Images of a broken finger. Comprehensive Guide to Broken Finger Symptoms, Treatment, and Recovery
How do you recognize the symptoms of a broken finger. What are the most effective treatments for hand fractures. When is surgery necessary for a broken hand. How long does it take to recover from a broken finger.
Understanding Hand Anatomy and Common Fractures
The human hand is a complex structure, consisting of 27 bones and 28 muscles. This intricate design allows for remarkable dexterity but also makes the hand susceptible to various injuries, particularly fractures. To comprehend the nature of hand fractures, it’s crucial to understand the basic anatomy of the hand.
Key Components of Hand Anatomy
- Carpal bones: 8 small bones in the wrist
- Metacarpal bones: 5 bones in the palm
- Phalanges: 3 bones in each finger, 2 in the thumb
Hand fractures can occur in any of these bones, but some types are more common than others. For instance, a Boxer’s Fracture, which affects the neck of the fifth metacarpal (controlling the pinky), is frequently seen in sports-related injuries or when a closed fist strikes a hard object.
Prevalence of Hand Fractures
Hand injuries, including fractures, are surprisingly common. According to recent estimates published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, approximately 25% of all sports injuries involve the hands or wrists. This high incidence rate underscores the importance of understanding the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for hand fractures.
Recognizing Broken Finger Symptoms
Identifying a broken finger can be challenging, as symptoms may vary depending on the location and severity of the fracture. However, there are several common signs to watch for:
- Pain, especially when attempting to move the finger
- Swelling around the affected area
- Bruising or discoloration
- Decreased range of motion
- Sensitivity to touch
- Visible deformity or misalignment
It’s important to note that the ability to move a finger doesn’t necessarily rule out a fracture. Some individuals may still be able to use the affected digit with minimal discomfort, even in the presence of a break.
Can you have a broken finger without knowing it?
Yes, it’s possible to have a minor fracture without immediately recognizing it. Some fractures, particularly hairline fractures, may not cause severe pain or obvious deformity. However, persistent discomfort, swelling, or bruising should always be evaluated by a medical professional to rule out a fracture.
Diagnostic Procedures for Hand Fractures
Accurate diagnosis of a hand fracture is crucial for determining the appropriate treatment plan. Healthcare providers typically use a combination of physical examination and imaging techniques to assess the injury.
Physical Examination
During a physical exam, the doctor will carefully inspect the affected area, looking for visible signs of injury such as swelling, bruising, or deformity. They will also gently palpate the hand to identify areas of tenderness and assess the range of motion in the affected fingers.
Imaging Techniques
- X-rays: The most common imaging method for diagnosing hand fractures
- CT scans: Provides detailed cross-sectional images, useful for complex fractures
- MRI: May be used to detect subtle fractures or associated soft tissue injuries
How accurate are X-rays in diagnosing hand fractures?
X-rays are highly effective in diagnosing most hand fractures, with an accuracy rate of around 85-90%. However, some hairline fractures or injuries to small bones like the scaphoid may be missed on initial X-rays. In these cases, follow-up imaging or additional diagnostic techniques may be necessary.
Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Broken Fingers
Many hand fractures can be effectively treated without surgery. The choice of treatment depends on the location and severity of the fracture, as well as the patient’s overall health and lifestyle factors.
Common Non-Surgical Treatments
- Immobilization: Using a splint or cast to keep the broken bone in proper alignment
- Buddy taping: Taping the injured finger to an adjacent healthy finger for support
- Pain management: Over-the-counter or prescription medications to alleviate discomfort
- Ice therapy: Applying cold packs to reduce swelling and pain
- Elevation: Keeping the hand raised above heart level to minimize swelling
How long does it take for a broken finger to heal without surgery?
The healing time for a broken finger treated non-surgically typically ranges from 3 to 6 weeks. However, this can vary depending on the specific fracture, the patient’s age, and overall health. Complete recovery, including regaining full strength and range of motion, may take several months.
Surgical Interventions for Hand Fractures
In some cases, surgery may be necessary to properly treat a hand fracture. This is typically recommended for severe fractures, open fractures, or when non-surgical methods have been unsuccessful.
Indications for Surgery
- Displaced fractures that cannot be realigned without surgery
- Open fractures where the bone has broken through the skin
- Fractures involving joints
- Multiple fractures in the same hand
- Fractures that have failed to heal with non-surgical treatment
Common Surgical Techniques
Several surgical approaches may be used to treat hand fractures, including:
- Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF): Realigning the bone fragments and securing them with pins, plates, or screws
- External fixation: Using an external frame to hold the bones in place
- Bone grafting: Adding bone tissue to promote healing in complex fractures
What is the recovery time after hand fracture surgery?
