What Causes Bed-Wetting in Adults, and How Can You Treat It?

A lot of folks think bed-wetting is something that only happens to kids, but it’s a problem that can hit grown-ups, too. You may feel embarrassed to wake up to wet sheets, but it’s not your fault. It could be due to a medical condition, medicine, or a problem with your bladder. You’ve got lots of ways to fix it.

Causes

If you start wetting the bed as an adult, see your doctor. You may hear them call your problem nocturnal enuresis, which is the medical name of the condition. Some of the reasons it may be happening to you:

Your kidneys make more pee than normal. A hormone called ADH tells your kidneys to make less urine, and you normally make less of this hormone at night. When you have bed-wetting issues, you may not make enough of this hormone or your kidneys might not respond well to it.

A form of diabetes called diabetes insipidus also affects ADH levels, causing you to make more urine.

Your bladder can’t hold enough urine. When there isn’t enough room in your bladder, pee can leak.

Overactive bladder (OAB). Your bladder muscles normally squeeze when you’re ready to pee. In OAB, these muscles squeeze too often or at the wrong times.

Medicine. Some drugs you take can irritate your bladder, such as sleeping pills or antipsychotics like:

Your bed-wetting may also be due to conditions that affect your body’s ability to store and hold urine. For instance, bladder cancer and prostate cancer can cause it. So can diseases of the brain and spine, such as a seizure disorder, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease.

Some other possible causes are:

How Is Bed-Wetting Diagnosed?

Your doctor will do an exam and ask about your symptoms and health history. Keep a diary so you’ll have the answers to their questions. Write down things like:

  • How often and what time your bed-wetting happens
  • How much urine comes out (a lot or a little)
  • What and how much you drank before bed
  • Any other symptoms you’ve had

Your doctor will do tests to diagnose the problem, such as:

Urinalysis. It checks a sample of your urine to look for an infection or other conditions of the urinary tract — the collection of organs that are involved with urine like the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

Urine culture. Your doctor sends a small sample of your urine to a lab, where technicians put it in a special dish with nutrients. This test looks for bacteria or yeast in your urine. It can diagnose a urinary tract infection.

Uroflowmetry. You pee into a special funnel to measure how much urine you make and how quickly it flows out.

Post-void residual urine measurement. This test measures how much urine is left in your bladder after you pee.

How Do You Treat Bed-Wetting?

Your doctor may suggest you start by making a few changes to your daily and nightly routines:

Try bladder retraining. Go to the bathroom at set times during the day and night. Slowly increase the amount of time between bathroom visits — for example, by 15 minutes at a time. This will train your bladder to hold more fluid.

Don’t drink right before bed. That way, you won’t make as much urine. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can stimulate your bladder.

Use an alarm clock. Set it to wake you up at regular times during the night so you can use the bathroom.

Try a bed-wetting alarm system. You attach it to your underwear or a pad on your bed. It will alert you as soon as you start to wet the bed.

Take medicines. Several can help with bed-wetting. Desmopressin (DDAVP) reduces the amount of urine your kidneys make.

Other drugs calm overactive bladder muscles, such as:

If medicines and other treatments don’t work, your doctor might recommend one of these procedures:

Bladder augmentation. It’s an operation that makes your bladder larger, which raises the amount of urine it can hold.

Sacral nerve stimulation. It helps control an overactive bladder. Your doctor puts a small device into your body that sends signals to nerves in your lower back that help control the flow of urine.

Detrusor myectomy. It’s a major operation that treats an overactive bladder. Your surgeon removes part or all of the muscles around your bladder to stop them from contracting at the wrong times.

Tips to Deal With Wetness

Until you can get bed-wetting under control, take some simple steps to manage the situation:

  • Put a waterproof cover or pad over your mattress or sheets to keep them dry.
  • Wear absorbent underwear or pads to bed.
  • Use special skin cleansing cloths and lotions to prevent your skin from getting irritated.

If you try one treatment and it doesn’t work, go back to your doctor. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right solution to bed-wetting.

Purpose, Procedure, Types, and Recovery

A woman might feel an ache in their lower abdomen. Or they may have trouble peeing. Maybe sexual intercourse is uncomfortable. If you experience any of these, the problem might be your bladder.

The bladder sits in sort of a “hammock” of muscle and tissue inside your abdomen. When the tissue gets weak, the bladder can break through it and go into your vagina. Doctors call this bladder prolapse. It’s a common condition, and it’s treatable.

Symptoms

If you have a mild case, you may not even realize it. But if you do have symptoms, here’s what they might include:

  • You feel pressure in your pelvis or vagina
  • When you cough or lift something, you feel discomfort in your abdomen
  • You have repeated bladder infections
  • Your urine may leak out unexpectedly. Or, when you pee, the stream might be weak or take a long time.
  • You might feel pain during sex
  • You have trouble putting in tampons or applicators
  • If you have an extreme case, tissue may bulge through the opening of your vagina. It might make you feel like you’re sitting on an egg.

The symptoms might be strongest if you have to stand for a while. When you lie down, they may ease.

When you discuss bladder prolapse with your doctor, they may call it by another name: cystocele.

Your doctor might also discuss a condition that affects the tube that carries urine from your bladder outside your body. It’s called the urethra, and it also can break through its support and into the vagina. When that happens, it’s called urethrocele. It is not unusual for it and cystocele to occur at the same time.

Should You Have Surgery?

If your symptoms are making your life difficult, surgery may be the answer. You need to think about a few things:

Your age. If you’re young, keep in mind that bladder prolapse can happen again. Even if you have surgery now, you may end up needing another operation down the road. If you’re older, any other health issues you have may affect your decision.

Your plans about having children. If you want more children, it’s best to hold off on surgery until you decide your family is complete.

Your general health. Surgery has some risks, such as infection, blood clots, or problems with the anesthetic. If you have a heart condition, diabetes, or breathing difficulties, any of these things could make an operation riskier. So could smoking or obesity.

Also, talk with your doctor about the chances that surgery could cause new problems. You might develop urinary incontinence — urine leaking out without your control. Sex might become uncomfortable, and you might feel pain in your pelvis.

Types of Surgery

There are two types of surgery for bladder prolapse. The surgeon might:

Close off or narrow the vagina to create support for the bladder. This makes sexual intercourse impossible. Doctors call this obliterative surgery.

