Understanding Styes: Causes, Symptoms, and Risk Factors
A stye, medically known as a hordeolum, is a painful infection that occurs in the oil glands of the eyelids. This condition results in a red, swollen lump on the eyelid that can fill with fluid and eventually come to a head. Styes are primarily caused by bacterial infections, with Staphylococcus being responsible for 90-95% of cases.
Several factors contribute to the development of styes:
- Blockage of oil glands due to dirt, debris, or makeup
- Poor hygiene
- Blepharitis (inflammation of eyelash follicles)
- Stress
- Hormonal changes
Common symptoms of a stye include:
- Swelling and pain in the affected area
- Soreness and burning sensation
- Irritation and difficulty blinking
- Sensitivity to light
- Pus discharge from the affected eye
While styes often heal on their own within one to two weeks, various natural remedies can help alleviate discomfort and accelerate the healing process.
Olive Oil: A Natural Antiseptic for Stye Relief
Olive oil is a versatile remedy for styes due to its high vitamin E content and natural antiseptic properties. How does olive oil help in treating a stye. - Soak a clean muslin cloth in warm (not hot) water
- Gently wring out excess water
- Place the warm cloth over the affected eye
- Leave it in place until the cloth cools
- Repeat this process every 30 minutes
For enhanced effectiveness, you can add a pinch of salt to the warm water before soaking the cloth. This can help draw out any pus and reduce swelling more quickly.

- Leave it in place for about 15 minutes
- Allow the witch hazel to air dry on the skin for continued healing
Repeat this process several times a day for best results. Witch hazel is readily available at most drug stores and herbal shops.

Preventing Styes: Essential Hygiene Practices
While treating styes is important, prevention is always better than cure. Implementing good eye hygiene practices can significantly reduce your risk of developing styes. What are some effective ways to prevent styes from occurring. Here are some essential tips:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your eyes or face

- Clean your eyelids regularly with a mild, tear-free baby shampoo
- If you wear contact lenses, follow proper hygiene and replacement schedules
By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing styes and maintain overall eye health.
When to Seek Professional Medical Help for a Stye
While most styes can be treated effectively at home, there are instances where professional medical attention may be necessary. When should you consult a doctor for a stye. Consider seeking medical help if:
- The stye persists for more than two weeks despite home treatment
- You experience severe pain or vision changes
- The stye spreads to other parts of your face
- You develop a fever or other systemic symptoms
- You have recurring styes
A healthcare professional can provide additional treatment options, such as prescription antibiotics or, in rare cases, surgical drainage of the stye.
Understanding the Difference Between Styes and Chalazia
It’s important to differentiate between styes and chalazia, as they are often confused due to their similar appearance. How do styes differ from chalazia. Styes are acute infections of the oil glands, while chalazia are chronic, non-infectious blockages of these glands. Chalazia tend to be less painful and may persist longer than styes. While many of the home remedies mentioned can help with both conditions, persistent chalazia may require different medical interventions.
The Impact of Diet on Stye Prevention and Treatment
While not directly related to stye formation, maintaining a healthy diet can support overall eye health and potentially reduce the risk of developing styes. Can certain foods help prevent or treat styes. Consider incorporating the following nutrients into your diet:
- Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts) for their anti-inflammatory properties
- Vitamin A (found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach) for maintaining healthy skin and mucous membranes
- Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, berries, and bell peppers) for its immune-boosting effects
- Zinc (found in oysters, beef, and pumpkin seeds) for its role in wound healing and immune function
While these dietary changes won’t directly cure a stye, they can contribute to overall eye health and potentially reduce the frequency of eye infections.
The Role of Stress Management in Stye Prevention
Stress has been identified as a potential contributing factor to the development of styes. How does stress management relate to stye prevention. High stress levels can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections, including those that cause styes. - Practice regular meditation or mindfulness exercises
- Engage in regular physical activity
- Ensure you’re getting adequate sleep
- Consider yoga or other relaxation techniques
- Maintain a balanced work-life schedule
By managing stress effectively, you may be able to reduce your susceptibility to styes and other stress-related health issues.

