a different drink is recommended.
A Closer Look at Energy Drink
Monster Zero Ultra
Let’s zoom in on these
three energy drinks that comply with a keto diet. Monster Zero Ultra’s label shows us that it has no calories, two
carbs and zero sugars in one can. It also has a number of Vitamin B contents,
from B3 to B12. These are all good things, so then why is there so much caution
regarding the health of this drink?
The challenge is the
ingredients used to make up for the absence of calories, carbs and sugars. These
ingredients are not free of problems themselves. Monster Zero Ultra contains
artificial sweeteners, which have been mired in controversy in the scientific
and health research communities since they first began to be used.
Acesulfame Potassium
in particular is noted as a very potent sugar replacement, said to be roughly 200
times sweeter than sugar. These sugar replacements can cause our brains and
bodies to crave sugar, while not actually supplying any, so we may end up being
continuously drawn to foods that are sugary and not right for our keto diet.
There is also a long debate
about artificial sweeteners being potentially linked to cancer. The research is
not definitive, but it is enough to give cause for concern. This is also true
of sodium benzoate and benzoic acid, which may also be found in Monster Zero
Ultra. The presence of these two can lead to chemical reactions within the
beverage that may produce benzene, a known carcinogen.
Lastly, the presence
of caffeine and a high number of processed ingredients can be a cause for
concern for some individuals. This is more of a case-by-case concern, but if
you are already ingesting caffeine from other sources, or are sensitive to
processed foods and beverages, Monster Zero Ultra may be a poor choice.
A Closer Look at Energy Drink
Rockstar Sugar Free
Looking at the next recommendation,
Rockstar Sugar Free, we find a lot
of similar ingredients (and therefore, issues) to Monster Zero Ultra. Like
Monster Zero Ultra, it passes the superficial tests for a keto diet of not
having carbs, calories or sugar. And again, it has some vitamins included in
its nutrition readout also, though with some differences to Monster Zero Ultra
(it has riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid, which are not found in Monster
Zero Ultra).
As with Monster Zero
Ultra, however, it has artificial sweeteners, sodium benzoate / benzoic acid,
acesulfame potassium and is highly processed. We have already discussed the
challenges with these ingredients.
In addition to those
ingredients, Rockstar Sugar Free also contains industrial caramel coloring. The
process involved in making industrial caramel coloring is a particularly
concerning one, resulting in a reaction that produces 4-methylimidazole, an ingredient shown by government research to
cause lung, liver and thyroid cancer as well as leukemia in lab animals. This
led the state of California to label anything containing industrial caramel
coloring as potential cancer-causing.
Businesses that use caramel
coloring dodged this regulation by lowering the quantity included to a level
that no longer requires them to display this warning, despite it still being
there in some quantity. This kind of risk does little to make this drink
recommendable as a healthy choice in any diet.
Overall, Rockstar
Sugar Free falls victim to as many criticisms as Monster Zero Ultra, and then
some. For a safe beverage to go with your keto diet, look elsewhere.
A Closer Look at Energy Drink
Red Bull Sugarfree
Red Bull Sugarfree
contains 10 calories per can, 6g of carbs and no sugars. It also has a slightly
smaller list of extra nutrients than Rockstar Sugar Free or Monster Zero Ultra,
but only narrowly. These numbers are higher than zero, but still very low even
within the very restrictive guidelines of a keto diet.
Like Monster Zero
Ultra and Rockstar Sugar Free, Red Bull Sugarfree is highly processed and
contains artificial sweeteners and caffeine. It does not contain the industrial
caramel coloring found in Rockstar Sugar Free, nor the sodium benzoate /
benzoic acid found in both of the others.
Unlike the others, it
does contain aspartame and artificial colors. Aspartame is an artificial
sweetener that is separated from others in that it has been scrutinized more
intensely than any other single artificial sweetener. More research is needed,
but at this time there is enough research to encourage caution.
Artificial colors,
similar to aspartame and industrial caramel coloring, have been found to have
the potential for significant health risks, including hyperactivity in
children, allergic reactions, and even cancer.
As with the last two,
there are definite problems with Red Bull Sugarfree. Looking at all three
together, none of them can be considered ‘safe’ in their own right, even if
they satisfy the conditions for a keto diet.
Why Not Regular Energy Drinks?
Having
looked at three energy drinks that work for a keto diet, we have to wonder: why
wouldn’t a regular energy drink work? Seeing how many problems are caused by
the strange mixtures of ingredients needed for a ‘diet’ energy drink, it is reasonable
to wonder if regular energy drinks might be better.
Looking
at a regular Monster Energy Drink,
we see that it contains 210 calories per can, 54g of carbs from sugar. Given
that on a keto diet, daily carb intake should ideally be kept below 50g per
day, one regular Monster Energy Drink already puts us over that threshold.
Immediately, this shows us why the options above were the ones recommended for
a keto diet.