Build back the tissue that holds up the bladder. To do this, the surgeon might use the body’s own tissue or insert artificial mesh. Doctors call this reconstructive surgery.

Let’s look at reconstructive surgery more closely:

The surgeon has a few options. They might rebuild the support for the bladder by using your body’s own tissue. Or, they might insert a mesh and attach it to a bone. A mesh has risks though, including the chance that it may cause an infection or deteriorate over time. So doctors generally restrict it to special situations — if a woman had previous surgery that failed, or if their own tissue is too weak to rebuild.

Depending on what the surgeon plans to do, they may work through a cut in your abdomen. That might involve a technique called laparoscopic surgery. For that, they makes very small cuts and uses special instruments through the openings. Or, instead of cutting into your abdomen, the surgeon might operate through the vagina.

If you have surgery, the medical team may put you to sleep. Or they may use a drug that makes only the affected part of your body numb.

After the Surgery

The time it takes to recover depends on what the surgeon does. For the first few weeks, you should avoid strenuous exercise and sexual intercourse. You’ll probably have to take a few weeks off from work.

Treatment without Surgery

As you think about surgery, you also should consider available therapies and treatments that don’t involve an operation.

Exercises might strengthen the muscles that help hold the bladder in place. They’re called Kegel exercises. To do them, you squeeze and release the muscles that cut off the flow of urine.

A device called a pessary might help support your bladder. This is a plastic or rubber ring that your doctor fits especially to you. It’s a common alternative to surgery, especially if surgery would be risky for you. Your doctor would show you how to clean it and put it back in place.

Estrogen therapy might help if you’ve already gone through menopause. Estrogen helps the muscles in the pelvis stay strong, but the body produces less of it after menopause. Replacing it with an estrogen cream, pill, or ring would make up for that loss.

A mild case of bladder prolapse may not need treatment at all. Your doctor might suggest that you just wait and see if the symptoms get worse.

Bed-wetting – Symptoms and causes

Overview

Bed-wetting — also called nighttime incontinence or nocturnal enuresis — is involuntary urination while asleep after the age at which staying dry at night can be reasonably expected.

Soggy sheets and pajamas — and an embarrassed child — are a familiar scene in many homes. But don’t despair. Bed-wetting isn’t a sign of toilet training gone bad. It’s often just a normal part of a child’s development.

Generally, bed-wetting before age 7 isn’t a concern. At this age, your child may still be developing nighttime bladder control.

If bed-wetting continues, treat the problem with patience and understanding. Lifestyle changes, bladder training, moisture alarms and sometimes medication may help reduce bed-wetting.

Symptoms

Most kids are fully toilet trained by age 5, but there’s really no target date for developing complete bladder control. Between the ages of 5 and 7, bed-wetting remains a problem for some children. After 7 years of age, a small number of children still wet the bed.

When to see a doctor

Most children outgrow bed-wetting on their own — but some need a little help. In other cases, bed-wetting may be a sign of an underlying condition that needs medical attention.

Consult your child’s doctor if:

  • Your child still wets the bed after age 7
  • Your child starts to wet the bed after a few months of being dry at night
  • Bed-wetting is accompanied by painful urination, unusual thirst, pink or red urine, hard stools, or snoring

Causes

No one knows for sure what causes bed-wetting, but various factors may play a role:

  • A small bladder. Your child’s bladder may not be developed enough to hold urine produced during the night.
  • Inability to recognize a full bladder. If the nerves that control the bladder are slow to mature, a full bladder may not wake your child — especially if your child is a deep sleeper.
  • A hormone imbalance. During childhood, some kids don’t produce enough anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) to slow nighttime urine production.
  • Urinary tract infection. This infection can make it difficult for your child to control urination. Signs and symptoms may include bed-wetting, daytime accidents, frequent urination, red or pink urine, and pain during urination.
  • Sleep apnea. Sometimes bed-wetting is a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which the child’s breathing is interrupted during sleep — often due to inflamed or enlarged tonsils or adenoids. Other signs and symptoms may include snoring and daytime drowsiness.
  • Diabetes. For a child who’s usually dry at night, bed-wetting may be the first sign of diabetes. Other signs and symptoms may include passing large amounts of urine at once, increased thirst, fatigue and weight loss in spite of a good appetite.
  • Chronic constipation. The same muscles are used to control urine and stool elimination. When constipation is long term, these muscles can become dysfunctional and contribute to bed-wetting at night.
  • A structural problem in the urinary tract or nervous system. Rarely, bed-wetting is related to a defect in the child’s neurological system or urinary system.

Risk factors

Bed-wetting can affect anyone, but it’s twice as common in boys as in girls. Several factors have been associated with an increased risk of bed-wetting, including:

  • Stress and anxiety. Stressful events — such as becoming a big brother or sister, starting a new school, or sleeping away from home — may trigger bed-wetting.
  • Family history. If one or both of a child’s parents wet the bed as children, their child has a significant chance of wetting the bed, too.
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Bed-wetting is more common in children who have ADHD.

Complications

Although frustrating, bed-wetting without a physical cause doesn’t pose any health risks. However, bed-wetting can create some issues for your child, including:

  • Guilt and embarrassment, which can lead to low self-esteem
  • Loss of opportunities for social activities, such as sleepovers and camp
  • Rashes on the child’s bottom and genital area — especially if your child sleeps in wet underwear

Understanding Nocturnal Enuresis – Bladder & Bowel Community

Bed wetting causes many practical problems, such as constantly having to change wet sheets and bedding. Bed wetting can affect staying away overnight, going on holiday or business trips. Bed wetting can affect sleep patterns and often it causes frustration and exhaustion.

Bedwetting can also affect self-esteem which can put a strain on personal relationships.

Types Of Nocturnal Enuresis

Persistent Primary Nocturnal Enuresis is a condition which starts during childhood, where night time dryness has not been achieved for longer than six months. About 2 – 3% of adults over 18 years of age have this type of nocturnal enuresis. Adult Onset Secondary Enuresis is defined as nocturnal enuresis in which night time dryness has been achieved at some point in life. Dryness may have occurred for many years but then night time wetting suddenly begins at an older age.