- Be careful not to get the oil directly in your eye
- Leave on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse gently with warm water
Always perform a patch test before using tea tree oil and discontinue use if you experience any irritation. If you’re unsure about using tea tree oil, consult with a healthcare professional first.
The Importance of Proper Contact Lens Care in Stye Prevention
For those who wear contact lenses, proper lens care is crucial in preventing styes and other eye infections. What are the essential steps for maintaining contact lens hygiene to prevent styes. Follow these guidelines to minimize your risk:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before handling contact lenses

What Causes an Eye Stye?

When you have a bump on your skin, it’s easy to assume it’s a pimple. But it’s a little more confusing when it’s close to your eye. Seriously… what is that?
If the bump is on or near your lash line, you’re likely dealing with an eyelid infection that’s known as a stye. It’s easy to see how you could confuse it with a zit, though. Just like pimples, “styes are usually painful, irritating, and red,” says Gary Goldenberg, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
And, while they show up on or near your eyelid, they don’t usually cause vision problems, he says—they just feel terrible. This angry bump is more common that you’d think, but it doesn’t make dealing with one any less uncomfortable. Here, dermatologists explain why eye styes pop up and what you can do to find relief fast. Plus, how to lower your odds of dealing with one in the future.
What is a stye, exactly?
leventalbasGetty Images
Styes are “very similar to infected pimples or ingrown hairs, they just occur on the eyelid,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Like the rest of your skin, your eyelids have oil glands, and when one of those oil glands becomes infected (usually by the bacterium staphylococcus), a red, angry bump that is tender to the touch can appear, says Dr. Zeichner.
For the record, styes usually aren’t contagious, although “technically, the bacteria causing the stye can be spread through direct contact,” he adds.
What causes a stye?
While it’s possible to get a stye and have no clue why it happened, Dr. Goldenberg says it’s usually caused by less-than-ideal hygiene, including the following:
- Touching your eyes without washing your hands first
- Putting in your contact lenses without washing your hands first
- Putting in your contact lenses without thoroughly disinfecting them first
- Leaving on your eye makeup overnight while you sleep
- Using old eye makeup, such as eyeliner and mascara
Also, if you struggle with a condition like blepharitis (chronic eyelid inflammation) or rosacea (a skin condition that causes persistent redness), you’re at an increased risk of developing styes on your eyes, says Dr. Goldenberg.
How to get rid of a stye
It’s tempting to want to pop a stye like a zit, but this is the last thing you should think about doing. Keep your hands off of it! “Popping it can spread infection,” Dr. Goldenberg explains.
Instead, take the following steps to help reduce swelling and relieve pain until the stye clears on its own:
- If you use contacts, wear your glasses until the stye clears
- Use a mild cleanser, like baby shampoo, to keep your eyelids clean
- Apply a warm compress to the bump several times a day for a few minutes at a time to help it open up
Styes usually go away on their own within a few days, Dr. Zeichner says, so if you notice it’s been 48 hours and you’re still struggling or it doesn’t seem to be getting better, it’s time to call a doctor. In some cases, you may need treatment with antibiotics to help it go away. If the stye is particularly stubborn, your doctor may even need to make a small incision in the bump to drain the pus. Again, do not try this yourself.
How to prevent a stye on your eye
Styes aren’t fun to deal with, but there are a few things you can do to lower the odds of developing one.
Practice good hand hygiene
Wash your hands well and often—and keep them away from your eyes as much as possible, says Dr. Goldenberg. You should also wash your hands well before you handle your contacts and do your best to keep your lenses clean before you put them in your eyes.
Keep your eyelids clean
You’ll want to make sure you thoroughly remove any eye makeup before you head to bed. It’s also a good idea to throw out old makeup. Simply check the packaging, which should be labeled with how long the product is good for after it’s been opened.
Apply warm compresses
If you’ve had a stye in the past, keeping up with those warm compresses on your lids could lower the odds that you’ll develop one again in the future, Dr. Goldenberg says.
The bottom line: If you are unlucky enough to develop a stye, don’t panic. Most go away on their own within a few days. But, if at-home treatments aren’t helping or your stye seems to be getting worse, don’t hesitate to call your doctor to prevent the spread of infection.