Recovery time following hand fracture surgery can vary widely depending on the severity of the injury and the specific procedure performed. Generally, patients can expect:
- 2-6 weeks of immobilization in a cast or splint
- 4-8 weeks before returning to light activities
- 3-6 months for full recovery and return to strenuous activities
It’s important to note that rehabilitation and physical therapy play crucial roles in the recovery process, helping to restore strength and range of motion.
Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy for Hand Fractures
Rehabilitation is a critical component of recovery from hand fractures, whether treated surgically or non-surgically. The goal of physical therapy is to restore function, strength, and range of motion to the affected hand.
Key Components of Hand Rehabilitation
- Range of motion exercises: Gentle movements to prevent stiffness and improve flexibility
- Strengthening exercises: Gradually increasing resistance to rebuild muscle strength
- Grip and pinch exercises: Improving fine motor skills and dexterity
- Desensitization techniques: Reducing hypersensitivity in the affected area
- Scar management: Minimizing scar tissue formation and improving appearance (for surgical cases)
When should physical therapy begin after a hand fracture?
The timing of physical therapy initiation depends on the type of fracture and treatment method. For non-surgical cases, gentle exercises may begin as soon as the initial pain and swelling subside, often within the first week. Following surgery, physical therapy typically starts 2-6 weeks post-operation, once the surgeon determines that the fracture has stabilized sufficiently.
Long-Term Prognosis and Potential Complications
While most hand fractures heal well with appropriate treatment, it’s important to be aware of potential long-term effects and complications that may arise.
Possible Long-Term Effects
- Reduced range of motion
- Residual stiffness or weakness
- Slight deformity (in some cases)
- Increased risk of arthritis in the affected joint
Potential Complications
Although rare, some complications can occur during the healing process or as a result of treatment:
- Malunion: Improper alignment of the healed bone
- Nonunion: Failure of the bone to heal completely
- Infection (particularly in surgical cases or open fractures)
- Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS): A chronic pain condition
- Tendon adhesions: Scar tissue formation limiting tendon movement
Can hand function be fully restored after a fracture?
In most cases, with proper treatment and rehabilitation, patients can regain full or near-full function of their hand following a fracture. However, the extent of recovery depends on various factors, including:
- The severity and location of the fracture
- The patient’s age and overall health
- Adherence to the treatment plan and rehabilitation program
- The presence of any complications during healing
It’s important for patients to maintain realistic expectations and understand that complete recovery may take several months or even up to a year in some cases.
Prevention Strategies for Hand Fractures
While not all hand fractures can be prevented, there are several strategies that can help reduce the risk of injury, particularly in sports and workplace settings.
General Prevention Tips
- Use proper protective equipment during sports and high-risk activities
- Practice proper form and technique in sports and physical activities
- Maintain good bone health through diet and exercise
- Create a safe home environment to prevent falls, especially for older adults
- Use caution when operating machinery or power tools
Workplace Safety Measures
In occupational settings where hand injuries are common, employers and employees should focus on:
- Implementing comprehensive safety protocols
- Providing and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Conducting regular safety training and awareness programs
- Ensuring proper maintenance of tools and machinery
- Encouraging reporting of potential hazards and near-miss incidents
How effective are hand guards in preventing fractures during sports?
Hand guards and other protective equipment can significantly reduce the risk of hand fractures in sports. Studies have shown that proper use of hand protection can decrease the incidence of hand injuries by up to 60% in some high-risk sports. However, it’s important to note that no protective gear can completely eliminate the risk of injury, and proper technique and adherence to safety rules remain crucial.
Understanding the complexities of hand fractures, from symptoms and diagnosis to treatment and prevention, is essential for both medical professionals and the general public. By recognizing the signs of a potential fracture early and seeking prompt medical attention, patients can improve their chances of a full recovery and minimize long-term complications. As research in orthopedics and sports medicine continues to advance, we can expect even more effective strategies for treating and preventing hand fractures in the future.
How To Tell If Your Hand Is Broken — Broken Hand, Finger, And Wrist Symptoms And Treatment: Sports Medicine Oregon: Orthopedic Surgery
How To Tell If Your Hand Is Broken — Broken Hand, Finger, And Wrist Symptoms And Treatment
According to recent estimates published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, approximately one-quarter of all sports injuries involve the hands or wrists. Hand fractures and broken fingers are currently on the rise due to increased athletic competition around the country, but these kinds of injuries are also common off the playing field, especially for older adults. As part of the natural aging process, our bones weaken over time, leaving us more vulnerable to fractures and other injuries. Regardless of the cause, there are many effective broken hand treatments and strategies to help expedite the recovery process and prevent reinjury. In this post, we will explain many common broken hand symptoms and what to do for a broken hand, including physical therapy and surgical options. Let’s take a look…
Anatomy Of The Hand: Different Types Of Hand Fractures
With 27 bones and 28 muscles, the human hand is certainly nimble, but it is also highly susceptible to injury, especially acute injuries as a result of direct trauma. Along with the ends of the forearm’s radius and ulna, the skeletal structure of the wrist is composed of eight small carpal bones. Beyond these, the palm of the hand is made up of five total metacarpal bones. Each of these is labeled numerically, one through five, with the first metacarpal controlling the thumb. The “neck” of each metacarpal bone is the thinnest part just behind the knuckle, whereas the “base” of each bone is the end situated closest to the wrist. Beyond the metacarpals, each finger has three phalanges, while the thumb has two. One of the most common types of hand fractures, commonly known as Boxer’s Fracture, is a break in the neck of the fifth metacarpal — the one controlling the pinky. As the name suggests, a Boxer’s fracture is often the result of a closed fist striking a hard object, or otherwise sustaining direct trauma during a collision. Fractures to the scaphoid bone (the carpal bone situated just below the thumb) are also common, especially during college football and other athletics.