What Causes Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis)?

There are many causes of bedwetting and others remain unclear. Usually people produce less urine when they are sleeping. However, some people produce larger amounts of urine during the night, which may explain why the bladder needs emptying then.

So why don’t you wake up when you need to go to the toilet? Unfortunately, there is no clear cut answer to this question.

Research has shown that nocturnal enuresis can occur due to a genetic link. Though this is not true for everyone, evidence has shown that bedwetting is hereditary. One study showed that someone with two bedwetting parents has a 77% chance of also becoming a bedwetter. When one parent wet the bed as a child, then their child was found to have a 40% chance of becoming a bedwetter.

Another cause put forward for primary nocturnal enuresis is a smaller than average bladder. This does not mean that the actual size of the bladder is smaller in nocturnal enuresis patients, rather that their functional bladder capacity (FBC) is a smaller volume. The FBC is the amount of urine the bladder holds before sending a signal to the brain to indicate the need to void. The overactivity of the detrusor muscle (bladder) indicates that the muscle is never fully relaxed during the filling phase and therefore the bladder capacity is not as large.

Some people have an ‘overactive’ or ‘unstable’ bladder (OAB) which causes problems at night as well as during the day. Several studies have found a high incidence of detrusor instability (OAB) with nocturnal enuresis. Detrusor overactivity has been found in up to 70 – 80% of primary nocturnal enuresis patients.

The amount and type of drinks that you have is important. We all need fluids to stay healthy, but some drinks can irritate the bladder or make the body produce urine more quickly than usual. Alcohol, and drinks that contain caffeine (such as tea, coffee, hot chocolate and cola), can affect you in these ways.

Some medicines prescribed for completely unrelated problems can change the way your urinary system works and can cause you to have less control than normal. These medications include common drugs used for heart and blood pressure problems, or for mental illness and anxiety.

An infection in the urine (urinary tract infection, ‘UTI’) can sometimes cause bed wetting. Stress or anxiety can also cause the problem, which might last long after the stress has gone.

If you start bed wetting again as an adult and this persists, it could be the result of a more serious underlying problem. If this is the case, you need to go to the doctor immediately for further investigation.

What Help Is Available?

If you are concerned about your problem and it is starting to affect your day-to-day life make an appointment to see your doctor, continence nurse or specialist physiotherapist. A continence nurse and specialist physiotherapist are healthcare professionals who specialise in bladder and bowel problems.

It would be a good idea to keep a record of your bladder activity for a few days before your appointment with your doctor or nurse. You would need to keep a record for at least 3 days and filling in a bladder diary is a simple way of doing this. Please visit our Bladder Diary/Retraining page for more information.

A urine dipstick test may be done to rule out a urinary tract infection. The doctor may also arrange for you to go to a hospital for special tests on your bladder, these tests are called Urodynamics.

Do You Wet the Bed After a Night of Drinking? Here’s Why – Cleveland Clinic

Sometimes, after a night out, you may have heard of someone wetting the bed or maybe you have first-hand experience with this. Embarrassing as it is, this can happen to anyone. What happens if imbibing leads you to involuntary peeing throughout the night?

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. Policy

Waking up in urine-soaked sheets is not anyone’s idea of a good time, especially if you’re sharing the bed. Urologist James Ulchaker, MD, helps explain what’s going on in your body that’s causing this involuntary bed-wetting after too many drinks.

1. Alcohol suppresses a hormone in the brain

Nocturnal enuresis, or nighttime bedwetting, can happen when you overindulge because alcohol affects several things in your body that make it more difficult to hold your pee.

We are all equipped with an antidiuretic hormone (ADH) produced by the brain. ADH signals the kidneys to keep them from making too much urine, thereby preventing you from using all of your hydration reserves. Drinking alcohol suppresses ADH production, so your body produces more urine than it normally would.

“When you’re awake, you make up for extra urine by making more trips to the bathroom,” Dr. Ulchaker says. “If you pass out later or are sleeping too soundly, your bladder continues to fill more quickly and gets over-distended. Your body then releases the pressure by urinating,” he says.

But if you’re drinking to excess or late into the night, this suppression of ADH can continue long after you hit the hay. The result is your body is producing a whole lot more urine while you’re dozing than it normally does when you’re sober … which can result in wet sheets.

2. Alcohol irritates a key muscle in your bladder

Alcohol also irritates the detrusor muscle, part of the wall of the bladder that signals when you need to pee. If you’re passed out with inhibitions lowered from a drunken state, you may miss the signals from this muscle and void in your slumber.

3. Extra fluids build up faster

The volume you’re consuming might play a role in increasing the amount in your bladder. Sharing a pitcher of beer during a game or dinner with friends adds significantly to the normal amount of liquids you take in.

But add to this the simple fact of when we usually drink alcohol: evening time! This means you’re drinking closer to the normal time you go to bed, and this can dramatically increase the amount of pee your bladder has to hold through the night. This can really be a problem as you turn out the lights, especially if you already have a difficult time holding your pee under normal circumstances.

What’s more, Dr. Ulchaker says drinking alcohol causes your body to pull from its liquid reserves, which can lead to dehydration and add even more volume in your bladder.

But a main factor with your bladder’s involuntary contractions is caffeine, Dr. Ulchaker says.

4. Caffeine activates the bladder

Remember that muscle in the bladder? The detrusor? Caffeine makes that muscle contract, telling you to pee before the bladder is even full. This allows you to hold less and less urine over time. Because caffeinated beverages so often go hand-in-hand with alcohol (think rum and Coke), this is a double-whammy for your bladder.

An extra precaution to prevent accidents

Of course, drinking too much alcohol isn’t healthy, especially if it’s affecting your ability to hold your urine on a regular basis. If you have an occasional extra drink or two, there are a few ways to reduce your risk of wetting the bed while you sleep.

  • Avoid caffeine before a night out. If you know a night of drinking is in store, avoid extra caffeinated beverages throughout the day or limit the amount of liquids.
  • Switch from large quantities to smaller ones. Instead of that pitcher of beer, consider a gin and tonic or other mixed drink.
  • Make an extra trip to the bathroom right before bed. Be sure to void your bladder completely right before hitting the pillow.
  • Set a middle-of-the-night alarm. You may find that limiting fluids and avoiding caffeine doesn’t help. If you still aren’t able to reliably hold your urine until morning after a night out, Dr. Ulchaker recommends setting a wake-up call during the night to control bed-wetting. This may be annoying, but if it prevents you from waking up in a wet bed, it may be worth it.