15 Wonderful Uses for Witch Hazel
Wise Bread Picks
I discovered witch hazel in college. I was not exactly the owner of the clearest skin in Britain, and dabbing a little witch hazel extract on my blemished skin stopped me enduring a mountain of abuse. But there are way more uses for this shrub than clearing up spotty skin. (See also: 5 Best Acne Treatments)
To get slightly technical for a moment, witch hazel is (according to Wikipedia):
…an astringent produced from the leaves and bark of the North American Witch Hazel shrub (Hamamelis virginiana), which grows naturally from Nova Scotia west to Ontario, Canada and south to Florida, and Texas in the United States. This plant was widely used for medicinal purposes by American Indians. The witch hazel extract was obtained by steaming the twigs of the shrub.
The essential oil of witch hazel is not sold separately as a consumer product. The plant does not produce enough essential oil to make production viable, however, there are various distillates of witch hazel (called hydrosols or hydrolats) that are gentler than the “drug store” witch hazel and contain alcohol.
Witch hazel is mainly used externally on sores, bruises, and swelling. The main constituents of the extract include tannin, gallic acid, catechins, proanthocyanins, flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin), essential oil (carvacrol, eugenol, hexenol), choline, saponins, and bitters. Distilled witch hazel sold in drug stores and pharmacies typically contains no tannin.”
Most drug stores and online pharmacies carry witch hazel in one form or another. My favorite is the handy Witch Stick. But when you get your hands on the mightily useful little medicinal marvel, what can you do with it? Here’s a rundown. It’s very useful, so put it on the top of your next shopping list.
15 Uses for Witch Hazel
1. The big one: Spot and blemish control
Witch hazel can reduce the inflammation on a pimple. Some people claim daily use helps with acne, and witch hazel can be found in many over-the-counter treatments. Application with a Witch Stick is the most convenient, but you can dab it on with a cotton ball. Ask your pharmacist before you do this, though. (See also: Natural Ways to Fight Acne)
2. Soothe and heal diaper rash
If your baby’s rash isn’t healing quick enough, apply witch hazel solution (Dickinson’s is good) with a cotton ball and you should see immediate improvement to your baby’s bottom.
3. Shrink bags under the eyes
Some people say that the application of hemorrhoid cream to those little baggies under your eyes can take them away. It’s not an old wives’ tale. One of the magic ingredients in a product like Preparation H is witch hazel, which helps tighten up the skin and reduce the bagginess. And that leads nicely to…
4. Soothe and reduce external hemorrhoids
Not only does witch hazel tighten skin, it’s also a good anti-itch remedy. By combining witch hazel with aloe, glycerine or petroleum jelly and rub it on external hemorrhoids, you will reduce itching significantly and dry up most bleeding.
5. Varicose vein relief
Soak wash cloths in witch hazel and lay on legs, which are propped straight out, to reduce pain and swelling from varicose veins. The witch hazel helps to tighten the veins, relieving the discomfort temporarily.
6. Soothe poison ivy and poison oak
Just like acne and blemishes, the witch hazel reduces itching and relieves swelling. Something definitely worth packing on your next camping trip.
7. Treat chicken pox blisters
A combination of aloe, honey, lavender and other essential oils create a spray that will vastly reduce the discomfort of chicken pox blisters. And it’s all-natural. Here’s what to do:
Mix together 1 tablespoon honey, 40 drops lavender essential oil, 15 drops lemon essential oil, 15 drops bergamot essential oil, 5 drops peppermint essential oil, 1 teaspoon carrot seed oil and 1/2 cup aloe vera gel.
Once completely mixed, and 1/2 cup distilled witch hazel and mix again. Pour mixture into spray bottle and use on affected areas (avoiding eyes). A more potent and less unsightly way to treat the chicken pox than traditional calamine lotion.
8. Heal your bruises faster
Been in a fight recently? Well, maybe not. But if you bang your leg or arm and are left with a nasty bruise, a thrice-daily dab of witch hazel can help speed up the healing time of the bruise.
9. Soothe razor burn (and in some instances, prevent it)
The anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel stop itchy bumps from forming up around your irritated hair follicles. Apply before or after shaving; it should certainly have an impact on your itchy red skin (and that includes ladies, too).
10. Treat and soothe a nasty sunburn
Healing damaged skin is one of witch hazel’s specialties. But as sunburn is also a type of skin inflammation, witch hazel is ideal for treating this too (despite swelling not being obvious). Treating sunburn with witch hazel will lessen healing time and prevent the infamous skin peeling and flaking.
11. Treat dry skin
By applying witch hazel immediately after showering, you are locking in the moisture that has just soaked into your skin.
12. Use to heal and soothe various cuts and bruises
Many chemists and pharmacists refer to witch hazel as nature’s answer to Neosporin. Applying a dab of it will cleanse the cut, protects against infection, and encourage quicker healing of minor skin breaks.
13. Take the bite out of bug bites
With its anti-itch and anti-inflammatory properties, witch hazel is ideal for treating bug bites. Just dab a little on the affected area.
14. Refresh tired eyes
NOT by squirting witch hazel in them, but by soaking a clean rag in witch hazel and cold water and placing the cold compress over your closed eyes. After 10 minutes, your eyes should be refreshed, and any redness should be gone. If you’ve been doing a lot of crying, this can get you back to normal quickly.
15. Make your own deodorant
Witch hazel is often used in deodorants due to its natural skin-healing and skin-care properties. Here is a home-made recipe you may want to try.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp high proof vodka
- 10 drops geranium
- 10 drops cypress
- 8 drops bergamot
- 5 drops neroli
- 4 drops lavender
- 3 drops black pepper
- 4 tb sp (40 ml) witch hazel
- 2 tb sp (25 ml) cornflower water
- 2 tb sp (25 ml) orange flower water
- Measure the vodka into a 4 oz (100 ml) glass bottle with a spray attachment.
- Carefully add the essential oils, one by one.
- Shake vigorously to dissolve the essential oils.
- Pour the witch hazel into the bottle, using a funnel if necessary, followed by the two flower waters. Shake well.
- Label the bottle and the deodorant is now ready to use.
- Before you use the deodorant each time, give the bottle a good shake to ensure the essential oils are fully dispersed.
Note
As with many herbal remedies, certain people, like women who are pregnant or breast feeding, should talk to their physician before using witch hazel. When using witch hazel, let your doctor know if you experience leg swelling, breathing problems, chest tightness or pain, hives, new rashes or irritations, nausea, upset stomach, vomiting or constipation. Most people who use witch hazel will not experience these adverse side effects, but some will, so notify a health official if any problems are noticed.