Broken Hand Symptoms: How Do I Know If I Have A Broken Hand?
Approximately 6 million people suffer a broken bone every year in the United States, and broken fingers are very common. The location and severity of the hand fracture will determine the symptoms the patient experiences and the available treatment options. So what does a broken hand feel like? Let’s take a look at a few of the most common broken hand symptoms.
Fractured hand symptoms involving the metacarpals include pain, swelling, general tenderness along the site of the injury, and bruising. These metacarpal fractures symptoms may be more pronounced as the patient makes a fist or even loosely grips items. Metacarpal fractures may also give the involved fingers a shortened appearance. For example, Boxer’s fracture symptoms may include the knuckle appearing indented or crushed inward due to displacement along the neck of the metacarpal. Broken finger symptoms include pain, decreased range of motion, swelling, and sensitivity to even the lightest touch. Fractured finger symptoms may also include bruising, and it’s possible for the finger to appear deformed or misaligned. Broken thumb symptoms include swelling, bruising, sensitivity to the touch, and decreased range of motion. Some patients also report numbness or feelings of cold around the injury. In some cases, the hand or fingers may change colors, becoming pale or even blue, after a fracture of the hand. Patients may also notice other tactile sensations, such as tingling.
Scaphoid fractures are the most common injuries involving the eight small carpal bones along the base of the wrist. Scaphoid fracture symptoms include pain, swelling, and sensitivity to touch. Pain symptoms may increase as the individual makes a fist or closes the hand. However, just because a person is still capable of making a fist or using the digits with minimal discomfort does not mean he or she has not suffered a broken hand or finger. It’s important to remember that many broken hand symptoms are similar to those of other potential injuries, and diagnosis by a medical professional is key. Prompt medical attention is necessary to prevent further injury and help expedite the recovery process. Accurate diagnosis of the extent of the damage will require a physical examination and potentially the use of diagnostic imaging tests. After these tests, your doctor will recommend appropriate broken hand treatment options.
Hand Fracture Treatments: How To Treat A Broken Hand
There are many broken hand treatment options to address broken fingers, broken metacarpals, and other hand injuries. Fortunately, many hand fractures will not require surgical intervention, although splints, braces, straps, and the classic “buddy system” may be used to immobilize the affected bones. In some instances, patients may need to wear larger casts to immobilize the entire hand or wrist. These splints and casts hold the bones in place, allowing the area to heal, while also minimizing the risk of reinjury during the recovery process. In the event of misalignment, the overseeing medical professional may need to manually reposition the finger before utilizing a splint or cast. These noninvasive treatments are viable for most situations, but in the case of more severe injuries, your doctor may recommend surgical intervention for optimal results and recovery.
Broken Hand Treatment Options: Hand Fracture Surgery
Fractures that cannot be properly corrected with the aforementioned treatment strategies will require broken hand surgery. During hand fracture surgery, local or general anesthesia may be used depending on the specific surgery. Broken hand surgery may involve the use of small pins and wires that will hold the fractured bones in place for several weeks. In some instances, metal plates and screws may be utilized to ensure the bones of the hand are properly aligned. If a bone has been shattered, it may be necessary to use a bone graft transplanted from another part of the patient’s body. A bone graft may also be used to treat a bone that has not healed properly after a previous injury.
The Recovery Process: Broken Hand Healing Time
Most patients should expect to have a follow-up appointment with their doctor within a week or two of the procedure. During the recovery process, the overseeing medical professional may use intermittent imaging tests to make sure the bones are healing properly. Pain and swelling are to be expected after surgery, and your doctor may prescribe medication to help. Over-the-counter pain medications can also be used to treat pain, discomfort, and swelling. To further minimize swelling, it’s important to keep the injury elevated following surgery. Ideally, the hand should be kept higher than the heart, meaning the patient may need to prop it up while seated or lying down. Ice packs may also be used to help with pain and swelling. When using this method, a towel should be kept between the ice packs and the skin, to prevent direct contact and reduce the risk of frostbite. Additional procedures may be required to remove hardware used to hold the bones in place during the healing process.