Adult Bed-wetting: Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

Bed-wetting (also known as sleep enuresis and urinary incontinence) is a fairly common condition in young children and is seen as a sign of an immature, developing bladder. It is estimated that 15% of children over three, and 10% over five wet the bed occasionally. In fact, most doctors don’t consider bed-wetting in children to be a sign of a problem unless the child is older than seven years old, or the child has begun wetting the bed again after six months of maintaining overnight bladder control.

However, when adults wet the bed it is often an indication of an underlying illness, disease, or a symptom of other untreated medical conditions.

For adults, wetting the bed can not only be a devastatingly embarrassing condition, but it is often a sign of other medical troubles. If you’re an adult who frequently wets the bed, it’s a good idea to discuss your symptoms with your primary care provider to find the root cause of your problem. Here is a list of common causes of sleep enuresis.

Causes of adult bed-wetting

  • Genetics. One of the first places to look for causes of urinary incontinence is whether there is a family history of bed-wetting.

  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)

  • Small bladder

  • Over-active bladder
  • Diabetes

  • Kidney disease
  • Enlarged prostate gland

  • Prostate cancer

  • Bladder cancer

  • Side effects of medications

  • Neurological disorders

  • Stress, anxiety, fear, and other psychological issues

  • Sleep apnea

  • An imbalance of the anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)

Determining the cause of bed-wetting

Discovering the cause of bed-wetting can be tricky as it is often an underlying cause of another medical condition. When seeking treatment for your nocturnal enuresis you can expect one or more of the following routine tests

To help your doctor better determine the causes of your troubles, it’s recommended that you keep track of important bed-wetting information such as:

  • When your accidents are most likely to occur (time of day or night)

  • Amount of urine voided

  • Daily intake patterns of fluids

  • Types of fluids ingested and whether they contain caffeine or alcohol.

  • The number of dry nights vs the number of wet nights

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

  • How your urine stream looks when going to the bathroom (strong and steady or weak and dribbling)

  • Stress and anxiety have undisputed impacts on not only bedwetting but also physical disability and mobility limitations. There is convincing evidence that depression and stress increase the risk for physical disability and, in turn, physical disability results in increased depressive symptoms, that’s why it’s important to know some tips to improve mobility for seniors.
Stress affects also the earlier stages of the functional limitation in mobility and can accelerate the transitioning along the pathway to disability.

Treatments for sleep enuresis

Lifestyle treatments

  • Set fluid intake limitations

  • Reduce or cut out caffeine and alcohol from the diet

  • Make urinating a routine. Set a schedule to make sure to urinate every one to two hours during the day

  • Void bladder before bedtime even when you don’t quite feel the need to go

  • Set a nighttime bathroom alarm to urinate in the middle of the night

  • Protect your bed with special mattress covers

  • Wear absorbent briefs during the night

Medical Treatments

In many cases controlling nocturnal urinary incontinence comes down to treating underlying medical conditions. However, there are some prescribed medications that have been shown to help.

  • Anticholinergic drugs to calm irritated bladder

  • Antibiotics to treat urinary tract infections

  • Desmopressin acetate increases levels of ADH to slow nighttime urine production

  • DHT-blocking medications to reduce prostate swelling

  • Bladder relaxants, like FDA-approved Myrbetriq (pricing)

Potential Skin Conditions

Unfortunately, bed-wetting can also cause other problems, like adverse skin conditions. These issues can be very uncomfortable, and if left treated, could continue to get worse.

The key to prevention is ensuring that the incontinence product being used is the right size and absorbency level. If it doesn’t fit well or can’t handle the leakage level, skin irritations can occur.

Another way to prevent incontinence-related skin conditions is to address the area quickly by keeping it clean and dry as much as possible.

Treating sleep apnea

Bed-wetting is often a symptom of sleep apnea in children, but bed-wetting in adults is much less common. However, there is a small number of adults (one study showed 7% of sleep apnea patients had secondary enuresis) that begin to experience sleep enuresis as their sleep apnea symptoms worsen. For these patients, symptoms of bed-wetting often resolve once continuous airway pressure therapy (CPAP) is introduced to treat sleep apnea.

For those living in Alaska and experiencing urinary incontinence that may be associated with worsening sleep apnea symptoms, contact the Alaska Sleep Clinic for a free 10-minute phone consultation with one of our sleep specialists to see if a sleep study may be right for you.

Why Do I Leak Urine When I Sleep?

If the bowels are exceptionally full, this can often place extra pressure on the bladder and cause bedwetting.

Around sunset each day, the body releases an antidiuretic hormone called arginine vasopressin which reduces the kidneys’ output so that we don’t usually need to go to the toilet during the night. We develop this hormone around the ages of 2 and 6, however, some people don’t ever begin creating this hormone, which can lead to severe bedwetting.

  • Excessive Liquid Consumption

It may be that the cause of your leaks is simply drinking too much liquid before bed. Caffeine and alcohol can be particularly irritating to your bladder, so it is important to cut down on these in the evening.

  • Stress and Psychological Issues

Surprisingly, stress, anxiety and other related conditions are known to cause bladder leakage. A distressing life event can often trigger leakages, particularly if you already have weak pelvic floor muscles.

What Can I Do to Stop Peeing at Nighttime?

Go Mad on the Pelvic Floor Exercises

If you haven’t heard of these already, pelvic floor exercises are the healthiest, most natural method to treating incontinence. They have been a success in helping people across the globe. Pelvic floor exercises work by making you more aware of your pelvic area and improving bladder control.

How to Practice Kegels

Before you begin to try any Kegel exercises, you need to identify your pelvic muscles. In order to do this, ensure your aware of the muscles you use to control urination. Try and stop yourself from urinating mid-flow. The muscles you use here are the correct ones.

You should then squeeze these for up to 4 seconds, then relax the muscles for 4 seconds. If your stomach and thigh muscles weaken when you do this, you are doing this method wrong.