10 home remedies for styes
Home
Conditions
Styes » Home remedies
By Anna Barden; reviewed by Sonia Kelley, OD, MS
When bacteria causes a stye — a painful, pimple-like bump — to form on your eyelid, it can be hard to ignore. While styes typically heal on their own, they can be treated at home to help speed up the healing process and prevent further infection.
To minimize how long your stye lasts, here are 10 stye home remedies you can try:
1. Stop wearing contact lenses
One of the first key steps in stye treatment is removing possible irritants in the eye area. Contact lenses and contact solutions can cause further irritation or dryness in the eyes, increasing discomfort and postponing the healing time.
Wear eyeglasses instead of contacts until the stye has healed to give the area room to breathe and avoid spreading bacteria. Once the stye has cleared, be sure to wear a fresh pair of contact lenses to avoid reinfection.
2. Clean the area (and keep it clean)
The area around the stye needs to be kept clean in order to heal properly. It is important to clean the area with products that are safe and mild enough to use in the eye area, such as:
Mild, hypoallergenic soap
Tear-free baby wash or shampoo
Saline solution
Gently scrub the area around the stye with a clean finger, a clean washcloth or a fresh cotton swab as needed.
3. Pause your makeup routine
Avoiding cosmetics around the site of a stye can help avoid further irritation and prevent the spread of bacteria from makeup brushes and tools. Once the stye has healed, use clean or new brushes and products to resume your makeup routine.
With or without a stye, eyes are sensitive and should be cared for appropriately. To use makeup safely around your eyes, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the following:
Do not share your mascara, eyeliner or makeup brushes.
Wash your hands before applying makeup.
Wash or replace brushes and other tools regularly.
Throw out makeup that is defective or expired.
4. Use a warm compress
A warm compress can help relieve pain and irritation caused by a stye, as well as encourage a stye to drain on its own.
To use, dampen a clean washcloth with warm water and place it over the affected area for up to 10 minutes. The warmth will help bring the pus to the surface of the stye and dissolve oil inside the stye.
Note: Only use warm water, as water that is too hot can damage the skin and cause discomfort. Use a clean washcloth each time and never try to pop a stye.
5. Try warm tea bags
Like a warm compress, a warm tea bag can help reduce swelling around the affected area of the stye.
To use, steep a bag of tea in boiling water for a few minutes and then remove. Let the tea bag cool until it is comfortable against your skin, then place over the affected area for up to 10 minutes.
Use this technique on one or both eyes, but be sure to use a separate tea bag for each. It has been suggested that black tea is one of the most effective varieties of tea to use because of its antibacterial properties. However, there is no medical evidence that a tea bag is more effective than a clean washcloth.
6. Avoid popping, squeezing or picking at a stye
Squeezing, picking at or popping a stye can lead to further irritation and infection, which prolongs the healing process. If a stye is overwhelmingly irritating or interfering with your vision, it may be a good idea to see a doctor for professional treatment.
7. Apply light pressure
While it’s important not to pop or squeeze a stye, but applying light pressure around the area can help encourage the stye to drain on its own. Using clean hands, gently massage the area around the stye. If you feel any discomfort, stop immediately.
If there’s any drainage from the stye, use a clean washcloth to gently clean the area with mild soap and water.
8. Apply ointment
An over-the-counter ointment designed for treating the eye area can help provide relief from a stye and promote faster healing. Using a clean finger or a cotton swab, apply a small amount of ointment on the eyelid of the affected eye.
When choosing an ointment, be sure to choose one that is safe for eyes and avoid any products with steroids or whitening agents. Can eye drops be used to treat a stye? Dryness or irritation that occurs after a stye has healed may be relieved with eye drops, but a topical ointment is more suitable for relieving discomfort caused by the stye itself.
9. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever
In addition to over-the-counter ointments, an OTC pain reliever can help improve the inflammation and irritation caused by a stye. Ibuprofen will reduce both inflammation and pain because it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drug. Either acetaminophen or ibuprofen may provide relief, especially when used in conjunction with the home remedies for styes above.
10. Seek medical treatment
If various stye remedies have not provided relief or if the condition worsens, schedule an appointment with an eye doctor. Styes can become infected and may require prescription-strength medication, including a steroid shot. If the condition is serious enough, your doctor may need to drain the stye.