Broken hand recovery time will be different for every injury and every patient. With proper treatment, broken fingers will typically heal within a few weeks and broken hands within one to two months, although it may take several months to make a complete recovery from a severely broken hand.
Broken Hand Rehab — Broken Hand Physical Therapy Exercises
Physical therapy may be recommended for some hand injuries to help with the recovery process. Finger and hand physical therapy exercises are used to alleviate pain and discomfort related to stiffness and inflammation, and they can also help patients restore strength lost as a result of extended immobilization. The overseeing physical therapist will first gauge a patient’s range of motion and overall functionality before establishing a comprehensive regimen of hand physical therapy exercises. Once the patient has demonstrated proficiency, these broken hand physical therapy exercises should be performed at home daily for optimal results. Hand therapy putty and common everyday household items such as towels and cups may be used to help with strength training exercises. Stretching exercises will also be incorporated to increase the range of motion.
Many hand and finger injuries in the workplace and on the playing field are preventable, and hand and finger injury prevention should be practiced as part of daily operations. Preventing hand injuries in the workplace and on the playing field is often as easy as wearing appropriate gear for the job or sport at hand. For athletes, this means ensuring protective gloves and wrist guards are in good condition and fit appropriately. On the job site, it’s imperative to incorporate the best ergonomic practices and also wear appropriate safety gear, such as approved hand and wrist protection. Stretching before and after activity may also keep muscles, tendons, and ligaments primed for use and minimize other hand and wrist injuries.

49ers’ Elijah Mitchell to undergo procedure on broken finger; status in doubt for Week 11 vs. Jaguars
Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images
Elijah Mitchell will undergo a procedure on a broken finger sustained during the 49ers’ 31-10 win over the Rams on Monday night, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced Tuesday. Mitchell will have a pin put in the finger he injured Monday night. The 49ers hope Mitchell will be able to practice Wednesday, while team doctors expressed optimism that Mitchell might be able to play Sunday against the Jaguars.
A 2021 sixth-round pick, Mitchell has played well after injuries thrust him into the starting lineup. He rushed for 104 yards on 19 carries in the 49ers’ season-opening win over the Lions. He had two other 100-yard games before rushing for 91 yards on 27 carries in Monday night’s win over the Rams. For the season, Mitchell has run for 560 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 4.8 yards per carry.
Mitchell was part of a 49ers rushing attack that churned out 156 yards and a touchdown on 44 carries against the Rams stout defense. With the onus on the running game, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo more than did his part by going 15 of 19 for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
“Honestly, it felt pretty similar to the Super Bowl year,” Garoppolo said of the 49ers offense Monday night, via Matt Barrows of The Athletic. “I felt like we ran the ball 30 times every time that year. When we can do that and be successful on third down, it’s a good recipe for us.”
If Mitchell has to miss Sunday’s game, the 49ers will rely more on Jeff Wilson, who had 28 yards on 10 carries against the Rams. Monday night was Wilson’s regular season debut after coming off of the team’s physically unable to perform list in Week 9.
On Sunday, the 49ers will face a Jaguars defense that is 11th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed. Led by running back James Robinson, Jacksonville is also 11th in the league in rushing yards gained through 10 weeks.

Finger Anatomy Picture Image on RxList.com
Finger Anatomy: Fingers are easily injured, and broken fingers are some of the most common
traumatic injuries seen in an emergency room. Finger fractures may account for
up to 10% of all bone fractures. Because fingers are used for
many everyday
activities, they are at higher risk than other parts of the body for traumatic injury, including sports injuries, workplace injuries, and other accidents.
Understanding the basic anatomy of the hand and fingers is useful in
understanding different types of finger injuries, broken fingers, and how some
treatments differ from others. Fingers are constructed of ligaments (strong supportive tissue connecting
bone to bone), tendons (attachment tissue from muscle to bone), and three
phalanges (bones). There are no muscles in the fingers;
and fingers move by the pull of
forearm muscles on the tendons. The three bones in each finger are named according to their relationship to the palm of the hand. The
first bone, closest to the palm, is the proximal phalange; the second
bone is the middle phalange; and the smallest and farthest from the hand is the
distal phalange.
The thumb does not have a middle phalange.
The knuckles are joints formed by the bones of the fingers and are commonly
injured or dislocated with trauma to the hand.
- The first and largest knuckle is the junction
between the hand and the fingers – the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP). This
joint commonly is injured in closed-fist activities and is commonly known as a
boxer’s fracture. - The next knuckle out toward the
fingernail is the proximal inter-phalangeal
joint (PIP). This joint may be dislocated in sporting events when a ball or
object directly strikes the finger. - The farthest joint of the finger is the distal inter-phalangeal joint (DIP).
Injuries to this joint usually involve a fracture or torn tendon
(avulsion) injury.