Gradually increase the length of time you are able to squeeze until you see a noticeable improvement in the strength of your muscles.

In order for this method to be effective, it is recommended that you repeat this exercise 10 to 15 times per session.

If you lack the sufficient time to practice these at home, try and incorporate them into your daily routine. Do this exercise 3 times daily.

 Ask about Medication

In some cases, Doctors can prescribe you medication for incontinence. These medications work in different ways to decrease incontinence at night time, and your Doctor can decide which medication is the most suitable for your condition.

If you are suffering from Nocturnal Enuresis, particularly if it is something that has only recently started, it is important to see your doctor so they can find the exact cause and offer treatment options. You need to provide the Doctor with information about the severity and frequency of your condition so you are provided with the correct advice and medication.

Keep a Bladder Diary

A bladder diary helps you keep a track of what foods and liquids you consume and how this affects you. You can read about how to make a bladder diary here.

Watch Your Liquid Intake before Bed

If you suffer from Nocturnal Enuresis, it’s important to cut down on caffeine and alcohol in the evening. You should also ensure you only consume fluid up to 2 hours prior to bedtime. One tip is to make sure you visit the toilet right before bed. However, you do need to ensure you do not become dehydrated.

Create a Bed Wetting Alarm

Another way you can treat prevent incontinence at night time is through creating a bedwetting alarm. This is particularly useful if we struggle with waking up with waking up and recognising the need to urinate. A bedwetting alarm goes off at timed intervals, ensuring you will wake up and walk to the bathroom. You can also buy bedwetting alarms that monitor wetness and can wake you up as soon as you begin to urinate.

90,000 How is bedwetting in children treated? What parent

should know

The child is written in a dream. As long as he is small, this is normal. But the child is growing, and the bed is often wet in the morning. This is due to enuresis, the disease is unpleasant and delicate.

When faced with an illness, parents may not know how to respond or who to turn to for help. Therefore, in our article we will tell you what to do if your child is sick and how to treat bedwetting in children.

Translated from Greek, the term means “to urinate.”If during sleep, and in some cases, and wakefulness, a person cannot control urination, he is sick. In most cases, children (5-12 years old) are susceptible to enuresis, less often adolescents (13-18), and only from 1% of adults (from 18 years old).

The mature type of urination is formed by 3-5 years and depends on the rate of development of the central nervous system. If a child by this age has not learned to control the process of emptying the bladder, it is necessary to contact a specialist who will tell you how to treat enuresis in children.

Types of enuresis

Monosymptomatic. Disorder of the function of the bladder without any other symptoms. Divided into primary and secondary .

  • With primary enuresis , the child regularly has difficulties with urination control, during 6 months there are no “dry” periods.
  • With secondary enuresis , the symptoms of the disease appear again after a six-month break.

Polysymptomatic. The disease has several symptoms: delay in the onset of urination; sluggish, thin stream of urine; feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder.

Enuresis is also divided into daytime , if the child has involuntary urination while awake, and nighttime – manifests itself in the deep sleep phase.

Boys are susceptible to disease twice as often as girls due to the peculiarity of the structure of the genitals. Enuresis in children can be cured. This is not the worst ailment, but it affects the psychological state of the child. Therefore, a special approach and understanding is required from parents.

How should parents behave?

Children with bedwetting have a high level of anxiety, a sense of insecurity, difficulties in communication, increased conflict in family situations. Complexes can develop – hence isolation and aggression. Wisdom and delicacy are required from adults.

In no case should you scold and shame the child, show your anger, discuss the problem in public. Remember that the baby feels your psychological state, and he is already having a hard time.

Causes of enuresis

Only a doctor can establish the cause of the disease. They are individual for each child, they can be both physical and neurological. Some of them:

  • a conditioned reflex was not formed due to a lag in the development of the central nervous system;
  • 90,021 infections;

  • the genitourinary sphere is not developed;
  • stresses: divorce of parents, the appearance of a second child, quarrels in the family, separation from mom or dad;
  • heredity: if the parents had enuresis, the child has a high chance of manifesting the disease;
  • disrupted the production of the hormone vasopressin, which is responsible for the volume of urine produced.Under normal conditions, the level of this hormone rises at night, and less urine is produced. The opposite happens in children with enuresis.

How is bedwetting in children treated?

We advise you to start treating enuresis in children with tests. The doctor will send for an ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys, uroflowmetry to check the functionality of the organ, cystography.

It is possible to diagnose and outline a treatment plan for bedwetting during rest. For example, in the sanatorium-resort complex “Mashuk Aqua-Term”.We employ professional urologists and neuropathologists, we have the necessary equipment.

For drug treatment of enuresis in children, hormones, antidepressants and psychostimulants are prescribed.

How to treat bedwetting on your own?

Enter the day mode. Leave all activities for the morning and exclude activities that excite the nervous system before bedtime. Do not allow watching TV, sitting on your phone, or playing on your computer at night.

Limit fluid intake before bed and make sure your child goes to the bathroom.

After one and a half years do not wear diapers , it is better to lay an oilcloth.

A bedwetting alarm clock helps to treat bedwetting in children. With a special clip, the humidity sensor is attached to the underwear and as soon as a drop of urine falls on it, an alarm is triggered and the child wakes up.

Do physical therapy with your child, do exercises to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, back and abdomen.

Talk to your baby about the problem , motivate him, encourage him for each dry night.

It is not a problem to cure bedwetting in children. In most cases, with timely referral to specialists and following the recommendations, the disease goes away forever. The main task of parents is not to instill complexes and create a favorable psychological environment for the child in a difficult period.

Infant bedwetting: how to help your child

Nocturnal enuresis in children is common. And there can be many reasons for bedtime incontinence too. However, it often happens that parents underestimate the scale of the problem, unwittingly aggravating the situation and the fragile child’s psyche. In this article, we will tell you about the causes of incontinence in children, which should be paid close attention to.We will tell you what to do and how to help your child cope with nocturnal enuresis.

Why does the child piss at night

To begin with, you need to understand in which case infant incontinence becomes a problem or an alarm bell. In pediatrics, the age norm when a child should not urinate in bed at night is considered to be the age of 4-6 years. But for some reason, parents are so desperate to wean their child from a puddle in bed almost in a year or two. What is it fraught with?