The Spohrs Are Multiplying Tumors And Styes And Things Not So Nice
Whenever I don’t want to let my mind wander off on dark paths, I keep myself busy. With Jackie!’s surgery yesterday, I knew I would have to have a day jammed with activities. I planned on really throwing myself into getting things ready for Annabel’s birthday party, but then I woke up with an insane-looking eye.
Backing up a bit, the day after my dental work, I woke up with a somewhat-swollen eyelid. It was the same side I’d had my work on and my cheek was a bit swollen as well, so I figured it was all related. I took a picture for posterity:
focus on the inner beauty in this picture
The next day it was mostly gone, so I figured I was right. Then this last weekend, I came down with another really bad cold. Sore throat, cough, the works. We all have it. Anyway, when I woke up yesterday, my eye looked like this:
I would call that DECIDEDLY WORSE. So off to Dr. Looove I went.
During my exam, she felt my eylid, pressed on it, and then flipped it inside out so she could look at its eyelid innards. Gag. She diagnosed it as a large stye. Basically, my eyelid grew a tumor out of solidarity to Jackie!. I think that shows true friendship, and also proves that I love Jackie! too much. First plan of attack – antibiotics, with hot compresses and washing my eye with Annie’s baby shampoo to make sure it’s clean. If the first plan doesn’t help by the end of the week, I need to have it CUT OUT.
That’s a scalpel near my eyeball for those of you who don’t watch medical dramas. Nothing compared to getting a mass cut out of your brain, but definitely high on the Disgusting Chart.
After I left Dr. Looove’s office, I went to the party store, where all the little kids looked at me like I was Igor or something (what hump?) while I walked the aisles. Plus Annie yelled “DADA! GO!” the entire time, so my self esteem was suuuuuper high.
When I could no longer take showing my hideousness to the outside world, I went home and started obsessively checking my phone and email for updates on Jackie!. Luckily, her sister Jenni did an awesome job of keeping us all up to date.
Jackie!’s four hour surgery went well – the doctors got what they saw on the MRI, which is good news. No word yet on if what was removed is scar tissue or new tumor growth. We have to wait for the biopsy results, and that can sometimes take a few days. Jackie! herself came out of the surgery very well. She’s obviously got a killer headache, but she sang our school’s fight song and I’m sure she was pleased to find out that the surgeon didn’t shave her whole head – just the portion along where the incision was made. Knowing Jackie!, she will have some excellent headbands covering up that strip in no time.
Thank you to EVERYONE for your messages and well-wishes. I know Jackie! and her family will be reading them all in the days to come.
And don’t you worry your pretty tiger heads, I’ll keep you posted on my eye. I think the stye needs a name.