X-Ray Exam: Finger (for Parents)
What It Is
A finger X-ray is a safe and painless test that uses a small amount of radiation to take a picture of one or more fingers. During the examination, an X-ray machine sends a beam of radiation through the finger or fingers, and an image is recorded on a computer or special X-ray film. This image shows the soft tissues and bones.
The X-ray image is black and white. Dense structures that block the passage of the X-ray beam through the body, such as the bones, appear white. Softer body tissues, such as the skin and muscles, allow the X-ray beams to pass through them and appear darker.
An X-ray technician in the radiology department of a hospital or a health care provider’s office takes the X-rays. Three different pictures are usually taken of the fingers: one from the back of the hand, with the palm facing down (posteroanterior view, or PA), one from the side (lateral view) and one at an angle (oblique view).
Why It’s Done
A finger X-ray can help find the cause of common signs and symptoms such as pain, tenderness, or swelling, or a deformity. It can detect broken bones or dislocated joints. After a broken bone has been set, an X-ray can help determine whether the bones are in proper alignment and whether they have healed properly.
If surgery on a finger is required, an X-ray may be taken to plan for the procedure and to assess the results of the operation. Also, an X-ray can help to detect cysts, tumors, or other diseases in the bones, such as late stages of infections.
Preparation
A finger X-ray doesn’t require any special preparation. Your child may be asked to remove clothing, jewelry, or any metal objects that might interfere with the image.
Developing babies are more sensitive to radiation and are at more risk for harm, so if your daughter is pregnant, be sure to tell her doctor and the X-ray technician.
Procedure
This is a quick test. Although it may take 10 minutes or longer, actual exposure to radiation is usually less than a second.
Your child will be asked to enter a special room where X-rays are done, which will most likely contain a table and a large X-ray machine hanging from the ceiling. Parents are usually able to come into the room with their child to provide reassurance. If you stay in the room while the X-ray is being done, you’ll be asked to wear a lead apron to protect certain parts of your body. Your child’s reproductive organs will also be protected with a lead shield.
The technician will seat your child and position your child’s hand on the table, and then step behind a wall or into an adjoining room to operate the machine. The technician will return to reposition the hand for each of the different X-ray views. Occasionally doctors request an X-ray of the opposite hand for comparison.
Older kids will be asked to stay still for a couple of seconds while the X-ray is taken; infants may require gentle restraint. Keeping their hands still is important to prevent blurring of the X-ray image.
What to Expect
Your child won’t feel anything as the X-ray is taken. The X-ray room may feel cool, due to the air conditioning used to maintain the equipment.
The positions required for the X-rays may feel uncomfortable, but they only need to be held for a few seconds. If your child has an injury and can’t stay in the required position, the technician might be able to find another position that’s easier on your child. Babies often cry in the X-ray room, especially if they’re restrained, but this won’t interfere with the procedure.
After the X-rays are taken, you and your child will be asked to wait a few minutes while the images are processed. If they’re blurred or unclear, the X-ray may need to be redone.
Getting the Results
A radiologist, a doctor specially trained in reading and interpreting X-ray images, will look at your child’s X-rays and send a report to your doctor, who will discuss the results with you.
In an emergency, the results of an X-ray can be available quickly. Otherwise, results are usually ready in 1-2 days. In most cases, results can’t be given directly to the patient or family at the time of the test.
Risks
In general, X-rays are safe. Although there’s some risk to the body with any exposure to radiation, the amount of radiation used in a finger X-ray isn’t considered dangerous. It’s important to know that radiologists use the minimum amount of radiation required to get the best results.
Developing babies are more sensitive to radiation and are at more risk for harm, so if your daughter is pregnant, be sure to tell her doctor and the X-ray technician.
Helping Your Child
You can help your young child prepare for a finger X-ray by explaining the test in simple terms before the procedure. It may help to explain that getting an X-ray is like posing for a picture. You can describe the room and the equipment that will be used, and reassure your child that you’ll be right there for support.
For older kids, be sure to explain the importance of keeping still while the X-ray is taken so it won’t have to be repeated.
If You Have Questions
If you have questions about the X-ray, speak with your doctor. You can also talk to the technician before the procedure.
Finger Fracture Treatment Dallas, TX | Finger Injury Treatment Dallas
Fingers are fine structures of the human body which assist in daily routine activities through coordinated movements. Any abnormality affecting the fingers can have a huge impact on quality of life of the patient. A finger fracture is usually a minor injury but if left untreated it may lead to major consequences due to interference with the specialized functions such as grasping or manipulating objects in the palm. A fracture of the finger may disrupt the alignment of whole hand and cause pain and stiffness.
The hand contains approximately 27 small bones. The 8 carpal bones together form the wrist and the 5 metacarpal bones spread out across the palm and join the phalanges of the fingers; the five fingers of each hand comprise of approximately 14 phalanges.