The fact is that up to 1.5 years old, babies do not have a bladder and bowel control system. Therefore, attempts to potty train the baby at this time may be in vain, or they will form a wrong reflex in the child. When the sounds “ps-ps” and “planned landings” become a signal not to empty the bladder, but to fill the pot. And later, at 3, 4 or 5 years old. This system breaks down, and the child begins to write again at night in bed. Parents are surprised at this, and sometimes even indignant.

Therefore, parents should not make this mistake – to compete in the development of their baby among their peers, to rush physiological events that should proceed at a natural pace.In particular, to rush the “relationship” between the child and the potty.

The main causes of child incontinence

If a child of 4-6 years old regularly goes to the toilet during the day, but at night either wakes up in a puddle or sleeps without waking up wet, then you should pay attention and help your baby if necessary.

Wearing diapers

Often, parents are too lazy to get up at night or they are bored with constant washing and changing bed linen for a wet child. Therefore, they are in no hurry to remove the diapers from the child, hoping that everything will come by itself. Will not come. Diapers prevent the baby from learning the physical reactions of his body, do not allow to establish a logical connection in time: I am wet – I feel uncomfortable.

Such a connection begins to form in a baby after 1.5 years, and this can be noticed by paying attention to the child’s behavior. He becomes uncomfortable walking in wet sliders or panties and he demonstrates this in every possible way, gives a signal that he wants to go to the potty and distinguishes what it is to pee and poop. That is why it is important to wean a child from diapers at this age.

Kidney and bladder diseases

Another reason for the occurrence of infantile enuresis. Inflammatory processes are often accompanied by frequent urination. Infections and bacteria that attack the genitourinary system can also contribute to bedwetting. In girls, a disease such as cystitis occurs due to the structural features of the urinary tract (it is wider than in boys). Thus, girls experience discomfort and frequent urge to urinate, which may not even be controlled.

The kidneys are the organ for the distribution of “heat” in the body and in itself is a “heat-loving organ”. Then, when hypothermia of the body occurs or due to an inflammatory, infectious process, their function is disturbed, enuresis develops in children.

Pathology of the nervous system

There are many pathologies that can lead to problems with nighttime urination. This can be a delay in the development of urination centers in the brain, and the immaturity of the nervous system as a whole, and profundosomnia – a sleep disorder in which the child sleeps very soundly and cannot wake up on the “signal” of the nervous system to urinate.

In this case, you must definitely consult a specialist or doctor who will prescribe physiotherapy and select drug treatment.

Chronic stress and psychological trauma

A common cause of infantile enuresis.

The availability of modern gadgets, the availability of social networks and not always correct and useful children’s content, parental stress, the emotional environment in the family and kindergarten can provoke bedwetting.

Psychological stress, pressure and rigidity of upbringing lead to the fact that the child gets tired just like any adult. Children experience mood swings in the same way as adults, experience anger, apathy, joy, melancholy.Accept your child as your equal.

Chronic diseases

Severe illnesses such as diabetes or epilepsy can lead to enuresis. In the first case, due to excessive water intake. This can be noticed in the child’s behavior and undergo the necessary research. In the second case, urination may take place during night cramps, which the child may not remember in the morning.

How to wean a child from peeing in bed

To begin with, understand if there are serious reasons for concern and, in any case, consult a specialist. It is important not to make diagnoses and treatment “by eye”, but to identify the cause. The success of the treatment depends on this. This will require research, analysis and tests.

More often enuresis has neuropsychological roots. The simplest thing that parents can do in this case is to understand their child and pay attention to the situation within the family. Possibly nighttime urination is the child’s attempt to draw attention to himself. This phenomenon occurs in hyperactive children or children with attention deficit disorder.

Support from parents is very important in terms of suggestions, open conversations and psychological assistance to their baby, no matter what age he is.

How to help a child

  • Give the child sedatives, sedatives to reduce daytime activity and improve psycho-emotional state, remove
  • 90,021 stress and tension. Such preparations as motherwort tincture (necessarily diluted in drinking water according to the recommended dosage), tenoten for children, Magne B6, Edas-306 Passambra, Nervohel, Glycine are suitable.

  • Introduce a drinking regimen. Limit fluid intake during the day and stop drinking liquid food and water after 6 pm.
  • Organize the correct daily routine. The baby must go to bed no later than 21.00
  • Organize sleep hygiene. Mandatory reception of water procedures. It is good if it is a herbal bathroom. Obligatory absence of gadgets and TV an hour before bedtime. It is important to organize a quiet evening leisure immediately before bedtime, but an active evening – walks, outdoor games.
  • Try the night awakening method. Take your child to the toilet by the hour. In this case, it is very important not just to take the baby and put it on a potty or toilet to leave the bed dry. And it is important to wake up the child so that he does it consciously! Regular awakening, followed by a trip to the toilet, will quickly teach the child to do it on their own.
  • Try to devote more time to your child and be sure to monitor your emotional state.Children are sensitive to their parents like no other.
  • Be sure to pay attention to the child and reassure him if he wakes up dry. Here it is important to do this without fanaticism and not put the achievement on a pedestal.

What not to do for parents

  • Don’t lecture your child or shame him. Just understand that he is not doing it intentionally or on purpose. The kid may not even understand that he pee in bed.
  • Do not put guilt in it and do not scold for the spoiled sheet, for your nerves.Your nerves are your nerves and only you can spoil them. But without that, the existing feeling of guilt and shame can alienate the child from the parents, exacerbating internal complexes.
  • Apply penalties. For example, you won’t get it, or you won’t watch cartoons, or you won’t go for a walk, or you won’t get sweets because you made it to bed. This is how extremely negative attitudes and connections are formed in the child: to be good, I must do this or I am not good enough to be loved. It will be very harmful in the future. The child should feel unconditional love and support from adults.
  • Let it go. Despite the fact that for enuresis the age of 5-6 years is considered the norm, wave your hand in the hope that it will not go away by itself. Spending more time with your child, you will understand if he has complaints and physical discomfort, how often nighttime incidents occur and how the child behaves. You can’t panic, but you shouldn’t leave it “as it is” either. If you have any concerns about urinating at night, you should take action and seek professional help.
  • To deprive the child of childhood and load the crumbs with classes, circles and sections, creating pressure of adult responsibility on the fragile child’s psyche. Everything has its time. Constant stress, a strict daily regimen and a lack of time and opportunity to fully meet the child’s needs can provoke enuresis. So in pursuit of public opinion and standards, take care of your children, who once chose you!