Tip: Puffy Eyes?
If you have trouble with tired or puffy eyes from allergies, fatigue, or strain, one of the most soothing things to do to help them is to make yourself a cup of tea and save the tea bag. Chill the bag and then put the tea bag on your eyes. It takes the puffiness out and makes them feel much better!

I put a dab of witch hazel beneath my eye cream in the AM & that helps reduce puffiness. Also use cold tea bag compresses to reduce bad swelling due to allergies when nothing else works. Could apply very cold water or ice cubes to help. Just read about using cold milk – because it has lactic acid in it! Press your eye area carefully, & try to distribute any fat deposits – use your middle finger, as it is the weakest & don’t rub your eyes!
(P.S. check to see if you have any allergies that might be causing the swelling – ) I like the new L’Oreal double-ended eye cream stick, with one tube for day & one for night – You have to use eye cream!Cyinda

This will work:
1) Take 2 used cold tea bags & place them over each eye for 10 minutes each morning.
The Tannic Acid & the caffeine in the Tea reduces the swelling along with the cold. Just make a cup of tea then put the tea-bags in the fridge for use the next morning.

2) Many Professional Models use REAL (not from the dollar store) Preparation-H under their eyes to take away bags & swelling (like with hemorrhoids).
This works because of the chemical made to reduce the swelling in the hemorrhoids. (Don’t laugh, it WORKS!)
Prep H is a vasoconstrictor and it should work immediately. If it doesn’t work for you within 5 minutes after applying, it probably won’t. But it smells terrible! You have to let it set for 10 minutes before applying your make-up.

I know this sounds yucky, but preparation H works!

A doctor on Doctor Oz talked about this a few days ago. He said in some cases it may be an allergy. He said try taking an over-the-counter antihestimine right before you go to bed.
See if that works. I know if I sleep really hard I’ll wake up very puffy for some reason. I also heard don’t sleep on your stomach with face down.(Guest)

Unless the Preparation H is manufactured in Canada it is not recommended to use around your eyes! I can’t remember the ingredient offhand but there’s an ingredient in it that is not safe for any portion of the body other than what it’s meant for. Canada does not use that ingredient.
Another thing that might be causing the puffiness is not drinking enough plain old simple water during the day. I know when I have my daily 8 I have no puffiness or bloating in any part of my body but within a day or two of not drinking it as I should the puff and bloat is back 🙁 If you currently don’t drink your 8 and decide to try it just know it takes a few days for the water to help expel all body toxins and show results 🙂

It’s long been said put some hemorrhoid medicine on your eyes and it shrinks the swelled tissue.

Does anyone have a magic cure for puffy eyes from crying? Mine are extremely puffy right now to the point where I can’t go to work due to embarrassment.

I get the same thing if I’ve been crying. Sometimes ice does the trick; so does laying with wet teabags on them for a while. (I think it is the tannic acid in them.) If people ask, I used to be able to sell them “we were using the grill last night; and used lighter fluid, and I got the smoke in my eyes. I must be allergic to it!”
Hope whatever is making your heart heavy works out!
February 17, 20110 found this helpful
Marge, I am so sorry for whatever is causing your tears but a cold compress always helps. Ice, cold wet teabags, cool cucumber slices, or even a cool wet cloth will help reduce the puffiness of crying eyes.
I have tons of legitimate allergies and and am often critical of those who claim anything odd as an “allergy”. But if something has made you feel so sad, I’m for anything that will help you feel better and get you through the next day without embarrassment.
If the tears keep coming, please find a friend, pastor or doctor that can help you find smiles again. Take care. Okay?

Mine do the same thing. I am a mess when I cry. I am sorry something has made you so sad but I never found anything that would help. Sometimes a white lie will help. Make up a nonexistant friend who has just passed away in another state and go on to work.
Take tissues with you. She was too young to die and you had so many good times together. You need to keep private things private until you come to grips. I hope there is someone you can turn to when it is safe to cry again.