Causes
Fracture of the finger may be secondary to a trauma, direct stress to the finger or any injury to the hand such as a fall or motor vehicle accident. Some other common causes of finger fracture include carelessness while using power tools such as a saw or drill and other physical activities such as sports. Patients with a history of osteoporosis are at an increased risk of finger fracture.
Symptoms
The common symptoms of a finger fracture include swelling, tenderness and bruising at the fracture site. The fractured site is tender to touch and any movement of the finger may be difficult along with a physical deformity of the fractured finger.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of finger fracture is based on history, physical examinations and X-ray imaging to determine the type and severity of the fracture. X-rays are the most widely used diagnostic tools for the evaluation of fractures.
Treatment
The treatment of the fracture is based on the severity and type of fracture as well as the medical condition of the patient.
Non-surgical treatment
Non-surgical treatment comprises of immobilizing the fractured finger with the help of casts or braces to prevent weight bearing and to help the healing process. Buddy taping can also be used to support the fractured finger. X-rays are taken at regular intervals to assess the healing process.
Surgical treatment
Surgical treatment may be required for severe fractures such as open fractures or crush injuries. Pins, screws or wires may be used for repair of the fracture and to realign the bones.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is essential to avoid complications such as late arthritis. Physical therapy and other exercise regimens are recommended to prevent finger stiffness and swelling and to improve muscle strength and range of motion.

How can I tell if my finger is broken or just jarred?
If you play sports, particularly netball, basketball, football or another ball sport chances are you’ve asked this question.
Jarred fingers are one of the most common sporting injuries we see and they can be super painful, swollen and make school, work and life in general quite difficult. Because of our high reliance on our hands and the large amount of nerve endings in our fingers our brain regards any injury to the finger as serious, but how do you know if you should just push through the pain or get help?
Let’s start with getting a handle of the anatomy of the finger and the structures that might be injured
Anatomy
Your fingers are made up of 3 bones or phalanges. Between each of these bones are the joints known as interphalangeal joints (IP Joints for short) as well as the knuckle joint where each joins to your hand (the metacarpal-phalangeal joint or MCP).
FUN FACT: Your thumb is a little different and only has two phalanges and one interphalangeal joint.
FUN FACT #2: There are no muscles in your fingers. Your finger movement is caused by the muscles of your forearm and hand pulling on long tendons that attach along the fingers.
The joints of your fingers are held together by a series of ligaments called the collateral ligaments. A jarred finger is usually a sprain or injury to the collateral ligaments.
So how do we know if it’s broken?
Many of the symptoms of jarred or sprained finger overlap with those of a broken finger. These might include:
- Pain on movement
- Pain when the finger is pressed or bumped
- Swelling which can be localised or spread further up or down the finger into your hand
- Bruising – your finger may look red, blue, purple even green or yellow which can also be local or spread
- Stiffness
While health professionals usually agree pain can be a way of determining whether something is broken or sprained, unfortunately in practice we don’t tend to rely on pain alone. Pain is quite a subjective measure and as mentioned your brain takes pain from your hands and fingers more seriously due to the important role they play in every day life.
If you’ve suffered this type of injury you should see a physio or a doctor as soon as possible.
It’s not life threatening so a trip to hospital emergency isn’t required in most cases. Your Physio will order an Xray to check whether there is a break. If there is no break but all the other symptoms are there it’s likely you have sprained one of the ligaments and your finger is just jarred.
What’s the Treatment?
Treatment may be as easy as continuing RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) for a mild sprain or jarred finger.
For more significant sprains or breaks to the phalanges you will be placed in a splint. Depending on where the injury is will determine whether your hand needs to be immobilised along with your finger. We do our best to have as little impact on your usual daily life as possible but sometimes this can’t be avoided – after all your hands and fingers are pretty important so we want to heal them the best way possible.
At Activate Physio we can make thermoplastic splints to easily manage jarred and broken fingers. Check out our video showing what goes on at a fracture clinic appointment and how we make our finger splints.

How to use a broken laptop or smartphone
If your mouse or touchpad is broken
You can operate your computer even without a mouse or touchpad. You just need to know which keys to press. Check out the list of keyboard shortcuts for Windows and macOS. Of course, the matter is not limited to them, but for a start this will be enough. More keyboard shortcuts can be found on the pages of Microsoft and Apple.
Hotkeys are good, but it is still difficult to work with the system without a cursor.Enable arrow control from the keyboard – preferably before you have any problems with the mouse. To do this:
- In Windows, click “Start” → “Settings” → “Accessibility” → “Mouse” and enable the option “Control the mouse using the keyboard”.
- On macOS, click System Preferences → Accessibility → Mouse & Trackpad. Activate the option “Enable control keys”. Or, if the mouse is already broken, press Option + Command + F5. The Accessibility window opens.Select Enable Control Keys with the arrows and press Enter.