When interpreting what dreams of urinating for, many dream books show similarities in opinion. They consider this dream to be evidence of self-development by getting rid of aggression and bad habits. However, one should not exclude the possibility of a psychosomatic origin of the plot for such a dream.

Why dream of urinating

To experience relief from the process

Urine symbolizes the demonic principle, which, in large congestion, turns into uncontrollable rage.By urinating, you get rid of all bad things and take the path of harmony with the world around you. This is a very good sign of prosperity and success.

Painful sensations

If you dream that you are experiencing difficulties or pain when you try to urinate, the opinions of dream books differ on this. Some argue that this is a good sign promising a new job assignment, others are sure that the dreamer has serious health problems and should immediately contact a specialist.

To urinate in public

The process of urinating is associated not only with the elimination of toxins. Many representatives of the flora thus mark their territory. The desire for dominance can be expressed in a dream in a similar behavior in a person.

If you dreamed that you were committing such an unseemly act at work, it means that you strive for a high position and want to get the best equipment. Peeing at home – to setbacks and difficulties.

The desire to humiliate a person can be expressed in a dream in the form of urination on the object of hatred. This is a warning about a serious conflict that may arise between you in reality.

Enuresis

If you happen to urinate in a dream and, as a result, find the same problem in reality, this may indicate the development of such an unpleasant disease as enuresis. It affects about 1% of adults. Most often, the problem is associated with constant stress and depression.

Is it dreaming that you wet yourself in a dream, but in reality everything is all right? This is a serious warning your brain is sending. The body is tired from work, it needs a good rest. You should postpone all business and go on vacation.

Where is this happening?

The place where you gather to relieve your natural need for sleep is also important. If this is a secluded corner, you can actually do something stupid. Peeing on the floor – to strengthen your financial position, and “go small” in the toilet – you will be invited on a romantic date.

Also interesting: what is dreaming about

The article on the topic: “a dream book to write urination in the toilet in a dream” provides up-to-date information on this issue for 2018.

Meanwhile, dream books almost unanimously assert that such a plot has a prophetic meaning and should not be forgotten. First, because the sleeper can predict future events with amazing accuracy. Secondly, in this way, he receives instructions: urgently to take care of his health, because dangerous changes are taking place in the body.

From the point of view of psychologists, sleep during urination can be associated with getting rid of the aggression accumulated in the sleeping person. He will cope with stress, fatigue, stop harassing himself with panic thoughts, and devote all his energy to self-development, study, comprehension of philosophical truths.

Goodbye, complexes!

In many dream books, urine symbolizes the fiery principle, the manifestation of the dark sides of the human soul. And if you sleep and feel the need to empty your overflowing bladder, then you are on the verge of a breakdown, a fit of rage.

But if you dream that you urinate with relief, then upon awakening you will understand how you managed to get rid of black thoughts, envy, anger.Such moral cleansing will help you to develop calmly, to do your job, not paying attention to others. And very soon the dreamer will realize that in reality everything is going extremely well for him. In addition, wonderful prospects will suddenly open before a kind, calm person.

Freud, a little differently explains the same vision. He is sure that by peeing in a dream, the character is freed from his oppressive complexes, becomes confident and free.

Difficulty urinating

Why dream of urinating with difficulty? According to the dream book, this is a sign that the sleeping person is unable to cope alone with problems and obstacles. He is, as they say, “one warrior in the field,” who has not yet managed to gather friends and associates.

If in a dream you do not leave the toilet, for a suspiciously long time, relieving a small need, then there will be other predictions in the dream books. The first option is this: it is possible that you will receive an offer to take another position. The second, alas, is not too optimistic, you need to see a urologist, as there are malfunctions in the genitourinary system.

Miller explains this dream differently. He believes that urine is a sign of dreamer fatigue. If the dreamed urine is cloudy, then the sleeping person can actually get seriously ill. And if she is with blood particles, but the disease will strike down one of the dreamer’s blood relatives.

Shameless situations

In Vanga’s dream book, a very sensible and original explanation is given to the dream of a small need. The Bulgarian seer believed that urinating does not just mean getting rid of something unnecessary. After all, this process allows males to mark territory. So, if in a dream someone is peeing, not paying attention to others in the wrong place, then this is a clear sign of a desire to dominate, rule, keep everything under control.

It is easy to understand that if you behave in such a strange and defiant way in the workplace, then in reality you are dreaming of a managerial position. But the dream that you poured a puddle in the presence of household members promises something completely different – you secretly want to take possession of someone else’s property. However, the dream book warns: this adventure will end in failure.

Even more cynical behavior – in a dream you urinate on a certain character. Does it really not even occur to you? But the dream book suspects that the person who appeared in the dream is terribly hateful to you and in reality, you subconsciously want to humiliate and offend her.Get rid of such attacks of anger, otherwise you risk making yourself a cruel, strong rival, enemy.

Did you feel uncomfortable because you dreamed that you wet yourself? Nothing seditious, on the contrary, it prophesies the earliest and successful embodiment of the conceived ideas.

Unfortunately, this is not the only interpretation of this plot. In a number of dream books, a bed wet with urine is a signal that the sleeping person is tormented by wine, anxiety. He, both in reality and in a dream, feels like a sinner, a criminal.Such an attitude can lead to severe psychological consequences and physical ailments. Urgently understand your inner world, or seek help from a specialist psychologist.

An attack of enuresis in a dream can also signal the dreamer’s extreme fatigue, he immediately needs to take a vacation.

Litter

It is important to remember: where did you actually write while you slept. If you urinated directly on the floor, then, oddly enough, you will get decent money. But when passing a small need secretly in another wrong place, you will think of something bad.Don’t be silly, stop. And then you will feel awkward.

To write in a bucket or pot in a dream means that in reality the sleeping person was in an extremely difficult situation, experiencing fear and horror. The same process on the toilet promises him a promotion. If he just ran into the toilet, with a desire to relieve himself, then the dream book does not exclude the fact that in the morning he will receive an invitation to a love date.