Looking
at the other counterparts from our earlier discussion, Red Bull still contains 110 calories per can and 28g of carbs, with
27g coming from sugar. Less by comparison, but still a lot given the strict
limits of a keto diet. This means that even if regular energy drinks didn’t
have as many problems as diet energy drinks, it would be irrelevant for a keto
diet as they simply don’t pass the basic tests of what can be included.
The Priority of Health in a Keto Diet
Looking
at energy drinks in a Keto diet has ended up looking quite similar to this
blog’s other article on diet sodas in low-carb diets. While the recommended
energy drinks superficially avoid what needs to be avoided to be relevant to a
keto diet, they come with a host of other potential problems. This is worsened
by the fact that some ingredients are incompletely researched, so the health
problems of diet energy drinks that we already know about may only be the tip
of the iceberg.
What
this question boils down to is simple – what matters more: our desire for a
tasty, pick-me-up beverage, or the overall health goals of a keto diet? A keto
diet has many potential benefits, including weight loss, improved heart health
and even reduced risks of cancers. In contrast, diet energy drinks have the
potential to worsen these categories by producing unsatisfied sugar cravings,
dehydration, over-caffeination and even increasing risks of cancer. The Keto
Diet moves the ball forward, while drinking these energy drinks can move the
ball back.
Anyone
drinking energy drinks of any variety would be wise to do some occasional
updated research, as more studies are completed on controversial ingredients
such as artificial sweeteners and artificial colors. For now, moderate consumption
of the drinks discussed above is the safest option while pursuing a keto diet.

other concerns to consider as we saw above, so the soda guideline of three cans
per week may be a safer bet if you really wish to keep drinking energy drinks.

ARE MONSTER ENERGY DRINKS KETO FRIENDLY Archives
I get it, we all need a pick me up now and then. No matter where you go, energy drinks are lined up at the checkout register at your favorite grocery store and even at every gas station.
But can energy drinks kick you out of ketosis? Energy drinks in and of themselves won’t kick you out of ketosis unless they are also filled with tons of sugar. Most sugar-free energy drinks are generally ok when it comes to getting in and staying in ketosis as they contain very little to no calories.
In this article, I’ll go over why an energy drink may or may not kick you out of ketosis, what’s in most of the popular energy drinks, and things you should look out for to stay in ketosis.
Can energy drinks kick you out of ketosis?
Energy drinks in and of itself don’t contain any ingredients that would inherently kick you out of ketosis. The ONLY ingredient that it could potentially contain that would kick you out of ketosis is sugar.
As long as you are getting the no/low-carb version of the energy drink, you should generally be ok to consume it on your ketogenic diet. Your best bet is to check the nutrition label and see if there are added sugars and how many carbohydrates the drink contains if any.
Just as a precaution, of course, because you never know.
In some cases, certain energy drinks will list sugar alcohols under carbohydrates. Still, due to the way sugar alcohols are digested (or better, not digested), they shouldn’t impede your ketogenic diet and shouldn’t count toward your net carb intake.1https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16277764
Ketosis is a metabolic state that occurs when the body produces ketones. Your body will only produce ketones when carbohydrates are in short supply, and liver glycogen stores are low, which is usually a result of dietary carb restriction.
What are in energy drinks?
Taking a look at the most popular low-carb energy drinks on the market, you can see that that the main ingredients are generally:
- Carbonated water
- Citric acid
- Sugar alcohol or sweetener of choice
- Natural and artificial flavors
- Caffeine (The main energy ingredient)
While the other ingredients may vary, you are more or less getting the above ingredients in your energy drink.
As far as proprietary blends or other miscellaneous ingredients in the energy drink, they are usually in such insignificant amounts to make a meaningful difference. The additional ingredients are more for marketing and adding fancy words on the label, then providing any stimulatory or cognitive benefit.
This includes ingredients like:
- Taurine
- GInseng
- L-Carnitine
- Guarana
- Creatine
- BCAA’s
- B Vitamins
- Inositol
- CoQ10
This isn’t to say that the ingredients don’t do anything, but they are in such small quantities that you wouldn’t be getting an effective dose. Most of the stimulatory effects you will notice are coming from the caffeine.
That said, none of the ingredients above would have any effect on ketosis to any measurable degree.
Moral of the story, if you want more stimulation, get the drink with the highest amount of caffeine.
But is X energy drink keto-friendly?
Since I know some people will inevitably ask, below are a few of the most popular energy drinks on the market today and how they may or may not affect ketosis.
Is Rockstar zero carb keto-friendly?
I don’t know what it is, but Rockstar is my favorite of the low/no-carb energy drinks. Since this is my blog, I get to put it first on the list, and obviously, that will mean that you can drink Rockstar zero carb on a ketogenic diet.
Don’t confuse Rockstar zero-carb with Rockstar sugar-free, even though both are acceptable on keto.
Rockstar Pure Zero will generally contain between 240mg and 300mg of caffeine per can with erythritol (sugar alcohol) as its primary sweetener.