You can now move the cursor using the NumPad buttons or the keys on the right side of the laptop keyboard (pictured above).
Mac also includes Switch Control, which lets you control your computer from your iOS device. Apple explains how to turn it on.

If the keyboard is broken
The easiest way to cope with the problem when the keyboard does not work as a whole or individual elements on it, is to use the virtual option.
- In Windows, click Start → Accessibility → On-Screen Keyboard.
- On macOS, click Apple Menu (apple logo on the menu bar) → System Preferences → Accessibility → Keyboard → Accessibility Keyboard. Activate the Enable Assistive Keyboard option.
Now you can click on the keys on the screen and type text.
Mac computers can also be controlled using voice commands. To do this, click Apple Menu → System Preferences → Accessibility → Voice Control → Turn On Voice Control. For a list of supported commands, visit the Apple website. Windows 10 also has voice control, but it is not yet available in Russian.

If your laptop screen breaks
Most laptops have video output ports that you can use to connect external monitors to them. So, if your gadget’s screen is broken, connect it to an external display or even a TV. Then press the following keys:
- in Windows – Win + P;
- on macOS – Command + F1.
This will switch your laptop or all-in-one to an external display. You will be able to work or at least extract data before repairing in the service.
Another option for Mac owners with a damaged monitor is to use the iPad as a display. To do this, you need to turn on the Sidecar function. But since it is problematic to do this using only the keyboard, it is better to connect iPad to Mac before the display problems arise.
If the smartphone screen is broken
We strongly do not recommend using a smartphone with a broken screen, as this can damage it even more. However, if you just need access to a gadget, and the screen does not work, you can resort to the voice assistant. Use Google Assistant or Siri commands to send someone a text message or email, turn music on or off, or take a call.
You can also control a smartphone with a broken screen from a computer if you have installed special applications on it in advance.

If the smartphone buttons do not work
Physical keys on smartphones, such as the volume rocker and power button, fail faster than the touchscreen. But you can use the gadget without them.
For example, you can wake up the device from sleep mode not with the power button, but by touching the fingerprint scanner.
On iPhone, enable AssistiveTouch by tapping Settings → Accessibility → Touch → AssistiveTouch. It will allow you to replace actions from non-working buttons with gestures.
On Android, you can find the Accessibility feature in the settings menu to control your smartphone with gestures. Or install the Gravity Screen and Assistive Volume Button apps. The first allows you to turn on the gadget simply by picking it up, the second adjusts the volume from the screen, without the need to use physical buttons.
appbox fallback https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nitin.volumnbutton&hl=ru&gl=ru
If the speaker or microphone of the smartphone does not work
Everything is quite simple and trite here. Connect wired headphones with a microphone to the device, or connect a Bluetooth headset. So you can listen to music and chat, even if the built-in microphones and speakers in your smartphone have failed.
Remember that all of the above are trade-offs and workarounds. If your laptop or smartphone does not work as expected, do not delay the repair and take the device to a service center.

Cryo-transfer was in the natural cycle, TSH per eutherox 50 was 2.1500. Prolactin 138 on cabergaline 1/4 tablet once a week. Ab-TPO 8.6.
When confirming pregnancy, it was recommended that cabergaline be noted, and eutherox should be increased to 75.
At week 9 TSH 0.0450
The endocrinologist recommended abolishing eutherox and iodine for up to 4 weeks and increasing Vit D to 5000. Control of TSH after 4 weeks and there adjust the dosage of euterox
It is scary to cancel eutherox altogether, but will it provoke a miscarriage and the fetus needs iodine?

Anxiety, fear, hypertension, pain in the left side of the chest
I am receiving treatment for hypertension. Mikardis 80 mg and carvedilol 6.5 mg per day (1 tablet for 2 doses per day). There were chest pains, arrhythmias, a constant feeling of anxiety and fear. The cardiologist believes that there is no serious damage to the heart. I assumed it was from the back and advised me to see a neurologist. The neurologist found cervical osteochondrosis and advised to be treated by a cardiologist. It turns out that neither the cardiologist nor the neurologist found anything critical. So I was left alone with illness and fears. Could this be related to the psyche? Could this be related to the medications you are taking? Before that, I took Renitek for pressure, there was no pain in my heart. Very high meteorological dependence. Fear attacks, constant anxiety. I don’t know how to get out of the crisis.

Ring, ring, step out on the porch: which finger to wear rings on
A ring is not just a beautiful piece of jewelry or a fashion accessory.Since ancient times, it was considered a symbol of love and devotion, and in the Chinese tradition it signified power and authority. Various magical properties are associated with this decoration: it is worn as talismans and amulets. It is believed that the ring can bring the wearer good luck in a variety of areas of life, if worn on a specific finger.