Interpretation of dreams from

90,000 🧬 First part. “A large number of cases of enuresis pass spontaneously”

Up to 15% of children over 5 years old suffer from enuresis. What is this problem, how to relate to it and what not to miss in the behavior and health of children? These and other questions of children’s health are answered by the neuro-urologist at GMS Clinic, Galina Evgenievna Tishchenko.

It should be understood that when we pronounce the term “enuresis” we mean periodic urinary incontinence during nocturnal sleep in children over 5 years old. Everything that concerns the age of up to 5 years, urination during a night’s sleep fits into the concept of the norm, and everything related to problems with urination, in addition to bedwetting, is no longer monosymptomatic enuresis. That is, there is a complex dysfunction of the lower urinary tract. If we are talking about monosymptomatic enuresis, when children have only urinary incontinence at night, then it occurs in 15% of children at the age of 5, and then this percentage decreases with the age of the child. At 6 years old -13%, at 7 years old – 10%. And by the age of 15, there will be 1% of children who have this diagnosis. For medical diagnosis, age 5 is the starting point.

Why am I paying attention to this? Sometimes parents complain of enuresis, and the child has a complex dysfunction of the pelvic organs, and the task of the specialist whom the parents turned to is to determine: does the child really have monosymptomatic enuresis or is there other dysfunction of the lower urinary tract, accompanied by urinary incontinence? In addition, there is still the concept of primary and secondary enuresis.

Primary enuresis is a situation when a child has not previously had a long period (more than 6 months) of dry nights. If there were dry nights for more than 6 months and then enuresis reappeared, then we are talking about secondary enuresis.

Who should pay attention to this?

Along with enuresis, there may be subtle disorders that should be identified by a pediatrician, neurologist, urologist, or a specialist who was initially asked for help.It is important to ask parents if there are other components of the pelvic dysfunction. Does the child have frequent urination (more than 8 times a day)? Or, on the contrary, too rare urge to urinate (less than 3 times a day)? Is there daytime incontinence? This is important when a child by the age of 6-7 can already control urination while awake.

Further. Is there a state of urgency? That is, when the urge to urinate occurs abruptly, without a preliminary light urge, which the child can postpone. And immediately there is a strong intolerable urge, which forces the child to urinate immediately. The doctor should ask how the child goes to the toilet during the day? Doesn’t he have to strain, groan, strain his stomach in order to start urinating? Does he have an intermittent stream of urine when the bladder is emptied in several portions. Whether there is a condition associated with discomfort, cutting, burning, pain, during or immediately after urination. Does the child have constipation or, on the contrary, fecal incontinence?

If signs of any additional dysfunction of the pelvic organs are detected, this condition is no longer just enuresis, but dysfunction of the lower urinary tract, which is accompanied by a component of urinary incontinence at night.

What more often do doctors have to deal with?

In 80% of cases, we meet with primary enuresis, and in 20% with complex enuresis, when there are other symptoms. Among complex cases, in about 15% of children, the problem will be combined with impaired bowel function, that is, urinary incontinence will be associated with constipation. And we say that in general we are dealing with a violation of the functions of the pelvic organs. The doctor must understand this.

It is very important not to miss a congenital anomaly when we are dealing with an incorrect laying of the nervous system and the spine, and not only with what lies on the surface.

Which child is more likely to have enuresis, and is there a genetic cause?

According to statistics, in boys, enuresis occurs 2 times more often than in girls. With regard to the characteristics of children or genetics, there are no obvious reasons and relationships. Some scientists have investigated sleep disorders, suggesting that children with enuresis sleep better than healthy children. We identified deeper sleep in some children, tried to trace the connection with the alternation of fast and slow sleep phases. Some researchers have found that urinary incontinence occurs during REM sleep, and then have other results. We examined in families a gene in chromosomes responsible for the transmission of primary enuresis, if there is a mutation of this gene, then the trait will be transmitted to children. In any case, even if there is no genetic predisposition, in 15% of cases, children after 5 years of age will have monosymptomatic enuresis.

There has been a lot of research on urodynamics during nighttime sleep, they are amazing.Scientists installed sensors in the bladder cavity and on the muscles of the perineum, and also filmed the activity of the brain. The wall of the bladder began to strain and, if another sensor simultaneously recorded a response increase in the activity of the muscles of the perineum, the child remained dry, and if the tone of the perineum did not increase, then there was no signal from the nervous system to hold and urine leaked. Science still cannot find a connection with a pose in a dream. The main thing is that the urge does not awaken one child, but awakens the other, all other things being equal. Why this is happening, we do not know. Additional evidence is required.

It turns out that urination in the body is very complicated?

Urination is one of the most complex acts. The muscles of the bladder, urethra, and perineal muscles must work very, very well. The muscles of the bladder during the accumulation of urine remain relaxed, and the sphincter and muscles of the perineum are in good shape, they are tight, and we are dry all day without thinking about it normally. Then the opposite process takes place, but only under our volitional control. Thus, regulation takes place. When the brain has made a decision to urinate, the storage phase changes to the urinary excretion phase. This is a complex process in the body. The muscles of the perineum relax, and only after that the signal is sent to the contraction of the bladder wall. Urine is discharged. This is the so-called mature type of urination. When a child cannot, by an effort of will, retain urine when urging, then his nervous system is not yet mature. And up to 5 years old, there is no point in expecting complete control of urination, including at night. The regulatory mechanisms of the body have not yet matured. When a child is already learning to control the function of the intestines, and he does not have incidents with the release of feces, then, often, in the interval from a month to a year, complete control over the function of urination will develop. And this means that a mature type of urination has been formed. The child will have longer intervals between urges, the capacity of the bladder will increase, and the functions of the perineal muscles that hold urine will be coordinated. The pressure inside the bladder will remain low despite the incoming urine from the kidneys, and the child will completely control his urination. When the urge to urinate can awaken the child at night, it means that the child already has a mature type of urination. It is believed that enuresis is caused by late maturation of all regulatory mechanisms of the nervous system.

That is, the nervous system of the child who is peeing at night has not yet matured?

Absolutely right! Children under the age of 14 may still have an immature type of urination according to our neuro-urological concepts.