While I don’t particularly get any stimulatory effect from caffeine, sometimes I like to drink something other than water. Call me weird, but I like the taste of energy drinks.
What’s even weirder is that my favorite flavor of the Rockstar pure zero is cotton candy, and, generally, I’m not too fond of cotton candy or birthday cake flavors.
Are Reign energy drinks keto-friendly?
Reign is probably the biggest (newest) energy drink on the market today, brought to you by…
Monster Beverage Corp., the same company that has the popular energy drink, wait for it… Monster Energy.
Bet you didn’t see that one coming.
Monster undoubtedly had to come out with another energy drink to compete with the other relatively new energy drink Bang from VPX Sports.
While I can’t comment on the different flavors of Reign, I’ve been getting more and more questions about it as of late and whether or not you can drink Reign energy drinks on a ketogenic diet.
Are reign energy drinks keto friendly? Yes, you can drink Reign energy drinks on a ketogenic diet. An entire can of Reign contains ~2g of carbohydrates, so make sure you count them toward your net carb count for the day.
Reign energy drinks report having 300mg of caffeine per can and sweetened with Sucralose (known by the popular brand name Splenda).
Are Bang energy drinks keto-friendly?
I want to say Bang has been getting all the attention lately. Ever since Bang hit the streets, the amount of people who ask me if they can drink Bang on a ketogenic diet has become too many to count.
Are Bang energy drinks keto-friendly? Yes, Bang energy drinks are keto-friendly as they are listed as having 0 calories and 0 carbohydrates.
Each can of Bang also lists having 300mg of caffeine and sweetened with Sucralose.
Will drinking bang energy drinks kick you out of ketosis? Again, the answer is no.
Is Redline keto-friendly?
Another popular energy drink, mainly among fitness enthusiasts, is Redline.
What most people don’t realize is that Redline came way before Bang, and Bang might be kind of a spinoff of Redline from VPX since it has been around for quite a while now.
Bang was VPX’s way of getting into the mainstream energy drink game, and they were quite successful at doing so from what I can tell.
Is redline keto-friendly? Similar to Bang, Redline is also keto-friendly. Redline lists as having 0 calories, meaning 0 carbohydrates. The primary sweetener in Redline is Sucralose, and each bottle also contains 300mg of caffeine.
Are Monster energy drinks keto-friendly?
One of the original energy drinks on the block, aside from red bull, is Monster energy.
Are Monster energy drinks keto-friendly? The Monster energy drinks labeled as Monster zero are keto-friendly and may be drinken on a ketogenic diet without worry about being knocked out of ketosis.
Each can of Monster Zero has 140-160mg of caffeine per can and 2g of carbohydrates, with 1g coming from erythritol. Effectively, each can contains 2g of net carbs since there are two servings per can.
Additionally, Monster zero energy drinks are sweetened with both erythritol and Sucralose.
The Takeaway
Most low/zero carb energy drinks on the market are perfectly acceptable to drink while following a ketogenic diet.
There is no need to worry about energy drinks or vitamins preventing or kicking you out of ketosis unless drinking the non-sugar free versions.

Drinking a sugary soft drink on a keto diet is never a good idea, but size truly matters. A large bottle (i.e 33 ounces or 1 liter or more) has more carbs than almost an entire week’s keto allowance.
A can of soda can kick you out of ketosis for a day, but a large bottle may prevent ketosis for a number of days or even a week.
If you have diabetes or insulin resistance, avoid all sugary soft drinks in order to keep your blood glucose stable and improve your health.
Diet sodas — yay or nay?
Over the last 40 years, diet sodas — without calories or carbs — have had a huge market around the world, promoting the idea that you can have a sugary-tasting beverage without any of the harms and consequences of real sugar. Alas, it is not that simple.
Sweetened with artificial products like aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame K or refined stevia, these diet drinks are not necessarily helpful for sustained weight loss or improved health.
Their problems include maintaining cravings for sweet tastes, which can undermine keto progress and keep sugar addictions in place. Acting on the same taste bud sensors as real sugar, they blunt the ability to taste the natural flavors and sweetness of real food. Some sweeteners, such as sucralose, can still cause a blood glucose and insulin response and contribute to fat storage. Observational studies show that drinking diet soft drinks is associated with higher BMIs and higher rates of cardiovascular disease.
Other studies have noted that their long term impact on many health factors is still unknown, but that they may alter many body processes, such as metabolism, brain reward systems, appetite regulation, and the microbiome.
Studies supporting the use of diet soft drinks in weight loss programs are often conducted by the diet drink industry. A 2017 study found that much of the research on artificial sweeteners has been funded by industry and features conflict of interest, research bias, and positive results that cannot be reproduced.
Drinking diet soda may or may not be better than drinking sugary soda. However, one thing is certain. If you can cut both out of your daily beverage habits, your health and waistline will likely thank you.

Alcohol on keto: yea or nay?
Unlike many diets, which usually forbid all alcohol, the keto diet allows moderate consumption of specific alcoholic beverages.