Pinky ring
In the esoteric reading, the planet Mercury is considered the patron saint of the little finger. On this finger, jewelry is worn by sociable, romantic and creative natures.Palmists advise to try on a ring on the little finger for those who want to achieve harmony and tranquility, to improve their emotional state.
It is also believed that if you wear jewelry on your left hand, you can attract love into life or improve mutual understanding with loved ones. The pinkie ring is also worth wearing for those who want to develop their creativity. The ring on the right hand will bring good luck in negotiations.
Laconic rings look good on a miniature finger, and from an esoteric point of view, jewelry made of any metal is suitable for wearing on this finger.Jewelry with delicate ornate patterns and small precious stones will emphasize the sophistication of the wearer. And a few years ago, the Dior fashion house set the trend for wearing signet rings on the little finger by releasing the Lucky jewelry collection.
Among celebrities, pinky rings are often worn by Katy Perry and Cara Delevingne.
Ring on the ring finger
Palmists believe that Venus, the goddess of love, patronizes this finger. Therefore, it is not surprising that wedding and engagement rings are worn on the ring finger, which symbolize a strong union and eternal love.
Interestingly, in the Orthodox tradition, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand. In countries such as Canada, USA, Turkey, France, and a number of other countries, jewelry is worn on the left hand, since it is believed that it is closer to the heart. There is also a sadder belief: after the death of a beloved, the widowed spouse moves the ring to the index finger of the opposite hand.
A gold ring is best suited for the ring finger, and we are talking not only about laconic smooth models, but also about rings, generously decorated with loose diamonds.
Wedding rings can be replaced with Meghan Markle and Emily Ratajkowski, and recently the model Natalia Vodianova shared the news of her engagement, posting a photo of the magnificent jewelry to the network.
Ring on the middle finger
The middle finger is patronized by Saturn, and its symbolism can be guessed intuitively. It is located in the middle of the hand and is associated with balance and balance.
Experts assure that the ring on the middle finger helps to make life more harmonious, to find peace of mind and peace.
From the point of view of palmists, rings made of white metals: silver, platinum, white gold look good on this finger. But since the middle finger also symbolizes the expression of individuality, you can choose unusual graphic jewelry made from different metals or using two or even three types of precious and semi-precious stones.
If you inherited a family ring, then it should also be worn on this finger, since it strengthens the person’s connection with his roots. One of the most interesting jewelry for the middle finger is the so-called slave bracelet or jadi bracelet.
Singers Beyoncé and Rihanna demonstrated how to wear rings on the middle finger.
Index finger ring
This is the finger of the planet Jupiter. In mythology, Jupiter is the supreme god, so it is not surprising that the index finger is also called the “finger of power.” Political leaders knew about this interpretation, and famous artists often depicted rulers with a ring on their index fingers to emphasize their special status. An example is the painting by the painter Andrei Shishkin “Ivan the Terrible” or the work of the artist George Gower, dedicated to Elizabeth I.
It is believed that the ring on this finger endows the wearer with determination and authority. Those who are versed in palmistry know that indecisive and shy people should wear a ring on the index finger of their right hand to gain confidence and even develop leadership skills. Also, this way of wearing jewelry will attract career and financial success into your life.
The ring on the index finger of the left hand can have several interpretations: some experts believe that it helps in career advancement, others that it enhances the negative qualities of the wearer, such as pride, selfishness and ambition.
For the index finger, it is better to choose jewelry made of tin. As for the stones, the choice should be made based on the recommendations of astrologers. A charm stone chosen in accordance with your zodiac sign will enhance the magical properties of the ring on the index finger.
Models Bella Hadid and Kaia Gerber and actress Margot Robbie wear rings on the middle finger.
Thumb ring
In palmistry, the thumb is called the finger of the planet Mars, which is associated with willpower, masculinity and belligerence. Historically, large gold thumb rings have been associated with wealth and status. In some traditions, they also denoted a person’s belonging to secret societies.
Over time, the ring on the thumb has a different interpretation: it was believed that in women it indicates that the owner belongs to sexual minorities. Moreover, the ring on the right finger allegedly indicated that the girl had a constant companion in life, and on the left, on the contrary, indicated that she was in an active search. However, in practice, this interpretation has not been widely adopted.
The thumb ring demonstrates the iron character of the wearer. It is assumed that it is worn by strong-willed and ambitious people. Palmistry experts advise those who want to develop such qualities as prudence, resilience and confidence to wear jewelry on this finger. However, experts warn: putting a ring on your thumb, you need to be prepared for the fact that changes will come to life.
As for the jewelry itself, it is most often advised to choose wide, but at the same time minimalistic rings, not decorated with precious stones. However, if you still want to choose a ring with a stone, then take a closer look at models with rubies and garnets, since the planet Mars is associated with red.
Big toe rings are worn by the main Hollywood rebel singers Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish.