I hope what ever got you down there is something to bring you back up. But Ice works if you use a damp wash cloth with it so you do not damage your skin. And to let you know we have all been there I try to take deep breaths and call someone who cares.

You have to wash the salt that comes from the tears, away from the eyes and skin. You get better results washing with warm water rather than cold water. Then you could try slices of raw potato on the skin. If you have got any gel type skin treatments, they might help.
Just say that you have an allergy or an eye infection and wear sunglasses to work. Say that the light makes your eyes hurt.
I’m an expert on this subject. This time of year, as the daffodils are coming out, I can just cry over absolutely nothing for hours. I keep thinking about sad stories, and I mean fictional stories, and start crying all over again. I am being silly and illogical! I don’t know why this happens but perhaps you have something similar.

Use preparation H for hemorrhoids. It causes the skin to tighten up and lasts for hours and there is no smell.

Try using olive oil nightly before going to bed. Rub just a drop or two around your eye and pat dry any excess oil. You’ll notice a difference in about a week with regular use once a day.
For puffy eyes:
You can also try using black tea bags that have been soaked in cold water for a moment, then lay down with the tea bags on your eyes for about 15 minutes. The caffeine will help stimulate the puffiness and cause the skin to restrict.
Cucumbers would work too in place of tea bags.
Once you get a steady routine down, it should reduce the visibility.

If the swelling is allergy or sensitivity-related, I have found that the best remedy is cold black tea compresses (or you can use the teabags themselves)- especially for the eyes. If it is a contact allergy (usually from your hands to your facial area), around your nose you can apply cortisone cream. Again, cold tea is good for eyes – but antihistamines taken internally will help for allergy eyes (I take generic Claritin, then Zyrtec & if all fails – go to Benadryl – which does make you drowsy.) I have also found that applying stye ointment inside your eyelids can ease irritation – also try allergy eye drops – & wash out your eyes with regular Murine or Simulsan allergy drops, which can be used often. If you work around irritants, wear glasses, even if you don’t need them to SEE. (I wore clear ones when I used to demonstrate perfumes.)
I also apply petroleum jelly regularly to my eyelids to both lubricate & protect them & use eye cream beneath the eye. In the AM, a dab of witch hazel beneath your eye cream will help reduce swelling.
You have to be quite a detective when you get allergy irritation, identify the irritant & eliminate it, if at all possible & then, around the eye area proceed very gently & cautiously. (Oh, I have also used healthfood store calendula gel for irritations on my eyelids.)
You didn’t state the origin of the swelling. Hope this helps.

The absolute best thing is tea bags. Brew yourself a cup of regular tea (like Lipton) then save the used tea bags & keep them in a cup in the fridge. After they’re cold you relax & lay back & put the tea bags on your swollen areas (eyes & nose). It’s the tannic acid in the tea bags that reduces the swelling, & the cold helps shrink the blood vessels to also help. I read about this trick over & over in my daughters fashion magazines. The fashion models swear by it! Cold cucumber slices also work. As does preparation H (the hemorrhoid cream) It has to be the brand name, not the one sold at the dollar store. At least that’s what the models are quoted saying they can’t live without for puffy & swollen eyes!

Herbal Remedies for Stye, Natural Treatment, Ayurvedic Medicines
Overview
Eyes enable you to see each and every creation of the God. These beautiful eyes express your inner world.
An eye has eyeball and two eyelids. Three types of glands are present in eyelids.
- Sweat glands at the margin of eyelids called Glands of Moll
- Sebaceous glands called as glands of Zei’s
- Sebaceous glands in deeper layer are called as Meibomian glands
Sweat glands and sebaceous glands are superficial and prone to infection. The blockage of duct due to staphylococcus infection results in swelling of the glands in eye lids called stye (hordeolum). A person with low immunity and poor hygiene gets the attacks of bacteria frequently and the stye (Hordeolum) often repeats and develops tendencies.
Symptoms of Stye
A red painful edematous swelling on the edge of eyelid is seen, which lasts for a week or two. Usually a small one grows slowly and becomes hard and ends as an eruption. White or yellow tip at the top of it becomes visible and evacuates the pus, results in healing. The pus point appears mostly along the edge of the eyelid. Watery secretions come out of the eyes due to irritation. Blurred vision is there for a short duration. Stye never damages the eye.
